Rethinking: “Homework! Oh, Homework!”

“Homework! Oh, Homework! I hate you, you stink

These are the first two lines of my favorite poem , “Homework! Oh, Homework!” by Jack Prelutsky , I can still recite the entire poem from memory. My relationship with homework has changed over the years. As a child I would rather be playing than doing homework. As a teacher, homework was often an extension of the day’s lesson. Now, as a researcher, I see the benefits and limitations of research situated in what research tells us about homework. Rather than asking if homework is “good” or “bad”, the better question may be, “How can homework be improved to be doable and effective?” In this blog, I ask you to suspend your current perceptions of homework and consider the following:
Students’ perception of homework matters.
Research suggests that students’ perceptions of homework quality is important. Essentially, students who believe that their teachers carefully select and prepare appropriate practice that reinforces classroom learning” value homework. This is important because homework behaviors are likely related to achievement. I recommend teachers talk to students about the purpose of homework in ways that are personal and authentic.
Homework can be used to support maintenance and retention.
Homework provides opportunities for distributed practice aimed to support maintenance and retention. In order for this to be effective, homework should be individualized and connect to classroom learning by having students practice skills that they can do independently . As Kathy Ruhl and Charlie Hughes share, “ The best use of homework is to build proficiency in recently acquired skills or to maintain skills previously mastered .”
Students should be able to do homework successfully and independently.
Homework is more efficient when it reviews material from previous lessons (think past few weeks) than when it requires students to solve problems from that day’s lesson. Novice learners are more likely to make mistakes, practice, and reinforce these mistakes if they do not receive immediate feedback. When students practice errors, teacher may have to spend more time reteaching misunderstood concepts and misapplied skills.
Homework can be a valuable learning tool when purposefully planned. In addition to the suggestions above (e.g., discuss the purpose for homework with students, individualize, support maintenance and retention by providing homework on previously learned skills, be sure students can do homework independently), I recommend teachers use self-correcting materials, (e.g., cover-copy-compare ) , work on developing fact fluency (e.g., taped problems ), have students work with solved problems (e.g., interleaved solved-solutions ). And most importantly, continue to evaluate if your current homework system is meeting your purpose and the needs of your students within an MTSS system.

Honestly, it’s hard to argue when your child say they hate homework. But how can parents respond in a way that’s helpful, builds your parent-child bond, and reinforces the idea that your child’s education and learning are hugely important? We asked the experts to weigh in.

Here comes the ugly truth: I’m a nerd, geek, and techie. I’ve always been interested in math, science , and economics. I get high scores in tests, I can teach kids and explain the most complicated equation, and I can spend the whole life speaking about Elon Musk, doing science experiments , or hitting the books without a doubt.
But there’s one thing I want to confess: I hate homework.
Yes, I have been always taught that doing out-of-class activities help to obtain in-depth knowledge, improve skills, and practice theoretical material. I know that homework plays a key role in the educational process , but I don’t like it.

I’m not alone with this problem: A survey shows that over 70% of students dislike homework. The majority of kids don’t like homework and they also dislike their school teachers who assign so many tasks daily.
What do all these children have in common? They hate doing their homework. Today, I’m going to share my thoughts on this issue and I have 5 reasons why I don’t like homework :
1. It takes a lot of time
The educational process is time-consuming. On average, I spend 8 hours on education activities each day in college. After leaving the class, I feel exhausted and tired to do my homework , especially when teachers assign too many tasks or difficult assignments on subjects like philosophy . Not only do learners claim that they have many tasks to do after classes, but also parents and researchers believe the same. As specified in one research, 37% of people say high school grads have too much homework.
It’s no secret that having too much homework requires spending a lot of time on your study workload. To enjoy college life for full, it’s important to keep a study-life balance. However, most nerds like me spend their free time to study hard in order to get a good grade. As a result, we don’t have time to spend with friends, relax, or enjoy our hobbies. It’s the primary reason why I dislike my homework.
2. It discourages learning
Most people believe that nerds are focused on the learning process and they are ready to spend the whole day hitting the books. Although we’re interested in education without a doubt, we are still common young people who may lack motivation, especially if we get too much study workload that leads to stress, depression, and headaches. As one study by Mollie Galloway says: “Although the students in our study were averaging more than three hours of homework per night, most did not find this homework engaging, nor did they feel it enhanced their learning.”
Having too many tasks at home is a proven way to dislike your favorite subject with time. After all, it’s nearly impossible to be involved in the educational process if you feel constantly tired.
3. It destroys creativity
It goes without saying that being a creative person is a plus for all people who want to achieve career success. It helps to find alternative solutions, solve problems fast, and stay ahead of other people. Simply put, creativity is a vital soft skill.
Teachers know it and they do their best to help pupils unleash creativity . For example, the content of your task can be aimed at using imagination, but this means nothing if you’re tired. No matter how hard professors try to teach us creativity, spending too much time on learning after classes kills it, and researchers prove it.
It also happens when students work on assignments that require only knowledge, not creativity. For example, it’s hard to show off your creativity with geography assignments . At the same time, it seems that nerds don’t have to be creative. However, working in a competitive environment, this skill helps computer scientists and programmers stand out from other workers even when working on a market research .
4. It affects my relationships with parents
Living with family, you have to take into consideration their views, thoughts, and beliefs. It’s no secret for my mother and father that I hate homework, but my relatives believe that out-of-class activity helps to develop study habits , teach time management skills, improve knowledge, share tips, get better grades, and obtain a diploma. Although it makes sense, it’s difficult for me to study after classes. It takes time and effort to get my work done, and my relatives become angry which affects our relationships. With love for my family, I respect them and I don’t want to let them down, but it’s difficult for me to keep calm from time to time.
5. It causes headache and stress
From time to time, I feel some health problems after doing my education-related activities. Whether the content of homework is difficult to understand or I can’t submit my finished task on time, I know that my reputation can suffer, so I become nervous. Am I the only one?
Taking a look at educational forums, I’ve mentioned that many learners share their stories about having headaches after studying a subject at home. It makes us irritated and angry, so some pupils seek out support and they wonder whether should homework be banned .
For example, Ellie-Rose Archibald started a petition to Ormiston Academies Trust three years ago. Many undergraduates supported her idea and it got the following results: 96% of learners claimed that homework caused more stress.

- Create a study schedule: Trying to find the best time for effective studying, it’s important to take into account your personality. For example, some people are active in the morning while others find it comfortable to work in the evening. Once you’ve found what works best for you, share your schedule with other peers who may need your recommendation.
- Get assistance: From time to time, you may have a lack of understanding of the subject or task, so it can be a reason why you procrastinate. To do your assignments fast , seek out assistance – collaborate with groupmates, ask family and teachers for help, find a mentor.
- Draw inspiration: Motivation plays a key role in the educational process. If you have something that inspires and motivates you to finish your tasks, you work faster without sacrificing the quality. As a result, you don’t feel exhausted or tired.
Today, there are millions of students around the globe and most of them dislike homework. At the same time, some learners find this out-of-class activity interesting and challenging, but the majority of young people would rather ban it. Anyway, you can hate it or like it, but there’s no option to stop doing your homework, so it’s important to find actionable ways to make the homework process easier and faster .

If educators knew better, they would handle homework differently so that the kids that hate homework and school would learn a few tricks that can help them love homework and not hate school so much. There are many reasons hating homework is widespread and many think “I don’t want to do my homework.”
Here are only some of the things that they can do differently:
Most teachers believe that if they don’t grade it, a kid not doing homework will spend his or her time playing video games.
The truth is many kids don’t do homework anyway, and those that do don’t put in any effort or do it themselves.
Give students reason to want to do the homework by making them feel like they are making a difference in the world. For instance, I hate doing homework because in most cases it feels useless. So, encourage the students to brainstorm ideas on how to improve the environment instead of always asking them to write an assignment on topics like global warming or recycling.
If teachers want to increase students’ long term retention and stop seeing them hate homework, then they should encourage them to practice math problems.
I used to be slow when doing my math homework that each time I sat down to work, it felt like I was trying to ask a squirrel to do for me.

Remember, I said the answers to some questions were personal? Well, let me share how they helped me come up with a routine that helps me do my homework fast even if I hate homework. This routine can help you do the same too!
Let’s dive in!
- Make Yourself a Study Snack After a long day at school, the first thing I usually do when I get home is making myself a little study snack to fuel my brain and get ready to do my homework. But other times, if I’m pretty hungry, I go for something more substantial like a protein smoothie or a sandwich. After I’ve made something to eat, I head over to my study. It’s time to get serious and tackle that homework now.
- Create a Homework Plan The first thing I do is get out of my diary and see what sort of work I have for the week. Sometimes I gotta even remind me to do my homework. I then go over to my homework plan, a simple whiteboard I have in my room that helps me organize my study sessions into tiny tasks that I can handle, one after the other. So, even if you don’t fancy the idea of a snack, I implore you to have a homework plan; it’s the one thing that will show you how to force yourself to do your homework. In your homework plan, write down all of the tasks you have for homework and then order it according to their level of priority before getting started. Doing this will help you focus on the most critical and urgent work.
- Reward Yourself for All the Hard Work Rewarding yourself for all your hard work can affect your level of motivation and help you stay on track throughout your studies, forgetting that you hate doing homework. So, I like writing down the rewards I can give myself. I’ve found that spoiling yourself can prevent you from getting burnt out or feeling stressed and restless from all the work you need to complete.
- Clear Your Desk Do not have too many things on your desk while you are studying. My mom always encourages my sister and me to have the necessities so that we can work better and be able to focus on one task at a time without getting distracted. As a result, I like to have the textbooks I need for that subject, my laptop, and class notes. But something else I recommend having and that I always try to have on my desk these days is a jug of water or just a bottle of water because it will remind me to drink and stay hydrated.
- Set a Timer In the past, I was plodding when it came to doing homework. Not only was that time consuming, but it was tiring too. I could spend almost an hour on a single math problem! But when I started doing my homework using this strategy, I discovered that setting a timer on your phone helps in writing your homework fast. I found that working in 25 to 30-minute blocks and then taking a five to 10-minute break is most effective when it comes to staying focused and working effectively. I tend to use my breaks to either make a cup of tea because I find it calming or drink something that requires me to get up and out of my desk so that I don’t start to get restless.
- Write Down Questions After my short break, I go back to my desk to continue with my homework. As I do that, I like to write down questions as I go. The reason for this is that when I write my questions down, I don’t tend to ruminate on things, and I feel confident that my teacher can answer my questions when we meet. Writing down questions can get you into the habit of being organized.
- Cross Out Your To-Do As You Go Whenever I work through my list of tasks, whether it’s homework or other to Do’s, I like to tick them off or cross them out as I go. I find this useful for increasing my motivation because I can see how far I’m getting. Ticking tasks off my list is also useful for helping me keep track of the workload and see how efficient I’m being.
- Make a New To-Do List for Tomorrow I learned this concept from my psychology teacher; he taught me that as I get closer to winding up my study session, I should use the last few minutes to finish up what I’m doing and make a note of what I still need to complete the following day. I love this approach because it helps you to ease out of your study sessions gradually, and you are also less likely to stop midway through a task just because the timer went off.

Homework Is Stupid and I Hate Everything
How to get your child unstuck, re-glued, and doing their work.

“I can’t do this! I can’t do anything! This is stupid! I’m stupid. Everything is stupid, I quit!”
We’ve all witnessed these moments of utter frustration when kids feel daunted by an assignment, or even just the idea of homework, often even before the work comes out of the backpack. Their unhelpful, pessimistic sixth sense tells them that this really is impossible, then comes the melt down, the shut down, the collapsing into a heap at the kitchen table, the tears, the anger . The mess.
What’s a parent to do?
If you’re like most parents, what you do starts out nicely enough: calmly reassuring, then coaxing, then pleading, then as your child’s resistance mounts, you quickly devolve into exasperation. The tough-love comes out and it’s not too pretty (or effective).
We could launch into an escalating match of dueling catastrophizers (Why can’t he do this? If he can’t even handle 15 minutes of homework, how is he ever going to get through school, get a job—deal with life?! I can’t take it!), but thankfully, there are other choices!
While it seems like your child is being cranky, spoiled or just needs to toughen up—that’s missing the point (and you certainly won’t advance the cause by mentioning it).
Kids in these moments would love things to be different; they don’t want to act or feel this way—but their internal yikes button has been pushed, they are in amygdala overdrive, their brain has detected a threat and they are going to fight or flee, but in no way sit down and work. So caught up in their emotions and quick-assessment of the impossibility of their work, they’re stumped, they feel trapped, and they don’t know how to get out.
Kids have probably never loved homework, so that’s not new, but thanks to our fast-paced, immediate gratification culture, kids today think that learning and everything else that’s mildly challenging and not fun, shouldn’t be. The resilience and perseverance they show when playing videogames or looking for the perfect outfit is unavailable to them when it comes to schoolwork. They think that learning should be like voila! Instant success. No fuss, no muss. And when it’s not, they are convinced that their struggle is undeniable proof of their inadequacy and lack of intelligence — they can’t do it, they’ll never be able to do it, and… they’re stupid.
What’s our job? How do we reset the yikes button?
To begin with, we need reverse our children’s learning about learning. We need to teach kids that a little bit of struggle is a normal and expected part of anyone’s climb on the learning curve. Everyone. Yes, every single person. Very smart people go through the same thing—a lot. In fact. that’s how they get smarter. They just aren’t talking about it so kids don’t witness it, but it happens to "smart kids" too.
Struggle is not a sign of a problem, it’s a sign that new growth is ahead! A sign that mastery is on the other side of this struggle and that means that in a little bit they are going to know even more than they do right now. And when it comes to knowledge—more is more.
If kids knew to expect the struggle, and viewed it as temporary and manageable, and that on the other side of it is the aha moment of success and pride—well, they wouldn’t be so set on avoiding their work fearing that it will gobble them (and their self-esteem ) up; they’d head in knowing that they will emerge triumphant soon (like they always do).
Great. But how do you teach this to a child who is falling apart on the floor?
Empathy , and a plan to do it differently next time. Job number one is to help your child get into the right mindset about work and learning and mistakes, but also creating a plan with your child to get into good work habits and patterns for success. Here are ideas to get you started.
Reflect and Empathize Rather than Convince, Using the Red Pen Edit : Resist the urge to just “fix” or “downplay” your child’s distress. Instead, empathize with your child’s frustration—this doesn’t mean you agree with the reasons they are feeling the way they do. Your empathy will free them up to hear other points of view. Take the “I can’t! ” and edit in some qualifiers: “You’re feeling really frustrated right now .” “This looks really hard right now .” “You’re not feeling like you want to do this right now .” “This feels really overwhelming to you, right now .” “Your mind is telling you right now that this isn’t going to work.” Notice how these edits take away the authority of the negative thinking . “I can’t” sounds like a fact, irrevocable. Putting in the qualifiers shows how these ideas are just temporary—they are one interpretation among many possible alternatives.
Words like this get your child nodding in agreement, and that base of connection will provide the springboard for collaborating on your next move together. Without it, there’s no springboard; there’s just the gravity of your child’s resistance pulling you both down.
Relabel the Bad Guy: Rather than saying things like: “Why are you being so negative (or difficult)? Help your child get distance from their own feelings and don’t confuse your child with their negative exaggerating brain. Instead, help your child step back and say: “Your worry is really trying to take over,” or, “Your worry mind is really trying to make this hard for you; that’s not fair to you.” This also helps your child know that you are working with them, not against them.
Get Specific and Think in Parts: Anxious thinking supersizes small problems and makes them seem monumental, permanent and unchangeable. Help your child narrow down the problem from the “everything” that is wrong, and identify the one thing that’s really feeling daunting. Negative thinking speaks in absolutes. The antidote is using the word some : “Tell me some parts that are hard, some parts that are perhaps easier.” “This feels really big, right now what feels like the hardest part? What’s the part that you think will be the toughest?What part do you think you could tackle first?
Once you break through the tyranny of all or none thinking, some things feel more approachable. The door is open.
Ask Your Child to Time the Process: Children hate homework, but adding an hour of resistance to the 15 minutes it often takes to complete the work is just extending the misery. Challenge your child to see how much more efficiently they can get their work done when there’s minimal grumbling. Be a neutral, agenda-free encourager of your child’s data collection. Have your child time their actual work time vs. start up time each day for a week. When they see how much time they’re wasting on start-up, the result will sell itself. (Don’t ruin the project by saying things like—“see, I told you it would be faster if you didn’t complain.” Best if your child discovers that for himself).
Use Grandma’s Rule As An Incentive: First comes dinner, then you get to eat dessert. Heading into homework time, ask your child what they want to do after their work is done. This will help get the momentum going.
Create a Routine: Rather than fight the homework battle anew each day, discuss a plan with your child for when and where homework will be done every day, so after a few weeks (it takes about three weeks to establish a new routine), your child will know the drill and get with the program, and won’t argue about it (especially if they were involved in the creation of the plan). Have your child write down the schedule and hang it on the fridge, so if there are questions, you don’t have to be the bad guy, just point to the schedule.
Destigmatize Mistakes Some of the homework drama comes from kids being afraid they won’t know how to do something and they don’t want to be caught in that moment. Take the pressure off. Yes, there is often a right or wrong answer in school, but in life, kids need to learn how to try things when they are not exactly sure how they will go. Link mistakes with courage and learning rather than embarrassment and failure. Focus on the process—what they can learn from it—rather than the fact of the mistake. Have your child identify a “fallible hero” or “famous failure” such as Michael Jordan being cut from his high school basketball team, or Thomas Edison requiring 10,000 trials before he made a successful light-bulb. Success is about perseverance; mistakes are the stepping stones.
Don’t Talk about the Future in Negative Ways Keep the—“you need to be able to do this for college!, or, “Every grade counts!”—orientation out of your nightly homework routine. What matters is the “trend” of your child’s work ethic and performance, not every single moment. The best predictor of future success and confidence is current success and confidence. Don’t pull the rug out from under your child by holding the future over her head, instead build confidence by encouraging your child’s efforts now.
Normalize! Show the Seams of How Learning Works Many children believe that intelligence is fixed—you either have it or you don’t. Parents and educators need to actively promote the idea that intelligence is acquired through experience and experience isn’t always neat and tidy. Introduce the idea of a learning curve , let children know that concepts are hard at first , that they have not mastered them yet (not that it is a now or never endeavor). Use examples of your own learning process with new challenges to show the trial and error process of gaining competency. It is not about Presto! It’s about effort.

'I Hate Homework!': 10 Tips For When Your Kids Lose Patience

What do you do when your child says "I don't want to do homework"?
You can't do it for them, but you also have a responsibility to support their education and make sure assignments get done. It might not be possible to turn "I hate homework" into "I love homework", but there are positive ways to turn such problems round.
Often, it's not the homework itself that's the issue, but some underlying cause of unrest. The student may be having problems at school you don't know about. They might need coaching in time management or prioritisation skills. Perhaps they don't have a comfortable space in which to do their homework. Sometimes, kids simply have bad days and lash out with an "I hate school". Getting to the bottom of their real problems is crucial, and we've put together a separate guide on helping kids deal with stress .
Some people (including many students!) would like to see homework banned. To assign homework after school is to rob the student of hours that could be constructively channeled in other ways, such as playing sports or getting involved in community activities, both as important as academic learning. Such ideas would need a radical shake-up of high school systems, with teachers having to either fit more information into school hours, or else drop some of the curriculum. In its favour, working at home encourages a student to plan for themselves and understand the value of self-motivation. For now, teachers will continue to assign homework, so we better find ways to support that learning outside of the classroom.
Here, we discuss 10 methods for helping kids with homework or revision , so they can study and learn effectively.
1. Nurture A Love Of Learning
All young children have an innate sense of curiosity. It may diminish as the years go on, but it's always there. We need to give our children as many opportunities as possible to tap into this sense of exploration so that even homework feels like a means to finding out more about the world. This isn't a quick fix, or something you can turn on in one day - it is an ongoing way for parents to engage with their children. Encourage questions about the things they see around them, explain unfamiliar words, expose them to variety in everything, and never be negative or dismissive. One of the main reasons kids say they hate homework is that almost anything else seems more like fun. If you've brought them up to find wonder and interest in everything, then they may even love their homework.
2. Get Them To Be Teacher
One of the most effective ways of reinforcing learning is to show somebody else how to do it. You can do this by asking your child to pretend to be the teacher, and to give you a lesson. Perhaps they've brought home some geometry to master. See if they can show you how to calculate the area of a circle or the volume of a cylinder. You can even play dumb and pretend you don't already know these things (what, you do remember, right?). You can then work through real examples as set out in the homework. Let them read out the first question to you and, when you struggle to answer, they can show you the working. The you-be-teacher game can give the student a new confidence in their abilities, which they can then use to complete the rest of their work.
3. Carrot Versus Stick
Perhaps the one thing parents do more than any other to goad a student their child into doing homework is to say "you won't get X until you do it". X might be a favorite TV program, a sweet treat they'd been expecting, pocket money, or some other desirable. This might work, some of the time, with some kids. However, it's just as likely to lead to argument and resentment. A more constructive approach is to frame it in a positive light, with rewards for good behavior. "You can have an hour on the iPad once you've finished your homework," for example, or "I've got a bit of a surprise for you once you've got your assignments out of the way". (Though, in the second case, you better actually have a surprise lined up!) The downside to this approach is that it can lead to the expectation of a reward for every task you assign, so use it sparingly.
4. Lower The Barrier To Entry

Do you ever put off doing a task because it all seems quite daunting, but then when you finally do it you discover it wasn't so bad? It's the 'barrier to entry' phenomenon, and it's a common motivational problem with homework. You can help your child lower that barrier to entry by gently and subtly easing them in to the assignment. Find out what the homework is about, then say "Oh wow, I remember doing that at school. I'd love to see how you learn it these days". This could spark a useful conversation which encourages your child to show you more. You might try diving into YouTube and watch a video about the subject, or even find an educational game, which might then motivate them to get started on the assignment proper.
5. Get Them To Plan Their Own Schedule
Older high school kids can receive quite meaty chunks of homework from teachers, especially in the run-up to exams. Some will simply dive into study under their own steam, but others might feel crushed and not know where to begin, believing they have simply too much homework to be able to make a start anywhere. A simple schedule is one way to make things better. Break learning down into easily digested fragments and plan them into time slots over the coming week(s). Invest in a whiteboard or some other way of tracking study time. And be realistic about what you can fit into the hours available. A task that might look like it'll take a couple of hours might stretch longer with toilet breaks, interruptions and unexpected difficulties.
6. Don't Refer To It As Homework

The problem with homework is that it's called homework. We tend to associate related words like 'work', 'task' and 'job' with negative experiences, or at least those parts of life that are not as much fun as 'play'. We need to make homework feel like something your child will want to do, something desirable. So have a think about the language of homework, and try alternatives. 'Home learning' is one, more positive alternative. 'Bonus think time' might be another.
7. Have Regular Conversations About School
The problem might not lie in the homework as such, but in the wider school experience. Perhaps your child is having difficulties in the classroom. They may feel like they're not as smart as their friends, for example. They may have issues with self-esteem, fitting in socially or feel generally overwhelmed. A cry of "I hate doing homework" or even "I hate my teacher" might be related to complex underlying factors. It's important to have regular conversations about school life in general. We all ask our kids how they got on in class, but such generic questions are usually shrugged off with one-word answers. Better to ask specific questions, like "Did Mrs Storey like your essay?" or "What did you cover in history today?". Then use the answers to develop the conversation into other aspects of school life. Taking a regular interest like this can diffuse some of the ill-feeling towards doing school work at home.
8. Gamify Their Education
Why are video games so addictive? The best ones give you frequent micro-rewards. 10 rubies unlock a new badge; collecting dragon eggs advances you up a level. We can take a similar approach to education and particularly homework. You can draw up a chart of levels for them to unlock (and couple them to rewards if you like). So, for example, if they can complete all homework on time for a week, then they unlock a certain reward; do it for a month and they get a special reward. You could also tailor the approach to individual assignments. For a 2,000 word essay, say, you might have tick boxes for for finishing the background reading, for getting a plan of paragraphs worked out, reaching every 500-word mark, and for doing a final read through and spellcheck. These strategies probably won't be sustainable in the long term, it can be quite an effort for parents to plot out the reward system, but can be a short-term help for students who need a bit more motivation.
9. Make Sure They've Got A Suitable Working Environment
It helps, a lot, if homework has its set place in the home, and isn't done ad hoc on the sofa or bed. A dedicated desk in your child's bedroom is the best solution. It gives them a quiet, private space to get homework done, which they can arrange and decorate as they wish. If space is at a premium, then any table will do, so long as it's distant from distractions. Some students might prefer to work in a library to get the peace they need, worth suggesting if they haven't already tried it. A set time for homework is also a good idea. Late afternoon or early evening is often best, giving them chance to rest a bit after school before getting stuck in. We are all guilty of leaving things until the last minute, but working late into the nights or on the last day possible should be avoided where possible.
10. Be Open About The Benefits (And Downsides) Of Homework
One barrier to doing homework is its seeming futility. "I don't want to do my homework. I hate homework. It's just repeating what I did in class. What's to learn?" Students do get a lot of hidden benefits from doing homework. They might not be learning anything they didn't already know, but the reinforcement of ideas they learn in class is priceless. Working beyond the classroom also teaches them skills like self-motivation and structured planning. Take the time to sit down with your child and explain the reasons why homework is given. Study time might detract from play time but it gives a boost to their education that'll see them good for life. Explain the downsides too, that we'd love for them to have more time to explore other areas of life, play sport and see their friends. Getting homework done is a balancing act, and one all children must master.
