Recognizing the value of their contribution to York University research, RAY student wages are set at a minimum rate of $16.25 per hour, which is above the top rate of other Work/Study university positions.

  • Rates for RAY positions and hours to be worked vary: details are available for each job posting on the Career Education and Development website .
  • RAY students are paid by their hiring department through York's payroll system.
  • Your employer must obtain a York employee number for you, keep track of your hours worked, and submit a payroll timesheet on your behalf every two weeks.

If you have any concerns about your pay, you will need to discuss these concerns with your employer. Student Financial Services does not pay students and cannot make adjustments to your pay.

By participating in the RAY program, you can receive financial assistance to meet your direct educational costs (tuition, mandatory fees, textbooks) and gain valuable research experience that will supplement your classroom learning. RAY will also give you a preview of the type of research that you might encounter in graduate school study. As a RAY student, you will get work experience that will help you in your post-graduation career and receive research mentoring from faculty members and senior/graduate students.

A RAY position can provide you with hands-on research experience while assisting faculty members with meaningful research support. Examples of quality research activities include:

  • research proposal development
  • literature searches, web research/surveys, archival searches
  • preparing subjects for interviews

  • interview transcriptions

  • If you are unable to honour your commitment, speak to your supervisor immediately and try to arrange a more workable schedule.
  • If you withdraw or drop to part-time status during the academic session, inform your employer immediately: you will no longer be eligible for the RAY program and will have to resign from your position.

Chips for america announces funding opportunity to expand u.s. semiconductor packaging, office of public affairs.

Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to seek applications for research and development (R&D) activities that will establish and accelerate domestic capacity for advanced packaging substrates and substrate materials, a key technology for manufacturing semiconductors. The CHIPS for America program anticipates approximately $300 million in funding innovation across multiple technologies ranging from semiconductor-based to glass and organics. This is the third NOFO released overall by CHIPS for America, and the first that is focused on R&D.

President Biden signed the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act into law on August 9, 2022. The Department of Commerce is overseeing $50 billion to revitalize the U.S. semiconductor industry and strengthen the country’s economic and national security. CHIPS for America R&D within the U.S. Department of Commerce is responsible for administering $11 billion to advance U.S. leadership in semiconductor R&D. CHIPS R&D is a critical part of President Biden’s agenda to support American innovation for decades to come.

Emerging applications like artificial intelligence, advanced telecommunications, biomedical devices, and autonomous vehicles require leap-ahead advances in microelectronics capabilities. Improving all aspects of system performance to support the breadth of new semiconductor applications will require advanced packaging. The path to advanced packaging starts with substrates, which are the foundations on which systems are built. More capable substrates open the door to innovation at every other level in the packaging process.

“CHIPS for America is delivering on its vision to make sure new leading-edge chip architectures can be invented in our research labs, designed for every end-use application, manufactured at scale, and packaged with the most advanced technologies. Within a decade, research and activities funded by this advanced packaging program, coupled with CHIPS manufacturing incentives, will establish a vibrant, self-sustaining, and resilient onshore packaging industry, helping ensure our country is a leader in advanced semiconductor manufacturing,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo .

“Materials and substrates are foundational to achieving the necessary advances in advanced packaging to ensure U.S. leadership in the global semiconductor ecosystem,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Director Laurie E. Locascio. “With this funding opportunity, we are taking the first step toward strengthening domestic advanced packaging approaches so that semiconductor manufacturers can access a full suite of U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities to bring their most innovative solutions to market.”

Funded activities are expected to include, but not necessarily be limited to, basic and applied research, substrate and demonstration device development and production, commercial viability and domestic manufacturing, integrated workforce education and training, and pilot-level substrate production.

CHIPS for America will provide a briefing on details of the NOFO on March 1, 2024, at 3 pm ET. Webinar participants must register in advance.

On March 12, 2024, CHIPS for America’s NAPMP Program will host a one-day meeting for potential applicants for this funding opportunity. For more information and to register for this event, please visit chips.gov .

About CHIPS for America

CHIPS for America is part of President Biden’s economic plan to invest in America, stimulate private sector investment, create good-paying jobs, make more in the United States, and revitalize communities left behind. CHIPS for America includes the CHIPS Program Office, responsible for manufacturing incentives, and the CHIPS Research and Development (R&D) Office, responsible for R&D programs. Both offices sit within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at the Department of Commerce. NIST promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST is uniquely positioned to successfully administer the CHIPS for America program because of the bureau’s strong relationships with U.S. industries, its deep understanding of the semiconductor ecosystem, and its reputation as fair and trusted. For women’s history month, a look at gender gains – and gaps – in the u.s..

For American women, job opportunities look much different than they did 50 years ago. Women have made gains in labor force participation and wages, and they’ve increased their presence in the highest-paying jobs. Some of that progress has stalled in recent years, however, and large gender gaps persist at the top levels of government and business leadership.

Ahead of Women’s History Month , here’s a look at some of these trends and data points, based on Pew Research Center surveys and analyses as well as federal data.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis ahead of Women’s History Month to better understand the gains women have experienced and the gaps that persist in the U.S. labor force, including in top government and business leadership positions.

Labor force data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. The civilian labor force includes those who are either employed or actively looking for work.

More information about the Center analyses and surveys, including their methodologies, can be found at the links in the text.

Women made up 47% of the U.S. civilian labor force in 2023, up from 30% in 1950 – but growth has stagnated, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows. The share of women in the labor force generally grew throughout the second half of the 20th century but has since leveled off.

The BLS projects that women will continue to make up  slightly less than half of the labor force through 2032.

A line chart showing that women make up nearly half of the labor force; share will remain steady over the next decade.

Women outnumber men in the U.S. college-educated workforce, now making up 51% of those ages 25 and older, according to Current Population Survey data from the fourth quarter of 2023. Women first surpassed men in the college-educated labor force in the fourth quarter of 2019 . They remained more than half of this group through the COVID-19 pandemic , which resulted in a sharp recession and an overall decline in the size of the nation’s labor force.

The gender shift in the college-educated labor force happened about four decades after  women overtook men  in the number of adults earning a bachelor’s degree each year.

A line chart showing that women now represent a majority of the college-educated labor force in the U.S.

About a third of workers in the country’s 10 highest-paying occupations (35%) are women – up from 13% in 1980, a November 2023 analysis of Census Bureau data shows. Women have increased their presence in almost all of these high-paying jobs. Workers in these occupations typically earn more than $100,000 a year and include physicians, lawyers and dentists.

Despite these gains, women are still the minority in nine of these jobs. Pharmacists are the exception: 61% are women. The share of women in the other nine occupations remains well below their share in the U.S. workforce overall.

A bar chart showing that, since 1980, women have increased their presence in most of the 10 highest-paying occupations in the U.S.

The share of women in opposite-sex marriages who earn as much as or more than their husband has roughly tripled over the past 50 years, according to a spring 2023 analysis of Census Bureau data . In 2022, women were the sole or primary breadwinner in 16% of opposite-sex marriages, up from 5% in 1972. Husbands and wives are roughly equal contributors in 29% of marriages today, compared with 11% in 1972.

Looked at another way, husbands were the breadwinner in 85% of marriages 50 years ago. That has dropped to 55% of marriages today.

A chart showing that husbands and wives have roughly equal earnings in a growing share of U.S. marriages.

The gender pay gap – the difference between the median earnings of men and women – has remained relatively flat in the United States over the past two decades, according to an analysis of hourly earnings of full- and part-time workers . In 2022, U.S. women typically earned 82 cents for every dollar men earned. That was about the same as in 2002, when women earned 80 cents to the dollar.

When asked about the factors that may play a role in the gender wage gap, half of U.S. adults point to employers treating women differently as a major reason, an October 2022 survey shows. Smaller shares point to women making different choices about how to balance work and family (42%) and working in jobs that pay less (34%).

Women are much more likely than men (61% vs. 37%) to say a major reason for the gap is that employers treat women differently.

A line chart showing that the gender pay gap in U.S. has not closed in recent years.

Women still lag in top leadership positions in business and government. Women have made inroads in a  wide range of leadership positions  in recent decades, but have not reached parity with their male counterparts in most cases. As of September 2023:

  • Federal and state legislators: 28% of U.S. congressional members and about a third of state legislators are women.
  • Governors: 8 Democratic and four Republican women serve as governors.
  • Presidential Cabinet: President Joe Biden’s Cabinet is a rare example of gender parity in government leadership. Of 25 Cabinet or Cabinet-level positions, 12 are held by women (48%).
  • Executive business leadership: 11% of Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, along with 30% of Fortune 500 board members.

Slim majorities of Americans say there are too few women in top political offices and executive business positions, a July 2023 survey shows . When it comes to the number of women elected to political office, 53% of adults say there are too few, 8% say there are too many, and 37% say it is about right. Views of women in business leadership are similar: 55% of adults say there are too few women in these roles, 6% say there are too many, and 37% say there are about the right number.

In both cases, Americans cite the same top reasons why there are fewer women than men in these roles: that women have to do more to prove themselves than men, and that women in each field face gender discrimination.

The public is divided over whether being a woman makes it more difficult to get ahead, according to an April 2023 survey . Half of Americans say that being a woman hurts a person’s ability to get ahead in the U.S., while 24% say it helps, and 25% say it neither helps nor hurts.

Women are more likely than men to say being a woman hurts one’s ability to get ahead in the U.S. (58% vs. 40%).

These divisions also exist in views of women’s standing in the workplace. A February 2023 survey found that 28% of employed adults say that being a woman makes it a little or a lot harder to be successful where they work, while just 11% say it makes things easier. Another 49% say being a woman makes things neither easier nor harder.

Women are more likely than men to say that being a woman makes it at least a little harder to be successful in their workplace (34% vs. 21%).

About half of America's new college graduates are working in high school-level jobs like food service and retail: report

  • Nearly half of new college graduates in the US are working high school-level jobs, per new research.
  • Around 52% of recent graduates start their careers in jobs that don't need a degree, it said.
  • Most of these underemployed graduates work in food services, construction, and office administration.

Insider Today

Within a year of graduating, about 52% of people who recently earned bachelor's degrees in the US are working jobs that don't require a college education, according to a new joint report by two research firms.

The vast majority of underemployed graduates — 88% of them — are working high school-level jobs such as office support, food service, and retail within five years of graduation, per the report by the data research firms Burning Glass Institute and the Strada Education Foundation.

The report, published on Thursday, was based on a dataset of 60 million people's careers in the US, including those of 10.8 million people with a bachelor's degree.

Its findings present a bleak outlook for new graduates hoping that a degree will guarantee them significantly better opportunities.

While college graduates typically earn more than those with only a high-school education, "a sizable share of graduates do not experience the economic outcome they expected from earning a bachelor's degree," the report said.

The difference in pay is significant. Underemployed graduates earn about 25% more than workers with only a high school diploma.

But that's far less than they would make if they had found a job that requires a degree. People working college-level jobs earn 88% more than those with only a high school education, the report said.

That means that the typical graduate working a college-level job earns around 50% more than an underemployed graduate, it added.

Most underemployed graduates are in sales and office administration

For graduates working high school-level jobs five years after finishing college, the most common occupations are clerk (1.09 million graduates), sales supervisor (1 million), retail sales worker (759,000), salesperson (611,000), and secretary (602,000).

Additionally, 370,000 of these graduates work in food and beverage services, while another 350,000 work in construction, per the report. At least 4.5 million more graduates work other types of high school-level jobs.

What you studied also matters, the researchers said. They found that fields requiring quantitative reasoning, such as engineering (26%), finance and accounting (29%), and computer science (36%), had the lowest five-year underemployment rates.

Health-related work, including nursing, had the lowest underemployment rate, with only 23% of graduates not working college-level jobs five years after finishing their bachelor's.

Conversely, public safety and security (68%), recreation and wellness studies (60%), and marketing and business management (57%) had the highest five-year underemployment rates in the US.

It's hard to get out of underemployment

If a graduate starts their career underemployed, they're also 3.5 times more likely to stay underemployed 10 years later, the report added.

"The first job following college graduation is critically important for most individuals," the researchers wrote.

About 27% of underemployed graduates eventually advance to college-level jobs in the next 10 years. But for every 100 graduates, 45 will still be underemployed a decade after earning their degrees, the report said.

On the other hand, around 21% of graduates who start their careers in a college-level job eventually fall into underemployment by the 10-year mark.

Getting an internship in your field of study vastly improves your chances of getting a college-level job, the report said.

Those with internships before graduating had a 48.5% lower chance of being underemployed in their first year of working, researchers said.

But only 29% of college graduates secure a paid internship before they finish school, the report said, urging policymakers and universities to push students toward such opportunities.

Paid internships, they wrote, "offer a proven route to college-level employment."

The researchers also encouraged schools to provide personalized career coaching, which they said is increasingly showing itself to be useful for students.

"Students deserve to understand what steps they can take to reduce underemployment risk," the report said.

However, the current ratio of students to career services staff at US colleges is 1 to 2,263, the report added.
