I think you pretty much covered the main points. I like how you pointed out how the first paragraph needs to draw the reader into the story. This point is often overlooked by writers, but it’s definitely worth the time and effort.

Since it is important to me personally, I also include if a place is kid-friendly (and how), and about the disability access. Not everyone wants to know this, but many people do.

Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

Holidays for working people are somewhat similar to what they mean for students. In fact, they carry more importance to them than students. Though they are adults, they also yearn for the holidays. Why so? They do not get as many holidays as students do.

Most importantly, the holiday no matter how little it gives them a great chance to relax. More so because they work tirelessly for so many hours a day without a break. Some even work when they get home. This makes their schedule very hectic and gives them little time to rest. A holiday fills the gap for this rest.

How to Write Travel Reviews Properly in English

I bet that before you go to that new restaurant you’ve discovered or before booking an apartment for your next holiday, you read its reviews. For this reason, it’s also useful if you leave your opinion in the relevant forums or platforms. As most of these are international as they are about holidays, it’s much more practical to write your review in English so in today’s article we have included a couple of pieces of advice so that you make a good impression when reviewing things.

Get Down to Business!

As most people skim-read the content, it’s important to put a fitting title. Even if it seems like a great idea when you went to a certain restaurant to celebrate your 30th birthday, other readers are very unlikely to pick your review if you put My 30th Birthday as the title. The titles which include the most important information in a succinct way are better.

For example:

Best pizza in town

Great atmosphere, nice apartment and everything is clean

Good service although the food could do with some improvement

Amazing flat, but only for summer

What Should I Include in a Review?

Next your review must answer the following 5 questions: where?, who?, what?, when? and why? With such information, someone can see if they would have similar problems or if this is less likely. For example, if someone says in a review that a holiday apartment was great but that there were five people in it and it was a bit small for them, this wouldn’t be a problem if two people wanted to rent it.

(Where? In Barcelona. Who? Two Friends and I. When? In August).

(What? We stayed there one weekend; as we already knew the city, we didn’t have to visit the sights).

(Why? As it was summer and we already knew the city, we preferred to look for somewhere to stay near the beach. For those of you wanting to visit the city, it’s probably more practical to look for a more central apartment).

Check Your Reviews with a Fine Tooth Comb

To put the finishing touches to your review, you must reread it and check that the text has no grammar or spelling mistakes. Correct reviews seem more reliable and credible. Moreover, if possible, you should also add photos. As we know full well, a picture is worth a thousand words! If you also include a couple of top-secret tips, your review will be perfect.

I definitely recommend the Parmigiana as a starter. Delicious!

I wouldn’t order any starters. They’re not that special and the main courses are quite big so they’re actually enough.

If you pass by the little church, go in. At the back they have a beautiful garden and not many people know about it.

If you go up the hill behind the house, you’ll have an amazing view. Go up there for sunset!

If you go in winter, make sure you take your hot water bottle. The apartment is nice, but very cold and there is no heating!

This advice will allow you to write some useful reviews, for example, on Airbnb or TripAdvisor. Their readers will thank you for it!

To celebrate the season, we’ve rounded up 15 prompts we’ve written over the years that you can use for writing or discussion in the classroom, among your friends or at your holiday gatherings. You might talk about your beloved family traditions, weigh in on a seasonal debate, write a holiday-themed short story or poem, or reflect on the year behind you and prepare for the one ahead.

Each of these prompts was inspired by a New York Times article, essay or image, and many of them are still open for comment for students 13 or older.

1. What Holiday or Holidays Are You Celebrating This Month?

Hanukkah? Christmas? Kwanzaa? A combination? Something else? Use this prompt to talk or write about your own holiday celebrations — or those that other families have that you wish you could be a part of.

Another option? Use one of these images to play Exquisite Corpse with your friends, family or classmates: One person starts by writing or saying aloud the first line of a story based on the image, and then another person adds on, and so on.

12. What Were the Best and Worst Things About 2022 for You?

The Times’s art and culture critics often end the year by compiling a series of “best of” lists — the best TV shows , movies , art , songs , podcasts , books , comedy , poetry , theater , dance performances and more .

What would be on your “best of the year” list? What would be on your “worst of the year” list? What art or pop culture did you love or loathe? What news, sporting events or viral social media moments did you think were great or terrible? What were the most notable aspects of your personal, family or academic life? Use this prompt to help you make your “best” and “worst” lists and then compare them to those of other students.

13. What Would You Pick as Word of the Year?

Every year the Oxford English Dictionary selects a “word of the year” that is meant “to reflect the ethos, mood or preoccupations” of the previous year. For 2022, the publisher chose “goblin mode.” What do you think of this choice? What is one word or phrase that you think sums up this year? Weigh in on our related prompt .

14. What Was the Best Day of Your Year?

When you look back on the past year, what would you say was your most memorable day? Were you celebrating a big life event or achievement, like getting your license? Or were you doing something more mundane — perhaps talking to a friend on the phone, making a meal for your family or taking a long walk alone? What made that day so special to you?

Even though this prompt was written in 2021, you can still use the article and questions to take some time to appreciate your favorite day of this past year.

15. Do You Make New Year’s Resolutions?

As one year ends and another begins, will you take stock of all that you have (or haven’t) accomplished and make resolutions for the year ahead? Or, like other Gen Zers, according to this article , do you set goals all year round? Use this prompt to talk or write about the various goals or self-improvements you are currently working toward, as well as those you’d like to focus on in the New Year.

Introduction.

Every person has a holiday that they remember fondly. For me, the best holiday experience was when our family visited the Grand Canyon. It was an adventure packed with fun, learning, and unforgettable moments.

The excitement began when we started planning the trip. My parents involved me and my younger brother in deciding the places to see and things to do. We used maps and travel guides, and it felt like we were explorers preparing for a grand journey.

Exploring the Grand Canyon

During our stay, we explored the Grand Canyon in many ways. We hiked along the rim, taking in the stunning views. We also went on a guided tour that taught us about the canyon’s history and geology. It was a great way to learn while having fun.

Rafting Adventure

The highlight of the trip was the rafting adventure on the Colorado River. It was thrilling to navigate the river’s rapids, with the towering canyon walls on either side. The rafting trip was not just exciting but also gave us a different perspective of the canyon.

Evening Under the Stars

Our evenings were spent under the stars, around a campfire. We shared stories, roasted marshmallows, and enjoyed the clear night sky. It was a perfect way to end each day.

Our trip to the Grand Canyon was the best holiday experience for many reasons. It was an opportunity to bond as a family, learn about a fascinating place, and have a great adventure. It was a holiday that left us with beautiful memories and a desire to explore more of the world.
