University of bristol: social work, doctor of philosophy - phd, full-time, 4 years starts sep 2024.

A PhD in Social Work equips students with the skills and experience to apply social research methods and tools to critically examine some of the most pressing contemporary issues in social work practice, policy and education. Students are encouraged to develop a topic of interest that directly relates to their own practice experiences or is of wider interest and relevance to the delivery of social work services and support to disadvantaged individuals and groups, either in the UK or overseas.

Students will be supported to develop research questions and design a study that enables them to rigorously research their topic of interest and make an original contribution to the knowledge base of social work. Topics may directly explore practice issues or contribute more broadly to social work knowledge, working with specific groups and communities and addressing systems of inequality and social disadvantage. Where appropriate, students are encouraged to work in collaboration with relevant organisations and user and interest groups to ensure their research outputs and key findings can directly inform social work practice and service delivery.

We are a multidisciplinary, research-intensive school which brings together theory, policy and practice. Our research engages with and influences national and international policy. Our policy experts come from a wide variety of backgrounds in social policy research, social work, sociology, gender violence, childhood studies, disability studies, health and social care, history, human geography, economics, psychology, physical activity, nutrition and health sciences, urban studies, and poverty, based within seven specialist research centres.

Supervisors in social work bring diverse interests across child and family social work (for example, looked after children; adoption and fostering; supporting parents with substance misuse or learning disabilities; domestic violence responses and interventions) and adult social care (for example, disabled adults' social care needs; housing and homelessness; mental health social work; social work with older people and carers; inclusive service provision for LGBTQ+ individuals).

The school is an exciting environment for postgraduate studies; we welcome students from the UK and abroad to join our diverse and highly-rated research team. We particularly welcome applications on topics with direct relevance to national and international social work and policy concerns.

We welcome new PhD students all year round. However, the largest intake is in September each year with a second intake in January. We strongly recommend applicants consider a September or January start.

Part-Time, 8 years starts Sep 2024

Full-time, 2 years starts sep 2024.

This two-year professional programme is designed for people who want to qualify and practise as a professional social worker. The programme leads to a nationally and internationally recognised professional social work qualification and graduates are eligible to register as a qualified social worker with Social Work England.

Qualifying for a postgraduate degree at Bristol means that you will be able to work with both children and adults, helping them to be safe, cope with difficulties and take control of their lives again. You will support people to identify their strengths and build their self-confidence, help them to overcome problems in times of crisis, and link with other services.

The teaching staff at Bristol include experienced practitioners who have worked in a variety of social work settings including child and adult safeguarding, domestic violence and abuse, school social work, foster care, physical and learning difficulties, mental health, youth offending, and hospital social work. At our research-intensive university, the programme's teaching team is also active in research, holding a wide range of funded social work research projects nationally and internationally.

Working as a social worker requires an ability to appraise complex and difficult situations, drawing on social science research, social work theories and methods of intervention. To be considered for enrolment on this programme you will need to demonstrate an understanding of social work (this could be within the United Kingdom or internationally). Upon completion of the programme you will have a thorough understanding of social policies and a firm grasp of the legal powers and duties that underpin practice in England.

The MSc in Social Work combines university-based learning with two extended periods of supervised practice as a student social worker. Your practice placements will consist of at least 170 days of learning across two contrasting practice settings, together with 30 days of skills training. By completing this degree, you will be eligible to register with a social work regulatory body (such as Social Work England) and practise as a qualified professional social worker in a range of settings (including statutory, voluntary, private and independent sectors), and in a number of countries (contingent upon country-specific requirements).

You will develop an understanding of the structural and personal factors that lead to disadvantage, oppression and discrimination, and learn how to apply this understanding to your practice. You will develop values and skills as a reflective practitioner, appraising relevant evidence - including research - to evaluate your own and other people's work and to contribute to the development of policy and practice.

Social Work Principles + Business = Success

Written by: Ajaylah Humphrey, MSW/MBA ’24

Social work principles and practices can play a valuable and often overlooked role in the business world. Many people hear the term “social worker” and think they only care about the people and money doesn’t matter, while those in the business sectors are often looked at as people who only care about the money and forget the greater good. The truth is both perspectives are important on all levels—micro, mezzo and macro. Incorporating social work principles into business operations can lead to several benefits for organizations, employees and the community.

The use of social work principles within organizations can include monitoring the well-being and mental health of employees and clients and ensuring human rights and ethical labor practices are employed. In addition, diversity and inclusion practices being standard in the workplace and proper use of conflict resolution can benefit both employees and employers.

Some of these issues being addressed more regularly within UB’s MBA curriculum which is an important reason as to why I chose this program. These practices can also help create a supportive and compassionate environment, a more inclusive work culture that values and respects the differences among others.

Social workers can provide counseling, support and resources to employees dealing with personal or work-related challenges, manage workplace conflicts and disputes, and provide training on topics such as cultural competence, empathy, active listening and effective communication. Their goal is to foster a more harmonious and productive work environment, increased innovation, improved employee relations and valuable customer interactions.

Aside from workplace culture, exhibiting social work principles in business practices is important because of the positive impact this can have in our society. Social workers can help businesses engage with and support local communities. This can enhance a company’s reputation, build positive relationships and create social impact.

By contributing to the development and implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives we can ensure that businesses are promoting responsible business practices, including philanthropy, environmental sustainability and ethical supply chain management. All of these practices can help businesses establish and maintain positive relationships with local communities, which is essential for organizations looking to be good corporate citizens and maintain a positive public image. This means we can help build trust and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including employees, customers, investors, and local communities.

Incorporating social work practices into business operations is not just a moral imperative—it also makes good business sense. It can lead to a healthier, more engaged workforce, increased employee retention, enhanced reputation and a positive impact on the surrounding community. Including social work principles fosters a more inclusive, supportive and ethical corporate culture, which ultimately contributes to the long-term success of an organization.

Bio: Ajaylah grew up in Buffalo with her siblings, mother, cousins, and grandparents. She is very family-oriented, which includes many of her friends, and her 5-year-old pitbull-mastiff pup, Paxton.

Earning her undergraduate degree, a BA in Psychology, from UB in 2018, she went to work in the human services field servicing youth in local foster care agencies in the Buffalo area. Ajaylah returned to UB in 2021 to begin her MSW program where she found herself further intrigued and inspired. From there she became a dual degree MSW/MBA student learning what it takes to be a leader in any field she enters.

Balancing and maintaining a successful school-to-work-to-social life is very important to Ajaylah so this requires taking time for self-care. Ajaylah de-stresses by going to the gym and also playing for a local women’s rugby team. Always on the go, any chance she can get to travel she will, covering over 15 countries thus far. Her carry-on always has headphones, a good coloring or sketchbook, playing cards, and a pack of gum.

BDS Dentistry (A206)

Dentistry (A206)

Course summary

In September 2023, we moved into our new Dental School building with the latest facilities and equipment, designed with input from our current students and staff to provide an exceptional educational experience.

This five-year degree has a strong core of clinical training supported by integrated learning of relevant sciences and technical skills. You will progress personally, academically, clinically and professionally, applying taught communication and teamworking skills when providing supervised dental care to a diverse range of patients in and around Bristol. You will learn to work within dental and wider healthcare teams and networks, demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and behaviours so you graduate as a safe practitioner.

The course structure comprises four main themes of development:

  • practitioner,
  • scholar and scientist,
  • professional and agent of change,
  • person and citizen.

You will be introduced to basic concepts in the healthy patient before progressing to apply your knowledge and skills to prevent and treat a range of oral diseases. In the first year, you will become familiar with the clinic environment through peer group activities and observations. You will begin your dental practice under supervision in clinics after completion of simulated skills training undertaken in our new state-of-the-art facilities. From your second year, you will treat patients with a wide variety, and increasing complexity, of oral and dental diseases in preparation for practice beyond graduation.

After the third year, you can choose to intercalate in a subject of personal interest to obtain a BA, BSc, or even a master's degree.

Student welfare is central to our programme and you will have access to a wide range of support, starting with our well-developed in-house personal tutor and senior tutor network, alongside support from the wider University.

Health and Disclosure and Barring Service check

Certain health conditions may be incompatible with careers in dentistry. Before starting your degree, you will need to complete a health assessment questionnaire and pre-course screening for blood-borne viruses. These blood tests are to identify the few individuals whose health status may place them and/or future patients at risk. Please note that as part of your training, you will come into contact with human and animal cadaveric material.

Practising dentistry demands the highest standards of professional and personal conduct. In accordance with General Dental Council guidelines, all dental students must complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. For more information, please visit our guidelines for students on the DBS disclosure page.

Accreditations

Our Dentistry BDS is approved by major professional bodies in the UK (GDC) so as a a graduate you can gain exemptions from a number of their examinations or credits for prior learning.
