5th Grade Schedule (Self-Contained)

One question I am constantly being asked is what my 5th grade schedule looks like as a self-contained  teacher, so I wanted to share it with you. I personally love seeing other 5th grade schedules and how that plays into their instruction.

I think see other teacher’s schedules in the same grade level can help when developing your own class schedule. It can also really help put strategies and ideas that you learn from a teacher in a context when you see their schedule.

Seeing other teachers' schedules can help teachers schedule their own class times. Read this post to see my 5th grade schedule (self-contained).

Here is my schedule for the 2015-2016 school year (Click on the image to see a larger version that is easier to read):

5th grade schedule for a self-contained classroom

Now, let’s talk about a few things I want to point out and address form my schedule:

As you can see on a normal day (with the exception of Tuesdays), I have the following times for each subject:

  • Math : 1 hour and 40 minutes
  • Science and Social Studies : 30 minutes
  • Literacy : 3 hours and 10 minutes (district requirement)

As you notice there is no RTI or intervention time on the schedule. This is embedded into my daily schedule for each particular subject.

At the beginning of the year, we are given our schedules with literacy, specials, and lunch blocked off. Individually (or as a grade level), we work to schedule in our other subjects and subject our schedules for approval. The best part of this is that we can change our schedule at anytime as we see fit (with the exception of the blocked off areas and taking into account any intervention or support received).

As you can tell from my schedule, I have very limited time for science and social studies.  I have to heavily integrate these subjects in literacy. I do this primarily through read alouds, guided reading, and writing about science and social studies topics. I also keep a large collection of informational texts on the subjects I teach in the classroom library. I do not teach both science and social studies at the same time. I teach a unit of science and then a unit of social studies and we review old units regularly for homework.

January 27, 2015 at 12:59 am

Wow! I have to say I love your schedule. 3 hours for literacy and 1hr40 for math!! Mine is very different, but that is because we have 1 hour of Science and 40 minutes of Social Studies everyday. Leaves only 1 hour of literacy but we cope by integrating reading and writing into science and ss. Only way to do it! Beth easypeasyeducation

January 27, 2015 at 1:05 am

Beth, I wish we could have that much Science and Social Studies time everyday!. 🙁 We alternate among units so the kids get either Social Studies or Science for four weeks than vice versa. Time is so limited that I feel like we can never take it as deep as I would like. We do the opposite of you and integrate Science and Social Studies into Literacy.

What is interactive edit? It sounds good.

Interactive Edit is my language/grammar time. We work together to edit and correct sentences/paragraphs. I also sometimes directly teach language standards during this time. 😀

Guidance – done by the school counselor? Media – who teaches it and what do they cover?

January 30, 2015 at 11:35 am

Wow! You have so much instructional time. At my new school, we pretty much have 5 hours of instruction time two days a week, 4 hours of instruction time two days a week, and 3 hours and 40 minutes of instruction time one day a week. (We are a language school, so the kids have language for an hour every day.) I have found that we get A LOT of planning time, but I do have to use it very well in order to develop very well thought out plans that will get us to our goals as directly as possible. It has taken some adapting to (I have only been at the school for 11 weeks).

NO RECESS TIME? Sad…… We have 50 minutes of Math instruction time. I have NO IDEA how to teach 5th grade math effectively and best practices in that amount of time. We must do a number talk and 20 minutes of intervention time 3 days per week with specifically the low students. Ideas would be welcome.

Would you be willing to share the lesson plans you have created for ELA ( language skills, reading mini-lessons – I know guided reading is different do to what books the groups are using) or anchor charts you have used. I appreciate any help you can offer. I am loving your stuff and have already bought your reading bundle and interactive notebook one! Thank you for ALL you do!

Word problems involving time in 5th-grade math

Word problems are essential to 5th-grade math as they require students to apply their knowledge and skills to real-life situations. With time-related word problems, students are presented with scenarios that involve time calculations and require critical thinking to arrive at the correct answers. Solving these word problems reinforces time concepts and enhances students' problem-solving and analytical skills.

Here are a few examples of word problems involving time in 5th-grade math that students may encounter:

  • Maya started baking cookies at 3:45 p.m. She baked for 1 hour and 30 minutes. What time did she finish baking?
  • Emma wants to go swimming for 2 hours and 45 minutes. If she starts at 10:00 a.m., what time will she finish?
  • The school bus picks up Jack at his house at 7:15 a.m. It takes him 30 minutes to get ready. What time should Jack wake up to catch the bus?
  • Sarah went to the park at 2:30 p.m. She played for 1 hour and 15 minutes. What time did she leave the park?

To solve time word problems effectively, students should follow a systematic approach that involves analyzing the given information, identifying the unknowns, and choosing the appropriate time calculations. By breaking down the problem into smaller steps, students can simplify the process and arrive at the correct answers. Let's explore some tips for solving time word problems effectively.

Tips for solving time word problems effectively

Solving time word problems can be challenging for students, but they can confidently tackle these problems with the right strategies. Here are some tips to help students solve time word problems effectively :

  • Read the problem carefully : Read the problem and identify the key information about time. Pay attention to the given start or end times, durations, and any other time-related details mentioned in the problem.
  • Identify the unknowns : Determine what needs to be calculated or found in the problem. Is it the start time, end time, duration, or something else? Identify the unknowns to avoid confusion during the calculation process.
  • Convert to a consistent time format : If the problem involves analog and digital time formats, convert them to a consistent format to simplify the calculations. For example, convert analog time to digital format or vice versa.
  • Break down the problem : Break down the problem into smaller steps or intervals if necessary. This can help students organize their thoughts and make the problem more manageable. For example, if the problem involves multiple activities with different durations, consider solving each activity separately before combining the results.
  • Use visual aids : Visual aids such as number lines or diagrams can help understand the problem and visualize the time intervals. Encourage students to draw diagrams or use number lines to represent the information and track the time calculations.
  • Practice estimation : Estimation can be a helpful strategy for checking the reasonableness of the answers. Encourage students to estimate the answer before performing the calculations. If the estimated answer significantly differs from the calculated answer, they can review their work and identify potential errors.

By following these tips and practicing regularly, students can develop their problem-solving skills and become more confident in tackling time-word problems. Using real-life examples of these problems further enhances their understanding and makes the learning experience more engaging.

Incorporating real-life examples in time word problems

One effective way to engage students in time word problems is by incorporating real-life examples . By presenting problems that reflect situations they can relate to, students become more invested in problem-solving and develop a deeper understanding of time concepts.

Real-life examples make the problems more interesting and help students see the practical applications of time-related math skills.

Here are a few examples of time word problems that incorporate real-life scenarios:

  • John goes to the gym every day at 5:30 p.m. He spends 1 hour and 15 minutes at the gym. What time does he finish his workout?
  • Lisa has a piano lesson at 4:45 p.m. The lesson lasts for 45 minutes. What time will she finish her lesson?
  • Tom starts his homework at 7:00 p.m. He works for 1 hour and 30 minutes. What time will he finish his homework?

Using real-life scenarios, students can connect the abstract concept of time with their everyday experiences, making the learning process more meaningful. This approach encourages critical thinking as students analyze the information and apply their time-related math skills to solve the problems.

It also fosters a deeper understanding of time concepts and prepares students for real-world situations where time calculations are necessary.

  • Time Bingo : Create a bingo game where students have to match time intervals or time-related phrases to the corresponding analog or digital time representation on their bingo cards. This activity helps improve their recognition of time intervals and reinforces their ability to convert between different units.
  • Time Scavenger Hunt : Hide various clocks or time-related objects around the classroom or outdoor area. Provide students with clues that require them to find and identify the time shown on each clock. This activity helps develop their ability to read analog clocks accurately.
  • Time Storytelling : Ask students to create short stories or scenarios that involve time-related events or activities. They can then share their stories with the class, emphasizing the time calculations involved and challenging their peers to solve the time-related problems within the stories.
  • Time Relay Race : Divide students into teams and set up a relay race where each team member has to solve a time-related problem before passing the baton to the next team member. This activity promotes teamwork, critical thinking, and quick problem-solving skills.

Incorporating these interactive and engaging time activities into your child's learning routine can make mastering time concepts more enjoyable and memorable. These activities provide a break from traditional worksheets and word problems while still reinforcing key time skills.

What is a leap year?

2024 is a leap year, which means we have an extra day on February 29. Leap years happen every four years. We have leap years because the length of our calendar year (365 days) is not the exact same as the time it takes the Earth to orbit the sun (365.25 days). Leap years help our calendar stay in sync with the seasons.

Where can my students learn more about the leap year?

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of great children’s books about the leap year. We do recommend this video from Mystery Science that explains the phenomenon in a kid-friendly way.

We’d love to hear about how you and your students are observing the leap year! Email us at [email protected] with your ideas.

What to know as TCAPs near and Tennessee third, fourth graders face being held back

5th grade homework time

The widespread effects of a statewide third-grade reading and retention law will be felt again this year as test dates for the standardized Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program approach.

This year, thousands of fourth graders who opted for yearlong tutoring to avoid retention last year will also be affected by the law.

The law, passed in 2021, took effect in 2023. It hinges on scores for the English language arts section of the TCAP, which is also known as TNReady. Third graders who score as "below" or "approaching" proficiency in that section may face retention if additional steps are not taken. Fourth graders who fell short on last year's test but opted into summer school and tutoring must hit a specific growth goal to move on to fifth grade.

Here's what parents need to know about navigating the implications of the law.

When are TCAPs?

TCAPs are set to be administered between April 15-30 for grades 3-5. Testing dates will vary by district.

When will third and fourth grade TCAP scores be available?

TCAP scores are typically released in two waves over the summer and early fall each year. However, the Tennessee Department of Education will release some scores and data early for third and fourth graders affected by the reading law.

English language arts scores for third graders will be released to districts on May 20 and growth data for fourth graders will be released on July 1. It will be up to districts to relay that information to parents and legal guardians.

How many could be held back?

As the reading law took effect last year, 60% of third grades fell short of the state's reading benchmark . That number does not factor in automatic exemptions. After exemptions, retakes, summer school and the appeal process all unfolded, just 1.2% of last year's third graders were held back under the reading law, which totaled just under 900 students.

Learn more: Only 1.2% of Tennessee third graders held back after reading law rollout

However, more than 12,000 opted into yearlong tutoring in fourth grade. Those students must now show adequate growth or again face retention. A state education department projection estimates up to 6,000 of those fourth graders may be retained this year.

That means that out of the roughly 75,000 students who were third graders in the 2022-23 school year, anywhere between approximately 8-9% of them could ultimately be held back by the end of the current school year. That number includes the initial 1.2% along with the projected 5,000-6,000 more at risk in fourth grade.

Are there exceptions for third graders?

Some third graders whose scores fall short can move on to fourth grade without any further action. Those students include:

  • English language learners who have received less than two years of English language arts instruction
  • Those who were held back in a previous grade
  • Students with disabilities or suspected disabilities that impact their literacy development

It is up to the districts to sort out those students and inform parents.

Are there exceptions for fourth graders?

No, unless a proposed amendment to the reading law passes and takes effect immediately after. That measure is still pending in the state legislature, which is still in session. Sessions typically conclude somewhere between late March and mid-April.

What options do third graders have to move on?

Third graders who score as approaching proficiency must complete one of the following to move on to fourth grade:

  • Retest and score on grade level, with a retest window of May 22-31
  • Enroll in summer school, meet 90% attendance and show adequate growth
  • Have a free state-provided tutor for the entirety of fourth grade

Additionally, third graders who score at or above the 50th percentile on their spring reading screening test can also move on if they enroll in tutoring for the entirety of fourth grade.

The State Board of Education defines "adequate growth" as a student scoring at least five percentage points higher on a post-summer school test than their baseline score. The baseline can be either their initial TCAP English language arts score or their retake score.

Third graders who score as below proficiency have the following options to move on:

  • Enroll in summer school with 90% attendance rate  and  have a free state-provided tutor for the entirety of fourth grade

Retake scores will be given to districts within two days of testing. Retesting and summer school dates vary by district. Students who opt for fourth grade tutoring must demonstrate adequate growth on their TCAP the following spring.

What goals must fourth graders meet to move on to fifth grade?

Fourth graders enrolled in tutoring under the reading law must either score as "meeting" or "exceeding" expectations, or show adequate growth on the English language arts section of their spring TCAP.

The state's formula for adequate growth for fourth graders factors in the student's English language arts score on the TCAP and the probability that they will eventually reach proficiency. The growth goal is individualized to each student.

Adequate growth data will be sent out to districts by July 1.

Can I file an appeal?

Appeals are only open for third graders, unless state lawmakers pass a provision that also includes this year's fourth graders.

Appeals are open for third graders who scored as approaching expectations and faced a catastrophic event that impacted their ability to perform on the TCAP. The appeal window will be open from May 28-June 28. Once parents and legal guardians are notified of a retention decision, they have 14 days to file the appeal. Authorized school personnel are also allowed to file an appeal on behalf of a parent or legal guardian.

When will retention decisions be made?

Final retention notifications will be made by July 12. Some decisions may be made sooner for students who are not in summer programming.

Full timeline for third, fourth grade retention

Here are all the key dates in one place for 2024:

  • May 20: English language arts TCAP scores for third graders released to districts
  • May 22-May 31: Third grade English language arts TCAP retake window
  • May 28-June 28: Appeal window for third graders
  • By July 1: Adequate growth data for fourth grade students released to districts
  • July 12 : Final retention notifications made, specifically for students who participated in summer programming

Summer programming dates will vary by district.

What about the pending amendment to state law?

An amendment to a bill currently making its way through the state legislature may carve out additional paths for fourth graders and others.

The following provisions would apply to students in grades 4-8 who score as "below" or "approaching" on the English language arts section of the TCAP:

  • They must be allowed to retake the English language arts section of the TCAP in a written format
  • If they still score as "below" or "approaching" on the retake, they must attend a learning loss bridge camp, maintain a 90% attendance rate and show adequate growth on the post test — meaning they must score at least five percentage points higher than their benchmark test
  • After completing the bridge camp and post-test requirements, they must be assigned a tutor for the entirety of the following school year

Under the proposal, students must not be retained more than once in grades 4-8.

The measures are attached to a much larger bill, known as an omnibus, that proposes sweeping changes to the state's public education system. The proposal is still working its way through the state legislature. If it ultimately passes, it's not clear if it would apply to this year's fourth graders or take effect next year.

Where can I learn more?

Biden and Trump trade accusations at southern border

The two leading presidential candidates blasted each other on immigration, a likely preview of the campaign to come.

BROWNSVILLE, Tex. — President Biden and former president Donald Trump visited separate Texas border towns 300 miles apart on Thursday, blaming each other for a surge in illegal immigration and seeking to take the offensive on an issue that is shaping up to be a critical and volatile factor in this year’s presidential contest.

2024 presidential election

5th grade homework time

Biden used his visit to Brownsville, a Democratic stronghold, to blame Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate , for killing a bipartisan border bill that would have provided $20 billion to hire thousands of new Border Patrol agents and asylum officers and increase detention capacity. The measure also would have included a trigger mechanism to effectively shut down the border, which Biden said he would have been willing to invoke.

Biden said the bill was on its way to passage until Trump “came along and said, ‘Don’t do that, it will benefit the incumbent.’” The president added sarcastically, “It’s a hell of a way to do business in the United States of America.”

Addressing Republican members of Congress, Biden urged them to “show a little spine” and demonstrate independence from Trump. “Let’s remember who we work for, for God’s sake,” Biden said. He ended by addressing Trump directly: “Instead of playing politics with this issue, join me — or I’ll join you — in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill. We can do it together.”

About 300 miles away in Eagle Pass, Trump renewed his embrace of a tough-on-immigration message that was central to his political rise in 2016 and that he has made a centerpiece of his third presidential campaign. “This is a Joe Biden invasion, this is a Biden invasion,” the former president said of the influx of illegal migrants.

“The United States is being overrun by the Biden migrant crime,” Trump added. “It’s a new form of vicious violation to our country.” Experts say most of the evidence suggests that undocumented immigrants do not cause more crime.

The remarkable split-screen — the presidential contenders each delivered their speeches at about the same time — provided a preview of what could be a long and bitter general election campaign. Biden took office announcing his determination to handle immigration more humanely than Trump, whose rhetoric on migrants was often incendiary. But he has faced periodic images of chaos at the border during his presidency, and in recent weeks he has taken a harder line.

Ahead of his remarks, Biden received a briefing from Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In each session, presenters highlighted how few resources they have to address the surge of migration at the border, the flow of fentanyl and the need to process asylum claims.

Biden, in response, continually stressed that the bipartisan border security bill would have allowed for the hiring of significantly more personnel and help alleviate each agency’s problems.

Biden, who polls show faces widespread disapproval of his handling of immigration, has in recent weeks tried to take control of the issue by reminding voters that he embraced the bipartisan immigration measure and its tough enforcement provisions. Republican lawmakers had demanded border security measures as part of a sweeping aid bill for Ukraine and Israel, but they refused to back the package after Trump said on Truth Social that enacting it would be “another Gift to the Radical Left Democrats.”

Trump has long made immigration the focus of his “America First” agenda. He campaigned in 2016 on building a U.S.-Mexico border wall and has vowed to enact “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history” in a second term. He has repeatedly blamed Biden for a record number of apprehensions since 2021.

Trump has also used dehumanizing language to describe undocumented immigrants, suggesting that they are waging an “invasion” of the United States and accusing them of “poisoning the blood of our country,” prompting civil rights activists and historians to compare his language to Nazi rhetoric.

On Thursday, the former president cast undocumented immigrants as deeply alien. “We have languages coming into our country, we have nobody that even speaks those languages,” he said. “They’re truly foreign languages, nobody speaks them. They’re pouring into our country and they’re bringing with them tremendous problems, including medical problems, as you know.”

Biden and Trump chose border cities for their Thursday appearances that reflect their dueling approaches to immigration. Brownsville is in sync with Democrats’ traditional approach of balancing border security with humanitarian considerations. Eagle Pass, by contrast, has become a symbol of Republican defiance against Biden’s handling of immigration. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) seized a park in the city earlier this year, shutting out U.S. Border Patrol agents who had long used it as a staging point.

Illegal border crossings soared in the months after Biden took office, signaling a more relaxed policy and immediately rolling back many Trump-era restrictions. As immigration surged, Biden warned that he would still enforce immigration laws, and he temporarily kept in place a Trump pandemic policy known as Title 42 that allowed authorities to quickly expel border crossers.

Even so, the number of people taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol has reached the highest levels in the agency’s 100-year history under Biden, averaging 2 million per year.

In the U.S. interior, the Biden administration has said that ICE agents should not arrest someone just for being undocumented, to prevent longtime residents from being deported. Officials say they are deporting or removing record numbers of border crossers and prioritizing the removal of serious offenders. Many migrants say they are surrendering to seek protection in the United States and permission to work.

Biden laid the blame for the demise of the bipartisan border bill at the feet of Trump and his Republican allies.

“I want the people to understand clearly what happened here: This bill was in the United States Senate, was on its way to being passed, and it was derailed by rank partisan politics,” Biden said. “The U.S. Senate needs to reconsider this bill, and those senators who oppose it need to set politics aside and pass it on the merits, not whether it’s going to benefit one party or the other party.”

In Eagle Pass, Trump, alongside Abbott, received a briefing on Operation Lone Star, Abbott’s state-led border crackdown. He then took a tour of Shelby Park and walked toward the Rio Grande, the river separating the United States and Mexico. People across the border shouted his name as he took the tour.

Trump praised Texas’ immigration policies, while criticizing Democratic governors in Arizona and California for not doing enough to secure the border.

Trump continued to paint undocumented immigrants as violent, describing them as “coming from jails and they’re coming from prisons and they’re coming from mental institutions.”

Most of those arrested at the southern border do not have criminal convictions , federal data show.

A February Gallup survey found that voters ranked immigration as the single most important problem facing the country, followed by the government, the economy and inflation. A Marquette Law School national poll this month found 53 percent of registered voters saying Trump would do a better job handling the issue, while 25 percent said Biden would.

Frustrated by Congress’s inaction, Biden has been considering executive actions that could limit unauthorized migration and restrict the asylum process, according to administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. But he did not announce any new actions Thursday, and it is not clear if the White House will be able to identify actions the president can take without congressional authorization.

Many Democratic operatives concede that it would be difficult for Biden to completely upend the political dynamic on immigration. But the White House hopes that his tougher stance, and his repeated reminders that he was eager to sign a border enforcement bill that Trump torpedoed, can at a minimum blunt Republicans’ advantage on the issue.

Trump’s immigration platform includes reinstating a travel ban from his previous presidential term that restricted people from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The Trump campaign has also said he would sign an executive order that would withhold passports, Social Security numbers and other government benefits from the children of undocumented immigrants.

While Biden has taken political hits on immigration since becoming president, Trump also faced a backlash during his own time in the White House for some of his harder-hitting policies. As president, Trump signed executive orders to enact his travel ban, but it faced numerous court challenges and was significantly reduced in scope. His administration also drew fire for a policy of separating migrant families, which was seen even by some conservatives as unduly harsh.

Trump made building a border wall a central promise of his 2016 campaign, and his administration built more than 450 miles of new border fencing at a cost of $11 billion. Despite that construction, illegal border crossings have surged from 500,000 per year in 2020 to more than 2 million last year.

In Thursday’s appearance at Eagle Pass, the former president said that he had spoken to the parents of Laken Hope Riley , a Georgia nursing student who was allegedly killed by Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan migrant. U.S. government records show Ibarra came to the country in 2022 after crossing the border illegally. Riley’s death is one of several cases in recent years that Republican politicians have highlighted to depict migrants as dangerous.

“The monster charged in the death is an illegal alien migrant, who was led into our country, and released into our communities by Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump said. “Joe Biden will never say Laken Riley’s name, but we will say it.”

Scott Clement, Nick Miroff, Maria Sacchetti and Arelis R. Hernández contributed to this report.
