Health is Wealth Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Speech on health is wealth -.

Health is the highest wealth for a human being in their entire life. One can survive without having money but no one can survive without good health. Something that we cannot buy with money is health. But we can cure it and take care of it with the help of money when needed. It is a real treasure. Unless you stay healthy nothing you work for or you earn can be enjoyed.

Health is Wealth Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

10 Lines Speech on Health is Wealth

An American philosopher named Ralph Waldo Emerson is the one who created "Health is Wealth".

Only a healthy person can live a happier and long life.

Nothing is more important to anyone than health in this world.

We should always try our best to keep ourselves healthy.

Success will always chase healthy people.

A peaceful mind and body can automatically earn both health and wealth.

We can save huge money on medical bills by making our mind and body physically fit and healthy by following a healthy lifestyle.

Good health helps us to achieve everything.

In general people who are healthy can work more when compared to people who are ailing from disease.

We ultimately lose interest in everything happening around us when our health is not good or fails to cooperate with us.

Short speech on Health is Wealth

Good health is one of the main elements of happiness that every person needs in their life. We can see many people around us who are living happily without having a lot of money and similarly someone who is having more money but is unhealthy will not be totally happy. However no one can buy good health with their wealth.

Healthy life

If someone wants a healthy life then they have to follow many rules and also sacrifice many things in their daily routines. There is a saying that without any sacrifices and hard work we cannot earn something. A healthy lifestyle is the highest blessing that should not be taken for granted by us. We ourselves are only responsible for our health. So make a healthy lifestyle a priority.

Always strive to keep a cheerful as well as a concentrated routine. It is very necessary to plan ahead of time in any case one must maintain a good bodily, mental and emotional state and no counselor or professional can assist you unless you deserve to live. The will to live the moment and make the most of it will bring out the ideal strength in you. You are the only one who cannot let yourself fall apart.

Long Speech on Health is Wealth

World health day.

On April 7, every year World Health Day is celebrated. It is an initiative taken by the WHO ( World Health Organization ) to raise awareness among people across the world. This day reminds people to take their health more seriously. The WHO organized local, regional and international events on this day. WHO helps in protecting health from the adverse effects of climate change, run campaigns to provide awareness among us.

Good Health

Good health doesn't only mean the absence of disease in the body but it is a complete mental, physical, spiritual as well as social well being of an individual.

It is always advisable to eat fresh food and fruits instead of junk or spicy food which are harmful to the body. Drinking sufficient amounts of water, intake of milk and seasonal food should be included in our food. Food in olden days was very naturally cultivated or grown but nowadays it is grown full of chemicals. This will harm our health.

Maintain a balanced diet daily. Using healthy oils, more veggies, intake of fruits and grains, and drinking sufficient amounts of water can be considered as a proper diet. Intake of food more than the body requires is also unhealthy .

Being physically active can improve your brain health, reduce the risk of disease, help to manage weight, strengthen bones and muscles and improve one's ability to do everyday activities. Most of the health issues which many one are facing today are due to the lack of physical work.

Health is wealth means that being healthy is more important than being wealthy. Wealth can be lost, but good health is priceless and cannot be bought with money. A person who is in good health is able to work efficiently and enjoy life to the fullest. On the other hand, a person who is constantly battling illness will find it difficult to lead a normal life, regardless of how much wealth they may have.

For example, consider a wealthy business person who falls ill and is unable to work for an extended period of time. Despite their wealth, they will not be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor and may even face financial difficulties due to the costs of medical treatment. In this situation, good health would have been a much more valuable asset than wealth.

Therefore, it is important to prioritise one's health and take steps to maintain it, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. By doing so, a person can enjoy both good health and wealth, and live a fulfilling life.

In conclusion, the phrase "health is wealth" emphasizes the importance of good health in our lives. It highlights the fact that even the most wealthy individuals can become impoverished by poor health, while good health allows us to enjoy all aspects of life, regardless of wealth. Taking care of one's health should be a top priority, and this means making lifestyle choices that promote physical and mental well-being.

Essay on Health is Wealth: The saying “health is wealth” rings true for each individual. Material possessions lose their lustre when you are unwell. Good health allows you to experience life fully, with energy for work, relationships, and enjoyment. While money can buy medical care, it cannot buy true health. By prioritising healthy habits like balanced meals and exercise, you invest in your greatest asset – your well-being.

Health is beyond any doubt, one of the most valuable assets one can possess. In a world where material wealth and outside success matter, the phrase “health is wealth” holds a timeless significance. Apart from this, this phrase also reminds us that having good health is the foundation on which a fulfilling life is built.

Speaking of the advantages of having good health, it allows us to enjoy life to the fullest. Without having a healthy mind and body the whole process becomes elusive.

Moreover, success and productivity depend on being in excellent health. It enables people to achieve their goals, work productively, and give back to society. An unwell person frequently encounters obstacles that prevent them from realising their hopes and dreams.

Keeping one’s health is also an investment in the future. Regular exercise and a healthy diet are two preventative healthcare practices that can assist in avoiding the need for future, expensive medical treatments. It is important to take a responsible approach to protecting one’s general well-being as well as one’s financial wealth.

Finally,” health is wealth” emphasises the importance of well-being in our lives. It reminds us that the priceless gift of health cannot be replaced by any amount of material prosperity. One must put their health first and treasure it beyond everything else if one wants to live a truly wealthy and fulfilling life.

Health is riches, after all. This proverb, which emphasises the critical necessity of health in one’s life, is full of timeless wisdom. It is simple to ignore the priceless gem that good health represents in a world that is focused on material prosperity and material interests.

First and foremost, being healthy helps people to live happy and fruitful lives. It serves as the cornerstone on which all other accomplishments are constructed. When someone is in good health, they have the vigour, strength, and stamina to achieve their aspirations, objectives, and ambitions. Poor health, on the other hand, can be a formidable obstacle that restricts one’s potential and prospects.

Additionally, having good health results in a higher quality of life. Healthy people require fewer medical procedures and are less in pain and suffering. They can enjoy life’s simple pleasures like spending time with loved ones, going outside, and eating good food without worrying about their diet.

The state of one’s health is crucial to their mental well-being. Mental health and physical well-being are tightly related. An emotionally stable and resilient state of mind is frequently a byproduct of physical health. The importance of health in one’s entire well-being is further highlighted by the fact that poor health can result in stress, worry, and depression.

The economic effects of health are another important factor. People who are in good health tend to be more productive at work, which increases earnings and improves financial security. On the other hand, health issues can cause medical expenses and decreased earning potential, which can have a considerable influence on one’s financial security.

The term “health is wealth” embodies a profound truth, to sum it up. The most valuable asset a person can have is good health because it supports all other facets of life. It enables people to live fulfilling lives, pursue their aspirations, and maintain their mental and emotional health. As a result, we must give our health priority and make the necessary investments because it is the only type of wealth that will never be exceeded or replaced by worldly belongings.

Essay on Health is Wealth in 400 Words

The proverb “Health is Wealth” maintains a special place in our lives. It emphasises how important good health is as the cornerstone of a successful and joyful life. The genuine meaning of riches is frequently missed in today’s fast-paced society when success is frequently gauged in monetary terms. This essay explores the deep significance of this adage and shows how true it is that the best asset anyone can have is their health.

Here are all the benefits one gets:

Being physically healthy is the same as being in good health. Our bodies perform at their peak when we are healthy, enabling us to go about our daily lives with vigour and enthusiasm. A productive existence is built on a foundation of physical fitness. It makes it possible for us to work effectively, pursue our objectives, and fully appreciate life. Even the most plentiful wealth becomes meaningless in the absence of health.

In addition to physical health, mental health is a critical element of our entire prosperity. Ageless wisdom is having a good mind and a healthy body. Our cognitive functioning, emotional stability, and resiliency in the face of difficulties are all influenced by our mental health. Material prosperity can become a cause of stress and unhappiness in the absence of mental wellness.

Economic success is directly correlated with good health. People may actively participate in the workforce and make more money when they are healthy. Healthier populations are also less financially burdened by healthcare expenses, releasing funds for other basic requirements. As a result, investing in healthcare is an investment in the prosperity of a country.

The genuine wealth of life is found in its excellence. A person in good health can enjoy life’s joys, go on trips, engage in hobbies, and spend time with loved ones. No amount of money can replace the richness that these experiences bring to life. Healthy people are better able to live fulfilling and pleasurable lives.

To conclude, the motto “Health is Wealth” perfectly describes what a prosperous life entails. While having material possessions is necessary for comfort and security, how we use and enjoy our wealth is ultimately influenced by our health. Given that health is the foundation upon which all other types of wealth are formed, investing in it should be a top priority. One must understand that health is the ultimate treasure that neither money nor anything else can ever fully replace or imitate to truly understand its worth. Therefore, let us never lose sight of the fact that our health is the most priceless asset we have when pursuing success and happiness.

Health is Wealth Speech for Students

Many of you have been made familiar with the phrase ‘Health Is Wealth’ in your school. Just like the phrase reads, the health of an individual plays an important role in our lives and is no less valuable than wealth. It is our sole responsibility to take proper care of our health and maintain a proper lifestyle to keep it healthy. By the term ‘Health’ , we not only define our physical health but also equally prioritize our mental health.

Thus, we have provided a long and short speech on health and fitness as a reference for the students. Speech on the importance of health is an important topic that must be introduced to all the students to help them be familiar with their mental as well as physical health. These speeches are provided for students of all categories along with a short 2 minute speech on health for the students of Class 1 and Class 2.

Long Speech on Health and Fitness in English

Given below is a long 500 words speech on health and fitness for the students of Class 7 to Class 12. This speech on the importance of health and fitness can be referred to by the students to prepare for their examination.

Greetings everyone! Today I have been provided with an opportunity to deliver a speech on fitness and how our health plays a major role in maintaining our mental as well as physical fitness. Since we are in a generation where everything around us is so technologically advanced and fast, we often get too dependent on machines and technology. Due to our fast-paced and busy schedule, we give less importance to physical fitness and mental health. As a result, all we have become is physically inactive and lazy. But with this are we all heading towards a healthy lifestyle? Sadly, the answer is no. Gone are the days where we used to walk to the nearest stores and take the stairs of our buildings. Also, we are more addicted to eating junk foods and ordering food from outside. Therefore, this has given rise to several diseases starting from cardiovascular diseases, obesity, depression and anxiety.

Although there have been several medical technologies and treatments that can get you out of it, all it takes to stop this thing is self-control and a healthy lifestyle. As the saying goes, ‘Health is Wealth’, an individual can only enjoy all the valuables of life if he/she/they is both physically and mentally healthy. The health of an individual plays a major role in his/her/their life and must be taken care of. In spite of our busy schedules, it is our responsibility to prioritize our health and involve ourselves in some kind of physical activity. Physical exercises need not be always strenuous, it can also be done in the form of walking, cycling, yoga and meditation that brings calmness to both mind and body.

But, is doing physical activity enough to stay healthy? Well, no. Most of the role to keep us healthy is played by the food we intake. It will be of no use if we intake junk and unhealthy food, rich in sugar and cholesterol levels and try to be healthy. Apart from exercising, it is equally important to drink plenty of water to keep ourselves hydrated. The level of fitness totally depends on the amount of activity our body can perform and the food we consume. Thus, inculcating a habit of eating healthy foods such as fruits, green vegetables and essential vitamins is really important.

I hope this health is wealth speech was really helpful in motivating you all to stay physically and mentally healthy. So, it’s high time that we really put our health over everything and take proper care of it. Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for being here today and listening to my speech.

Short Speech on Health and Hygiene

A short speech on health and hygiene is given below as a reference for the students of Class 3 to Class 6. This health y speech in English is given in a simple language to help them understand the topic better and prepare them for any speech competition or exam.

A very warm welcome to everyone present here. Today, I am going to deliver a speech on health and hygiene. These two are strongly associated with each other because it is very important to maintain a hygienic environment to stay healthy. This can be done by maintaining cleanliness and incorporating the habit of hygiene in our lives.

Living an unhygienic lifestyle can lead to several skin diseases and infections. The health of a person determines how much a person is physically fit and active. When it comes to taking care of health, several factors come into play which includes eating healthy food, doing regular exercises, having a proper sleep cycle and maintaining oral hygiene. We have been taught since our childhood to brush our teeth twice a day and avoid eating sugary foods to prevent bad breath and cavity. But many of us often forget to inculcate these healthy habits in our daily life. Our daily schedule has become so busy that we often end up ignoring our health, which in the long term, affects our body.

We can start leading a healthy life by taking small steps towards it such as switching from junk foods to fruits and vegetables, drinking plenty of water and walking every day for at least an hour. This, as a result, will help us concentrate well on our work and lead a life full of fitness.

10 Lines on Health

Here is a short 1 minute speech on health that is provided for the students of Class 1 and Class 2. They can take this speech as a reference for any examination or speech preparation.

Good morning to all of you present here. I am here to deliver a speech on health.

Our health is very important for us and helps us remain fit.

We should take proper care of our health in order to live a healthy life.

  • Try including some physical exercises/yoga in your routine. They not only prove to be beneficial for the body but also for the mind. For the past two years, offices, as well as schools and colleges, have been functioning online. As a result, many students and young people have developed backaches and posture problems. Adding at least half an hour of yoga/exercise to your daily routine will help you overcome these problems.
  • In today’s world, everybody is engrossed in their mobiles or laptops, and there’s very little time they spend without it. Sometimes, it is necessary to take a break from all these electronic and smart devices. This will help us maintain proper physical and mental health.
  • A good night’s sleep is an easy and effortless way to maintain your health. Your body works to repair all the cells and make sure that your body functions properly the next day in the time that you rest. A minimum of 8 hours of sleep is necessary for any adult being.
  • Try to avoid processed or fried foods and make sure that your plates include enough vegetables and fruits. A healthy platter does wonders for one’s health.
  • If you are feeling disturbed or upset about something, talk to your near and dear ones; you can also consult a specialist if you need. Just like physical health, mental health is also something that is to be considered important. When we fall ill, we have medicines; similarly, if someone is feeling mentally unwell, they should consult a specialist.

With the COVID19 pandemic going on for the past two years, one should take the following precautions to avoid getting affected by the virus. Here are some simple steps one can follow:

  • Always put on a mask whenever you step out of your houses. This is applicable to people of all ages.
  • Everyone should avoid going to crowded places as there is a high risk of getting affected.
  • If you feel you are affected by the virus, seclude yourself from the rest of your family members and keep in touch with your doctors so that everything is monitored and you stay out of danger.
  • Try to eat healthy food and fruits that’ll help you develop immunity.

Wealth, Health, and Longevity: Exploring the Connection

speech on health and wealth

Benjamin Franklin's adage linking health and wealth has persisted through time, suggesting that financial security correlates with better health and increased lifespan. A recent study delves into this relationship, specifically exploring the impact of wealth inequality on longevity in the U.S. and considering potential increases in lifespan associated with reduced wealth inequality.

speech on health and wealth

Wealth Inequality

Before jumping into the study's findings, it's essential to grasp the context of wealth in the United States. The country exhibits high and escalating levels of wealth inequality, with the wealthiest 10% holding a staggering 70.7% of total wealth. [1] This stark contrast is uncommon among high-income nations, with racial wealth disparities also prominently present. White households, for instance, possess nearly six times the wealth of Latino households and seven times that of Black households.

Distinguishing Wealth from Income

It's crucial to differentiate between wealth and income when assessing an individual's financial situation. Income refers to the regular money flow into a person's or family's budget, while wealth encapsulates accumulated assets and resources, including tangible items like real estate and vehicles. The study emphasizes that wealth may more meaningfully capture socioeconomic position than income, considering its stability over time and its influence on access to essential resources such as housing and education.

Wealth is more reflective of caste, a social stratification that traditionally divides society into distinct groups, often based on factors such as occupation, birth, and heredity. We will return to wealth as caste in a moment.

The study utilized data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a longitudinal panel study of US adults aged 50 or older that collects detailed but estimated data on household wealth [2]. The sample, consisting of 35,164 participants, was divided into wealth deciles ranging from the lowest to the highest. The researchers calculated survival rates for each decile and applied various wealth distribution models to explore potential changes in longevity.

The four wealth distribution models included:

  • Equalizing wealth in the US to a specific amount, $281,767, the seventh decile of wealth. [3]
  • Adopting a wealth distribution similar to Japan, a country with the lowest wealth inequality of high-income countries.
  • Implementing a minimum inheritance policy, where each adult receives an inheritance equal to 60% of the national per-person wealth,$169,060. [4]
  • Introducing a baby bonds proposal involving a $1,000 deposit for newborns, with additional deposits based on household income to poverty ratio. [5]

Results and Implications

Adjustments in the HRS data were made for age, self-reported sex, race and ethnicity, marital status, and household size. As expected, based on many studies of demographics and health, a lower hazard of death was identified for female sex, being married (or partnered), and greater wealth – the gap from lowest to highest deciles 13.5 years.

Latin participants had a lower hazard of death relative to White participants in all models, and greater income and education levels were associated with a lower hazard of death. Black participants had a greater hazard of death when adjusted for education or income alone but not in models adjusted for wealth. Both findings speak against the idea that race or ethnicity, on its own, is the determinant of health; it is entangled with wealth – it is a matter of caste, and caste is racially diverse.

“Simulations of more equitable wealth distributions were associated with large increases in longevity for the entire population, ranging from 1.0 to 2.2 years, a 4% to 10% increase … equivalent in magnitude to the population-wide gains in life expectancy between 2005 and 2015 or to the losses in life expectancy during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The analysis revealed that simulations of more equitable wealth distributions were associated with significant increases in longevity, ranging from 1.0 to 2.2 years. Perfect wealth equity, “unlikely to be politically achievable,” produced the most significant longevity increase of 2.2 years. This was followed by wealth equality modeling in Japan, 1.7 years, a minimum inheritance policy, 1.6 years, and the baby bonds proposal, 1 year.

Connecting Wealth to Health – is Caste a better description?

“…our analysis suggests that wealth may mediate a large share of survival gaps between Black and White individuals, as Black study participants did not have a greater hazard of death in models adjusting for wealth. These findings suggest that Black households might experience particularly large health benefits from society wide wealth redistribution.” [emphasis added]

However, does wealth mediate that difference or capture many responsible underlying factors?

Notably, the study emphasizes the potential health benefits of societal wealth redistribution, particularly for Black households. I believe this conflates mediation with representation.

The study posited several mechanisms through which wealth could improve health, including facilitating residence in well-funded neighborhoods, providing access to quality education and healthcare, and increasing leisure time for health-promoting activities.

I would argue that wealth stands in for all those mechanisms, so simply equalizing wealth does not result in equalized housing, education, and lifestyle. More importantly, while there were disparities in the racial makeup of the lowest wealth group, there was no evidence that being White and poor was any less a determinant of poor health than being black or brown and poor. Caste is a better descriptor if for no other reason than it removes the divisive use of race from the discussion, allowing us to stop acting based on “the color of their skin” and more on fundamental determinants of our lives, our homes, neighborhoods, education, and food.

Improving longevity is not a matter of transferring wealth or paying reparations.

Wealth redistribution is not a panacea. It requires, as the commentary on this study notes,

“Complementary public policy changes in other sectors, such as housing, education, the environment, and the criminal justice system…”

that will address the broader determinants of health and enhance the well-being of all individuals.

[1] The top 1% of US households own 42.5% of total wealth vs. 27.8% in the Netherlands, the second most unequal OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) country.

[2] Assets queried included primary and secondary residences; other real estate; vehicles; businesses; stocks; mutual funds; investment trusts; checking, savings, money market, individual retirement, and Keogh accounts; certificates of deposit; government savings bonds; Treasury bills; bonds; bond funds; and other savings. Debts included mortgages and land contracts on residences, home loans, and other debt (e.g., credit card balances and medical debt).

[3] The value of $281,767 was based on Federal Reserve and Census Bureau estimates of mean household net worth and household size.

[4] The researchers “assigned a minimum wealth of $169,060 (60% of $281,767) to each individual in the sample without changing the wealth of any individual whose actual wealth was greater than $ 169,060.”

[5] This reflects actual legislation proposed by US Representative Ayanna Pressley and Senator Cory Booker.

Health and Wealth: The Importance for Lifestyle Medicine

Many people spend years dreaming about their retirement. Unfortunately, today’s workers will likely work longer, suffer greater economic uncertainty, and might have poorer health status compared with retirees in previous generations. Preserving good health during the working years is associated with a more consistent employment record, greater financial resources, and reduced risk of disease. Making smart financial decisions as a younger adult also translates to improved finances in retirement. While many people are aware of these relationships, many continue to make poor health choices. Employers and lifestyle medicine professionals can both work to improve financial well-being in retirement. Employers can offer effective worksite financial wellness programs and promote participation in retirement savings programs. Physicians and other health providers can foster healthy behaviors, encourage preventive services compliance, and help adults foster overall financial and health well-being. Adopting a healthy lifestyle as early as possible would increase the likelihood that today’s workers will enjoy financial security in retirement.

When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and reason is powerless. —Herophilus, ancient Greek physician
. . . about one-half of retirees have no retirement savings, and the median savings for near-retirees (age 55-64 years) is only about $12 000.

Introduction: Changes in Retirement

Advances in medicine, technology, and well-being have resulted in greater longevity in the United States and therefore the need to plan for a retirement that could be many years longer than seen in previous generations. 1 According to SoFi.com , the average American retires at age 64. 2 Since today’s average life expectancy is 79 years, 3 most people will spend about 15 years in retirement. While Social Security data show that most Americans claim retiree benefits as soon as they are eligible, 4 current workers in the Baby Boom generation expect to work longer than earlier cohorts of workers. 5

Unfortunately, about one-half of retirees have no retirement savings, and the median savings for near-retirees (age 55-64 years) is only about $12 000. As of 2017, half of private sector employees had access to employer-based retirement benefits—either defined benefit pension-style plans or defined contribution 401(k) types of plans—which has been at a consistent rate since 1979. 6 However, only 52% of households with a head of household or spouse age 25 to 64 years old participate in an employer-based retirement plan when one is available to them. 7 Ethnic and racial wealth disparities were exacerbated in the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009, 8 and the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the highest level of unemployment in the United States since data collection began in 1948. 9

The prevalence of having multiple (2 or more) chronic conditions from the 2018 National Health Interview Survey for US adults with private health insurance coverage was 15.7% for 18- to 64-year-olds, while the prevalence for those individuals age 65 and older was 63.2%. The chronic diseases included in that survey were arthritis, cancer, chronic obstructive disease, coronary heart disease, asthma, diabetes, hepatitis, hypertension, stroke, and weak or failing kidneys. 10

At this time, approximately 10 000 baby boomers turn age 65 each day, with that trend expected to continue for many years. 11 Whether or not a person has enough savings is a key factor in the decision to retire. 12 Another major factor is whether or not a person is healthy enough to continue working if they do not have enough savings to retire. To shed light on that topic, the purpose of this review is to identify the relationship between health and finances in employed adults nearing retirement age.

Employee Health and Wealth

Employers have long supported worksite wellness programs to promote employee health. Goals typically include managing health care costs, disability, and worker productivity. Although there are altruistic motives for instituting these programs, a chief goal has often been health care cost control. 13 These wellness programs have resulted in healthier employees who may or may not live longer, but who likely will have more productive years of life. 14 - 17 Numerous studies have established the link between health risks measured by a health risk appraisal and economic outcome measurements such as health care costs, pharmacy costs, and productivity costs. 18 - 22 Similarly, research has documented the links between multiple health indicators and employee income over time. 23

Employees who participate in employer-based wellness programs are likely to be healthier in their retirement years and therefore will need additional retirement savings to continue their active lifestyle. In contrast, employees who have medical conditions or health risk factors placing them at increased risk of disease in retirement will likely need additional retirement benefits to cover their medical expenditures. A Kaiser Foundation study found that in 2012 an estimated 1 in 3 Americans had difficulty paying their medical bills within the past year. They were paying previous bills over time or were unable to pay their medical bills at all. 24 A majority of these people who had trouble paying medical bills had health insurance but had out-of-pocket expenses for health care not covered by their insurance or cost-sharing expenses for insurance deductibles and co-payments. For all people, financial resources are critical to the quality of the retirement years.

A review of the literature found very little published research on the association between health and retirement saving contributions. Gubler and Pierce reported on 401(k) contributions by 414 employees working in 8 multistate laundry locations. They found that the decision to contribute to a 401(k) retirement plan predicted whether an employee who had a basic health risk appraisal and 42 blood screening tests acted to correct their poor physical health risks in the following year. 25 In that study, participants received a financial incentive of an approximately 15% decrease in their health insurance premiums depending on their base salary ($1.75 to $11 per month) to complete a health risk appraisal. Furthermore, they found that employees who contributed to their 401(k) were 27% more likely to show improvements in their health risks and biometric abnormalities than noncontributors in the following year. A total of 208 out of 213 (98%) of these employees with 2 screenings in 2010 and 2012 had at least one abnormality and 53/213 (25%) had at least one “severely abnormal” finding. The only intervention for the abnormalities was referring the employee to their doctor for follow-up, which points to the importance of a strong ongoing relationship between aging workers and their primary care physician.

Brown et al found that households approaching retirement in recent years held significantly more debt than households nearing retirement in the previous decades. 26 This result was also found by Lusardi et al, who analyzed data from the long-term Health and Retirement Study as well as the National Financial Capability Study. They concluded that people approaching retirement now hold more debt and suffered more financial insecurity than past generations. 27 A 2016 study found that the health of Americans aged 50 to 70 had not improved over the past 2 decades, 28 with other studies showing that the health of adults in that age category may have actually worsened during that time period. 29 , 30

Changes in Social Security over the past 50 years have increased the “normal” retirement age. 31 , 32 Therefore, upcoming retirees will retire and claim benefits at a later age than previous cohorts, despite the fact that their health is worse according to several measures. The consequences of this combination of factors may lead to other outcomes such as an increase in people applying for Social Security disability benefits, or an increase in health care costs for employers whose employees are working until later ages. 33

It is known that postretirement medical expenditures are related to health. A Medicare population was asked to respond to the following question: “In general, compared to other people your age, would you say your health is: excellent, very good, good, fair or poor?” Responses were the following: 18% as excellent, 26% as very good, 30% as good, 17% as fair, and 7% as poor. Medicare expenditures had a marked inverse relationship to self-assessed health ratings. In the year after assessment, age- and gender-adjusted annual expenditures varied 5-fold, from $8743 for beneficiaries rating their health as poor to $1656 for beneficiaries rating their health as excellent. Hospitalization rates followed the same pattern: respondents who rated their health as poor had 675 hospitalizations per 1000 beneficiaries per year compared with 135 per 1000 for those rating their health as excellent. 34

Health and wealth are both important resources for living a happy and successful life. People in poor health often die young and spend thousands of dollars for medical care that could have been invested for retirement. On the other hand, those who practice recommended health behaviors are more likely to exceed average life expectancy and need a larger nest egg to ensure that they do not outlive their assets. Health and personal finances are both closely associated with happiness. Research suggests that 4 factors strongly predict happiness and well-being in most cultures: health, financial stability, work, and other productive pursuits, and family and friend relationships. 35 - 37 This concept was reiterated in a 2017 study of retirees and the changing nature of retirement with many individuals choosing or having to work after the traditional retirement age. The most influential resources related to retirement outcomes in that study were financial resources, health, and, in some cases, social networks. 38 Studies indicate that people are happier when they are healthy, employed, or doing something productive; have strong social relationships; and are financially secure. Costly health incidents can deplete a household’s savings, leaving them vulnerable. 39 Happiness has been associated with longevity. 40 For example, very happy people have a 6% lower risk of death over a given follow-up time period than people who are pretty happy, and 14% lower risk of death than those who are not happy.

There is abundant literature reporting that a reduction in health risk factors is associated with less short-term disability, absenteeism, improvement in on-the-job productivity (“presenteeism”), and lower health care cost expenditures. 41 - 43 Of equal importance is whether changing health risk factors in older adults results in changes in these metrics. The percentage of people in the United States who work and people who want to work has increased markedly in both the 65 and older and 75 and older age groups according to the American Association of Retired Persons Public Policy Institute. 44 The workforce participation rate for 65 to 74 was 17.5% in 1996 compared with 26.8% in 2016. For 75 and older, the rate jumped from 4.7% in 1996 to 8.4% in 2016. 45 An April 2013 Gallup survey had similar findings. A total of 1005 nonretired, working people were asked when they reached retirement age “will you continue working and work full-time; continue working part-time; or stop working altogether?” 46

  • 15% said they would work full-time, and 40% of those said it was because they wanted to, not because they must.
  • 61% said they would work part-time; almost 55% of those said they would do it because they wanted to.
  • 22% said they would retire and stop working altogether.

The current average retirement age for men and women is 64 and 62, respectively, while current workers report they anticipate retiring at age 67. 47

What Can Employers Do?

The need for health care benefits is one of the factors that workers between the ages of 50 and 65 have cited most frequently when asked to identify major reasons to work in retirement. 48 This suggests that access to employer-sponsored health insurance benefits may be used by organizations to retain skilled and experienced workers. To address this employee need, some employers may offer health insurance to employees who work part-time. Employers that can provide these options to employees with increased longevity will be addressing an essential need of the skilled worker in the coming years.

We believe that incorporating health metrics into retirement planning earlier in life might have a favorable impact on employee retirement saving contributions. 49 In economics, the concept of time preference is the current relative value placed on some item today compared to receiving it at a later date. That is the trade-off that employees need to consider when choosing to save for retirement as well as make healthy choices today. Researchers attempt to capture this difference in today versus later value as “time discounting” because individuals choose to forego future wealth or health in favor of immediate consumption or suboptimal choices. 50 There are benefits to employers as well. According to Towers Watson’s 2012-2013 Global Workforce Study, “Employers that successfully invest in supporting both employee health and employee confidence in their financial well-being drive a surprising high return on investment for all stakeholders.” 51

Some employers may choose to implement flexible or phased retirement policies, which allow aging workers to transition to part-time work or shared jobs as they approach retirement. In a simulation study, a model was created in which workers knew about their future health condition (based on personal, family history, and community risks) when they were young, and adjusted their savings accordingly to improve their future financial situation. The simulation allowed for flexible or phased retirement that helped minimize the need for welfare programs for the future retirees. 52 A 2017 analysis of the Health and Retirement Study data found that more than half of older Americans were utilizing some combination of 3 strategies for their retirement including changing employers later in life, reentering the labor force after an initial retirement, or reducing their hours in career employment after traditional retirement age. 53 The authors noted that this flexibility is beneficial to many workers but that it also reflects the hardship endured by some retirees in poor health or with insufficient financial resources.

Employers who contribute to the health care costs of their retirees may also consider offering a health promotion program for that population. In 1992, Bank of America randomized 5686 of its retirees into a full health promotion program, questionnaire-only, or control groups to determine if the program had any impact on health habits, risks, or utilization. 54 After 1 year of follow-up health risk scores and health care costs decreased significantly in the program group compared with the other 2 groups. There are also altruistic reasons for providing a wellness program to employees who retire, which may attract motivated workers to companies. Similarly, General Motors also offered a wellness program to its retirees in 1996 in an effort to improve health status and contain health care costs in that population. 55

The Health and Retirement Survey data show that financial literacy is common among retired individuals, who often rely on professional financial planners, retirement seminars, and financial calculators. However, results show that younger adults are not as well informed. 56 It is not clear why so many people fail to plan for retirement at a young age but some of the suggested reasons include low salaries, and burdensome student loan debt, no access to an employer-sponsored retirement savings program, parenthood, and homeownership financial strain. Employers can improve the situation by sponsoring workplace seminars on retirement planning and encouraging participation in 401(k) plans with matches or other strategies. Incorporating health metrics into retirement planning sessions earlier in life may have a favorable impact on employee retirement savings contributions as well. 57

What Can Lifestyle Medicine Practitioners Do?

A study in the United Kingdom attempted to identify common health problems that forced older workers into retirement due to poor health. The study found that older workers who reported depressive symptoms or impaired physical mobility were at increased risk of making an early transition out of work. 58 Lifestyle medicine practitioners targeting these conditions may enable older workers to remain in the workforce until they have reached full retirement age. Encouraging healthy lifestyle behaviors is another way lifestyle medicine physicians can improve older adults’ lives. A UK study of older adults found that physical activity tends to decrease around age 55, which has a detrimental impact on health and well-being in retirement. 59 Activity with a social component may be the key to keeping that age group active.

Encouraging positive behaviors after retirement is another important way for lifestyle medicine to impact this population. A large population-based cohort study in Australia found that retirement was associated with positive lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, increases in physical activity, reductions in time spent sitting, and improved sleep. 60 A large corporation using a population-based study in the United States offered wellness programs to all active and retired employees in one area of the country. Participation rates were monitored anonymously over 4 years. It was found that retirees who participated in the wellness program activities during their employment also had higher participation rates as retirees. 61 Health professionals may wish to capitalize on this time of major transition to focus on healthy choices and behaviors.

Conclusions

Retirement is something that most people spend a significant amount of time thinking about. Unfortunately, the reality of retirement may not match each person’s dreams. The research summarized in this article reveals that today’s workers will have to work longer, have more economic uncertainty, and have poorer health measures compared with retirees of previous generations. Maintaining good health during the adult years is associated with a more stable employment history, more financial reserves, and reduced risk of disease. Making wise financial decisions as a younger adult also translates to improved finances in the retirement years. Even though most people are aware of these relationships, many people still choose to make poor health choices such as smoking, living a sedentary lifestyle, and eating a poor diet, as well as less than ideal financial choices such as incurring large amounts of debt, outspending their income, and not saving for retirement. Employers and lifestyle medicine professionals can both contribute to improvements in this situation. Employers can encourage participation in worksite wellness programs and participation in 401(k) savings programs. Physicians and other health providers can foster healthy behaviors, preventive service compliance, and community support for individuals. Implementing those changes as early as possible would increase the likelihood of adults being able to enjoy a long and healthy retirement.

In this article, I’m going to write health is wealth speech for different duration of time so that you can prepare the most suitable one for you.

Actually, I have written this speech for 1, 2, and 3 minutes. Now, it’s only up to you which one you choose.

All these speeches can be given anywhere whether it’s a school or a public place. It seemed a very important topic, that’s why I decided to write an article on it.

So, without any delay, let’s start writing the speech.

Health is Wealth Speech in English for 1, 2 & 3 Minutes –

1. health is wealth speech for 1 minute –.

Hello everyone, my name is Sachin Kulkarni and today, I’m going to give a speech on health is wealth. Please forgive me if I make any mistakes.

Good health is one of the most valuable assets for human beings in life. If someone’s health is not good, he can neither live his life comfortably nor can enjoy the moments of life like others.

Health is something that can be cured with money, but can’t be bought. That means no matter how rich we are, we can’t buy good health.

Everyone wants good health but no one follows things that are responsible for good health. To be healthy, we should meditate, do physical work, eat healthy food, etc. But, people don’t pay attention to them.

We can live life without money but not without good health. So, we should pay special attention to our health because only good health can take us towards the peak.

If we really want to live a healthy life, we have to wake up early in the morning and do physical and mental exercises for a definite interval of time, as well as we have to consume hymns that keep our health good.

At last, I’ll request to everybody to maintain his health for the enjoyment of life.

Also, see the speech on knowledge is power for 2 minutes .

2. Health is Wealth Speech for 2 Minutes –

First of all, my greetings to everyone who is listening to me here. My name is Subodh Bharti and I study in class 8th. Today, I got an opportunity to express my thoughts about health is wealth. So, if I made any mistake, please give me pardon.

As you all know that progress in any field is possible only when we have good health. In other words, success can’t be achieved without good health. Nevertheless, people don’t focus on their health.

We all are so busy shaping our future that we have forgotten to care about our health, whereas only good health can take us towards a good future. We don’t want to do any physical or mental work. As a result, we have become very lazy.

In the earlier decades, when there was no technology, we were not dependent on any machine or equipment, but increasing technology has made us dependent.

Today, we are completely dependent on machines. We don’t require much physical activity while doing any work, due to which we’re getting surrounded by various types of diseases. To become healthy, it’s essential to be mentally, intellectually, physically active and eat food that can strengthen us in every way.

In the true sense, our good health is the only wealth. if we are healthy, we can be happy and enjoy our life with no stress. If we are unwell, no matter how much money we have, it cannot give us happiness.

So, always try to stay fit so that you don’t have any stress or disease.

3. Health is Wealth Speech for 3 Minutes –

Good morning to all the respected teachers and students, today, I’m going to give a speech on health is wealth, please forgive me if I make any mistakes unknowingly.

Health is wealth, in this proverb health is compared to wealth. No matter how much money we have, if we are physically unwell, no one is poorer than us.

It’s also believed that whether we are rich or poor, diseases don’t come after seeing our prosperity and poverty, but it’s absolutely true that they capture those who remain physically or mentally inactive.

In today’s era, we are chasing our work so fast that we don’t worry about our health.

There is no doubt that working is necessary for our livelihood, but we should also take care of our health. Only a healthy body motivates us to do work and if we are unhealthy, we cannot do anything efficiently.

Due to our body being unhealthy, neither we feel energetic nor are we motivated to do any work. That’s why it is always said that health is the first wealth.

To stay away from diseases, we should exercise regularly and do it on a daily basis. At the same time, we should take healthy food and be active in our work as much as possible because inactivity and laziness are such things that give a feast to diseases.

If possible, all parents should motivate their children to take yoga classes or regular exercise so that they can lead healthy and happy lives. Also, we have to make a habit of being happy by reducing anger. It has been known for centuries how beneficial laughter is for health.

A healthy and happy life will come only when we are physically and mentally fit otherwise we will spend our days in despair and passivity.

Now, I end my words and suggest you keep your body healthy.

Also, see the speech on child labour for 2 minutes .

Final words –

In the end, I hope that the article must have satisfied you and you have got here the best speeches on health is wealth.

Now, you can choose the best one which can attract more attention while delivering the speech. If you really liked this article, please share it with those who need it.

Speech on Health And Wellness

Health and wellness matter to everyone. It’s about feeling good, both physically and mentally.

You might be wondering, what exactly does it mean? Let’s explore this important aspect of our lives together.

1-minute Speech on Health And Wellness

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Health and wellness are like two friends who always go hand in hand. They are the most important gifts we have. They are like the fuel that keeps our body running, like petrol for a car. Without them, we can’t enjoy life to the fullest.

Think of your body as a beautiful garden. What happens if you don’t care for it? Weeds grow, plants wither, and it loses its beauty. The same thing happens to our bodies if we don’t take care of them. If we eat too much junk food, don’t exercise, or stay up late, our bodies can get sick.

So, how can we keep our bodies healthy and happy? It’s simple. We need to eat balanced meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables. We need to drink lots of water and get enough sleep. And we need to move our bodies. This could be playing a sport, dancing, walking, or even just playing with your friends.

But health and wellness are not just about our bodies. They’re also about our minds. Just like a garden needs sunshine, our minds need positive thoughts to grow. If we are happy, our bodies feel better too. So, it’s important to do things that make us happy, like spending time with loved ones, reading a good book, or playing a game.

Remember, health and wellness are a journey, not a destination. Every day is a new chance to make good choices for our bodies and minds. So, let’s pledge to take care of our health and wellness, for they are the real treasures of life.

2-minute Speech on Health And Wellness

Good day to everyone listening. Today, we are going to talk about something really important – health and wellness.

First, let’s understand what health and wellness mean. Health is not just about not being sick. It’s about feeling good in your body, being strong and active. Wellness means taking care of your whole self – your body, your mind, and your spirit.

Now, why is health and wellness important? Imagine a car. If you want it to run smoothly, you need to take care of it. You need to fill it with the right fuel, check the oil, and clean it. Our bodies are like cars. If we want to feel good and do all the things we love, we need to take care of them.

So, how can we take care of our health and wellness? One way is by eating right. Our bodies need different types of food to work well. Eating fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains gives our bodies the fuel they need. Try to eat less junk food like chips and candy. They might taste good, but they don’t help our bodies stay strong and healthy.

Another way to take care of our health is by staying active. This doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon or lift heavy weights. It can be as simple as playing a game of tag, dancing to your favorite song, or taking a walk with your family. Being active helps your body stay strong and can make you feel happier too.

But health and wellness isn’t just about our bodies. It’s also about our minds and spirits. One way to take care of your mind is to learn new things. This could be reading a book, learning a new hobby, or even solving a puzzle. It keeps your mind sharp and active.

Taking care of your spirit can mean different things to different people. It could be spending time with loved ones, being in nature, or doing something you love. It’s about finding what makes you happy and doing more of it.

Remember, health and wellness is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making small changes that can make a big difference. So, let’s start today. Let’s eat better, move more, learn new things, and do what makes us happy. Because health and wellness is not just about living longer, it’s about living better. Thank you.

Speech on Health and Fitness for Students and Children

Speech on health and fitness.

Hello everyone. I am here to present a speech on health and fitness. The very known two terms to us are the word ‘health’ and ‘fitness’. Many times we tell or use these words whenever we say phrases like ‘health is wealth’ and ‘fitness is the key’. What does the word health really mean? It implies the idea of ‘being well’. A healthy and fit person is the one when he/she can function well physically as well as mentally. Proper health and fitness do not depend on our own but also on our physical environment and the quality of food intake.

Health and fitness is the most important aspect of our life.  There is nothing more important than health for any human being.  When we are healthy and fit we are able to enjoy our life well. We can talk to our near and dear one, we can laugh, smile, travel, enjoy food, and sleep well.

But when our health and fitness is not up to the mark, we are unable to do anything properly and stay behind. We cannot enjoy eating, watching sports or movies.  Our mood always remains negative and we are unable to talk nicely with our near and dear or even sleep properly.

Our health and fitness are more valued than our wealth.  In fact, our elders were always been focused on the health and fitness part. They treasure it like wealth. To maintain good health and fitness at its best all the time, we need to take care of hygiene and sanitation around us.

We must eat a healthy and complete diet.  We must eat vegetables, milk, egg, etc. Everyone should make a diet chart and ensure that we take a sufficient amount of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins.  Apart from eating we must maintain cleanliness in our room, house and nearby surroundings.

Roots Affecting Health and Fitness

Well, there are many factors that are responsible for the staggering health and fitness graph. But the major reason is the personal habit and living style of people. A human body requires 20 gm fat per day. The consumption of just a regular pizza adds 10 grams of fat to the human body; a whopper burger blesses you with 13 gm fat and 100 gm French fries promote 15 gm fat to your body.

All the junk foods are destroying people’s health and fitness these days. Due to the fast-paced life, people are concerned about filling their stomachs rather than considering what they are eating and its effect on their health and body.

Health and Fitness tips

As we know that health and fitness play an important role in our overall wellbeing so we should try for a good balance between mind, body, and soul. I have some suggested activities to maintain proper health and fitness. One can start playing games and sports. An active body can metabolize well and so keep us in good shape.

Yoga has got a lot of health and fitness benefits such as flexibility, burn calories, increase blood flow, boosts immunity. Proper food selection leads to eating healthy. The intake of vitamins found in vegetables and fruits, proteins found in whole grains and lean meat keeps us healthy. Eat foods that have less oil are good to control cholesterol levels.

Avoid smoking and drinking as they affect our sleep which is important for the body to remain healthy and in good shape. Exercising improves the general health of the body. One must take at least thirty minutes a day to do some exercises or walk.

As told by Dalai Lama “Happiness is the highest form of health”. Happiness will come only when we will be healthy and fit. But today we live in a world where we value things more than people, work more than family, food more than health and status more than life.

We rush after money and social status and we forget about our health. What’s the value of life if we don’t live healthy and fit. This absurd attitude has ruined our lives and it will continue to do so unless we open up our eyes and see the reality.

Biden's State of the Union address, annotated and fact-checked

By Zachary B. Wolf and Sean O’Key, CNN

Published March 8, 2024

It may have been President Joe Biden’s final State of the Union address. Or possibly the last of his first term. As Biden and former President Donald Trump prepare for a 2024 general election rematch, a vigorous Biden went off script at times, directly addressing Republicans and making the case that his administration has improved the country and people’s lives.

Here’s what he said and key ad-libs, along with context and fact checks from CNN’s fact check team.

Good evening.

Mr. Speaker. Madam Vice President. Members of Congress. My Fellow Americans.

In January 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt came to this chamber to speak to the nation.

He said, “I address you at a moment unprecedented in the history of the Union."

Hitler was on the march. War was raging in Europe.

President Roosevelt’s purpose was to wake up the Congress and alert the American people that this was no ordinary moment.

Freedom and democracy were under assault in the world.

Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speech closed with a vision of spreading American democracy to the world. That’s a very Biden sentiment .

Tonight I come to the same chamber to address the nation.

Now it is we who face an unprecedented moment in the history of the Union.

And yes, my purpose tonight is to both wake up this Congress, and alert the American people that this is no ordinary moment either.

It’s notable that Biden was essentially comparing the threat against democracy today, both here and abroad, to the threat posed by Adolf Hitler in Germany in 1941.

Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault here at home as they are today.

What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack, both at home and overseas, at the very same time.

Biden’s challenge in this election is to make Americans believe his quest to save democracy is an urgent matter. The rise of Trump from the political desert suggests many Americans are tiring of the message.

Overseas, Putin of Russia is on the march, invading Ukraine and sowing chaos throughout Europe and beyond.

If anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine, I assure you, he will not.

But Ukraine can stop Putin if we stand with Ukraine and provide the weapons it needs to defend itself. That is all Ukraine is asking. They are not asking for American soldiers.

In fact, there are no American soldiers at war in Ukraine. And I am determined to keep it that way.

This was an important pledge for Americans to hear. French President Emmanuel Macron recently suggested European troops could be called to Ukraine .

But now assistance for Ukraine is being blocked by those who want us to walk away from our leadership in the world.

The Senate passed a bill to give Ukraine an additional $60 billion in US aid, but Speaker Mike Johnson, who sat over Biden’s left shoulder during the speech, has not schedule d a vote in the House .

It wasn’t that long ago when a Republican President, Ronald Reagan, thundered, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

Now, my predecessor, a former Republican President, tells Putin, “Do whatever the hell you want."

Reagan’s words were an important moment in US history. Watch it here. Trump, he who shall not be named in this speech, said recently that he told a European leader that Russia should be able to “ do whatever the hell they want ” to European countries that don’t spend enough on defense.

A former American President actually said that, bowing down to a Russian leader.

It’s outrageous. It’s dangerous. It’s unacceptable.

This “bowing down” line has become a staple of Biden’s speeches.

America is a founding member of NATO the military alliance of democratic nations created after World War II to prevent war and keep the peace.

Today, we’ve made NATO stronger than ever.

We welcomed Finland to the Alliance last year, and just this morning, Sweden officially joined NATO, and their Prime Minister is here tonight.

Mr. Prime Minister, welcome to NATO, the strongest military alliance the world has ever known.

Sweden was able to join NATO after Turkey and Hungary dropped objections. Coincidentally, Trump is set to meet with Hungary’s Putin-friendly prime minister, Viktor Orban, at Mar-a-Lago on Friday.

I say this to Congress: we must stand up to Putin. Send me the Bipartisan National Security Bill.

History is watching.

If the United States walks away now, it will put Ukraine at risk.

Europe at risk. The free world at risk, emboldening others who wish to do us harm.

My message to President Putin is simple.

We will not walk away. We will not bow down. I will not bow down.

History is watching, just like history watched three years ago on January 6th.

This was an important turn, from standing up to Putin to the threat of insurrectionists at home. Trump’s affinity for Putin is no secret. Trump argues he would be able to contain Putin better than Biden.

Insurrectionists stormed this very Capitol and placed a dagger at the throat of American democracy.

Many of you were here on that darkest of days.

We all saw with our own eyes these insurrectionists were not patriots.

They had come to stop the peaceful transfer of power and to overturn the will of the people.

Everyone saw it, but many Republican lawmakers now downplay the threat posed by the January 6, 2021, insurrection. Johnson was among the lawmakers who objected to the counting of electoral votes in key states Biden won in 2020.

January 6th and the lies about the 2020 election, and the plots to steal the election, posed the gravest threat to our democracy since the Civil War.

But they failed. America stood strong and democracy prevailed.

But we must be honest the threat remains and democracy must be defended.

My predecessor and some of you here seek to bury the truth of January 6th.

I will not do that.

A lot of Americans might want to move on from 2020, but Biden will try to remind them at every turn. He’ll get help from Trump, who is also still very focused on 2020. Trump has fashioned his campaign as a weapon of “retribution.”

This is a moment to speak the truth and bury the lies.

And here’s the simplest truth. You can’t love your country only when you win.

As I’ve done ever since being elected to office, I ask you all, without regard to party, to join together and defend our democracy!

Remember your oath of office to defend against all threats foreign and domestic.

Respect free and fair elections! Restore trust in our institutions! And make clear –political violence has absolutely no place in America!

Biden frequently uses this line about having to love your country when you lose too. The erosion of faith in US institutions is a troubling development reflected in multiple polls .

And history is watching another assault on freedom.

Joining us tonight is Latorya Beasley, a social worker from Birmingham, Alabama . 14 months ago tonight, she and her husband welcomed a baby girl thanks to the miracle of IVF.

She scheduled treatments to have a second child, but t he Alabama Supreme Court shut down IVF treatments across the state , unleashed by the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

She was told her dream would have to wait.

Here’s a list of all of the people who sat with first lady Jill Biden.

Notably, some Alabama clinics have resumed treatment under a bipartisan law hastily passed in that state. But Democrats will continue to make this argument about abortion restrictions being an assault on freedom.

What her family has gone through should never have happened. And unless Congress acts, it could happen again.

So tonight, let’s stand up for families like hers!

To my friends across the aisle, don’t keep families waiting any longer. Guarantee the right to IVF nationwide!

This will be an interesting request to monitor, since it could theoretically gain bipartisan support.

Like most Americans, I believe Roe v. Wade got it right. And I thank Vice President Harris for being an incredible leader, defending reproductive freedom and so much more.

But my predecessor came to office determined to see Roe v. Wade overturned.

He’s the reason it was overturned. In fact, he brags about it.

Look at the chaos that has resulted.

Most Americans support abortion rights in some form, but the parties are hopelessly split. It will help Trump with his base to brag about overturning Roe v. Wade. It will help Biden with his base to blame Trump.

Joining us tonight is Kate Cox, a wife and mother from Dallas.

When she became pregnant again, the fetus had a fatal condition.

Her doctors told Kate that her own life and her ability to have children in the future were at risk if she didn’t act.

Because Texas law banned abortion, Kate and her husband had to leave the state to get the care she needed.

What her family has gone through should never have happened as well. But it is happening to so many others.

CNN’s Betsy Klein notes that Biden leaned on the personal stories of two of the guests in the first lady’s box: Latorya Beasley, an Alabama mother who had to pause in vitro fertilization treatment, and Kate Cox , the Texas mother of two who had to leave her state for access to a lifesaving abortion. And he pointed to a patchwork of abortion rights laws around the country.

But Republicans would have as much trouble passing a nationwide abortion ban as Democrats would have passing a bill to codify Roe v. Wade.

There are state laws banning the right to choose, criminalizing doctors, and forcing survivors of rape and incest to leave their states as well to get the care they need.

Many of you in this Chamber and my predecessor are promising to pass a national ban on reproductive freedom.

My God, what freedoms will you take away next?

In its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court majority wrote, “Women are not without – electoral or political power.”

No kidding.

Clearly, those bragging about overturning Roe v. Wade have no clue about the power of women in America.

They found out though when reproductive freedom was on the ballot and won in 2022, 2023, and they will find out again, in 2024.

Democratic candidates will do everything they can to raise the abortion rights issue during the general election. Even voters in red states have chosen to support abortion rights when given the chance. There could be abortion-related ballot questions in key states, including Florida .

If Americans send me a Congress that supports the right to choose , I promise you, I will restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land again!

This math doesn’t work. Passing legislation to protect abortion rights nationwide and restore Roe would surely require 60 votes in the Senate. Democrats currently have 51 seats, and there are few opportunities for pickups in 2024. Two Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, publicly support a national abortion rights law. That’s not nearly enough.

America cannot go back. I am here tonight to show the way forward. Because I know how far we’ve come.

Four years ago next week, before I came to office, our country was hit by the worst pandemic and the worst economic crisis in a century.

Remember the fear. Record job losses. Remember the spike in crime. And the murder rate.

A raging virus that would take more than 1 million American lives and leave millions of loved ones behind.

Biden’s figure needs context. Many lives were lost to Covid-19 during the Trump administration, but the US didn’t reach its millionth death until May 2022 when Biden was in office.

A mental health crisis of isolation and loneliness.

A president, my predecessor, who failed the most basic duty. Any President owes the American people the duty to care.

That is unforgivable.

I came to office determined to get us through one of the toughest periods in our nation’s history .

It is sometimes hard to remember that the Covid-19 pandemic started during the Trump administration and dominated the start of the Biden administration.

And we have. It doesn’t make the news but in thousands of cities and towns the American people are writing the greatest comeback story never told.

So let’s tell that story here and now.

America’s comeback is building a future of American possibilities, building an economy from the middle out and the bottom up , not the top down, investing in all of America, in all Americans to make sure everyone has a fair shot and we leave no one behind!

Republicans frequently try to label Biden as a socialist for spending taxpayer money. But Democrats and Biden argue the public has an interest in trying to make sure opportunities are accessible to everyone.

The pandemic no longer controls our lives. The vaccines that saved us from COVID are now being used to help beat cancer.

Turning setback into comeback.

That's America!

I inherited an economy that was on the brink. Now our economy is the envy of the world!

15 million new jobs in just three years - that's a record!

Biden’s claim is correct: the US economy added about 14.8 million jobs between Biden’s first full month in office, February 2021, and January 2024, more jobs than were added in any previous four-year presidential term. However, it’s important to note that Biden took office in an unusual pandemic context that makes meaningful comparison to other periods very difficult.

Unemployment at 50-year lows.

This needs context. The unemployment rate did hit a five-decade low during two months of early 2023 , 3.4%, and it has since remained close to that level — but the latest available unemployment rate, 3.7% for January, is higher than the rate was during nine months under President Donald Trump in 2019 and pre-pandemic 2020. (The rate then skyrocketed on account of the pandemic, and it was 6.4% the month Biden took office in January 2021.)

A record 16 million Americans are starting small businesses and each one is an act of hope.

With historic job growth and small business growth for Black, Hispanic, and Asian-Americans.

800,000 new manufacturing jobs in America and counting.

Biden’s figure is correct. The US economy added 791,000 manufacturing jobs from Biden’s first full month in office, February 2021, through January 2024, the last month for which Bureau of Labor Statistics data is available — though it’s worth noting that the growth largely occurred in 2021 and 2022 (with 746,000 manufacturing jobs added starting in February 2021) before a relatively flat 2023.

More people have health insurance today than ever before.

The racial wealth gap is the smallest it’s been in 20 years.

Wages keep going up and inflation keeps coming down!

Inflation has dropped from 9% to 3% – the lowest in the world!

Convincing Americans that their economy is good and improving may be Biden’s most important task in his reelection campaign. Because despite all of that data he rattled off, people are having trouble making ends meet. He’ll have more work to do to convince them .

And trending lower.

And now instead of importing foreign products and exporting American jobs, we’re exporting American products and creating American jobs – right here in America where they belong!

And the American people are beginning to feel it.

Consumer studies show consumer confidence is soaring.

Buy American has been the law of the land since the 1930s.

Past administrations including my predecessor failed to Buy American.

Not any more.

On my watch, federal projects like helping to build American roads bridges and highways will be made with American products built by American workers creating good-paying American jobs!

Thanks to my Chips and Science Act the United States is investing more in research and development than ever before.

Biden did oversee the passage of multiple, bipartisan bills to improve the country. The bipartisan infrastructure law is meant to improve things across the country. Propping up a semiconductor chip industry is also meant to make the US more independent from China.

During the pandemic a shortage of semiconductor chips drove up prices for everything from cell phones to automobiles.

Well instead of having to import semiconductor chips, which America invented I might add, private companies are now investing billions of dollars to build new chip factories here in America!

Creating tens of thousands of jobs many of them paying over $100,000 a year and don’t require a college degree.

In fact my policies have attracted $650 Billion of private sector investments in clean energy and advanced manufacturing creating tens of thousands of jobs here in America!

Thanks to our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, 46,000 new projects have been announced across your communities – modernizing our roads and bridges, ports and airports, and public transit systems.

A futuristic airport terminal, a fish passage and ski town bus lanes: Here are some of the projects being built through the infrastructure law.

Removing poisonous lead pipes so every child can drink clean water without risk of getting brain damage.

Providing affordable high speed internet for every American no matter where you live.

Urban, suburban, and rural communities — in red states and blue.

Record investments in tribal communities.

Because of my investments, family farms are better be able to stay in the family and children and grandchildren won’t have to leave home to make a living.

It’s transformative.

A great comeback story is Belvidere, Illinois. Home to an auto plant for nearly 60 years.

Before I came to office the plant was on its way to shutting down.

Thousands of workers feared for their livelihoods. Hope was fading.

Then I was elected to office and we raised Belvidere repeatedly with the auto company knowing unions make all the difference.

The UAW worked like hell to keep the plant open and get those jobs back. And together, we succeeded!

Instead of an auto factory shutting down an auto factory is re-opening and a new state-of-the art battery factory is being built to power those cars.

Instead of a town being left behind it’s a community moving forward again!

Because instead of watching auto jobs of the future go overseas 4,000 union workers with higher wages will be building that future, in Belvidere, here in America!

Here tonight is UAW President, Shawn Fain, a great friend, and a great labor leader.

And Dawn Simms, a third generation UAW worker in Belvidere.

Shawn, I was proud to be the first President in American history to walk a picket line.

Biden attended a U nited A uto W orkers rally in Belvidere with UAW President Shawn Fain last year. He also became the first president to join a picket line when he stood with workers in Michigan.

And today Dawn has a job in her hometown providing stability for her family and pride and dignity.

Showing once again, Wall Street didn’t build this country!

The middle class built this country! And unions built the middle class!

Both Biden and Trump will try to argue they are looking out for the middle class. The turn of White voters without college degrees away from Democrats and toward Republicans has been a major shift in politics that drove the rise of Trump.

When Americans get knocked down, we get back up!

We keep going!

That’s America! That’s you, the American people!

It’s because of you America is coming back!

It’s because of you, our future is brighter!

Never has a State of the Union transcript included so many exclamations. Biden presented as a vigorous and energized leader here, far from the doddering old man he has been portrayed as by Republicans.

And it’s because of you that tonight we can proudly say the State of our Union is strong and getting stronger!

Tonight I want to talk about the future of possibilities that we can build together.

A future where the days of trickle-down economics are over and the wealthy and biggest corporations no longer get all the breaks.

I grew up in a home where not a lot trickled down on my Dad’s kitchen table.

That’s why I’m determined to turn things around so the middle class does well the poor have a way up and the wealthy still does well.

After earlier praising Reagan’s foreign policy, here Biden trashed the guiding principle of Reagan’s economic policy (and Republicans who have worked tirelessly to cut taxes for a generation).

We all do well.

And there’s more to do to make sure you’re feeling the benefits of all we’re doing.

Americans pay more for prescription drugs than anywhere else.

It’s wrong and I’m ending it.

With a law I proposed and signed and not one Republican voted for we finally beat Big Pharma!

This is the Inflation Reduction Act , a post-Covid-19 recovery plan that Democrats loaded up with other policy priorities and were able to pass without Republican votes by bending budget rules.

Democrats had been trying for years to pass a law that would allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices . This is a first step.

Instead of paying $400 a month for insulin seniors with diabetes only have to pay $35 a month!

And now I want to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for every American who needs it!

For years people have talked about it but I finally got it done and gave Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs just like the VA does for our veterans.

That’s not just saving seniors money.

It’s saving taxpayers money cutting the federal deficit by $160 billion because Medicare will no longer have to pay exorbitant prices to Big Pharma.

It’s true that two of the main drug price provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, which Democrats pushed through Congress in 2022, are expected to reduce the deficit by $160 billion, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. In total, the law’s drug measures are expected to reduce the deficit by $237 billion, though delaying the implementation of a Trump administration drug rebate rule accounts for the difference.

This year Medicare is negotiating lower prices for some of the costliest drugs on the market that treat everything from heart disease to arthritis.

Now it’s time to go further and give Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices for 500 drugs over the next decade.

That will not only save lives it will save taxpayers another $200 Billion!

Starting next year that same law caps total prescription drug costs for seniors on Medicare at $2,000 a year even for expensive cancer drugs that can cost $10,000, $12,000, $15,000 a year.

Now I want to cap prescription drug costs at $2,000 a year for everyone!

Another major contrast between Trump and Biden. Trump still wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act . Biden seemed to be veering toward “Medicare for All” here.

Folks Obamacare, known as the Affordable Care Act is still a very big deal.

Over one hundred million of you can no longer be denied health insurance because of pre-existing conditions.

But my predecessor and many in this chamber want to take that protection away by repealing the Affordable Care Act I won’t let that happen!

We stopped you 50 times before and we will stop you again!

In fact I am protecting it and expanding it.

I enacted tax credits that save $800 per person per year reducing health care premiums for millions of working families.

Those tax credits expire next year.

I want to make those savings permanent!

Women are more than half of our population but research on women’s health has always been underfunded.

That’s why we’re launching the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, led by Jill who is doing an incredible job as First Lady.

Creating a commission or new office is a classic State of the Union maneuver. That this speech focused on women’s health is not surprising since Democrats are so focused on the issue.

Pass my plan for $12 Billion to transform women’s health research and benefit millions of lives across America!

I know the cost of housing is so important to you .

If inflation keeps coming down mortgage rates will come down as well.

But I’m not waiting.

I want to provide an annual tax credit that will give Americans $400 a month for the next two years as mortgage rates come down to put toward their mortgage when they buy a first home or trade up for a little more space.

My Administration is also eliminating title insurance fees for federally backed mortgages.

When you refinance your home this can save you $1,000 or more.

These are all very specific ideas to put people at ease about the cost of buying and renting, major issues that are affecting how people view the economy . But Biden can’t accomplish all of this. He will need Congress to enact tax credits. He will need inflation to continue to come down to bring down mortgage rates .

For millions of renters, we’re cracking down on big landlords who break antitrust laws by price-fixing and driving up rents.

I’ve cut red tape so more builders can get federal financing, which is already helping build a record 1.7 million housing units nationwide.

Now pass my plan to build and renovate 2 million affordable homes and bring those rents down!

To remain the strongest economy in the world we need the best education system in the world.

I want to give every child a good start by providing access to pre-school for 3- and 4-year-olds.

He’s actually wanted to enact universal pre-K for some time. But Democrats could not come up with the votes to include that program in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Studies show that children who go to pre-school are nearly 50% more likely to finish high school and go on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree no matter their background.

I want to expand high-quality tutoring and summer learning time and see to it that every child learns to read by third grade.

I’m also connecting businesses and high schools so students get hands-on experience and a path to a good-paying job whether or not they go to college.

And I want to make college more affordable.

Let’s continue increasing Pell Grants for working- and middle-class families and increase our record investments in HBCUs and Hispanic and Minority-serving Institutions

I fixed student loan programs to reduce the burden of student debt for nearly 4 Million Americans including nurses firefighters and others in public service like Keenan Jones a public-school educator in Minnesota who’s here with us tonight.

Biden has done quite a bit to forgive federal student loan debt, canceling about $138 billion so far. Here’s a good visualization of that . But his most expansive plan, which he hoped to do through executive action and would have canceled up to $20,000 for borrowers who make less than $125,000 a year, was rejected by the Supreme Court.

He’s educated hundreds of students so they can go to college now he can help his own daughter pay for college.

Such relief is good for the economy because folks are now able to buy a home start a business even start a family.

While we’re at it I want to give public school teachers a raise!

Now let me speak to a question of fundamental fairness for all Americans.

I’ve been delivering real results in a fiscally responsible way.

I’ve already cut the federal deficit by over one trillion dollars.

Biden’s claim leaves out such critical context that it is misleading. While the annual federal budget deficit was more than $1 trillion lower in the 2023 fiscal year than it was in both the 2020 fiscal year (under President Donald Trump) and the 2021 fiscal year (partially under Trump and partially under Biden), analysts have repeatedly noted that Biden’s own actions, including laws he has signed and executive orders he has issued, have had the overall effect of worsening annual deficits, not reducing them. As in past remarks , Biden didn’t explain that the primary reason the deficit fell by a record amount during his tenure was that it had skyrocketed to a record high at the end of Trump’s term because of bipartisan emergency pandemic relief spending, then fell as expected when that spending expired as planned.

I signed a bipartisan budget deal that will cut another trillion dollars over the next decade.

And now it’s my goal to cut the federal deficit $3 trillion more by making big corporations and the very wealthy finally pay their fair share.

Look, I’m a capitalist.

If you want to make a million bucks – great!

Just pay your fair share in taxes.

A fair tax code is how we invest in the things –

that make a country great, health care, education, defense, and more.

But here’s the deal.

The last administration enacted a $2 Trillion tax cut that overwhelmingly benefits the very wealthy and the biggest corporations and exploded the federal deficit.

They added more to the national debt than in any presidential term in American history.

Biden’s numbers are correct; the national debt rose from about $19.9 trillion to about $27.8 trillion during Trump’s tenure, an increase of about 39% and more than in any other four-year presidential term, in part because of Trump’s major tax cuts. But it is an oversimplification to blame presidents alone for debt incurred during their tenures. Some of the Trump-era increase in the debt was due to the trillions of dollars in emergency Covid-19 pandemic relief spending that passed with bipartisan support and because of spending required by safety-net programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, that were created by previous presidents.

For folks at home does anybody really think the tax code is fair?

Do you really think the wealthy and big corporations need another $2 trillion in tax breaks?

I sure don’t. I’m going to keep fighting like hell to make it fair!

Under my plan nobody earning less than $400,000 will pay an additional penny in federal taxes.

Nobody. Not one penny.

In fact the Child Tax Credit I passed during the pandemic cut taxes for millions of working families and cut child poverty in HALF.

Restore the Child Tax Credit because no child should go hungry in this country!

The way to make the tax code fair is to make big corporations and the very wealthy finally pay their share.

In 2020 55 of the biggest companies in America made $40 billion in profits and paid zero in federal income taxes.

Not any more!

Thanks to the law I wrote and signed big companies now have to pay a minimum of 15%.

Biden’s “not anymore” claim is false, an exaggeration. While his 15% corporate minimum tax will reduce the number of big companies that don’t pay any federal taxes, it’s not true that “not anymore” will any big company — such as the ones on the list of 55 companies Biden mentioned — ever do so. That’s because the minimum tax, on the “book income” companies report to investors, only applies to companies with at least $1 billion in average annual income. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, only 14 of the companies on its list of 55 non-payers reported having US pre-tax income of at least $1 billion.

But that’s still less than working people pay in federal taxes.

It’s time to raise the corporate minimum tax to at least 21% so every big corporation finally begins to pay their fair share.

I also want to end the tax breaks for Big Pharma, Big Oil, private jets, and massive executive pay!

End it now!

There are 1,000 billionaires in America.

You know what the average federal tax rate for these billionaires is? 8.2 percent!

That’s far less than the vast majority of Americans pay.

No billionaire should pay a lower tax rate than a teacher, a sanitation worker, a nurse!

That’s why I’ve proposed a minimum tax of 25% for billionaires. Just 25%.

That would raise $500 Billion over the next 10 years.

Imagine what that could do for America. Imagine a future with affordable child care so millions of families can get the care they need and still go to work and help grow the economy.

Imagine a future with paid leave because no one should have to choose between working and taking care of yourself or a sick family member.

Imagine a future with home care and elder care so seniors and people living with disabilities can stay in their homes and family caregivers get paid what they deserve!

Tonight, let’s all agree once again to stand up for seniors!

Many of my Republican friends want to put Social Security on the chopping block.

If anyone here tries to cut Social Security or Medicare or raise the retirement age I will stop them!

Working people who built this country pay more into Social Security than millionaires and billionaires do. It’s not fair.

We have two ways to go on Social Security.

Republicans will cut Social Security and give more tax cuts to the wealthy.

Biden went off script here, engaging in a back-and-forth with Republicans on the House floor. Republicans jeered when he said they would cut Social Security . Many in their party say they will do no such thing.

“That’s the proposal — oh no? You guys don’t want another $2 trillion tax cut?” Biden said. “I kind of thought that’s what your plan was. Well, that's good to hear.”

I will protect and strengthen Social Security and make the wealthy pay their fair share!

Too many corporations raise their prices to pad their profits charging you more and more for less and less.

That’s why we’re cracking down on corporations that engage in price gouging or deceptive pricing from food to health care to housing.

In fact, snack companies think you won’t notice when they charge you just as much for the same size bag but with fewer chips in it.

Pass Senator Bob Casey’s bill to put a stop to shrinkflation !

While a lot of people seem to blame Biden for inflation and cite government spending, he’d like to blame corporations.

CNN’s Bryan Mena notes while there is evidence that companies have reduced the size of their products, according to Labor Department data, the reason is usually to cut costs during times of high inflation and is a widespread practice. Companies do this because consumers are more sensitive to price changes than the size of a product becoming smaller, according to research. “Shrinkflation” due to corporate greed is a hasty generalization.

I’m also getting rid of junk fees those hidden fees added at the end of your bills without your knowledge. My administration just announced we’re cutting credit card late fees from $32 to just $8.

The banks and credit card companies don’t like it.

I’m saving American families $20 billion a year with all of the junk fees I’m eliminating .

And I’m not stopping there.

If this sounded familiar, that’s because he talked about junk fees at last year’s State of the Union .

My Administration has proposed rules to make cable, travel, utilities and online ticket sellers tell you the total price upfront so there are no surprises.

It matters.

This was his chance to say the words “ Taylor Swift .” Fail.

And so does this.

In November, my team began serious negotiations with a bipartisan group of Senators.

The result was a bipartisan bill with the toughest set of border security reforms we’ve ever seen in this country .

He went off script again here. CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez notes that Biden baited Republicans with praise for the bipartisan Senate border bill .

“Oh, you don’t like that bill, huh? That conservatives got together and said it was a good bill. I’ll be darned. That’s amazing,” Biden said, as some Republicans grumbled in the crowd.

Republican Sen. James Lankford, a key negotiator on the bipartisan border deal who faced pushback from members of his own party, stared ahead, appearing to nod as Biden ticked through elements of the bill -- including how it would shore up federal resources and include an emergency authority that would allow him to shut down the border if certain triggers are met.

That bipartisan deal would hire 1,500 more border security agents and officers.

100 more immigration judges to help tackle a backload of 2 million cases.

4,300 more asylum officers and new policies so they can resolve cases in 6 months instead of 6 years.

100 more high-tech drug detection machines to significantly increase the ability to screen and stop vehicles from smuggling fentanyl into America.

This bill would save lives and bring order to the border.

It would also give me as President new emergency authority to temporarily shut down the border when the number of migrants at the border is overwhelming.

The Border Patrol Union endorsed the bill.

The Chamber of Commerce endorsed the bill.

I believe that given the opportunity a majority of the House and Senate would endorse it as well.

But unfortunately, politics have derailed it so far.

I’m told my predecessor called Republicans in Congress and demanded they block the bill . He feels it would be a political win for me and a political loser for him.

It’s not about him or me.

Biden was interrupted here by GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who shouted at him about Laken Riley , the Georgia nursing student killed, allegedly by an undocumented immigrant. It’s an incident that has driven claims that migrants are criminals.

Biden picked up a pin that read “Say Her Name Laken Riley” and directly addressed the parents of Laken Riley, who had been invited to the speech by a congressman.

“Lincoln (sic) Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That's right. But how many of the thousands of people being killed by illegals - to her parents, I say my heart goes out to you. Having lost children myself, I understand.”

It is interesting that Biden also referred to the undocumented migrant who is suspected in Riley’s killing with the derogatory term “illegal.” Read more.

It’d be a winner for America!

My Republican friends you owe it to the American people to get this bill done.

We need to act.

And if my predecessor is watching instead of playing politics and pressuring members of Congress to block this bill, join me in telling Congress to pass it!

We can do it together. But here’s what I will not do.

I will not demonize immigrants saying they “poison the blood of our country” as he said in his own words.

I will not separate families.

I will not ban people from America because of their faith.

Trump’s rhetoric on immigration has gotten increasingly heated. He frequently refers to people crossing the border as “murderers,” for instance. The “poisoning the blood” line Trump uses is similar to a passage in Hitler’s manifesto “Mein Kampf.”

Unlike my predecessor, on my first day in office I introduced a comprehensive plan to fix our immigration system, secure the border, and provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and so much more.

Because unlike my predecessor, I know who we are as Americans.

We are the only nation in the world with a heart and soul that draws from old and new.

Home to Native Americans whose ancestors have been here for thousands of years. Home to people from every place on Earth.

Some came freely.

Some chained by force.

Some when famine struck, like my ancestral family in Ireland.

Some to flee persecution.

Some to chase dreams that are impossible anywhere but here in America.

That’s America, where we all come from somewhere, but we are all Americans.

We can fight about the border, or we can fix it. I’m ready to fix it.

Send me the border bill now!

Biden both eloquently talked about how the US is a nation of immigrants and also called on Congress to give him the power to close the border. His shift on the issue has been remarkable.

A transformational moment in our history happened 59 years ago today in Selma, Alabama.

Hundreds of foot soldiers for justice marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, named after a Grand Dragon of the KKK, to claim their fundamental right to vote.

They were beaten bloodied and left for dead.

Our late friend and former colleague John Lewis was at the march.

We miss him.

Joining us tonight are other marchers who were there including Betty May Fikes, known as the "Voice of Selma”.

A daughter of gospel singers and preachers, she sang songs of prayer and protest on that Bloody Sunday,

to help shake the nation’s conscience. Five months later, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law.

But 59 years later, there are forces taking us back in time.

Voter suppression. Election subversion. Unlimited dark money. Extreme gerrymandering.

John Lewis was a great friend to many of us here. But if you truly want to honor him and all the heroes who marched with him, then it’s time for more than just talk.

Pass and send me the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act!

If Democrats could not pass a new national voting standard when they controlled the House during Biden’s first two years in office, they will not be able to do it now, while Republicans control the chamber.

And stop denying another core value of America our diversity across American life.

Banning books.

It’s wrong!

Instead of erasing history, let’s make history!

I want to protect other fundamental rights!

Pass the Equality Act, and my message to transgender Americans: I have your back!

Pass the PRO Act for workers rights! And raise the federal minimum wage because every worker has the right to earn a decent living!

We are also making history by confronting the climate crisis, not denying it.

I’m taking the most significant action on climate ever in the history of the world.

I am cutting our carbon emissions in half by 2030.

The climate crisis may be an existential problem for humanity, but it did not rate mention in the first half of this State of the Union address. That said, Biden, with help from the Inflation Reduction Act, has done more than previous presidents to address the issue. But n ot enough to satisfy activists . Trump, meanwhile, likes to poke fun at climate efforts.

Creating tens of thousands of clean-energy jobs, like the IBEW workers building and installing 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations.

Conserving 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030.

Taking historic action on environmental justice for fence-line communities smothered by the legacy of pollution.

And patterned after the Peace Corps and Ameri Corps, I’ve launched a Climate Corps to put 20,000 young people to work at the forefront of our clean energy future.

I’ll triple that number this decade.

All Americans deserve the freedom to be safe, and America is safer today than when I took office.

The year before I took office, murders went up 30% nationwide the biggest increase in history.

That was then.

Now, through my American Rescue Plan, which every Republican voted against, I’ve made the largest investment in public safety ever.

Last year, the murder rate saw the sharpest decrease in history, and violent crime fell to one of the lowest levels in more than 50 years.

This is true, at least based on preliminary 2023 data that should be treated with caution. The preliminary 2023 data published by the FBI, running through the third quarter of the year, showed that violent crime was down 8.2% compared to the same period in 2022 — a decline that would be “historically large” for a year, crime data expert Jeff Asher wrote in a December article. The data generally confirms Biden’s description of violent crime falling across the nation, though some communities have seen increases. Asher wrote: “The quarterly data shows violent crime down in big cities, small cities, suburban counties, and rural counties, pretty much across the board.”

But we have more to do.

Help cities and towns invest in more community police officers, more mental health workers, and more community violence intervention.

Give communities the tools to crack down on gun crime, retail crime, and carjacking.

Keep building public trust, as I’ve been doing by taking executive action on police reform, and calling for it to be the law of the land, directing my Cabinet to review the federal classification of marijuana, and expunging thousands of convictions for mere possession , because no one should be jailed for using or possessing marijuana!

Biden’s mass clemency for federal offenses of simple marijuana possession, announced before the m idterm elections in 2022 , was seen as a first step to national decriminalization.

To take on crimes of domestic violence, I am ramping up federal enforcement of the Violence Against Women Act, that I proudly wrote, so we can finally end the scourge of violence against women in America!

And there’s another kind of violence I want to stop.

With us tonight is Jasmine, whose 9-year-old sister Jackie was murdered with 21 classmates and teachers at her elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Soon after it happened, Jill and I went to Uvalde and spent hours with the families.

We heard their message, and so should everyone in this chamber do something.

I did do something by establishing the first-ever Office of Gun Violence Prevention in the White House that Vice President Harris is leading.

Meanwhile, my predecessor told the NRA he’s proud he did nothing on guns when he was President.

After another school shooting in Iowa he said we should just “get over it.”

I say we must stop it.

I’m proud we beat the NRA when I signed the most significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years!

Now we must beat the NRA again!

I’m demanding a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines!

Pass universal background checks!

Again, none of this will happen without a major change in Congress.

None of this violates the Second Amendment or vilifies responsible gun owners.

As we manage challenges at home, we’re also managing crises abroad including in the Middle East.

I know the last five months have been gut-wrenching for so many people, for the Israeli people, the Palestinian people, and so many here in America.

This crisis began on October 7th with a massacre by the terrorist group Hamas.

1,200 innocent people women and girls men and boys slaughtered, many enduring sexual violence.

The deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

250 hostages taken.

Here in the chamber tonight are American families whose loved ones are still being held by Hamas.

I pledge to all the families that we will not rest until we bring their loved ones home.

We will also work around the clock to bring home Evan and Paul, Americans being unjustly detained all around the world.

Israel has a right to go after Hamas.

This is an incredibly important issue for Biden. Nothing else splits Democrats at the moment like Israel. Biden is a self-proclaimed Zionist. While he has increasingly called out the conservative government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it’s not nearly enough to satisfy the large portion of Democrats who are motivated by the plight of Palestinians who are stuck and starving in Gaza .

Hamas could end this conflict today by releasing the hostages, laying down arms, and surrendering those responsible for October 7th.

Israel has an added burden because Hamas hides and operates among the civilian population. But Israel also has a fundamental responsibility to protect innocent civilians in Gaza.

This war has taken a greater toll on innocent civilians than all previous wars in Gaza combined.

More than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed.

Most of whom are not Hamas.

Thousands and thousands are innocent women and children.

Girls and boys also orphaned.

Nearly 2 million more Palestinians under bombardment or displaced.

Homes destroyed, neighborhoods in rubble, cities in ruin.

Families without food, water, medicine.

It’s heartbreaking.

We’ve been working non-stop to establish an immediate ceasefire that would last for at least six weeks.

It is notable that while Biden said the US is working for an immediate ceasefire, he did not say permanent. Israel wants the ability to revisit any ceasefire after six weeks.

Biden’s optimism for a ceasefire seems to have cooled. He had previously predicted there would be a ceasefire by this past Monday. In the meantime, the world was horrified by the killing of more than 100 Palestinians trying to get food from an Israeli aid truck.

As Biden spoke, House Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib — the sole Palestinian American member of Congress — held a sign reading “Ceasefire Now.”

It would get the hostages home, ease the intolerable humanitarian crisis, and build toward something more enduring.

The United States has been leading international efforts to get more humanitarian assistance into Gaza.

Tonight, I’m directing the U.S. military to lead an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the Gaza coast that can receive large ships carrying food, water, medicine and temporary shelters.

No U.S. boots will be on the ground.

This temporary pier would enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza every day.

This pier sounds like an incredible engineering feat. It’s not clear how soon it can be achieved. Also, this was the second time in the speech where Biden pledged that US troops will not get involved in an international conflict.

But Israel must also do its part.

Israel must allow more aid into Gaza and ensure that humanitarian workers aren’t caught in the cross fire.

To the leadership of Israel I say this.

Humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip.

Protecting and saving innocent lives has to be a priority.

As we look to the future, the only real solution is a two-state solution.

I say this as a lifelong supporter of Israel and the only American president to visit Israel in wartime.

This is a public warning to Israel and an insistence that Israel must allow a Palestinian state. But it is not particularly stern considering the tens of thousands of Palestinians who have died .

There is no other path that guarantees Israel’s security and democracy.

There is no other path that guarantees Palestinians can live with peace and dignity.

There is no other path that guarantees peace between Israel and all of its Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia.

Creating stability in the Middle East also means containing the threat posed by Iran.

That’s why I built a coalition of more than a dozen countries to defend international shipping and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

I’ve ordered strikes to degrade Houthi capabilities and defend U.S. Forces in the region.

As Commander in Chief, I will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and military personnel.

The strikes have not so far had a deterrent effect.

For years, all I’ve heard from my Republican friends and so many others is China’s on the rise and America is falling behind.

They’ve got it backward.

America is rising.

We have the best economy in the world.

Since I’ve come to office, our GDP is up.

He is welcome to say this. Most Americans do not currently seem to believe it.

And our trade deficit with China is down to the lowest point in over a decade.

We’re standing up against China’s unfair economic practices.

And standing up for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

I’ve revitalized our partnerships and alliances in the Pacific.

I’ve made sure that the most advanced American technologies can’t be used in China’s weapons.

Frankly for all his tough talk on China, it never occurred to my predecessor to do that.

We want competition with China, but not conflict.

And we’re in a stronger position to win the competition for the 21st Century against China or anyone else for that matter.

Here at home I’ve signed over 400 bipartisan bills.

But there’s more to do to pass my Unity Agenda.

Strengthen penalties on fentanyl trafficking.

Pass bipartisan privacy legislation to protect our children online.

CNN's Brian Fung notes that this call for a bill to regulate social media platforms is the third time in as many years that Biden has criticized the social media industry in his State of the Union speech.

Notably, however, Biden’s call specifically highlighted legislation to protect children’s privacy — not any of the myriad bills circulating that would impose targeted restrictions on social media companies .

The House could vote soon on a separate bill meant to pressure TikTok’s China-linked parent company to spin off the app used by 170 million Americans.

Harness the promise of A.I. and protect us from its peril.

Ban A.I. voice impersonation and more!

Fung also notes that Biden knows personally about this. A fake robocall campaign cloned his voice and targeted thousands of New Hampshire primary voters in what authorities have described as an AI-enabled election meddling attempt.

But US lawmakers have struggled to advance any meaningful AI legislation in the roughly one year since Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made a rare and personal effort to put AI at the top of the congressional agenda.

Even as disinformation experts warn of AI’s threats to elections and public discourse, few expect Congress to pass legislation reining in the AI industry during a divisive election year.

And keep our one truly sacred obligation, to train and equip those we send into harm’s way and care for them and their families when they come home, and when they don’t.

That’s why I signed the PACT Act, one of the most significant laws ever, helping millions of veterans who were exposed to toxins and who now are battling more than 100 cancers.

Many of them didn’t come home.

We owe them and their families.

And we owe it to ourselves to keep supporting our new health research agency called ARPA-H and remind us that we can do big things like end cancer as we know it!

Let me close with this.

I know I may not look like it, but I’ve been around a while.

And when you get to my age certain things become clearer than ever before.

I know the American story.

Again and again I’ve seen the contest between competing forces in the battle for the soul of our nation.

Between those who want to pull America back to the past and those who want to move America into the future.

My lifetime has taught me to embrace freedom and democracy.

A future based on the core values that have defined America.

Honesty. Decency. Dignity. Equality.

To respect everyone. To give everyone a fair shot. To give hate no safe harbor.

Now some other people my age see a different story.

An American story of resentment, revenge, and retribution.

That’s not me.

Biden put forward an energetic persona in this speech. And he pointed out that Trump is his age. Actually, Trump is four years younger.

The name “Trump” did not appear in the speech. But he was clearly top of mind. Trump has promised to be his supporters’ “retribution” and still does not admit to losing the 2020 election. Biden’s burden will be to convince voters who are wavering that trying to upend democracy should disqualify Trump.

I was born amid World War II when America stood for freedom in the world.

I grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania and Claymont, Delaware among working people who built this country.

I watched in horror as two of my heroes, Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy, were assassinated and their legacies inspired me to pursue a career in service.

A public defender, county councilman, elected United States Senator at 29, then Vice President, to our first Black President, now President, with our first woman Vice President.

In my career I’ve been told I’m too young and I’m too old.

Whether young or old, I’ve always known what endures.

Our North Star.

The very idea of America, that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives.

We’ve never fully lived up to that idea, but we’ve never walked away from it either.

And I won’t walk away from it now.

My fellow Americans the issue facing our nation isn’t how old we are it’s how old our ideas are?

Hate, anger, revenge, retribution are among the oldest of ideas.

But you can’t lead America with ancient ideas that only take us back.

To lead America, the land of possibilities, you need a vision for the future of what America can and should be.

Tonight you’ve heard mine.

I see a future where we defend democracy not diminish it.

I see a future where we restore the right to choose and protect other freedoms not take them away.

I see a future where the middle class finally has a fair shot and the wealthy finally have to pay their fair share in taxes.

I see a future where we save the planet from the climate crisis and our country from gun violence.

Above all, I see a future for all Americans!

I see a country for all Americans!

And I will always be a president for all Americans!

Because I believe in America!

I believe in you the American people.

You’re the reason I’ve never been more optimistic about our future!

The speech ended with many more exclamations and a vigorous Biden pumping people up.

So let’s build that future together!

Let’s remember who we are!

We are the United States of America.

There is nothing beyond our capacity when we act together!

May God bless you all.

May God protect our troops.

Speech on Health is Wealth for Students

Health is wealth speech 1.

Good morning to my respected teachers and all my classmates. As we have gathered here to celebrate this auspicious occasion, I would like to give a speech on health as wealth as we all know the common saying that health is wealth, but I do not think that we follow this proverb in our daily life to get maintained. We all know well that good health leads to a good way; however, no one takes care of our health. If we are not living in discipline and following nature’s rules, we can never become healthy in life and never reach success.

We have been given two legs and two hands to walk and do work; however, if we are not properly using our organs, it is our fault that leads us to failure. Most people spend their whole day and night just sitting or lying in bed for most days of the week and months. They are just like fish without swimming and birds without flying. Can you imagine what will happen if fishes do not swim or birds do not fly? Most commonly, they easily would be the food of big animals, and slowly their species would get destroyed. In this way, people with more comfort in their lives cannot be so healthy.

Some decades ago, people were strong and healthy because they were used to walking for long-distance, and they had to perform every household chores own. In recent decades, the growth of technologies has been speedy manner has decreased man’s efforts in every walk of life. Earlier, the life of our grandparents was good, and their livelihood was very healthy because of hunting, farming, plowing, harvesting, planting, walking, running, etc. Nowadays, almost every person of any age group suffers from diseases (like high blood pressure, heart attack, gout, stress-related disease, etc.).

To keep ourselves healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and intellectually, we need to be active daily, including a well-maintained diet, exercises, positive thinking, and following good habits. We need to be disciplined in every walk of life.

Health is Wealth Speech 2

Good morning to the respected Principal, teachers, and all my dear friends. As we have gathered here to celebrate this great occasion, I would like to give a speech on health is wealth. It is a most common saying that we generally listen to our grandparents, parents, and teachers. But, I want to ask you how many of us have to think about and follow this remedy in our lives. We all know that what is ‘health is wealth,’ but has anyone of us thought of its real meaning. Nowadays, people have been so busy that they have no time for their health maintenance, doing exercises, talking to family members, friends, neighbors, etc., because of increasing competition and technologies.

We should never forget that there is nothing in our life without health. Health is more valuable for us than other things in life because it is the only successful tool. Unhealthy people can never get the real joy and peace of life. This famous proverb tells us that health is more valuable than money and other precious things worldwide. If we suffer from any disease, money can only help us get medicine and limited relief; however, it cannot obliterate diseases from the body. If we get relief from one disease, it will leave other diseases as a complication. It means a weak and unhealthy body calls many diseases one by one, which we never can be free of.

We need to keep ourselves healthy and happy to cope with all life’s problems easily. We can be healthy through proper and daily exercises, morning walks, a healthy diet, following good habits, a disciplined lifestyle, and positive thinking. A healthy body keeps the body, mind, and soul happy and peaceful. A healthy person becomes completely free from the illnesses in body and mind and thus enjoys stable health and happiness. Healthy people of any age group depend upon several factors like food, physical activity, pollution, sleeping habits, way of thinking, mental condition, water, air, sunlight, etc. With physical exercises, proper body care is also very necessary. Unhealthy people spend their whole lives suffering from diseases and complaining to others about their condition. Life is wonderful if it is lived in the right direction. Please do not waste it by being diseased; instead, live it happily. My motto for today’s speech on this topic is only to share my feelings with all of you for our wellness.

Health is Wealth Speech 3

Good morning to the respected teachers and all my dear friends. I want to speak over the common saying ‘health is wealth’ on this auspicious occasion. I know that every one of us is well recognized with this proverb; however, only a few people follow this strategy in their life. The real meaning of this proverb is that the one who has good health becomes the happiest person in the world, even from the rich people. Whether a person is rich or poor, he would be unhappy if he suffered any disease or disability. This proverb means a lot for all of us if we strictly understand and follow this remedy. Conditions never ask a person for richness or poorness; they affect the person if found weak and unhealthy.

Health is wealth proverb compares the value of health with wealth and indicates that health is more valuable than wealth. When a rich person gets diseased, he becomes more unhappy than a poor healthy person. Their life becomes useless instead of having lots of money. Money cannot buy happiness and healthy life; it can only give comfort and joy for a limited time; however, good health always goes together in every bad and good condition. Good health makes a person (healthy or poor) happy and cheerful forever. A healthy person lives a better life than a rich person. They feel no burden to them and live a stress-free life.

A healthy person can be healthy in every walk of life. However, an unhealthy person cannot bear a little problematic condition. Being healthy is not so costly; one needs to maintain a timely diet, a healthy lifestyle, and daily physical exercises. Some people save their money for future purposes but do not take care of their health; saving money is a good habit, but declining health is not good for the future. People should maintain their health together, saving money.

Health is Wealth Speech 4

Good morning to the respected teachers and all my dear friends. Today, I want to give a speech on health is wealth.’ We all know that good health is a boon and a real jewel of a happy life. Good health is the precious thing a person gets in their life. Once a person losses their health can never get back through money. It is the theme that this proverb tells us. It is very easy to maintain good health through a disciplined lifestyle, regular exercise, common and healthy food, positive thoughts, personal hygiene, and cleanliness. Healthy people do not need to spend money on medicines and making a round of doctors. However, an unhealthy person needs to spend more money to cure their diseases.

Good health is the freedom of sickness and diseases, and it is the feeling of physical, mental, and social well-being of a person. If one maintains good health, they are blessed with a most precious gift. Being a well healthy person, it is very necessary to be healthy in every aspect, physically, mentally, and socially. A healthy person is only able to enjoy all the pleasures of life. Living a happy life and being rich is not so important; however, it is necessary to be healthy. Anyone can achieve good health through continuous efforts. Proper awareness about bad habits is also essential to keep the body away from illnesses.

To maintain proper health, we should practice a disciplined life from early morning to the evening. We should get up in the early morning, go for a morning walk or do some exercises, breathe some fresh air, get fresh, maintain proper hygiene and eat food timely. Laughing is also the best medium to keep ourselves happy and healthy. It helps to be happy by overcoming anger and fear and allows one to enjoy life to the full.

Speech on Health and Fitness

Speech on Health and Fitness (1000+ Words)

Respected Principal, teachers, and dear friends,

Keeping oneself healthy is crucial as it is said that “health is wealth.” Regular exercise helps in maintaining fitness and keeping one’s mind alert. Good health ensures an active and agile mind, just as a person’s mental state reflects their physical health, a weak and unhealthy body affects their mental well-being.

Several recent studies have revealed that the fast-paced and stressful lifestyle of today’s era is responsible for various health conditions, especially heart and neurological problems. Being fit and healthy can help people maintain a positive outlook towards life and work.

Life is meant to be lived joyfully and positively, despite the obstacles and challenges we face. To enjoy the good things in life and tackle its difficulties, one requires the energy and enthusiasm that only a healthy and fit body can provide.

The journey towards good health starts right from childhood. It depends on how a mother maintains her health and fitness, consumes a balanced diet, and ensures that the environment where they reside is hygienic. These are the two fundamental requirements for a healthy mother and baby. Unfortunately, many children still suffer from dreaded diseases like polio, diphtheria, and typhoid. Hence, prevention is key to maintaining children’s health.

Parents have a great love for their children and want them to grow up healthy, brilliant, and intelligent. It is the basic responsibility of parents to ensure the physical and mental well-being of their children. However, the health and fitness of children are equally important to others as they are the future of the country and the hope of everyone.

As the saying goes, “A child is the father of a man.” The growth and development of a child determine the quality of the adult they will become. A healthy child is likely to grow into a healthy and fit man who can be a valuable resource for the country, society, and humanity. It is not wrong for others to come forward and extend their services to help children maintain good health and fitness.

Various people such as educators, neighbors, friends, athletes , coaches, trainers, media, social workers, doctors, and gymnasts can play a significant role in inspiring children to adopt good health and fitness practices.

Schools also provide children with opportunities to develop their physical and mental standards. Good health has always been valuable, but it is even more critical in today’s competitive age where life has become exceptionally quick and stressful right from the beginning.

In today’s world, where educational standards are high and competition is tough, students are expected to study hard and sit in the classroom for extended periods. To ensure that students learn well and maintain good health and fitness, educational institutions need to give equal importance to physical exercises and leisure activities.

When we think of good schools and educational institutions, we often remember those with excellent facilities for sports and other activities that provide physical exercise and entertainment to the students. After extended periods of study and mental work, students require outdoor exercises to refresh their minds.

Every individual with good academic records and sound health is certain to achieve their goals in life, regardless of their chosen career. Good education and health and fitness enable a person to face challenges confidently, leading to progress and success.

A closer look reveals that individuals with good health and fitness perform better in their personal and professional lives. Physical and mental health are equally important for better performance and results. Therefore, everyone needs to prioritize good health to become a result-oriented individual.

Good health and fitness can compensate for a lack of talent in a person’s profession. Working hard on the farm to earn a living requires a lot of physical effort, but it also brings mental satisfaction and a good night’s sleep. In addition, a physically and mentally strong person can contribute more to society and receive recognition from others.

Many professions require good health and fitness as primary qualifications. The armed forces, paramilitary, police, and other forces require individuals who are physically fit and mentally alert. We have witnessed many heroic acts by individuals in these forces who have received awards for their bravery and valor under extreme conditions.

In addition, the private sector also values a well-built appearance along with professional skills. Health is of great importance everywhere, and it is an asset throughout one’s life. Positive thoughts from a healthy mind bring a sparkle to a person’s face, while negative thoughts and illness can lead to a cycle of reactions, which can have a detrimental impact on both the mind and body.

Improving healthcare and fitness is crucial because there is undeniable value in good health. However, many rural areas lack healthcare facilities and suffer from a shortage of doctors and medication. Consequently, people with multiple illnesses or injuries cannot receive adequate treatment. Even if they travel to larger cities, poor individuals may be unable to afford private hospital treatment for major diseases.

Despite the importance of medical facilities, increased awareness is necessary for maintaining good health and physical fitness. Individuals who are mindful of their health and fitness can join yoga camps or gyms, serving as a source of inspiration for others. By adopting healthy lifestyles, people can become disease-free and enjoy better health and well-being.

Furthermore, freeing oneself from unhealthy and negative thoughts like self-indulgence can foster the will to improve one’s body and mind, reducing illnesses with psychological origins. As a result, individuals can experience superior mental and physical health.

With this, I conclude my speech. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.

Communist Morality

Source : “Communist Morality,” published by Progress, Moscow, c. 1963; Transcribed : by Rasmus M.

From a Prison Diary

April 30, 1908.

... Where lies the way out of the hell of present-day life, in which the wolfish law of exploitation, oppression and violence holds sway? The way out lies in the idea of a life which is based on harmony, a full life enjoyed by the whole of society, by all mankind; the way out is in the idea of socialism, the idea of solidarity of the working people. This idea is already approaching realisation, the people are ready to receive it with open arms. The time for it has already arrived. The ranks of the advocates of this idea must be united and the banner carried aloft so that the people see it and follow it. And today this is the most urgent of the tasks of Social-Democracy, of the tasks of the small handful that survives.

Socialism should cease to be only the scientific prevision of the future. It should become the torch that kindles indomitable faith and energy in the hearts of people....

May 10, 1908

... It would not be worthwhile living if the star of socialism, the star of the future were not shining down on mankind. For the “ego” cannot live if in itself it does not contain the rest of the world and the people. Such is the nature of this “ego.”...

May 21, 1908

... It is necessary to instil in the masses our own confidence in the inevitable bankruptcy of evil, so that they will be left with no doubt, so that they will come through this moment in serried ranks, prepared for battle. This is the task of the theoreticians. But the tasks of the others are to lay bare and show up this evil, to lay bare the sufferings and torments of the masses and of the individual fighters torn from their midst by the enemy, to give them the meaning they actually have and which gives them the strength to bear everything courageously, without wavering. Only in this way is it possible to instil in the masses courage and understanding of the need for struggle. Those who influence the mind and those who put confidence in victory into the heart and mind are both needed. Scientists and poets, teachers and propagandists are needed. I recall the booklet “From the Battlefield” published by the “Proletariat" [1] Party, which described the sufferings of the people, the steadfastness and courage they displayed in the struggle, and the tremendous influence it had. How I would wish such a booklet to appear now! But now it is more difficult to collect and compare facts, because they cover so much ground and there are so many of them. But, on the other hand, there are greater opportunities and possibilities now. If someone would undertake this work, or at least only the guidance of this work, then in a year or two such book could appear. It would reflect not only our sufferings and our doctrine, but also that longing for a full and real life for the sake of which man would readily endure suffering and sacrifice....

December 31, 1908

... I have matured in prison in torments of solitude, in torments of longing for the world and for life. And, in spite of this, doubt in the justness of our cause has never risen in my heart. And now, when perhaps for many years all hope is buried in torrents of blood, when they have been crucified on the gallows, when many thousands of fighters for freedom are languishing in dungeons or thrown out into snowbound Siberia – I feel proud. Already I see tremendous masses set in motion shattering the old system, masses among whom new forces are being trained for fresh struggles. I feel proud that I am with them, that 1 see, feel and understand them, and that I, too, have suffered much together with them. It is sometimes hard, at times even terrible, here in prison.... Yet, if I had to begin life all over again, I would begin it in the same way. And not out of a sense of duty, not because I had to. For me, it is an organic necessity.

...I curse neither my fate nor the many years in prison, for I know that all this is necessary in order to destroy the other vast prison which lies outside the walls of this horrible “pavilion.” This is not idle philosophising, not cold calculation, but the result of an indomitable desire for freedom, for a full life. Out there, comrades and | friends are drinking our health, and I, alone in my cell, am thinking of them: may they live on, may they forge the weapons and be worthy of the cause for which the struggle is being waged....

June 3, 1909

... To live – does it not mean to have indomitable faith in victory?

August 8, 1909

... In this connection [2] I am filled with apprehension. I shall go away, but this terrible life here will continue as before. This is strange and incomprehensible. It is not the horrors of this gloomy place that draw one to it, but the feeling for all the comrades, friends and unknown neighbours – strangers, yet at the same time near ones. Here we came to feel and realise how necessary is man to man, what man means to man. Here we learned to feel love not for women alone, we learned to be unashamed of our feelings and of our desire to give people happiness.

...And if here we long for flowers, we have also here learned to love people as we love flowers; and precisely here, where there is no desperate struggle for a crust of bread, and where there floats to the surface that which out there was of necessity concealed in the depths of the human heart. And for this reason we love this place of our execution, for here we made clear to ourselves that the struggle which brought us here is also the struggle for our personal happiness, for emancipation from the violence imposed on us, from the chains that drag us down.

From Letters to Relatives [3]

To a. e. bulhak [4], january 25 (13), 1898.

... How is your little Rudolph? He must have grown a lot – does he walk or talk? See that you bring him up so that he values honesty above all else; such a person feels happy in all circumstances of life!

September 19 (7), 1898

... And we, in exile, must now gain in strength, physically, mentally and morally, in order to be prepared when the time comes. True, there are few who envy us our lot, but we who see the bright future of our cause, who see and realise its might, realise that life has chosen us to be the fighters, we who are fighting for that better future would never, never exchange our position for philistine vegetating. We are least of all made despondent by unpleasant side of life, since our life consists in work for the cause which is above everyday trifles. Our cause was born not so long ago, but it will develop beyond bounds, it is immortal.

November 17 (5), 1898

... You say that our feelings seem to relate in greater measure to mankind as a whole than to individuals. Never believe that this is possible. People who say so are hypocrites: they are simply deceiving themselves and others. It is not possible only to feel for people in general, people in general is an abstraction, for what is concrete is the sum-total of individuals. In actual fact, feelings can only be aroused in relation to the concrete phenomenon and never in relation to an abstraction. A man can feel sympathy towards social misfortune only if he feels sympathy towards the misfortune of every individual....

October 21 (8), 1901

... I do not know how to hate by halves or to love by halves. I do not know how to give only half of my heart. I can give all my heart or I give nothing. I have drunk from the cup of life not only all the bitterness, but all the sweetness as well, and if anyone says to me: take a look at the wrinkles on your brow, at your emaciated body, at the life you now lead, take a look and recognise that life has broken you, then I would reply: life has not broken me but I have broken life, it has not taken everything from me, but I have taken everything from it with my whole being and spirit! Yes, indeed!

...I came to loathe wealth because I learned to love people, because with all the fibres of my being I see and feel that today ... people worship the golden calf which has turned human souls into the souls of beasts and driven love out of people’s hearts. Remember that there is a sacred spark in the soul of people like me ... a spark which gives a glow of happiness even at the stake.

...I love children passionately....When I think that terrible want, on the one hand, and excessive wealth, on the other, lead to the degeneration of these little ones ... I am glad for your children, that you are neither rich nor poor, that from childhood they will realise the need to work in order to live and this means that they will grow up into real people. For the children are the future! They must be strong in spirit and know from childhood how to face up to life....

But I have spirit enough for another thousand years or more.... Even here in prison I see how the undying flame burns: the flame is my heart and the hearts of my comrades suffering torments here

To A. E. and G. A. Bulhak [5]

Beginning of november 1901.

...No!! I am the same as I was before; what embittered me before, embitters me now; what I loved before, I love now; what gladdened me before, gladdens me now; as I acted before, so I act now; as I thought before, so I think now; as misfortunes and trials have not passed me by, so in the future they will not pass me by; my path remains the same; as I loathed evil before, so I loathe it now; as before, I am striving heart and soul so that there will be no injustice, crime, drunkenness, depravity, excessive | luxury, brothels where people sell body or soul or both together; so that there will be no oppression, fratricidal wars, national strife.... I would like my love to envelop all mankind, to warm it and cleanse it of the dirt of modern life....

... A tremendous task faces you: to’ educate and shape the minds of your children. Be vigilant! For parents are to a large extent morally responsible for whether their children are good or bad. I would like to write a great deal more about children, but I do not know how you will accept my advice, whether you might not regard this interference in your affairs as out of place. In any case, rest assured that I am guided here only by my love for your children. Kiss them heartily for me.... May they grow up healthy and cheerful, full of love for their parents and other people; may they grow up courageous and strong in spirit and body; may they never barter their conscience; may they be happier than we are and live to see the triumph of freedom, brotherhood and love....

To A. E. Bulhak

October 6 (september 23), 1902.

...I do not know why I love children more than anything else. When I meet them my ill humour immediately vanishes. I could never love a woman as I love them and I think I could never love my own children more than those that were not my own.... In particularly hard moments I dream that I have taken some child, a foundling, and am caring for it and we are both happy. I live for it, feel it near me, it loves me with the childish love in which there is nothing false; I feel the warmth of this love and I terribly want it near me. But these are only dreams. I cannot allow myself this, I have to be moving about all the time, and with a child I could not. Often, very often, it seems to me that even a mother does not love children as ardently as I do....

October 22 (9), 1905

...I should like so much to perceive the beauty in nature, in people, in what they create, to delight in them, to perfect myself, because beauty and goodness are like two sisters. The asceticism that has fallen to my lot is so alien to me. I would like to be a father and put into the soul of a young creature everything good that is on the earth, to see how the rays of my love for it would produce a luxuriant blossom of the human soul....

June 16 (3), 1913

. .. Like a flower, the human soul unconsciously imbibes the rays of the sun and longs eternally for it, for its light; it fades and shrivels when evil shades off the light Our vigour and faith in a better future for mankind is built on this striving of every human soul towards the sunlight, and so there should never be hopelessness.... The evil genius of mankind today is hypocrisy: love in words, but in practice – a merciless struggle to exist, to achieve so-called “happiness,” to make a career.... To be a ray of light for others, to irradiate light, is the greatest happiness a man can achieve. Then a man does not fear suffering or death, misfortune or need. Then a man ceases to fear death, although only then he does really learn to love life. Only then will he walk on the earth with his eyes open, seeing, hearing and understanding everything, only then will he emerge from his narrow shell into the light and feel the joys and sufferings of all mankind; only then will he be a real man.

To S. S. Dzerzhinskaya [6]

December 15 (2), 1913.

... Love for a child, like all great love, becomes creative and can give the child true and lasting happiness when it broadens the scope of life of the one who loves, makes him a more valuable person, and when it does not transform the person loved into an idol. Love which is showered on only one person and which derives from him alone all joy in life, making everything else a burden and torture, such love carries with it hell for both persons....

In order to save and enrich his soul, he must be taught to see and hear all he is already capable of seeing and hearing, so that his love for you becomes deep friendship and infinite trust....

January 19 (6), 1914

...Where there is love there should be trust...

...The man who believes in an idea and is alive cannot be useless if he does not himself renounce his idea. Only death, when it comes, will have its word to say about uselessness. But as long as there is a glimmer of life and the idea itself is alive, I shall dig the earth, do the roughest work, give everything I can. And the thought is soothing, makes it possible to endure the torment. A man must do his duty, follow his path to the end. And even when the eyes no longer see and are blind to the beauty of the world, the soul knows of this beauty and remains its servant. The torment of blindness remains, but there is something above this torment – there is faith in life, in people, there is freedom and the realisation of one’s constant duty....

March 16 (3), 1914

...When I think of all the misfortunes in life that lie in wait for a man, of the fact that a man is so often deprived of all he is most attached to, my thoughts again tell me that in life one has to love with all one’s heart and soul that which is not transitory, that which cannot be taken away from a man and thanks to which his attachment to individuals and things becomes possible....

Love for suffering, oppressed mankind, the eternal longing in the heart of everyone for beauty and happiness, strength and harmony, urges us to seek a way out and to find salvation here, in life itself, and shows us the way out. It opens a man’s heart not only to his near ones, it opens his eyes and ears and gives him gigantic strength and confidence in victory. Then misfortune becomes a source of happiness and strength, for then comes clear thought throwing light on a hitherto gloomy life. From that time onwards, each new misfortune is no longer a reason for withdrawal from life, a source of apathy and despondency, but again and again inspires a man to go on living, to struggle and to love. And when the time comes and a man’s own life comes to an end, he can go calmly, without despair, and not be afraid of death....

To S. S. Dzerzhinskaya

June 24 (11), 1914.

... I want to be worthy of the ideas you and I share. And it seems to me that every sign of weakness on my part, of longing for the end and peace, every hint of “I can’t go on” would be a betrayal and the renunciation of my feelings towards you and of that song of life that has always been and is still in me....

Yan [7] must not be a hot-house flower. He should have the whole dialectics of feelings, so as to be capable in life to fight for the truth and ideas. In his heart he should have something sacred that is broader and stronger than the sacred feeling for his mother or other people near and dear to him. He should know how to love the idea, that which links him with the masses, which will be a shining light in his life. He should understand that you and all who surround him, to whom he is attached, whom he loves, have something more sacred than the love for a child, the love for him, something sacred from which he and the love and affection for him derive. This sacred feeling is stronger than all other feelings, stronger because of its moral injunction: “This is how you should live, this is what you should be.” Awareness of this duty, as of every other connected with feelings, cannot be instilled by influencing the reason alone....

... To renounce the good things of life in order to fight for them together with those who are deprived of them, and to instil now a kind of asceticism in oneself. But my thoughts never leave me and I am sharing them with you. I am not an ascetic. It is just the dialectics of feelings, which springs from life itself and, it seems to me, from the life of the proletariat. And the point is that this dialectics should complete its cycle, so that it should contain the synthesis – the solution of contradictions. And so that this synthesis, being proletarian, should at the same time be “my” truth, the truth of “my” soul. One has to have the inner consciousness of the need to go to one’s death for the sake of life, to go to prison for the sake of freedom and to have the strength to go through all the hell of life with open eyes, feeling in one’s heart the great and exalted, paean of beauty, truth and happiness derived from that life....

February 17 (4), 1916

I love life as it really is, in its eternal movement, in its harmony, and in its terrible contradictions. And my eyes still see, my ears hear, my soul is receptive and my heart has not yet hardened. And the song of life sings in my heart.... And it seems to me that whoever hears this song in his heart will never curse his life, no matter what torments he has endured, will never exchange it for the other, peaceful, normal life. For this song is everything, this song of the love of life alone remains. Both here in prison, and out there in liberty, where there are now so many horrors, it lives and is eternal as the stars: the stars and all the beauty of nature give birth to it and carry it to human hearts, and these hearts sing out and strive eternally for resurrection....

To V. E. Dzerzhinsky [8]

September 11 (august 29), 1916.

... But in social life? I am entirely at one not only with my thoughts but with the masses, and together with them I must experience the struggle, the torment and the hopes. I have never lived with closed eyes, turned in on my own thoughts alone. I was never an idealist. I learned to know human hearts and it seemed to me that I felt every beat of those hearts.... I have lived in order to fulfil my mission and to be myself....

I must endure to the end all that I am destined to endure. It cannot be otherwise. And I am at peace. And although I do not know what awaits me ... my mind continues to draw pictures of the future which crown it all. I am, besides all else, an optimist

May 21, 1918

I am in the very thick of the struggle. The life of a soldier who knows no rest, for it is necessary to save our home. There is no time to think of my own people and myself. The work and the struggle are hellish. But in this struggle my heart remains alive, the same as before. All my time is one continual round of activity....

My thoughts force me to be merciless, and I have the firm win to follow my thoughts to the end...

The ring of enemies presses harder and harder round us, approaching the heart.... Each day forces us to resort to increasingly resolute measures. Now our greatest enemy faces us – stark famine. In order to get bread, it must be taken from those who have it and given to those who have none. The civil war must flare up on an unprecedented scale. I have been moved up to a position in the front line of fire and my will is to fight and to look with open eyes on all the danger of the grave situation and to be merciless myself....

August 29, 1918

...We are soldiers on active service. And I live by what stands ahead of me, for this demands the greatest attention and vigilance in order to win victory. My will is to win through and, although a smile is very rarely seen on my face, I am confident in the victory of the idea and the movement in which I live and work....

Here we have a dance of life and death – a moment of truly sanguinary struggle, titanic effort....

To A. E. Bulihak

April 15, 1919.

Today as before, love is everything for me. I hear and feel its song in my heart. This song calls to the struggle unbending will, to tireless work. And today my actions are determined only by the idea – the striving for justice. I am finding it difficult to write.... As a perpetual wanderer, I am always in motion, in the thick of the changes and of the creation of a new life.... I see the future, and I want and must take part in its creation – to be in the movement, like a stone hurled from a sling, until I reach the end – eternal rest. Have you ever thought what war in actual pictures is like? You have pushed aside pictures of human bodies torn by shells, of the wounded lying on the battlefield and the crows pecking out the eyes of men still living. You have pushed aside these terrible pictures which daily meet the eyes. You cannot understand A soldier of the revolution fighting so that there will be no more injustice on the earth, so that this war will not put millions upon millions of people at the mercy of the conquering rich. War is a horrible thing. The whole world of the rich has moved against us. The most unhappy, most ignorant people are the first to have risen up in defence of their rights – and they are repulsing the entire world....

. ..Wherever the scoundrel plants himself – in an office behind a green-baize desk or in a watchman’s hut – he will be discovered and brought before the court of the R[evolution] Tribunal, whose punitive hammer will fall with all the devastating might and anger of which it is capable, for there is no mercy for the deadly enemies of our revival. No circumstances will be taken into account when sentence is passed on people who take bribes. The sternest punishment awaits them.

At the same time, the Soviet Government calls on all honest citizens, in whom painful consciousness of the indelible shame and corrupting influence of bribes is alive, to give their in the seeking out and discovering bribe-taking scoundrels.

Be keen-eyed and vigilant! Proletarian hands should not and cannot be sullied by bribes!

From the Article "Waifs and the Vecheka" [9]

July 22, 1926.

I want to throw part of my own efforts and primarily the forces of the Vecheka to combat the problem of homeless children... Two considerations have prompted me to this conclusion. Firstly, this is a terrible calamity! For when you look at the children, you cannot fail to think – everything is for them! The fruits of the revolution are not for us, but for them. And yet, how many of them are crippled by the struggle and by want! It is necessary to rush at once to their rescue, as we would if we saw children drowning. The People’s Commissariat for Education cannot cope with the situation alone. Extensive assistance from the Soviet public is needed. A large committee must be set up under the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, with the immediate participation of the People’s Commissariat for Education, and including representatives from all departments and all organisations that can be useful in this work. I have already spoken to a few people. I would like to head the commission myself; I want the apparatus of the Vecheka to be actually included in the work. Here I am prompted by the second consideration: I think our apparatus is one of those that work most efficiently; it has branches everywhere. People reckon with it. They are rather afraid of it. And yet, even in such a thing as the salvation and provisioning of children, one meets with negligence and even pilfering! We are steadily going over to peace-time construction, and so the thought has struck me, why not use our militant apparatus to combat such a calamity as homelessness among children?...

From a Circular Letter to the Managements of Syndicates and Trusts and to Red Directors

June 19, 1924.

... One must not fear criticism, or gloss over shortcomings; on the contrary, it is necessary to help to make them known and to see nothing discreditable in doing so. Only he can be discredited who conceals his shortcomings, who is unwilling to fight against evils, that is, precisely the man who ought to be discredited. It is necessary to be able to see the truth and to imbibe it from the masses and from all who are taking part in production. There is nothing worse than self-praise and self-satisfaction. It is possible to go forward only when, step by step, evils are sought out and overcome. At the same time, an end must be put to our established practice of humouring the masses – the workers. It should be remembered that in our country the workers, like ourselves, are not yet cultured, that often their group interests outweigh the interests of the working class as a whole; often they do not sufficiently realise that only their own useful labour, the productivity of their labour, can create the communist state, maintain their Soviet power. Every economic manager should wage a struggle to win prestige, to win the confidence of the working masses, but the struggle for this confidence should on no account employ the instrument of demagogy, of humouring the masses, satisfying them to the detriment and at the expense of the state, of the interests of the alliance with the peasants, of parochial requirements. The path of demagogy is perhaps the most harmful path, lulling the masses, deflecting them from the main tasks of the working class in production, diminishing the sacrifices the working class has made and, in the final analysis, one which is harmful for our industry....
