Pop It Up Here's how some thoughtfulness and innovation turned the humble popcorn into a hot product that gave impetus to what is now a thriving industry poised to touch $15 billion mark by 2023 globally

By Sanchita Dash • Dec 16, 2018

You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.

O f late cinema-goers could only catch a whiff of the smell of fresh popcorn popping out of the popcorn-maker at multiplexes and single screen-theatres. Indeed, without the 'good old' bucket of popcorn, the experience of immersing oneself in the cinematic world up on the screen remains incomplete. But that's passé.

Popcorn now has become one of the most popular snacks, no longer a complementary companion to be munched whilst watching movies, sports or your favourite show. It is thus, one can find this humble snack everywhere around — from Indian kiraanawaalas, fancy stores in malls to various online platforms. And it's not about sweet and salty anymore, popcorn comes in different types of flavors. A testimony to the growing popularity of popcorn is the emergence of a slew of popcorn businesses. What more? The snack even found a place in Oprah's famous list of favourite things she releases every year.

Globally, brands like Garrett's popcorn have actually inspired many Indian popcorn brands. Other brands like Doc Popcorn, Popcorn Shed have also made it big with multiple franchises spread across America. A lot of credit for the rise of popcorn business in India can be attributed to Garrett's, which changed the image of popcorn from a snack meant for binge-watching movies to a great gift you can give your loved ones. With holiday specials and Christmas tins flashing the festive spirit, their packaging itself declares it. The same concept for packaging has flowed into the Indian market as well, where colourful and quirky tins reign supreme.

According to a report done by Allied Market Research, the global popcorn market is projected to reach $15billion by 2023, registering a CAGR of 7.6 percent from 2017 to 2023, with ready-to-eat leading the segment. While established FMCG businesses have either launched a popcorn product or are looking to launch one, startups too have built ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook popcorn brands in the domain. It would be futile to undermine the potential this industry has.

THE GOURMET SAGA: SWEET AND SALTY NO MORE

So, what's got everyone interested in the popcorn industry? There's one answer – Gourmet popcorn, which evolved to be the "it" snack, one that also finds a place in the elite group of the snacking business. One of the first businesses to set the love for gourmet popcorn rolling in India was 4700BC Popcorn — co-founded by Chirag Gupta and Ankur Gupta , who studied to be engineers but ended up being entrepreneurs. The duo after travelling abroad, did market analysis of products that did well globally. They found it surprising gourmet popcorn topped that list and even more surprising that it had no presence in India! So, they brought gourmet popcorn to India, but it wasn't an easy task. They had to import the machines from the US and set up a small "mini-kitchen" in Delhi. It took them one and a half years to perfect the product and launch their first store.

Today, 4700BC Popcorn has presence across India with 22 stores. The business has evolved and grown, the brand has introduced multiple new flavors. They have a production facility of 25,000 sq ft in Sonepat, Haryana, where they produce 35-40 tons of popcorn in a month.

Both founders come from different backgrounds – the former comes with an experience of handling traditional business while the latter has experience in consulting business. "That became the perfect balance — I manage the front-end while Ankur who has experience of doing traditional businesses of managing the Indian labour brought in the on-ground expertise," says Chirag, while adding, "The initial reaction was great. We hit the savoury and sweet category evenly. The trick was that we kept everything, which would be closer to Indian tastebuds yet sounding very international. So, we made the product sound exciting and premium yet best suited for the Indian taste palette."

Diksha M Rai, co-founder of The Crunch Box , is another entrepreneur who was lured by the love of popcorn to start a business of her own. She took a sabbatical from her job at American Express and tried her hands at running a travel agency. She travelled a lot and discovered her love for caramel and gourmet popcorn. Then she decided to get into the business, her co-founder Priyankar was the perfect fit for he came from the movie distribution business.

Rai says that popcorn sales are much higher now than other snacks in the industry as it is a versatile product and comes in many flavors. The Crunch Box has partnered with Indigo Airlines, at the cinemas with Cinepolis, in hospitals with Fortis, at Coffee shops with Barista, and is on the in-house menus of many premium hotels like Hyatt, Taj, Lalit, Marriott,Cidade-de-Goa etc. "This huge volume of work within six months of our launch in December 2014 meant we had to increase our production capacity to almost three times to cater to airlines, cafes and hotel businesses," says Rai.

Gourmet is also what got everyone hooked to the snack even on the eastern side of the country. Childhood sweethearts Rahul Pandey and Sonal Bhotika started Batcaves Popcorn when they were just 24 as they wanted to introduce something new to the city of Kolkata. To keep up with the trendy snack of today's age, they started their business and today, they are supplying to theatres in the North East too. "We have an edge in the eastern market as we were one of the first brands to launch gourmet popcorn," says Bhotika.

Even family businesses like Modi Naturals , which has had a good run in the gourmet business is experimenting with popcorn, albeit with a ready-to-cook product. Traditionally, a B2B company and once one of the largest processors of rice bran oil in the country, it began a B2C vertical by launching Oleev, with which they took olive oil from the gourmet olive oil shelf to the everyday use shelf. Now, they aim to do the same with popcorn. Starting-off with a ready-to-cook brand called Pipo. Talking about the product, executive director, Modi Naturals, Akshay Modi says, "Of course, ready-tocook and eat are different products. Ready-to-eat is more convenient snacking. Ready-to-cook has a great potential to grow. You have the likes of the instant noodles of the world – which have almost become staple food at some places. Now, ready-to-cook popcorn can replace the instant noodles of the world, as it's a healthier snack too."

They piloted with Pipo a few months ago and their sample research showed that parents let kids have popcorn as a snack more often than they are allowed to eat other ready-to-cook products.

THE HEALTHY WAY

The snack's ability to be guilt-free because of its health appeal has brought it a lot of fans. And it is this health quotient that brands are latching on to. Rai explains that the snack industry has seen a massive growth and upshift in its consumption patterns. "There are many types of snack categories for shoppers to choose from. There is an overall demand for ready-to-eat and on-the-go foods. However, popcorn being a totally natural product is a much healthier option than most things available. It is whole grain, gluten free, full of fiber and packed with antioxidants," she says.

When Prashanth Gowriraju of Timla Foods started Popicorn , he knew that it was this health potential that will lead the popularity of popcorn. Gowriraju explained that eating popcorn is one of the healthiest snack habits as it fills you with fiber, and has more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. "It's the perfect dieting snack. High-fiber foods take more time to digest than non-fibrous foods, so they keep you fuller longer. Snacking on air-popped popcorn in between meals canhelp you crave less for sweets and fatty foods. Just don't load up on butter and salt," he says.

Today, Popicorn is producing more than 200 tons of popcorn every month and selling all across India in over 10 different cities, with presence in major retail stores like Hypercity, Metro, Trent, D'Mart, Reliance, Heritage, Future Retail, Food World, ABRL, Future Retail etc.

INVESTMENT COOKING

The popularity of popcorn as a snack is growing across the country and can be seen as more and more retail stores are increasing the number of ready-to-eat popcorn packets kept in their shelves. Gowriraju says, "There is a massive untapped opportunity to gain market share in the nutritious, portable and easy-to-eat meal alternative market that snack manufacturers could fill."

Investments too have been pouring into the sector. 4700BC Popcorn made news when the massive movie theatre chain PVR decided to pick up a 70 percent stake in the business. Meanwhile, Popicorn is backed by Kae-capital and recently raised $2 million in debt financing.

So, what's got the investors interested in the business? For 4700 BC Popcorn, the investment from PVR seemed like a natural step where the startup was looking at expanding its base and PVR was obviously interested because popcorn and cinema go hand-in-hand. "There's no better favourable snacking product than popcorn and it's rated higher than chips too. The investors know that the consumption pattern is really good, but what they really want to see is the execution of the product. There are a lot of great products out there, but execution is what matters," says Chirag.

Asked why Popicorn interested his firm, Navin Honagudi from Kae Capital says, "Our investment thesis was twofold. Firstly, popcorn category requires least customer education since they are aware of the product and secondly, this was a large whitespace in the market as no one offered popcorn at convenient distribution points and affordable prices."

Honagudi believes that there is a large potential for the popcorn business in India given this could be a strong alternative to the existing chips and snacking market. He adds that the market is still nascent in India while globally there are several unicorns in the space.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KERNEL

The business, however, is not bereft of challenges. Keeping up with the consistency of the popcorn is one big challenge that the industry faces. Popcorn has great health benefits but it would only sell if it has the right crunch and texture. When you are building a brand, packaging becomes an important task. From funky and quirky names to colourful packaging boxes, being in the popcorn industry means serious business with a fun twist.

"We really had to work hard and think out of the box to design a liner carton. Any liner carton is generally associated with very expensive and premium products because of its cost factor and designing," says Rai.

Another challenge in the industry is to find the right price point. Modi explained that as the import duty has gone up and good quality kernel is imported from South America, it is a task to keep the pricing at a minimal range. The trick now lies in introducing more occasions for popcorn. A box of popcorn in a festive hamper is an idea that's selling like hotcakes now. Pandey says that popcorn as a gifting idea was not popular two years ago but it is all the rage now. The duo take in corporate orders that are going up in numbers and say that it's only set to increase. "We are creating a parallel between popcorn as a snacking essential and popcorn as a gifting product," says Pandey.

The Crunch Box also has tie-ups for events and gifting with Corporates like Japan Airlines, Make my Trip, Spice Jet, WeWork, ICICI Bank etc.

The popcorn industry in India is on the road for fast-paced growth, moving across barriers. Withmost businesses looking at expansion in the country, it's not long before popcorn becomes the new 'chips' of the snack industry.

How to Start a Popcorn Business in 9 Steps: Popcorn Business Plan

In this guide, you’ll learn how to start a popcorn business, what you need to know before selling popcorn online, and how much it cost to open up a small popcorn business. We’ll also explore how to write the best popcorn business plan.

Let’s get started.

How Much Does it Cost to Start a Popcorn Business?

Typically, starting your popcorn business online costs a lot less than having a brick and mortar store or a popcorn cart. Here are some estimated figures:

For an online popcorn business - $4000 - $8000

For a popcorn cart business - $6000 - $12,000

For a brick and mortar popcorn shop - $30,000 - $50,000

How Much Can You Make From Selling Popcorn?

A bag of pre-made popcorn typically costs around $5. Costs for larger bags range from $7 to $12. We'll use a $6 average pricing for these estimates. After costs for materials and packaging, your profit margin should be substantial—roughly 70%.

You'll see how to calculate your profit margin in a bit.

Working from home and selling 200 bags a week in your first year or two may earn you $62,000 a year. If the 70% margin is accurate, this would result in a profit of around $44,000. Sales could increase to 1,000 bags per week as your brand becomes more well-known and you step up your marketing initiatives.

At some point in your growth phase, you would need to lease a commercial space with additional equipment and recruit people, bringing your profit margin down to about 30%. With $312,000 in annual revenue, you'd still turn a healthy $93,600 profit.

How to Calculate Popcorn Profit Margin

So, how do you calculate your popcorn profit margin?

Popcorn Profit Margin =

Price per bag of popcorn sold (USD$) X Number of bags sold - Cost of kernels (USD$)

How to Start a Popcorn Business in 2022: Everything You Need to Know

Neilsberg Research Avatar

That said, starting a food business is no easy feat. Just like when starting any business, you need to make sure that you are legally compliant with all set regulations. But on top of these, popcorn being part of the food category, needs an extra set of regulations to comply with.

The good news is that there is an upward trend of popcorn snacks. As per the statistics more than 230 million Americans consume popcorn products annually. And this number is increasing every year. With such huge consumption, there surely is a business opportunity that you can benefit from.

To get your popcorn business pop, lets first answer the following questions first:

  • First of all do you see a big gap in the popcorn market?
  • Do you believe that you can fill that gap with your skills?
  • What kind of popcorn do you want to sell, gourmet, kettle, vegan, microwaveable, flavored?
  • Do you want to start a popcorn making business, selling business or both?
  • Do you want to sell raw corn or finished popcorn products?
  • Do you have skills to partner with local movie theaters and sports arenas?

Once you have answered the above questions, you will have a better idea about the type of popcorn business you should start.

In this guide, we’ll help you navigate through the steps to formally set up your popcorn business. Read on to learn everything you need to know.

How to Start a Popcorn Business in 6 Steps

  • Decide your business model
  • Draft a popcorn business plan
  • Get your business registered
  • Invest in product & popcorn equipments
  • The financials - support your popcorn business growth

Step 1: Decide Your Business Model

If you are wondering how to start a popcorn business, we can assume that you have a popcorn business idea in mind that you are interested in starting. That's great! While having an interest is the first logical step, you also need to be critical and assess your skills and assets before getting started formally.

Passion is one thing that every entrepreneur needs to have, but it alone isn’t everything. You need to have a business plan and skills plus resources to achieve your goals. We agree that being a first time entrepreneur, you may not know everything off the bat. But you should be actively looking for help whenever you need it. Given that you are reading this article, we can safely say that you are on the right track as you understand and are researching how to start your own popcorn business.

As a first step you will need to decide on the business model for your popcorn business.

Your own popcorn brand

If you have the skills and the knowledge of starting your own popcorn company, this option is an amazing option for you. Basically what you will get out of this is your own popcorn brand just like Orville Redenbacher, ACT II and Pop Secret.

The popcorn products will be sold under your own brand name and will be available locally, nationally or globally. By choosing this option, you will implicitly choose to start from scratch and make popcorn products by sourcing corn, oils, spices, flavoring agents, equipment, packaging, etc.

The entire product cycle will be in your hands. You will have to make and distribute the popcorn products on your own.

Your own popcorn store

In this business model, you can aim to open a set of popcorn stores / kiosks, when you will be selling hot popcorn to the consumers. Mostly these stores are available in malls and movie theaters.

In this business model, you will need to be skilled at making popcorn. Other things will be mostly taken care of by someone else. For example, if you open a kiosk in a mall, you need to invest in corn, popcorn popper machines and containers. The mall in itself will have foot traffic that you can convert by leveraging your salesmanship. It will be illogical to think that someone would drive all the way to a mall to eat popcorn.

Thus, if you would like to go with this option, you will need to find places where you can expect a lot of consumers who are passing by.

Wholesaling other brand popcorn products

If you have an expertise in business to business sales & marketing, this option is an amazing business opportunity. Although it may not be a standalone business, you can start with it and add product range gradually.

In this option you can become a popcorn wholesaler and source popcorn products from all around the world. The retailers can then source the products from you and you can make a decent profit.

Contract manufacturing

Another business model that you can look at is contract manufacturing. You can set up your own manufacturing units and the big popcorn brands can outsource manufacturing to you. This way, all of the branding, recipes, marketing and product ingredients will be taken care of by the brand and all that you will need to focus on will be manufacturing.

Once you have identified your option, you will have a much better idea of how you want to set up your popcorn business.

Step 2: Draft a Popcorn Business Plan

You may wonder why you need a business plan for your popcorn business, but just like any other thing in life, planning can never hurt. In fact a popcorn business plan will secure the success of your business. You just need to make sure that you set a business plan and work hard to execute it well.

Your business plan may not be a complex plan with every tiny bit of detail as you would need for a complex business idea. You can start small, have a draft business plan with basic outlines and then make changes as you scale your business.

Important things to consider in your business plan include:

Creating a business budget

A business budget will help you outline the financial requirements for your popcorn business. This is a must have before the launch of your business. You do not want to be in a situation of having started the business and then to pause it because of lack of funds.

You need to understand what your costs will be and how you will make money? How long can you run your operations without having to look for more funding? Will your business generate enough profits to fund itself?

A few examples of the costs that you will incur and consider while starting a popcorn business include:

  • Initial investment in raw ingredients
  • Staff salaries

Competition check

It is a no brainer that you are not the only one who can pop a corn. Thus having a competition is expected and actually a good sign. Many strategists say that if you are starting a business where there is no competition, you need to be extra careful. Because there actually is something that you can’t see but others do.

That said, a competition check will help you in many ways. Some of the questions that you should consider:

  • Who else do your customers buy from?
  • What is it that you need to do to attract customers your way?
  • What is their pricing strategy?
  • Do they have a skill that you can learn from?
  • Do they lack something that you can easily take care of?
  • How do they acquire customers?
  • How do they talk to customers on social media?
  • What variety sells the most?

With this information, you will have a much better idea of who else is out there and what they’re doing. It will also help you in identifying a saturated market in the beginning stages itself.

Step 3: Get Your Business Registered

Once you have studied the market, have a business plan and are confident that there is a business opportunity that you can take advantage of, the next step is to get your popcorn business formally registered and known to the appropriate authorities.

Here are a few things you need to know:

Choose a business entity

For your popcorn business, you will need to choose an entity structure before launching your business. This step affects tax, registration, licensing, funding and pretty much everything that you want to put in an important to-do list.

It will depend on the business model you choose. For example, entity structure for a mall kiosk business model will be entirely different from the contract manufacturing model. If you are not registered correctly, a big brand may not want to partner with you.

You need to plan ahead and choose from the following options:

  • A sole proprietorship
  • Limited liability company (LLC)
  • General partnership
  • Corporation

Generally, in the beginning a sole proprietorship is an obvious choice and a popular legal entity structure. It is the simplest and easiest way to get started. You can transition to another entity structure as your business grows.

Tip: Consider consulting an attorney or a qualified professional for this step, as their experience will be extremely valuable. They will be able to help you with everything that you need to have to be compliant with everything.

Register your popcorn business

You will need to make sure that your business is registered and follows all rules and regulations as set forth by the authorities. These rules vary from state to state. You can consider a quick visit to the local chamber of commerce and know about your obligations.

Additionally, depending on where you are located and the business model you decide, you may be legally required to obtain certain permits and licenses before you can start your own popcorn business.

Registering a business name

As you already know, you will need a name for your business. Unfortunately, you can’t just choose any name you like. You will need to make sure that the name is not in use by any other person and is also not a trademark of other companies.

You can check the availability of the name by visiting the state website.

Tip: If affordable, hire a brand consultant to help you get creative and set you up for an outstanding business name.

Step 4: Invest in Product & Popcorn Equipments

When starting a popcorn business, you will need more than just money and a business entity. To make your popcorn business dream a reality, you will need equipment, popcorn product supplies and a sales channel to sell it on.

The requirements will vary depending on the business model that you choose. For example, if you choose a contract manufacturing you will not need a POS system, whereas if you go with a kiosk model, a POS will be amongst the first set of things to take care of.

Some of the things that you will need, if you decide to go in retailing include:

Suppliers

You will surely need to do extensive research of suppliers for your popcorn business needs. The suppliers that you choose will complement the things that you can’t do on your own. For example, you can’t grow your own corn and will need someone to source it from. As it is the most important raw ingredient, you will need to make sure that you know the corn that you are buying from a certain supplier.

The cost at which the supplier will sell things to you will be your input costs. Given that selling popcorn is a competitive space, there is not much beyond which you can raise the prices. This lower the input costs, higher the profits will be for you.

But at the same time, you will need to make sure that you are not selling low quality products and thus aim to get the best quality possible at that price point. This is an important thing to know to have a sustainable competitive business. The corn for a $1 popcorn will be different from a gourmet $10 caramel popcorn. You can’t use the same price ingredients and thus knowing what you will be able to sell your product for, is an important information.

You should aim to find trustworthy suppliers that will be able to get you supplies on time and for the best price.

Point of sale system

A POS ( point of sale ) is a necessary system you will need to invest in. It is a 21st century version of a good old cash register. This is where your staff will be able to take orders and payments from customers.

There are many POS systems available in the market and you can do your research to select the one that is in your budget and meet your needs.

Buy or rent equipments

Before you can launch your business, you will need to procure equipment that is needed to create the popcorn products. As the investment in equipment can be in thousands of dollars, you can consider renting them in the beginning. Once the business starts making money, you will always have an option to upgrade your equipment and buy them.

Assess the costs

You will need to understand what you will have to pay right away, what can wait and what will be a recurring expense. The different types of costs that you will need to consider are as following:

  • Fixed costs
  • Variable costs
  • Marginal costs

Tip: Don't make the mistake of buying all your equipment and supplies without testing your business in real life. These costs are sunk in costs and will hurt your popcorn business profits.

Step 5: The Financials - Support Your Popcorn Business Growth

There will come a time when you will feel the requirement of money to scale your business. In the beginning stages, you will actually be spending money from your initial investment corpus. But once the business scales, you will need to secure more funds to support your business growth potential.

Worry not, this is the case with every other entrepreneur out there and your popcorn business is no exception. Luckily there are a ton of options available for you to secure external funds.

We have listed a few options to consider:

  • Friends and family
  • Angel investor
  • Venture capital
  • Short term business loan
  • Small business loan
  • Credit card

Step 6: Marketing

By now you should have a popcorn business that is setup and ready to make sales. But do the customers know that you are ready? How will you tell them about your business?

Each and every business needs a way to market themselves and your popcorn business is no exception. You will need a way to get paying customers for your business.

These are the questions that you will now need to answer as a part of your popcorn business marketing plan. The success of your popcorn business will now depend on how well you can do marketing for your business.

Before you can start writing your marketing plan, you need to get some marketing fundamentals sorted out first. These are also called the four Ps of marketing: Product, Price, Promotion and Place.

After you have a clear understanding of the above fundamentals of marketing, you can start marketing your popcorn business.

  • Email marketing
  • PPC marketing such as Google Ads, Facebook Ads
  • Instagram marketing
  • Tiktok marketing
  • Traditional marketing
  • Local guides
  • Online review platforms

Tip: Establishing your online presence and nurturing your customer base is one of the most important steps in growing your business.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step

This may include a business license, a food-handling permit, and any other permits required by your city or state. It's important to research the specific requirements in your area before starting your business.

5. Management & Organization of Your Popcorn Business.

The second part of your popcorn business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your popcorn business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Popcorn Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a popcorn business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a popcorn business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your popcorn business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your popcorn business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your popcorn business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.

Your business plan creates a road map for how you will structure, operate and grow your popcorn business. A solid business plan shows how you will build a profitable popcorn enterprise. Additionally, it can help you convince others to invest in your business for faster growth.

Quick tip: Include a Strategy and Implementation section that summarizes your marketing and sales strategies. This section should include how you plan to enter and expand your market. It also contains the details regarding your pricing and cost strategies (including your expected popcorn profit margin) as well as pertinent information about the logistics of how to start a popcorn business.

Your business plan also provides information about your operating cycle, number of employees and recruitment strategies. If you plan to have regular business hours, put those in your business plan as well.

(And don’t worry, these can all be changed at a later stage. In fact, you’ll probably end up changing things as you do more market research. But having a business plan like this now that captures your vision is a great starting point.)

2. Choose a name for your business

Brainstorming a great name for your new popcorn business can take some time, but it’s a really fun part of the process.

But one key aspect of this should be to only choose a business name where the domain name is available too. After all, you want people to be able to find you online.

For checking domain name availability (and actually buying it), I always use Hover . I’ve found it to be really cheap and secure and they’ve always been helpful when I’ve had questions.

(For example, at the time of writing this, the one below is still available and would be a great popcorn business name!)

3. Create your business’ site

As your site will be one of the first things that potential customers see when looking for you, your business’ website is a hugely important asset for your company.

You can easily launch your website yourself – even if you don’t have any tech experience!

See our step-by-step guide on how to start your own site to see just how to do this in less than 20 minutes .

You can easily do this yourself. For example, Kadence is a great theme for non-tech people to design their own sites by just clicking and dragging sections to make it look good, rather than dealing with complicated coding.

Alternatively, you could simply buy a pre-made theme or hire someone to do it for you. Fiverr can be good for this, with some excellent freelancers on there whose reviews will show you the great work they can do.

4. Lock in your social media profiles

Social media is going to be huge in promoting your gourmet popcorn business so locking down the relevant handles that match your business’ name is important.

That said, you don’t need all of them as this can stretch yourself too thin, so it’s best to focus your efforts where your customers are. At the very least, this will likely include Facebook and Instagram.

5. Sort out the legalities

After choosing a business name, you’ll want to take care of the following housekeeping items to remain legal and compliant with state and federal laws.

man reading at a desk how to start a popcorn business

Firstly, you’ll need to register your business with the appropriate state and federal authorities. Then, you can apply for an employer identification number (EIN). You’ll need an EIN to file taxes and set up a bank account for your popcorn empire.

Finally, use your business name and EIN to apply for permits and licenses required by your state government. These requirements vary by industry, location, and other considerations, so check with your local Chamber of Commerce to see the exact legal requirements to start a popcorn business in your area. After all, no one wants to accidentally start an illegal side hustle .

FYI: If this all sounds a bit hard, take a look at this service offered by BetterLegal . For a flat fee, they’ll have your business up and running in two business days . All you have to do is spend five minutes filling in some forms and they’ll take care of the rest.

6. Fund your business

Given that you’ll have already put together your business plan first, you can itemize all the things you’ll need to get started, including things like the popcorn business equipment you’ll need. This will help you calculate your startup capital.

If you have enough cash on hand, you can go ahead right away with your business plans. However, most entrepreneurs raise capital by taking out a loan or finding investors. Others crowdfund, save money or look for venture capital.

Researching ideas for raising business funds allows you to discover unique ways to come up with cash. Fortunately, starting a popcorn business doesn’t have to cost you your life savings.

7. Pick your business location

Do you want to start your popcorn business at home or immediately jump into a commercial location?

Going into the popcorn business or gourmet popcorn business gives you a lot of options for where you will produce and distribute your product. For example, you can partner with catering services to set up popcorn carts at birthdays, bar mitzvahs and community events.

cafe for popcorn business

(This is actually why many people treat selling food as their weekend job on the side of their nine-to-five or even as a part time job if they’re looking to avoid full time hours.)

Keep in mind that the location of your business impacts your legal obligations, taxes, popcorn production capacity and revenue.

8. Choose a business structure

You also need to choose a business structure so that you can register as a legal entity. This impacts your personal liability and how much you will pay in taxes. It may benefit you to choose a limited liability company, general partnership or sole proprietorship for your popcorn business.

Generally, I suggest a sole proprietorship for a small gourmet popcorn shop or catering sideline. This can help you save money on taxes and limit your personal risk.

That said, if you intend to grow the business and have multiple stores or chains, you will need to form a general partnership or Limited Liability Company, LLC to onboard new partners.

You can learn how your business structure impacts your taxes on the IRS website. I’d also strongly recommend that you talk to a professional about this to ensure you have everything in order.

9. Conduct market research

According to the Small Business Association (SBA), popcorn entrepreneurs and other new businesses must prioritize market research early on . While conducting market research, you’ll find out the wants and needs of your target demographic. You need this information to successfully start a popcorn business.

It’s equally important to understand businesses in your area that already offer snacks to hungry consumers. Once you understand the other businesses in the area, it will help you develop your niche market. Ultimately, you have to determine what will make people buy your popcorn over the products of your competitors.

woman talking on the phone about how to start a popcorn business

According to the SBA, answering the following questions in your market research can help you understand your target market:

  • What type of consumers will pay premium prices for gourmet popcorn?
  • How large is the target market? Think beyond the moviegoer crowd and consider unique places that you can reach hungry consumers. (Baseball games, Homecoming parades, etc.)
  • What income range can afford to pay more than $10 or more for bespoke popcorn flavors.
  • Where do your customers live or hangout? Where can you reach them?
  • How can you identify new markets that aren’t already saturated with snack goods?
  • How much are customers willing to pay for great popcorn?

10. Consider other monetization options

Once you’ve done your market research, it’s normal to perhaps want to revise your business plan to either expand on the popcorn business ideas you’ve had or remove some aspects of it that may not work out in practice.

And if you want to keep your business solely focused on it’s original goal, which may be, say, selling popcorn from a food truck, then that’s great! Alternatively, you may have realized that you’ve stumbled on a great idea involving new income streams .

For example, if you find that certain flavors become very popular quickly, consider creating an online recipe book with your favorite popcorn toppings laid out. You don’t have to give away your secret sauce, just provide enough material for at home popcorn aficionados to express their creativity and develop loyalty to your brand.

11. Start building your online presence

You’ve already secured your website in an earlier step, but it’s important to keep in mind what it’s used for so you can keep doing that.

Broadly speaking, you’ll use your website to provide informative content for potential customers, sell your product and offer discounts to repeat purchases, among many other functions. This means, even before your official launch, it’s critical to ensure all of this is added to your site. That way, any potential customers you get even just after launch will be able to see everything they need on there.

man on laptop

And after your initial launch, you should provide a continuous stream of content customized for search engine optimization, to attract new customers in addition to those who search for you specifically.

This also applies to any social media profiles that you’ve created relating to your new popcorn business, which can be invaluable for helping you to advertise your products.

Is a popcorn business profitable?

Popcorn doesn’t cost a lot of money to make, even if you offer customized toppings. Therefore, a popcorn business venture can definitely be profitable. Popcorn has also consistently been popular, including as new flavors appear on the market, meaning your product should always sell, depending on the location where you do this.

That is, when it comes to starting a popcorn business, where you sell this may become more of a question than your product.

Everyone loves popcorn, so you already know your product is popular. But it’s important to ensure you’re offering it in the right locations.

This could include if your focus is on selling it at certain events, like having a gourmet popcorn truck at weddings. In that case, finding soon-to-be brides and grooms to ensure they know about you will be key.

What supplies do you need to sell popcorn?

Popcorn comes with high profit margins to help you quickly recover the initial cost of supplies and equipment. You also won’t have to spend a lot of money on labor costs, especially if you plan to sell the popcorn directly to customers yourself.

The basic supplies for starting a popcorn business include the following:

  • Popcorn machine
  • Bags with company logo
  • Salt and oil
  • Seasonings and toppings
  • Promotional materials

There are many other supplies that can make your business run more efficiently. However, compared to other products, you can expect low overhead costs for producing and selling popcorn.

How much money can you make selling popcorn?

Budget about $0.22 for supplies to make a small order of popcorn. You can then sell the order for at least $1.25, netting an 87% profit. And the profit margin is even larger on bigger orders, which may cost you slightly more to make but can be sold for an even larger profit.

popcorn

As you can tell, the popcorn profit margin is much higher than you’ll see for a lot of other products, which is one reason why starting a popcorn business can be so appealing.

And these profits can definitely add up. Just take the example of Popcorn Palace, which had $8.5 million in sales in 2014.

How much should I charge for popcorn?

The amount you should charge for your popcorn will largely depend on your competitors’ pricing and a comparison of your product range against theirs. In general, though, a small order can start at $1.25 with larger or more gourmet versions increasing in price accordingly.

That said, product pricing is something of an art. You can sell gourmet popcorn for more than $10 per pound. In fact, Caja Popcorn takes home nearly $24 million for a 1-gallon tin of gourmet popcorn.

I believe in letting the results of your market research guide you in setting prices for new products.

Is selling popcorn a good business?

Selling popcorn can be a good business. You can start a gourmet popcorn business for $1,000 or less, depending on the types of toppings, packaging and other supplies you need. Fortunately, popcorn kernels, dry seasonings and oils do well in storage for long periods of time, allowing you to take advantage of bulk order discounts.

And as outlined above, the popcorn profit margin is much higher than other products, especially in the food industry.

In addition, while market research is important to find the best, specific niche for you, everyone knows popcorn is a popular product. This means you’ve already taken out the question of whether people actually want to buy your product.

Why is it a good idea to start a popcorn business?

High profit margins.

People are willing to pay premium prices for their favorite snacks. Although it costs theaters less than a dollar to make a large bag of popcorn, moviegoers happily pay $7.00 for something to nosh on while they catch the latest blockbuster.

By adding some fancy labeling and attractive but inexpensive packaging, you can easily charge even more for gourmet popcorn you sell at catered events or as part of your food truck business. Combining popcorn sales with other sidelines can help you increase your profit margin even more.

Unleash your customers’ creativity.

By offering several flavors and toppings, you can let your customers invent their own gourmet popcorn.

People love the opportunity to express their creativity and people also love good food. Therefore, you can make a huge profit if you market your business or event properly.

popcorn

The perfect recession-proof food product

Even at prices between $10 and $20 per pound, gourmet popcorn won’t break the bank for most consumers, even during a recession.

If you do need to generate sales during a down economy, offering two-for-one sales keeps your product moving and still gives you a healthy margin.

How can I increase popcorn sales?

After you learn how to start a popcorn business, it’s time to expand your footprint. There are a number of ways you can do that.

Find local partners

Consider partnering with a chain of gastropubs or sports franchises, offering them exclusive rights to customized product lines.

You can even create a customized flavor that ties in with your partner’s branding or a new product they’re releasing.

Create a gourmet popcorn appetizer for a local restaurant

If you (or someone you know) owns a family restaurant or a sports grill, expand your menu to include gourmet popcorn. This fast, yummy snack is the perfect pairing for buddies watching the game or enjoying a few beers on a Friday night.

Keep your flavors casual by adding cheese or caramel, or upgrade your popcorn selections with truffle oil, herbs and other heady flavors.

Here are a few flavors to consider adding to your popcorn appetizers and entrees:

  • Parmesan rosemary
  • Buffalo sauce
  • Salt and vinegar

Offer promotional incentives

Bundle popcorn with soda, candy and other concessions at local sporting events. You can also offer free popcorn samples for kids when their parents make another purchase.

This creates goodwill and gets the word out about how delicious your popcorn tastes.

Create popcorn stations

With a popcorn maker, you can take your business on the road. If you already cater events, popcorn stations make an attractive addition to a carnival theme or during cocktail events. Popcorn machines decorated with attractive branding can help promote your side hustle and increase your profits at any event.

popcorn

Display a vintage cart to take consumers back to their younger years. This festive addition will put guests in the mood to celebrate and can boost beverage and other food sales.

If you’re looking for some sweet popcorn ideas, consider mixed berry, cookies and cream, peanut butter and chocolate, and cinnamon and sugar flavors. All these combinations complement the salty taste of popcorn very well.

Provide freebies

Offering free products can be a highly effective way to attract new customers.

For example, you can ask schools or colleges in your area if you can hand out free popcorn for a day. You could also approach any conferences or trade fairs to see if they would be willing to host you for a few hours.

Requirements to start a popcorn business

We’ve already mentioned that the process of starting a popcorn business isn’t that hard, but there are still some requirements to start a popcorn business. With that in mind, here are some great ideas that can help your business succeed from day one:

1. Buy or hire your popcorn business equipment

You may not want to buy this outright, especially if you don’t have much capital yet, which is why hiring it may be a better option for you.

Leasing this equipment can also come with other advantages, like the fact that the leasing company will maintain the equipment for you and replace it if it stops working.

You’ll need to particularly stock up on mixers, candy coaters, popcorn machines, flavors and toppings as you prepare to launch or expand your business. It can also help to try out different popcorn poppers to find out which ones can stand the wear and tear of your commercial needs.

2. Purchase supplies

The exact supplies you’ll need will depend on what you plan to sell. Of course, unpopped kernels are a must, but here are a few ideas to differentiate your business for which you’ll need various items:

  • Make flavored un – popped popcorn.
  • Add a microwaveable version of your bestsellers.
  • Sell bagged and branded ready-to-crunch popcorn.

Also, team up with bulk suppliers. Loading up on spices, herbs and sauces can save you a significant amount of money. Most toppings have a long shelf life, and you can take advantage of this by ordering large quantities for discounted prices.

popcorn

3. Rent commercial space (if you plan to have a fixed location)

It’s a good idea to rent rather than buy commercial space for at least the first year of your business.

If the business takes off you may need a larger facility, or you may end up wanting to downsize. Renting gives you this flexibility.

4. Figure out distribution channels

Have you figured out how you will distribute your gourmet popcorn? Does it make sense to buy your own vans, food trucks or other vehicles to help get your products into the hands of clients faster?

For online-based gourmet popcorn companies, setting up an account with UPS, FedEx and USPS can help you save money on delivery costs.

On the other hand, if you plan to start a brick-and-mortar company, it still makes sense to start a website for the company. You will eventually want to expand into digital sales, and the website is the best way to attract organic traffic to your site.

5. Launch with some fanfare

Whether your launch party includes a few dozen or a few hundred people, create some buzz around the event. The opening of your gourmet popcorn business should come with fanfare, lots of promotional material and plenty of free samples.

During your launch party, hand out numerous coupons for free samples or deep discounts. Whether that means setting up a booth at the farmers market or going door to door to promote your product, starting out strong can help you gain an early foothold in your target locations.

6. Refine techniques as needed

Don’t expect to get everything right the first time out. Even if you hire a marketing guru to help you push your posh popcorn, not every marketing event will draw in the crowds. However, you should use your failures as learning experiences so that you do better the next time.

By refining your techniques along the way, you can find out whether teens and adults like teriyaki better than jalapeño or dill pickle flavors (my personal favorite!). From kettle corn loaded with caramel to hot air popcorn doused with truffle oil, you’ll eventually hit on the right combination to expand your basement business to a popcorn phenomenon.

Final thoughts on how to start a gourmet popcorn business

Once you learn how to start a popcorn business, you’ll see that it’s really not that complicated. In particular, once you’ve sorted out the legal aspects relating to serving food, this can be a great, low-cost business to launch.

As seen by people who’ve done this already, a popcorn business can be very profitable, especially with the range of gourmet popcorn business ideas that are out there now. And with the popcorn profit margin being much higher than other products, especially those based around food that always has to be kept fresh, selling popcorn could definitely be a good business for you to launch.

If you’re not a a regular reader of the blog, let’s get you up to speed… I’m starting a popcorn business! At first, I plan generate all my sales at events using a concession trailer similar to kettle corn vendors you’ve seen at little craft fairs and pumpkin patches.

This business plan template outlines my estimated cost to get started, where I source supplies, the permits I’ll need, where I’m planning to vend. In other words, I’m sharing everything you would want included in a food business you intend to operate!

Since this is a real business I’ll be adding as much detail as possible. I strongly urge you do the same if you are thinking about starting a popcorn business too. If you want to keep tabs on this business, don’t forget to signup for the Food Business Startup Kit here to get regular progress reports. Executive summary

Mission statement, market analysis, management structure, product line and service, sales and marketing, funding request, financial projections, identify food source of ingredients, popping equipment, download templates.

The goal of the executive summary is gives anyone who reads the document a crib notes version of the business. The executive summary should be able to stand on it’s own and explain to potential investors or family members how you expect to make money.

Most business should be able to explain exactly what they do in only a few sentences. The rest of the document is reserved for the detailed operation of the business. Here’s my executive summary for a small popcorn business:

Temecula Popcorn Company is a small-batch popcorn maker with unique flavors that serves at popular locations like wineries, farmer’s markets, and other live events. As the brand grows locally, we plan to test market selling our products in local grocers.

This is our rotating menu of small batch popcorn flavors. Each popcorn comes in a large size clear plastic bag. Tentative retail prices are listed below.

  • Traditional Kettle Corn – $6
  • Parmesan Rosemary – $6
  • Garlic Herb – $6
  • Everything Bagel – $6
  • Salt & Vinegar – $6
  • Citrus Popcorn – $6
  • Pumpkin Spice – $6 (Fall Only)

We will serve customers who visit events in the Temecula / Murrieta on weekends. The combined population of these two cities is approximately 230,000 according to Wikipedia. On weekends visitors to this region attracts an even larger group of people that come to the area to visit over 40 local wineries and attend special events. This market offers Temecula Popcorn Company more than enough potential customers to operate profitably.

Competition:

There are numerous local competitors offering kettle corn at events. These specific competitors are detailed later this this business plan. We plan to differentiate our product through a combination of unique popcorn flavors (like Pumpkin Spice and Salt & Vinegar) in addition to better branding that uses imagery of hot air balloons (a common sight in this area) and consistent customer service.

Management:

Temecula Popcorn Company will be operated by the owner in the early days. In the future, we will explore hiring part-time staff for operations and to expand locations.

Funding needed:

We will require about $40,000 in capital to be open for business. This will cover the costs of purchasing a custom built popcorn trailer, all the initial inventory, and business licenses. These funds will be acquired through a combination of personal savings and loans. No outside investors will be leveraged to start the company.

Financial projections:

We anticipate paying off all business debt within 12 – 16 months of opening. We anticipate hitting this mark even with modest revenue expectations and operating on weekends only. After paying off all debt, we will consider reinvesting profit into growth for the company.

The mission statement is a formal summary of the aims and values of a company. For many new businesses it’s important to develop a mission statement that goes beyond making money. A broader vision that includes a specific social cause can be helpful in motivating yourself, employees, and can be used as a creative way to gain more press coverage for a startup.

My mission statement is below:

Our mission is to provide the highest quality, small-batch popcorn with creative flavors. We continually think of ways to create consistent, memorable, and fun customer interactions.  Our mission also includes being a good member of the community by donating to and helping fundraising efforts of deserving local organizations or people.

Industry overview: There are 15 billion quarts of popcorn consumed annually in the United States according to The Popcorn Board . The industry has a market value of $2 billion with the ready-to-eat products continuing to grow in demand. This ready-to-eat popcorn could be a future growth opportunity for this business as well. This is a product with strong consumer demand and growth opportunities.

Target market: At first we will generate sales from individuals and families that attend local events where we vend. Our market has over 40 wineries within 15 miles, numerous farmer’s markets and flea markets where we can vend regularly. As we begin generating more sales, we will work to identify a more specific target market.

Competition: We’ve conducted a competition analysis of other popcorn vendors. Established players in the local market serve traditional kettle corn without innovative flavors. The current competitors do not offer any unique brand experience either.

Pop’n Mama Kettle Corn – Kettle corn tent that has been around since the 1990s in the area. Serves traditional kettle corn only from a tent. Sells large bags from $7 – $10 depending on event.

Sweet Country Kettle Corn – Popcorn in a tent that vends at a variety of local markets. This business offers a variety of popcorn flavors.

Kettle Masters – Traditional kettle corn from a tent. No special brand differentiator.

There are numerous other smaller popcorn vendors that offer traditional kettle corn from a tent.

Pricing and forecast:

We expect to sell popcorn at $5.00 per bag with a goal of hitting 100 sales per day on average. This will result in $40,000 in gross sales in year one assuming 80 vending days.

sales goal

Our goal is to generate $500 in sales each day vending.

For most startup businesses like food trucks or small kettle corn tents, you don’t need to spend much time fine tuning a management structure. If you plan to own / operate the business then the buck begins and ends with you.

As you grow the business, you can begin to evaluate different roles to bring in. One of the best first hires would be a part-time person that could sell popcorn at events on weekends. This would allow you to take time off, while generating sales at a proven location. Another option is to hire a bookkeeper part-time to help with tax filing.

Our primary way of generating sales and marketing the business will be serving at live events where families gather. The most important first step will be to identify vending spots that are profitable for our products.

General ideas include wineries, flea markets, farmer’s markets, and fundraising events where we can do revenue splits with the organizers. We also hope to vend at seasonal events like pumpkin patches and other seasonal celebrations. Here are the specific places we plan to test.

vending locations

List of vending locations.

Here is a map where this vending spots are located. As you can see these opportunities are located nearby each other.

vending map

Map of vending locations.

While at live events, we also hope to establish a strong social media marketing presence. By attending a lot of live events we will have plenty of opportunities to take photos and videos in fun locations and share those online. Overtime we hope to build a local following that we can use to help share our location and cross promote the events we’re working. We will be focused on Instagram as our primary social network initially.

We will require $40,000 in startup capital to open this business. These funds will cover buying the popcorn trailer, initial inventory of popcorn, equipment, and licenses.

  • $20,000 personal savings
  • $20,000 traditional bank loan

I hope to be able to pay off the loan and be debt free after 12 months of operation.

If you’re seeking financial backing from investors, you’ll want to provide 5 year financial projections at a minimum. But for a self-funded business, a shorter time frame like this is sufficient.

I still recommend making basic financial estimates even if you don’t plan to bring in investors. This will help you determine if the business is worth starting based on the current business plan.

This is where you can insert additional information about your business. Personally, I like to include copies of documents like permits, licenses, and details about what equipment and supplies I plan to buy. This creates a one-stop  location for finding out where to source popcorn kernels or bags of salt in case I forget. This is a free-form area of the business plan so don’t worry about the correct formatting here.

My understanding is I’ll need to order by the pallet from this company to have popcorn shipped the farm in from Nebraska.

Salt or Seasoning Shakers

10 oz Stainless Steel Shaker with Handle

(2) 22 oz Stainless Steel Dredge Salt Shakers no Handle

Caldo Linen Kitchen Apron – This is a much more expensive and or premium option for an apron. But I also really like the way it looks. I plan to spring for the extra bucks to order this apron for myself. After all if you look good, you feel good. I’m also telling myself this small touch will elevate the appearance of my brand.

12 Pack of White Aprons – I’ll need a few of these anyway as aprons will fade over time.  Might as well stock up at an affordable price.

Black Aprons 2 Pack – I’m on the fence right now and might purchase some black aprons. My thinking is these will be easier to keep clean. They can also be picked up in bulk for only a few dollars per unisex apron.

I plan to pair the apron with a basic color t-shirt underneath. This will serve as the uniform for employees operating the business (AKA: ME).

Food Storage Containers

You can’t have open bags of popcorn or sugar laying around your popcorn trailer. As a result, need to order commercial-grade food storage containers with lids to seal any opened product. We are looking at either 18 quart or 22 quart sizes. The 18 quart clear storage container should be able to store an entire 25 lb bag of sugar or popcorn kernels in it. I’m planning to buy four – six of these.

Rubbermaid Commercial Containers

Cambro Food Storage Container

Propane Tanks

I plan to purchase two 40 lb propane tanks to pop the corn. This is twice the size of a regular 20 lb propane tank you pick up at a gas station for your BBQ grill. A 40 lb propane tank should be able to cook 350 pounds of popcorn. You can order an empty 40 lb propane tank just about anywhere including Walmart or Lowe’s according to their websites.

Portable Vending Concession Cart Sink

I will be operating this popcorn business in the great state of California. The health code requirements here to vend in public are higher here than in a lot of other states. As a result, I will be investing in this small mobile, 4 compartment sink. This includes a convenient hand washing station too. Installing this sink means I shouldn’t need to mess around with plumbing inside the unit since everything will be self contained.

Fire Extinguisher

I plan to contact the local health department to see what size and brand of a fire extinguisher they recommend. This is a piece of safety something I will be cutting corners on to save a couple bucks.

Popcorn is also popular around the globe, and as bold flavors like chocolate, jalapeno and peanut butter gain ground, the industry is set to nearly double by 2031. You could get in on this action by starting your own popcorn business, which could be home-based, a cart, or a gourmet shop. Whichever you choose, you can spread joyful deliciousness while making a good living.

But before you start popping away, you would be wise to familiarize yourself with the entrepreneurial process. Luckily, this step-by-step guide lays out everything you need to know to launch a successful popcorn business.

Looking to register your business? A limited liability company (LLC) is the best legal structure for new businesses because it is fast and simple.

Trends and challenges

Trends in the popcorn industry include:

  • Franchises like Doc Popcorn are expanding rapidly, offering bold flavors like apple crisp and dill pickle. Opening a franchise store could be an option, though an online business requires much less investment.
  • Gluten-free and non-GMO popcorn is growing in demand. Those products are also innovating and creating unique flavors.

Challenges in the popcorn industry include:

  • Supply chain issues are creating challenges in the timely delivery of popcorn to international customers.
  • Rising prices are eating into the profit margins of popcorn businesses, causing them to raise their prices.

How much does it cost to start a popcorn business?

Startup costs for a popcorn business range from $3,300 to $7,300 if you’re starting an online popcorn business from home. Costs include a commercial popcorn machine, packaging materials, and ingredients.

If you start a popcorn cart, you can add $2,500 to $5,000 to those totals. A popcorn shop will cost at least $20,000 more.

You’ll need a handful of items to successfully launch your popcorn business, including:

  • Popcorn machine
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Oils and salts
  • Bags and labels
  • Toppings and seasonings

How much can you earn from a popcorn business?

The average price of a bag of prepared popcorn is about $5. Larger bags can cost $7 to $12. These calculations will assume an average price of $6. Your profit margin after ingredients and packaging should be high, around 70%.

In your first year or two, you could work from home and sell 200 bags per week, bringing in $62,000 in annual revenue. This would mean nearly $44,000 in profit, assuming that 70% margin. As your brand gains recognition and you ramp up your marketing efforts, sales could climb to 1000 bags a week. At this stage, you’d rent a commercial space with more equipment and hire staff, reducing your profit margin to around 30%. With annual revenue of $312,000, you’d still make a strong profit of $93,600.

Step 2: hone your idea.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting a popcorn business, it’s a good idea to hone your concept in preparation to enter a competitive market.

Market research will give you the upper hand, even if you’re already positive that you have a perfect product or service. Conducting market research is important, because it can help you understand your customers better, who your competitors are, and your business landscape.

Why? Identify an opportunity

Research popcorn businesses in your area and online to examine their products, price points, and what sells best. You’re looking for a market gap to fill. For instance, maybe the market is missing a gourmet kettle corn business, or a gourmet popcorn shop or cart.

popcorn business plan in india

You might consider targeting a niche market by specializing in a certain aspect of your industry, such as gluten-free popcorn or savory popcorn.

This could jumpstart your word-of-mouth marketing and attract clients right away.

What? Determine your products or services

You’ll just need to come up with a list of popcorn recipes you want to make. In addition to bags of popcorn, you could sell popcorn in decorative tins for higher prices.

How much should you charge for popcorn?

Prices for bags of popcorn range from $5 to $12 based on the size of the bag. After the costs of ingredients and packaging, you should aim for a profit margin of about 70%.

Once you know your costs, you can use this Step By Step profit margin calculator to determine your mark-up and final price points. Remember, the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.

Who? Identify your target market

Your target market is nearly 80% of the US population plus the global community if you want to sell internationally, so you should spread out your marketing to include sites like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. You could also try to get local markets to put your popcorn on their shelves. You can find market owners on LinkedIn or call them directly. You can find them on Google or Yelp.

Where? Choose your business premises

In the early stages, you may want to run your business from home to keep costs low. But as your business grows, you’ll likely need to hire workers for various roles and may need to rent a popcorn making facility or a shop space. You can find commercial space to rent in your area on sites such as Craigslist , Crexi , and Instant Offices .

When choosing a commercial space, you may want to follow these rules of thumb:

  • Central location accessible via public transport
  • Ventilated and spacious, with good natural light
  • Flexible lease that can be extended as your business grows
  • Ready-to-use space with no major renovations or repairs needed

Step 3: Brainstorm a Popcorn Business Name

Your business name is your business identity, so choose one that encapsulates your objectives, services, and mission in just a few words. You probably want a name that’s short and easy to remember, since much of your business, and your initial business in particular, will come from word-of-mouth referrals.

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • Name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as “popcorn” or “gourmet popcorn”, boosts SEO
  • Name should allow for expansion, for ex: “Pop-N-Goodness” over “Vegan Popcorn Haven.”
  • Avoid location-based names that might hinder future expansion
  • Use online tools like the Step by Step Business Name Generator . Just type in a few keywords and hit “generate” and you’ll have dozens of suggestions at your fingertips.

Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.

Find a Domain

Powered by GoDaddy.com

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that sets your business apart. Once you pick your company name, and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.

Step 4: Create a Popcorn Business Plan

Every business needs a plan. This will function as a guidebook to take your startup through the launch process and maintain focus on your key goals. A business plan also enables potential partners and investors to better understand your company and its vision:

  • Executive Summary: A brief overview of your popcorn business, highlighting key points and objectives.
  • Business Overview: Detailed information about the popcorn business, including its mission, vision, and business model.
  • Product and Services: Clearly define the types of popcorn products and services your business offers, emphasizing uniqueness or specialization.
  • Market Analysis: Research and analysis of the popcorn market, identifying target demographics, trends, and potential opportunities.
  • Competitive Analysis: Evaluation of competitors in the popcorn industry, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and your business’s competitive advantages.
  • Sales and Marketing: Strategies for promoting and selling your popcorn products, including pricing, distribution, and promotional activities.
  • Management Team: Introduce key members of the management team, emphasizing their relevant skills and experience.
  • Operations Plan: Details on how the popcorn business will operate, covering production, supply chain, and logistics.
  • Financial Plan: Financial projections, including revenue forecasts, expenses, and a break-even analysis for the popcorn business.
  • Appendix: Supplementary materials, such as detailed market research data, additional financial information, or any supporting documents relevant to the business plan.

what to include in a business plan

If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.

Step 5: Register Your Business

Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.

Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!

Choose where to register your company

Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you’re planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to popcorn businesses.

If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind, it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.

Choose your business structure

Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your popcorn business will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.

Here are the main options:

  • Sole Proprietorship – The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
  • General Partnership – Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
  • C Corp – Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends, rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
  • S Corp – An S-Corporation refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. An S-Corp can be either a corporation or an LLC , which just need to elect to be an S-Corp for tax status. In an S-Corp, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.

types of business structures

We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes

The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identification Number , or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail or fax: visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.

Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.

popcorn business plan in india

The IRS website also offers a tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.

It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with your taxes to ensure you’re completing them correctly.

Step 7: Fund your Business

Securing financing is your next step and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:

  • Bank loans: This is the most common method but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and strong credit history.
  • SBA-guaranteed loans: The Small Business Administration can act as guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
  • Government grants: A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
  • Friends and Family: Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
  • Crowdfunding: Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer an increasingly popular low-risk option, in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
  • Personal: Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.

Bank and SBA loans are probably the best option, other than friends and family, for funding a popcorn business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept.

types of business financing

Step 8: Apply for Popcorn Business Licenses and Permits

Starting a popcorn business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments. For starters, you should check the cottage food laws of your state to see what’s required for a popcorn business. Some states require that you attend a food safety class and pass health inspections.

Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.

You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.

You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.

This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.

If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.

Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account

Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .

Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your popcorn business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple, and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.

Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.

Step 10: Get Business Insurance

Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.

Here are some types of insurance to consider:

  • General liability: The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
  • Business Property: Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
  • Equipment Breakdown Insurance: Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
  • Worker’s compensation: Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
  • Property: Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
  • Commercial auto: Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
  • Professional liability: Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
  • Business owner’s policy (BOP): This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of the above insurance types.

types of business insurance

Step 11: Prepare to Launch

As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.

Essential software and tools

Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.

You may want to use industry-specific software, such as LS Retail , Vend , or Retail Pro , to manage purchasing, inventory, and invoicing.

  • Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , Freshbooks , and Xero .
  • If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences for filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.

Develop your website

Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.

You can create your own website using services like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech-savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.

They are unlikely to find your website, however, unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.

Launching a popcorn business is an exciting venture, and to ensure its success, you need effective marketing strategies that go beyond just having a website and networking. Here are practical tips to elevate your popcorn business.

  • Engage in Local Partnerships: Partner with local businesses, such as movie theaters, cafes, or event venues, to offer your popcorn as a tasty snack option. Collaborations can expand your customer base and boost sales.
  • Mobile Popcorn Stand: Set up a mobile popcorn stand at popular local events, farmers’ markets, or community gatherings. This not only increases visibility but also provides direct interaction with potential customers.
  • Unique Flavors and Bundles: Differentiate your brand by offering unique and exciting popcorn flavors. Create special bundles or themed packages for holidays, events, or seasons to attract customers looking for a distinctive treat.
  • Social Media Challenges and Giveaways: Leverage social media platforms to run engaging challenges or giveaways. Encourage customers to share their popcorn experiences, tag friends, or create user-generated content, fostering a sense of community around your brand.
  • Pop-Up Sampling Events: Organize pop-up events at high-traffic locations to offer free samples of your popcorn. This allows potential customers to taste your product, helping to build brand awareness and generate word-of-mouth marketing.
  • Loyalty Programs: Implement a loyalty program to reward repeat customers. Offer discounts, freebies, or exclusive access to new flavors to incentivize customers to keep coming back.
  • Collaborate with Influencers: Identify local influencers or food bloggers with a significant following and collaborate with them to review or promote your popcorn. Authentic endorsements can have a powerful impact on reaching new audiences.
  • Corporate Gifting Packages: Create customized popcorn gift packages suitable for corporate gifting. Target businesses looking for unique, affordable, and tasty gifts for clients, employees, or events.
  • Seasonal Promotions: Capitalize on seasonal trends and holidays by launching themed promotions. Create limited-edition flavors, packaging, or discounts to align with the festivities and capture the attention of holiday shoppers.
  • Community Sponsorships: Sponsor local sports teams, school events, or community fundraisers. This not only supports the community but also puts your brand in front of potential customers attending or participating in these activities.

Focus on USPs

Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that set it apart from the competition. Customers today are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they are able to quickly grasp how your popcorn business meets their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.

Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your popcorn business could be:

  • The wildest popcorn flavors you’ve ever tasted
  • Gluten-free, non-GMO gourmet popcorn – you won’t believe the taste!
  • Holiday tins of the tastiest gourmet popcorn, the perfect gift!

unique selling proposition

You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain. But your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running a popcorn business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been working in popcorn for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.

The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in popcorn. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership. Online businesses might also consider affiliate marketing as a way to build relationships with potential partners and boost business.

Step 12: Build Your Team

If you’re starting out small from a home kitchen, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for a popcorn business include:

  • Popcorn Makers – assist with making popcorn
  • Popcorn Packagers – package popcorn for sale and shipping
  • General Manager – ordering, accounting
  • Marketing Lead – SEO strategies, social media

At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need.

Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.

Step 13: Run a Popcorn Business – Start Making Money!

Popcorn is a fabulous treat that’s still growing in popularity, with the industry poised to nearly double in the coming years. You can get in on that booming market by starting your own popcorn business, getting creative with some bold and interesting flavors and spreading delicious joy — all while making great money.

You’re off to a great start, having learned the business launch process, so it’s time to turn on that popper and start building your popcorn empire!

  • Popcorn Business FAQs

Yes, profit margins for an online popcorn business are high. The key is to create unique flavors that will stand out in a competitive market.

Prices for bags of prepared popcorn range from $5 to $12, depending on the size of the bag. You can also sell larger tins for more.

Popcorn stands can be profitable, but success depends on factors like location, competition, pricing, product quality, and customer demand. Strategic placement in high-traffic areas, offering a variety of flavors and toppings, and providing exceptional customer service can contribute to profitability.

To differentiate your popcorn business from competitors, consider unique flavors or combinations that aren’t commonly available. Experiment with gourmet or exotic flavors, and offer customizable options for customers.

Establishing your popcorn stand in a high-traffic location can attract walk-in customers. Additionally, consider partnering with local businesses, such as movie theaters, event venues, sports arenas, or gourmet shops, to sell your products.

Consider using eye-catching packaging with attractive designs that reflect your brand. Use quality materials that keep the popcorn fresh and crispy. Include clear labels with enticing descriptions of flavors and ingredients.

Classic flavors like buttered popcorn, caramel, and cheddar cheese are generally well-liked. Other popular flavors include kettle corn, chocolate drizzle, spicy flavors like jalapeño, and sweet varieties like cinnamon sugar or toffee.

Most people consume while watching a movie, or a stage show, or during any other interesting program on television. However, kids eat them for they enjoy them as a delicious snack item. Popcorn is tasty and simple for digestion. Even if you consume a large quantity, it does not badly affect your health because it gets digested rapidly. The demand is always seen in the market, so given these requirements of the people, an individual can start manufacturing Popcorn Business with low financial assistance. In this article, we will summarize all major aspects related to how to start a Popcorn Manufacturing Business.

A guide to Popcorn Making Project Report and Business Plan

Popcorn

Why Popcorn Making has more demand? : Popcorn is a commonly preferred snack item. It is a modified form of corn in which the hard corn grains get heated and inflated, and these inflated corn grains are sold as Popcorn. Hence, stoves and pans are essential to make popcorn in villages while machines are employed for commercial preparation. But their quality relies on the special category of maize as high-quality popcorn will not be obtained with any type of maize. Therefore, for the success of this Popcorn Manufacturing business, it is essential to pick a proper type of maize.

Can we start Popcorn making as a business opportunity? Yes, this business can be initiated very easily in cities as well as in villages. For this, you don’t need a specific area or huge investment. You can even install a popcorn machine on a ready-made handcart. One can opt for packing machines for selling artistically if planned smartly. However, if one thinks it is expensive and plans to invest less money, then this packing can be performed manually.

There are many proper reasons and selling aspects. Popcorn is easy for digestion, a very delicious and famous snack item. This is why Popcorn is gaining popularity among customers of different ages. Since customers are increasing, its manufacturers are also rising in India. In cities, its usage is growing at a fast pace as the number of movie theatre complexes in the country is snowballing. With the huge potential for sales, people are inclined to begin the business. With a planned profit margin in this segment, it can be helpful for anybody to start a Popcorn Manufacturing Business as a start-up venture.

If you want to begin this business in a rural region nearby, you will use a wheelbarrow, and then you could install a machine on it. Then you will have to procure the raw material. You can keep the rate from Rs. 5 to Rs. 10 for acquiring raw material for popcorn in it and packing using the machine.

The other way is to start a popcorn-making company. You can plan by spending a little bit of capital because if you are doing this business in the city somewhat larger scale when compared to the village, then you will need proper machinery and proper packaging stuff.

If you are initiating a business in a village area, you must not acquire any type of approvals, but for a large-scale business in an urban region, you will have to spend more money on it and you must acquire some licenses that are summarised in the following section.

This is the primary registration or any business that is done under the Registrar of Companies. For this, the owner can approach a business consultant as well. The industry could be registered as micro and medium enterprises based on size.

Since the business is associated with food,

  • A food license (FSSAI) must be acquired. So that during packaging the information will be printed on a packet of popcorn.
  • The trademark registration for securing the brand name is important.
  • Popcorn Manufacturing businesses need to apply for GST registration.

About 450 Square Feet that is about 50 yards is appropriate for starting a small-scale Popcorn Manufacturing Business in the beginning. However, the owner should plan to arrange various places to perform several things as per the operations of his business. The business could demand one or two persons who can take care of the operations associated with the machine, electricity, and water facilities. In addition, you must keep a vehicle, driver, and marketing person to find out potential customers.

As far as popcorn making machines dealt, various types of popcorn making machines are existing in the market. It also has machines that use LPG gas. One must select the machine thinking of production capacity and the resources accessible to him. Even, while choosing a Popcorn machine, check whether a machine can inflate corn grains. Not only that, a load weighing machine is necessary to weigh popcorn. However, there are some firms such as Prestige, etc., that have allowed domestic popcorn making using Popcorn Maker.

Some people include butter and salt in household utensils such as pan, pickle, etc. But it is somewhat tedious to say how safe it is to sell this popcorn commercially. Maize is cultivated in many states of the nation and is not only used for popcorn but is the raw material for oil, starch, flour, liquid glucose, etc. Despite that, it is readily obtained in every segment due to the abundant cultivation. Other materials such as ghee and salt are even essential for the popcorn-making process.

The manufacturing process of Popcorn

The process of making popcorn using the Popcorn Machine is very simple. If the owner purchases direct maize from the cultivators, he can get more benefits. For this, the individual should primarily separate the corn grains from maize and next dry them properly under sunlight. After the grains get dried, these corn kernels’ impurities like corn hair will be removed. After that ghee and salt will be included in the heating segment of the machine.

Later the corn kernels are added so that the grains are transformed into popcorn due to heat. The machine will easily produce popcorn and automatically the popcorn is made. The owner has to follow the moisture-free packaging steps of Popcorn to ensure the quality of popcorn is not hampered after it is served to the customers.

Exploring the Cost of Manufacturing Popcorn in India

This is a question that many aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners may ask themselves. Popcorn has long been a popular snack enjoyed by people of all ages in various settings. Whether it’s at the movies, carnivals, sporting events, or even just at home, popcorn’s delicious taste and enticing aroma have made it a staple in the snacking world.

High Demand and Wide Consumer Appeal:

Popcorn has a universal appeal and a consistent demand. It is a snack loved by people of all ages and is often associated with entertainment and leisure activities. The aroma of freshly popped corn and the satisfying crunch make it an irresistible treat for many. This high demand and broad consumer appeal create a strong foundation for a profitable popcorn business.

Low Production Costs:

One of the key advantages of selling popcorn is its relatively low production costs. The main ingredient, popcorn kernels, is affordable and readily available, and buying in bulk can further reduce costs and increase profit margins. Additionally, the equipment required for popcorn production, such as popcorn machines and packaging materials, can be relatively inexpensive, making it accessible for small-scale entrepreneurs.

Versatility and Customization:

Another factor that contributes to the profitability of selling popcorn is its versatility. Popcorn can be customized and flavoured in various ways, allowing sellers to cater to different tastes and preferences. From classic buttered popcorn to gourmet flavours like caramel, cheese, or even unique combinations, the ability to offer a diverse range of options can attract a broader customer base and increase sales.

Scalability and Flexibility:

The popcorn business offers scalability and flexibility, allowing entrepreneurs to adapt their operations to meet demand. Popcorn can be sold in various settings, including cinemas, festivals, fairs, sporting events, malls, and online platforms. This flexibility allows sellers to target different markets and explore growth opportunities.

Add-On Sales and Profit Streams:

Popcorn can serve as a gateway product for additional sales and profit streams. Many popcorn vendors also offer complementary products such as soft drinks, candy, or nachos, which can significantly increase overall revenue. By strategically bundling products or offering combo deals, sellers can entice customers to make larger purchases, ultimately boosting profitability.

Minimal Spoilage and Long Shelf Life:

Popcorn has a relatively long shelf life if stored properly, reducing the risk of spoilage and waste. This characteristic is advantageous for popcorn sellers as it allows them to manage inventory efficiently and minimize losses. It also lets them take advantage of bulk buying opportunities without worrying about perishability.

Seasonal and Event-Based Opportunities:

Popcorn sales can experience significant boosts during specific seasons or events. For example, summer months, holidays, and local festivals often attract larger crowds and create opportunities for increased sales. Popcorn vendors can maximise their profits by capitalizing on these seasonal and event-based opportunities.

Challenges and Considerations:

While selling popcorn can be profitable, it’s essential to consider the challenges of this business. Competition can be intense, especially in high-traffic areas such as malls or cinema complexes. Differentiating your brand through unique flavours, packaging, or exceptional customer service can help you stand out.

Operational Costs and Overhead:

Although popcorn production costs are relatively low, it’s essential to factor in operational and overhead expenses. These may include rent for a physical location (if applicable), utilities, staffing, marketing, and licensing fees. By carefully managing expenses and optimizing operations, profitability can be maintained.Popcorn is a popular snack enjoyed by people of all ages across India. It’s irresistible aroma and delicious taste have become a staple in movie theatres, amusement parks, and homes. However, have you ever wondered about the cost of manufacturing popcorn in India?

Raw Materials:

The primary ingredient in popcorn is maize kernels, which are specially cultivated for their popping characteristics. Maize kernels are readily available in India and are relatively affordable compared to other snack ingredients. The cost of maize kernels can vary depending on quality, seasonality, and sourcing channels. Additionally, manufacturers may incur costs for other ingredients, such as salt, oil, flavourings, and seasonings, depending on the desired popcorn variety.

Processing and Manufacturing:

The processing and manufacturing of popcorn involve several steps contributing to the overall cost. Initially, the maize kernels undergo cleaning and sorting processes to remove impurities and ensure uniformity in size and quality. Afterwards, the kernels are heated in specialized popcorn machines that utilize hot air or oil to induce popping. The choice of equipment, energy consumption, and maintenance costs can significantly impact manufacturing expenses.

Packaging and Branding:

Packaging maintains the freshness and quality of popcorn, and manufacturers must invest in appropriate packaging materials that protect against moisture, air, and light. The cost of packaging materials, such as bags or containers, can vary based on size, design, and material composition. Additionally, branding expenses, including labelling, graphics, and marketing collateral, contribute to the overall cost of manufacturing popcorn.

Labour and Operational Costs:

The labour required for manufacturing popcorn includes machine operators, quality control personnel, packaging and labelling staff, and administrative support. The wages and salaries for these employees, along with employee benefits, training, and other operational expenses, are factors that impact the cost of production. The efficiency and productivity of the manufacturing process also influence labour and operational costs.

Quality Control and Compliance:

Consistent quality and regulatory compliance are essential aspects of popcorn manufacturing. Manufacturers must invest in quality control measures to maintain product standards, including moisture content, taste, texture, and appearance testing. Compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations, certifications, and audits may also entail additional costs to guarantee consumer safety and meet industry standards.

Distribution and Logistics:

The distribution and logistics of popcorn involve transportation, warehousing, and inventory management costs. Manufacturers must consider the expenses associated with packaging, labelling, storage, and transportation from the production facility to distribution centres or retail outlets. These costs vary based on distance, mode of transportation, fuel prices, and seasonal demand fluctuations.

Market Competition and Pricing:

Market dynamics and competition also influence the cost of manufacturing popcorn. Manufacturers must analyze market trends, consumer preferences, and pricing strategies to ensure their products remain competitive. Factors such as demand-supply dynamics, pricing of raw materials, competitor pricing, and overall market conditions affect the pricing decisions made by popcorn manufacturers.

Various factors, including raw material prices, processing and manufacturing expenses, packaging and branding costs, labour and operational expenses, quality control measures, distribution and logistics, and market dynamics, influence the cost of manufacturing popcorn in India. Popcorn manufacturers need to balance cost efficiency and product quality to meet consumer demands and remain competitive in the market. Understanding the economics behind popcorn production helps both manufacturers and consumers appreciate the value and effort that goes into creating this beloved snack.

What 10 Years of Modi Rule Has Meant for India’s Economy

Narendra Modi has kept India on its swift upward path among the world’s largest economies. Many Indians are better off, though wealth gaps have widened.

Orange streamers and confetti thrown in the air as spectator's observe someone driving by and celebrating.

By Alex Travelli

Alex Travelli, the South Asia business correspondent, has reported from New Delhi since 2013.

As Narendra Modi was storming to victory in the election of 2014, he said that “ acchhe din aane waale hain” — good times are coming.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

Open this article in the New York Times Audio app on iOS.

Now as Mr. Modi stands set to secure another term as prime minister in elections starting on April 19 , the value of India’s stock market has grown threefold since he first took office. India’s economy is almost twice as big as it was.

Stocks have risen so much because the number of Indians with enough wealth and appetite for investment risk has jumped — to nearly 5 percent of the population from barely 2 percent.

But the economic gains have been widely unequal. The bulk of India’s growth depends on those at the top of the income ladder, including a coterie of huge and tightly controlled businesses.

Ninety percent of India’s population of 1.4 billion is estimated to subsist on less than $3,500 a year . Yet in the poorest rural districts, life has been made more bearable by welfare programs that have expanded under Mr. Modi. Many of the benefits are solid and visible: sacks of free grain, toilets, gas cylinders and housing materials. Purely commercial developments have transformed village life: LED lights, cheap smartphones and nearly free mobile data have changed the nature of idle time.

While America was experiencing a “ vibecession ,” feeling glum despite upbeat economic news, India has been doing the opposite. Here many of the signals are mixed — but the vibes are fantastic. International surveys show India’s consumers have become the most upbeat anywhere.

Foreigners are also feeling good about the Modi economy. Banks like Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase are rushing to upgrade India’s weighting in their global stock and bond indexes. Chris Wood, one of the best-regarded market strategists in Asia, warned that if Mr. Modi were not re-elected this year, Indian markets could crash by 25 percent or more.

A strange thing about the spirit of optimism about the Modi economy is that India’s rates of growth over the past 10 years have been very similar to those of the decade that preceded it, under a government that Mr. Modi often blames for wrecking the country.

As real as it is, the Indian economic success story is also an attribute of what could be the singular characteristic of Mr. Modi’s years in the top job: his ability to control all levers of power, with showmanship as the first priority .

Mr. Modi’s face is everywhere, perhaps more present in New Delhi than that of any democratically elected leader in any other capital. In the run-up to the Group of 20 summit last September, his slogans took credit for virtually every positive development that could be found in this inexorably emerging economy.

In the bullish climate surrounding the Indian economy, even the pessimists are optimistic. While official statistics anticipate growth of 7.3 percent in the current fiscal year, most finance professionals in Mumbai peg the figure at 6 to 6.5 percent. The lowest estimate touches 4.5 percent, which would still beat the United States and possibly China.

Expressing even mild skepticism is avoided. Economists who depend on government work must be careful not to speak frankly. Economists who do not work with the government are becoming scarce, as independent think tanks are raided and shuttered.

Message control is much more pronounced than it was under Mr. Modi’s predecessor, the award-winning economist Manmohan Singh. India became known as a “ flailing state ” during Mr. Singh’s time in office, even with growth occasionally hitting the 10 percent mark.

Mr. Modi has been busy remaking the institutions of Indian governance. Political competition has been all but eliminated at the national level, and he has exploited animosity against the country’s Muslim minority of 200 million.

Mr. Modi has also used state power to make things happen in strictly economic affairs, mostly for better though sometimes for worse. Infrastructure is on a tear. There is some overbuilding, but the fact that building gets done is a welcome relief. Welfare programs have become more responsive.

India — especially in banking and business transactions — has made a widespread digital leap . The push began during the previous management of Mr. Singh, but Mr. Modi has run with it. The “India Stack,” a suite of software platforms that runs on the base of Aadhaar, a biometric identification system, means that Indians now have access to faster and cheaper peer-to-peer transactions than Americans.

Taxes have been overhauled. India has driven more of the economy into the formal sector, for instance by enacting a Goods and Services Tax like Europe’s value-added tax, allowing more revenue to be extracted from more people and businesses. That has freed up money for public spending and, by lowering corporate tax rates, private financing.

One minus on the digitization ledger came on Nov. 8, 2016, when at 8 p.m. Mr. Modi abruptly declared that all large currency notes were suddenly worthless. That was supposed to deprive criminals of “black money.” Instead, it crippled economic activity.

There are other ways the Indian government’s power to act decisively and usually without check has created distortions and inequalities. The biggest companies have profited wildly. Of the $1.4 trillion in wealth created by the most prestigious stock index from 2012 to 2022, 80 percent went to 20 companies, Marcellus Investment Managers in Mumbai estimated in 2022. Those companies are the ones that can talk directly to the government.

No one better illustrates the concentration of corporate wealth, and the risks associated with it, than Gautam Adani . Outside India, few knew his name until 2022, when he suddenly appeared on lists as the world’s second-richest person, after Elon Musk.

The flagship stock of Mr. Adani’s conglomerate nearly doubled in the year after Mr. Modi was elected and grew eight times larger after he was re-elected in 2019. The Adani Group became, in effect, a logistics arm of the government, building up ports, highways, bridges and solar farms at speeds never before seen.

Then last year Mr. Adani’s empire was accused of fraud by a New York short-seller, costing Mr. Adani $150 billion on paper. Though Mr. Adani, who denied the claims, has recouped most of the money he lost, the episode exposed a risk in the Modi strategy of allowing the few at the tippy top to amass enormous clout.

Companies aside, on an individual level, India’s recent growth has been uncomfortably unequal. Having the world’s biggest population explains why so many foreign investors are attracted to its consumer market. Most Indians are rural, and 75 percent of them are by most measures poor, qualifying for free food rations intended to prevent malnutrition. Though that warrants some caution, it leaves room for growth.

Sales of luxury goods have been booming, especially since the pandemic, generating yearslong waiting lists for vehicles like the Mercedes G 63. Sales of motorbikes and scooters, which transport far more Indians than all the four-wheeled cars combined, have been stagnant.

The most painful aspect of the economy is the jobs situation. Officially about 7 percent of Indians are unemployed. Vastly more are underemployed. In the past month, Indians desperate to find better incomes abroad have died trying: while crossing the United States’ borders, fighting as underequipped mercenaries for Russia in Ukraine and filling positions left empty by Palestinians forced to stop working in Israel.

And yet, the ascent of India in the world economy seems preordained. It has moved ahead of Britain to become the world’s fifth-largest economy, and it is expected to surpass Japan and Germany to become the world’s third largest within the next few years.

More multinational businesses are expected to flock to India, creating opportunities for Indians. Only a small proportion of consumers can expect to enjoy living standards taken for granted in the United States, but they are becoming more numerous by the year, and can now be found even in small cities.

Red tape remains to impede businesses without connections to the top of government. But the direction of movement is promising: Projects that used to require two years of permission-seeking can now be completed in 15 days.

Along with the acchhe din he promised in 2014, Mr. Modi pledged “minimum government, maximum governance,” sounding like a 1980s America free marketeer. In practice, his economic approach has not been defined by theory or ideology. He has thrown everything against the wall to see what sticks. He has thrown persistently, and with force. When economists talk about India, they have stopped talking about the “flailing state.”

Elon Musk to visit India for meeting with PM Modi

E lon Musk has announced on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that he will visit India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi without giving a date.

The Tesla boss is expected to announce major investment plans in the country soon.

Last month, India cut import taxes on electric vehicles (EV) for global carmakers which commit to investing $500m (£399m) and starting local production within three years.

In 2021, the Tesla boss said that India's high import duties had prevented the firm from launching its cars in the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Mr Musk wrote in a post on Wednesday : "Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!"

A senior Indian government official told the BBC that the meeting is scheduled for the last week of April and will take place at Mr Modi’s official residence in New Delhi.

The BBC understands that Tesla’s plans for starting manufacturing in India will feature in the talks.

Mr Musk's visit comes just as the country begins voting in marathon, six-week-long elections on 19 April.

Mr Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is widely expected to win a third term in power.

A Tesla investment announcement during the election would bolster the business-friendly credentials of Mr Modi, who has courted foreign companies to set up manufacturing operations in India and create jobs.

The two men met last June in New York when the technology multi-billionaire said Mr Modi had been "pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something that we intend to do".

Tesla's plans to move into India comes at a time when the company is battling weakening sales in the US and China.

Deliveries slid sharply in the first three months of this year as Tesla grappled with a fire at its European factory, global shipping disruption and growing competition.

Tesla has cut prices repeatedly in response to increased competition from rivals such as BYD but demand in key markets like China has fallen.

Tesla's shares have lost almost a third of their value since the start of this year.

India overtook the UK in 2022 to become the world's fifth-largest economy, and grew by 8.4% in the December quarter , helped by a surging manufacturing sector.

  • Electric vehicle giant Tesla in talks with RIL for joint venture
  • Discussions on building a manufacturing plant in India
  • The talks have been ongoing for over a month

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing giant Tesla is in the initial stages of talks with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to form a joint venture to build a manufacturing plant in India , reported The Hindu BusinessLine quoting sources.

One of the persons quoted in the report said the talks are in the initial stages and have been “ongoing for over a month”.

However, the person added that the “move shouldn’t be construed as RIL’s entry into the automobile space”, adding that the oil-to-telecom conglomerate’s objective in the joint venture is to build capacities for electric vehicles in India.

Tesla's plans for India entry

Tesla has reportedly earmarked $2 billion for its upcoming ventures in India, with plans to establish a manufacturing plant in either Gujarat or Maharashtra.

While Maharashtra may emerge as the preferred location due to its port facilities, no final decision has been made yet.

The report further hinted that senior officials from Tesla are expected to visit India soon to finalise the plant's location and discuss a potential joint venture with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).

Vera Wang is turning 75 this year. She has no plans to retire.

Vera Wang is turning 75 this year. She has no plans to retire.

  • Vera Wang is turning 75 and plans to continue working.
  • The fashion designer told People that she wants to keep "prodding on" because she still enjoys creating.

Vera Wang says she won't stop working even as she grows older.

"I think maybe a little bit like Warren Buffett or Queen Elizabeth II, I'm just going to keep prodding on because I feel as though I'm able to do my best work more and more," Wang, who is turning 75 in June, told People .

The fashion designer, who started her business at 40 , shared that she still enjoys being creative.

"I'm really trying to respect that in me, that voice in me, that I feel very happy to be creating. That's what it's all about, really," Wang said.

After working as a Vogue editor and an accessories designer at Ralph Lauren, Wang opened a bridal boutique in 1990 at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. Since then, her namesake brand has expanded to include fragrances, jewelry, and homeware.

In May 2021, Wang told CNBC that her work has allowed her "to really have a very full life."

"I think work has been my whole life and it's kept me honestly relevant, fascinated, passionate, frightened, worried and stressed," she said. "I think the day that I don't want to grow will really be the day that I stop."

Wang is part of a list of celebrities and CEOs who have been vocal about their decisions to continue working even as they get older.

Jay Leno , 73, told Page Six in May 2023 that he won't stop working "unless I have a stroke."

Clint Eastwood previously told The Independent in April 2013 that he wants to continue making films for as long as possible.

"That's always everybody's dream. Wouldn't it be great to be 105 and still making films?" he said. Eastwood turned 93 in May 2023. His last project was "Cry Macho" in 2021, which he directed and starred in, per his IMDB page.

Warren Buffett, who turned 93 in August 2023, is the oldest CEO of a Fortune 500 company. During a 2015 Fortune summit, the billionaire investor said that it would be "crazy" for him to leave his job because he still loves what he does.

"I'm tap dancing to work every day. There's nothing more exciting than to get there. It doesn't get better than that," Buffett said.

In May 2023, Ron Olson, a Berkshire Hathaway board member told investors that he doesn't think Greg Abel will take over as CEO of the company anytime soon, per AP .

"Warren is the same way. His energy is amazing. So don't count on Greg taking over tomorrow," Olson said.

More older people are choosing to continue working

About 1 in 5 Americans over 65 were employed in 2023, according to data from a Pew Research Center analysis . This is almost a twofold increase compared to 35 years ago.

Workers who are 65 and older are also more likely to say that they're satisfied with their jobs compared to younger workers, a different Pew Research Center survey from 2023 found.

About one-third of Americans over 40 also say they would continue working even if they have no financial need , per a 2019 TD Ameritrade survey. Some of the top reasons include keeping their mind sharp and avoiding boredom.

I. Roy Cohen, a 101-year-old former CEO , previously told BI's Jane Ridley that he continued working until he was 81.

"The idea of early retirement is horrible to me," he said. "It's stultifying."

He also shared that keeping busy with home improvement projects and even keeping track of his own finances has helped his mind stay agile.
