How to format your marketing resume

When it comes to formatting your resume, there are a few rules you should follow:

  • Keep it to one page. Your resume should be your highlight reel, not an autobiography.
  • Opt for a simple format. This is not the place to use seven fonts and fifteen colors to highlight your creativity.

This is going to be the single biggest factor when the hiring manager is deciding to give you an interview or not. Think of it as the entree at a several-course dinner; it should take up the most space on your resume.

Showcase your marketing skills

The hiring process is a mystery, but it doesn’t have to be! Here’s what you need to know about the hiring process after you’ve submitted your resume:

  • Companies use an Automated Tracking System (ATS) to filter out resumes based on certain keywords.
  • The hiring manager or HR manager reviews your resume and determines whether you get an initial interview or not.

But how can you be sure you’ll get past this filter? Simple: include the relevant skills that are mentioned in the  marketing job description , of course!

In your  resume’s skills section , try to include  at least 90 percent technical skills  if you can. ATS filters don’t screen for soft skills like “communication” or “leadership.” Hiring managers like to see soft skills, but to pass the ATS, you will need primarily hard skills.

So what skills should you include? We’ve compiled a list of useful marketing skills that you can include on your resume. Remember,  only include skills you’d be comfortable explaining in an interview .

Tailoring your resume for each marketing role

Because “marketing” is such a broad term, you’re much more likely to get an interview if you tailor your resume for each job to which you apply.

Tailoring your resume tells hiring managers that you’re detail-oriented and committed to the company. Remember, you’ll be competing with many other marketers for the role, so take advantage of any opportunity you can to impress the hiring manager.

Start customizing your marketing resume by following these steps:

  • Read the job description thoroughly. As you read it, think of any past experience you’ve held that matches what you’re reading.
  • On the first draft of your resume, list any work experience you have that is related to the role. Include the skills they’re looking for and specific responsibilities.

Let’s walk through a concrete example.

Let’s say the company Qapital is hiring a senior performance marketer. Here are the job responsibilities:

  • Own all paid performance marketing channels and serve as a day-to-day steward of the budget.
  • Manage acquisition strategy and execution for paid media across channels.  Continuously improve performance through detailed optimization to meet aggressive campaign goals and objectives. 
  • Build and maintain a test-and-learn culture to determine the most effective channels.
  • Source and manage media agencies, performance marketing agencies, and other external performance marketing partners.
  • Work collaboratively to create and test messaging and creatives for multiple audiences and engagements/channels.
  • Partner closely with media agencies to align on goals, and drive the strategy to get there.
  • Devise innovative ways to drive subscriptions and KPIs. Create a testing agenda for new digital platforms and creatives.

Here’s what your resume might look like if you were applying for this particular role:

  • Onboarded and monitored media agency partners, saving $250,000 by ending contracts with the least-performing partners while hitting revenue targets
  • Led forecasting, budgeting, tracking, and reporting for all paid acquisitions, resulting in new leads that generated $17M in 2017
  • Fostered a culture of testing and learning by encouraging constant optimization of ad strategy, increasing conversation rates by 87%
  • Exceeded growth targets every quarter by 24% on average

As you can see, the work experience has been adjusted to closely match what Qapital wants from their new hire. Doing this will ensure you get past both the initial ATS scan and the hiring manager’s inspection.

Your marketing resume objective

Most of the time, you won’t need an objective, but it can be a useful tool for an entry-level candidate. (If you’re a senior-level candidate with at least 10 years of experience, use a  resume summary  instead.) But what exactly  is  an objective?

A  resume objective  expresses your specific interest in the marketing role you’re applying to while highlighting your skills and goals for your future job.

Since your resume is limited on space, you need to should scrutinize everything you include. Our rule of thumb: unless you’re going to customize your resume objective for each role you apply to, leave it out entirely. You want the first thing hiring managers read to be something that significantly improves your chances of getting an interview.

Which of these resume objectives would you prefer as a hiring manager?

WRONG – uninformative resume objective

“Looking to leverage my experience with social media marketing to help grow a customer-centric technology product”

This candidate didn’t bother to customize the resume objective for the specific role. Compare that to this   resume objective:

RIGHT – tailored resume objective

“Looking to leverage my experience with paid customer acquisition in new markets to further Stripe’s mission of making payments accessible to businesses of all sizes as they expand into South America.”

This resume objective clearly demonstrates how the candidate has researched both the role and the company. More than that, they succinctly stated why they’re a great fit for the role. This is the kind of resume objective that’s worth including!

Education and certifications

While your education section doesn’t need to be huge, you still need to include it. List the school you went to and the degree(s) you obtained while there. 

If you’re an entry-level candidate or have only a few years of experience, you can include relevant courses and your GPA (if it’s higher than 3.2). However, for more senior-level marketers, your education section should only have the school you went to (and where it was located), the years you were there, and the degree you earned.

Get ahead of other job applicants by quantifying your marketing impact on your resume. Can you quantify generated leads in a month, revenue gained from a social media campaign, improved performance from A/B testing, etc.? It’s okay if you can only give an estimate, but seeing numbers on the page not only helps solidify your impact, but they also disrupt the flow of text—meaning the hiring manager reviewing your resume is forced to slow down and look a little closer!

There are so many marketing positions out there, so it’s important to only include skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying for (and, of course, relevant to the skills you honestly have). As a marketing analyst, skills that could make sense for your resume include CRM, A/B testing, social media ads, and SEO strategies. On the other hand, skills for a marketing specialist might be branding, digital and print copywriting, email marketing, and Microsoft and Google Suite.

If you decide to include an objective (you probably don’t need it!), the secret sauce in writing a good one is tailoring it to the company and making it clear why you’re the right fit to meet that company’s challenges or needs addressed in its job description. Here’s an example that hits the mark: Adept and high-speed thinker with 2 years of marketing internship experience and 3 years in office operations. Eager to demonstrate skills in crafting paid advertisements and executing tools, such as Salesforce, MS Suite, and Google Analytics as a marketing assistant at MIXD.

How to write a CV for marketing

Marketing encompasses a wide range of roles, and you'll need to demonstrate specific, required skills. In a Guardian Careers live Q&A Janet Davies, marketing and communications director for Thomsons Online Benefits, gives some examples : "Response marketing needs a high degree of numeracy; campaign management requires exceptional organisational skills. Communications disciplines require you to be articulate and have empathy with customers."

Many marketing skills are transferable, but for digital marketing roles, you'll need to gain an understanding of technologies to communicate better with clients and colleagues – and, says Matt Isherwood , digital director of balloon dog - you'll need to know what's technically achievable without necessarily knowing how to do it yourself.

Get noticed through commenting on industry blogs, following agencies on Twitter and attending seminars and meet-ups. Kevin Taylor, CEO of Gravytrain, says the company generally hires people who have immersed themselves in digital marketing in their spare time, so start a blog to show off your ideas and enthusiasm. Analyse campaigns and strategies, or provide tips – particularly on new technologies.

Employers want to see results and experience, enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, and commercial awareness. Even small-scale projects can boost your chances of impressing an employer. Don't just rely on advertised jobs, instead, identify local companies or charities where you can use your skills and put together a marketing plan. Roger Foster from the Chartered Institute of Marketing says : "Do it with style and enthusiasm and it will show through." In a live Q&A on digital marketing , Damian Hanson, CEO of One iota, suggests running a small campaign. "It can be about anything - it's just about getting a message across to an audience, but doing so cheaply and with opportunities to measure success."

Although you don't need a degree in marketing, a professional qualification will help you stand out. The CIM/CAM marketing qualifications are well respected, as are the practical courses run by organisations such as e-consultancy . Emphasise ongoing professional development. In a fast-changing industry like digital marketing, you need to be up to date with emerging technologies.

Prove you can market yourself with a concise, targeted and achievement-driven CV. Use your cover letter to draw attention to specific areas and to demonstrate your research – what you know about the company and its clients, or what you like about its previous marketing campaigns, for example.

Keith White, head of marketing for events companies such as Hen Heaven, suggests the AIDA approach in your cover letter:

Attention-grabbing headline: "Want to increase your sales next year?"

Interest: "For the past three years, I've been studying the most successful ways to grow a business through marketing."

Desire: "I am willing to start right away, and have a skillset that will benefit you greatly."

Action: "CALL ME!!"

Using an innovative approach such as an infographic CV can work, depending on the culture of the organisation. Janet Davies advises : "A quirky agency may appreciate a quirky application; it doesn't work with the large corporates."

Suggested format

Name / contact details / blog URL or LinkedIn profile URL / Twitter handle

(Optional) CV title (the title of the role you're applying for) followed by a branding statement, or key information such as a professional qualification to position you for the role.

You could then have a brief profile (detailing breadth of experience, or showcasing a standout achievement) and a skills section.

Give examples to show how you got results. Include employer details, or use a case-study or project layout if your work has mainly been freelance, voluntary, or short-term contracts.

  • Professional template - This is the standard marketing resume layout we recommend for most mid-level professionals. It balances your content with enough space to create a pleasant visual style that doesn’t overwhelm the reader.
  • Simple template - For marketing managers or CMOs, your resume is going to be more on the dense side: you’ve got a lot to show. This layout is designed exactly for that. It fits more onto the page without making it difficult to read.

Here are a few other things to consider when choosing a marketing resume template:

  • Consider how to structure your content so the most important elements (the ones that will make you stand out to the reader) are right upfront.
  • Keep the length in check, while someone looking to hire a senior marketer will probably read a few pages, lower-level positions should keep things short and to the point.

Notice the difference? It’s the same person with the same experience, but how they present themselves makes an enormous difference.

The first example is… well, “blah”. You don’t detect any passion, confidence, anything really.

The second example, on the other hand, exudes pride in their work and confidence in their skills. That’s exactly the kind of first impression you want your marketing resume header to make.

Putting a photo or a link to a personal website or LinkedIn account is a great way to personalize your resume header. However, some companies, states, and countries have laws about what kind of personal information your resume can include. Be sure to check

Every good marketing resume should have an objective or summary. The reason is that they answer two critical questions for anyone reading your resume: who are you and what are you trying to achieve?

There are two ways to do this. One is to include a short statement under your name in your resume header. The idea here is to quickly and efficiently explain a bit about who you are. This helps give context to the rest of your resume.

But for most marketers, a summary is the better way to go. It gives you a little more space to explain who you are and make a strong impression.

Here’s what your summary section shouldn’t look like:

The problem with that summary can be summarized in one word: vague. What does your expertise look like? How many years have you been a digital marketer? Do you have any certifications? What interests you in digital marketing? What kind of skills do you want to grow?

Now compare that to a better version of the same summary below.

The difference is stark. This version reads like a summary of a person on a mission with confidence and enthusiasm, brimming with ideas. Yet, it still manages to include some important specifics. Sure, that information will be contained elsewhere in the resume as well, but your summary is your one shot to make a strong impression by telling a cohesive story, don’t blow it. If your resume has a cover letter, this is a better place to include the information you would otherwise put in a resume summary

Your marketing resume’s experience section needs to be laser-focused on results. No company wants to hire someone to “manage social media profiles” or “oversee PPC”, they want someone who can boost social media engagement or decrease CPC by 40%.

Look at the difference between these two marketing resume experience examples:

  • • Boosted organic marketing revenue by 40% in the first 6 months
  • • Reduced the team size from 6 to 4 while boosting content output by focusing the team and reforming our CMS
  • • Created a new SEO strategy which successfully increased our organic traffic by 43% within the first 9 months
  • • Boosted organic marketing revenue
  • • Successfully brought on a new CMS
  • • Created a new SEO strategy

They describe the exact same experience, but by being specific, using numbers, and framing the experience around goals that are relevant to the employer the first example is 100% more effective.

You can also try mentioning instances when you learned a new marketing skill or identified an area for improvement. Showing that you’re self motivated is another big draw for most companies looking to hire entry level marketers or even VPs of marketing.

Look into who will be reading your marketing resume and ask yourself “what matters to this person.” Just like with any good marketing campaign, if your resume can address the pain points of both the company and the individual reading your resume, you’re more likely to land that job.

What should be included in an entry level marketing resume?

If you’re looking for a marketing internship or your first marketing job, crafting a resume that shows you’re qualified is extra challenging. Fortunately, there are plenty of other ways to demonstrate you have the skills and qualities necessary to thrive in a marketing position.

In this example, a marketing intern demonstrates self-motivation, organizational abilities, and the ability to work well in groups. All of these skills are exceptionally valuable in a marketing position and none of them required a job in marketing to demonstrate.

Without even mentioning marketing, these skills and examples show that this person has what it takes to get started in an entry level marketing position.

Consider getting certifications in areas like Hubspot or Google Analytics. These can be done for free and show that you’re a self motivated learner.

If you have a marketing degree, this is fairly straightforward. Emphasize the skills you gained, internships you had, etc. If your degree was more than 5 or so years in the past, you can leave off most of the detail.

However, many marketers have degrees in totally unrelated fields, so should they be included?

Yes, but be sure to frame them towards marketing if possible. Here’s an example of someone with a history degree applying for a marketing position:

  • • Researched and wrote an average of 4 10-15 page papers per semester
  • • Final thesis dealt with the history of Coca Cola’s global advertising
  • • Took 4 speaking intensive classes to develop public speaking skills
  • • President of the young historians club, organizing annual fundraisers and boosting membership from 15 to 38

This education section manages to show plenty of marketing relevant skills:

  • The ability to write and research (particularly on a deadline)
  • An understanding of how advertising works and its history
  • Public speaking and presentation skills
  • Organization and leadership

And all without a marketing degree or certification.

In general, the skills on your resume should match what the job description is asking for as closely as possible (more on how to do that below). But how should you show your skills?

First, don’t just list them. Simply stating that you’re “hard working” or good with “Google Analytics” doesn’t mean very much. As much as possible, make sure you include examples and/or real examples which demonstrate your skills.

But that doesn’t mean you don’t need to label them. Most bigger companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). These scan resumes for set keywords, so channel your inner SEO writer and make sure they’re in there.

Now which skills should you consider?

  • A strong grasp of statistics

  • Email automation platforms like Mailchimp
  • Zapier (because what can’t a marketer do with it?)

For hard skills, certification, educational experience, or an example of you getting results by applying the skill should suffice.

8 marketing soft skills every marketer needs

  • Adaptability
  • Self-motivation
  • Organization
  • Working well in teams
  • Patience and tenacity (especially for SEO)

Showing you have a soft skill is certainly trickier. A dedicated section in which you list your soft skills and include an example of when you demonstrated that skill is the most effective technique.

The skills you present on your marketing resume should always be based on the job description. Here’s a section taken from a real marketing job description as an example:

“Core duties include [[producing, implementing, and tracking campaigns]] needed to [[achieve company sales goals]] and [[engaging with customers]]. Others include updating [[database]] with contact information, researching and compiling [[mailing lists]], and assisting with [[monthly reports]].”

Based on this, you can see you’ll need the following skills:

  • Experience with every stage of creating and implementing marketing campaigns.
  • A track record of hitting set goals.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of how to work with databases and SQL.
  • Familiarity with a program like Mailchimp and email marketing experience.
  • Writing and presentation skills to show you can put together monthly reports that won’t put anyone to sleep.

In most marketing positions, being certified in areas like Hubspot or Google Analytics is important. It shows that you have a grasp of the most important elements of those fundamental tools. But where should these certifications go on your marketing resume?

It depends. If you have just one or two certifications, you can include them in your resume header. If you have more, it makes sense to dedicate a separate section to them.

Working with a mentor can help you develop the skills and practices you need to succeed in digital marketing. However, first you need to be clear about why you’re looking for a mentor. What skill do you want to develop? How can this particular mentor help you develop this particular skill? 

It’s not enough to “cold call” potential mentors. Do your research on them. What type of online presence do they have? Find their unique selling point (USP) so that you can refer to that when you approach them. 

Set limits on how much you hope to get from them. Perhaps all you want is 20 minutes of their time. Or maybe you want a short monthly catchup call. Be clear that you’re not looking for a time-intensive ongoing commitment. 

Also, what will the mentor see when they search for your own online brand? What value can you offer them? Try to pitch the proposed mentoring as an information exchange, where you share your insights with each other.

Top tip: Think about finding an accountability partner. This is a peer who works with you to ensure you are both setting realistic SMART goals and achieving them.

3. Work on your AI skills

Look for ways to harness the power of AI to boost your career. This could involve developing your own AI skills – becoming an expert prompt engineer, for example. Or you could use AI for some of your more mundane tasks so that you can devote more time to upskilling. 

Use AI to market yourself

You can use AI tools to better market yourself. For example, you can use AI to help you rewrite your CV or LinkedIn profile based on a specific job role you’re interested in or even a specific job description that you’re applying for.

Top tip: Never forget the Golden Rule of AI prompting: the better the input, the better the output. Carefully craft your prompts so that they’ll meet  your specific needs. Don’t rely on generic prompts.

Use AI to prepare for interview questions

Did you know you can use AI tools to help you prepare for likely interview questions? For example, you could feed the job description into a tool like ChatGPT and ask it to generate some likely interview questions based on that job description. This can be a great way to prepare for the dreaded competency-based questions! 

Role play with AI

Another great way to use AI when hoping to boost your career is to use it to “role play” in preparation for an interview. Having used AI to predict what questions you’re likely to be asked, you can then have a natural language conversation with it based on these questions. And you can even ask AI to assess your answers.

Use AI help to write your CV

You should still write a specific CV for every job you apply for. This can be a time-consuming task but with the power of AI, you have no excuse for not customizing your CV for whatever role you’re applying for! And, while you’re at it, why not use AI to update your LinkedIn profile at the same time? Keep in mind the outputs might not be perfect, so proofread… and then proofread again.

Remember that not everybody is using AI yet to further their careers. If you’re already getting skilled at boosting your profile with AI, you’ve just nudged yourself a little further ahead of the pack.

4. Cultivate a positive mindset

When looking to boost your career, it helps to cultivate a positive mindset. To propel yourself, always keep in mind this useful acronym, VGE: your vision, goals, and execution:

  • Vision : Where do you want to be in one, two, or five years’ time? Be clear and specific about what you want to achieve. Think strategically about your career. ( Vision boards can help you clarify your career vision.)
  • Goals : What goals do you need to set to achieve your vision. Are your goals SMART? Can you use AI to finesse them? (You could use mindmaps to help you see how your different goals relate to your vision.)
  • Execution : What steps do you need to take to meet your goals? Do you have the necessary skills and resources? What new skills do you need to develop?  What people do you need to talk to? (You could use flow charts to track the resources and skills needed to meet different goals.)

Embrace the mistakes you make. You're going to make a lot of mistakes when you go through your career to try and get a job. You're going to get a lot of rejection. This is when you have to apply a growth mindset: What did I learn from this? What good is in the bad here? 

Developing a positive mindset and being willing to put in the effort to reach your goals can reap long-term benefits. Mindset is for life, so cultivate a growth mindset that propels you forwards. Look ahead with optimism to the next challenges on your career path. And be willing to nurture the skills needed to feed that mindset, such as critical thinking, leadership, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and resilience. 

5. Develop habits for success

How do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time. 

If you ever feel overwhelmed by the effort apparently needed to boost your career, take a step back and think about what small habits you can start encouraging to position yourself for your next career move.

  • Cultivate a positive mindset : See challenges as opportunities. Note what skills you need to overcome these challenges and set aside time to develop them.
  • Carve out time each day dedicated to career development: As mentioned earlier, get in the habit of carving out a section of time each day to devote to working on your career. This could be during your break or on your daily commute. 
  • Mentor others : If you’re not currently in a leadership position, you could develop leadership skills by offering to mentor someone. 
  • Upskill : There’s a trove of excellent training videos online. Choose a skill you want to develop and dedicate time each day to honing your USP.

Top tip : Habits are how you get things done. And often, you have to remove a bad habit to start a good habit. It's like a savings account. It compounds every day with a little bit of interest and, over time, that amounts to something significant.

Final tips for a career boost

Boosting your career is not a matter of luck. It requires planning, effort, and time. Here are some final tips to help you prepare for the next stage of your career:

  • Have a vision : Know where you want to be in five years’ time. 
  • Research your dream companies : List 20 companies that you want to work for. Narrow down the list and find out all you can about those companies.
  • Find a mentor: Your mentor or accountability partner can help you persevere through the tough times. You could consider becoming a mentor yourself.
  • Start networking: Find two events to go to in the next three weeks. Start networking. Get out there and meet people. You'd be surprised, serendipitously, what might happen.

I Tried 10 AI Project Management Tools to See if They’re Worth It (Results & Recommendations)

AI project management tools simplify decision-making, keep projects rolling, and streamline communications. Pick the right project management tool, and you could save hundreds — even thousands — per year.

I started in digital project management nine years ago, and AI project management tools were unheard of. The project management role was different than it is today.

Project managers were doing a lot of manual admin and repetitive tasks while keeping everything together and bringing those all-important soft skills to clients and internal teams who were busy getting the job done.

It was a lot. If you’re reading this, you might still be working like that: more spreadsheets than you can bear to think about, project managers stressed with deliverables and shaky briefs, leaving the team to use their best guess.

Today, my workflow relies on AI tools to keep my clients and team happy.

The tools take much of the project management, leaving me and the team with the mental capacity to do what humans do best: build and nurture relationships, send thoughtful updates, and deliver even faster than we could ten years ago.

With the right AI tool, your workflow could look more streamlined with happier staff at work.

Naturally, the AI project management tool you select will depend on how you want to use it, but this article should give you a solid guide for choosing the right AI project management tool for you.

I’ve included my review of each tool, how I found it, the AI features, the price, and who I think it’s best for.

What does AI project management software do?

AI project management software can help manage and organize projects and teams.

They’re commonly used for automating routine tasks, managing production schedules, storing files against projects and tasks, and providing a central hub with all content related to a project.

With the rise of AI, you can automate workflows, remove decision fatigue with predictive analysis, bolster productivity, and essentially hire a digital assistant who’s there to support you every day.

Project management tools are worth every penny and will pay for themselves in productivity. But if you’re worried about budgets, plenty of brilliant free project management tools exist.

I’ve tested AI project management and many other marketing tools for years. I have to admit it: I love trying and testing tools.

It’s almost a problem because, in the digital world, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed by choice and distracted by the next amazing new development.

But I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon. In fact, I committed myself to try more tools in the future.

Embracing the development of new tools is a fast track to an easier life, a streamlined business, and a to-do list that is as satisfying as it is productive. And, in case you’re wondering, it’s not just me saying this.

Of those surveyed in Hubspot’s State of AI report , respondents estimated they save two hours and 24 minutes per day when using AI compared to not. Automating manual tasks is estimated to save two hours and 16 minutes per day.

The time saved using AI is significant. All you need to do is find the one that suits you and your needs, and I’ve run extensive tests to help you out.

When I’m testing AI project management tools, I want a tool that:

  • Feels intuitive to use.
  • Manages projects, tasks, and sub-tasks.
  • Makes my team feel happy (and not overwhelmed!).
  • Streamlines communications related to projects and/or tasks.
  • Has integration options so that my business can scale with the tool.

I judged the tools tested in this article by these factors:

  • How well the tool replicates or replaces human action.
  • AI functionality.

The scenario is close to my actual life as a marketer. I run many projects with fully remote teams internally and externally (my team and the client’s team).

How I Discovered Trello

Trello was a tool I used many years ago. It was the first project management tool I was introduced to in 2011. I used Trello to manage content as part of a small marketing agency.

How Trello Supported My Project Management

I still use Trello today. It’s in my project management arsenal, even with Asana for client projects.

I like Trello because it is simple. For clients who don’t have many projects, I turn to Trello. It’s intuitive and easy to use, people get on board with it quickly, and the free package is enough for how I use it.

I don’t think Trello suits companies looking to scale, but it's perfect for small projects or teams.

Strategy AI

Tello’s Strategy AI helps with general project management and productivity. You can use the software to control who sees what project, and projects or tasks are marked with priority to keep the team working on the most important tasks first.

Trello is one of the cheapest project management tools. It is also one of the most simple.

How OneCal Supported My Project Management

While OneCal isn’t managing projects, it is keeping my workload manageable and the monotony of checking multiple calendars at bay. This means I can go to any calendar for an accurate display of what’s happening in all of my calendars.

Ultimately, it saves me a lot of time and rids me of calendar anxiety.

For those who don’t use Motion, OneCal also has a booking system.

Once you’ve integrated OneCal with your calendars, you’ll have synced calendars everywhere .

You can set up a booking system so your meeting guests can book a slot in your calendar at a time that suits you (and them!).

With this system, you can set buffer times and avoid back-to-back meetings, and your guests can easily see available slots in their time zones.

An ex-Googler shares the resume that landed him the job — and what he would change on it 10 years later

  • Henry Wang's 2013 resume landed him interviews from Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, and Google.
  • In hindsight, Wang would have added a summary and result-oriented phrases to his resume.
  • Wang worked at Google for four years, first in policy and then in marketing.

Henry Wang was in his first year out of college, having graduated from the University of California, Irvine, when his boss gave him a suggestion.

Wang's manager at the City of New York advised him to try his hand at legal work before applying to law school. He agreed and worked as a litigation paralegal at a law firm for a year.

"That's when I realized I hate what lawyers do. I don't want to be a lawyer," Wang told Business Insider in a video call.

Looking for a more business-related career, Wang picked up consulting and investment banking books. He also created a resume that ended up getting him interviews at Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, and Google.

At Google, Wang says he went through seven rounds of interviews.

"When I did the Google Hangout interview, I dressed up. I was like: I am not going to leave any room for error," he said. "I even had my slacks and my dress shoes on, just in case they told me to tilt the camera down."

It paid off: In 2013, Wang got an offer to work in Google's policy division.

Wang's resume at the time followed a format well-known amongst college students and those in policy: It was one page long, and written in Times New Roman. It began with a section on education and a larger one dedicated to his two work experiences.

Here's the resume that got him the job:

But now, roughly 10 years on, Wang reexamined that resume — and he says he'd do some things differently.

"Looking back, I think there needs to be a story to my resume. Right now, I'm just listing where I went to school, what my experiences were without really conveying what's the story that I want to tell," Wang said about his 2013 resume.

Here's what he would change:

Declutter: "When I look at this, my eyes kind of hurt. There's a lot of text and its all very packed together. I could use a more clean font that is easy to read, like Arial, Open Sans or Lato," Wang said.

Minimize the work for the recruiter: "I would have an introduction blurb about myself so the recruiter or interviewer does not have to read through everything," Wang said. "I would summarize my experience into two to three sentences at the very beginning, so it's almost like a mini cover letter."

Lead with the new: " At this time, I had already been working two years, which means I could move education below and lead with experience."

Show your accomplishments, not your work: Wang said he'd focus less on listing tasks, and more on explaining how his tasks became accomplishments. "For example, for litigation paralegal, I would have a short blurb saying, 'Managed and owned legal workflow for high profile family law cases from discovery to trial,'" he said.

Tailor for what you want: " Pick your battles — not every single work experience is going to be equal," Wang said. Because he was applying for a policy role at Google, he says he should have emphasized his policy experience over his time in community service.

It's not all negative, though. "One thing I appreciate about this resume is that even though there's a lot of information, I over communicated rather than under-communicated," he said.

Wang worked at Google's policy division and later as a product marketing manager. He left the company in 2017 and now runs his own business consulting AI and crypto startups.
