Tips for Creating a Business Plan
Itâs easy to feel overwhelmed at the thought of putting together a business plan. Below, youâll find top tips to help simplify the process as you develop your own plan.Â
- Use a business plan template (you can choose from the variety above), or refer to the previous section to create a standard outline for your plan.
- Modify your outline to reflect the requirements of your specific business. If you use a standard business plan outline, remove sections that arenât relevant to you or arenât necessary to run your business.
- Gather all the information you currently have about your business first, and then use that information to fill out each section in your plan outline.
- Use your resources and conduct additional research to fill in the remaining gaps. (Note: It isnât necessary to fill out your plan in order, but the executive summary needs to be completed last, as it summarizes the key points in your plan.)
- Ensure your plan clearly communicates the relationship between your marketing, sales, and financial objectives.
- Provide details in your plan that illustrate your strategic plan of action, looking forward three to five years.
- Revisit your plan regularly as strategies and objectives evolve.
- What product or service are we offering?
- Who is the product or service for?
- What problem does our product or service offering solve?
- How will we get the product or service to our target customers?
- Why is our product or service better than the alternatives?
- How can we outperform our competitors?
- What is our unique value proposition?
- When will things get done, and who is responsible for doing them?
- If you need to obtain funding, how will you use the funding?
- When are payments due, and when do payments come in?
- What is the ultimate purpose of your business?
- When do you expect to be profitable?

Benefits of Using a Business Plan Template
Creating a business plan can be very time-consuming, especially if you arenât sure where to begin. Finding the right template for your business needs can be beneficial for a variety of reasons.Â
Using a business plan template â instead of creating your plan from scratch â can benefit you in the following ways:
- Enables you to immediately write down your thoughts and ideas in an organized manner
- Provides structure to help outline your plan
- Saves time and valuable resources
- Helps ensure you donât miss essential details
Limitations of a Business Plan Template
A business plan template can be convenient, but it has its drawbacks â especially if you use a template that doesnât fit the specific needs of your business.
Below are some limitations of using a business plan template:
- Each business is unique and needs a business plan that reflects that. A template may not fit your needs.
- A template may restrict collaboration with other team members on different aspects of the planâs development (sales, marketing, and accounting teams).
- Multiple files containing different versions of the plan may be stored in more than one place.
- You still have to manually create charts and graphs to add to the plan to support your strategy.
- Updates to the plan, spreadsheets, and supporting documents have to be made in multiple places (all documents may not update in real time as changes are made).

Drafting the Summary
An executive summary is an extremely important first step in your business. You have to be able to put the basic facts of your business in an elevator pitch-style sentence to grab investorsâ attention and keep their interest. This should communicate your businessâs name, what the products or services youâre selling are and what marketplace youâre entering.
Ask for Help
When drafting the executive summary, you should have a few different options. Enlist a few thought partners to review your executive summary possibilities to determine which one is best.
After you have the executive summary in place, you can work on the company description, which contains more specific information. In the description, youâll need to include your businessâs registered name , your business address and any key employees involved in the business.Â
The business description should also include the structure of your business, such as sole proprietorship , limited liability company (LLC) , partnership or corporation. This is the time to specify how much of an ownership stake everyone has in the company. Finally, include a section that outlines the history of the company and how it has evolved over time.
Wherever you are on the business journey, you return to your goals and assess where you are in meeting your in-progress targets and setting new goals to work toward.
Numbers-based Goals
Goals can cover a variety of sections of your business. Financial and profit goals are a given for when youâre establishing your business, but there are other goals to take into account as well with regard to brand awareness and growth. For example, you might want to hit a certain number of followers across social channels or raise your engagement rates.
Another goal could be to attract new investors or find grants if youâre a nonprofit business. If youâre looking to grow, youâll want to set revenue targets to make that happen as well.
Intangible Goals
Goals unrelated to traceable numbers are important as well. These can include seeing your businessâs advertisement reach the general public or receiving a terrific client review. These goals are important for the direction you take your business and the direction you want it to go in the future.
The business plan should have a section that explains the services or products that youâre offering. This is the part where you can also describe how they fit in the current market or are providing something necessary or entirely new. If you have any patents or trademarks, this is where you can include those too.
If you have any visual aids, they should be included here as well. This would also be a good place to include pricing strategy and explain your materials.
This is the part of the business plan where you can explain your expertise and different approach in greater depth. Show how what youâre offering is vital to the market and fills an important gap.
You can also situate your business in your industry and compare it to other ones and how you have a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Other than financial goals, you want to have a budget and set your planned weekly, monthly and annual spending. There are several different costs to consider, such as operational costs.
Business Operations Costs
Rent for your business is the first big cost to factor into your budget. If your business is remote, the cost that replaces rent will be the software that maintains your virtual operations.
Marketing and sales costs should be next on your list. Devoting money to making sure people know about your business is as important as making sure it functions.
Other Costs
Although you canât anticipate disasters, there are likely to be unanticipated costs that come up at some point in your businessâs existence. Itâs important to factor these possible costs into your financial plans so youâre not caught totally unaware.
Business plans are important for businesses of all sizes so that you can define where your business is and where you want it to go. Growing your business requires a vision, and giving yourself a roadmap in the form of a business plan will set you up for success.
How do I write a simple business plan?
When youâre working on a business plan, make sure you have as much information as possible so that you can simplify it to the most relevant information. A simple business plan still needs all of the parts included in this article, but you can be very clear and direct.
What are some common mistakes in a business plan?
The most common mistakes in a business plan are common writing issues like grammar errors or misspellings. Itâs important to be clear in your sentence structure and proofread your business plan before sending it to any investors or partners.
What basic items should be included in a business plan?
When writing out a business plan, you want to make sure that you cover everything related to your concept for the business, Â an analysis of the industryâincluding potential customers and an overview of the market for your goods or servicesâhow you plan to execute your vision for the business, how you plan to grow the business if it becomes successful and all financial data around the business, including current cash on hand, potential investors and budget plans for the next few years.

Simple Business Plan Template for Startups, Small Businesses & Entrepreneurs
- Written by Dave Lavinsky
Table of Contents
What is a business plan template.
A business plan template is a document that allows you to quickly write a detailed business plan. Among other things, it includes all key business plan sections: an executive summary, company description, industry and market analyses, competitive overview, marketing and operations plans, management team and five year financial projections. Get started writing your business plan today by using our simple business plan template.
Growthinkâs business plan template is the result of 25+ years of research into the business plans that help entrepreneurs and small business owners attract potential investors, raise investment capital, and build successful companies.
The 10 Key Business Plan Template Sections
1. executive summary.
The Executive Summary provides a high level synopsis of your business plan, including your companyâs business concept, mission statement, company description and an overview of your product and service offerings.
The Executive Summary is the most important part of your business plan because if it doesnât excite the reader, they wonât continue reading your plan, and they certainly wonât invest in your company.
Start your executive summary with a clear, concise one-line description of what your company does. This helps your readers instantly understand your business and sets the stage for whatâs to come in your plan.
End this section with an overview of your projected 5-year income statement and if you are seeking capital, the amount of capital you need and how you will use it (e.g., for marketing, staff, etc.).
Importantly, neither your executive summary nor your complete business plan will answer all the questions that readers (particularly investors and lenders) might have about your business. The goal of the executive summary is to excite readers and give them enough information to want to read the rest of your plan. The goal of your full business plan is to excite them enough to meet with you and ideally write you a check or otherwise support your business.

2. Company Overview
This business plan section provides an overview of your business and lets readers know your history.
Start this section with a concise explanation of your business. Then, answer key questions including the following:
- What are the key products and services you offer/will offer.
- Where are you located?
- Why is your business uniquely qualified to succeed? For example, do you have a great management team, the perfect location, great technology, etc.?
- When was your company formed?
- What is your businessâ legal structure (e.g., Corporation, Limited Liability Company (LLC), Sole Proprietorship, Non-Profit Organization, or Not Yet Incorporated)?
- What are your companyâs accomplishments to date? For example, if you are an existing business, what were your sales last year. If you are a new business, accomplishments may include having designed your logo, finding the perfect location, hiring key personnel, etc.
As you can see, your company analysis gives readers a solid history of your company so they understand where youâve been and where youâre going.
3. Industry Analysis
The industry analysis section of your plan describes the market in which your company will be competing, including market research, data on target market segments, and industry trends.
Begin this section with an overview of your industry. State the industry in which you are competing (e.g, the restaurant industry). Detail the current size of the industry and market trends that are affecting it. Importantly, discuss how these trends will positively affect your companyâs success in the future.
In addition, detail your relevant market size. Your relevant market size is the annual revenue that your company could attain if you attained 100% market share.
Detailing your relevant market size helps readers to understand your companyâs potential. For example, while the healthcare industry is a trillion dollar market, your company will not reap a trillion dollars in annual sales. However, if you are a medical device that helps people who snore, by multiplying the number of people who snore by the price of your product, you can calculate a more realistic figure of your companyâs sales potential.
4. Customer Analysis
The customer analysis assesses your key customer segments and their needs. This helps you create products, services and marketing strategies that best resonate with your customers. It also shows readers you are customer-focused, which is key to most companiesâ success.
Start by detailing who your key customers are. For example, are they people who snore? Local residents? HR managers at large companies?
Provide as many demographic (e.g., age, income, gender, location, family size, occupation, etc.) details about your target customers as possible. Likewise, document the psychographic variables you can use to describe your target customers. For example, what are their beliefs? What activities do they engage in?
Next, detail the needs of your target customers as they pertain to your products and services. For example, do they desire speed, reliability, comfort, convenience, low prices, comprehensive customer service, etc. Finally, show how your products and services will meet these needs.
5. Competitive Analysis
Your business plan must identify your direct and indirect competitors, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and show your companyâs competitive advantages.
Direct competitors are companies that fill the same customer need you do with the same or a similar solution. For example, direct competitors of a pizza shop would be other local pizza shops.
Indirect competitors are companies that fill the same customer need you do with a different solution. For example, a supermarket that sells frozen pizzas would be an indirect competitor to a pizza shop.
Finally, detail your competitive advantages, that is the reason(s) your company is positioned to outperform both direct and indirect competitors. Such reasons could include, among other things, having superior products and/or services, or better management and staffing, or a better location, or proprietary Intellectual Property (IP). Detail each of these competitive advantages here so readers understand them.
6. Marketing Plan
Your marketing plan must detail your key products and services, your pricing, your promotions plan and your distribution plan.
With regards to your key products and services, provide details on what they are. Include pictures and supporting information as appropriate.
Next, detail your pricing. Also document whether you will employ a premium, low-cost or competitive pricing strategy.
After this, document your promotions strategy, which details how you will find and secure new customers. For example, will you use online marketing, print ads, television ads, flyers, infomercials, etc. to reach your target customers?
Finally, if applicable, detail your distribution plan. If you are selling directly to your customers, you donât need to include this information. But, if you are reaching customers through distributors and/or partners, detail this strategy so the readers understand it.
7. Operations Plan
Your operations plan must detail 1) the key day-to-day processes that your company performs to serve customers and 2) the key milestones your company expects to accomplish as you grow.
With regards to key day-to-day processes, documenting this ensures that both you and your readers understand what is required to run your business. For instance, for a laundromat, these processes might include, among others:
- Ensuring all machines are operational and the facility is clean when you open, and that the premises are secure, machines are off, and the security system is on before closing.
- Performing daily checks on washing machines and dryers and performing maintenance.
- Keep track of laundry supplies, such as detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets, available for purchase.
The key milestones your company expects to accomplish as you grow keeps you and your company focused and accountable for achieving your desired results.
These milestones could include, among other things:
- Hiring new employees
- Reaching $X in sales
- Securing your Nth customer
- Launching a new location
8. Management Team
This section of your business plan should demonstrate that your company has the required management team and staff to be successful.
Document who your key team members are and why they are qualified to help your company succeed. This gives investors and lenders confidence that if they fund your business, it has a high likelihood of success.
As appropriate, you should also detail any management team gaps (key positions you are missing and expect to hire for in the future) and members of your board.
How to Finish Your Business Plan in 1 Day!
Donât you wish there was a faster, easier way to finish your professional business plan?
With Growthink’s Ultimate Business Plan Template you can finish your plan in just 8 hours or less!
9. Financial Plan
Your financial plan should include your 5-year projected business financials including your pro forma income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements. These statements should clearly illustrate your companyâs revenue streams, sales volume and profitability over the next five years.
Detail key assumptions you made in creating your financial projections in this section and provide a summary of your five-year projected income statement. Your other projections will go in your business planâs appendix.
In addition, if you are seeking funding for your company, detail the amount of funding you need and the key uses of the funds. For example, are you using the funds for product development, building out a location, staffing, marketing, etc.?
10. Appendix
The appendix supports your overall business plan and should include your full financial projections along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you can include details about your intellectual property, customer lists, building designs, etc.
Formatting Your Business Plan
In addition to the 10 key sections mentioned above, a professional business plan should also include a table of contents and a nicely designed cover page.
Itâs important that readers of your plan see you as a professional company. If not, they may not want to invest or otherwise support your business. As such, make sure your plan exudes competence. A nice looking cover page helps convey this message to readers. Then, in the body of your plan, use appropriate spacing, graphs and charts to make your plan look professional and be as easy to read as possible.

- What are your loss projections?
Completing this simple business plan template will provide a road map to completing your business plan and force you to answer key questions about your company which will help in determining its feasibility and likelihood for success.
For example, in choosing the ideal promotions strategy to attract new clients, you will be able to estimate the cost of acquiring new customers. This will allow you to compare that cost to your estimated customer lifetime value and ensure healthy profit margins are possible (or not).
Likewise, a competitive analysis might alert you to stiffer competition than you imagined and prompt you to opt for a new business idea or creatively come up with ways to outmaneuver competitors.
On a similar note, in completing this lean business plan, you might realize the market size isnât big enough to support the large, thriving enterprise youâd like to create. Or perhaps market trends are moving away from the problems your companyâs products and services solve.
Yet another example of the importance of this exercise is that it forces you to really think about your target customers. The better and more narrowly you can define your target customers, the more cost-effectively youâll be able to attract them and the more successful you can be in developing a value proposition that appeals to them.
In any case, a simple business plan template allows you to better understand your venture and what it will take to make it successful.

How Do I Write a Business Plan For a Small Startup?
A startup business plan is nearly identical to writing a business plan for an established business. The main difference between a startup business plan and business plans for an existing company is that established businesses should focus more on discussing past accomplishments and rely on historical data in their financial forecasts. In a startup business plan, the company needs to spend more time validating future forecasts since thereâs no hard data on which to base them and proving that you will be a successful business owner.
A startup business plan template provides a road map to long-term success and business growth. It should include the same 10 key components of all business plans:
- Describe your business, mission and long-term goals in the executive summary.
- Explain the structure of your business, the physical location, and other basic business information in the company overview.
- Research your industry to explain current trends and influential factors for your business through a complete industry analysis.
- Identify the demographics and purchasing habits of your ideal customer in a detailed customer analysis.
- Better understand what your business is up against with a competitive analysis to identify their strengths and weaknesses.
- Develop a marketing plan that will help you reach your ideal customers, drive traffic to your website, and increase conversions.
- Create an operations plan that describes your day-to-day processes and procedures that make your business successful.
- Describe the management team that will be responsible for the success of your business.
- Create a comprehensive financial plan with realistic projections of where your business will be in the next 3-5 years.
- Attach supporting documents, financial statements, etc. in the appendix.

Regardless of their business model, many business owners use their business plans to raise bank loans to grow. The funding request allows them to acquire additional business resources and improve their financial health. New business owners often seek bank loans as well as funding from angel investors and/or friends and family.
Importantly, regardless of the source of funding you desire, a good business plan will stand out to a potential investor by showing compelling reasons why you will achieve financial success. How much does it cost to get a business plan written?

An executive summary should contain the following:
- Introduction.
- Company strengths.
- Explanation of product/service and how it meets a need or solves a problem.
- Conclusion emphasizing the importance/value of the business.
You should try to be concise when you're writing your executive summary since the rest of your business plan will provide more explanation for readers. The point is to draw people in and give them a 1000-foot view of what you are doing. It is generally agreed that the executive summary should make up no more than 5 - 10% of your entire business plan.

Writing a business plan: Your step-by-step guide
Learn how to write a sound business plan that will help set up your business for success.
Learning how to write a sound business plan is an essential first step toward creating a successful business. Simply put, a business plan explains exactly what your product or service is and why people want to purchase it, as well as how you will tackle any environmental and market risks. It can also help you clarify what you want to achieve and plan exactly how you will reach those goals. This, in turn, can help you motivate your team, promote your business, and make key decisions.
A strong business plan also serves as an important communication tool for potential investors and lenders. It will allow you to articulate your current financial status, any sources of revenue, and how you plan to meet revenue projections. Although a business plan isn’t required for all types of credit, it often plays a significant role in SBA loan applications . While no two business plans are alike, every plan should cover the following elements.
Executive summary: Define your business
Your plan’s executive summary is your chance to introduce the business â so it needs to be concise and compelling. The summary should give a brief recap of the history and background of your business in a manner that will make the reader want to learn more about your plan. Sometimes it’s helpful to write this last â after you’ve spent some time contemplating and articulating all the details of your business.
Company summary: Delve into the details
Your business plan should explain what your product or service is and why people and businesses will want to purchase it. Be sure to highlight areas where your product or service has a clear advantage over the competition. Also, include details about pending or established copyrights or trademarks, and present or future plans for research and development (R&D).
Market analysis: Outline your strategy
A market analysis centers on the marketability of your business, who your competitors are and how you fit into the competitive landscape. In the analysis, give detailed information about your business’s industry, including the size of the market, your target market, the market need, and barriers to entry such as supply issues and regulation. Also, include information on any market tests you have conducted and identify your direct and indirect competition.
Marketing plan: Identify your niche
Here, you’ll highlight how you plan to promote your business and generate revenue. Describe in detail what your product or service does and how it will help consumers. Explain how your product is unique from others on the market, and how you will promote your business and generate revenue. Also, provide details about the product life cycle and any intellectual property issues. (Note: Some of this may reiterate or expand upon information elsewhere in your business plan.) You can protect your intellectual property , which can include names, designs and automated process, through trademarks, copyrights, non-disclosure agreements and more.
Management overview: Introduce your leaders
To highlight your human capital, describe how your business will be organized in terms of structure and leadership. Let your reader know who does what and what qualifications they have. Summarize this in your writeup, but consider providing relevant resumes, too.
Financial summary: Develop your financial plan
The financial summary, which includes details about your company’s funding sources, existing debt , any grants , as well as financial analysis, are crucial areas to lay out in detail. Explain the amount of funding your business needs and provide supporting financial data as well as financial projections . Include documents that communicate your business’s current financial status, such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. List your expectations for revenues as well as the cost of your goods, rent, fuel, utilities, salaries, and other expenses.
The final step: Organize it logically
There are many ways you can organize the information mentioned above so you can share it with potential investors and lenders, current and prospective team members and managers, and anyone else who needs to understand your vision.
Do your research and find a business plan format that works for your business. There can be different types of plans for different types of readers, i.e. investors vs. employees, so you can modify your plan depending on your audience.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Make it easy to find key info . Create a cover page and table of contents, so information is easy to find. Also consider using dividers with tabs if you’re printing it out and putting it in a binder.
- Add more details as they emerge . Depending on what you do or sell, you may also want to add a section on Action Plans, which includes information on regulations, legal and compliance issues, safety processes, operational and management plans, an employee handbook, delineations of job descriptions of your staff, and anything else you’ve put on paper (or into a digital document).
- Consider using an Appendix . This is where you can store any supporting documents, including financial and market analyses, logo and branding examples, team resumes, and so on.
Your business plan should reflect changes in your business, the industry or the market. Make changes as necessary to incorporate the changing needs of customers or changing economic conditions in order to keep your plan current. Treating your business plan as a living document — and revising it regularly — can help you stay ahead of the competition and exceed your dreams.

How to Put Together a Business Plan for an Acquisition
Kison Patel is the Founder and CEO of DealRoom, a Chicago-based diligence management software that uses Agile principles to innovate and modernize the finance industry. As a former M&A advisor with over a decade of experience, Kison developed DealRoom after seeing first hand a number of deep-seated, industry-wide structural issues and inefficiencies.
What is Acquisition Planning?
Acquisition planning is when the acquirer identifies and builds relationships with potential targets. More specifically, these targets meet the acquirerâs predetermined, strategic criteria.
â The strategy behind acquisition planning leads to stronger outcomes for both sides of the deal and must, therefore, be the foundation of acquisition plans.
Acquisition plan templates often include a summary of this overarching strategy, criteria for potential targets, a list of potential targets, timelines, risk management and due diligence materials, as well as integration planning materials.
We at DealRoom work with many companies helping them organize their M&A process . So let's start with the overview.
How to create an acquisition plan
One of the principal errors that many M&A practitioners make before making an acquisition is not putting together a business plan. The business plan is an invaluable asset when planning M&A.
It creates a roadmap for what youâre looking for from a business acquisition, as well as providing reassurance to those funding the deal that the rationale behind it is solid and that the decision to acquire is not being made on a whim.
The format of the business plan for an acquisition has a similar structure to that of a business plan for a startup and includes many of the same sections.
When writing either of these documents, you should be asking yourself âdoes what Iâm writing sell the opportunity?â
If the answer to that question is â no ,â you need a rethink, maybe not just for the document, but perhaps for the acquisition itself.
Having said all that, hereâs a typical outline of how a business plan for an acquisition should look:
1. Executive Summary
Even though it comes at the beginning, most how-to guides on business acquisition plans suggest leaving the summary of an acquisition transaction until youâve written everything else.
While this is pretty sound advice, a good rule of thumb is that, if what youâre proposing is compelling enough, you should have a rough draft of the executive summary in mind before even beginning.
A good executive summary should cover a page and sell the opportunity as best as possible, covering its target market, your strategy and summary financials. This is often the only page that investors read before skipping to the financial projections, so make sure itâs strong.
2. Target Description
This section of acquisition plan outlines the business youâre acquiring and why itâs worth what youâre proposing to pay for it. Be as thorough as possible here. If there are weaknesses that you see in the business, introduce them and talk about how you can iron them out and generate value.
At a minimum, include details such as
- headline financials
- a breakdown of the companyâs long-term assets (factory, head office, facilities, stores, etc.) and liabilities
- a SWOT analysis
- corporate structure.
If the company operates in a different segment to your own, show how you can make this work in your favor.
3. Market Overview
A common error when looking at the market overview is to think globally.
Startup investor Peter Thiel refers to this, whimsically noting that someone owning a restaurant could say that theyâre entering a trillion dollar industry, when in reality, their market is a five mile radius around the location of the restaurant.
The more granular the detail here, the better.
- How many customers does the target have, and what kind of customers are they?
- Will you lose their business if the current owner moves on?
- What kind of demand is there for the business outside of its current customer base?
4. Sales and Marketing
This section provides an overview of the sales for each of the targetâs products and services. It should show their pricing strategy and how it compares to your own, and how the company currently conducts its marketing.
For example, if it uses mailing lists to contact customers, is that something you could leverage for your own products and services?
Or perhaps you feel itâs not investing enough in marketing and that you could increase sales by investing in this area. In either case, outline the âquick winsâ that you can exploit here after acquiring the business.
5. Financial History and Projections
When looking for financing for an acquisition, this section is the one which will make or break the deal. Thus, you should be as thorough as possible here, analyzing the targetâs past financial performance.
At a minimum, this should involve three years of financial statements and tax returns but five or more is even better.
The analysis should be comprehensive and honest. It should raise issues that may conflict with your own business - for example, different credit arrangements with customers or a significant difference in capital structure.
Once this has been completed, you can look at projections for the business. These projections should tie in everything youâve written until now; if you plan to increase sales and marketing, this should show in the income statement; if youâre going to use income from the acquired business to pay down debt, this also needs to be accounted for.
There is no right answer for how much your growth projections should be, but it should be justified by the vision that youâve laid out until now.
An interesting, if potentially complex, sub-section to add to the financial analysis are the gains from synergies and losses from cannibalism that you see emerging from the deal.
Synergies might come from cutting some admin or sales staff or merging sales channels (for example, online or direct mail) after the acquisition.
Cannibalism arises when youâve got one of your sales reps selling the new, wider product range, and the customer ends up choosing the targetâs product over your own.
Itâs easy to fall into the proverbial rabbit hole with this section, but itâs still a useful exercise to make you think about where gains (and losses) will be made from the acquisition.
6. Transition Plan
This is typically a brief section that shows how the business will move from the control of the current owners to your own. This is not purely about ownership, however.
It should also detail how current sales relationships, contracts, and intellectual property are dealt with in the transition.
You can minimize the disruptive influence of the acquisition by getting this section right. If there are complex processes at the target company, know who performs them and how this will be dealt with.
Thousands of acquisitions are botched every year by undervaluing seemingly small processes which generate value right across the business.
7. Deal Structure
The topic of deal structure has been covered well elsewhere [link], and these articles can be of assistance when adding this section.
Having put together a failsafe case for acquiring the target company, now you show the financial structure you will use to do so. Â
8. Appendices/Supporting Documents
A major difference between writing a business plan for a startup and one for a business acquisition is the variety of supporting documents attached.
At a minimum, this should include copies of tax returns and licenses, but could go into greater depth and show contracts with large customers, auditorsâ letters and any other legal documents deemed relevant.
Using a merger and acquisition proposal sample can provide helpful guidance when determining which supporting documents to include.

- Business acquisition plan template
While there is room for some variation in sections of each business plan, one thing every plan should have in common is its ability to convince the reader of the merits of the acquisition. Each section should be detailed and compelling.
If youâre not willing to put in the groundwork on a business plan, an investor is entitled to ask, â why should I give a million dollars to someone who canât write 20 pages? â
By spending time on the business plan, and taking a critical perspective, you maximize the chances of your acquisition finding a funder, and simultaneously creating a strategy for the acquisition that primes it for success.

OCT.18, 2023
Buying an existing business is a great way to enter a new market, expand your product or service offerings, or leverage the seller’s existing customer base and brand recognition. A business plan for buying an existing business is a document that outlines your vision, goals, strategies, and financial projections for the business you want to buy. So Organized
Itâs not a personal shopper, but a template will help.
For some, meal planning is what keeps your family afloat (or, rather, not spending a fortune on takeout for dinner every night). Maybe youâve been doing it for years and have perfected your own system. Maybe youâre just dipping your toes into the meal planning pool now that everything feels so dang expensive, including groceries . Or perhaps youâre somewhere in the middle, and you feel like your meal planning system just needs a little organization. Thatâs where free printable meal planning templates come in. They can help you stick to your meal plan, grab the ingredients you need, and use up what you already have in the fridge.
If youâve tried to make your own meal plan template or calendar before, you know it can be super frustrating for anyone whoâs not an Excel whiz or Crafty Cathy. But you really donât have to spend time DIYing a system when there are so many free, printable meal plan templates available online. There are some you can even customize online, if youâd rather type out your plan than write it by hand (some of us have bad hand writing, OK?). Whatever design, layout, and tools you need in a template, thereâs probably one here that can help you out.
A meal plan template that will help you use up your food
The idea of meals being neatly organized by week is great, but in reality, there are usually some leftover ingredients you need to use up in the coming week. This template gives you room to jot those items down so you can meal plan with them in mind, and it also has a section to note anything you need to make ahead if youâre meal prepping or hosting a big get-together.
A printable meal plan you can add to any size planner
The biggest perk of this free printable meal planning template is that you can adjust the size to fit any notebook or planner, so if you have one where you like to keep all your lists, this one will merge right in. Itâs split 50/50 between a meal plan section and a grocery list, and just keeps everything neat and tidy.
A free, printable grocery list with room to write your meal plan
If you want a pretty grocery list where you can also jot down your meals for the week (which can be handy to reference while you shop), this template is perfect. It also breaks down the grocery store sections so you can be sure you have everything you need in dairy before strolling over to produce.
A meal plan template with room for requests
If youâre meal planning for a family and you want to know what theyâll actually eat, this free, printable template has a section just to jot down what theyâre asking for. Thereâs a small grocery list built in, which may not be big enough for everyone, but is plenty if youâre the type who keeps lots of pantry staples in stock.
Food inventory printable templates
Part of meal planning is knowing what on Earth you have, and itâs time-consuming to have to take stock of it when considering every recipe. Keeping a pantry, fridge, and freezer inventory makes meal planning so much easier, and you can take them shopping with you so you know exactly what you have at home. If youâre trying to cut down on your householdâs food waste, this will be a huge help.
Customizable weekly templates on Canva
If youâve never used Canva, youâve got to try it out. They have free templates for so many uses you can customize to your liking and type right into, so your meal plan looks super neat each week. If you want one with more room in the grocery list side, try this option .
A monthly meal planner template
Do you prefer to sit down once a month to think about everything youâre going to eat, so you can be done with it? If thatâs your style, youâll love this free printable monthly meal planner , which is also available on Canva.
A colorful meal plan template
This free printable meal plan template is so cheerful and happy, and includes sections for writing down your meals and your grocery list. The unique thing about this one is the serving tracker, which is a handy addition if youâre trying to eat more veggies or fruits, for example.
A template with the meal plan built in
This monthly calendar template actually is just a ready-made meal plan, with links to all the recipes for each meal included. If you try this layout and like organizing your meals this way, just search online for free calendar printables you can fill out the same way with your own recipes (or, again, Canva has a ton of calendar templates available for free).
A calendar-style meal planning template
For those who prefer a horizontal layout that is a bit more calendar-like or planner-y in nature, this design might work better for you. It too includes room to list out the groceries you need at the bottom, and has space to write down your breakfast, lunch, and dinner plans for each day.
A meal planning template for three squares a day
If you like to plan your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for the week, this one-page template can help keep you on track. You do have to subscribe to the blogâs newsletter to receive it in your inbox, but she also shares tips on using Google Calendar and Google Sheets to meal plan, too.
So, which printable is right for you? Even if none of these is just right, now you know just where to look for the perfect meal planning template.
