Why Case Studies in CBSE Syllabus?

CBSE has introduced case study questions in the CBSE curriculum recently. The purpose was to make students ready to face real-life challenges with the knowledge acquired in their classrooms. It means, there was a need to connect theories with practicals. Whatsoever the students are learning, they must know how to apply it in their day-to-day life. That’s why CBSE is emphasizing case studies and competency-based education .

Case Study Questions in Maths

Let’s have a look over the class 12 Mathematics sample question paper issued by CBSE, New Delhi. Question numbers 17 and 18 are case study questions.

Focus on concepts

If you go through each MCQ there, you will find that the theme/case study is common but the questions are based on different concepts related to the theme. It means, that if you have done ample practice on the various concepts, you can solve all these MCQs in minutes.

Now he asked Jose,” If I increase AB by 11 cm and decrease the side BC by 11 cm, then what type of triangle it would be?” Jose said, “It will become an equilateral triangle.”

Again teacher asked Suraj,” If I multiply the side AB by 4 then what will be the relation of this with side AC?” Suraj said it will be 10 cm more than the three times AC.

Case Study Questions Determinants – 01

DETERMINANTS:  A determinant is a square array of numbers (written within a pair of vertical lines) that represents a certain sum of products. We can solve a system of equations using determinants, but it becomes very tedious for large systems. We will only do 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 systems using determinants. Using the properties of determinants solve the problem given below and answer the questions that follow:

Three shopkeepers Ram Lal, Shyam Lal, and Ghansham are using polythene bags, handmade bags (prepared by prisoners), and newspaper envelopes as carrying bags. It is found that the shopkeepers Ram Lal, Shyam Lal, and Ghansham are using (20,30,40), (30,40,20), and (40,20,30) polythene bags, handmade bags, and newspapers envelopes respectively. The shopkeeper’s Ram Lal, Shyam Lal, and Ghansham spent ₹250, ₹270, and ₹200 on these carry bags respectively.

Question Paper Design of CBSE class 12 maths is as below. It clearly shows that 20% weightage will be given to HOTS questions. Whereas 55% of questions will be easy to solve.

Class 12 Maths Syllabus 2022-23

Unit-i: relations and functions.

1. Relations and Functions (15 Periods)

Types of relations: reflexive, symmetric, transitive and equivalence relations. One to one and onto functions.

2. Inverse Trigonometric Functions (15 Periods)

Definition, range, domain, principal value branch. Graphs of inverse trigonometric functions.

Unit-II: Algebra

1. Matrices (25 Periods)

Concept, notation, order, equality, types of matrices, zero and identity matrix, transpose of a matrix, symmetric and skew symmetric matrices. Operation on matrices: Addition and multiplication and multiplication with a scalar. Simple properties of addition, multiplication and scalar multiplication. Oncommutativity of multiplication of matrices and existence of non-zero matrices whose product is the zero matrix (restrict to square matrices of order 2). Invertible matrices and proof of the uniqueness of inverse, if it exists; (Here all matrices will have real entries).

2. Determinants 25 Periods

Determinant of a square matrix (up to 3 x 3 matrices), minors, co-factors and applications of determinants in finding the area of a triangle. Adjoint and inverse of a square matrix. Consistency, inconsistency and number of solutions of system of linear equations by examples, solving system of linear equations in two or three variables (having unique solution) using inverse of a matrix.

Unit-III: Calculus

1. Continuity and Differentiability (20 Periods)

Continuity and differentiability, chain rule, derivative of inverse trigonometric functions, 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 sin −1  𝑥 , cos −1  𝑥 and tan −1  𝑥, derivative of implicit functions. Concept of exponential and logarithmic functions. Derivatives of logarithmic and exponential functions. Logarithmic differentiation, derivative of functions expressed in parametric forms. Second order derivatives.

2. Applications of Derivatives (10 Periods)

Applications of derivatives: rate of change of bodies, increasing/decreasing functions, maxima and minima (first derivative test motivated geometrically and second derivative test given as a provable tool). Simple problems (that illustrate basic principles and understanding of the subject as well as reallife situations).

3. Integrals (20 Periods)

Integration as inverse process of differentiation. Integration of a variety of functions by substitution, by partial fractions and by parts, Evaluation of simple integrals of the following types and problems based on them.

Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (without proof). Basic properties of definite integrals and evaluation of definite integrals.

4. Applications of the Integrals (15 Periods)

Applications in finding the area under simple curves, especially lines, circles/ parabolas/ellipses (in standard form only)

5. Differential Equations (15 Periods)

Definition, order and degree, general and particular solutions of a differential equation. Solution of differential equations by method of separation of variables, solutions of homogeneous differential equations of first order and first degree. Solutions of linear differential equation of the type:

Unit-IV: Vectors and Three-Dimensional Geometry

1. Vectors (15 Periods)

Vectors and scalars, magnitude and direction of a vector. Direction cosines and direction ratios of a vector. Types of vectors (equal, unit, zero, parallel and collinear vectors), position vector of a point, negative of a vector, components of a vector, addition of vectors, multiplication of a vector by a scalar, position vector of a point dividing a line segment in a given ratio. Definition, Geometrical Interpretation, properties and application of scalar (dot) product of vectors, vector (cross) product of vectors.

2. Three – dimensional Geometry (15 Periods)

Direction cosines and direction ratios of a line joining two points. Cartesian equation and vector equation of a line, skew lines, shortest distance between two lines. Angle between two lines.

Unit-V: Linear Programming

1. Linear Programming (20 Periods)

Introduction, related terminology such as constraints, objective function, optimization, graphical method of solution for problems in two variables, feasible and infeasible regions (bounded or unbounded), feasible and infeasible solutions, optimal feasible solutions (up to three non-trivial constraints).

Unit-VI: Probability

1. Probability 30 (Periods)

Conditional probability, multiplication theorem on probability, independent events, total probability, Bayes’ theorem, Random variable and its probability distribution, mean of random variable.

A relation R on a set A is said to be an equivalence relation on A iff

  • it is reflexive
  • it is symmetric
  • it is transitive

Class 12 Maths Chapter 1 Relations and Functions

Let f be a function from A to B. If every element of the set B is the image of at least one element of the set A i.e. if there is no unpaired element in the set B then we say that the function f maps the set A onto the set B. Otherwise we say that the function maps the set A into the set B. Functions for which each element of the set A is mapped to a different element of the set B are said to be one-to-one.

A function can map more than one element of the set A to the same element of the set B. Such a type of function is said to be many-to-one. A function which is both one-to-one and onto is said to be a bijective function.

Important Questions on 12th Maths Chapter 1

Determine whether each of the following relation are reflexive, symmetric and transitive: relation r in the set a = {1, 2, 3… 13, 14} defined as r = {(x, y): 3x – y = 0}.

A = {1, 2, 3 … 13, 14} R = {(x, y): 3x − y = 0} ∴ R = {(1, 3), (2, 6), (3, 9), (4, 12)} R is not reflexive since (1, 1), (2, 2) … (14, 14) ∉ R. Also, R is not symmetric as (1, 3) ∈ R, but (3, 1) ∉ R. [3(3) − 1 ≠ 0] Also, R is not transitive as (1, 3), (3, 9) ∈ R, but (1, 9) ∉ R. [3(1) − 9 ≠ 0] Hence, R is neither reflexive, nor symmetric, nor transitive.

Show that the relation R in the set R of real numbers, defined as R = {(a, b): a ≤ b²} is neither reflexive nor symmetric nor transitive.

R = {(a, b): a ≤ b²} It can be observed that (1/2,1/2)∉R, since, 1/2>(1/2)² ∴ R is not reflexive. Now, (1, 4) ∈ R as 1 (1.5)² = 2.25 ∴ (3, 1.5) ∉ R ∴ R is not transitive. Hence, R is neither reflexive, nor symmetric, nor transitive.

Check whether the relation R defined in the set {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} as R = {(a, b): b = a + 1} is reflexive, symmetric or transitive.

Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}. A relation R is defined on set A as: R = {(a, b): b = a + 1} ∴ R = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 4), (4, 5), (5, 6)} We can find (a, a) ∉ R, where a ∈ A. For instance, (1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3), (4, 4), (5, 5), (6, 6) ∉ R ∴ R is not reflexive. It can be observed that (1, 2) ∈ R, but (2, 1) ∉ R. ∴ R is not symmetric. Now, (1, 2), (2, 3) ∈ R but, (1, 3) ∉ R ∴ R is not transitive. Hence, R is neither reflexive, nor symmetric, nor transitive.

Show that the relation R in the set {1, 2, 3} given by R = {(1, 2), (2, 1)} is symmetric but neither reflexive nor transitive.

Let A = {1, 2, 3}. A relation R on A is defined as R = {(1, 2), (2, 1)}. It is clear that (1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3) ∉ R, ∴ R is not reflexive. Now, as (1, 2) ∈ R and (2, 1) ∈ R, then R is symmetric. Now, (1, 2) and (2, 1) ∈ R, however, (1, 1) ∉ R, ∴ R is not transitive. Hence, R is symmetric but neither reflexive nor transitive.

Show that the relation R in the set A of all the books in a library of a college, given by R = {(x, y): x and y have same number of pages} is an equivalence relation.

Set A is the set of all books in the library of a college. R = {x, y): x and y have the same number of pages} Now, R is reflexive since (x, x) ∈ R as x and x has the same number of pages. Let (x, y) ∈ R ⇒ x and y have the same number of pages. ⇒ y and x have the same number of pages. ⇒ (y, x) ∈ R ∴ R is symmetric. Now, let (x, y) ∈R and (y, z) ∈ R. ⇒ x and y and have the same number of pages and y and z have the same number of pages. ⇒ x and z have the same number of pages. ⇒ (x, z) ∈ R ∴ R is transitive. Hence, R is an equivalence relation.

Show that the relation R in the set A of points in a plane given by R = {(P, Q): Distance of the point P from the origin is same as the distance of the point Q from the origin}, is an equivalence relation. Further, show that the set of all point related to a point P ≠ (0, 0) is the circle passing through P with origin as centre.

R = {(P, Q): Distance of point P from the origin is the same as the distance of point Q from the origin} Clearly, (P, P) ∈ R since the distance of point P from the origin is always the same as the distance of the same point P from the origin. ∴ R is reflexive. Now, Let (P, Q) ∈ R. ⇒ The distance of point P from the origin is the same as the distance of point Q from the origin. ⇒ The distance of point Q from the origin is the same as the distance of point P from the origin. ⇒ (Q, P) ∈ R, ∴ R is symmetric. Now, Let (P, Q), (Q, S) ∈ R. ⇒ The distance of points P and Q from the origin is the same and also, the distance of points Q and S from the origin is the same. ⇒ The distance of points P and S from the origin is the same. ⇒ (P, S) ∈ R ∴ R is transitive. Therefore, R is an equivalence relation. The set of all points related to P ≠ (0, 0) will be those points whose distance from the origin is the same as the distance of point P from the origin. In other words, if O (0, 0) is the origin and OP = k, then the set of all points related to P is at a distance of k from the origin. Hence, this set of points forms a circle with the centre as the origin and this circle passes through point P.

Show that the relation R defined in the set A of all polygons as R = {(P1, P2): P1 and P2 have same number of sides}, is an equivalence relation. What is the set of all elements in A related to the right angle triangle T with sides 3, 4 and 5?

R = {(P1, P2): P1 and P2 have same the number of sides} R is reflexive, Since (P1, P1) ∈ R, as the same polygon has the same number of sides with itself. Let (P1, P2) ∈ R. ⇒ P1 and P2 have the same number of sides. ⇒ P2 and P1 have the same number of sides. ⇒ (P2, P1) ∈ R, ∴ R is symmetric. Now, Let (P1, P2), (P2, P3) ∈ R. ⇒ P1 and P2 have the same number of sides. Also, P2 and P3 have the same number of sides. ⇒ P1 and P3 have the same number of sides. ⇒ (P1, P3) ∈ R ∴ R is transitive. Hence, R is an equivalence relation. The elements in A related to the right-angled triangle (T) with sides 3, 4, and 5 are those polygons which have 3 sides (Since T is a polygon with 3 sides). Hence, the set of all elements in A related to triangle T is the set of all triangles.

Let L be the set of all lines in XY plane and R be the relation in L defined as R = {(L1, L2): L1 is parallel to L2}. Show that R is an equivalence relation. Find the set of all lines related to the line y = 2x + 4.

R = {(L1, L2): L1 is parallel to L2} R is reflexive as any line L1 is parallel to itself i.e., (L1, L1) ∈ R. Now, let (L1, L2) ∈ R. ⇒ L1 is parallel to L2 ⇒ L2 is parallel to L1. ⇒ (L2, L1) ∈ R ∴ R is symmetric. Now, let (L1, L2), (L2, L3) ∈ R. ⇒ L1 is parallel to L2. Also, L2 is parallel to L3. ⇒ L1 is parallel to L3. ∴ R is transitive. Hence, R is an equivalence relation. The set of all lines related to the line y = 2x + 4 is the set of all lines that are parallel to the line y = 2x + 4. Slope of line y = 2x + 4 is m = 2 It is known that parallel lines have the same slopes. The line parallel to the given line is of the form y = 2x + c, where c ∈ R. Hence, the set of all lines related to the given line is given by y = 2x + c, where c ∈ R.

Let f: {1, 3, 4} → {1, 2, 5} and g: {1, 2, 5} → {1, 3} be given by f = {(1, 2), (3, 5), (4, 1)} and g = {(1, 3), (2, 3), (5, 1)}. Write down gof.

The functions f: {1, 3, 4} → {1, 2, 5} and g: {1, 2, 5} → {1, 3} are defined as f = {(1, 2), (3, 5), (4, 1)} and g = {(1, 3), (2, 3), (5, 1)}. gof(1) = g[f(1)] = g(2) = 3 [as f(1) = 2 and g(2) = 3] gof(3) = g[f(3)] = g(5) = 1 [as f(3) = 5 and g(5) = 1] gof(4) = g[f(4)] = g(1) = 3 [as f(4) = 1 and g(1) = 3] ∴ gof = {(1, 3), (3, 1), (4, 3)}

Show that the function f: R → R given by f(x) = x³ is injective.

f: R → R is given as f(x) = x³. For one – one Suppose f(x) = f(y), where x, y ∈ R. ⇒ x³ = y³ … (1) Now, we need to show that x = y. Suppose x ≠ y, their cubes will also not be equal. ⇒ x³ ≠ y³ However, this will be a contradiction to (1). ∴ x = y Hence, f is injective.

The core motive of chapter 1 (Relations and Functions) of 12th standard Maths is to teach students the following things:

  • Empty relation is the relation R in X given by R = φ ⊂ X × X.
  • Universal relation is the relation R in X given by R = X × X.
  • Reflexive relation R in X is a relation with (a, a) ∈ R ∀ a ∈ X.
  • Symmetric relation R in X is a relation satisfying (a, b) ∈ R implies (b, a) ∈ R.

  • A function f: X → Y is invertible if and only if f is one-one and onto.
  • Given a finite set X, a function f: X → X is one-one (respectively onto) if and only if f is onto (respectively one-one). This is the characteristic property of a finite set. This is not true for infinite set.
  • A binary operation ∗ on a set A is a function ∗ from A × A to A.
  • An element e ∈ X is the identity element for binary operation ∗: X × X → X, if a ∗ e = a = e ∗ a ∀ a ∈ X.
  • An element a ∈ X is invertible for binary operation ∗: X × X → X, if there exists b ∈ X such that a ∗ b = e = b ∗ a where, e is the identity for the binary operation ∗. The element b is called inverse of a and is denoted by a^(–1).
  • An operation ∗ on X is commutative if a ∗ b = b ∗ a ∀ a, b in X.
  • An operation ∗ on X is associative if (a ∗ b) ∗ c = a ∗ (b ∗ c) ∀ a, b, c in X.

What is the Relation?

Let us consider two sets A and B. Then a relation R from Set A into Set B is defined as the subset of A × B. The relation can be classified into three different types, such as:

  • Reflexive Relation
  • Symmetric Relation
  • Transitive Relation

What is a Function?

A function is defined as the relation between two sets, in which every element in set 1 is associated with the elements in set 2. In other words, if  “f” is a function from A to B, then every element in set B is the image of an element in set A.  The different types of functions are:

  • One to One function
  • One to Many functions
  • Onto function
  • One to one Correspondence

Class 12 Chapter 1 – Relations and Functions Important Questions with Solutions

Go through the solved problems given below. Here, all the important questions for class 12 chapter 1 maths problems are given. The problems given here are frequently asked in the previous board examinations. Practice these problems well and solve the practice problems provided here.

Q.1:   Show that the Signum Function f: R → R, given by

Check for one to one function:

For example:

Since, the different elements say f(1), f(2) and f(3), shows the same image, then the function is not one to one function.

Check for Onto Function:

For the function,f: R →R

In this case, the value of f(x) is defined only if x is 1, 0, -1

For any other real numbers(for example y = 2, y = 100) there is no corresponding element x.

Thus, the function “f” is not onto function.

Hence, the given function “f” is neither one-one nor onto.

Q.2:  If f: R → R is defined by f(x) = x 2 − 3x + 2, find f(f(x)).

Given function:

f(x) = x 2 − 3x + 2.

To find f(f(x))

f(f(x)) = f(x) 2 − 3f(x) + 2.

= (x 2 – 3x + 2) 2 – 3(x 2 – 3x + 2) + 2

By using the formula (a-b+c) 2 = a 2 + b 2 + c 2 -2ab +2ac-2ab, we get

= (x 2 ) 2 + (3x) 2 + 2 2 – 2x 2 (3x) + 2x 2 (2) – 2x 2 (3x) – 3(x 2  – 3x + 2) + 2

Now, substitute the values

= x 4 + 9x 2 + 4 – 6x 3 – 12x + 4x 2 – 3x 2 + 9x – 6 + 2

= x 4 – 6x 3 + 9x 2 + 4x 2 – 3x 2 – 12x + 9x – 6 + 2 + 4

Simplify the expression, we get,

f(f(x)) = x 4 – 6x 3 + 10x 2 – 3x

Q.3:  Let A = N × N and * be the binary operation on A defined by (a, b) * (c, d) = (a + c, b + d). Show that * is commutative and associative. Find the identity element for * on A, if any.

Check the binary operation * is commutative :

We know that, * is commutative if (a, b) * (c, d) = (c, d) * (a, b) ∀ a, b, c, d ∈ R

L.H.S =(a, b) * (c, d)

=(a + c, b + d)

R. H. S = (c, d) * (a, b)

Hence, L.H.S = R. H. S

Since (a, b) * (c, d) = (c, d) * (a, b) ∀ a, b, c, d ∈ R

* is commutative (a, b) * (c, d) = (a + c, b + d)

Check the binary operation * is associative :

We know that * is associative if (a, b) * ( (c, d) * (x, y) ) = ((a, b) * (c, d)) * (x, y) ∀ a, b, c, d, x, y ∈ R

L.H.S =  (a, b) * ( (c, d) * (x, y) ) =  (a+c+x, b+d+y)

R.H.S =  ((a, b) * (c, d)) * (x, y) = (a+c+x, b+d+y)

Thus, L.H.S = R.H.S

Since (a, b) * ( (c, d) * (x, y) ) = ((a, b) * (c, d)) * (x, y) ∀ a, b, c, d, x, y ∈ R

Thus, the binary operation * is associative

Checking for Identity Element:

e is identity of * if (a, b) * e = e * (a, b) = (a, b)

where e = (x, y)

Thus, (a, b) * (x, y) = (x, y) * (a, b) = (a, b) (a + x, b + y)

= (x + a , b + y) = (a, b)

Now, (a + x, b + y) = (a, b)

Now comparing these, we get:

x = a -a = 0

Next compare: b +y = b

y = b-b = 0

Since A = N x N, where x and y are the natural numbers. But in this case, x and y is not natural number. Thus, the identity element does not exist.

Therefore, operation * does not have any identity element.

Q.4:  Let f : N → Y be a function defined as f (x) = 4x + 3, where, Y = {y ∈ N: y = 4x + 3 for some x ∈ N}. Show that f is invertible. Find the inverse.

Checking for Inverse:

f(x) = 4x + 3

Let f(x) = y

x = (𝑦 − 3)/4

Let g(y) = (𝑦 − 3)/4

where g: Y → N

Now find gof:

gof = g(f(x))

= g(4x + 3) = [(4𝑥 + 3) − 3]/4

= [4𝑥 + 3 − 3]/4

Now find fog:

fog= f(g(y))

=4[(𝑦 − 3)/4] +3

= y – 3 + 3

Thus, gof = I N and fog = I y ,

Hence, f is invertible

Also, the Inverse of f = g(y) = [𝒚 – 3]/ 4

Q. 5:  Let A = R {3} and B = R – {1}. Consider the function f: A →B defined by f (x) = (x- 2)/(x -3). Is f one-one and onto? Justify your answer.

Checking for one-one function:

f (x 1 ) = (x 1 – 2)/ (x 1 – 3)

f (x 2 ) = (x 2 -2)/ (x 2 -3)

Putting f (x 1 ) = f (x 2 )

(x 1 -2)/(x 1 -3)= (x 2 -2 )/(x 2 -3)

(x 1 -2) (x 2 – 3) = (x 1 – 3) (x 2 -2)

x 1 (x 2 – 3)- 2 (x 2 -3) = x 1 (x 2 – 2) – 3 (x 2 – 2)

x 1 x 2 -3x 1 -2x 2 + 6 = x 1 x 2 – 2x 1 -3x 2 + 6

-3x 1 – 2x 2 =- 2x 1 -3x 2

3x 2 -2x 2 = – 2x 1 + 3x 1

Hence, if f (x 1 ) = f (x 2 ), then x 1 = x 2

Thus, the function f is one-one  function.

Checking for onto function:

f (x) = (x-2)/(x-3)

Let f(x) = y such that y B i.e. y ∈ R – {1}

So, y = (x -2)/(x- 3) y(x -3) = x- 2

xy -3y = x -2

xy – x = 3y-2

x (y -1) = 3y- 2

x = (3y -2) /(y-1)

For y = 1, x is not defined But it is given that. y ∈ R – {1}

Hence, x = (3y- 2)/(y- 1) ∈ R -{3} Hence, f is onto.

Practice Problems for Class 12 Maths Chapter 1

  • Show that the function f: R → R is given by f(x) = x 3 is injective.

Show that the relation R in the set {1, 2, 3} given by R = {(1, 2), (2, 1)} is symmetric but neither reflexive nor transitive.

Let f: {1, 3, 4} → {1, 2, 5} and g: {1, 2, 5} → {1, 3} be given by f = {(1, 2), (3, 5), (4, 1)} and g = {(1, 3), (2, 3), (5, 1)}. Write down gof.
