Personal hygiene is the practice of keeping your body clean and healthy. It is a healthy practice that maintains cleanliness and a good personal appearance.

Personal hygiene is a topic that is taught from smaller classes to kids for a very long time. Even now, it has become more important to take care of one’s health and hygiene. Global problems like rising population, pollution, and emission of harmful gases have made it mandatory for everyone to maintain proper health. At the present age, it is easy to fall sick to small problems.

A person’s physical fitness helps them stay energetic and strong. Personal hygiene is not only limited to physical appearances. It is also a state of mental well-being. Health is the general well-being physically, mentally, and emotionally. If a person is positive in all such aspects they have well-maintained personal hygiene. It is a balance between other parts of the mind and body. There are various practices we should follow to be fit. This includes mental well-being, eating of proper diet and nutrition, physical fitness, and cleanliness of oneself and their surroundings.

Impure water has many bacteria and viruses which can make us prone to diseases. Boiling water or adding purifying chemicals helps get rid of the viruses.

Not only should our body be clean, but our environment also should too. We are the result of what surrounds us. If we are brought up in a clean environment our mental and physical state is cleaner. We feel positive too. If we live in a dirty environment however clean we may be, we are prone to diseases and psychologically very ill. It demotivates us and makes us feel unhealthy. Mental health is also very important. Without proper mental health, it is difficult to find motivation and gather the courage to work in life. Physical exercise not only helps us stay fit physically but mentally too.

Doing recreational activities, meditating, socializing with others is also a great way to strengthen mental health. this way we can be fit not only mentally but physically too. This is real personal hygiene.

One of the main reasons for diseases is the lack of proper management of sewage systems. It can house diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and dengue. Improper management of waste materials, open defecation, lack of trees, etc are some problems that prevent us from staying healthy. Proper management of such should be done to prevent any outbreak of diseases. We should conduct afforestation and cleanliness campaigns. The government should also implement policies and plans for a safe place for people to live in. In conclusion, our health is our wealth. Good personal health is very important for personal well-being.

Every day, you come into contact with millions of outside germs and viruses. They can linger on your body, and in some cases, they may make you sick. Personal hygiene practices can help you and the people around you prevent illnesses. They can also help you feel good about your appearance.

Types of personal hygiene

Each person’s idea of personal hygiene differs. These main categories are a useful place to start for building good hygiene habits:

Toilet hygiene

Wash your hands after you use the restroom. Scrub with soap for 20 to 30 seconds, and be sure to clean between your fingers, on the back of your hands, and under your nails. Rinse with warm water, and dry with a clean towel.

Hygiene and Cleanliness Essay

Hygiene is very important to us. Failure to uphold some level of hygiene can have serious health hazards to us and the people around us. This is because health and hygiene go hand in hand like butter and bread. It is highly unlikely therefore that you can be healthy with poor hygiene. Being social creatures, it is up to us to maintain high levels of cleanliness. And it is not a matter of choice, but our responsibility – just like paying taxes.

Basic hygienic behavior is more effective if it is inculcated from childhood. Children who are taught the value of hygiene, grow up to be hygienically sound adults than those who are not taught from their formative years. Hygienic routines can be introduced into kids’ lives and reinforced continuously, until they are registered into their minds and become part of their lifestyles. Parents should however preach what they do, because children are more susceptible to follow what their parents do than what they say. So, parents have to be role models and lead by example.

Hygiene can be grouped into two, personal and environmental hygiene.

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene refers to practices that keep our bodies and our immediate environment clean. Most of these practices are done on a daily basis, because of the tendency of our bodies to get unclean easily. When it comes to our bodies, they should be bathed at least once a day with clean water and detergent soap. We should also brush our teeth twice a day- in the morning to have fresh breadth during the day and in the evening, because bacteria are usually active at night when we are asleep.

The toothbrush should be recommended by dentists, because most of these cheap brushes have hard bristles and they tend to damage gums. Our nails should be clean and well-trimmed. For those who like to keep them long, ensure that they are well kept and clean also.

Our clothes have to be clean all the time. How we choose to store them is also an issue because keeping them in dump places with poor aeration will make them stink. They can be folded well in suitcases or hanged in closets. Furthermore, we should avoid recycling clothes and just wear them once, before we wash them – especially our undies. Our hairs should also be taken care of. Whether we choose to keep them short or long or whichever style we like to make them, they should always be neat and clean.

They should be washed with shampoo regularly, so that they do not stink or loose luster and flexibility. We are also required to shave our bodies, either by waxing or using a blade. In addition, we have to monitor our body odor by using cologne (for men) and perfume (for women).

The next part of personal hygiene is to keep our environment sparkling clean as our bodies. It would be absurd to be extremely smart body wise, but living in a completely dirty house. Our immediate environment is reflected to us. It does not matter how many showers you take per day, if your house is dirty, then you are also dirty period. Houses should be dusted, vacuum cleaned and mopped on a regular basis.

Windows should be washed so that they are crystal clear. Tables, panels and flat surfaces should be wiped regularly and washed. Walls can be repainted and carpets washed once in a while. Our garages and storage rooms are usually the dirtiest, because we tend to dump things in them. They should also be cleaned, arranged nicely and all the extra garbage thrown away to be on the safe side. The houses should be well aerated with open windows to allow fresh air during the day. Air freshener may also be used to keep the house smelling lovely. The lawns should be watered daily and trimmed well.

Once in a while, the houses can be sprayed with insecticides and pesticides to ward off insects and disease causing vectors. Crevices on walls should also be filled to keep insects away. Unbeknownst to most people, the two places that have the highest prevalence of bacteria, fungi and insects are kitchen and bathroom. They are therefore the places that need thorough cleaning. Kitchen surfaces should be spotlessly clean.

The cabinets should be cleaned regularly to keep cockroaches and spiders out and opened once in a while for aeration. Also, the lower cabinets should not be dump. Clogging and leaking sinks should be fixed and garbage bins should be emptied at least once a day to prevent the house from stinking. In the bathroom, the toilet bowl and the bathtub should be cleaned on a daily basis with a detergent. The surfaces should also be wiped to prevent dust build up.

Advantages of Personal Hygiene

One of the benefits of good hygiene is disease prevention. Our bodies come into contact with a lot of germs, especially on our hands. A good example is money, which is one of the dirtiest things on earth. It is imperative that we wash our hands constantly, because most germs get into our bodies through the mouth.

So, by maintaining high levels of hygiene, we are preventing our bodies from coming into contact with disease causing vectors. This will in turn save us a lot of suffering and medical costs. Furthermore, we feel more confident knowing that we look good and smell lovely. Our self-esteem is boosted and our spirits rejuvenated. Cleanliness actually increases our desirability among our peers, which improves our score in the social rankings.

In addition, cleanliness comes with respect. People treat us the way we treat ourselves. So, if we treat ourselves with respect and dignity, then we will be treated the same. It is no wonder that smart people are naturally admired and respected by everyone. Being clean actually gives us a peace of mind. When we are clean, we are not worried about how we smell or look or how people think of us. We become comfortable in the midst of people, which makes us feel good.

Another shocking fact is that sweat and generally uncleanliness keep us fatigued and restless, which reduces our efficiency. After a shower however, we tend to feel rejuvenated and energetic. There is nothing so refreshing like getting into a bed with clean sheets or spending hours in the bathtub with some music playing in the background.

Environmental Cleanliness

This is cleanliness and reclamation of the environment and is done at the community level. Most people do not indulge in this type of exercise, because they assume the responsibilities of keeping the environment clean to the government, after all they pay taxes, don’t they? While this may be true, it is actually prudent that we do not participate in environmental pollution or degradation, just because we pay the government to clean it. Most people are actually ignorant to the effects of pollution and the risks they pose to the future generations. So, instead of acting selfish, we should put their best interests at heart and live in such a way that the environment is preserved for the coming generations.

We can start by using proper disposable methods. We should ensure that all garbage ends up in litter bins and not on the streets. Furthermore, we can recycle items to reduce over production, which is the main reason why there is too much garbage heaps all over the world. This is especially true for plastics, which have poor degradation rate.

We can also join or form organizations, whose sole purpose is to keep the environment clean. Apart from cleaning and reclaiming polluted lands, we can also organize seminars and environmental workshops to educate and sensitize people on the importance of safeguarding the environment.

Advantages of Environmental Cleanliness

The first advantage of keeping our environment clean is that we preserve it for the future generations. It will be unfair for them to inherit a world that is so polluted that it exposes them to a lot of health risks. Secondly, a clean environment is actually good to look at. Nature was created beautiful, it is human activities that destroy it. By preserving the environment, we are also preserving wildlife and marine animals. Land and sea animals are the most affected by pollution, because garbage is quickly getting into their habitats.

Whoever coined the phrase that “cleanliness is next to Godliness” was spot on. Hygiene is very important and should be part and parcel of our lives. Even animals, who cannot be compared to humans in the least bit understand hygiene and take a dip once in a while in rivers and lakes. So, if animals can do it, why not us?

The issue of hygiene should not be debatable. Every sane person is mandated to be clean with the exception of mad men, who are mentally challenged. Unhygienic lifestyle exposes us and the people around us to a lot of risks and we can easily avoid all these risks, if we all took showers daily.

The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed this situation dramatically. Johannes Gutenberg, who had worked as a goldsmith, used his knowledge of metals in the design of the press. He made his type from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, whose durability allowed for the reliable production of high-quality books. By taking regular care of your body you can prevent disease, smell better, and feel cleaner without hours of effort or expensive products. Maintaining Dental Hygiene

Step 1 Brush your teeth...

  • If you are constantly on the go, have a travel toothbrush in your purse or briefcase so you can pop into the bathroom at work.
  • Spend equal time brushing the front, back, and tops of your teeth, especially the molars.

Step 2 Floss at least once a day.

  • Brush from the gum onto the tooth in a stroke that's down and maybe just a slight bit of rolling your hand around but not across your teeth.
  • Using a short piece of floss, get in between your teeth and along the gum line, using your fingers to add pressure.
  • Talk to your orthodontist about ways to floss if you have braces, such as dental threads.
  • Be sure to clean in between your back teeth too, using the floss around all sides of the molars.
  • Mouthwash does not physically remove plaque and food and is not a substitute for flossing.

Step 3 Schedule regular visits to the dentist.

  • Smokers, diabetics, and people with a history of cavities should see the dentist twice a year or more.

Taking Better Showers

Step 1 Bathe...

  • If you don't have access to a shower, a cloth and some water will help remove dirt and irritants from your skin.
  • Showering too frequently can be bad for your skin as well -- once a day is enough.

Step 2 Take short, warm showers instead of long hot showers.

  • Be sure to wash the areas you don't immediately think of -- feet, butt, genitals, and back.
  • Use deodorant or perfume after showers in the morning.

  • When you wash your head, be sure to scrub you scalp lightly with your fingers to remove dead skin cells.
  • Always use conditioner after shampooing to return healthy oils back to your hair.

Keeping your Home Hygienic

Importance of Daily Oral Care Essay

Introduction.

Maintaining oral health is a major issue in the medical field. It is vital in keeping healthy on the whole, along with an imperative effect on the personality of each individual. Keeping good oral health practices may help minimize deadly diseases, and reduce risks of serious illnesses. Oral health involves keeping the mouth, gums, and teeth hygienic, by taking proper care of them and giving them due attention.

How oral health affects overall health

Prevention of gums from cavities and diseases is the chief aspect of good oral health. This can be done by regular cleaning, brushing, and flossing of the teeth on a daily basis, which would help prevent bacterial infections and the emergence of plaque. Plaque is caused by constant bacterial action due to a lack of oral hygiene. This bacteria infects the teeth by forming layers upon layers, appearing in the form of tartar.

Oral bacteria entering the bloodstream

The bacteria from the mouth, if not removed, can enter the bloodstream, and affect overall health by aggravating pre-existing diseases.

The mouth is a Mirror into person’s health

The mouth of a person reflects his personality greatly because it is the main focus while looking at other people during a conversation. It depicts the personal hygiene one possesses and is indicative of the liking for oral hygiene.

Links between oral health and following diseases

Poor oral health has been found linked to many diseases- the relation lies in the fact that the unhygienic conditions of the mouth aggravate any bacterial infections that are present in the body.

Pneumonia is a very common cause of death in elderly nursing home residents. The dental plaque present gives rise to pneumonia-causing bacteria, which get into the respiratory tract through silent aspiration (Jurasek, 2002).

Candidiasis

Candidiasis is a fungal infection that is caused by the yeast Candida Albicans. Denture wearers suffer most from the disease, because of a lack of oral hygiene. It is essential to remove dentures and keep the mouth clean especially after mealtimes (American Dental Association, 2009).

In diabetic patients, oral candidiasis is more prevalent, which can be treated with antifungal medicines. But the most important element is to keep oral hygiene so that such an instance does not initiate. The wounds of diabetic patients take longer to heal, which can affect overall health too.

Heart Disease

The bacteria that affect the gums due to unhygienic conditions of the mouth may enter the bloodstream and also affect the arteries, according to current research. Studies have shown that bacteria infecting the gums can now travel freely throughout the body. The bacteria invade the coronary arteries, causing blockage, and clotting. Another link of oral hygiene to heart disease is the formation of plaque, which causes swelling up of the arteries (American Academy of Periodontology, 2008).

Stroke is also caused due to the same aforementioned reason.

Respiratory Infections

Respiratory infections occur when the bacteria from the gums enter the bloodstream and enter the lungs. Usually, respiratory infections are caused by aspiration or inhaling, but recent studies have shown the bacteria to enter the bloodstream through gum infections. The lower respiratory tract is affected by bacterial invasion.

Bacterial Endocarditis

Bacterial endocarditis is a heart disease in which the valves or inner lining of the heart is affected by germs. Good daily oral hygiene habits may prevent endocarditis, plus, a visit to a dentist every six months, and regular brushing and flossing may also help reduce risks of dental diseases, which may lead to fatal diseases such as the aforementioned (“Infective Endocarditis”, 2009).

Low birth weight and Premature Babies

Premature babies may also result from periodontal disease. When bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream, the body produces prostaglandin to fight the bacteria, which causes muscle contraction, resulting in early labor. The bacterium Pgingivalis infects the placenta, which may affect the growth and development of the fetus. Inflammatory chemicals may also be produced in a pregnant woman’s body.

Common oral health conditions that may affect the elderly

Elderly people may suffer from dry mouth or xerostomia, because of the therapies they are going through. Patients, who are undergoing cancer therapies and the like, develop dry mouth because of the intensity of the medications. They may also be suffering from dry mouth as a result of some other diseases they may be suffering from, like arthritis, bone marrow transplantation, and neurological diseases.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal diseases occur as a result of bacterial infections, which give rise to root surface caries too.

Root Surface Caries

Root surface caries are seen in these patients because of the long periods they are hospitalized, and are not given the medical attention they may need individually.

Oral Ulcerations

Oral ulcers are additionally a cause of bacterial activity in the inner lining of the mouth, which gives rise to painful blisters and swelling; they are termed oral ulcers.

Daily oral hygiene for long-term care residents

Brushing daily.

It is essential for every individual to brush teeth regularly, at least once daily, if not twice, to prevent gum diseases. For long-term care residents, because they are being rendered treatment for the disease and may neglect to keep oral hygiene, it is specifically crucial to pay attention to cleanliness. The hospital conditions may also be such that patients are uncomfortable, and may not pay heed to the importance of daily brushing.

Flossing regularly will help remove bacterial films from teeth.

Mouth Rinsing

Mouth rinsing after meal intake is also essential for keeping the gums free of food particles which may enhance bacterial growth.

Sugar-free Chewing gum

The sugars in food tend to stick to the teeth, giving bacteria the chance to act on them, which gradually cause plaque, and eventually, tartar. Thus sugar-free chewing gum would be a good substitute for regular gum, to prohibit infection.

Denture Care

If dentures are worn, they need to be removed regularly for cleaning, and then restored. Dentures need to be washed regularly and the gums need cleaning so that minimal bacterial growths take place to aggravate the disease that already subsists.

This action keeps the buccal cavity protected from any bacterial infections.

One way to improve and make more effective the brushing of teeth is to modify the toothbrush, so as to reach far-reaching areas while cleaning. Duct tape is applied to the handle of the toothbrush, which causes enlargements in the brush. A larger handle helps grasp the toothbrush, which would help in proper cleaning of the teeth (Spratt, et.al, 1997).

Bicycle Handle

The size of the handle of the toothbrush can be increased easily with some household tricks, like the use of a bicycle handle. Floss is helpful in removing plaque from the teeth, and regular flossing is recommended for oral healthcare, even to normal healthy people.

Electric Brush

Electric toothbrushes have also been designed for ease of cleaning the teeth. The electric toothbrush has an oscillating head, due to which it is also called the rotary brush. It has not been found to cleanse better than the ordinary manual brush, however, it is a good modification for the elderly people who would prefer keeping from the trouble of manual brushing.

Another oral hygiene device that may be used is a disposable applicator that attaches to the fingertip of the individual using it. The finger acts like a handle that controls the applicator while it cleanses the gums and oral cavities of the mouth. The gums can be massaged this way too, along with the teeth and interproximal areas. The shape of the applicator is such that it covers the fingertip smoothly, and there is an adhesive at the base, which ensures a good grip. On the top layer, are small bristles that help in the cleaning process.

Simple steps in performing daily oral care in nursing homes may reduce hospital stays and improve the overall quality of living

Simple steps in brushing teeth may help maintain good oral health, which is imperative to the overall health of residents in nursing care. It is apparent that lack of oral hygiene may affect the overall health of individuals, and may worsen the conditions of those who are already suffering from some disease. Daily brushing and mouth cleaning after mealtimes may help reduce risks of disease and may improve the quality of life of individuals who are seeking treatment in the hospital.

Summary of why oral care is imperative to the overall health of residents

Oral care needs to be maintained if good general health is sought because both are interlinked. Residents need to take special care because of their pre-existing illness and have to ensure that their carelessness in oral hygiene will not cause further complications in the disease.
