Mobile Phones for Students: Boon or Bane?

Everything in life has a dual nature- day and night, good and bad, rich and poor, health and illness. All things in the universe can be a boon (good) or a bane (bad) or in other words, a blessing or a curse. So it is with mobile phones.

Mobile phone usage is growing at a rapid rate. With smartphones, people have access to a variety of information at their fingertips. Today, the world is unimaginable without the omnipresent mobile phones. From the children aged 9 to the elderly aged 90, everyone has a smartphone now.

Before we continue, here are some cold hard facts regarding mobile phones:

  • 56% of the children in the age group of 8-12 have a mobile phone
  • 21% of children aged 8 years use a smartphone
  • The average age of a child when he/she receive his first mobile phone is 12.
  • 51% of the high school students carry their mobile phone to school every day.
  • Children under 9 years spent at least 2 hours every day staring at mobile screens.

Are all the above facts for good or is mobile usage going to harm your child in a huge way? It depends on how the smartphone is used.

Mobile Phones: Boon or Bane?

Let’s start with the negatives first.

Mobile Phones: Bane

Everyone knows how harmful mobile phones can be, especially for children.

  • Mobile phones emit bright blue light which harms the eye of children on prolonged exposure.
  • Children get addicted to online gaming due to the use of mobile phones
  • Addiction to social media is the aftermath of mobile phones usage
  • Children become couch potatoes as they cling on to their mobile phones and lose the opportunity to exercise and remain fit.
  • Children might be exposed to undesirable content online and it is difficult to monitor what they are doing every second.

Everything is best when used in moderation and this is the case with mobile phones.  Parents and teachers must not ban, but regulate the use of mobile phones at home and at school.

At home, parents must supervise the use of mobile phones and monitor the content of the websites and apps their children are using.  They should also restrict the excessive use of mobile phones by clearly defining at what times they can be used.

During examination time, children must limit time sinks like mobile phones and switch them off or hand them to the parents. At school, the use of mobile phones should be forbidden during class hours so students don’t get distracted. This is already being followed and implemented across many institutions.

Mobile Phones: Boon

Enough has been said about how mobile phones make children addicted and ruin their lives. Let us look at some positive things about mobile phone usage by children.

Here are some statistics on how parents and teachers feel about the usage of mobile phones for children.

  • 62% of parents feel that mobile phones promote children’s education.
  • 45% of parents bought or plan to buy mobile phones to aid in their children’s education.
  • 68% of parents feel that mobile phones can teach children how to read.
  • 57% of parents feel that mobile phones help children in doing maths.
  • 32% of parents feel that mobile phones should be used in the classroom.
  • 62% of parents feel that mobile phones promote children’s education
  • 86% of school principals feel that it is important for students to use mobile phones for their school work.
  • 71% of teachers use online educational apps for teaching.
  • 64% of teachers use educational websites for teaching.

Apart from this, mobile phones help parents and teachers to access children at all times with a call. Students can also call their parents in case of an emergency, thus ensuring their safety.

All the above just proves that most parents and teachers feel that mobile phones can be a blessing. However, they have to be used in a productive manner by children to enhance their knowledge.

Should Children Use Mobile Phones or Not?

There’s no right answer to this question as it depends on how the phones are used. Instead of wasting time playing online games or posting on social media, children must optimise their use of mobile phones by amassing knowledge and enriching their talent. This will make mobile phones a boon for all children.

What are the ways in which mobile phones can be used productively by children?

Academically, children can use mobile phones to:

  • Expand their knowledge
  • Improve their English skills as a majority of language online is in English
  • Improve their vocabulary
  • Strengthen their mathematical ability
  • Understand science concepts
  • Improve their creativity
  • Download educational apps
  • Improve their dexterity and reflexes

If you’re deciding whether you should get your child a smartphone, remember that mobile phones are not all bad. Of course, kids will have fun with them, but they can still be used for educational purposes. Students can use mobile phones to practice their academic lessons and test themselves using online practice learning sites such as LetsPractise.

Mobile Phone – A Boon or Bane

The mobile phone first appeared in India sometime in the nineties. It was a bulky box quite similar to the landlines we still use today. It had an equally big antenna  and was heavy and cumbersome to carry. That was just the beginning. Very soon they were all over the place. With the alarming speed at which they shrunk in size, these pocket sized wonders, sure packed a punch. The mobiles of today are gizmos that can do multiple functions. They can send text messages, they can send and receive video messages and they have a host of facilities that somehow snake the – talk on the move” function seem redundant. As is the case with every invention, with time the prices crashed and today these little things are available for as less as five hundred Indian rupees. In India almost every one, everywhere, seems to have one. The vegetable vendor, the bus conductor, students, the office goers, almost everybody irrespective of economic status has a cell phone. This little midget has taken the world by storm.

Thanks to the cell phone everybody is available almost all of the time. It’s a boon for people who do a lot of field work. It means the offices they work for can keep in touch with them. Also in cases of emergency, like you are stuck in a road jam or in some catastrophe, all you have to do is whip out your phone and call for help or call your family to put their minds at ease. You can text one message to several people at the same time. Through your cell you can go online and check your email. You can playgames on your cell phone to kill time, not the best of uses, but a use nonetheless. You can even listen to music on the cell, watch video clippings and if you are of the artistic bend and wish to click a spontaneous photograph, viola!! One click on the cell phone and you are done.

Everywhere you go, you are swarmed by people glued to their cell phones. It has reached the proportions where often one sees a young couple walking down the beach hand in hand; both their other hands holding on to their individual cells talking to other people. It means that people are talking a lot more than they used to for sure. It means that when you visit a friend for dinner most ofthe time everybody is busy on their individual cells. It also means that people drive recklessly-their one ear and one hand occupied by the cell. However, it is the total invasion of privacy which cell phones have caused which is scary. People are recording videos of other people without their knowledge and then selling them. Advertising through text messages has become such a nuisance that you have your cell phone beeping almost all the time. In case of an emergency, often, the network is jammed thanks to the indiscriminate use of cell phones. Several health risks have been projected by the misuse of the cell phone; one of them being the decreased count of sperm in men due to prolonged use. Kids have been caught storing answers on the cell phone to use during examinations.

What use is technology if it makes us restless, impatient and deprives us of the moments that really matter-a cup of hot tea had against the backdrop of the pitter patter of the rain, a walk on the beach with a loved one. What use is it if it robs us of the joy of taking a walk down the beach listening to the sound of waves? With every technology, along with its uses come the misuses and it is the user’s responsibility to use technology with caution.

250 Words Essay on Mobile A Boon Or Bane

Mobile phones have changed the way we live. They are small devices that let us talk, send messages, and use the internet from almost anywhere. Many people think about whether mobile phones are good or bad for us.

Connecting People

One of the best things about mobile phones is that they help us stay in touch with family and friends. No matter where we are, we can call or message someone in an instant. This is very helpful in emergencies or when we need to share important news.

Learning and Fun

Mobile phones can be tools for learning. There are apps for reading, math, and even learning new languages. They also have games and videos that can be fun and sometimes teach us new things.

Health and Safety

Mobile phones can keep us safe. We can call for help if we are in danger. They also have apps that can track our steps or remind us to drink water, which is good for our health.

Distractions and Problems

Even though mobile phones have many good points, they can also cause problems. They can distract us from homework or sleep. Some people also use them too much and forget to talk to people face-to-face.

In the end, mobile phones have both good and bad sides. It’s up to us to use them in ways that help us and not let them get in the way of living healthy and happy lives. We should remember that like any tool, the value of mobile phones depends on how we use them.

500 Words Essay on Mobile A Boon Or Bane

Introduction to mobile phones.

Mobile phones have become a big part of our lives. They are small computers that we can carry in our pockets. With a mobile phone, you can talk to someone far away, send messages, take pictures, and even go on the internet. Many people think mobile phones are very useful. But some worry that they can also cause problems.

Mobile Phones as a Boon

First, let’s talk about the good things mobile phones bring to us. They make it easy to talk to family and friends no matter where they are. This is great for keeping in touch and sharing news quickly. Also, if you are in trouble or lost, you can call for help.

Mobile phones are also great for learning. You can find a lot of information on the internet. Students can use mobile apps for studying and doing homework. Plus, if you like taking photos or making videos, a mobile phone is a handy tool.

Another good thing is that mobile phones can help us stay safe. There are apps that can tell you if there is bad weather coming or if there is something dangerous happening near you.

Mobile Phones as a Bane

Now, let’s talk about the problems mobile phones can cause. One big worry is that they can be distracting. For example, if you are looking at your phone all the time, you might not pay attention in class or when you are walking on the road, which can be dangerous.

Another problem is that spending too much time on your phone can make you feel lonely. Even if you are talking to people online, it’s not the same as being with them in person. Some people also get sad when they see others having fun on social media and feel like they are missing out.

Mobile phones can also be bad for your health. Looking at a screen for a long time can hurt your eyes. And if you use your phone before bed, it might be hard to fall asleep.

Balance is Key

So, is a mobile phone a boon or a bane? It’s actually both. It can be a great tool that helps us in many ways. But if we use it too much or in the wrong way, it can cause problems.

The important thing is to find a balance. Use your mobile phone when you need it, but don’t let it take over your life. Make sure to spend time with people face to face, and don’t forget to look up from your screen to see the world around you.

In conclusion, mobile phones have both good and bad sides. They can help us stay connected, learn new things, and stay safe. But they can also distract us, make us feel lonely, and hurt our health if we’re not careful. It’s up to us to use mobile phones in a smart way so that we get the benefits without the problems. Remember, it’s not the phone itself that’s good or bad, but how we choose to use it.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Thanks a lot for sharing the essay on "Is mobile phone a boon or bane".

It is a very useful essay. Thanks for sharing this.

This Saturday I should be ready to face debate in my school on this topic , I just gone through it once,It is very nice THANK YOU for sharing.

According to me as far as the children are concerned the mobiles are bane to them as it hinders the very progress in many ways. Children are attracted to the mobiles because they can fiddle with various features and want to play the games stored in it. But the mobile phone ultra rays are bad for the eyes and soon the children will get the eye sight problems. And those who are addicted to the mobiles, the children never listen to the parents commands and wants to have the phones on hand. The diversion tactic also does not work as invariably more people are having the cell phones on hand and the child would recollect his phone immediately through adamant attitude. As far as possible the parents should not use the cell phones in front of the child otherwise they have to part with the phones over the years to come.

This response being posted after the corona lock down has been eased across the country and the schools remain shut and the academic year is being continued through online education and thus mobile phones has become suddenly important and boon to the children as many schools are conducting online classes and the children need to attend those classes taking notes, understanding the subjects and submitting the notes. All these are now happening through the mobile phones and the children cannot escape the excuse as every parent has the mobile phone and they need to log in for their children classes.

Mobile Phone Boon Or Bane Essay For School Students

Mobile telephone: boon or bane? Essay, Paragraph for Class 9, 10, 11 and 12, Competitive Examination.

Mobile telephone: boon or bane?

In recent decades, there have been many advances in the communications industry. Undoubtedly, one of the most important of these advances has been the mobile telephone.

The mobile telephone is a particularly important invention because it enables people to contact other people by means of a device that they can carry around. Before its invention, people who wanted to be in telephone contact with someone had to make the call either from a telephone in a private house or from a public telephone box.

Being able to make a call from a telephone that you can carry about has revolutionized communication by telephone. If you need to contact someone on a business matter, you can use your mobile. There is no danger of your missing out on an important business opportunity because of communication difficulties.

Instant communication from everywhere, apart from places where it is not possible to get a clear signal, has to be an advantage, whether you are in a business, social or domestic situation. For example, it is useful to be able to ring your wife from a train to say that it has been very much delayed because of some problems on the line and that you will be home late. This stops her from worrying, and probably from cooking a dinner that would otherwise end up being burnt.

Similarly, it is a good thing to be able to forewarn someone with whom you plan to have dinner in a restaurant that you are either going to be late or unable to turn up at all. Such communication can save a friendship.

Perhaps the most important advantage of the mobile telephone is the fact that it can be used in an emergency situation. For example, if a teenage girl misses the last bus home, she can ring her parents and get them to come and get her, without having to worry about searching for the nearest telephone box. Similarly, if someone sees a person being attacked in the street by a thug, he can use his mobile telephone to call the police or an ambulance. That could save a life.

These then are some of the advantages of the mobile telephone, but they undoubtedly have disadvantages. One of the most important of these is the intrusion into the lives of others. Some mobile telephone users ignore the fact that they are probably disturbing the people around them.

You only have to travel in a bus or train to be aware of this problem. A train journey can be absolutely ruined by the nearby presence of someone who is using the train carriage like a mini- office. The person spends the whole journey conducting by mobile telephone the business which he is not able to conduct face to face.

Buses are particularly popular with mobile telephone users. Fellow passengers may forgive an urgent call to the boss to say that the caller has been unavoidably delayed, but far too many bus passengers use their telephones simply to pass the time by chatting to their friends. The main complaint that people make about mobile telephones is that people use them to send absolutely unnecessary and trivial information, such as “I’ve just got on the bus. I should be home in about five minutes. What’s on TV tonight?”

There are advantages and disadvantages connected with mobile telephones. I think that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, provided people use them sensibly.

There is no need to let yourself fall in a trap because of such a small device. Instead keep a balance. Don’t overuse it. Give more importance to spending time with your family and friends. This action will help you grow more in life rather than spending time on your mobile phone mindlessly.

Distraction for students

They keep thinking about which game to play, which new application to download and many such things. Clicking hundreds of pictures and then later sitting and editing them has become everyday habit for them. Parents become worried about their child’s future seeing such habits. And then the pressure of scoring high marks starts building up. And if the child does not perform upto his/ her parents expectation then there are mixture of emotions running through the child’s mind. Instead of suffering, it’s better to make a time-table for your studies and accordingly balance your mobile usage.

Mobile phones have become like an addiction for some people out there. They don’t understand the gravity of this situation unless and until they experience some form of suffering. This addiction is not for for a particular age group. Right from small children to adults, the addiction is almost the same. Users just don’t want to keep aside their phone for a while. Always remember it’s important to have a limit for everything in life. Overuse will harm you only. Right and mindful use will give benefit you. Because one you become addicted to this device, it’s hard to come out of it. Therefore keep a check on how much time you are spending on your phone. 562 Words Essay on mobile phone: a boon to modern civilization

essay on mobile phones boon

We are living in an electronic age. The whole world is taking a new turn with every fraction of time. It has given birth to globalization. The world has been contracted and concised at a tip.

There are a lot of new means of communication which have made our life so simple and easy going. Mobile phone can be seen as the most used present day phenomenon in this fast growing time. Mobile phone is a revolutionary step in the field of tele-communication.

We had the days when the telephones only served the purpose of communication through sound. Mobile phone has completely changed the concept of the telephoning. Now a phone is not only a mere phone but it is a lot in itself.

A mobile phone works on a unique networked system which needs no wiring, no fixation and no botheration. Originally it was used in cars, airlines, and passanger trains but increasingly it is becoming ubiquitous. It is basically low- power radio telephone. In this magical system calls go through radio transmitters that are located within small geographical unit which are known as cells.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Since each cell’s signals are too weak to interfere with those of other cells operating on the same frequencies and more channels can be used than would be possible with high power radio frequency transmission. Narrow-band frequency modulation (FM) is the most common mode of transmission, each message is assigned a carrier, unique to the cell from which it is transmitted.

The cellular phone was first tested in 1978. The cellular market in Britain alone had grown at a rapid rate to 8.5 million users by 1997. In Japan it is as high as one mobile phone per ten people. However, when the number of cellulars users had increased many new subscribers are low users. In the United Kingdom cable operators are giving some five lakh extra subscribers per month. Presently China tops the list of the mobile user countries. India does not lag behind. It is fast approaching to equallize or even supercedes the status of China.

When we think over the advantage of a cellular phone in comparison to the old rigid telephones, we can say that the greatest advantage of the cellular phone is that it can be used anywhere, anytime. It can send a message, store a date.

It can be used as computer and a whole world in one’s hand. As for the instant information, nature of a cellular phone it has an advantage in life controlled by the information that continues changing by a minute unit of advanced information oriented society. Exchange of information has become do at sight by what was telephoned anywhere. By it, update speed of the whole information has become fast. No doubt, it has changed the whole scenario of the world.

The cellular phone or the mobile phone has become necessity for today’s world. But the new generation is misusing it by distorting its uses. Some innocent people are being exploited through it. MMS, video clippings, picture messaging are some of the ways which are being misused. There should be strict legal procedure against such distortion of this cellular age.

One cannot deny the change in life with the change of time but when this change is over-exposed it is called pollution. We must balance these two phenomena in order to create a healthy world.

Mobile Phones Boon or Bane?

Introduced in the nineties the bulky box was a rich man’s delight. In less than ten years, it became every man’s pocket item, irrespective of one’s socio-economic status. From a premium segment item, it became everyone’s necessity and prices got slashed to unimaginable levels. With time, the mobile phones underwent many transformations. At an alarming speed, they shrunk in size to pocket-sized wonders and equally soon, their utility diversified.

Primarily used for simple telephonic conversations in case of emergency or urgency, mobile phones were used for sending text messages, playing games, for internet browsing, etc.

The mobile phones of today are gizmos that perform multiple functions. They can send text messages, send and receive videos,

be used for accessing e-books, aid in direction or route finding, click pictures, and are used for a host of other functions. In India, almost everyone everywhere seems to have a mobile phone. The vegetable vendor, the bus conductor, students, the office goers, almost everybody irrespective of economic status has a cell phone. This by little midget has taken the world b storm. Every where – malls, metro, buses, etc., one is swarmed by people glued to their cell phones.

Indeed, the myriad uses of this little box have eased life manifold and brought a revolution in the world. Through text applications like whatsapp, we chat, etc., one can connect with anyone in any part of the world. The craze among teenagers and youngsters to get hold of the latest model of this magical device is immense.

However, this little device of wonder has had many unfavourable repercussions as well. The invention and addition of all the advanced features have led to excessive use of it and complicated life. At homes, all members are most engaged in their phones and interact less with others.

It also drifts students away from studies as almost all the time they are glued to their phones and devote less time to their books. This negatively affects their performance in schools and colleges and leads to poor grades. Also, there is a risk of invasion of privacy. People record videos of other people or click their pictures without their knowledge.

The nominal call rates allow spammers to trouble others especially girls with unwanted calls and messages on whatsapp and social media applications and sites. At the same time, advertising through text messages makes one’s cell phone keep beeping all the time and is a nuisance.

In case of emergency, often the network is jammed due to indiscriminate use by all. Students have also been caught storing answers on the cell phone to use during exams.

Lastly, several health risks have also been projected by over use of mobiles like slow brain damage, sleep disorders, reduced productivity, etc.

Thus, with every technology, along with its uses, come misuses and it is the user’s responsibility to strike a balance and use it with caution. One must not forget that human is the master of technology and not its slave.

Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.
