Guidelines for five-year phd direct-entry programs, introduction.

The School of Graduate Studies allows admission directly into a PhD program on the basis of an appropriate University of Toronto bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent from a recognized university, when the five-year PhD program is approved through University governance and offered by the graduate unit. Applicants are expected to be of exceptional promise and demonstrate superior academic performance.

1. Admission Requirements

Where a graduate unit allows direct entry from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD program, the academic requirements for admission will be as follows:

A . an appropriate U of T bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent from a recognized university, with at least an A-minus average in courses in the relevant discipline;

B . demonstration that the applicant is capable of independent research at an advanced level in the subject matter of the relevant program;

C . at least two strong supporting letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s research potential; and

D . other qualifications as may be specified by the graduate unit.

To be admitted as a candidate for the degree, the applicant must be accepted by the Admission Committee of the relevant graduate unit. A candidate accepted on the basis of a bachelor’s degree will be admitted to a five-year PhD program with a seven-year time limit for completion of all requirements for the degree.

Note: In certain circumstances, an applicant with a master’s degree might be admitted to a five-year program, as well: If the applicant has a master’s degree in a different field of study, or if the applicant hasa master’s degree in the same field of study but is judged to require significant additional preparation, he or she would normally be admitted to a five-year program.

2. Program Requirements

When a graduate unit allows direct entry from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD program, the graduate unit will specify the program requirements for such students. The program requirements for a PhD candidate who enters the PhD program on the basis of a bachelor’s degree should include a substantial portion of the requirements for a master’s degree in the relevant discipline (about two sessions of master’s degree level program requirements), together with the program requirements for a PhD candidate who enters the PhD program on the basis of a master’s degree. A graduate unit may require certain direct entry students to complete additional requirements beyond the normal ones when the graduate unit assesses their backgrounds as deficient in some area.

Graduate units will closely monitor the progress of direct entry students during the first year of the PhD program. They should, in particular, specify a minimum number of courses to be completed during the first year of the program, together with an acceptable minimum grade or average for those courses, in order for those students to maintain good academic standing and to be eligible to continue in the PhD program.

Note: Transfers from the Five-Year PhD Program to the Master’s Program

Students registered in the five-year PhD program are eligible to transfer to the master’s program under certain circumstances. See section 2 of “Transfers” (“PhD to Masters”), under the Degree Regulations for the Doctor of Philosophy, in the SGS Calendar .

Once you have decided to apply to a PhD programme in Canada, you can use degree databases to find which university offers PhDs in your area of interest, such as  Universities Canada or provincial bodies such as Education Planner BC . Search engines or other global commercial degree directories may also help you identify a suitable programme.

Alternatively, you could search for which faculty members conduct research in your area via publication databases and then look up the universities where they teach.

If you already know which university you are most interested in, you should look at both its departmental/programme web pages and the pages of a central graduate school if applicable.

Unlike at undergraduate level, where you can apply via a central application system, application to graduate programmes is usually targeted to each programme, which can vary across institutions.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a PhD ?

We recommend that applicants check the admissions requirements for their programme of interest.

In terms of qualities admission committees may be looking for, these will vary by subject area – for example graduate programmes in natural sciences may look for different attributes from those in the performing arts. 

Graduate students in Canada are usually expected to work independently and be self-directed. As such, applicants may want to provide evidence of how they have taken initiative and shown self-direction and perseverance. Passion, curiosity, focus, commitment, collegiality and enthusiasm are all qualities that applicants may find mentioned on programme websites.

How do I look for a PhD supervisor?

The first step would be to check with your programme of interest to see if contact with a supervisor is encouraged or required. Processes vary and some programmes assign you supervisors based on interests identified in your application, some require commitment from a supervisor prior to the application, and some may determine supervisors after some initial coursework or rotations.

If a programme requires you to contact potential supervisors, begin by researching faculty members and their research topics. Most universities, including the University of British Columbia  (UBC), have a research supervisor database where prospective students can search faculty. 

Candidates should read recent papers by potential supervisors and look for a good match between their own interests and those of the faculty member. Reading graduate student stories can also help, as applicants will be able to see current research projects students are working on, and get a sense of the faculty or programme they are looking into.

Once you have found a faculty member you would like to work with, you can reach out to them individually. Prospective students should be aware that academics often receive many such requests every week. Plan carefully who to contact and customise each message to the particular faculty member, explaining your research interests and why you are interested in working with them.

How should I write my research proposal?

Your research proposal is a crucial part of your application. It gives a sense of how prepared you are to conduct research and what directions of research you’re likely to pursue. A specific proposal is more likely to impress than some general ideas.

Your research areas and interests may change once you have entered your programme, so you will not be held to the ideas you’ve proposed. However, it gives prospective supervisors a sense of how your research aligns with theirs and that of the department in general.

Be sure to stay within the word count requested, and of course it’s essential you avoid any spelling or grammatical errors. We always recommend that applicants write several iterations of their research proposal and gain feedback from friends, colleagues and, if possible, professors at each stage. When you approach previous professors for a letter of reference, it’s worth sharing your proposal to get their feedback on it.

When should I start applying?

Applicants need to meet the application deadlines, which are often a year or more in advance of the desired start date (eg apply in December to start the following September). On top of that it is important to allocate enough time to prepare and complete various steps to be able to submit a completed application in time.

International applicants will need to ensure there is enough time to take the required English language tests. Applicants should also check if they have to complete any other courses before applying and that they have enough time to collect the necessary documentation and proofread everything. 

We recommend that prospective students review application timelines for their programme of interest and then plan backwards, ensuring they have time to complete all aspects of the application. All the steps may take longer than expected, so give yourself extra time to compile the strongest possible application.

How long will the application process take?

This will depend on each university, programme and sometimes supervisor. Once you have applied, the process will probably take a further two to three months at least. At UBC, many graduate programmes close applications in December and January, with offers being made February to April as a rough guideline. Depending on subject area, applications can close as late as April or May for a September start though.

What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be: 

• Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
• Reference letters 
• Statement of interest/research statement
• English language test scores
• Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants. 

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

Deciding to go to graduate school is a big decision and often a difficult one if you do not have a clear understanding of what it will be like. It is important to go to graduate school for the right reasons, including:

• Being interested in a given field.
• Desiring to be part of an intellectual or professional community.
• Gaining qualifications for career progression.
• Acquiring expertise to change sector or professional area.
• Gaining experience and entry requirements for an academic career.

Also, it is important to think about where you would like to study. Location and lifestyle can make a significant difference. Think about how this will affect your life, and importantly, is it a place where you could live in the future?

Regarding being successful in the process, preparation is key. Most universities provide a lot of information on their websites about the process and how to prepare strong applications. Make use of these resources, take the time to read the advice and treat the application itself as an opportunity to show that you possess key qualities faculty members are looking for, such as paying attention to detail, and writing ability.

This section of the Graduate Studies Academic Calendar includes minimum requirements for the PhD degree:

The required period of enrolment for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is six terms from the completion of a Master's degree, or nine terms from the completion of an Honours Bachelor's degree. The actual time taken to satisfy the degree requirements may be considerably longer. For information on required full-time attendance at the University refer to the Definitions - students section . The acceptance of the transfer of credits for prior enrolment at another university will be determined in individual cases by the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) of the Faculty at the time of admission to the program.

Completion of PhD degree requirements

The requirements for the degree must be completed within the time periods stipulated by the Senate of the University. A maximum of 18.0 terms from an Honours Bachelor's degree or its equivalent, 12.0 terms from a Master's degree or its equivalent, and 15.0 terms from a Master's degree or its equivalent for the PhD in Clinical Psychology. Students must petition the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies to continue their enrolment beyond these limits. Progress of students who have been granted extensions will be reviewed every term. Students whose work does not measure up to the standards of their program may be required to withdraw from the program. Such students may be readmitted although there will be a limit on the time-span in which readmission may occur.

Candidates must remain continuously enrolled at the University to the end of the term in which they complete the degree requirements. For additional information, see the Continuous enrolment section of the Enrolment and time limits page .

The PhD degree is granted by the University to candidates who have demonstrated both achievement in independent research in a particular field and a broad knowledge of that field.

The first requirement is satisfied when candidates have demonstrated a broad knowledge of their field to the satisfaction of the Faculty, normally by the successful completion of an assigned program of courses and the passing of a comprehensive examination, as determined by the department in which they are enrolled.

The second requirement is satisfied when candidates have presented and defended a thesis embodying the results of their own original research on an approved topic.

Comprehensive examination

PhD programs, except those noted here, require doctoral students to successfully complete a comprehensive exam as part of their academic requirements. In some cases, students may be required to successfully complete a series of exams in order to satisfy the comprehensive requirement.   

The purpose of this document is to provide University-level guidance to students, supervisors and Departments / Schools (referred to as Departments in this document) on comprehensive exams. This document also presents links to Faculty level guidelines that are consistent with the principles established here. Links to Departments’ guidelines are available on the Faculty pages.   

Comprehensive examination purpose

Comprehensive exams serve multiple purposes depending on the discipline. Permitted purposes for comprehensive exams at the University of Waterloo include demonstrating that:  

• PhD students have the appropriate academic background – a foundation and breadth of knowledge in the field of study – to be successful in their PhD program;
• PhD students have the capacity to engage in scholarly communications – both oral and written – necessary to be successful in their PhD studies;
• PhD students have developed a novel research topic to be evaluated during their PhD studies.

The purpose(s) of the exam shall be communicated clearly to students.  

Comprehensive examination timing

The comprehensive exam is an important accomplishment in the completion of students’ PhD program. Normally, completing the comprehensive exam allows students to advance to the research or dissertation phase of their studies. The timing of the exam should allow sufficient time for students to achieve the foundational knowledge to be successful in their programs. The exam timing should allow for timely feedback to students on their progress and should motivate appropriate times to completion. To balance these two objectives, the University requires that:

• Students with no previous studies at the PhD level successfully complete the comprehensive exam not later than the end of their seventh term of studies;  
• Students who have completed previous studies in another PhD program at the University of Waterloo or at another university, successfully complete the comprehensive exam not later than their fourth term of studies in their current program or their seventh term of study at the PhD level, whichever is longer.  

Earlier deadlines are at the discretion of the Faculty, Department or Program level.  

A student who anticipates not meeting these requirements (up to the final evaluation of the exam) may seek an extension to the deadline to complete the comprehensive exam. The student is required to submit a petition providing evidence of extenuating circumstances to the student’s Associate Dean, Graduate Studies.   

Valid extenuating circumstances are normally limited to issues related to the student’s (or student’s immediate family’s) health or documented incidents involving graduate student supervision that can be demonstrated to have delayed the student’s progress. The conduct of research or other projects is not considered a valid extenuating circumstance to delay beyond the normal comprehensive examination completion deadline. Guidance on seeking accommodation due to health reasons shall be managed by the University’s AccessAbility Services .  

If the petition is granted, the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies shall coordinate with the student’s Graduate Officer to establish a new deadline by which the comprehensive exam shall be completed. This deadline shall be communicated to the student in the notice of decision on the petition.

If no petition has been previously adjudicated, and a student fails to meet these requirements by the end of the seventh term, the student’s academic status will be changed to Required to Withdraw. Students may seek to have their standing changed to allow them to continue in their programs by submitting a petition under Policy 70 to the student’s Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, not later than 10 business days from the change of status. The petition rules described in this section apply.

Comprehensive examinations and students’ academic requirements

A student is encouraged to communicate with supervisor(s) and / or instructors regarding the need to balance the student’s effort toward preparing for and completing the comprehensive exam, and any other academic requirements in the term during which the comprehensive exam takes place. Additional guidance for students serving as a TA are outlined in Policy 30.    

In cases where agreement cannot be reached on revised expectations, the Department’s Graduate Officer shall determine and communicate the revised expectations, if any, to the student and the supervisor / instructor.

Comprehensive Examining Committee

In many cases a student’s comprehensive exam written and / or oral components are evaluated by an examining committee constituted for a given student. These rules govern the composition of these examining committees.

The comprehensive examining committee shall engage those who can advance the purpose(s) of the exam. The University requires that the committee includes at least three examiners who:

• Hold a PhD or equivalent degree (as determined by the Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs),  
• Two of whom are not the student’s supervisor(s),
• At least one of whom is a tenured or tenure-track member of the student’s Department or School, and
• At least two of whom hold regular faculty appointments at the University of Waterloo.

Additional committee members may be required at the discretion of the Faculty, Department or Program. When examining committee members are external to the University of Waterloo, their purpose in the exam process shall be clearly communicated to the student.

Normally, the examining committee will not exceed five examiners.

The comprehensive exam shall be Chaired by a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at the University of Waterloo with Approved Doctoral Dissertation Supervision (ADDS) status, normally from the student’s home Department / School, who is not the student’s supervisor or co-supervisor. The Chair’s role is at a minimum to ensure that this portion of the exam is conducted in a manner that is consistent with appropriate guidelines. The Chair is a non-voting member of the comprehensive examining committee.

The composition of the comprehensive examining committee will be approved by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies for the student’s Faculty, or delegate.  

The method by which the comprehensive examining committee is constituted and the timing of the examining committee formation shall be clearly articulated and communicated to students.

Comprehensive examination format and content

The format and content of the comprehensive exam shall be directly related to the stated purpose(s) of the exam. These elements shall be clearly articulated and communicated to students to ensure transparency and clarity of expectations. If a student in a program perceives a lack of clarity on these issues, these concerns should immediately be communicated to the student’s Department’s Graduate Officer.  

Students may warrant an accommodation to allow for an alternative exam format other than the norm as described by a Faculty or Department. For accommodations related to health, the student shall provide supporting medical documentation to the University’s AccessAbility Services where the request will be vetted. As a result of that evaluation, AccessAbility Services shall determine whether an accommodation is warranted. When an accommodation is determined appropriate, AccessAbility Services shall communicate the decision and the nature of the accommodation to the Graduate Officer in the student’s home Department.

Requests for accommodation not related to health issues shall be made by students to the Graduate Officer in the student’s home department, who will coordinate the process by which the request for accommodation will be advanced.

Outcomes of the comprehensive examination

This section defines permitted outcomes of comprehensive exams at the University of Waterloo. On a candidate’s first attempt at the comprehensive exam, the outcome shall be one of:

• Passed: the candidate successfully completed all requirements of the exam;
• Be communicated to the student in writing;
• Contain the date by which the conditions must be satisfied;
• Identify the member(s) of the examining committee responsible for determining that the conditions have been met. Normally, this determination will be made by at least one member of the committee other than the student’s supervisor or cosupervisors. Failure to satisfy the conditions within the designated time limit shall result in an outcome of Re-examination.
• Re-examination: the candidate will be required to repeat the exam. In this case, the student shall be provided written communication that identifies the deficiencies in the exam that led to this outcome and the deadline by which the re-examination must take place. In the case of re-examination it is anticipated that the committee membership will be the same as the initial committee. Any change in membership must adhere to committee guidelines and be approved by the student’s Associate Dean Graduate Studies or delegate.

When a candidate is re-examined, the outcomes are limited to:

• Exam Unsuccessful: the candidate will be deemed to have failed to satisfy the program’s comprehensive exam requirement. In this case, the student shall receive written communication identifying the deficiencies in the exam that led to this outcome.    

A student who is deemed to have failed to satisfy the comprehensive exam requirement (Exam Unsuccessful) may not continue in the current PhD program. The student’s status will change to Required to Withdraw in the term immediately following the term in which the examination took place. The student may seek admission to another PhD program or to any Master’s degree program at the University of Waterloo.  

The outcome of the exam is determined by the majority vote of the examining committee. The following rules govern the voting process:  

• In the case where the student is co-supervised, the co-supervisors’ votes shall count collectively as one vote. In the case where co-supervisors vote for different outcomes, these votes shall count as 0.5 votes for each outcome.
• In the case where only two outcomes receive votes and the number of votes is equal for both outcomes, the decision shall be for the less positive outcome, provided that outcome is not exam unsuccessful. 
• If the previous case results in an exam unsuccessful outcome, or if no majority is obtained, the case shall be referred to the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, who shall make the final determination of the outcome of the exam.

Those members of the examining committee who are voting members shall be clearly communicated to the candidate.   

In programs where the comprehensive exam involves multiple components, a student may obtain different outcomes on each component of the exam. The comprehensive exam will be considered satisfied when the candidate has passed all components of the exam. The comprehensive exam will be considered failed if the candidate receives an exam unsuccessful outcome on any component. No component may be repeated more than once.  

A student may seek reassessment of the exam evaluation only when the outcome is re-examination or exam unsuccessful based on the written element of the comprehensive exam. A student may not seek a reassessment of the oral component. A request for reassessment shall follow the process described in Policy 70 (reassessment challenge).   

Academic integrity and the comprehensive examination

The University considers academic integrity to be an integral part of all scholarship. Violations of academic integrity are handled under University Policy 71.   

When the comprehensive exam involves a written submission of original work by the candidate completed in a non-invigilated setting, the student shall employ the University’s plagiarism detection software leading up to the submission of the written document to the examining committee. The student is encouraged to discuss the reports generated from the software with their supervisor(s) to avoid academic integrity violations. The report generated related to the document submitted to the examining committee shall be included with the student’s written element and shall be made available to the committee.

In cases where comprehensive exams involve the submission of a written document followed by an oral exam component, the following process shall be followed regarding suspected violations of academic integrity on the written element: the person identifying the possible violation shall communicate the concern in writing only to the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies in the student’s home Faculty. The Associate Dean shall then assess the allegations. If the vetting cannot be completed prior to the scheduled date of the oral component of the exam, the oral exam shall be postponed, pending the outcome of the investigation. If the vetting is completed prior to the oral exam, and no violation is identified, then the exam can be held as scheduled.  

When a change in comprehensive exam date is necessary, the Associate Dean Graduate Studies shall inform the candidate, the supervisor or co-supervisors and the Graduate Officer not later than one week prior to the date of the scheduled exam. If a violation is determined to have happened, the Associate Dean shall proceed under Policy 71.   

If no violation is deemed to have occurred, the exam shall be rescheduled to the satisfaction of the student, the supervisors, and the examining committee. This rescheduling of the exam shall be considered a valid extenuating circumstance to extend the exam deadline.    

If an academic integrity violation is believed to have occurred during the oral component of the comprehensive exam, the person suspecting the violation shall ask the Chair to pause the exam. The concerns identified shall be communicated to the Chair (only) who will then determine the course of action. If the Chair believes that uncertainty exists regarding the concerns identified, the Chair may determine that the exam shall continue and the potential academic integrity violation will be vetted after the completion of the exam. If the Chair believes that the suspected violation is likely to be valid or that the alleged occurrence precludes a fair evaluation of the candidate, the Chair shall then suspend the exam until a determination can be made as to whether an academic integrity violation has occurred.   

In both cases, the suspected academic integrity violation shall be reported to and investigated by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies in the student’s home Faculty under Policy 71.   

When the comprehensive exam includes the completion of a written exam in a controlled environment, suspected violations of academic integrity in these cases should be reported to the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies in the student’s home Faculty.

Qualifying examination

Some PhD programs at the University of Waterloo require doctoral students to successfully complete a qualifying exam(s) instead of, or in addition to, a comprehensive exam as part of their academic requirements. The differentiating features between a qualifying exam and a comprehensive exam are:

• A qualifying exam is developed and administered for a cohort of students (e.g. all PhDstudents in a program) whereas the comprehensive exam is developed and administered foran individual student;
• A qualifying exam is developed, administered and evaluated by a committee formed for a cohort of students, whereas a comprehensive exam committee is constituted for an individual student.

The purpose of this document is to provide University-level guidance to students, supervisors and Departments / Schools (referred to as Departments in this document) on qualifying exams.

Qualifying examination purpose

A qualifying exam is a cohort-based exam where all students being examined answer the same set of questions or problem(s) with a common time allotment. The purposes of qualifying exams at the University of Waterloo may include demonstrating that:

• PhD students have the appropriate academic background and foundation in the discipline within which their own research is going to be situated. This may include knowledge of established theories, concepts, methods or models and the necessary skill sets required before students can move to the research component of the program;
• PhD students have the capacity to engage in the scholarly communication necessary to be successful in their PhD studies.

The purpose(s) of the exam shall be communicated clearly to students.

Qualifying examination timing

The timing requirements of the qualifying exam – the latest date by which students must successfully complete the exam and the process for managing exceptions to this requirement – are equivalent to those specified for the comprehensive examination. Earlier deadlines are at the discretion of the Faculty, Department, or Program level. Please see the comprehensive examination regulations .

Qualifying examinations and students’ academic requirements

The guidelines on supporting students’ effort toward preparing for and completing the qualifying exam are equivalent to those for a comprehensive exam. Additional guidance for students serving as a TA are outlined in Policy 30.

Qualifying examining committee

A student’s qualifying exam written and/or oral components are evaluated by an examining committee constituted for a given cohort. These rules govern the composition of such an examining committee.

The qualifying exam committee shall include those who can advance the purpose(s) of the exam. Committee members are subject matter experts in areas in which the students will be examined. The University requires that the committee includes at least three members:

• Who hold a PhD or an equivalent degree as approved by the Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs;
• At least one of whom is a tenured or tenure-track member of the offering Department or Program, and

Additional committee members may be required at the discretion of the Department or Program. When examining committee members are external to the University of Waterloo, their purpose in the exam process shall be clearly communicated to the student(s) taking the exam.

Normally, the committee will not exceed five members.

The qualifying exam committee shall be Chaired by a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at the University of Waterloo with Approved Doctoral Dissertation Supervision (ADDS) status, normally from the offering Department or Program. The Chair’s role is at a minimum to ensure that the exam is conducted and evaluated fairly and equitably, consistent with academic best practices. The Chair is a non-voting member of the qualifying examining committee.

Members of the committee who are supervising student(s) completing the qualifying exam shall make this relationship known to the Chair and other members of the committee prior to evaluation of the student’s (or students’) exam(s).

The composition of the qualifying examination committee will be approved by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, or a delegate.

The method by which the qualifying examining committee is constituted and the timing of the examining committee formation shall be clearly articulated and communicated to students.

Qualifying examination format and content

The exam format is designed to test an entire cohort of students who attempt this milestone simultaneously, based on a common examination in a given time. The content of the qualifying exam shall be directly related to the stated purpose(s) of the exam. These elements shall be clearly articulated and communicated to students to ensure transparency and clarity of expectations. If a student in a program perceives a lack of clarity on these issues, these concerns should immediately be communicated to the student’s Department’s Graduate Officer.

Accommodations

Students may warrant an accommodation to allow for an alternative exam format other than that which is described by Department or Program. For accommodations related to health, the student shall provide supporting medical documentation to the University’s AccessAbility Services . AccessAbility Services shall determine whether an accommodation is warranted. When an accommodation is determined to be appropriate, AccessAbility Services shall communicate the decision and the nature of the accommodation to the Graduate Officer in the student’s home Department who will coordinate with the chair of the examining committee on the implementation of the Accommodation.

Requests for accommodation not related to health issues shall be made by students to the Graduate Officer in the students’ home Department, who will coordinate the process by which the request for accommodation will be advanced.

Evaluation and outcomes of the qualifying examination

All voting members of the committee shall complete their assessment of students’ submissions individually. Each student’s submission shall be assessed by at least two members of the qualifying examination committee. All student submissions made available to the committee for review shall be anonymous. Normally, the committee will meet to deliberate the outcomes.

The permitted outcomes and re-examination process for a qualifying examination are equivalent to that of a comprehensive examination.

Academic integrity and the qualifying examination

The University considers academic integrity to be an integral part of all scholarship. Perceived violations of academic integrity are handled under University Policy 71. The guidelines surrounding process and academic integrity with respect to qualifying examinations are equivalent to that of comprehensive examinations.

Language requirement

When a department considers that a candidate must have some level of competence in a particular foreign language or languages, the successful demonstration of this competence becomes a requirement for the degree.

Program of study and supervision

Candidates shall have their program of study and research approved by the department (or delegated committee) in which they are enrolled. In certain Faculties, a candidate will be responsible, upon entry to the program, to a supervisor who will be approved by the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) of the Faculty. In other Faculties, the candidate will be responsible to a provisional supervisor to be approved by the departmental Graduate Studies Committee.

Advisory Committee

When a department wishes to appoint a supervisor (at the latest a month after the comprehensive), the departmental Graduate Officer shall consult with the candidate about an Advisory Committee and shall recommend to the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) of the Faculty the composition of that three to five person Committee. In certain Faculties the Advisory Committee is appointed upon the passing of the comprehensive examination. This Committee must consist of the supervisor(s) and at least one other faculty member from the department. The supervisor must be a regular member of the University faculty with Approved Doctoral Dissertation Supervisor (ADDS) status; or, when a supervisor has adjunct status, another on-campus professor must serve as co-supervisor. The Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) of the Faculty has the authority to waive the co-supervision requirement on the recommendation of the department / school. Two other faculty members, one of whom may be external to the department or Faculty, may also participate in this Committee. In any event, the Advisory Committee must have a minimum of the supervisor and two other faculty members or a maximum of two supervisors and three other faculty members.

PhD thesis examination

The PhD thesis examination is the culmination of the candidate's research program. It exposes the candidate's work to scholarly criticism by members of the University and gives them the opportunity to defend it.

All PhD candidates must successfully present and defend their thesis according to the procedures outlined in the Graduate Thesis Regulations.

Recommendation: awarding of the degree

On the basis of the PhD Thesis Examining Committee's report and its own records of candidates' progress in their assigned program of study, the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) of the Faculty, or a committee specifically appointed by a faculty for this purpose, decides whether candidates have fulfilled the requirements for the PhD degree. If the decision is that they have, supporting documentation is forwarded to the Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs with the request that they recommend to Senate that the degree be awarded. The Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs examines this request in light of the report from the Chair of the thesis examination. If the Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs has any reason to feel that the acceptance of the thesis is open to dispute, the Associate Vice-President will take the matter before the Associate Deans (Graduate Studies) for advice or, if necessary, to the Senate Graduate and Research Council, which is specifically given authority to decide in such cases.

Thesis submission

When the thesis is accepted by the department and Faculty, and all other requirements for the degree have been met, the student must provide the University with an electronic copy of their approved thesis as a final University degree requirement. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD in Biomedical Engineering is a research-intensive program that immerses students in the application of biomedical sciences and engineering principles to advance solutions for challenges in human health. Students can be admitted to the PhD program through direct entry after completion of a bachelor’s degree or, alternatively, after the completion of a master’s degree. PhD students receive a guaranteed minimum stipend for four years.

Length of study

Four years (defined as the period for an academically well-prepared student to complete all program requirements while registered full-time).

Admission requirements

• Entry into PhD program after completion of a bachelor’s degree (i.e., direct entry) : A four-year bachelor’s degree in engineering, medicine, dentistry, physical sciences, or biological sciences, or its equivalent , with an average of at least 3.7 on a 4.0 grade point average scale (i.e., A minus) in the final two years of study from a recognized university ; or
• Entry into PhD program after completion of a master’s degree : A master’s degree in engineering, medicine, dentistry, physical sciences, or biological sciences, or its equivalent , with a cumulative average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 grade point average scale (i.e., B plus) from a recognized university .
• Proof of English-language proficiency is required for all applicants educated outside of Canada whose native language is not English. View the BME English-language requirement policy to determine whether you are required to take a language test and for a list of accepted testing agencies and their minimum scores required for admission.
• Applicants must find a BME faculty supervisor. ( NB : You do not need a supervisor at the time of application. However, admission is competitive and only candidates who have found and secured a research supervisor will be admitted to begin graduate studies.)
• MD/PhD candidates must apply through the MD program
• Possession of the minimum requirements for entry does not guarantee admission

Biomedical Engineers apply their knowledge in engineering, biology, and medicine to healthcare and medical device industries. Since 2006, our PhD program has trained students in the fundamentals of Biomedical Engineering, providing extensive research experience in biomechanics, biomaterials, biochemical processing, cellular engineering, imaging, medical devices, micro-electro-mechanical implantable systems, and physiological modeling, simulation, monitoring, and control, as well as medical robotics. What makes the program unique?

The Biomedical Engineering Program at UBC is a part of the School of Biomedical Engineering, which falls under both the Faculty of Applied Science and Faculty of Medicine. Biomedical Engineering at UBC is the only program in Canada to offer the Engineers in Scrubs (EiS) training program. The EiS program began as an NSERC-funded Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program designed to foster innovation in medical technology by training biomedical engineers in clinical environments. Students receive a significant portion of their training in hospital settings, and the program focuses on the medical technology innovation process. This program complements the research training of MASc and PhD students and allows them to work closely with medical professionals in identifying clinical problems and developing a solution.

I was particularly attracted to the applied and interdisciplinary nature of my program. I get to collaborate with surgeons, mechanical engineers, and computational experts in solving complex problems and, at the end of the day, can walk away with something tangible that we've created. The direct human impact associated with applied research is really important to me.

Applicants to the BME program should normally hold a research master's degree in engineering or a closely-related degree with significant technical, analytical and mathematical components (e.g., physics, biophysics, chemistry, computer science). Students with degrees in other fields (e.g., life sciences, kinesiology, physical therapy) may be considered for the program if they have adequate technical preparation. In exceptional cases, applicants from Canadian or US institutions who hold a bachelor's degree with an overall average in the A grade range and who demonstrate advanced research ability may be granted direct admission to our doctoral degree program. Please see the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website for more information. Applicants from international institutions will have specific minimum admission requirements established by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

Letters of Reference

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Statement of Interest

Many programs require a statement of interest , sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

Supervision

UBC Biomedical Engineering researchers work in a wide range of areas. Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

The majority of PhD students are offered research assistantships (RAs) by faculty members. RAs are funded by research grants for specific projects which almost always constitute thesis projects. Although you will automatically be considered for an RA when submitting your online application, to successfully secure an RA appointment you are encouraged to make contact with a research supervisor. The number of RAs offered will vary depending on lab and research space as well as available funding.

From September 2024 all full-time students in UBC-Vancouver PhD programs will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.

Average Funding

• 28 students received Teaching Assistantships. Average TA funding based on 28 students was $6,360.
• 55 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 55 students was $24,643.
• 6 students received Academic Assistantships. Average AA funding based on 6 students was $5,499.
• 61 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 61 students was $7,444.
• 12 students received external awards. Average external award funding based on 12 students was $23,014.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

The PhD program in Biomedical Engineering is designed to prepare students for employment in the public or private sector, or to pursue further studies. Governing Law

You and TC Global agree that any cause of action arising out of or related to the Service must commence within one (1) year after the cause of action arose; otherwise, such cause of action is permanently barred.

Terms of Use and all other policies available on this Service shall be interpreted and construed in accordance with the laws of India. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms of Use and/ or other policies available on this App, including any question regarding its existence, validity or termination, shall be referred to and finally resolved by arbitration administered by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC") in accordance with the Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC Rules") for the time being in force, which rules are deemed to be incorporated by reference in this clause. The Tribunal shall consist of 3 arbitrators. The seat and venue of Arbitration shall be Singapore and the language of proceedings shall be English. Subject to the foregoing, the Courts of Singapore shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes relating to the subject matter, herein.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a dispute arises with respect to the validity, scope, enforceability, inventorship, ownership, infringement, breach or unauthorised use of any patent, trademark, copyright or other intellectual property right or any non-proprietary data owned and/or controlled by TC Global, whether or not arising from the Terms of Use, such dispute (at the option of TC Global) shall not be submitted to arbitration and instead, TC Global shall be free to initiate litigation, including but not limited to a claim for interim injunctive relief, in a court of competent jurisdiction, in any country or other jurisdiction in which such rights apply.

Integration and Severability

These Terms of Use are the entire agreement between you and TC Global with respect to the Service and use of the Site, Service, Content or User Submissions, and supersede all prior or contemporaneous communications and proposals (whether oral, written or electronic) between you and TC Global with respect to the Site. Applications

I am interested in the MD/PhD Program. How do I know if I am eligible to apply? Admission to the MD/PhD Program is limited to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. To be eligible for admission, you must have a BSc degree with first class standing (or equivalent), and have fulfilled all the requirements of acceptance into the four-year Medical Undergraduate Program of the Faculty of Medicine, and the doctoral program requirements of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. You are required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), but the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional. Students who have completed an MSc degree will fulfill the doctoral requirements of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

Do I need to send in two distinct applications? Yes, you are applying concurrently to the MD Undergraduate Program and the MD/PhD Program, which have parallel but distinct admission processes. You are required to submit two sets of application – one for the MD Undergraduate Program, one for the MD/PhD Program. For purpose of the combined program, there is no need for applicants to put an application in to a specific department’s PhD program, unless they wish to do that as a back-up in case they are unsuccessful in the MD application.

What courses should I take in my undergraduate program in order to make myself eligible for admission to the MD/PhD Program? The MD/PhD Program considers students from a variety of backgrounds; no preference is given to any particular degree program.  Students planning to apply for the MD/PhD Program should select a course of study to conform to the requirements of a bachelor’s degree of their choice. No particular degree program is considered ideal as preparation for the study of medicine. A variety of undergraduate backgrounds are considered desirable. However, you must complete 6 credits of English coursework by April 30 of the year of entry into medical school.

By what criteria are students chosen? Besides the academic standard, other areas of strength including research experience and potential, MCAT scores, scholarships, personal qualities, research field of interest, reference letters, and the proposed research supervisor and laboratory are also assessed. Publications, as well as presentations at meetings, help your application but are not required; expectations for scientific output are considered in the context of the amount of time the applicant has been able to spend in research. Detailed knowledge of our program (as presented on the website, and also through contact with students currently in the program) can be helpful.

Are out-of-province MD/PhD applicants considered as in-province applicants by MD Admissions? Out-of-province MD/PhD applicants who receive interview offers from the MD and MD/PhD Programs are considered as in-province applicants by MD Admissions. Out-of-province applicants who are not invited for interview by the MD/PhD Program will be considered as out-of-province applicants by MD Admissions.

I have been accepted into the MD Undergraduate Program in August 2021 and I am interested in the MD/PhD Program. Can I still apply for the MD/PhD Program? Yes. All students (with a BSc or equivalent) currently accepted into the MD Undergraduate Program in August 2021 are encouraged to apply for the MD/PhD Program during their MD Year 1. At the time of application, you should plan to identify the research question you want to address, select the discipline and affiliated graduate program, as well as the research supervisor. We accept applications from current MD Year 1 students, but not MD students in Year 2 or above (who are encouraged to finish their MD and then pursue, for example, the Clinician Investigator Program route).

Graduate Student Applicants

Do you require applicants to have a Master’s degree when they submit their application? No, we do not really require students to have a Master’s degree when they submit their application. Students in Master’s degree programs however are strongly advised to be on track to complete their Master’s degree by July 30 of the year they hope to start at UBC.

I am enrolled in a graduate program. Can I still apply for the MD/PhD Program? In order for the students to really benefit from the integrated MD/PhD Program, they should enter before they have completed more than 2 years of graduate studies. In most instances, graduate students accepted into the MD/PhD Program will have completed their Master’s degree when they begin their first (Med 1) year of MD/PhD studies. If a student transfers from a Master’s program to a PhD program without completing their Master’s degree, they can apply if they are still in at most their second overall year of graduate studies at UBC, and intend to carry forward their PhD part of the MD/PhD program under the same UBC supervisor. In general, students whose PhD program is well underway are recommended to apply to enter medicine after they finish their PhD, as this will be their most efficient route to achieving both degrees.

Are there any restrictions for current graduate students when applying for the MD Undergraduate Program and MD/PhD Programs? The MD Undergraduate Program has specific rules that apply to graduate student applicants, who must complete all their degree requirements by July 30 prior to entering medicine. Applicants should be aware that if they achieve admission to the MD Undergraduate Program but are not among the few selected for admission to the combined MD/PhD Program, their offer to enter the MD program would be withdrawn and the student would have to reapply for entry in a year when all graduate requirements would be completed by July 30. Please refer to the MD admissions website about Graduate Student Applicants and their – “exception for MD/PhD applicants” .

I have already finished one year of my PhD program at UBC and hope to continue in the same lab within the MD/PhD program. If I get accepted, would I be able to finish the program in less than seven years? Possibly, but not necessarily. Good quality research work is important and that is what we are looking for. Approval to proceed to an oral thesis defense “early” will rest with the PhD supervisor and thesis committee.

Do I need to go through two sets of interviews? Yes, applicants are required to attend two sets of interviews. (1) The MD/PhD interview is approximately for 45 minutes. Each applicant will be interviewed by the panel committee which consists of the Program Director and/or Associate Program Director, two MD/PhD Admissions/Advisory Committee members and our student representative. (2)The MD Undergraduate Admissions follow the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) format. We do highly recommend our applicants to familiarize themselves with the MMI format for their MD interview, and take opportunities to practice for such an interview style if possible.

Who would most probably receive an MD/PhD interview offer? Applicants who received MD/PhD interviews typically had overall straight As while carrying a difficult course load, a record of winning both major scholarships and competitive research studentships, research experience in at least three labs, a published paper, and MCAT scores near 520.

Research Supervisor(s)

Do I have to identify a proposed research supervisor in my MD/PhD application? While it is not required that you have finalized your choice of supervisor at the time of your application, it is expected that you will have identified potential supervisors in your area of interest, and if you are offered an interview that you will have (at least virtually) met with potential supervisors prior to interviews. The laboratory and research supervisor proposed by the MD/PhD applicant is one of the criteria we use to rank applicants for admission, and it is to the applicant’s advantage to demonstrate that they have explored potential supervisors, research environments, and projects. A final decision on the research supervisor and project is ideally made by the time of entry into Med 1, although changes can be made within the first two years of the program.

Does the proposed research supervisor have to work in a department within the Faculty of Medicine? The research supervisor must be a full member of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, and is usually from a Department, Interdisciplinary Program or Institute within the Faculty of Medicine. The research supervisor must hold a current CIHR research operating grant or a grant from an equivalent peer-reviewed, federal or provincial granting agency. UBC’s MD Undergraduate Program offers our students the opportunity to train with supervisors based at any one of four geographically distinct sites in British Columbia: UBC’s Vancouver campus in Vancouver (Vancouver-Fraser Medical Program), UBC’s Okanagan campus in Kelowna ( Southern Medical Program ), the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island ( Island Medical Program ), or the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George ( Northern Medical Program ). The MD/PhD Program will make arrangements for research supervisor(s) outside of UBC to become a member of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

What factors should be considered when choosing a research supervisor and laboratory? Some issues to consider in choosing a laboratory, beyond obviously the research area and potential projects (and whether these mesh with your interests) would be: 1) The supervisor’s availability to provide guidance/mentorship. Why is this the best person for you to train with given your area of interest? 2) The supervisor’s experience with trainees. What is the supervisor’s track record of training PhD students? What is their track record of training clinician scientists? If they have not trained a clinician scientist, how will they support your specific needs? 3) What is the laboratory environment? Are there other graduate students and postdoctoral fellows available in the laboratory and training environment to provide opportunities for interaction and sharing of technical and specialty knowledge? Who are the other trainees/staff that will support you? 4) The supervisor’s publication record. What journals, how many papers, and are trainees on the papers? 5) Status of laboratory resources and funding. Does the supervisor have the necessary resources (infrastructure, funding, personnel) for your proposed project? Ultimately choosing the right supervisor is one of the biggest decisions that will influence your PhD, and we want to see that you have given this appropriate consideration and have done your homework on UBC.

I have not yet spoken directly with any professor at UBC in my proposed field of research. Do you have a list of potential supervisors? Our program does not maintain a list of potential research supervisors. To assist in internet searches, we have identified a list of graduate programs and departments at UBC which can host MD/PhD students, although this is not intended to represent a definitive list of all possibilities. Please feel free to proactively contact the professors whose research interests coincide with yours.

Can I have co-supervisors? Upon approval from the MD/PhD Program Director, you can certainly have co-supervisors. Students who have chosen a research supervisor outside the Faculty of Medicine are required to have a co-supervisor within the Faculty. MD/PhD applicants are welcome to contact the Program to find out if the proposed research supervisor meets this program requirement.

Can I propose a member of the MD/PhD admissions committee as a potential research supervisor? To avoid conflict of interest during the admissions process, applicants are discouraged from contacting either members of the Admissions Committee or the Program Directors as potential research supervisors while their applications are still under active consideration. Applicants accepted to the program are free to choose any UBC faculty member to act as their supervisor, including members of the Admissions committee and the Program Directors. There are many excellent potential supervisors across Faculty of Medicine affiliated departments at the four program sites whom applicants could contact to act as potential supervisors. Applicants accepted to the program are not committed to work with any particular supervisor mentioned in their written application or their interview. Accepted applicants do not actually need to make a final decision on their PhD research supervisor(s) until end of Year 1.

Can I send in my application and then notify you when I have found a proposed research supervisor? Yes. You can email us the information and we will include it in your application file. It is also understood that an applicant’s plans in this regard may change between the time they submit their paper application and the time of their interview.

Research Area and Experience

Is there any particular research area that would make my application stronger than others? No particular research area would make your application stronger than others. We suggest finding a research area of particular interest to you. The laboratory and supervisor chosen by the MD/PhD applicant (not their subject area per se) is one of the criteria we use to rank applicants for admission. This factor plays an important role in the applicant’s successful completion of the program.

What should I write in the autobiographical essay of research interest for the MD/PhD Program? The essay for the MD/PhD Program is focused on the research area that you would like to pursue and the reasons why you have chosen the Clinician Scientist path as a career in medicine, your perception of the discipline, and the medical field that best matches the area of your research interest.

What constitutes “Professional Employment Experience” in the application? Simply list your work experience. You can include jobs in research labs, health institutes, self-employed jobs etc.

I am currently preparing a manuscript for submission, may I attach the abstract of the paper to the application? You may attach the abstract of your paper to your application. As soon as the paper gains its final acceptance and goes in press, please send us a copy of the paper and/or acceptance letter. Interviews will be held in February. If you have a paper that is accepted between submission of the written application and the interview, we will consider it in your application if you can inform us of its change in status.

Transcripts

What is considered a first-class standing? At UBC, first-class standing is defined as 80% (A-) or better .

The transcript which I submit with my application does not include my fourth year winter grades. Do you need my winter grades? Your transcript should show courses registered in the final year of your undergraduate degree. You can update your winter grades in early/mid January by emailing the MD/PhD Program office.

I have credentials from universities outside of Canada. How do I find out the minimum academic requirement? You can refer to the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral webpage for information.

Do you have a reference form for my MD/PhD referees to fill out? After you have submitted your on-line application, your referees will receive an email notification to submit a reference on you via the Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies online application website. We do not have a specific reference form. Your referees can upload their letter of reference via the online application website. The letter of reference must be on letterhead and signed.

What should be included in the reference letter? The referees should be able to give appraisals on your academic standing and qualifications, research experience, abilities, and clinical potential relevant to your application for the MD/PhD Program. They can also comment on your originality, industriousness and persistence, intellectual capacity, and interpersonal communication skills.

Financial Support

Do students accepted to the program receive support funding? In addition to reduced medical tuition, all MD/PhD students receive a graduate studentship award, with the MD/PhD Program able to support up to six years and four months for each student. Funding will start in January of their first year in the program.

Am I eligible for other awards while I am enrolled in the MD/PhD Program? Yes, MD/PhD students are strongly encouraged to apply for external studentships and scholarships. Our students have an excellent track record of successfully obtaining prestigious awards such as the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

The entry requirements for a combined MS and Ph.D. program are similar to that of a doctorate, as most applicants for the combined program would not have an advanced degree or journal publications. Admission to a combined degree can also be very competitive with most universities accepting just 3-4 candidates in a session.

1. Strong GPA - Candidates must have an excellent grade point average (GPA) to qualify for the programs. Students from other boards can find the equivalent of the GPA to assess their eligibility.

2. Standardized test scores - Candidates have to score very high points in the standardized scores. Here the student will be asked to submit test scores.

GRE: GRE is mandatory for almost all Ph.D. programs, including management studies, after a bachelor’s in the USA. In the case of doctoral programs, most students are required to present GRE subject scores of the course as well.

GMAT: GMAT is taken for admission to management studies. Business schools offering Ph.Ds in business management accept GMAT scores for admission into a wide range of Ph.D. programs in management.

TOEFL: TOEFL is an English proficiency test for students from non-native English-speaking countries. For international students, a high TOEFL score is a must for admission to Ph.D. courses.

IELTS: IELTS is also accepted for international students' admission to Ph.D. programs. Like TOEFL, it is also an English proficiency test for students from non-native English-speaking countries. The IELTS test measures a candidate’s English language command in four different parameters- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

3. Letter of Recommendation (LOR) - One of the most important elements for admission to direct PhD programmes is a letter of recommendation . The letter of recommendation is an independent assessment of a candidate's potential. Most universities require at least two to three recommendation letters. It is advisable for students to have letters of recommendation written by either their professors or employees

4. Statement of Purpose (SOP) - The statement of purpose is another important element of the application package for admission to direct Ph.D. programs in the USA. It reflects the student's commitment to the Ph.D. program and goals in his life.

5. Resume - At the Ph.D. level, many universities would require the student to submit a resume along with the application. The resume should contain the candidate's basic information like date of birth, academic qualifications, achievements and details of any previous work in his area of interest.

6. Research projects - It is always helpful if the aspirant has the Ph.D. as an elective subject in the final year of their bachelor’s. Also, one can get additional points if the application is accompanied by any research or journal publications or any projects in the related field.

7. Interview - Most of the universities for PhD in the USA offering direct PhD hold a separate interview round for the aspirants. As in most cases, the Ph.D. interviews are conducted by invitation only. The questions are general as well as specific to the subject the candidate wants to pursue.

• Saves Time - Pursuing a PhD is a long time-consuming process and commitment for years. So combining a master's with PhD does not totally skip the master's duration but enables to study without a break period.
