What is Continuing Education?

continuing education center

“Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field,” says renowned author Brian Tracy. In a world driven by relentless technological advancement and innovation, this statement rings true more than ever. Education is no longer a finite endeavor to be completed in our early years but rather an ongoing journey of growth and adaptation. This is where the concept of continuing education comes into play.

Far from being confined to traditional academic realms, continuing education extends to professional development, personal enrichment, and even nurturing long-held hobbies or interests. It also represents an opportunity for individuals to broaden their horizons, enhance their understanding of the world, and enrich their lives.

Let’s dive deep into continuing education in the following sections.

Continuing education is a broad term referring to any post-secondary learning or training program adults pursue after formal education. These programs help foster a lifelong learning mentality, where education extends beyond the conventional education years.

Continuing education ranges from non-degree career training and degree credit courses to non-credit courses. These courses can be delivered through various modes like in-person classes, online learning platforms, seminars, or workshops. They’re typically designed for non-traditional students and don’t come with a degree.

Why Continuing Education Is Critical for Everyone

As technologies and industries advance, skills that were once in demand can become outdated. The World Economic Forum forecasts that by 2027, half of all jobs will demand new skill sets. In such a dynamic landscape, continuing education equips individuals with the tools to adapt and thrive.

By embracing continuous learning , you demonstrate your commitment to adaptability and growth. You can also explore new areas of interest and gain new skills that could lead to career advancement or transition. You own your upskilling and reskilling journey, and with that mindset, you reduce the risk of becoming obsolete in your field.

Researchers from Harvard Business Review also suggest that highlighting your commitment to continuous learning on your resume after your formal education can impress potential employers. “While taking individual classes may not seem comparable to a four-year degree, showing you’re continuously learning and growing your skills is an attractive quality in an employee.”

In addition to skill acquisition, continuing education can also boost mental health. Research showed that engaging in regular learning activities can stimulate the mind and promote cognitive health agility . Many courses or programs involve group activities and interactions with fellow learners, which helps establish networks and a sense of community and belonging.

Examples of Continuing Education Courses

Degree-credit courses.

Degree-credit courses are a common form of continuing education. These are similar to the traditional courses in a college curriculum, offering credits that can count towards a degree.

Degree-credit courses are particularly beneficial for those individuals who might have paused their education midway and now wish to resume their academic journey. For example, someone who had to discontinue their bachelor’s degree due to personal circumstances can use degree-credit courses to work towards graduation.

Short Courses

Short courses are a flexible and accessible means of continuing education, typically lasting from a day to a few weeks. These courses often focus on teaching a specific skill or knowledge area, providing a quick, efficient way for individuals to improve their skill set or gain new knowledge. Topics can be wide-ranging, from leadership skills to computer programming, and are often available both in-person and online.

On-the-job Training

On-the-job training is training offered by an employer to improve an employee’s skills for their current job. It ranges from teaching new skills to providing updated training due to changes in technology or work process. This form of learning benefits not only the employees but also the employers, as it helps maintain a skilled and competent workforce.

Work-integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning is a dynamic form of continuing education that blends academic learning with practical work experience. This can include internships, cooperative education programs, or apprenticeships. These programs offer an effective way for students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, enhance their skills, and gain valuable industry insights.

In a world where knowledge is power and the rate of change is ever-increasing, continuing education is a cornerstone for personal development and professional growth. Start embracing the opportunities that continuing education presents and invest in your future today.

Build skills. Recertify. Unleash your potential with Continuing Education.

Leverage the power of Cisco Continuing Education Credits and take the next step in your certification journey. With Continuing Education, you can gain new technology skills while maintaining your current certification. It offers flexibility, allowing you to choose your certification path by taking courses, exams, or both. Here’s how it works:

  • Learn more about recertification

How it works

Unleash your potential with Continuing Education

Choose how to recertify with Continuing Education

All requirements for recertification must be completed by your certification expiration date. All certifications are active for 3 years.

The table below outlines the options for recertifying through the Continuing Education Program.

Sorry, no results matched your search criteria(s). Please try again.

To view our full policy and a complete list of recertification options, visit the Recertification page .

CE program policy and rules

View all policies and rules.

  • For validation purposes, manually submitted CE claims MUST be submitted from the Cisco.com account used to complete the eligible activity. See FAQ for more info.
  • Continuing Education activities must be completed prior to certification expiration.
  • Any credits claimed after certifications have expired (for activities completed before expiration) will retroactively apply towards recertification based on the activity completion date.
  • Manually submitted CE claims must be submitted for Continuing Education credit within 1 year (365 days) of completing an eligible activity. Claims cannot be submitted beyond the one-year window.
  • If credits were previously granted for v1.x, then credit CAN be claimed for later completing v2.x, v3.x, etc. of the same training (Ex. PRNE 1.0 and PRNE 2.0).
  • If credits were previously granted for v1.0, then credit CANNOT be claimed for later completing v1.1, v1.2, etc. (Ex. ENCOR 1.0, ENCOR 1.1, ENCOR 1.2).
  • Credits CANNOT be claimed for both Customer and Partner facing versions of the same course (e.g. A-SDA-FASTSTART/P-SDA-FASTSTART, or CUST-SDA-ISE/P-SDA-ISE).
  • Credits will be granted for completing Alpha trainings. Continuing Education credit will not be awarded for submissions of the formally released version of the same course.
  • Earned CE credits are valid for 3 years from the date the activity was completed.
  • Once criteria are met, recertification(s) will be automatically processed based on the date that the last qualifying activity is completed (see the recertification policy web page for the full recertification policy).
  • All revocations are final and cannot be reversed.
  • Candidate forfeits credits and accepts that they cannot be reclaimed/reapplied/re-earned at a later date.
  • Candidate assumes all responsibility for impact (intended or unintended) to certification status.
  • CE credits are automatically applied towards recertification in the order in which they are earned and cannot be held for future use.
  • There is no cap on the number of Continuing Education credits that can be earned from any item category.
  • Cisco reserves the right to reject, deny, or revoke any claims for CE credit that we deem to be inconsistent with the spirit of continuous learning or the values of the Continuing Education Program.

Eligible Continuing Education activities

All requirements for recertification must be completed by your certification expiration date. Credits accumulate until you recertify your highest level of certification, at which point all certifications at that level and below become recertified. Individuals who allow their certification(s) to expire must complete the full examination process again to earn active status. Any ‘Pending’ CE credits at the time of expiration will retroactively apply towards recertification based on the activity completion date once your claim is validated.

Eligible training

Eligible trainings are produced by Cisco or by Learning & Certifications Authorized Learning Partners/Providers. The assigned credit value can range from 4 to 64 credits, depending on the training.

The current list of CE eligible training can be found in the CE Portal Item Catalog (*note, you must have an active associate, specialist, professional, or expert certification to access the CE portal).

Training types include:

  • Instructor-Led/virtual Instructor-Led Trainings (ILT/vILT): in-person or virtual trainings delivered through Cisco or external authorized providers
  • Digital/Self-paced e-learning (ELT), with labs (note: digital training courses labeled 'lite' or "NO LABS" are NOT eligible for CE credits): this includes eligible Cisco U learning paths
  • Derivative Works (custom instructor-led trainings developed by authorized learning partners using partial Cisco content)
  • Workshops & Automation Bootcamps (focused technology specific instructor-led training events)
  • Other trainings pre-approved by the Continuing Education Technical Committee
  • Credits will not be granted for items not included in the catalog.
  • Only authorized deliveries are eligible for CE credits. Good resources for finding an authorized delivery include Cisco Digital Learning , the Cisco Learning Network Store , and the Cisco Learning Locator .

Please be advised that inadequate completion violates the spirit and values of the Continuing Education program. Although a certificate of completion may be provided by your learning platform/provider once a certain threshold is met, to preserve the integrity of Cisco Certifications, the Continuing Education program has the right to enact a higher standard of completion. To avoid any potential sanctions, you are strongly encouraged to review and complete all materials and labs included in an eligible training.

Item authoring

A candidate can earn Continuing Education (CE) credits by participating as an Item Author for the development of Cisco Certification exams. This includes all Associate, Professional, and Expert level tracks. Credits will be granted for each item that is accepted according to the schedule below.

San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) is the adult education division of the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD). As the largest provider of noncredit education in California, SDCCE’s mission is to provide accessible, equitable, and innovative quality education and career training to adult students. SDCCE has offered free career training and classes continuously for more than 100 years.

Founded in 1914 on the principles of inclusion and social justice, SDCCE welcomes every immigrant, refugee and underserved population to fulfill educational goals. At SDCCE, adult students find a fun and positive learning environment for every skill level. Students come from across 50 states and from 159 foreign countries, to learn in more than 70 free career training programs and in thousands of free classes. In addition to a traditional schedule of fall, spring and summer semesters, many programs enroll year-round in an open-entry, open-exit format and offer classes in the evenings, weekends and online allowing students to pursue higher education or career training while maintaining other responsibilities and active lives.

SDCCE’s short-term free career training programs include areas within Business, Accounting/Business Information Worker, Automotive, Child Development, Clothing and Textiles, Computers and Information Technology, Digital Media, Culinary, , HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), Healthcare, Plumbing, Upholstery and Welding. Additional free classes include High School Diploma/Equivalency, English as Second Language, and Emeritus (classes with instruction focused for age 55+). Programs are available at seven campuses in San Diego from the Barrio Logan community in the south, to Miramar in the north. Students also attend classes at over 200 community locations.

SDCCE was one of the first community college continuing education institutions in California to meet the standards for independent accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Noncredit classes are free because SDCCE is part of the California system of higher education.

Transitioning Students to Careers and College

Students attend classes for many reasons: some are returning to education to complete high school diplomas or equivalencies after being away from school for years, and SDCCE helps them succeed and in many cases, transition to continue higher education. Professionals including doctors, lawyers and engineers can be found in computer labs learning advanced software applications, or the latest trends in media technology to help them excel in a current job. Thousands of adults are in hands-on environments learning a new trade or preparing to enter the workforce.

Certificates of completion

SDCCE awards more certificates of completion annually than any other noncredit adult educational institution in the state of California.
