Research Assistantships

TGS recommends guidelines for relationships between faculty and their RAs. See  best practices for graduate Research Assistants (RAs).

Research assistantships are awarded to students who assist faculty members on research projects either at the university or in the field while continuing the University’s academic mission and their own academic development and training.

Requirements

If the assistantship is funded through a sponsored agreement, then the graduate student must be conducting activities necessary to the sponsored agreement.

The work performed as a research assistant is not only part of the faculty member’s research project, but also supports the student’s dissertation research (or preparation for that research) while satisfying a degree requirement.

Students pursuing their Research Assistantship also need to review the   Regulations Governing Recipients of University Assistance .

They may also be involved in projects like genetic, biochemical, and behavioral experiments. Their role is often centered around gathering data and analyzing that data, but they may also be involved in administrative duties like securing IRB approval for human subjects research.

Description

Southern New Hampshire University is a team of innovators. World changers. Individuals who believe in progress with purpose. Since 1932, our people-centered strategy has defined us — and helped us grow a team that now serves over 180,000 learners worldwide.

Our mission to transform lives is made possible by talented people who bring diverse industry experience, backgrounds and skills to the university. And today, we're ready to expand our reach. All we need is you.

The opportunity

The Center for Higher Education Policy and Practice (CHEPP) is a non-partisan higher education research and policy organization grounded in the experiences of higher education learners and practitioners. We believe that our educational system can only realize its full potential when it offers a pathway to social and economic mobility for all learners, not just a select few. Working adults, caregivers, veterans – these learners don’t fit the traditional college student profile, but they are the new face of higher education.

As part of Southern New Hampshire University and drawing on data and analysis from researchers and practitioners, CHEPP is on a mission to show how centering the needs of today’s learners can help advance learner-centric policies in that will allow them to thrive. We’re conducting research that tackles subjects like basic needs funding , competency-based education , and wraparound supports for learners because we know that strong academic, financial, and social support is a prerequisite for successfully obtaining a postsecondary degree.

CHEPP collaborates with policymakers to develop scalable, sustainable policy solutions from a learner-centered perspective. We also partner with colleges, universities, membership organizations, and research centers to advocate for higher education policy that is both attentive to their needs and mindful of institutional realities. CHEPP is also convening decisionmakers in federal and state government and at institutions of higher education to craft policies that break down traditional barriers to student success and equitable outcomes. Building a higher education system that works for all learners demands a fundamental redesign of institutions and programs, and leaders and lawmakers have an important role to play in this transformation.

CHEPP is growing its team and seeks a graduate student assistant to support the development of research and resources. The research function of the Center produces resources on a broad range of policy matters evolving at the federal level and informing federal policy aligned with the Center’s policy agenda. This includes topical research that can both interpret policy trends and inform policy formulation. Graduate Assistants receive an hourly rate and tuition for up to two classes per term. The position duties will include the following key activities:

  • Support the development of resources on CHEPP priority issues and policy initiatives.
  • Interpret and communicate the potential effect of policy on the higher education ecosystem and SNHU.
  • Conduct policy research that will provide insights into today’s learners, on priority issues, and issues affecting CHEPP’s strategy and day to day business.
  • Gather, synthesize, and analyze primary and secondary data to produce insights that may be shared with U.S. policymakers.
  • Conduct environmental scans of the higher education landscape to inform policy-related research and initiatives.
  • Write research briefs, reports, insights, and summary documents to support CHEPP’s work as a research center.
  • Track signals and trends in the broader higher education landscape to inform CHEPP’s day-to-day work and intelligence.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Actively enrolled in a graduate program at SNHU.
  • Interest in increasing access and equity in higher education.
  • Some experience and familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research.

We believe real innovation comes from inclusion - where different experiences, perspectives and talents are celebrated. So if you're wondering whether SNHU is right for you, take the leap and apply. You might be just the person we're looking for.

Expect the unexpected

As a university, it’s no surprise we employ many talented academics. What you may not know is that SNHU isn’t solely made up of folks with higher ed experience. Not even close.
