Research paper citation refers to the act of acknowledging and referencing a previously published work in a scholarly or academic paper . When citing sources, researchers provide information that allows readers to locate the original source, validate the claims or arguments made in the paper, and give credit to the original author(s) for their work.

The citation may include the author’s name, title of the publication, year of publication, publisher, and other relevant details that allow readers to trace the source of the information. Proper citation is a crucial component of academic writing, as it helps to ensure accuracy, credibility, and transparency in research.

How to Cite Research Paper

There are several formats that are used to cite a research paper. Follow the guide for the Citation of a Research Paper:

Chicago/Turabian style

Please note that there are two main variations of the Chicago style: the author-date system and the notes and bibliography system. I will provide examples for both systems below.

Purpose of Research Paper Citation

The purpose of citing sources in a research paper is to give credit to the original authors and acknowledge their contribution to your work. By citing sources, you are also demonstrating the validity and reliability of your research by showing that you have consulted credible and authoritative sources. Citations help readers to locate the original sources that you have referenced and to verify the accuracy and credibility of your research. Additionally, citing sources is important for avoiding plagiarism, which is the act of presenting someone else’s work as your own. Proper citation also shows that you have conducted a thorough literature review and have used the existing research to inform your own work. Overall, citing sources is an essential aspect of academic writing and is necessary for building credibility, demonstrating research skills, and avoiding plagiarism.

There are several advantages of research paper citation, including:

What is APA?

APA style was created by the American Psychological Association. It is a set of rules for publications, including research papers.

In APA, you must "cite" sources that you have paraphrased, quoted or otherwise used to write your research paper. Cite your sources in two places:

  • In the body of your paper where you add a brief in-text citation.
  • In the Reference list at the end of your paper where you give more complete information for the source.

Below is a summary of the major changes in the 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual.

Essay Format:

  • Font - While you still can use Times New Roman 12, you are free to use other fonts. Calibri 11, Arial 11, Lucida Sans 10, and Georgia 11 are all acceptable.
  • Headers - No running headers are required for student papers.
  • Tables and Figures - There is a standardized format for both tables and figures.

Style, Grammar, Usage:

  • Singular "they" required in two situations: when used by a known person as their personal pronoun or when the gender of a singular person is not known.
  • Use only one space after a sentence-ending period.

Citation Style:

  • Developed the 'Four Elements of a Reference" (Author, Date, Title, Source) to help writers to create references for source types not explicitly examined in the APA Manual.
  • Three or more authors can be abbreviated to First author, et al. on the first citation.
  • Up to 20 authors are spelled out in the References List.
  • Publisher location is not required for books
  • Ebook platform, format, or device is not required for eBooks.  
  • Library database names are generally not required
  • No "doi:" prefix, simply include the doi.
  • All hyperlinks retain the https://
  • Links can be "live" in blue with underline or black without underlining

Commonly Used Terms

Citing : The process of acknowledging the sources of your information and ideas.

DOI (doi) : Some electronic content, such as online journal articles, is assigned a unique number called a Digital Object Identifier (DOI or doi). Items can be tracked down online using their doi.

In-Text Citation : A brief note at the point where information is used from a source to indicate where the information came from. An in-text citation should always match more detailed information that is available in the Reference List.

Paraphrasing : Taking information that you have read and putting it into your own words.

Plagiarism : Taking, using, and passing off as your own, the ideas or words of another.

Quoting : The copying of words of text originally published elsewhere. Direct quotations generally appear in quotation marks and end with a citation.

Reference : Details about one cited source.

Reference List : Contains details on ALL the sources cited in a text or essay, and supports your research and/or premise.

Retrieval Date : Used for websites where content is likely to change over time (e.g. Wikis), the retrieval date refers to the date you last visited the website.

Why citing is important

It's important to cite sources you used in your research for several reasons:

  • To show your reader you've done proper research by listing sources you used to get your information
  • To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas
  • To avoid plagiarism by quoting words and ideas used by other authors
  • To allow your reader to track down the sources you used by citing them accurately in your paper by way of footnotes, a bibliography or reference list

About citations

Citing a source means that you show, within the body of your text, that you took words, ideas, figures, images, etc. from another place.

Citations are a short way to uniquely identify a published work (e.g. book, article, chapter, web site).  They are found in bibliographies and reference lists and are also collected in article and book databases.

Citations consist of standard elements, and contain all the information necessary to identify and track down publications, including:

  • author name(s)
  • titles of books, articles, and journals

  • Facts, figures, ideas, or other information that is not common knowledge

Publications that must be cited include:  books, book chapters, articles, web pages, theses, etc.

Another person's exact words should be quoted and cited to show proper credit

Avoiding plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when you borrow another's words (or ideas) and do not acknowledge that you have done so. In this culture, we consider our words and ideas intellectual property; like a car or any other possession, we believe our words belong to us and cannot be used without our permission.

Plagiarism is a very serious offense. If it is found that you have plagiarized -- deliberately or inadvertently -- you may face serious consequences. In some instances, plagiarism has meant that students have had to leave the institutions where they were studying.

The best way to avoid plagiarism is to cite your sources - both within the body of your paper and in a bibliography of sources you used at the end of your paper.

What is a Citation?

A citation identifies for the reader the original source for an idea, information, or image that is referred to in a work.

  • In the body of a paper, the  in-text citation  acknowledges the source of information used.
  • At the end of a paper, the citations are compiled on a  References  or  Works Cited  list. A basic citation includes the author, title, and publication information of the source.

Why Should You Cite?

Quoting Are you quoting two or more consecutive words from a source? Then the original source should be cited and the words or phrase placed in quotes. 

Paraphrasing If an idea or information comes from another source,  even if you put it in your own words , you still need to credit the source.  General vs. Unfamiliar Knowledge You do not need to cite material which is accepted common knowledge. If in doubt whether your information is common knowledge or not, cite it. Formats We usually think of books and articles. However, if you use material from web sites, films, music, graphs, tables, etc. you'll also need to cite these as well.

Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of someone else as your own without proper acknowledgment of the source. When you work on a research paper and use supporting material from works by others, it's okay to quote people and use their ideas, but you do need to correctly credit them. Even when you summarize or paraphrase information found in books, articles, or Web pages, you must acknowledge the original author.

When you’re writing a research paper, you’ll use a variety of sources to find information. You might find that you end up using other people’s research papers as sources of information for your own work. You need to know how to cite a research paper properly.

Using text citations tells readers where you got your information, and help build a sense of trust, allowing the reader to feel confident that you haven’t falsified the information. You have to prove that you’ve done the research and found data to back up the claims you’re making.

Writing a paper without giving credit to people whose work you’re using is plagiarism. Unless you’re citing a direct quote you want to change the language enough, by putting the quote in your own words, so it sounds like original content. Why Text Citations are Important

In general, it’s a kindness to cite your sources. The people who created them did a lot of work, so it’s wrong to claim ownership of their ideas and information. But it’s also an ethical issue that can have major repercussions.

When you’re citing other people’s research papers, make sure the source is legitimate. You should only use peer-reviewed journals so you know the article has gone through edits and fact-checking. Something identified as a research paper that is only on a blog or message board isn’t always a reliable source.

Many students like to use  Wikipedia  because there’s so much information available from one source. However, Wikipedia allows users to edit the information. What you read in a specific entry might not be true. It’s best to scroll down to the works cited and go to the original source yourself. If you can’t find a reliable, original source for the information, you shouldn’t use it.

Using the Various Citation Styles

The information used in any citation is basically the same across each style guide. The formatting and order of some elements may vary, so it’s important to know the difference between Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA), and Chicago Styles.

The style you use depends on what type of writing you’re doing. All will use these basic elements in some form or another:

Source name

Volume and edition

Publication date

Page numbers

Publisher name

City and country of the publisher

URL and DOI for web pages and digital sources

The date you accessed the material

In addition to a reference list at the end of your work, you’ll also use in-text citations. Whenever you reference an idea or data that isn’t yours, you cite it. Each style has different types of in-text citations as well. Read on to find out about each citation format.

You’ll likely use the  MLA citation guide  if you’re writing papers in the humanities, such as for language arts, literary criticism, cultural studies, and more. The current edition of the MLA Handbook is the ninth because the style constantly evolves. As new technology creates new potential sources, MLA adds information to help students and researchers cite everything correctly.

The MLA Handbook has instructions on how to cite song lyrics, social media posts, and digital images, along with all of the standard research outlets. The book also gives detailed information on how to cite a research paper.

The MLA Handbook includes information about how to format your reference page. Use a 12-pt standard font like Times New Roman, so the text in italics is clearly different from the regular font. Center the title, Works Cited, at the top of the page. Your last name and page number are in the top right corner, and the reference page always comes at the end of your document.

Alphabetize citations according to the last name of the author. Left-align the citations and double-space them with no extra lines between each entry. When a citation goes beyond a single line, use a hanging indent to format it correctly. This lets the reader know it’s still the same citation continuing on.

Citing a Research Paper in MLA Style

When you’re citing a research paper in MLA style, you start with the author’s full name, putting the last name of the author first, followed by the title of the research paper in quotation marks. Next comes the the title of the journal that published the paper in italics, followed by the volume number, issue number, and date of publication.

You’ll also include the page number since the paper is in a journal with many pages. If you found the source online, include the digital object identifier or DOI. The DOI is a way to give a document a permanent web address so people reading your work can easily find the source.

MLA format also asks you to include the date you accessed online materials. Doing so gives your reader more information about when you read the research if it changed since that date. Here is an example of a research paper citation in MLA style:

Writer, Maria. “My Research Paper.” Research Journal, vol 3, no. 4, 2020, pp. 7-9. doi:12.34/mfs.12.34. Accessed 13 March 2021.

If the work wasn’t published online, you could stop your citation after the page numbers.

Sometimes you might find research papers that aren’t published in a scholarly journal. You can still use those in your work, but the MLA citation will look different. You’ll still put the last name of the author first, but instead of putting the title of the research paper in quotation marks, you’ll put it in italics.

Here is an example of an unpublished research paper citation in MLA style:

Writer, Maria. My Research Paper. 2020, http://websiteused.com . Accessed 13 March 2021.

In-Text Citations for a Research Paper in MLA Style

When you’re working with the MLA format, an in-text reference requires a parenthetical citation.

If you refer to someone else’s research in a sentence, either with a direct quote or by paraphrasing, you need to give that author credit. At the end of the sentence where you use the information, you’ll put the author’s information in parenthesis and then put the sentence’s ending punctuation.

You use the author’s last name and the page number where you found the information for in-text citations. Then anyone reading your work can go to your Works Cited page, find the entry by the author’s last name, and access the document themselves. The page number directs them to where you got the specific information, so they don’t have to read the whole paper to find it. Here is an example of an in-text citation in MLA style:

Over 80% of the city’s garbage ended up in the ocean (Writer, 8).

You might mention the author’s name in your sentence. In that case, the parenthetical citation only needs to have the page numbers for reference. Here is an example:

According to Maria Writer, over 80% of the city’s garbage went into the ocean (8).

Researchers in the social science field, like sociology, anthropology, and psychology, use the  APA style  in their work. Like the MLA Handbook, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association has gone through changes over the years. It’s currently on the 7th edition.

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association also tells you how to format your reference page. In MLA style, this is the Works Cited page. For APA style, it’s either the Reference List or Reference Page.

This page uses the same font style as the rest of the paper but starts on its own page with a number in the top right corner. The title of the page is bold and centered at the top and should simply read “References.”

List citations in alphabetical order by author’s last name regardless of the type of source. Each citation is double-spaced and has a hanging indent if it goes beyond one line.

Citing a Research Paper in APA Style

When you use a research paper in your work, you need to include it on your APA references page at the end of your document.

An APA citation includes the same information as the MLA format but in a different order. The citation starts with the author’s last name but only uses their first initial. Then comes the year of publication in parenthesis.

The paper’s title follows, then the title of the journal in italics. You also include the journal volume, issue number, and page numbers. As with MLA citations, include a DOI if you found the research paper online. Here is an example of a published research paper cited in APA format:

Writer, M. (2020). My Research Paper. Research Journal, 3(4), 7-9. doi:12.34/mfs.12.34

If the paper isn’t published in a journal, you can still use it in your work with a proper citation. Here is an example:

In-Text Citations for a Research Paper in APA Style

In-text citations in the APA format differ from MLA style. You still put it in parenthesis, but you include different information. For APA parentheticals, include the author’s last name and the paper’s year of publication. This method applies when you’re summarizing or paraphrasing the author’s idea. Here is an example of an in-text citation for a research paper in APA style:

Over 80% of the city’s garbage went into the ocean (Writer, 2020).

If you’re using a direct quote from the work you need to include the page number so the reader can find the quotation. Here is an example:

Maria Writer said, “Over 80% of the city’s garbage is going into the ocean” (2020, p. 8).

Chicago Style

Chicago Style  got its name from the University of Chicago, where the style originated. Writers use this format for works in the field of history, but you can also use it for the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

MLA style has a Works Cited page, APA has References, and Chicago Style differs because it includes a Bibliography. The page comes at the end of your work with a page number in the top right corner. The title, “Bibliography,” is bold and centered at the top.

You will single-space your citations, but you’ll add an extra line between each entry. As with the other reference pages, you’ll left-align the work and use a hanging indent when a citation continues onto a second line.

Citing a Research Paper in Chicago Style

Citations in Chicago Style are a mix of MLA and APA formats. It’s easiest to follow this template:

As with other styles, you can reference an unpublished research paper as a document. Here is an example:

In both instances, if there are multiple authors for a paper, list the rest of the authors in normal format. For example:

Author, Alan, Stanley Sample, and Maria Writer. 2020. “My Research Paper.” Research Journal 3 (4): 7-9. doi:12.34/mfs.12.34.

In-Text Citations for a Research Paper in Chicago Style

An in-text citation in Chicago Style is much simpler than both MLA and APA formats. You only need to include the last name of the author and year of publication in parenthesis with no comma in between them. For example:

Almost 80% of the city’s garbage goes into the ocean (Writer 2020).

You’ll include the page number for specificity if you’re quoting the author. Here’s an example:

Maria Writer said, “Over 80% of the city’s garbage is going into the ocean” (2020, 8).

You can also use endnotes in Chicago Style. A citation refers the reader to your source, but an endnote includes a bit of an explanation of why you used it. The information included in an endnote would disrupt the flow of your paper, but it’s still something you want the reader to know.

Knowing when you need to cite a source helps you manage your research. Anytime you find information that you’re going to paraphrase, summarize, or quote in your work, you need to cite the source. The full citation will go on your reference page, but you’ll need an in-text citation where you use the information in your paper.

When you’re stating something that is  common knowledge , there’s no need to make a citation. Common knowledge is something that your reader would believe without needing proof. You can check if something is common knowledge by searching for it and finding it mentioned, without a citation, in at least five sources.

When writing a paper for a research project, you may need to cite a research paper you used as a reference. The basic information included in your citation will be the same across all styles. A Quick Guide to Harvard Referencing | Citation Examples

Referencing is an important part of academic writing. It tells your readers what sources you’ve used and how to find them.

Harvard is the most common referencing style used in UK universities. In Harvard style, the author and year are cited in-text, and full details of the source are given in a reference list .

A Harvard in-text citation appears in brackets beside any quotation or paraphrase of a source. It gives the last name of the author(s) and the year of publication, as well as a page number or range locating the passage referenced, if applicable:

Note that ‘p.’ is used for a single page, ‘pp.’ for multiple pages (e.g. ‘pp. 1–5’).

An in-text citation usually appears immediately after the quotation or paraphrase in question. It may also appear at the end of the relevant sentence, as long as it’s clear what it refers to.

When your sentence already mentions the name of the author, it should not be repeated in the citation:

When you cite a source with up to three authors, cite all authors’ names. For four or more authors, list only the first name, followed by ‘ et al. ’:

Sources with no page numbers

Some sources, such as websites , often don’t have page numbers. If the source is a short text, you can simply leave out the page number. With longer sources, you can use an alternate locator such as a subheading or paragraph number if you need to specify where to find the quote:

Multiple citations at the same point

When you need multiple citations to appear at the same point in your text – for example, when you refer to several sources with one phrase – you can present them in the same set of brackets, separated by semicolons. List them in order of publication date:

If you cite multiple sources by the same author which were published in the same year, it’s important to distinguish between them in your citations. To do this, insert an ‘a’ after the year in the first one you reference, a ‘b’ in the second, and so on:

A bibliography or reference list appears at the end of your text. It lists all your sources in alphabetical order by the author’s last name, giving complete information so that the reader can look them up if necessary.

The reference entry starts with the author’s last name followed by initial(s). Only the first word of the title is capitalised (as well as any proper nouns).

As with in-text citations, up to three authors should be listed; when there are four or more, list only the first author followed by ‘ et al. ’:

Reference list entries vary according to source type, since different information is relevant for different sources. Formats and examples for the most commonly used source types are given below.

  • Entire book
  • Book chapter
  • Translated book
  • Edition of a book

Journal articles

  • Print journal
  • Online-only journal with DOI
  • Online-only journal with no DOI
  • General web page
  • Online article or blog
  • Social media post

Sometimes you won’t have all the information you need for a reference. This section covers what to do when a source lacks a publication date or named author.

No publication date

When a source doesn’t have a clear publication date – for example, a constantly updated reference source like Wikipedia or an obscure historical document which can’t be accurately dated – you can replace it with the words ‘no date’:

Note that when you do this with an online source, you should still include an access date, as in the example.

When a source lacks a clearly identified author, there’s often an appropriate corporate source – the organisation responsible for the source – whom you can credit as author instead, as in the Google and Wikipedia examples above.

When that’s not the case, you can just replace it with the title of the source in both the in-text citation and the reference list:

Harvard referencing uses an author–date system. Sources are cited by the author’s last name and the publication year in brackets. Each Harvard in-text citation corresponds to an entry in the alphabetised reference list at the end of the paper.

Vancouver referencing uses a numerical system. Sources are cited by a number in parentheses or superscript. Each number corresponds to a full reference at the end of the paper.

A Harvard in-text citation should appear in brackets every time you quote, paraphrase, or refer to information from a source.

The citation can appear immediately after the quotation or paraphrase, or at the end of the sentence. If you’re quoting, place the citation outside of the quotation marks but before any other punctuation like a comma or full stop.

In Harvard referencing, up to three author names are included in an in-text citation or reference list entry. When there are four or more authors, include only the first, followed by ‘ et al. ’

Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a difference in meaning:

  • A reference list only includes sources cited in the text – every entry corresponds to an in-text citation .
  • A bibliography also includes other sources which were consulted during the research but not cited.

What is APA Style?

APA style was created by social and behavioral scientists to standardize scientific writing. APA style is most often used in:

  • psychology,
  • social sciences (sociology, business), and

If you're taking courses in any of these areas, be prepared to use APA style.

In October 2019, the American Psychological Association made radical changes its style, especially with regard to the format and citation rules for students writing academic papers. Use this guide to learn how to format and cite your papers using APA Style, 7th edition.

  • sans serif fonts such as 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, or 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode, or
  • serif fonts such as 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, or normal (10-point) Computer Modern (the default font for LaTeX)
  • There are exceptions for the  title page ,  tables ,  figures ,  footnotes , and  displayed equations .
  • Margins :  Use 1-in. margins on every side of the page.
  • Align the text of an APA Style  paper to the left margin . Leave the right margin uneven, or “ragged.”
  • Do not use full justification for student papers.
  • Do not insert hyphens (manual breaks) in words at the end of line. However, it is acceptable if your word-processing program automatically inserts breaks in long hyperlinks (such as in a DOI or URL in a reference list entry).
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph of text 0.5 in . from the left margin. Use the tab key or the automatic paragraph-formatting function of your word-processing program to achieve the indentation (the default setting is likely already 0.5 in.). Do not use the space bar to create indentation. 
  • There are exceptions for the  title page ,  section labels ,  abstract ,  block quotations ,  headings ,  tables and figures ,  reference list , and  appendices .

Paper Elements

Student papers generally include, at a minimum: 

  • Title Page (2.3)
  • Text (2.11)
  • References  (2.12)

Student papers may include additional elements such as tables and figures depending on the assignment. So, please check with your teacher!

Student papers generally  DO NOT  include the following unless your teacher specifically requests it:

  • Running head
  • Author note

Number your pages consecutively starting with page 1. Each section begins on a new page. Put the pages in the following order:

  • Page 1: Title page
  • Page 2: Abstract (if your teacher requires an abstract)
  • Page 3: Text 
  • References begin on a new page after the last page of text
  • Footnotes begin on a new page after the references (if your teacher requires footnotes)
  • Tables begin each on a new page after the footnotes (if your teacher requires tables) 
  • Figures begin on a new page after the tables (if your teacher requires figures)
  • Appendices begin on a new page after the tables and/or figures (if your teacher requires appendices)

APA Style uses five (5) levels of headings to help you organize your paper and allow your audience to identify its key points easily. Levels of headings establish the hierarchy of your sections just like you did in your paper outline.

APA tells us to use "only the number of headings necessary to differentiate distinct section in your paper." Therefore, the number of heading levels you create depends on the length and complexity of your paper.

Placement:  The reference list  appears at the end of the paper, on its own page(s). If your research paper ends on page 8, your References begin on page 9.

Heading:  Place the section label References  in bold at the top of the page, centered.

Arrangement:  Alphabetize entries by author's last name. If source has no named author, alphabetize by the title, ignoring A, An, or The. (9.44-9.48)

Spacing:  Like the rest of the APA paper, the reference list is double-spaced throughout. Be sure NOT to add extra spaces between citations.

Indentation:  To make citations easier to scan, add a  hanging indent  of 0.5 in. to any citation that runs more than one line. Use the paragraph-formatting function of your word processing program to create your hanging indent.

Where to find reference information for a journal article

References generally have four elements, each of which has a corresponding question for you to answer:

  • Author:   Who is responsible for this work? (9.7-9.12)
  • Date:   When was this work published? (9.13-9.17)
  • Title:   What is this work called? (9.18-9.22)
  • Source:   Where can I retrieve this work? (9.23-9.37)

By using these four elements and answering these four questions, you should be able to create a citation for any type of source.

Sometimes you won't be able to find all the elements required for your reference. In that case, see the  instructions in Table 9.1 of the APA style manual in section 9.4 or the APA Style website below:

  • Direct Quotation of Material Without Page Numbers

The DOI or URL is the final component of a reference list entry. Because so much scholarship is available and/or retrieved online, most reference list entries end with either a DOI or a URL.

  • A  DOI  is a unique alphanumeric string that identifies content and provides a persistent link to its location on the internet. DOIs can be found in database records and the reference lists of published works.
  • A  URL  specifies the location of digital information on the internet and can be found in the address bar of your internet browser. URLs in references should link directly to the cited work when possible.

When to Include DOIs and URLs:

  • Include a DOI for all works that have a DOI, regardless of whether you used the online version or the print version.
  • If an online work has both a DOI and a URL, include only the DOI.
  • For works without DOIs from websites (not including academic research databases), provide a URL in the reference (as long as the URL will work for readers).
  • For works without DOIs from most academic research databases, do not include a URL or database information in the reference because these works are widely available. The reference should be the same as the reference for a print version of the work.
  • For works from databases that publish original, proprietary material available only in that database (such as the UpToDate database) or for works of limited circulation in databases (such as monographs in the ERIC database), include the name of the database or archive and the URL of the work. If the URL requires a login or is session-specific (meaning it will not resolve for readers), provide the URL of the database or archive home page or login page instead of the URL for the work. (See APA Section 9.30 for more information). 
  • If the URL is no longer working or no longer provides readers access to the content you intend to cite, try to find an archived version using the Internet Archive , then use the archived URL. If there is no archived URL, do not use that resource.

Follow these guidelines from the APA Style website.

APA Style uses the  author–date citation system , in which a brief in-text citation points your reader to the full reference list entry at the end of your paper. The in-text citation appears within the body of the paper and briefly identifies the cited work by its author and date of publication. This method enables your reader to locate the corresponding entry in the alphabetical reference list at the end of your paper.

Each work you cite  must  appear in the reference list, and each work in the reference list must be cited in the text (or in a table, figure, footnote, or appendix) except for the following (See APA, 8.4):

  • Personal communications (8.9)
  • General mentions of entire websites, whole periodicals (8.22), and common software and apps (10.10) in the text do not require a citation or reference list entry.
  • The source of an epigraph does not usually appear in the reference list (8.35)
  • Quotations from your research participants do not need citations or reference list entries (8.36)
  • References included in a statistical meta-analysis, which are marked with an asterisk in the reference list, may be cited in the text (or not) at the author’s discretion. This exception is relevant only to authors who are conducting a meta-analysis (9.52).

Formatting Your In-Text Citations

Parenthetical and Narrative Citations: ( See APA Section  8.11)

In APA style you use the author-date citation system for citing references within your paper. You incorporate these references using either a  parenthetical   or a  narrative  style.

Parenthetical Citations

  • In parenthetical citations, the author name and publication date appear in parentheses, separated by a comma. (Jones, 2018)
  • A parenthetical citation can appear within or at the end of a sentence.
  • When the parenthetical citation is at the end of the sentence, put the period or other end punctuation after the closing parenthesis.
  • If there is no author, use the first few words of the reference list entry, usually the "Title" of the source: ("Autism," 2008) See APA 8.14
  • When quoting, always provide the author, year, and specific page citation or paragraph number for nonpaginated materials in the text (Santa Barbara, 2010, p. 243).  See APA 8.13
  • For most citations, the parenthetical reference is placed BEFORE the punctuation: Magnesium can be effective in treating PMS (Haggerty, 2012).

Narrative Citations 

In narrative citations, the author name or title of your source appears within your text and the publication date appears in parentheses immediately after the author name. 

  • Santa Barbara (2010) noted a decline in the approval of disciplinary spanking of 26 percentage points from 1968 to 1994.

What Is A Citation?

When to cite.

A citation is a reference to the source of information used in your research. Any time you directly quote, paraphrase or summarize the essential elements of someone else's idea in your work, an in-text citation should follow. An in-text citation is a brief notation within the text of your paper or presentation which refers the reader to a fuller notation, or end-of-paper citation , that provides all necessary details about that source of information. Direct quotations should be surrounded by quotations marks and are generally used when the idea you want to capture is best expressed by the source.  Paraphrasing and summarizing involve rewording an essential idea from someone else's work, usually to either condense the point or to make it better fit your writing style. You do not have to cite your own ideas, unless they have been published. And you do not have to cite  common knowledge , or information that most people in your audience would know without having to look it up.

In-Text Citations

In-text citations alert the reader to an idea from an outside source.  

Parenthetical Notes

In MLA and APA styles, in-text citations usually appear as parenthetical notes (sometimes called parenthetical documentation ). They are called parenthetical notes because brief information about the source, usually the author's name, year of publication, and page number, is enclosed in parentheses as follows:

In MLA and APA styles, in-text citations are associated with end-of-paper citations that provide full details about an information source. Note: Different source types and situations require different information within the parentheses. Refer to a style guide for the style you are using for details.

In Chicago and CSE styles, in-text citations usually appear as superscript numerals, or note numbers , as follows:

These note numbers are associated with full citations that can appear as footnotes (bottom of page), endnotes (end of chapter or paper), or lists of cited references at the end of the paper.  

End-of-Paper Citations

End-of-paper citations, as well as footnotes and endnotes, include  full details about a source of information.  Citations contain different pieces of identifying information about your source depending on what type of source it is. In academic research, your sources will most commonly be articles from scholarly journals, and the citation for an article typically includes:  

  • article title
  • publication information (journal title, date, volume, issue, pages, etc.)
  • DOI (digital object identifier).
  • URL of the information source itself
  • URL of the journal that published the article

There are many other types of sources you might use, including books, book chapters, films, song lyrics, musical scores, interviews, e-mails, blog entries, art works, lectures, websites and more. To determine which details are required for a citation for a particular source type, find that source type within the style guide for the citation style you are using. At the end of your research paper, full citations should be listed in order according to the citation style you are using:

  • In MLA style, this list is called a W orks Cited page.  
  • In APA style, it is called a References page.
  • In CSE style, it is called a C ited References page.
  • And, in Chicago style, there may be both a Notes page and a Bibliography page.

Citations  In Library Databases

When you search the library's databases for articles or e-books, the list of search results you see is actually a list of full citations. Instead of being formatted according to MLA, APA, CSE, or Chicago style, these citations are formatted according to the database vendor's style. It is up to you to take the source information you find in a library database (or elsewhere) and format it according to the citation style you are using.

Reference citations in text are covered on pages 261-268 of the Publication Manual. What follows are some general guidelines for referring to the works of others in your essay.

Note:  On pages 117-118, the Publication Manual suggests that authors of research papers should use the past tense or present perfect tense for signal phrases that occur in the literature review and procedure descriptions (for example, Jones (1998)  found  or Jones (1998)  has found ...). Contexts other than traditionally-structured research writing may permit the simple present tense (for example, Jones (1998)  finds ).

APA Citation Basics

When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, like, for example, (Jones, 1998). One complete reference for each source should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.

If you are referring to an idea from another work but  NOT  directly quoting the material, or making reference to an entire book, article or other work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication and not the page number in your in-text reference.

On the other hand, if you are directly quoting or borrowing from another work, you should include the page number at the end of the parenthetical citation. Use the abbreviation “p.” (for one page) or “pp.” (for multiple pages) before listing the page number(s). Use an en dash for page ranges. For example, you might write (Jones, 1998, p. 199) or (Jones, 1998, pp. 199–201). This information is reiterated below.

Regardless of how they are referenced, all sources that are cited in the text must appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.

In-text citation capitalization, quotes, and italics/underlining

  • Always capitalize proper nouns, including author names and initials: D. Jones.
  • If you refer to the title of a source within your paper, capitalize all words that are four letters long or greater within the title of a source:  Permanence and Change . Exceptions apply to short words that are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs:  Writing New Media ,  There Is Nothing Left to Lose .

( Note:  in your References list, only the first word of a title will be capitalized:  Writing new media .)

  • When capitalizing titles, capitalize both words in a hyphenated compound word:  Natural-Born Cyborgs .
  • Capitalize the first word after a dash or colon: "Defining Film Rhetoric: The Case of Hitchcock's  Vertigo ."
  • If the title of the work is italicized in your reference list, italicize it and use title case capitalization in the text:  The Closing of the American Mind ;  The Wizard of Oz ;  Friends .
  • If the title of the work is not italicized in your reference list, use double quotation marks and title case capitalization (even though the reference list uses sentence case): "Multimedia Narration: Constructing Possible Worlds;" "The One Where Chandler Can't Cry."

Short quotations

If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and page number for the reference (preceded by "p." for a single page and “pp.” for a span of multiple pages, with the page numbers separated by an en dash).

You can introduce the quotation with a signal phrase that includes the author's last name followed by the date of publication in parentheses.

If you do not include the author’s name in the text of the sentence, place the author's last name, the year of publication, and the page number in parentheses after the quotation.

Long quotations

Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer in a free-standing block of typewritten lines and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, indented 1/2 inch from the left margin, i.e., in the same place you would begin a new paragraph. Type the entire quotation on the new margin, and indent the first line of any subsequent paragraph within the quotation 1/2 inch from the new margin. Maintain double-spacing throughout, but do not add an extra blank line before or after it. The parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark.

Quotations from sources without pages

Direct quotations from sources that do not contain pages should not reference a page number. Instead, you may reference another logical identifying element: a paragraph, a chapter number, a section number, a table number, or something else. Older works (like religious texts) can also incorporate special location identifiers like verse numbers. In short: pick a substitute for page numbers that makes sense for your source.

Summary or paraphrase

If you are paraphrasing an idea from another work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your in-text reference and may omit the page numbers. APA guidelines, however, do encourage including a page range for a summary or paraphrase when it will help the reader find the information in a longer work.

A citation is a formal reference to a published or unpublished source that you consulted and obtained information from while writing your research paper. It refers to a source of information that supports a factual statement, proposition, argument, or assertion or any quoted text obtained from a book, article, web site, or any other type of material . In-text citations are embedded within the body of your paper and use a shorthand notation style that refers to a complete description of the item at the end of the paper. Materials cited at the end of a paper may be listed under the heading References, Sources, Works Cited, or Bibliography. Rules on how to properly cite a source depends on the writing style manual your professor wants you to use for the class [e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, etc.]. Note that some disciplines have their own citation rules [e.g., law].

English scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, once wrote, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”* Citations support learning how to "see further" through processes of intellectual discovery, critical thinking, and applying a deliberate method of navigating through the scholarly landscape by tracking how cited works are propagated by scholars over time and the subsequent ways this leads to the devarication of new knowledge.

Listed below are specific reasons why citing sources is an important part of doing good research.

  • Shows the reader where to find more information . Citations help readers expand their understanding and knowledge about the issues being investigated. One of the most effective strategies for locating authoritative, relevant sources about a research problem is to review materials cited in studies published by other authors. In this way, the sources you cite help the reader identify where to go to examine the topic in more depth and detail.
  • Increases your credibility as an author . Citations to the words, ideas, and arguments of scholars demonstrates that you have conducted a thorough review of the literature and, therefore, you are reporting your research results or proposing recommended courses of action from an informed and critically engaged perspective. Your citations offer evidence that you effectively contemplated, evaluated, and synthesized sources of information in relation to your conceptualization of the research problem.
  • Illustrates the non-linear and contested nature of knowledge creation . The sources you cite show the reader how you characterized the dynamics of prior knowledge creation relevant to the research problem and how you managed to effectively identify the contested relationships between problems and solutions proposed among scholars. Citations don't just list materials used in your study, they tell a story about how prior knowledge-making emerged from a constant state of creation, renewal, and transformation.
  • Reinforces your arguments . Sources cited in your paper provide the evidence that readers need to determine that you properly addressed the “So What?” question. This refers to whether you considered the relevance and significance of the research problem, its implications applied to creating new knowledge, and its importance for improving practice. In this way, citations draw attention to and support the legitimacy and originality of your own ideas.
  • Demonstrates that you "listened" to relevant conversations among scholars before joining in . Your citations tell the reader where you developed an understanding of the debates among scholars. They show how you educated yourself about ongoing conversations taking place within relevant communities of researchers before inserting your own ideas and arguments. In peer-reviewed scholarship, most of these conversations emerge within books, research reports, journal articles, and other cited works.
  • Delineates alternative approaches to explaining the research problem . If you disagree with prior research assumptions or you believe that a topic has been understudied or you find that there is a gap in how scholars have understood a problem, your citations serve as the source materials from which to analyze and present an alternative viewpoint or to assert that a different course of action should be pursued. In short, the materials you cite serve as the means by which to argue persuasively against long-standing assumptions propagated in prior studies.
  • Helps the reader understand contextual aspects of your research . Cited sources help readers understand the specific circumstances, conditions, and settings of the problem being investigated and, by extension, how your arguments can be fully understood and assessed. Citations place your line of reasoning within a specific contextualized framework based on how others have studied the problem and how you interpreted their findings in support of your overall research objectives.
  • Frames the development of concepts and ideas within the literature . No topic in the social and behavioral sciences rests in isolation from research that has taken place in the past. Your citations help the reader understand the growth and transformation of the theoretical assumptions, key concepts, and systematic inquiries that emerged prior to your engagement with the research problem.
  • Underscores what sources were most important to you . Your citations represent a set of choices made about what you determined to be the most important sources for understanding the topic. They not only list what you discovered, but why it matters and how the materials you chose to cite fit within the broader context of your research design and arguments. As part of an overall assessment of the study’s validity and reliability , the choices you make also helps the reader determine what research may have been excluded.
  • Provides evidence of interdisciplinary thinking . An important principle of good research is to extend your review of the literature beyond the predominant disciplinary space where scholars have examined a topic. Citations provide evidence that you have integrated epistemological arguments, observations, and/or the methodological strategies from other disciplines into your paper, thereby demonstrating that you understand the complex, interconnected nature of contemporary research problems.
  • Supports critical thinking and independent learning . Evaluating the authenticity, reliability, validity, and originality of prior research is an act of interpretation and introspective reasoning applied to assessing whether a source of information will contribute to understanding the problem in ways that are persuasive and align with your overall research objectives. Reviewing and citing prior studies represents a deliberate act of critically scrutinizing each source as part of your overall assessment of how scholars have confronted the research problem.
  • Honors the achievements of others . As Susan Blum recently noted,** citations not only identify sources used, they acknowledge the achievements of scholars within the larger network of research about the topic. Citing sources is a normative act of professionalism within academe and a way to highlight and recognize the work of scholars who likely do not obtain any tangible benefits or monetary value from their research endeavors.

Structure and Writing Style

Referencing your sources means systematically showing what information or ideas you acquired from another author’s work, and identifying where that information come from . You must cite research in order to do research, but at the same time, you must delineate what are your original thoughts and ideas and what are the thoughts and ideas of others. Citations help achieve this. Procedures used to cite sources vary among different fields of study. If not outlined in your course syllabus or writing assignment, always speak with your professor about what writing style for citing sources should be used for the class because it is important to fully understand the citation style to be used in your paper, and to apply it consistently. If your professor defers and tells you to "choose whatever you want, just be consistent," then choose the citation style you are most familiar with or that is appropriate to your major [e.g., use Chicago style if its a history class; use APA if its an education course; use MLA if it is literature or a general writing course].

GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. Are there any reasons I should avoid referencing other people's work? No. If placed in the proper context, r eferencing other people's research is never an indication that your work is substandard or lacks originality. In fact, the opposite is true. If you write your paper without adequate references to previous studies, you are signaling to the reader that you are not familiar with the literature on the topic, thereby, undermining the validity of your study and your credibility as a researcher. Including references in academic writing is one of the most important ways to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of how the research problem has been addressed. It is the intellectual packaging around which you present your thoughts and ideas to the reader.

2. What should I do if I find out that my great idea has already been studied by another researcher? It can be frustrating to come up with what you believe is a great topic only to find that it's already been thoroughly studied. However, do not become frustrated by this. You can acknowledge the prior research by writing in the text of your paper [see also Smith, 2002], then citing the complete source in your list of references. Use the discovery of prior studies as an opportunity to demonstrate the significance of the problem being investigated and, if applicable, as a means of delineating your analysis from those of others [e.g., the prior study is ten years old and doesn't take into account new variables]. Strategies for responding to prior research can include: stating how your study updates previous understandings about the topic, offering a new or different perspective, applying a different or innovative method of data gathering, and/or describing a new set of insights, guidelines, recommendations, best practices, or working solutions.

3. What should I do if I want to use an adapted version of someone else's work? You still must cite the original work. For example, maybe you are using a table of statistics from a journal article published in 1996 by author Smith, but you have altered or added new data to it. Reference the revised chart, such as, [adapted from Smith, 1996], then cite the complete source in your list of references. You can also use other terms in order to specify the exact relationship between the original source and the version you have presented, such as, "based on data from Smith [1996]...," or "summarized from Smith [1996]...." Citing the original source helps the reader locate where the information was first presented and under what context it was used as well as to evaluate how effectively you applied it to your own research.

4. What should I do if several authors have published very similar information or ideas? You can indicate that the idea or information can be found in the works of others by stating something similar to the following example: "Though many scholars have applied rational choice theory to understanding economic relations among nations [Smith, 1989; Jones, 1991; Johnson, 1994; Anderson, 2003], little attention has been given to applying the theory to examining the influence of non-governmental organizations in a globalized economy." If you only reference one author or only the most recent study, then your readers may assume that only one author has published on this topic, or more likely, they will conclude that you have not conducted a thorough literature review. Referencing all relevant authors of prior studies gives your readers a clear idea of the breadth of analysis you conducted in preparing to study the research problem. If there has been a significant number of prior studies on the topic, describe the most comprehensive and recent works because they will presumably discuss and reference the older studies. However, note in your review of the literature that there has been significant scholarship devoted to the topic so the reader knows that you are aware of the numerous prior studies.

5. What if I find exactly what I want to say in the writing of another researcher? In the social sciences, the rationale in duplicating prior research is generally governed by the passage of time, changing circumstances or conditions, or the emergence of variables that necessitate a new investigation . If someone else has recently conducted a thorough investigation of precisely the same research problem that you intend to study, then you likely will have to revise your topic, or at the very least, review this literature to identify something new to say about the problem. However, if it is someone else's particularly succinct expression, but it fits perfectly with what you are trying to say, then you can quote from the author directly, referencing the source. Identifying an author who has made the exact same point that you want to make can be an opportunity to add legitimacy to, as well as reinforce the significance of, the research problem you are investigating. The key is to build on that idea in new and innovative ways. If you are not sure how to do this, consult with a librarian .

6. Should I cite a source even if it was published long ago? Any source used in writing your paper should be cited, regardless of when it was written. However, in building a case for understanding prior research about your topic, it is generally true that you should focus on citing more recently published studies because they presumably have built upon the research of older studies. When referencing prior studies, use the research problem as your guide when considering what to cite. If a study from forty years ago investigated the same topic, it probably should be examined and considered in your list of references because the research may have been foundational or groundbreaking at the time, even if its findings are no longer relevant to current conditions or reflect current thinking [one way to determine if a study is foundational or groundbreaking is to examine how often it has been cited in recent studies using the "Cited by" feature of Google Scholar ]. However, if an older study only relates to the research problem tangentially or it has not been cited in recent studies, then it may be more appropriate to list it under further readings .

NOTE:   In any academic writing, you are required to identify which ideas, facts, thoughts, concepts, or declarative statements are yours and which are derived from the research of others. The only exception to this rule is information that is considered to be a commonly known fact [e.g., "George Washington was the first president of the United States"] or a statement that is self-evident [e.g., "Australia is a country in the Global South"]. Appreciate, however, that any "commonly known fact" is culturally constructed and shaped by social and aesthetical biases . If you are in doubt about whether or not a fact is considered to be widely understood knowledge, provide a supporting citation, or, ask your professor for clarification about how the statement should be cited.

Citing Sources: When should I use a citation?

A citation should be used when content that did not originate with you is used to support your writing.

Content includes:

  • words (quotations, phrases, sayings, etc.)
  • thoughts or ideas (summarizations and paraphrases)
  • audio or visual material (photos, videos, screencaptures, powerpoint slides, social media content, audio recordings, etc.)

What you don't need to cite

No need to cite what is known as common knowledge.

But, what is common knowledge?  Common knowledge includes information that someone can easily trace and find the answer to.  In an academic context, common knowledge will depend on the audience, but here are some examples to get you started:

  • There are 24 hours in a day.
  • The President of the United States can serve up to two terms in office, each term lasting four years.
  • The phone number for emergency services in the United States is 9-1-1

When in doubt: CITE --  You won’t be judged harshly for adding a citation when it isn’t needed.  However, skipping a citation (whether it’s an accident or not) is considered plagiarism, which can have serious consequences.

Reporting Publications to NIH

Learn how to report publications to NIH in progress reports and funding applications.

Include PMCID in Citations

Anyone submitting an application, proposal or report to the NIH must include the PMC reference number (PMCID) when citing applicable papers that they author or that arise from their NIH-funded research.

Example : Three authors collaborate on a paper that falls under the public access policy. Author A has no NIH support, Author B worked on the paper using salary support from his mentor’s NIH award, and Author C used her NIH award to support the research reported in the paper. If any of the four scientists (the authors and Author B’s mentor) cite the paper when they apply for an NIH award, they must include the PMCID in the citation. However, when another scientist (anyone other than the three authors or Author B’s mentor) cites this paper in their NIH research application, they are not required to include the PMCID. In addition, when Author B’s mentor and Author C next report on the progress of their respective awards to NIH, they must cite the paper and include the PMCID.

  • Papers marked “In process at NIHMS” are only provisionally compliant within 3 months of the official date of publication . My NCBI will change the status to ‘Complete’ when a PMCID is issued. If the paper does not have a PMCID after 3 months, My NCBI will change the paper’s status to ‘non-compliant’ until a PMCID is issued.
  • Papers collected under submission Method A will stay provisionally compliant (‘PMC Journal In Process’) until a PMCID is Issued.
  • Papers collected under submission Method B are only provisionally compliant within 3 months of the official date of publication. If they do not have a PMCID after 3 months, My NCBI will change the paper’s status to ‘non-compliant’ until a PMCID is issued.

The RPPR draws from every paper in the PI’s My Bibliography collection, and any paper linked to the award in the Other Citations collection. You can also generate a PDF report for the publications section of the PHS 2590.

B. Tracking and reporting papers arising from resource sharing

If an NIH award’s only contribution to a publication is a shared resource, awardees should not list the publication in section C.1 of an RPPR or in the progress report publication list of a competitive renewal application.

  • Awardees are not required to track or report publications arising from the resources they share. Instead:
  • Awardees submitting an RPPR can opt to list and/or summarize these publications in section B.2. Section B.2 requests a description of accomplishments and other achievements. Publications listed and/or summarized in this section will not count against the section’s two-page limit.
  • Awardees submitting a renewal application can opt to list and/or summarize these publications in the appropriate sharing plan (Data Sharing Plan, Genomic Data Sharing Plan, Model Organism Sharing Plan Resource Sharing Plan, etc.).

Awardees should only use a list or summary to highlight how shared resources lead to noteworthy impact(s). Neither a list nor summary is required. If awardees provide a list, it does not have to be complete.

Title: ilciter: evidence-grounded interpretable local citation recommendation.

Abstract: Existing Machine Learning approaches for local citation recommendation directly map or translate a query, which is typically a claim or an entity mention, to citation-worthy research papers. Within such a formulation, it is challenging to pinpoint why one should cite a specific research paper for a particular query, leading to limited recommendation interpretability. To alleviate this, we introduce the evidence-grounded local citation recommendation task, where the target latent space comprises evidence spans for recommending specific papers. Using a distantly-supervised evidence retrieval and multi-step re-ranking framework, our proposed system, ILCiteR, recommends papers to cite for a query grounded on similar evidence spans extracted from the existing research literature. Unlike past formulations that simply output recommendations, ILCiteR retrieves ranked lists of evidence span and recommended paper pairs. Secondly, previously proposed neural models for citation recommendation require expensive training on massive labeled data, ideally after every significant update to the pool of candidate papers. In contrast, ILCiteR relies solely on distant supervision from a dynamic evidence database and pre-trained Transformer-based Language Models without any model training. We contribute a novel dataset for the evidence-grounded local citation recommendation task and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed conditional neural rank-ensembling approach for re-ranking evidence spans.

Effects of a Social Media Intervention on Vaping Intentions: Randomized Dose-Response Experiment

Background: e-Cigarette use, especially by young adults, is at unacceptably high levels and represents a public health risk factor. Digital media are increasingly being used to deliver antivaping campaigns, but little is known about their effectiveness or the dose-response effects of content delivery.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to evaluate (1) the effectiveness of a 60-day antivaping social media intervention in changing vaping use intentions and beliefs related to the stimulus content and (2) the dose-response effects of varying levels of exposure to the intervention on vaping outcomes, including anti-industry beliefs, vaping intentions, and other attitudes and beliefs related to vaping.

Methods: Participants were adults aged 18 to 24 years in the United States. They were recruited into the study through Facebook (Meta Platforms) and Instagram (Meta Platforms), completed a baseline survey, and then randomized to 1 of the 5 conditions: 0 (control), 4, 8, 16, and 32 exposures over a 15-day period between each survey wave. Follow-up data were collected 30 and 60 days after randomization. We conducted stratified analyses of the full sample and in subsamples defined by the baseline vaping status (never, former, and current). Stimulus was delivered through Facebook and Instagram in four 15-second social media videos focused on anti-industry beliefs about vaping. The main outcome measures reported in this study were self-reported exposure to social media intervention content, attitudes and beliefs about vaping, and vaping intentions. We estimated a series of multivariate linear regressions in Stata 17 (StataCorp). To capture the dose-response effect, we assigned each study arm a numerical value corresponding to the number of advertisements (exposures) delivered to participants in each arm and used this number as our focal independent variable. In each model, the predictor was the treatment arm to which each participant was assigned.

Results: The baseline sample consisted of 1491 participants, and the final analysis sample consisted of 57.28% (854/1491) of the participants retained at the 60-day follow-up. We compared the retained participants with those lost to follow-up and found no statistically significant differences across demographic variables. We found a significant effect of the social media treatment on vaping intentions (β=−0.138, 95% CI −0.266 to −0.010; P =.04) and anti-industry beliefs (β=−0.122, 95% CI 0.008-0.237; P =.04) targeted by the intervention content among current vapers but not among the full sample or other strata. We found no significant effects of self-reported exposure to the stimulus.

Conclusions: Social media interventions are a promising approach to preventing vaping among young adults. More research is needed on how to optimize the dosage of such interventions and the extent to which long-term exposure may affect vaping use over time.

Introduction

e-Cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among young adults in the United States between 2014 and 2019 [ 1 ]. In 2019, the current use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes was 4.5% and 14% [ 2 ], respectively. Although e-cigarette use among this population has decreased in recent years, use prevalence still remains at concerning levels. Moreover, the most popular e-cigarette brands contain high levels of nicotine, an addictive substance that may harm the developing brain of young adults [ 3 - 6 ]. The use of e-cigarettes has also been associated with worsened lung health and mental well-being [ 7 - 11 ].

Digital media, including social media platforms, have become a part of our daily lives, particularly among young adults. The use of any social media site by adults aged 18 to 29 years has been consistently >80% since 2011, and many people spend several hours a day on these sites (Pew Research Center, 2021) [ 12 ]. Because of its ubiquity and potential for influence, digital media can be a valuable or harmful tool for population-level behavior change. Thus, there is a great need for more research on the relationship between digital media and health behaviors, social norms, and social networks. Although research is being conducted to determine what digital media as an intervention tool would look like, how it works, and how effective it is [ 13 , 14 ], these studies have only scratched the surface [ 15 ].

The importance of digital media interventions is growing in many health behavior subject areas, including nicotine and tobacco use research. Mass media campaigns have been proven to be effective in creating positive changes in smoking-related attitudes, intentions, and behaviors [ 16 ]. More recent research also supports the use of media campaigns to address the aforementioned rapid increase in and continued use of e-cigarettes among youth and young adults [ 17 ]. Digital strategies will be central to future campaigns. A recent systematic review of digital behavior change interventions by Ichimiya et al [ 18 ] identified 298 relevant articles; 19 of those were for nicotine and tobacco interventions.

Digital media intervention research is currently a small, growing, and highly important field, given the shift in nicotine behavior change campaigns from traditional mass media such as television to digital platforms [ 19 ]. These strategies have the potential to change social norms (ie, beliefs among a population about what is widespread behavior and what is socially sanctioned or required) [ 20 ] about behaviors such as vaping. Social norms may be influenced by, for example, e-cigarette companies’ social media platforms [ 21 ], which normalize and effectively promote use among a peer group such as young adults [ 19 ]. At the same time, antivaping social media may create a new social norm that vaping is uncommon and less socially accepted among the peer group. Theoretically, the effect of such social media campaigns may be to promote a social norm such as the avoidance of nicotine and tobacco products [ 20 ].

Specifically, given the relatively small number of studies found in the systematic review of digital tobacco behavior change interventions by Ichimiya et al [ 18 ], there is a need to rigorously test the effects of antivaping social media content on outcomes. Many large-scale campaigns, such as those run by the Food and Drug Administration (eg, Real Cost) and the Truth Initiative (the Truth campaign), are currently using digital content as part of their overall behavior change strategies, but little is known about their mechanisms of change, and the published research does not include randomized trials [ 18 ]. Research is needed to build and test theories of change for such campaigns using randomized experimental methods.

Furthermore, this study builds on recent studies using a social media–based data collection platform for random assignment studies [ 14 ]. The use of social media recruitment, chatbots for survey delivery, and retargeting technology for intervention delivery and follow-up (FU) have been proven feasible and produce short-term effects on content (eg, advertising) exposure. This study aims to test these methods in a randomized controlled dose-response experiment.

In this study, our goal was to determine whether a social media intervention delivered through an experimental design would have a positive effect on young adult vaping outcomes. We aimed to disseminate the intervention on participants’ Facebook and Instagram news feeds in the form of an antivaping campaign consisting of 4 videos, each 15 seconds in length, drawn from previous Truth Initiative content and aimed at young adults aged 18 to 24 years. Participants answered 1 preintervention survey and 2 postintervention surveys on the same platform, Facebook Messenger (FM; Meta Platforms). A chatbot was used to execute the surveys and keep participants engaged over the course of the 60-day study period.

We tested the hypotheses that exposure to antivaping social media content measured through a social media–based survey would reduce vaping use intentions at the 60-day FU (FU2; hypothesis 1) and increase antivaping industry beliefs at the FU2 (hypothesis 2). We also examined 1 research question: would treatment assignment be associated with lower use intentions and higher antivaping beliefs (ie, a dose-response effect)?

Study Design

The study design was a randomized controlled experiment with 4 treatment arms and a no-exposure control arm. Using the Virtual Lab platform, participants were recruited into the study (details under Data Collection and Measures section), delivered a baseline survey, and then randomized to 1 of the 5 conditions. The design was to achieve a specific number of impressions per arm as follows: 0 (control), 4, 8, 16, and 32 over a 15-day period between each survey wave. Impressions are defined as the number of views of a social media post by a study participant [ 22 ].

There were 3 survey waves: baseline, 30-day FU (FU1), and FU2. The aim was to collect sufficient participants within each wave to have sufficient power to detect a treatment effect of the intervention video content exposure on vaping intentions at FU2. The final baseline sample consisted of 1491 participants divided into 5 study conditions: FU1 consisted of 70.28% (1048/1491) of the participants, and FU2 consisted of 57.28% (854/1491) of the participants.

Intervention Content

The intervention content consisted of four 15-second videos drawn from a previous web-based Truth Initiative campaign called Tested on Humans . The main themes of the videos were that vaping companies do not know the health and other impacts of using e-cigarettes and that they are “testing” their products on human beings. This is consistent with an “anti-industry” countermarking approach to nicotine and tobacco campaigns, which has been used successfully in the past [ 23 , 24 ]. The campaign was not publicly active during this study. We chose this content because it was designed for social media distribution, focused on preventing vaping, and was not currently active.

Following baseline, videos were promoted in the live Facebook and Instagram feeds of treatment arm participants in a randomized order and combinations to achieve the targeted impressions for each arm (ie, an average number of impressions per condition). For example, the “low” exposure arm was designed to obtain 4 impressions that would receive a randomly ordered assignment of each video 1 time, the next highest exposure arm (8 impressions) was designed to obtain the videos in random order 2 times, and so on. The actual number of impressions per group varied because of the time of the intervention delivery and was measured at the group level because of the confidentiality restrictions Facebook and Instagram place on publicly available user data (ie, the exact number of impressions by an individual user is not available, only by the study condition). This resulted in the use of a 5-level variable corresponding to the 5 treatment arms of increasing intended impressions (arm 1=0 impressions, arm 2=4 impressions, arm 3=8 impressions, arm 4=16 impressions, and arm 5=32 impressions).

The study was implemented by Virtual Lab, a social media–based data collection and intervention content delivery platform [ 25 ]. Participants were recruited via Facebook and Instagram advertisements. When a potential participant clicked on a study advertisement, they were asked a series of screening questions using a FM chatbot. Eligible participants were US residents aged 18 to 24 years within the stratified subgroups, with 49.97% (911/1823) of them being current vapers. The participants were asked to provide informed consent and participate in the study through an FM survey delivered by the chatbot. After completing the baseline questionnaire, the participants were randomized to the study condition, received any relevant content over time, and were invited to complete the FU questionnaires.

We used the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) checklist when writing our report [ 26 ]. The study design and recruitment procedures are summarized in Figure 1 . Note that the total retained sample at FU was 57.28% (854/1491), but the sample sizes for some analyses varied because of participant response patterns.

Ethical Considerations

This study was reviewed and approved as not greater than minimal risk human participants research by the George Washington University Institutional Review Board (IRB) on August 5, 2020(IRB number NCR202837). Through the FM chatbot, participants read an IRB-approved statement informing them about the purposes and nature of the research. By clicking on a button to proceed with the survey, they provided consent to participate. All data used in this study have been deidentified and stored following the IRB-approved procedure to ensure confidentiality. The participants received a US $10 e-gift card as compensation for each survey completed.

Data Collection and Measures

Similar to a pilot study reported by Tulsiani et al [ 14 ], we worked with Virtual Lab to implement the study and collect data [ 25 ]. The study team created a Facebook business account called “Digital Health Research” to recruit participants and manage data collection and a second account, “Consumer Consciousness,” to run the target advertisements on the enrolled participants’ Facebook and Instagram news feeds. The recruitment advertisements were served to people aged 18 to 24 years who were located in the United States. The advertisements used the text, “Take a 15 minute survey, get paid $10.” After the participants clicked on the study’s advertisement, they were sent a message via FM inviting them to participate in the study.

The survey was delivered as a series of individual chats through FM using a chatbot. The survey consisted of 40 items drawn from the tobacco control and campaign evaluation literature [ 27 ]. For this study, we used a subset of the items contained in the survey, following our study objectives. All items were measured on a 5-point agreement scale, except where noted (strongly agree to strongly disagree).

Our primary end point was future vape intentions, operationalized as the average of responses to 2 items, which were each answered on a 5-point agreement scale: “Thinking about the future, if one of your best friends offered you an e-cigarette/vape (even one or two puffs) in the coming year, would you smoke it?” and “Do you think you will use an e-cigarette/vape (even one or two puffs) in the next year?” Our secondary end point was anti-industry sentiment, measured as the average of responses to 2 items, also on a 5-point agreement scale: “Vape companies make me angry” and “I am willing to stand up with others against vape companies.” Our measures of vaping intentions and anti-industry sentiment are both taken from the second FU survey. Finally, we examined self-reported advertisement exposure. For each of the 4 advertisements, the participants were asked, “Overall, about how many times to do you think you’ve seen this ad? 1-2 times; 3-5 times; more than 5 times.” Responses were recoded to approximate the average value for each category (“Never”=0, “1-2 times”=1.5, “3-5 times”=4, and “>5 times”=6), and an average value across each of these 4 advertisements was calculated to generate an average value of reported advertisement exposure. As we were interested in cumulative exposure, the value for both time points was averaged.

Data Analysis

To investigate our hypotheses, a series of multivariate linear regressions were conducted in Stata 17 (StataCorp). To capture the dose-response effect, rather than treating the 5 study arms as 5 independent and nominal groups, we assigned each arm a numerical value corresponding to the number of advertisements delivered to participants in each arm and used this number as our focal independent variable. In each model, the predictor was the treatment arm to which each participant was assigned. The outcome variables for these regressions were self-reported advertisement exposure, anti-industry attitudes and beliefs, and vape use intentions. For each of the multivariate linear regressions, the following covariates were included: race and ethnicity (dummy coded for “non-Hispanic White,” “non-Hispanic Black,” “Hispanic,” and “non-Hispanic other”—“non-Hispanic White” was used as the reference category), gender (dummy coded for “female,” “male,” and “another identity/nonbinary/transgender”—“female” was used as the reference category), age in years, and baseline use of e-cigarettes (dummy coded for “Never User,” “Former User,” and “Current User”—“Never User” was used as the reference category).

We included 57.28% (854/1491) of the participants retained at FU2 in our analysis. We compared the retained participants with those lost to FU (LTFU) and found no statistically significant differences across demographic variables. These results are presented in Multimedia Appendix 1 .

In addition, different efficacy levels of the treatment were hypothesized for the participants based on their use status at baseline. Therefore, each of the aforementioned model was also applied to subsamples based on e-cigarette use at the final wave of data collection (“Never users,” “Former Users,” and “Current Users”). We note that these subgroup analyses were not among the original hypotheses of the study and were investigated post hoc. All analyses included the full sample, including those LTFU, following the intention-to-treat principles.

Power Analysis

We conducted a statistical power analysis to determine an appropriate sample size. Because of our planned dose-response analysis, we used correlation analysis as the basis for our calculations. Specifically, we assumed that the correlation between advertisements delivered in each study arm and vaping intentions at FU2 would be small, as low as 0.1, and used Stata 18 (StataCorp) to calculate that a sample of 783 participants would be needed to provide 80% power for rejecting the null hypothesis at the conventional Cronbach α=0.05 level. Second, based on the results of some pilot studies, we assumed that up to 45% (671/1491 based on our actual sample) of the baseline participants would be LTFU before FU2. Thus, we concluded that the baseline sample should include a minimum of 1423 participants, or approximately 19.11% (285/1423) of participants in each of the 5 study arms. We exceeded our recruitment target in the final sample.

Table 1 provides the descriptive statistics for the baseline sample categorized by the treatment arm.

We used a chi-square test to examine any potential differences in demographics between the arms and found no statistically significant differences. Overall, the sample is relatively evenly distributed, with ages ranging from 18 to 24 years, and just <47.95% (715/1491) of the sample is non-Hispanic White. Approximately 7.98% (119/1491) and 16.97% (253/1491) of the sample were non-Hispanic Black and of Hispanic ethnicity, respectively. Approximately 69.01% (1029/1491) of the sample was female, and approximately 65% (969/1491) reported having more than enough income to support themselves. Just >70.09% (1045/1491) reported being heterosexual, with the next largest group reporting being bisexual at just <17.91% (267/1491). At baseline, approximately 20.99% (313/1491) reported current e-cigarette use (meaning within the past 30 d), and 22% (328/1491) reported former ( >30 d ago) use.

Table 2 provides a summary of the models for treatment effects with covariates on vape use intentions by final use status (full sample, never, former, and current users).

Overall, there is a significant treatment effect among current vapers on lower vaping intentions (β=−0.138; P =.04) but not in the full sample or other subgroups. We also see effects on lower vaping intentions among Black participants in the full sample and among baseline former and current vapers in the full sample.

Table 3 provides a summary of the models for treatment effects with covariates on anti-industry attitudes and beliefs, which were the main beliefs targeted by the intervention content (ie, beliefs that the e-cigarette industry harms its customers).

Overall, there is a significant treatment effect among current vapers on anti-industry beliefs (β=0.120; P =.046) but not in the full sample or other subgroups. In addition, Black participants were more likely to report an intention to vape than non-Hispanic White participants, and current and former vapers were more likely to report an intention to vape than participants who had never vaped.

Table 4 provides a summary of the models for treatment effects with covariates on self-reported advertisement exposure.

There is no main effect of treatment on the reported advertisement exposure among any of the population groups of interest. In addition, we observe higher self-reported advertisement exposure among Black participants in the full sample, and exposure to intervention content was higher among baseline never vapers and baseline current 30-day vapers. It is possible that the lack of relationship between the treatment group and reported advertisement exposure is because of insufficient elapsed time during the intervention period to achieve the intended number of impressions per group, which resulted in participants in the fourth and fifth groups receiving similar levels of impressions. The average impressions delivered per user per treatment arm were as follows: arm 1=0, arm 2=2.293, arm 3=7.708, arm 4=12.718, and arm 5=14.218.

e-Cigarette use among young adults is a significant public health threat. Use rates dropped early in the COVID-19 pandemic but have seen a resurgence in the later stages of this public health emergency [ 28 ]. Innovative strategies to deliver antivaping messages and reduce use intentions and behavior are needed. Given the high levels of social media use among adolescents and young adults, and especially engagement with provaping content [ 29 ], interventions using social media are an important intervention channel for experimentation and population-level campaigns.

Principal Findings

Overall, this study found significant effects in the direction expected for intentions and anti-industry sentiment. Our hypothesis 1 was partially confirmed: there was a significant treatment effect on both anti-industry beliefs and lower vaping intentions, but these effects were limited to current e-cigarette users and were not observed among never or past users or in the full-sample analyses.

This study partially confirmed hypothesis 2: higher levels of treatment (ie, from arms 1 to 5) were associated with the anti-industry beliefs and vaping intentions outcomes of interest. However, we did not observe a direct or dose-response effect of the intervention on content exposure outcomes (ie, awareness of the specific social media posts used as stimulus in the study). This is typically the most proximal outcome resulting from a campaign, and the absence of these anticipated effects deserves further investigation.

One possible explanation is that the experiment did not completely achieve the intended levels of impressions for each study arm. In particular, the level of impression achieved at the highest exposure arms (4 to 5) was quite similar, whereas the intent was to double the number of impressions in each arm. This may be an artifact of the length of time our intervention was in the field, which was only 60 days. Total social media impressions are typically a function of the length of a campaign, and longer study durations may result in more closely matching the intended exposure levels by study condition [ 30 , 31 ].

The observed effects of treatment on anti-industry beliefs are consistent with the content of the intervention, which focused on messages exposing the misinformation and disinformation that e-cigarette companies use in their marketing and the idea that their products and practices are harmful to consumers. This study provides evidence to support the idea that targeted campaign messages can directly impact attitudes and beliefs focused on the content of those messages. Future studies should examine approaches to optimize these observed effects.

The observed effects on lower vape use intentions suggest that there may be a connection between anti-industry beliefs and future use among current users. If young adults believe that the industry is using misinformation and disinformation and selling a harmful product, they may reconsider their current use [ 32 ]. This suggests a potential mediation effect of anti-industry beliefs on intentions and potentially on e-cigarette use. The hypothetical pathways of effects should be formally evaluated in future studies.

Future Directions

One question raised by this study’s findings for vaping intentions and anti-industry beliefs is why we did not see effects among the former and never vapers. However, it is simply difficult to shift beliefs and intentions in those other groups than among current vapers. Alternatively, messages focused on topics and persuasive content other than anti-industry sentiment may be needed for those groups. In addition, selective attention bias (ie, the personal relevance of vaping-related content) suggests that vapers may be more responsive to the antivaping social media content used in this study [ 33 ]. Future research should examine these questions.

To fully examine the dose-response effects of social media interventions, longer time durations may be needed, and larger small sample sizes per study arm may be needed, especially given the attrition at FU. Cell sizes between the study conditions were reduced at the second FU, which may have reduced the statistical power to below the levels needed to detect some dose-response outcomes of interest. Previous studies have shown the dose-response effects of anti-industry messaging on vaping-related content exposure and attitudinal outcomes [ 14 ].

This study also contributes to the growing literature on public health, social media interventions, and theories of change [ 34 , 35 ]. This study further demonstrates the potential of a social media–based research and intervention delivery platform to build evidence for tobacco control. Future studies should expand on this research with longer-term longitudinal studies capable of potentially detecting treatment effects on vaping use behavior; examine diverse subgroups of interest, including high-risk groups for e-cigarette use; and examine multiple types of social media content. Finally, the demonstrated effects of social media on intentions and other outcomes related to vaping should be considered when formulating a tobacco control policy, including recommendations for effective comprehensive prevention and cessation interventions [ 36 ].

Limitations

Finally, this study has some limitations. First, it was conducted over a relatively short period (60 d), and thus, only intermediate outcomes were evaluated. In addition, the time duration may have limited our ability to fully generate the intended differences in the objective impressions created within each study arm. We observed a substantial LTFU (>40%) at the second FU survey. Future social media studies should make extensive efforts to limit LTFU, especially when following participants over longer periods. Second, our original data analysis plan did not include an explicit plan to stratify by vaping status, and relatedly, the size of our sample was based on power calculations that assumed a whole sample rather than a stratified analysis. The post hoc nature of those stratified analyses should be considered when interpreting the findings of this study. In addition, the Truth Initiative content used for the stimulus had previously aired, and prior exposure may have limited its treatment potential. Finally, although the observed effects of the intervention occurred among current vapers, the study was not powered by subgroups. Finally, we performed multiple comparisons in our analyses, which raises the possibility of false-positive findings. Future studies should use previously unaired content, where possible, and ensure a sufficient sample size among specific subgroups of interest, where feasible (ie, power at the subgroup level).

Conclusions

Social media interventions are a promising approach to preventing vaping among young adults [ 13 ]. More research is needed on how to optimize the dosage of such interventions and the long-term effects on vaping use over time. Social media–based research platforms are a promising methodology to conduct experimental public health research among specific priority populations.
