Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (February 19, 1627 – April 3, 1680) is a principle of effulgence, rather a divine inspiration. He is certainly not human, he is God. Shivaji Maharaj is a Primal God who took birth in a divine and pure culture. In history, no other religion has produced such an immaculate personality. One has yet to see a monarch who despite being powerful did not use his powers to torment, who despite being glorified was not arrogant, who conquered valorous enemies and who despite being a human functioned as a God !

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Birth, Family, and Early Life
1. Chhatrapati Shivaji's Life at a Glance A thread on main events in the life of Shivaji Maharaj. #ShivJayanti #ShivajiMaharajJayanti pic.twitter.com/rEhG5rInya — Hindu History (@HindutvaItihas) February 19, 2021
The beginning of the 17 th century witnessed the rise of new Warrior class Marathas when the Bhonsle family of the Poona district got military as well as a political advantage by the Ahmadnagar kingdom that gets the advantage of being local. Therefore, they took privileges and recruited a large number of Maratha sardars and soldiers in their armies. Shivaji was the son of Shahji Bhosle and Jija Bai. Shivaji was brought up at Poona under the supervision of his mother and an able Brahmin Dadaji Konda-dev. Dadaji Konda-dev made Shivaji an expert soldier and an efficient administrator. He also came under the religious influence of Guru Ramdas, which made him proud of his motherland.
Important events in Shivaji’s Life
1. Conquest of Torana: It was the first fort captured by Shivaji as Chieftain of Marathas which led to the foundation of his ruling attributes of valour and determination at the age of 16. This conquest drives him to capture another like Raigarh and Pratapgarh. Due to these conquests, the Sultan of Bijapur was getting panic and he put Shahji, Shivaji's father in prison. In AD 1659, Shivaji again tried to attack Bijapur then the Sultan of Bijapur sent his general, Afzal Khan, to capture Shivaji. But Shivaji managed to escape and killed him with a deadly weapon called Baghnakh or the tiger's claw. Finally, in 1662, the Sultan of Bijapur made a peace treaty with Shivaji and made him an independent ruler of his conquered territories.
2. Conquest of Kondana fort: It was under the control of Nilkanth Rao. It was fought between Tanaji Malusare, a commander of Maratha ruler Shivaji and Udaybhan Rathod, fort keeper under Jai Singh I.
3. Coronation of Shivaji: In AD 1674, Shivaji declared himself as an independent ruler of the Maratha Kingdom and was crowned as Chhatrapati at Raigarh. His coronation symbolises the rise of people who challenges the legacy of the Mughal’s. After the coronation, he gets the title of ‘Haidava Dharmodharka’ (Protector of Hindu faith) of the newly formed state of Hindavi Swarajya. This coronation gives a legitimate right to collect land revenue and levy tax on the people.
Shivaji’s administration
Shivaji’s administration was largely influenced by Deccan administrative practices. He appointed eight ministers who were called ‘Astapradhan’ who assists him in the administrative helm of affairs.
1. Peshwa was the most important minister who looked after the finance and general administration. 2. Senapati (sari-i-naubat) was one of the leading Marathas chiefs who were basically posted of honour. 3. The Majumdar was an accountant. 4. The Wakenavis is one who looks after the intelligence, post and household affairs. 5. The Surnavis or chitnis assist the king with his correspondence. 6. The Dabir was the master of ceremonies and helps the king in his dealing with foreign affairs. 7. The Nayayadish and Punditrao were in charge of justice and charitable grants. 8. He levies the tax on the land which was one-fourth of the land revenue i.e. Chauth or Chauthai. 9. He was not only proved to be an able general, a skilful tactician, and a shrewd diplomat, he also laid the foundation of a strong state by curbing the power of the Deshmukh.
Hence, the rise of Marathas was due to economic, social, political and institutional factors. To that extent, Shivaji was a popular king who represented the assertion of popular will in the area against Mughal encroachment. Although, Marathas were ancient tribes but17 th century gave them space to declare themselves as ruler.

Shivaji Maharaj
Story of shivaji bhosle.
Shivaji Raje Bhosle was born on 19 February 1630, at the hill fort of Shivneri, near Junnar in the Pune district. He belonged to the Bhosle clan who founded the Maratha empire.
Swaraj Empire
Shivaji’s father Shahaji served alongside Malik Ambar, who defended the Deccan region, the first to be done by any Maratha against the Mughals. He always tried to free their kingdom from The Sultanate Of Bijapur as well as wanted to throw out the Mughal rule in India and establish a Swaraj Empire.
Rajmata Jijabai
His mother Jijabai was a pious and far sighted lady. She is regarded to be the master of Shivaji’s bravery. Shivaji was extremely devoted to his mother who was also very deeply religious. This religious environment had a great influence on Shivaji, and he carefully studied the two great Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. The morality and spiritual messages of these epics left a great impression on him.
By the age of 16, Shivaji managed to gather a band of fiercely loyal Maratha men and set about conquering nearby lands. Their first triumph was the capture of Torna Fort of the Bijapur Kingdom. By 1647 he had captured Kondana and Rajgad forts and had control of much of the southern Pune region.
Battle of Pratapgarh
In a bid to contain Shivaji, Adil Shah sent Afzal Khan, an experienced veteran general along with an army of 40,000 men to destroy Shivaji. Upon weighing his options carefully as to what action must be taken, Shivaji decided to meet Afzal Khan on his home turf at the base of the Pratapgarh fort insisting that the meeting be an informal one. He sent a letter to Afzal Khan stating that he was eager for it. Afzal agreed.
At the meeting, Afzal Khan stabbed Shivaji in the back when the two embraced each other. Shivaji was well prepared for this and survived the attack, protected by a chain mail armour he was wearing and counter-attacked by slaying Afzal Khan with the wagh nakh (tiger-claws glove). Afzal’s army who were prepared to attack had no idea that their leader had been slain when Shivaji walked out with the decapacitated head of Afzal Khan on his sword. On seeing this the the army surrendered.
Shivaji and Aurangzeb
The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb now identified Shivaji as a major threat to his mighty Mughal Empire. He sent his uncle Shaista Khan with a large army to defeat Shivaji. Shivaji lost a large number of forts and areas to Aurangazeb and was driven out of Pune. But he did not stay defeated for long and soon overthrew Khan and re-established his rule. In a few years he recovered most of his forts.
Shivaji fought a number of battles thereafter, a vast number of them against Aurangazeb. He was even captured on one occasion but managed to plot an ingenious escape plan a few day prior to his execution. He fought a life long battle against foreigners on Indian land and never bowed down to any of them. He built a number of forts in his time and even acquired a large number along the way.
Raigad Fort
Shivaji’s center of power and growth became the fort of Raigad in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. This place became Shivaji’s capital city. Perched on top of a hill that was split off from the Western Ghats, the fort was virtually inaccessible from three sides. It is said that prizes were given to those who tried innovative methods to reach the top.
Under his rule ‘untouchables’ were given true justice. They were also recruited in the army as well as promoted. Shivaji also laid great importance on Sanskrit. He ensured that Sanskrit was never lost. He replaced Persian words with Sanskrit ones where possible. He brought true justice to those who were wronged. The people of his land loved him and truly worshipped him.
Religion too was given importance. He allowed his people to follow their religion of choice. He also allowed people to convert back to being a Hindu after having converted to Islam under Aurangazeb. He ensured that respect was given to mosques- Muslim places of worship and also to Muslim women. As a result, a large number of Muslims served in his army.
Because of these qualities, Shivaji was able to instill the same passion for revolution against the Mughals in the minds of his people. He inspired his people so much that the Maratha Empire continued to fight the Mughal rule for 27 years after his death. Shivaji breathed his last in 1680, but is fondly remembered for his acts of bravery and kindness towards his people even today. His birthday is celebrated with grand fervour in Maharashtra, amongst Maharashtrians even today.

Shivaji Maharaj’s ancestral lands were in the Deccan area, under the Bijapur sultans. Disturbed by the oppression from Muslim rulers and the hardship faced by Hindus, by age 16, Shivaji was determined to liberate the Hindu community. This commitment drove him throughout his life.

In the 1500s, the Mughal Empire in Delhi began governing the Deccan area of India. The neighboring uplands of Maratha came under the control of the Adilshahi Sultanate , an ally of the Mughals. Shahaji Bhonsle, from the Bhonsle clan, was the leader here. Eventually, he resisted the Mughals, setting up forts and launching attacks against them. Although supported by the Bijapur rulers, he didn’t have much success. Consequently, he moved frequently, accompanied by his wife Jijabai and son Shivaji. Shivaji’s challenging upbringing shaped his future leadership abilities.
By the age of 16, Shivaji led a group of warriors, upholding his father’s mission. In 1647, he assumed control over Poona, leading to clashes with Bijapur. In quick succession, he seized Purandhara, Kondhana, Chakan, Supa, Baramati, and Inderpuri forts.
The resources acquired assisted him in establishing a central fort at Raigad. Shivaji is best known for innovating military strategies tailored to the local landscape. His guerrilla warfare approach enabled rapid fort conquests, expanding his territory.
However, the Bijapur rulers noticed Shivaji’s advancements and detained Shahaji in 1648. After gaining freedom a year later, Shivaji momentarily reduced his military activities, focusing on strengthening his hold on the region. By 1656, he resumed his expeditions, taking over the Javali valley near Mahabaleshwar. He also subdued several influential families linked to the Bijapur Sultanate.
To sum up, Shivaji faced continuous challenges from neighboring territories but managed to build the Maratha Kingdom. His legacy as one of India’s greatest kings remains undimmed.

For the people whose lives were ruined by the Mughal Empire, the birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a good omen. During the hardships of the Mughal rule, he came as a ray of hope for the people. Maharaj was born on 18th February 1630 according to the Julian calendar and on Falgun Krishna Tritiya (Falgun Krishna Tritiya) according to the Hindu calendar at Shivneri Fort, in Junnar city, near Pune district, to Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai Bhosale. We have provided some information about Shivaji Maharaj's birthdate at the end of this article. (There are some controversies about Shivaji Maharaj's birthdate.)
During his childhood, his mother Jijamata called him "Shivba". He served the King of Bijapur during his young life. As well as being a "Jahagirdar," he lived in a certain area in Pune. Jijabai, Shivaji's mother, was a deeply religious and ambitious woman whose father was Sindkhed leader Lakhujirao Jadhav. The truth will triumph in the end, according to Shivaji, who has been taught that fighting for what is right no matter what challenges you face is the most important lesson she taught him as a child. As Shivaji was growing up, Jijamata's teachings had a profound effect on his mind.
He was encouraged by Dada Konadev to learn different warfare skills relevant to the contemporary era. His guru wanted him to survive any diverse condition by using such skills. Apart from his survival and warfare skills, he became a nationalist and the man of his words. Being a full-fledged warrior, he followed the teachings of Saint Ramdev and understood the importance of religion. This education included the importance of all religions, politics, and cultures. From the evidence of Shivaji Maharaj's essay in English of historians, you will observe that his skills and life lessons helped him to become one of the greatest leaders of India.
He quickly became adept at different life and warfare skills and entered into the reality of the world. He started to attack the enemies surrounding his kingdom and capture them one after the other to make a bigger and stronger empire. The moment his flag was hoisted in the forts of Toran and Purandar, the stories of his valour and strength reached Delhi and Agra. The rulers, whether they are tyrants or subject-loving, started to fear his name.
Adil Shah, the king of Bijapur, was afraid of his growing power. He then captured his father Shahji and imprisoned him. Learning about his father’s imprisonment, he was furious but did not lose his mind. He planned well and freed his father. This made Adil Shah even more furious. He ordered his commander Afzal Khan to plan a murder and eradicate Shivaji. Afzal acted as a friend to gain his confidence and kill him. Shivaji was one step ahead. He killed Afzal Khan by hiding a deadly dagger inside his cloak and fled.
Under his dominance and valour, the Maratha Empire grew stronger every day. He was known as a freedom fighter as he relieved commoners from the tyrants. He was considered to be anti-Muslim by many but it is not true. His two generals were Siddi and Daulat Khan. Historians suggest that his army consisted of soldiers from different races and religions. He never learned to differentiate between people in terms of caste, religion, or colour.
He focused his energy on eradicating the tyrants of the contemporary era. Most of them were Muslim rulers. He never instigated any religious war or motive to uproot a kingdom. All he did was to understand common people’s pain under the sabbatical Aurangzeb and other rulers. He freed many people and thus was given the name Chhatrapati Shivaji by his admirers.
He ruled the Maratha Empire for 27 years and created an example to follow. He then fell sick and suffered from an unknown fever for three weeks. He then succumbed to his illness and died on 3 rd April 1680 in Raigad Fort.

Shivaji Maharaj Biography in English:
1551 Falgun Vadya Tritiya i.e. 19 February 1630, Shivaji Maharaj was born from the womb of mother Jijabai in this fort “Shivneri” near Junnar. He had taken a vow to Goddess Shivai. They wanted a strong son, hence this son was named ‘Shivaji’. Shivaji Maharaj’s father Shahjiraje Bhosale was a prominent leader of the South.
Ahmednagar was the central point of Nizamshahi. In the year 1632, the Mughals started preparations to conquer Nizamshahi. In 1636, the Nizamshahi was defeated and the Nizamshahi came to an end.
After that Shahjiraje became the Adilshahi chief. Responsibility of divisions like Adil Shahane, Pune, Supe, Chakan, Indapur etc. Shahaji was given to the king. Shahjiraje was sent to Karnataka by Adilshah to play the role.
In 1641, Shahjiraja gave the charge of Jahangir of Pune to Shivajiraje and mother Jijabai. He was accompanied by Dada Kondadev, an experienced and dedicated caregiver. Dadaji Kondev established peace and order in Jahangir, Pune.
Mother Jijabai imparted values of independence and morality to Shivajiraje since childhood. Continuous efforts were made to establish Swarajya. Shivajiraje received legal education and primary education from Dadaji Kondev.
Shivaji’s childhood:
Shahjiraje and mother Jijabai were engrossed in worship. Shivaji was a member of this religious family. This religious environment had a deep impact on Shivaji.
Veer Shivaji was given education in front of his mother Jijabai. Shivaji Maharaj’s father Shahjiraje Bhosale was the commander of the Maratha army of Raja Sultan of Vijapur.
When Shivajiraje was young, he got the opportunity to live in Pune. Shahjiraje handed over the responsibility of looking after Shivajiraje in Pune to Dadoji Kondev. Shivaji was taught horse riding, archery and shooting at an early age.
Shivajiraje Responsibility :
While taking over the rule of Jahangir, there should be no injustice to his subjects, Jahangir’s subjects were farmers. That is why the Maharaja gave top priority to agriculture.
People who forced themselves on farmers were punished. The world was suffering from the irresponsible and arbitrary administration of the Vatandar. Shivajiraje’s business was people-oriented. This created a feeling of trust and belongingness towards Shivaji Maharaj in the minds of people.
Dadaji Narasprabhu, Yesaji Kank, Tanaji Malusare, Suryaji Malusare, Jeeva Mahala, Baji Pasalkar etc. were associates with Shivaji Maharaj. On the strength of public trust and cooperation, Shivaji Maharaj took up the responsibility of establishing Swarajya.
Establishment of Swaraj:
Shivaji Maharaj started the establishment of Swaraj from Mawar province. Dongrad area of Mawar was destitute and inaccessible. The Maharaja took advantage of the geographical location of Mawar to establish Swaraj.
The aim and objective of establishing Swaraj has been made clear in Mudra. Shikkamortab Shikka on paper. Sanskrit lines are written on the seal of the Maharaja,
Pratipachandralekhaev vardishnuvishwavandita. Shahsuno: Shivsayisha Mudra Bhadray Rajte.
The meaning of these lines is :
Shahaji’s son Shivaji is like the root of the moon of his Pratipada, a soft state for the welfare of the people.
Jahagiritil fort of Shivaji Maharaj was under the control of Adilsha. If you control the fort, you also control the area around it. Therefore, Shivaji Maharaj started efforts to capture the forts of Jahangir.
Adopting the strategy of Sama-Daam-Dand-Bheda, he started efforts to establish self-rule by capturing the forts of Murambadev, Toran, Kondhana, Purandar etc. Murambadev named the fort Rajgarh.
The work of building Swarajya was opposed by Adilshahi Watandar-Jahangirdar of Maharashtra. The motherland given by Adilshah was more dear to Daro than self-rule.
Those who opposed Shivaji Maharaj included chiefs like More of Javadi, Mohite of Supya, Ghorpade of Mudhond, Sawant of Wadi etc.
Shivaji appeared as a protector of Hinduism and declared war against the Mughal ruler. He awakened the spirit of patriotism among the youth of Maval district and created a group of capable and brave soldiers. With the help of his brave and patriotic soldiers, Shivaji was successful in establishing power over Javali, Rohinga, Junnar, Konkan, Kalyani etc.
Pratapgarh and Raigarh became the capital of the Maratha Empire. Shivaji’s father Shahjiraje had left two thousand soldiers. In a very short time, under his leadership, Shivaji had increased this number to ten thousand. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj belonged to the Bhosale family. During his administration the position of youth in the country’s army was gaining dominance.
Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Hindavi Swarajya, raised an army of boys named “Ganimi Kava”. Similarly, the children’s army was taught the art of attacking quickly and surprising the enemy.
Shivji Maharaj had captured the Adilsha fort of Jahangir. Since they were protecting their territory through forts, they started preparations to capture the fort of Jahangir.
There was a settlement named Javadi in the north-west of Satara district. Chandrarao More was against Shivaji Maharaj extending his rule. In 1656 AD, the Maharaja captured Javadi in a battle.
After the conquest of Javadi, Konkan annexed Kinarapati, Kalyan and Bhiwadi from the possession of Antilasa. After this victory, Afzal Khan became the leader who defeated Shivaji Maharaj. Afzal Khan came to power in 1659 and Shivaji Maharaj acted patiently and killed Afzal Khan.
