Amy Bloom, the Shapiro-Silverberg Professor of Creative Writing, recently launched a new nonfiction writing course housed on the Coursera platform. This is Wesleyan’s 21st free massive, open, online course (MOOC) offered through Coursera .

Launched on Jan. 14, Bloom’s Memoir and Personal Essay: Write About Yourself Specialization  shows participants how to write with confidence. Taught by award-winning essayists and memoirists, this specialization provides tips, prompts, exercises, readings, and challenges that prepare students to write compelling nonfiction.

Bloom, author of two New York Times best-sellers, also is professor of the practice in creative writing and professor of the practice, English. In this Q&A, Bloom discusses the new specialization. (The  Q&A also appears on Coursera .)

Q : What is the Memoir and Personal Essay Specialization?

A : The Memoir and Personal Essay Specialization focuses on these two popular forms of creative writing about the self. One of the wonderful opportunities in this kind of work is that memory and observation are even more important than imagination and the ability to create fictional plot lines. Here, you weave all these skills together to help you put to paper the story you’ve always wanted to share.

When you get feedback, you may see the name of the learner who gave it. If your instructor has anonymous feedback turned on, you’ll see a notice at the top of the feedback for the assignment.

I can’t submit my assignment

If you can’t submit your assignment, make sure that your answers are all over the minimum word limit.

You may not be able to submit your assignment if your answers are too similar to another learner’s submission. Please keep in mind that plagiarism is against the Coursera Honor Code. 

If you see a notification letting you know that your assignment answers are similar to another learner’s submission, you’ll need to update your response before submitting. 

Once you’ve updated your answers with original work, the Submit for review button will appear.

If you need more time to work on your assignment, you can click Save draft and come back to it later.

If you think you shouldn’t be seeing this error, you can click the link below the notification to let us know. You’ll be able to submit your assignment after you edit your answers.

If you aren’t seeing any error messages, but are still not able to submit your assignment, try these troubleshooting steps.

Attempt limits

Some private courses (such as courses in a Degree or MasterTrack program) may have a limit on how many times you can submit a peer-reviewed assignment.

If there's an attempt limit for your assignment, you'll see an 'Attempts' section listed near the top of the page when you open the assignment.

If you meet the attempt limit and need help with your grade, you can reach out to your program support team. You can find your dedicated support email address in the onboarding course for your program.

Save your work as a draft

If you want to start working on an assignment but you don't want to submit it yet, you can save it as a draft. When you save an assignment as a draft:

• You can work on your saved draft from any computer or device if you log in with your Coursera account.
• No one will be able to see or review your work until you submit it.
• You can save a draft as many times as you want before submitting it.

To save an assignment as a draft, click  Save draft when you're working on it.

With the buzz surrounding artificial intelligence and its capabilities — from writing and refusing to write cover letters to giving business advice — there's a growing need for AI experts in the workplace.

To help workers learn and improve their skills in AI, Insider compiled a list of 10 free Coursera classes on the subject. 

These courses offer education to help students find a job in their intended field, or help professionals understand how to implement AI into their businesses. Several are highly rated on the platform, and the ones listed without ratings were created by prominent firms and educational institutions.

What is the metaverse?

Offered by: Meta

Length: 10 hours

Class description: This course covers the metaverse and how it interacts with the world around us. It also addresses the professional and business opportunities that come with the metaverse and is taught by experts from Meta, Facebook's parent company.

"You'll learn about augmented reality, virtual reality, extended reality, NFTs, blockchain, Web3, cryptocurrency," Coursera says.

Once they complete the course, students can collect Meta professional certificates, which can be shared on LinkedIn profiles or résumés.

Class description: In this course, Rutgers professors teach students about blockchain, artificial intelligence , and virtual-reality technologies. The class is designed to help business leaders understand the technologies and implement them in business organizations.

The economics of AI

Artificial intelligence: ethics & societal challenges

Offered by: Lund University

Length: Four weeks

Class description: The class covers the ethical and societal aspects of artificial intelligence over four modules that each equal about one week of part-time studies, according to Coursera.  

Subject matter includes algorithmic bias and surveillance, the influence of AI on democracy, the concept of consciousness, and responsibility and control. 

"The aim of the course is to raise awareness of ethical and societal aspects of AI and to stimulate reflection and discussion upon implications of the use of AI in society," Coursera says.

Introduction to machine learning on AWS

Class description:  The class teaches students the difference between artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. It also covers how to build, train, and deploy machine-learning models. 

"We'll cover services which do the heavy lifting of computer vision, data extraction and analysis, language processing, speech recognition, translation, ML model training, and virtual agents," Coursera says. "You'll think of your current solutions and see where you can improve these solutions using AI, ML, or deep learning."

Trustworthy AI for healthcare management

Offered by: The Polytechnic University of Milan

Length: Three hours

Class description:  This class is specific to healthcare and artificial intelligence. Students will learn how AI systems work, which tasks can be carried out by AI, and common challenges for AI in healthcare. 

The course "gives an introduction to trustworthy artificial intelligence and its application in healthcare," Coursera says, adding it's "aimed at healthcare professionals, patients, and AI practitioners."

AI, empathy & ethics

Offered by: The University of California, Santa Cruz

Length: Four hours

Class description:  This course covers the basics, such as artificial-intelligence definitions and the future of AI.

"This nontechnical course provides an overview of artificial intelligence advancements and the ethical challenges we now face as we navigate the development, implementation, and ubiquitous global use of AI," Coursera says. 

Introduction to embedded machine learning

Length : 17 hours

Class description : This course gives students an overview of machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence that uses data and algorithms to solve problems  and imitate the way humans learn.

The course includes segments on "how to use machine learning to make decisions and predictions in an embedded system" and "the concepts and vocabulary necessary to understand the fundamentals of machine learning," according to Coursera. It also provides students with demonstrations and projects for hands-on experience.

AI, business & the future of work

Length: 11 hours

Class description: This course is designed for those looking to implement AI in business organizations, whether that be public or private, large or small. 

The course includes a combination of short lectures, interviews, and interactive exercises surrounding AI, according to the course description.

Throughout the course, 12 industry professionals will be included to give students a broad overview of topics like the history of AI, potential risks, and best practices.

A certificate is available for purchase by completing the class. You can include the certificate on your LinkedIn profile, or on printed resumes, CVs, or other documents.

AI education for teachers

Offered by: Macquarie University and IBM Australia
