Online Learning

at Harvard Extension School

Deep learning springs from human connection. That’s why we work so hard to bring people together. Our approach to online learning fosters interaction without sacrificing flexibility.

In our online courses, you engage with your instructor, participate in peer discussions, and receive one-on-one support from teaching staff—all from your home or office.

Our online courses are collaborative and experiential

The Online Course Experience

Members of our Teaching and Learning team, along with instructor Sergio Imparato, discuss the HES philosophy of “human-centered learning done online” — and how we foster interaction without sacrificing flexibility.

HELIX: Harvard Extension Live Interactive eXperience

To support active learning, we created a platform called the Helix classrooms and web conferences . The technology brings together students from around the globe to join an instructor in a live classroom.

Helix classrooms and web conferences are “hyflex” — a combination of hybrid and flexible formats.

  • Students may join professors live in the classroom
  • Live online students join the class through Zoom displayed on large monitors and seamlessly interact with students in the classroom
  • On-demand students watch professional recordings of the class on their own schedule and interact through online discussion tools
  • Students participate in thoughtful discussion with their peers and engage with their instructor in real time

Benefits of Online Learning

Online education is fundamentally changing the paradigm of higher education. At Harvard Extension School, we think about online learning a little differently:

  • People are at the core of every interaction—we’re connecting people for a shared learning experience
  • Our courses respect the full lives and varied preferences of adult, part-time learners
  • You receive personal, individualized feedback on your work
  • You will be part of a strong community of learners
  • Iterative course design keeps courses fresh and relevant for students and instructors
  • Everyone has the opportunity to earn credit in rigorous, Harvard-quality courses
Education is about being vulnerable. It’s about being unsettled, unnerved, unhoused – being open to that which you are not used to. To have to de-familiarize yourself to ways of being in the world – Harvard Extension is magnificent in that regard. Cornel West

Distance Education Trailblazers for Over 110 Years

Harvard Extension School believes learners should be at the helm of their own education, while instructors act as mediators who introduce ideas, ask questions, and encourage students to explore new ways of thinking on their own. Online courses present a rich opportunity for this kind of teaching and learning.

As an early adopter and national leader in distance education, we are perfectly positioned to offer an outstanding, world-class academic experience online, with no compromise on quality.

Harvard Division of Continuing Education

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at Harvard University is dedicated to bringing rigorous academics and innovative teaching capabilities to those seeking to improve their lives through education. We make Harvard education accessible to lifelong learners from high school to retirement.

programs for continuing education

Are you ready to earn your online nursing degree?

Once you've earned your nursing degree and passed the National Council Licensure Exam, you're not in the clear as far as education goes. Nursing is a constantly changing profession and as a nurse, you must be a lifelong learner to ensure your patients receive the best care. For this reason, most states require continuing education (CE) to maintain your nursing license, ensuring that you stay up to date with nursing best practices.

Explore continuing education requirements for nurses, different types of continuing education, and how to pay for or find free continuing education courses for nurses.

Continuing Education in Nursing Explained

To qualify as continuing education for nurses , CE must be designed and delivered by qualified organizations. You can find CE opportunities through professional nursing associations , nursing schools, course directories, or peer-reviewed publications. The right CE for you depends on your work focus and career goals.

Once you find an opportunity that interests you, register and attend the course or conference. If you are completing a reading of a peer-reviewed article, be prepared to take a test at the end. Other providers may document your attendance. Keep track of your hours to report.

Most states require CE to maintain your license, but the hours vary. Some states also require CE in specific topics. Check with your state board of nursing to find the continuing education requirements for nurses in your state.

Why Continuing Education Is Important for Nurses

CE ensures that you understand and apply the latest developments in nursing care. It can also protect healthcare institutions from legal liability. Additionally, CE may help you develop your skills for your next career move.

Continuing education courses for nurses cover the same range of topics you'd find in nursing school, including medicine, health promotion, communication and leadership, and legal and ethical aspects of nursing. Whatever your position, CE can help develop your expertise.

Types of Continuing Education

  • Annual healthcare employee requirements
  • State-mandated nurse CE
  • Professional development activities

Continuing Education Formats

  • Conferences
  • Live classes
  • Online classes
  • Online and live webinars
  • Self-study educational packets

The institute for johns hopkins nursing courses, nurseceu.com, paying for ce.

Continuing education prices range from free to several hundred dollars. Many employers pay or share the cost of continuing education for nurses. Some large hospitals, especially academic medical centers, may themselves be education providers or subscribe to services that deliver online CE for nurses. Others reimburse expenses. If your employer doesn't pay for CE, many nursing associations and other nonprofits provide nursing scholarships .

Alternative Ways to Fulfill Continuing Education Requirements

Many professional conferences can meet continuing education requirements for nurses. Be sure to check the conference listing to see how many hours of credit it offers and how to document it. You can also read professional literature and pass a test. Again, be sure to check that passing the test qualifies as CE.

CEU Accreditation

Like nursing school accreditation, CEU accreditation confirms that continuing education courses for nurses provide reliable evidence-based information and are delivered in an appropriate format. You can find accredited programs from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or through a provider you know, such as a professional association, and checking which courses meet continuing education requirements for nurses.

Nursing Continuing Education Requirements by State

Each state holds different continuing education requirements for nurses. Below describes the number of contact hours each state requires for continued licensing. Many states include additional requirements or accept alternate forms of education, such as a refresher course. Check your state board of nursing for specifics.

Program for Continuing Education

The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education (PCE) was established in 1973 to provide need-based grants to women in the U.S. and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to complete a degree or certification that will improve their marketable skills for employment to support themselves and/or their families. The maximum grant amount is $4,000.

Funding Grants Today for A Brighter Tomorrow

Since 1973, we've been helping women of various ages in the U.S. and Canada with need-based grants. If your education was interrupted and you need to return to school to enhance your job skills or care for your family, we're here for you!

At the heart of every success story lies a support system that believes in your potential. With a clear focus on need-based grants, the Program for Continuing Education (PCE) stands as a beacon of hope, providing a pathway for women whose educational journeys might have been put on hold.

Life's unpredictable twists and turns can sometimes disrupt educational pursuits, but that doesn't mean those dreams have to fade away. P.E.O. understands the unique challenges that women face, and we're here to say that your aspirations matter, no matter your age or circumstances.

The Program for Continuing Education can help make dreams a reality.

Be Part of the Ripple Effect

Supporting women's education has a ripple effect, positively impacting their lives, their children's lives, and the broader community. The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education plays a vital role in empowering women and creating a brighter tomorrow.

These grants are more than just financial assistance. They symbolize the collective belief in your potential to make a positive impact on your life, your family and your community. With PCE, you're not just receiving funding, you're gaining the tools to transform your future.

We understand that supporting a woman's education has effects that extend far beyond the classroom. When we help a woman achieve her educational goals, we're also contributing to stronger families, more vibrant communities and a more inclusive society. Education is not just an individual endeavor—it's a force for change that can uplift everyone around us.

Make a Meaningful Impact

With Named and Endowed Grants, individuals, families and chapters can make special gifts to support the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education. These grants can be named in honor or memory of someone special.

Individual Named Grants – provide a one-time grant to a student from an individual.

Named Grant Chapters – provide a one-time grant to a student from a chapter or group of chapters. PCE Named Grants funded exclusively through chapter donations received during the local fiscal year (March 1 through February 28/29) will receive special recognition at s/p/d conventions.

*As of February 14, 2024, the amount needed to be designated as a PCE Named Grant is $4,000.

Endowed Named Grants – PCE Endowed Named Grants are generated by special funds held in the P.E.O. Foundation. The principle for each PCE designated endowed fund provides the interest for the funding of the grant.

Online guidance counseling degree: accredited programs and admission requirements.

Woman working on computer at her home office

As you consider earning a school counseling degree, give serious consideration to online master's programs. In addition to the experience and expertise you'll gain, online guidance counseling programs provide flexibility and convenience : You can advance your educational journey and career readiness on your schedule, studying from anywhere, while keeping your current job. When you look for online school counseling degree programs, you’re not limited by geographic location. Researching different programs will help you select one that gives you the best value for your investment and is the strongest match for your needs.

This post will explore online guidance counseling degree programs, including the role of accreditation in career outcomes and common admission requirements.

The Importance of Program Accreditation

Accreditation is a quality-control measure for counseling education programs. Accrediting bodies examine a program's curriculum, faculty qualifications, institutional support and student resources to determine if it adheres to high industry standards. 1 A degree from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for professional licensure. You’ll have professional recognition and credibility that comes from receiving a quality education that meets the established standards of the profession. 2

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredits master’s and doctoral degree programs in counseling and other specialties that are offered by colleges and universities in the United States and throughout the world. 1 Other accrediting bodies include the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC), which accredits advanced academic programs in psychology and counseling, 3 and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), which accredits graduate programs that provide comprehensive training in both psychology and education. 4

Choosing the Right Online Program

In addition to accreditation, there are other factors you should consider when deciding on an online counseling program. The faculty will have a significant impact on your experience. Look for programs with faculty who are experts in their fields and who will mentor and guide you through the master’s program and the licensure process.

You should also consider the faculty-to-student ratio, the specialties and/or concentrations the program offers , scholarships or financial aid opportunities and the amount of time it will take to complete the program. You can discover a lot of this information by visiting the universities’ websites and comparing programs based on your highest-priority factors. 5

Admission Requirements for Online Counseling Programs

The admission process and requirements for an online counseling program can vary depending on the school, but you can expect to submit the following:

  • A completed online application
  • An application fee
  • Official academic transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional and academic references
  • A personal essay detailing the reasons for your interest in the program, the strengths you bring to it, the challenges you foresee experiencing in it, and the ways in which the program will help you reach your professional goals
  • A resume detailing your full employment history

Application Process and Timelines

When you apply to a program, you’ll be notified of the application deadline. The program may have several deadlines, such as a priority deadline and a final deadline for you to complete the application. You’ll also be informed of when the acceptance decisions will be released.

While the durations of online programs vary, 6 you can complete the William & Mary Online M.Ed. in Counseling with a concentration in School Counseling in as few as three years. In addition to coursework, you’ll complete an internship and a supervised practicum. The program is offered on a part-time basis so you can continue working while earning the degree, although you may carry a full-time load during your internship and practicum.

Curriculum Requirements and Course Structure

The course structure and exact curriculum will depend on the program. All accredited programs will provide a well-rounded foundation in counseling; the concentration in school counseling will include specialized courses. 7

Foundational, core courses will provide a broad understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of counseling practice. These include various counseling theories , such as psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic and multicultural counseling. Courses in human growth and development focus on the psychological, social and physical development of individuals throughout their lifespan. 7 You’ll also study the legal considerations and ethical standards relevant to the counseling profession , including confidentiality, professional conduct and ethical decision-making.

According to the American School Counselor Association, most American public school systems require that their guidance counselors have advanced-degree education in the following areas: 8

  • Human growth and development
  • Individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Social and cultural foundations
  • Testing/appraisal
  • Research and program evaluation
  • Professional orientation
  • Career development
  • Supervised practicum
  • Supervised internship

Courses in the School Counseling concentration will cover theories and strategies for counseling students in elementary and secondary schools. They'll also address topics such as substance abuse, prevention and intervention, and other advanced issues in professional school counseling. 8 Coursework and the practicum and internship experiences will prepare you to help students with academic planning, career exploration and decision-making. Most importantly for students in crisis, you’ll be equipped to provide social-emotional support , address behavioral concerns and collaborate in creating a positive school climate.

Graduation and Licensure Preparation

Licensure is a requirement to work as a guidance counselor. Each state has its own requirements and procedures, but an online guidance counseling degree should prepare you to become certified. In addition to earning a master’s degree in counseling, you’ll need to complete the following: 8

Supervised Clinical Experience

Postgraduate supervised clinical experience is a common requirement for licensure. The number of required hours varies by state.

Licensing Examinations

Most states require you to pass a licensing examination to confirm your counseling skills and knowledge. The National Counselor Examination (NCE) and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) are common exams.

License Application

After you meet the educational and experiential requirements and pass the necessary exams, you can apply for licensure with your state's counseling board. This process usually involves submitting examination scores and proof of education and experience, and completing any additional state-specific requirements.

Continuing Education

Licensed school counselors are required to engage in continuing education in order to maintain licensure. This will help you stay updated with the latest developments in the field.

Duke Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education

Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies are now ‘Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education’

Yakut Gazi’s appointment as Duke University’s inaugural Vice Provost for Learning Innovation and Digital Education in 2022 marked the beginning of a major transformation for both Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies. For the past year and a half, both teams have been reimagining their future as a combined unit, and that future is finally here: Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies have officially merged under the new name Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education (LILE).

Duke Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education logo

Together, we bring innovative, evidence-based teaching practices and learning opportunities to Duke’s faculty and community of learners across a wide variety of ages, backgrounds, and geographies.

“Our new name is our next big step forward as one organization, serving lifetime learners in innovative ways around the world through intelligent use of learning science and technologies,” said Yakut Gazi, Vice Provost for Learning Innovation and Digital Education. “The professional, continuing, and online space within higher education is changing rapidly, and this name positions us to be flexible and forward-looking to meet the evolving needs of learners, from pre-college through post-career.”

Previously, both Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies were working towards similar yet parallel goals of serving learners: Learning Innovation’s efforts focused primarily on undergraduate and graduate students (with the exception of its online offerings available to global learners), while Continuing Studies worked with learners before and after the traditional university experience, from pre-college to post-career.

As Gazi has previously written , people are living longer lives, which has sociological, societal and personal implications. In order for people to survive and thrive in their longer lives and longer careers, they will need multiple opportunities to learn and upskill, so institutions of higher education need to be planning for a 60-year curriculum. Now, as a united organization, LILE can support learners no matter where they are in their learning journey, which we envision as a continuum along which learners may enter and exit at varying times:

Graphic showing how learners may flow in and out of different stages along their learning journey from pre-college to undergrad/grad to professional to post-career.

This next chapter also allows us to focus on other learners of all ages, around the world, through partnerships with Duke Alumni Engagement and Development (AED) and Duke Kunshan University (DKU). With each unit, we share an Assistant Vice Provost (AVP) position, allowing easier collaboration in these shared focus areas.

For those who have previously engaged with either Learning Innovation or Continuing Studies, we are pleased to share that none of our former services or programs are going away. They may evolve as the landscape of lifetime education and learners’ needs change, but we will continue to serve Duke faculty, students, staff, alumni, and our global community of lifetime learners by:

  • Increasing teaching and learning effectiveness through a culture of data-informed and research-driven educational innovation.
  • Growing the community of Duke learners by creating in-demand educational programs and services.
  • Broadening access to Duke learning opportunities for all through inclusive pathways to learn for all types of learners – anywhere, at any age.
  • Being a trusted partner to our people, programs, and partners.

Information about our organizational activities and instructor-facing materials are available at learninginnovation.duke.edu , while our catalog of continuing studies programs can be found at learnmore.duke.edu .

IR-2024-59, March 4, 2024

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that registration for the agency’s 2024 Nationwide Tax Forum is now open, providing tax professionals the opportunity to attend special continuing education sessions this summer in five cities across the nation.

For more than 30 years, the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum has provided a unique setting for the tax professional community to gather and learn about important developments. In 2023, nearly 12,000 tax professionals attended the program.

The IRS-sponsored event offers continuing education and networking opportunities to enrolled agents, certified public accountants, attorneys and other tax professionals. Each forum is a three-day event with more than 40 seminars and workshops on a wide variety of federal and state tax issues presented by experts from the IRS and its partner associations. Attendees may earn up to 18 continuing education credits.

In addition to learning about the latest developments in tax law and other issues affecting the tax community, attendees will also have a chance to meet in-person with IRS hiring experts. The IRS looks to hire talented people in the tax community and other industries as the agency continues the historic transformation work under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Each tax forum runs from Tuesday through Thursday, with special pre-event sessions taking place on the Monday afternoon before.

Featured cities: Chicago, Orlando, Baltimore, Dallas, San Diego

The forum begins this year in Chicago and wraps up two months later in San Diego.

Specific cities and dates are:

The IRS encourages tax pros to register early both the conference sessions and forum hotels. Each year, the IRS sees instances where the conference or sponsoring hotel fills up.

In addition to continuing professional education seminars from IRS and tax industry leaders, forum attendees get access to:

  • The popular case resolution room, where tax pros can take their toughest cases to get help from the IRS.
  • The forum expo hall, where they can see the latest technology and products and meet with dozens of industry representatives, association partners and IRS staff.
  • A special Monday evening session on practice management to help tax pros run their business.
  • The Annual Filing Season Program refresher course, also presented on Monday, for unenrolled tax preparers who participate in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program.
  • Special focus group sessions, where tax professionals can share their experiences and discuss innovative ideas.
  • Meet and ask questions with leaders from IRS and the tax professional community and network with other tax pros.
