The personal statement might just be the hardest part of your college application. Mostly this is because it has the least guidance and is the most open-ended. One way to understand what colleges are looking for when they ask you to write an essay is to check out the essays of students who already got in—college essays that actually worked. After all, they must be among the most successful of this weird literary genre.

In this article, I'll go through general guidelines for what makes great college essays great. I've also compiled an enormous list of 100+ actual sample college essays from 11 different schools. Finally, I'll break down two of these published college essay examples and explain why and how they work. With links to 177 full essays and essay excerpts , this article is a great resource for learning how to craft your own personal college admissions essay!

What Excellent College Essays Have in Common

Even though in many ways these sample college essays are very different from one other, they do share some traits you should try to emulate as you write your own essay.

Visible Signs of Planning

Building out from a narrow, concrete focus. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. After this sense-heavy imagery, the essay expands out to make a broader point about the author, and connects this very memorable experience to the author's present situation, state of mind, newfound understanding, or maturity level.

Knowing how to tell a story. Some of the experiences in these essays are one-of-a-kind. But most deal with the stuff of everyday life. What sets them apart is the way the author approaches the topic: analyzing it for drama and humor, for its moving qualities, for what it says about the author's world, and for how it connects to the author's emotional life.

Stellar Execution

A killer first sentence. You've heard it before, and you'll hear it again: you have to suck the reader in, and the best place to do that is the first sentence. Great first sentences are punchy. They are like cliffhangers, setting up an exciting scene or an unusual situation with an unclear conclusion, in order to make the reader want to know more. Don't take my word for it—check out these 22 first sentences from Stanford applicants and tell me you don't want to read the rest of those essays to find out what happens!

A lively, individual voice. Writing is for readers. In this case, your reader is an admissions officer who has read thousands of essays before yours and will read thousands after. Your goal? Don't bore your reader. Use interesting descriptions, stay away from clichés, include your own offbeat observations—anything that makes this essay sounds like you and not like anyone else.

body-frog-cc0

Technical correctness. No spelling mistakes, no grammar weirdness, no syntax issues, no punctuation snafus—each of these sample college essays has been formatted and proofread perfectly. If this kind of exactness is not your strong suit, you're in luck! All colleges advise applicants to have their essays looked over several times by parents, teachers, mentors, and anyone else who can spot a comma splice. Your essay must be your own work, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting help polishing it.

Please note that some of these college essay examples may be responding to prompts that are no longer in use. The current Common App prompts are as follows:

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. 2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? 3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? 4. Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you? 5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. 6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Analyzing Great Common App Essays That Worked

I've picked two essays from the examples collected above to examine in more depth so that you can see exactly what makes a successful college essay work. Full credit for these essays goes to the original authors and the schools that published them.

Example 1: "Breaking Into Cars," by Stephen, Johns Hopkins Class of '19 (Common App Essay, 636 words long)

I had never broken into a car before.

We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van.

Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back.

"Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?"

"Why me?" I thought.

More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window's seal like I'd seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I'd been in this type of situation before. In fact, I'd been born into this type of situation.

My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. "The water's on fire! Clear a hole!" he shouted, tossing me in the lake without warning. While I'm still unconvinced about that particular lesson's practicality, my Dad's overarching message is unequivocally true: much of life is unexpected, and you have to deal with the twists and turns.

Living in my family, days rarely unfolded as planned. A bit overlooked, a little pushed around, I learned to roll with reality, negotiate a quick deal, and give the improbable a try. I don't sweat the small stuff, and I definitely don't expect perfect fairness. So what if our dining room table only has six chairs for seven people? Someone learns the importance of punctuality every night.

But more than punctuality and a special affinity for musical chairs, my family life has taught me to thrive in situations over which I have no power. Growing up, I never controlled my older siblings, but I learned how to thwart their attempts to control me. I forged alliances, and realigned them as necessary. Sometimes, I was the poor, defenseless little brother; sometimes I was the omniscient elder. Different things to different people, as the situation demanded. I learned to adapt.

Back then, these techniques were merely reactions undertaken to ensure my survival. But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: "How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?"

The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to me in Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the answer. I knew why the coat hanger had been handed to me.

Growing up as the middle child in my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in the company of people I did not choose. It's family. It's society. And often, it's chaos. You participate by letting go of the small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and preparedness. My family experience taught me to face a serendipitous world with confidence.

What Makes This Essay Tick?

It's very helpful to take writing apart in order to see just how it accomplishes its objectives. Stephen's essay is very effective. Let's find out why!

An Opening Line That Draws You In

In just eight words, we get: scene-setting (he is standing next to a car about to break in), the idea of crossing a boundary (he is maybe about to do an illegal thing for the first time), and a cliffhanger (we are thinking: is he going to get caught? Is he headed for a life of crime? Is he about to be scared straight?).

Great, Detailed Opening Story

More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window's seal like I'd seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame.

It's the details that really make this small experience come alive. Notice how whenever he can, Stephen uses a more specific, descriptive word in place of a more generic one. The volunteers aren't going to get food or dinner; they're going for "Texas BBQ." The coat hanger comes from "a dumpster." Stephen doesn't just move the coat hanger—he "jiggles" it.

Details also help us visualize the emotions of the people in the scene. The person who hands Stephen the coat hanger isn't just uncomfortable or nervous; he "takes a few steps back"—a description of movement that conveys feelings. Finally, the detail of actual speech makes the scene pop. Instead of writing that the other guy asked him to unlock the van, Stephen has the guy actually say his own words in a way that sounds like a teenager talking.

Turning a Specific Incident Into a Deeper Insight

Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I'd been in this type of situation before. In fact, I'd been born into this type of situation.

Stephen makes the locked car experience a meaningful illustration of how he has learned to be resourceful and ready for anything, and he also makes this turn from the specific to the broad through an elegant play on the two meanings of the word "click."

Using Concrete Examples When Making Abstract Claims

My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally.

"Unpredictability and chaos" are very abstract, not easily visualized concepts. They could also mean any number of things—violence, abandonment, poverty, mental instability. By instantly following up with highly finite and unambiguous illustrations like "family of seven" and "siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing," Stephen grounds the abstraction in something that is easy to picture: a large, noisy family.

Using Small Bits of Humor and Casual Word Choice

My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed.

Obviously, knowing how to clean burning oil is not high on the list of things every 9-year-old needs to know. To emphasize this, Stephen uses sarcasm by bringing up a situation that is clearly over-the-top: "in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed."

The humor also feels relaxed. Part of this is because he introduces it with the colloquial phrase "you know," so it sounds like he is talking to us in person. This approach also diffuses the potential discomfort of the reader with his father's strictness—since he is making jokes about it, clearly he is OK. Notice, though, that this doesn't occur very much in the essay. This helps keep the tone meaningful and serious rather than flippant.

body-oil-spill

An Ending That Stretches the Insight Into the Future

But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: "How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?"

The ending of the essay reveals that Stephen's life has been one long preparation for the future. He has emerged from chaos and his dad's approach to parenting as a person who can thrive in a world that he can't control.

This connection of past experience to current maturity and self-knowledge is a key element in all successful personal essays. Colleges are very much looking for mature, self-aware applicants. These are the qualities of successful college students, who will be able to navigate the independence college classes require and the responsibility and quasi-adulthood of college life.

What Could This Essay Do Even Better?

Even the best essays aren't perfect, and even the world's greatest writers will tell you that writing is never "finished"—just "due." So what would we tweak in this essay if we could?

Replace some of the clichéd language. Stephen uses handy phrases like "twists and turns" and "don't sweat the small stuff" as a kind of shorthand for explaining his relationship to chaos and unpredictability. But using too many of these ready-made expressions runs the risk of clouding out your own voice and replacing it with something expected and boring.

Use another example from recent life. Stephen's first example (breaking into the van in Laredo) is a great illustration of being resourceful in an unexpected situation. But his essay also emphasizes that he "learned to adapt" by being "different things to different people." It would be great to see how this plays out outside his family, either in the situation in Laredo or another context.

Example 2: By Renner Kwittken, Tufts Class of '23 (Common App Essay, 645 words long)

My first dream job was to be a pickle truck driver. I saw it in my favorite book, Richard Scarry's "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go," and for some reason, I was absolutely obsessed with the idea of driving a giant pickle. Much to the discontent of my younger sister, I insisted that my parents read us that book as many nights as possible so we could find goldbug, a small little golden bug, on every page. I would imagine the wonderful life I would have: being a pig driving a giant pickle truck across the country, chasing and finding goldbug. I then moved on to wanting to be a Lego Master. Then an architect. Then a surgeon.

Then I discovered a real goldbug: gold nanoparticles that can reprogram macrophages to assist in killing tumors, produce clear images of them without sacrificing the subject, and heat them to obliteration.

Suddenly the destination of my pickle was clear.

I quickly became enveloped by the world of nanomedicine; I scoured articles about liposomes, polymeric micelles, dendrimers, targeting ligands, and self-assembling nanoparticles, all conquering cancer in some exotic way. Completely absorbed, I set out to find a mentor to dive even deeper into these topics. After several rejections, I was immensely grateful to receive an invitation to work alongside Dr. Sangeeta Ray at Johns Hopkins.

In the lab, Dr. Ray encouraged a great amount of autonomy to design and implement my own procedures. I chose to attack a problem that affects the entire field of nanomedicine: nanoparticles consistently fail to translate from animal studies into clinical trials. Jumping off recent literature, I set out to see if a pre-dose of a common chemotherapeutic could enhance nanoparticle delivery in aggressive prostate cancer, creating three novel constructs based on three different linear polymers, each using fluorescent dye (although no gold, sorry goldbug!). Though using radioactive isotopes like Gallium and Yttrium would have been incredible, as a 17-year-old, I unfortunately wasn't allowed in the same room as these radioactive materials (even though I took a Geiger counter to a pair of shoes and found them to be slightly dangerous).

I hadn't expected my hypothesis to work, as the research project would have ideally been led across two full years. Yet while there are still many optimizations and revisions to be done, I was thrilled to find -- with completely new nanoparticles that may one day mean future trials will use particles with the initials "RK-1" -- thatcyclophosphamide did indeed increase nanoparticle delivery to the tumor in a statistically significant way.

A secondary, unexpected research project was living alone in Baltimore, a new city to me, surrounded by people much older than I. Even with moving frequently between hotels, AirBnB's, and students' apartments, I strangely reveled in the freedom I had to enjoy my surroundings and form new friendships with graduate school students from the lab. We explored The Inner Harbor at night, attended a concert together one weekend, and even got to watch the Orioles lose (to nobody's surprise). Ironically, it's through these new friendships I discovered something unexpected: what I truly love is sharing research. Whether in a presentation or in a casual conversation, making others interested in science is perhaps more exciting to me than the research itself. This solidified a new pursuit to angle my love for writing towards illuminating science in ways people can understand, adding value to a society that can certainly benefit from more scientific literacy.

It seems fitting that my goals are still transforming: in Scarry's book, there is not just one goldbug, there is one on every page. With each new experience, I'm learning that it isn't the goldbug itself, but rather the act of searching for the goldbugs that will encourage, shape, and refine my ever-evolving passions. Regardless of the goldbug I seek -- I know my pickle truck has just begun its journey.

Renner takes a somewhat different approach than Stephen, but their essay is just as detailed and engaging. Let's go through some of the strengths of this essay.

One Clear Governing Metaphor

This essay is ultimately about two things: Renner’s dreams and future career goals, and Renner’s philosophy on goal-setting and achieving one’s dreams.

But instead of listing off all the amazing things they’ve done to pursue their dream of working in nanomedicine, Renner tells a powerful, unique story instead. To set up the narrative, Renner opens the essay by connecting their experiences with goal-setting and dream-chasing all the way back to a memorable childhood experience:

This lighthearted–but relevant!--story about the moment when Renner first developed a passion for a specific career (“finding the goldbug”) provides an anchor point for the rest of the essay. As Renner pivots to describing their current dreams and goals–working in nanomedicine–the metaphor of “finding the goldbug” is reflected in Renner’s experiments, rejections, and new discoveries.

Though Renner tells multiple stories about their quest to “find the goldbug,” or, in other words, pursue their passion, each story is connected by a unifying theme; namely, that as we search and grow over time, our goals will transform…and that’s okay! By the end of the essay, Renner uses the metaphor of “finding the goldbug” to reiterate the relevance of the opening story:

While the earlier parts of the essay convey Renner’s core message by showing, the final, concluding paragraph sums up Renner’s insights by telling. By briefly and clearly stating the relevance of the goldbug metaphor to their own philosophy on goals and dreams, Renner demonstrates their creativity, insight, and eagerness to grow and evolve as the journey continues into college.

body_fixers

An Engaging, Individual Voice

This essay uses many techniques that make Renner sound genuine and make the reader feel like we already know them.

Technique #1: humor. Notice Renner's gentle and relaxed humor that lightly mocks their younger self's grand ambitions (this is different from the more sarcastic kind of humor used by Stephen in the first essay—you could never mistake one writer for the other).

My first dream job was to be a pickle truck driver.

I would imagine the wonderful life I would have: being a pig driving a giant pickle truck across the country, chasing and finding goldbug. I then moved on to wanting to be a Lego Master. Then an architect. Then a surgeon.

Renner gives a great example of how to use humor to your advantage in college essays. You don’t want to come off as too self-deprecating or sarcastic, but telling a lightheartedly humorous story about your younger self that also showcases how you’ve grown and changed over time can set the right tone for your entire essay.

Technique #2: intentional, eye-catching structure. The second technique is the way Renner uses a unique structure to bolster the tone and themes of their essay . The structure of your essay can have a major impact on how your ideas come across…so it’s important to give it just as much thought as the content of your essay!

For instance, Renner does a great job of using one-line paragraphs to create dramatic emphasis and to make clear transitions from one phase of the story to the next:

Suddenly the destination of my pickle car was clear.

Not only does the one-liner above signal that Renner is moving into a new phase of the narrative (their nanoparticle research experiences), it also tells the reader that this is a big moment in Renner’s story. It’s clear that Renner made a major discovery that changed the course of their goal pursuit and dream-chasing. Through structure, Renner conveys excitement and entices the reader to keep pushing forward to the next part of the story.

Technique #3: playing with syntax. The third technique is to use sentences of varying length, syntax, and structure. Most of the essay's written in standard English and uses grammatically correct sentences. However, at key moments, Renner emphasizes that the reader needs to sit up and pay attention by switching to short, colloquial, differently punctuated, and sometimes fragmented sentences.

In the examples above, Renner switches adeptly between long, flowing sentences and quippy, telegraphic ones. At the same time, Renner uses these different sentence lengths intentionally. As they describe their experiences in new places, they use longer sentences to immerse the reader in the sights, smells, and sounds of those experiences. And when it’s time to get a big, key idea across, Renner switches to a short, punchy sentence to stop the reader in their tracks.

The varying syntax and sentence lengths pull the reader into the narrative and set up crucial “aha” moments when it’s most important…which is a surefire way to make any college essay stand out.

body-crying-upset-cc0

Renner's essay is very strong, but there are still a few little things that could be improved.

Connecting the research experiences to the theme of “finding the goldbug.”  The essay begins and ends with Renner’s connection to the idea of “finding the goldbug.” And while this metaphor is deftly tied into the essay’s intro and conclusion, it isn’t entirely clear what Renner’s big findings were during the research experiences that are described in the middle of the essay. It would be great to add a sentence or two stating what Renner’s big takeaways (or “goldbugs”) were from these experiences, which add more cohesion to the essay as a whole.

Give more details about discovering the world of nanomedicine. It makes sense that Renner wants to get into the details of their big research experiences as quickly as possible. After all, these are the details that show Renner’s dedication to nanomedicine! But a smoother transition from the opening pickle car/goldbug story to Renner’s “real goldbug” of nanoparticles would help the reader understand why nanoparticles became Renner’s goldbug. Finding out why Renner is so motivated to study nanomedicine–and perhaps what put them on to this field of study–would help readers fully understand why Renner chose this path in the first place.

4 Essential Tips for Writing Your Own Essay

How can you use this discussion to better your own college essay? Here are some suggestions for ways to use this resource effectively.

#1: Get Help From the Experts

Getting your college applications together takes a lot of work and can be pretty intimidatin g. Essays are even more important than ever now that admissions processes are changing and schools are going test-optional and removing diversity standards thanks to new Supreme Court rulings .  If you want certified expert help that really makes a difference, get started with  PrepScholar’s Essay Editing and Coaching program. Our program can help you put together an incredible essay from idea to completion so that your application stands out from the crowd. We've helped students get into the best colleges in the United States, including Harvard, Stanford, and Yale.  If you're ready to take the next step and boost your odds of getting into your dream school, connect with our experts today .

#2: Read Other Essays to Get Ideas for Your Own

As you go through the essays we've compiled for you above, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Can you explain to yourself (or someone else!) why the opening sentence works well?
  • Look for the essay's detailed personal anecdote. What senses is the author describing? Can you easily picture the scene in your mind's eye?
  • Find the place where this anecdote bridges into a larger insight about the author. How does the essay connect the two? How does the anecdote work as an example of the author's characteristic, trait, or skill?
  • Check out the essay's tone. If it's funny, can you find the places where the humor comes from? If it's sad and moving, can you find the imagery and description of feelings that make you moved? If it's serious, can you see how word choice adds to this tone?

Make a note whenever you find an essay or part of an essay that you think was particularly well-written, and think about what you like about it . Is it funny? Does it help you really get to know the writer? Does it show what makes the writer unique? Once you have your list, keep it next to you while writing your essay to remind yourself to try and use those same techniques in your own essay.

body-gears-cogs-puzzle-cc0

#3: Find Your "A-Ha!" Moment

All of these essays rely on connecting with the reader through a heartfelt, highly descriptive scene from the author's life. It can either be very dramatic (did you survive a plane crash?) or it can be completely mundane (did you finally beat your dad at Scrabble?). Either way, it should be personal and revealing about you, your personality, and the way you are now that you are entering the adult world.

Check out essays by authors like John Jeremiah Sullivan , Leslie Jamison , Hanif Abdurraqib , and Esmé Weijun Wang to get more examples of how to craft a compelling personal narrative.

#4: Start Early, Revise Often

Let me level with you: the best writing isn't writing at all. It's rewriting. And in order to have time to rewrite, you have to start way before the application deadline. My advice is to write your first draft at least two months before your applications are due.

Let it sit for a few days untouched. Then come back to it with fresh eyes and think critically about what you've written. What's extra? What's missing? What is in the wrong place? What doesn't make sense? Don't be afraid to take it apart and rearrange sections. Do this several times over, and your essay will be much better for it!

Writing an essay is an important basic skill that you will need to succeed in high school and college. While essays will vary depending on your teacher and the assignment, most essays will follow the same basic structure. By supporting your thesis with information in your body paragraphs, you can successfully write an essay for any course!

Planning Your Essay

Step 1 Determine the type of essay you need to write.

  • Expository essays uses arguments to investigate and explain a topic.
  • Persuasive essays try to convince the readers to believe or accept your specific point of view
  • Narrative essays tell about a real-life personal experience.
  • Descriptive essays are used to communicate deeper meaning through the use of descriptive words and sensory details.

Step 2 Do preliminary research on your essay’s topic.

  • Look through books or use search engines online to look at the broad topic before narrowing your ideas down into something more concise.

Step 3 Create an arguable thesis statement

  • For example, the statement “Elephants are used to perform in circuses” does not offer an arguable point. Instead, you may try something like “Elephants should not be kept in the circus since they are mistreated.” This allows you to find supporting arguments or for others to argue against it.
  • Keep in mind that some essay writing will not require an argument, such as a narrative essay. Instead, you might focus on a pivotal point in the story as your main claim.

Step 4 Find reliable sources...

  • Talk to your school’s librarian for direction on specific books or databases you could use to find your information.
  • Many schools offer access to online databases like EBSCO or JSTOR where you can find reliable information.
  • Wikipedia is a great starting place for your research, but it can be edited by anyone in the world. Instead, look at the article’s references to find the sites where the information really came from.
  • Use Google Scholar if you want to find peer-reviewed scholarly articles for your sources.
  • Make sure to consider the author’s credibility when reviewing sources. If a source does not include the author’s name, then it might not be a good option.

Step 5 Make an outline...

  • Outlines will vary in size or length depending on how long your essay needs to be. Longer essays will have more body paragraphs to support your arguments.

Starting an Essay

Step 1 Hook the readers with a relevant fact, quote, or question for the first sentence.

  • Make sure your quotes or information are accurate and not an exaggeration of the truth, or else readers will question your validity throughout the rest of your essay.

Step 2 Introduce your thesis in one sentence.

  • For example, “Because global warming is causing the polar ice caps to melt, we need to eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels within the next 5 years.” Or, “Since flavored tobacco appeals mainly to children and teens, it should be illegal for tobacco manufacturers to sell these products.”
  • The thesis is usually the last or second to last sentence in your introduction.

Step 3 Provide a sentence that’s a mini-outline for the topics that your essay covers.

  • Use the main topics of your body paragraphs as an idea of what to include in your mini-outline.

Step 4 Keep the introduction between 4-5 sentences.

Writing the Body Paragraphs

Step 1 Start each paragraph with a topic sentence.

  • Think of your topic sentences as mini-theses so your paragraphs only argue a specific point.

Step 2 Include evidence and quotes from your research and cite your sources.

  • Many high school essays are written in MLA or APA style. Ask your teacher what format they want you to follow if it’s not specified.

Step 3 Provide your own analysis of the evidence you find.

  • Unless you’re writing a personal essay, avoid the use of “I” statements since this could make your essay look less professional.

Step 4 Use transitional phrases between each of your body paragraphs.

  • For example, if your body paragraphs discuss similar points in a different way, you can use phrases like “in the same way,” “similarly,” and “just as” to start other body paragraphs.
  • If you are posing different points, try phrases like “in spite of,” “in contrast,” or “however” to transition.

Concluding Your Essay

Step 1 Restate your thesis and summarize your arguments briefly.

  • For example, if your thesis was, “The cell phone is the most important invention in the past 30 years,” then you may restate the thesis in your conclusion like, “Due to the ability to communicate anywhere in the world and access information easily, the cell phone is a pivotal invention in human history.”
  • If you’re only writing a 1-page paper, restating your main ideas isn’t necessary.

Step 2 Discuss why the subject of your paper is relevant moving forward.

  • For example, if you write an essay discussing the themes of a book, think about how the themes are affecting people’s lives today.

Step 3 End the paragraph with a lasting thought that ties into your introduction.

  • Try to pick the same type of closing sentence as you used as your attention getter.

Step 4 Include a Works...

  • Including a Works Cited page shows that the information you provided isn’t all your own and allows the reader to visit the sources to see the raw information for themselves.
  • Avoid using online citation machines since they may be outdated.

Revising the Paper

Step 1 Determine if your point comes across clearly through your arguments.

  • Have a peer or parent read through your essay to see if they understand what point you’re trying to make.

Step 2 Check the flow of your essay between paragraphs.

  • For example, if your essay discusses the history of an event, make sure your sentences flow in a chronological way in the order the events happened.

Step 3 Rewrite or remove any sections that go off-topic.

  • If you cut parts out of your essay, make sure to reread it to see if it affects the flow of how it reads.

Step 4 Read through your essay for punctuation or spelling errors.

About This Article

Emily Listmann, MA

Writing good essays is an important skill to have in high school, and you can write a good one by planning it out and organizing it well. Before you start, do some research on your topic so you can come up with a strong, specific thesis statement, which is essentially the main argument of your essay. For instance, your thesis might be something like, “Elephants should not be kept in the circus because they are mistreated.” Once you have your thesis, outline the paragraphs for your essay. You should have an introduction that includes your thesis, at least 3 body paragraphs that explain your main points, and a conclusion paragraph. Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph. As you write your main points, make sure to include evidence and quotes from your research to back it up. How to Write a College Essay | A Complete Guide & Examples

The college essay can make or break your application. It’s your chance to provide personal context, communicate your values and qualities, and set yourself apart from other students.

A standout essay has a few key ingredients:

  • A unique, personal topic
  • A compelling, well-structured narrative
  • A clear, creative writing style
  • Evidence of self-reflection and insight

To achieve this, it’s crucial to give yourself enough time for brainstorming, writing, revision, and feedback.

In this comprehensive guide, we walk you through every step in the process of writing a college admissions essay.

Table of contents

Why do you need a standout essay, start organizing early, choose a unique topic, outline your essay, start with a memorable introduction, write like an artist, craft a strong conclusion, revise and receive feedback, frequently asked questions.

While most of your application lists your academic achievements, your college admissions essay is your opportunity to share who you are and why you’d be a good addition to the university.

Your college admissions essay accounts for about 25% of your application’s total weight一and may account for even more with some colleges making the SAT and ACT tests optional. The college admissions essay may be the deciding factor in your application, especially for competitive schools where most applicants have exceptional grades, test scores, and extracurriculars.

What do colleges look for in an essay?

Admissions officers want to understand your background, personality, and values to get a fuller picture of you beyond your test scores and grades. Here’s what colleges look for in an essay :

  • Demonstrated values and qualities
  • Vulnerability and authenticity
  • Self-reflection and insight
  • Creative, clear, and concise writing skills

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

It’s a good idea to start organizing your college application timeline in the summer of your junior year to make your application process easier. This will give you ample time for essay brainstorming, writing, revision, and feedback.

While timelines will vary for each student, aim to spend at least 1–3 weeks brainstorming and writing your first draft and at least 2–4 weeks revising across multiple drafts. Remember to leave enough time for breaks in between each writing and editing stage.

Create an essay tracker sheet

If you’re applying to multiple schools, you will have to juggle writing several essays for each one. We recommend using an essay tracker spreadsheet to help you visualize and organize the following:

  • Deadlines and number of essays needed
  • Prompt overlap, allowing you to write one essay for similar prompts

You can build your own essay tracker using our free Google Sheets template.

College essay tracker template

Ideally, you should start brainstorming college essay topics the summer before your senior year. Keep in mind that it’s easier to write a standout essay with a unique topic.

If you want to write about a common essay topic, such as a sports injury or volunteer work overseas, think carefully about how you can make it unique and personal. You’ll need to demonstrate deep insight and write your story in an original way to differentiate it from similar essays.

What makes a good topic?

  • Meaningful and personal to you
  • Uncommon or has an unusual angle
  • Reveals something different from the rest of your application

Brainstorming questions

You should do a comprehensive brainstorm before choosing your topic. Here are a few questions to get started:

  • What are your top five values? What lived experiences demonstrate these values?
  • What adjectives would your friends and family use to describe you?
  • What challenges or failures have you faced and overcome? What lessons did you learn from them?
  • What makes you different from your classmates?
  • What are some objects that represent your identity, your community, your relationships, your passions, or your goals?
  • Whom do you admire most? Why?
  • What three people have significantly impacted your life? How did they influence you?

How to identify your topic

Here are two strategies for identifying a topic that demonstrates your values:

  • Start with your qualities : First, identify positive qualities about yourself; then, brainstorm stories that demonstrate these qualities.
  • Start with a story : Brainstorm a list of memorable life moments; then, identify a value shown in each story.

After choosing your topic, organize your ideas in an essay outline , which will help keep you focused while writing. Unlike a five-paragraph academic essay, there’s no set structure for a college admissions essay. You can take a more creative approach, using storytelling techniques to shape your essay.

Two common approaches are to structure your essay as a series of vignettes or as a single narrative.

Vignettes structure

The vignette, or montage, structure weaves together several stories united by a common theme. Each story should demonstrate one of your values or qualities and conclude with an insight or future outlook.

This structure gives the admissions officer glimpses into your personality, background, and identity, and shows how your qualities appear in different areas of your life.

Topic: Museum with a “five senses” exhibit of my experiences

  • Introduction: Tour guide introduces my museum and my “Making Sense of My Heritage” exhibit
  • Story: Racial discrimination with my eyes
  • Lesson: Using my writing to document truth
  • Story: Broadway musical interests
  • Lesson: Finding my voice
  • Story: Smells from family dinner table
  • Lesson: Appreciating home and family
  • Story: Washing dishes
  • Lesson: Finding moments of peace in busy schedule
  • Story: Biking with Ava
  • Lesson: Finding pleasure in job well done
  • Conclusion: Tour guide concludes tour, invites guest to come back for “fall College Collection,” featuring my search for identity and learning.

Single story structure

The single story, or narrative, structure uses a chronological narrative to show a student’s character development over time. Some narrative essays detail moments in a relatively brief event, while others narrate a longer journey spanning months or years.

Single story essays are effective if you have overcome a significant challenge or want to demonstrate personal development.

Topic: Sports injury helps me learn to be a better student and person

  • Situation: Football injury
  • Challenge: Friends distant, teachers don’t know how to help, football is gone for me
  • Turning point: Starting to like learning in Ms. Brady’s history class; meeting Christina and her friends
  • My reactions: Reading poetry; finding shared interest in poetry with Christina; spending more time studying and with people different from me
  • Insight: They taught me compassion and opened my eyes to a different lifestyle; even though I still can’t play football, I’m starting a new game

Brainstorm creative insights or story arcs

Regardless of your essay’s structure, try to craft a surprising story arc or original insights, especially if you’re writing about a common topic.

Never exaggerate or fabricate facts about yourself to seem interesting. However, try finding connections in your life that deviate from cliché storylines and lessons.

Admissions officers read thousands of essays each year, and they typically spend only a few minutes reading each one. To get your message across, your introduction , or hook, needs to grab the reader’s attention and compel them to read more..

Avoid starting your introduction with a famous quote, cliché, or reference to the essay itself (“While I sat down to write this essay…”).

While you can sometimes use dialogue or a meaningful quotation from a close family member or friend, make sure it encapsulates your essay’s overall theme.

Find an original, creative way of starting your essay using the following two methods.

Option 1: Start with an intriguing hook

Begin your essay with an unexpected statement to pique the reader’s curiosity and compel them to carefully read your essay. A mysterious introduction disarms the reader’s expectations and introduces questions that can only be answered by reading more.

Option 2: Start with vivid imagery

Illustrate a clear, detailed image to immediately transport your reader into your memory. You can start in the middle of an important scene or describe an object that conveys your essay’s theme.

A college application essay allows you to be creative in your style and tone. As you draft your essay, try to use interesting language to enliven your story and stand out .

Show, don’t tell

“Tell” in writing means to simply state a fact: “I am a basketball player.” “ Show ” in writing means to use details, examples, and vivid imagery to help the reader easily visualize your memory: “My heart races as I set up to shoot一two seconds, one second一and score a three-pointer!”

First, reflect on every detail of a specific image or scene to recall the most memorable aspects.

  • What are the most prominent images?
  • Are there any particular sounds, smells, or tastes associated with this memory?
  • What emotion or physical feeling did you have at that time?

Be vulnerable to create an emotional response

You don’t have to share a huge secret or traumatic story, but you should dig deep to express your honest feelings, thoughts, and experiences to evoke an emotional response. Showing vulnerability demonstrates humility and maturity. However, don’t exaggerate to gain sympathy.

Use appropriate style and tone

Make sure your essay has the right style and tone by following these guidelines:

  • Use a conversational yet respectful tone: less formal than academic writing, but more formal than texting your friends.
  • Prioritize using “I” statements to highlight your perspective.
  • Write within your vocabulary range to maintain an authentic voice.
  • Write concisely, and use the active voice to keep a fast pace.
  • Follow grammar rules (unless you have valid stylistic reasons for breaking them).

You should end your college essay with a deep insight or creative ending to leave the reader with a strong final impression. Your college admissions essay should avoid the following:

  • Summarizing what you already wrote
  • Stating your hope of being accepted to the school
  • Mentioning character traits that should have been illustrated in the essay, such as “I’m a hard worker”

Here are two strategies to craft a strong conclusion.

Option 1: Full circle, sandwich structure

The full circle, or sandwich, structure concludes the essay with an image, idea, or story mentioned in the introduction. This strategy gives the reader a strong sense of closure.

In the example below, the essay concludes by returning to the “museum” metaphor that the writer opened with.

Option 2: Revealing your insight

You can use the conclusion to show the insight you gained as a result of the experiences you’ve described. Revealing your main message at the end creates suspense and keeps the takeaway at the forefront of your reader’s mind.

Revise your essay before submitting it to check its content, style, and grammar. Get feedback from no more than two or three people.

It’s normal to go through several rounds of revision, but take breaks between each editing stage.

Also check out our college essay examples to see what does and doesn’t work in an essay and the kinds of changes you can make to improve yours.

Respect the word count

Most schools specify a word count for each essay , and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit.

Remain under the specified word count limit to show you can write concisely and follow directions. However, don’t write too little, which may imply that you are unwilling or unable to write a thoughtful and developed essay.

Check your content, style, and grammar

  • First, check big-picture issues of message, flow, and clarity.
  • Then, check for style and tone issues.
  • Finally, focus on eliminating grammar and punctuation errors.

Get feedback

Get feedback from 2–3 people who know you well, have good writing skills, and are familiar with college essays.

  • Teachers and guidance counselors can help you check your content, language, and tone.
  • Friends and family can check for authenticity.
  • An essay coach or editor has specialized knowledge of college admissions essays and can give objective expert feedback.

The checklist below helps you make sure your essay ticks all the boxes.

Colleges want to be able to differentiate students who seem similar on paper. In the college application essay , they’re looking for a way to understand each applicant’s unique personality and experiences.

Your college essay accounts for about 25% of your application’s weight. It may be the deciding factor in whether you’re accepted, especially for competitive schools where most applicants have exceptional grades, test scores, and extracurricular track records.

A standout college essay has several key ingredients:

  • A unique, personally meaningful topic
  • A memorable introduction with vivid imagery or an intriguing hook
  • Specific stories and language that show instead of telling
  • Vulnerability that’s authentic but not aimed at soliciting sympathy
  • Clear writing in an appropriate style and tone
  • A conclusion that offers deep insight or a creative ending

While timelines will differ depending on the student, plan on spending at least 1–3 weeks brainstorming and writing the first draft of your college admissions essay , and at least 2–4 weeks revising across multiple drafts. Don’t forget to save enough time for breaks between each writing and editing stage.

You should already begin thinking about your essay the summer before your senior year so that you have plenty of time to try out different topics and get feedback on what works.

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit to write a developed and thoughtful essay.

You should aim to stay under the specified word count limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, don’t write too little, as it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a detailed and insightful narrative about yourself.

If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

Essay on My School for Students and Children

500+ words essay on my school.

Education is an essential part of our lives. We are nothing without knowledge, and education is what separates us from others. The main step to acquiring education is enrolling oneself in a school. School serves as the first learning place for most of the people. Similarly, it is the first spark in receiving an education. In this essay on my school, I will tell you why I love my school and what my school has taught me.

We have all been to school and we have loved each and every moment we have spent over there as those were the building blocks of our lives. A school is a place where students are taught the fundamentals of life, as well as how to grow and survive in life. It instils in us values and principles that serve as the foundation for a child’s development.

My school is my second home where I spend most of my time. Above all, it gives me a platform to do better in life and also builds my personality. I feel blessed to study in one of the most prestigious and esteemed schools in the city. In addition, my school has a lot of assets which makes me feel fortunate to be a part of it. Let us look at the essay on my school written below.

essay on my school

Why I Love My School?

From kindergarten through primary and secondary school, and subsequently, to faculty, school is a place where we always study, grow, and establish ourselves, socialize, be a friend, help others, and love and be loved. School is a buddy that will accompany us from the beginning of our youth till the conclusion of our lives. At school, we share all of our pleasures and sorrows, and we constantly rely on one another. This is made possible through the friendships we share. They assist us in effortlessly overcoming difficulties, sharing moments of enjoyment together, and looking forward to new paths.

My school strikes the perfect balance between modern education and vintage architecture. The vintage buildings of my school never fail to mesmerize me with their glorious beauty. However, their vintage architecture does not mean it is outdated, as it is well-equipped with all the contemporary gadgets. I see my school as a lighthouse of education bestowing knowledge as well as ethical conduct upon us.

Teachers have the power to make or break a school. The teaching staff is regarded as the foundation of any educational society. It is their efforts to help kids learn and understand things that instil good habits and values in their students. While some concepts are simple to grasp, others necessitate the use of a skilled teacher to drive the home the idea with each pupil.

In contrast to other schools, my school does not solely focus on academic performance. In other words, it emphasizes on the overall development of their students. Along with our academics, extra-curricular activities are also organized at our school. This is one of the main reasons why I love my school as it does not measure everyone on the same scale. Our hardworking staff gives time to each child to grow at their own pace which instils confidence in them. My school has all the facilities of a library , computer room, playground, basketball court and more, to ensure we have it all at our disposal.

For me, my school is more than simply an educational institution; it is also my second family, which I established during my childhood. A family of wonderful friends, outstanding teachers, and fond school memories. I adore my school because it is where I learn how to be a good citizen and how to reach my goals. School is the only place where we make friends without judging them. We feel comfortable spending time with those close friends no matter what the situation.

What has My School Taught Me?

If someone asked me what I have learned from my school, I won’t be able to answer it in one sentence. For the lessons are irreplaceable and I can never be thankful enough for them. I learned to share because of my school. The power of sharing and sympathy was taught to me by my school. I learned how to be considerate towards animals and it is also one of the main reasons why I adopted a pet.

school essay writer

School is an excellent place to learn how to be an adult before entering the real world. Those abilities pay dividends whether you choose to be the bigger person in an argument or simply complete your domestic tasks. When you open your mind to new ideas, you gain a lot of influence in society. Picking up unexpected hobbies on your own will teach you more about what you like to do than simply completing things for a grade.

A school is a place where I developed my artistic skills which were further enhanced by my teachers. Subsequently, it led me to participate in inter-school completions through which I earned various awards. Most importantly, my school taught me how to face failures with grace and never give up on my ambitions, no matter what happens.

Schools also offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as Scouts and Guides, sports, N.C.C., skating, school band, acting, dancing, singing, and so on. Our principal also used to give us a short lecture every day for about 10 minutes about etiquette, character development, moral education, respecting others, and gaining excellent values. As a result, I can claim that what I am today is solely due to my school, which is the best institution in my opinion.

Teamwork is an important ability that schools teach. Schools are frequently the first places where youngsters have the opportunity to collaborate with children who are different from them. Collaboration is essential for the team and individual success. Students are taught that the success of a team depends on each individual component functioning together.

To sum it up, studying in one of the respected schools has helped me a lot personally. I will always be indebted to my school for shaping my personality and teaching me invaluable lessons. It has given me friends for life and teachers that I will always look up to. I aspire to carry on the values imbibed by my school to do well in life and make it proud.

Here is the list of Top Schools in India! Does Your School Tops the List?

This website is popular among students for its user-friendly interface and professional academic writing support to students. With years of industry expertise, WriteMyPapers has established a reputation for meeting deadlines and providing good-quality services. The essay writing platform connects students with expert writers specializing in various disciplines. It also offers personalized assistance with various writing tasks.

Students may quickly navigate the website, submit requests, and connect directly with authors. Customers can easily fulfill papers with guaranteed timely delivery. Overall, this service simplifies the process of seeking academic support. It's a great resource for students.

Pros And Cons

These are the benefits of using WriteMyPapers.org:

  • It's easy to use the website due to its convenient and simple design. The website has a simple interface with everything you need right where you can see it.
  • The website offers a discount for first-time users. You can benefit from a nice 10% off on your first order.
  • The platform has over 11 years of experience. This means that the service adapts to users' needs and provides quality writing.
  • The website works only with professionals. Moreover, they make sure to test their knowledge since a degree doesn’t always mean that a person has sufficient knowledge.
  • Numerous options to choose from. Even if you have quite a rare writing task, you can still find help on this website. For instance, you can choose a term paper, essay, or anything else.
  • The convenient calculator immediately informs you about the cost. You can use this calculator without placing an order to understand the price it’ll cost you to use these services.

There are a few drawbacks to using this platform:

  • The support team may not answer the same moment you asked for their help. Still, they make sure to answer users as soon as possible. Be patient.
  • Higher price if you order a paper with a short deadline. That is why it’s important not to delay your order if you know that you’ll be busy.

Our Experience

Overall, we believe that the WriteMyPapers service is worth your time. We've made a request for a smaller essay with one week as a deadline. As a result, we received a well-written and nicely structured essay on the relevant topic. We didn't experience any delays.

EssayNow.net – For Students with Less Than $10 in Pockets

school essay writer

EssayNow.net is another great solution for students who struggle to write an academic paper and lack time. The first impression is positive because it's easy to navigate the platform, and it has a rather modern design. Now, let's get into the details of why you should try this service.

The academic writing service works similarly to the previous service. The users must choose the type of writing, the academic level (difficulty), and the subject. Then, they can add additional information and requests to their order. Once everything is set, the request goes to a professional writer. Typically, clients praise EssayNow for high-quality papers and a personalized approach.

Like our first example, EssayNow also has benefits and drawbacks. Overall, the website is pretty convenient and provides easy access to numerous services. The number of services is what attracts students in the first place. However, there are other pros, too.

These are the pros:

  • The site has affordable prices and discounts. Users get access to cheap prices through discounts and a beneficial Loyalty Program.
  • The website has a user-friendly interface. It's easy to find all the information you need and seek, thanks to a nice web design.
  • It provides refunds if users aren’t satisfied with the quality. Customers can ask for refunds at any stage of the process if the writer doesn’t meet the requirements. However, users must carefully express their requests and requirements in the first place.
  • Total anonymity. Personal data is protected with advanced encryption software, ensuring 100% confidentiality.
  • Original content guarantee. All papers are plagiarism-free because this is the industry's standard. Users shouldn't worry about professors spotting plagiarized paragraphs or sentences.
  • The service formats citations in several formatting styles. It supports all citation styles, like MLA, APA, Harvard, Chicago/Turabian.
  • Clients get their work on time. Papers are guaranteed to be delivered before the specified deadline or even earlier.

Still, this paper writing service has a few disadvantages. Among the cons is:

  • Some clients share that the writers may not answer them sometimes. This situation may happen because authors are busy with tasks. In this case, it's best to contact the support so they can answer questions.

Overall, your experience will depend on a few factors, including how much information you give to the author.

Overall, we've noticed that it's crucial to be specific about your requests when submitting an order. We made sure to indicate specific sources that the author must use for our essay. As previously, we've made a request for a similar essay with the same deadline. As a result, we received a quality paper.

DarwinEssay.net – For Long and Tiring Writing Assignments

school essay writer

This service is another reliable and legal paper writing platform where students can fix their problems regarding not being able to hand in an academic paper on time. The website has all the necessary information for first acquaintance. There you’ll find a price calculator, the number of available authors and their short biographies, the number of completed orders, FAQs, and freebie offers.

The platform is similar to the previous two examples because it has a similar calculator/order placement form. Overall, it's appreciated when this form is available because users can easily calculate how much they should pay so that they can plan their budgets.

Additionally, it's worth mentioning that DarwinEssay.net has a rather convenient way of choosing a type of work. For example, when you click on the "Essay" button, you’ll be able to type in the first letters of your essay type and find it on the list. Thus, you don't have to scroll down to find the necessary type of service.

The company has affordable prices that are still quite competitive in the industry. In addition, the essay writing platform offers a discount of up to 15% for loyal users. Such a feature could be beneficial for students who require academic help regularly.

Let's start with the positive aspects:

  • The website offers a wide range of academic writing services to meet different needs and requirements.
  • Many users praise the quality of the papers provided by the service. This feature indicates a high level of expertise among its writers.
  • The costs are competitive, which makes the service accessible to students. Additionally, it may be useful for students who need such help all the time because of the 15% discount.
  • Customers appreciate the convenience of being able to place orders online at any time, which can help with tight deadlines.
  • The platform employs qualified writers with expertise in all subject areas, which ensures that assignments are completed to a high standard.

Naturally, the service has a few disadvantages. Among them:

  • The cost of your order can become much higher if you need a paper in 3 hours. It’s better to order in advance.
  • Several users asked for paper improvement. But that happened only because their teachers changed or broadened requirements.

Overall, the service is quite promising, so you should consider using DarwinEssay.

The service writer that we chose managed to create a well-structured essay on time. We didn't receive it earlier, but it was a timely delivery even though it was a tight deadline. Moreover, the essay didn’t have mistakes or typos, which means they surely double-check papers before submitting them.

1WS.com – For Tight Budgets

school essay writer

The full name of the service is 1st Writing Service, which speaks volumes about the website's desire to provide the highest quality papers. The first impression is quite good as the site has a convenient navigation system and a beautiful design. Now, let's see if it provides quality services.

Just like most reviewed platforms from this article, 1WS.com has a convenient calculator right where you can immediately notice it – at the top of the main page. The calculator is simple to use, and you can better understand how much it’ll cost to use the services of this essay writing website.

The company provides a wide range of papers that meet the needs of students from different universities. It has a team of skilled professionals who help clients with their academic and professional goals. Moreover, this service keeps personal information private and doesn't share it with its writers.

The paper writing service also offers 24/7 support to address clients' writing needs as fast as possible.

1WS ensures its work is original by conducting multiple plagiarism checks. Additionally, the service is committed to meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work according to the date that you specify.

Let's start with the positive aspects of this service:

  • The platform has mainly positive reviews on several reputable third-party sites. This means that the majority of students are satisfied with the services they get.
  • The website has a modern design with simple navigation. The website is modern-looking and has one of the best web designs among the seven services that we've reviewed in this article.
  • Affordable prices. Overall, all the services that we review have affordable prices, but it's never a bad idea to mention this fact again.
  • The list of available paper types is long. Even school students can benefit from the website. Still, if your task isn’t listed, you can contact the support team, and they’ll find a person for your order.

Still, the platform has a few drawbacks:

  • The customer support team can be quite busy sometimes. Still, they try to reach out to anyone who needs their help.
  • It isn’t clear how long this service has been in the industry if this fact is important to you. Still, it doesn’t influence the quality.

To sum up, the benefits make it worth giving this academic writing service a try.

We placed an order and received a perfect essay on Philosophy two days before the deadline. 1WS considered each detail and notified us at every stage. Thus, we believe this platform provides students with exactly what they request.

Apapers.net – For Complex Assignments

school essay writer

Apapers.net has been a leader in helping students with their academic papers since 2009. The company has served thousands of customers, who keep coming back for more (according to the reviews). This company is often a go-to choice for students aiming for good grades for their writing tasks.

Every writer at APapers holds a degree in their field. The company promises that all employees undergo test assignments to verify the quality of their writing. This commitment to professionalism and customer satisfaction means that the company worries about its reputation and wants to provide the best papers to clients.

Additionally, the company offers numerous standard services, including editing and proofreading. The writers can format citations in the most common styles like APA, Chicago, Harvard, or MLA style. The company creates only unique papers, and no AI is involved.

The service has quite a few significant advantages:

  • It's anonymous and private. This ensures that your identity is kept confidential.
  • The site provides free revision options. This means you can request three revisions for your paper at no extra cost.
  • Only real authors create academic papers, no AI. This implies that all content is created by professional writers with master's degrees.
  • The writers guarantee the absence of plagiarism. You can trust that all content is original and plagiarism-free.
  • The website doesn’t have hidden charges. This ensures transparency in pricing without any unexpected fees.
  • Customer support 24/7. Assistance is available around the clock for any inquiries or issues.
  • You can expect a money-back guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied, you're entitled to a refund.
  • There is an urgent paper delivery option. Papers can be delivered promptly for urgent needs.
  • Free bibliography. Bibliographies are included at no extra cost, aiding your research and citations.
  • A discount for new clients. It's a nice 5% discount.

As for the disadvantages, they are as follows:

  • A smaller discount. It may be strange to expect more, but some of the reviewed services provide a 10% discount.
  • Customer support can be a bit slow. Still, they always try to deliver

Overall, the APapers don't get an A+, but it's still an A for their quality services.

We definitely enjoyed this paper writing website with its professional help and timely delivery. We received an essay within a week without any problems. The chosen writer clearly explored the requested topic in the essay. It was well-structured and of high quality.

BuyEssayFriend.com – For Urgent Tasks

school essay writer

BuyEssayFriend.com is an online writing platform that helps students with all their academic tasks. It offers various services like custom essays, research papers, dissertations, book reviews, lab reports, etc. The website connects students with experienced writers who specialize in different subjects. Now, let's get into more details.

This is one of the most popular options among students. The website has the same range of academic services, including writing from scratch, editing, proofreading, and calculations. The website offers one of the best discount options among all reviewed platforms - 15% off on the first purchase.

The website is easy to navigate and provides information about the writers and their experience in this industry. It's a great feature because, like all other services that we've reviewed, you can choose a specific author who will write your academic paper.

These are the benefits of the service:

  • It has a user-friendly interface. The website is easy to navigate so that students can place orders quickly.
  • Wide range of services. The platform offers various academic writing services, including custom essays, research papers, and dissertations.
  • The service provides an option to choose writers. Students can select writers based on their expertise and ratings. This means they can choose someone more proficient if they have a dissertation request or other similar complex order.
  • Writers always deliver the orders on time. Many users have reported receiving their completed assignments within the specified deadlines.
  • Plagiarism-free papers. This essay writer service always provides original and unique content. Such a feature helps students maintain good grades.
  • The best discount for new clients.

However, the service has a few disadvantages:

  • They don’t work with urgent papers if they need a lot of time for research, and if it’s complex work.

Overall, BuyEssayFriend offers convenience and a variety of services.

We've decided to test authors on the BuyEssayFriend service. Thus, we've decided to choose a "basic" author instead of an advanced or a top one and ordered a 1000-word essay with a 1-day deadline. As a result, we've received a great essay within the chosen period and with all the necessary requirements included. Thus, our experience with this service was quite positive.

Receiving the final paper days before the deadline was another pleasant surprise, allowing us extra time for revisions. But they weren’t needed as the paper met all our requirements. Overall, this website is worth checking out if you need a top-notch college paper!

Is the best essay writing service legal?

The answer depends on what you mean by "legal." If you mean if it's legal to use such a service, yes, it isn’t against the law to order and receive papers from any of the reviewed services.

However, if you mean whether it's legal to use these services, receive a paper, and submit it as your own, that's where things get tricky. It’s still considered unethical to do so, even though you paid for the service, so it's "fair and square."

However, you can add changes to the text that you receive so that it matches your personal style. You can rephrase specific paragraphs or sentences so that it has some changes. Or you can use it as inspiration. Thus, the work that you submit will be different, and it could be considered ethical.

Is it safe to use the best paper writing service?

Yes, all the services that we've reviewed in this article are safe to use, and for a few reasons. Here's why they are safe:

  • Each website has an SSL protocol. It's a technology that protects personal and especially financial information. For example, when you create an account, log in, and pay for the order, you reveal your personal/financial information. SSL protocol ensures that no one can access this data.
  • All the services that we've mentioned use safe payment methods. Usually, all services accept Visa and MasterCard, but some also add American Express and PayPal to the list.
  • These companies value their reputation, which means they never reveal the data about their clients.

Additionally, users aren't requested to leave their real names and surnames.

How much will it cost to order the best essay?

It depends on a few important factors, such as the following:

  • The academic difficulty. Most services provide three levels, including undergraduate, bachelor's, and master's (professional). The most expensive is the master's level of difficulty.
  • The number of pages.
  • The service. For example, proofreading and editing are cheaper than writing from scratch.
  • The academic paper type. Ordering a PowerPoint presentation is cheaper than getting a dissertation.
  • The deadline. We recommend ordering beforehand to cut expenses.

Additionally, such factors as discounts or credits also count.

How do you order paper fast?

Usually, you can choose the platform and immediately go to the calculator on the main website. You have to fill out information carefully - this is crucial, and you don't want to hurry when placing an order. Ensure you specify the topic of the assignment and provide all the requirements from your professor or college. You may even attach files.

The next step is to pay for the service once you fill out the necessary data. We recommend registering an account since the reviewed platforms never ask for your real name. However, an account would be beneficial for the future if you ever decide to place another order. In this case, you may even get a discount as a loyal client. Thus, the entire process is fast, especially considering that the registration can be done via inserting an email and choosing a nickname.

What essays can I order on the best paper writing service?

You can order any type of essay or other academic paper. You may choose a traditional essay on any topic. These academic writing services also provide admission essay writing so that you can apply to a college or university with ease. These services also create argumentative and other types of essays.

All the services that we reviewed in this article also provide users with other academic papers. The list may include the following options:

  • term paper;
  • thesis statement;
  • dissertation;
  • research paper.

The list goes on, and most websites offer 25+ other options. Thus, students have a plethora of options to choose from.

Tea gives more information on staar essay machine scoring after spike in zeros, concerns from school leaders.

After a series of headlines about STAAR machine scoring and concerns from school leaders, the Texas Education Agency is offering more information to districts. Educators say there wasn’t enough advance notice about the changes.

FILE - In this Feb. 12, 2015, file photo, sixth grade students use a practice session to prepare for the the Common Core State Standards Test at Morgan Elementary School South in Stockport, Ohio. Republican presidential candidates are taking aim at Common Core, criticizing the academic standards as an overreach of the federal government. But Common Core was created by the states. And while the Obama administration had given states incentives to adopt those standards, a new federal education law bars Washington from continuing to do so.

After a spike in the number of students scoring a zero on STAAR writing questions and widespread concern from public school leaders about the shift to automated scoring this year, the Texas Education Agency is offering more information about the changes to the state's standardized test.

The agency said district testing coordinators will have "the opportunity to receive additional information about (student writing) that received a score of zero" if they contact the agency before Wednesday, March 13. In the message to testing coordinators , the TEA credited "educator inquiries about this first use of the hybrid scoring model."

Automated scoring is the latest change in a complete overhaul of the state's standardized test. Student composition scores plummeted after the STAAR 2.0 test was introduced last school year, even when writing was still graded by humans.

Over the past few weeks, school leaders have sounded the alarm about the shift to machine scoring for student writing this school year. They argued the automated scoring system has led to even lower scores, and they've criticized what they see as a lack of advance notice from the TEA.

"No one knew this was happening," said H.D. Chambers with the Texas School Alliance, which represents about 50 large public school districts. "The education field wasn’t told. There was no ‘Heads up, hey, this is happening,' and so it was just kind of discovered."

TEA officials have pushed back on that framing.

"For some reason, it's being portrayed as a quiet implementation," said assessment division director Jose Rios. "We did communicate during the fall (of 2023) to several stakeholders. We personally communicated this to all district testing coordinators in the fall during our big training that we call the kickoff of the year."

How does the new scoring model work?

The TEA changed a lot about the STAAR last school year when the test shifted entirely online. The STAAR 2.0 revamp marked the end of the separate writing exam in 4th and 7th grade; instead, writing is now included at every grade level.

The writing prompts are also different. Before last year, students generally wrote self-reflective responses to open-ended prompts, like "Write about the best teacher you know."

Now, students are asked to read passages, and then write a response to more narrow questions. The new grading rubrics are more stringent, making it more likely for a student response to score a zero. For example, a technically correct answer could earn a zero if it "lacks an introduction and conclusion" or "an organizational structure is not evident."

Even before the introduction of automated scoring this year, those changes contributed to a dramatic spike in the number of students scoring a zero for writing questions last year. Before the STAAR 2.0 revamp, 5% or less of students typically scored a zero on constructed writing responses. When students took the test in the spring of last year, more than 40% of third and fourth-graders across the state scored a zero, along with more than 20% of students in middle school and high school.

This school year brought another change — automated scoring for most student writing , first reported by the Dallas Morning News .

The early results from the December 2023 testing window have led to tension between school leaders and the TEA.

"We noticed, comparing those scores to ... when it was scored the old way, that the automated scoring engine was grading them much more difficult," Chambers said.

As Chris Rozunick with the TEA pointed out, the December testing window included many high schoolers who were "retesting" because they previously failed the exam. She also emphasized the sweeping changes to the writing prompts and grading rubrics.

"That more than anything else is driving up the zeros, particularly in December where you see a slightly larger retest population — kids who have tried the test and not passed," Rozunick said.

Back in spring 2023 — before the introduction of automated scoring — 25% of high schoolers scored a zero on writing compositions. Nineteen percent of first-time testers scored a 0, and 50% of retesters scored a 0.

Automated scoring was rolled out for the first time earlier this school year. For high schoolers who took the STAAR in December, almost 70% scored a 0 on the English I composition and almost 80% on English II. For first-time testers, more than 40% scored a zero, compared to more than 70% for retesters.

The TEA insists that machine scoring is in line with human grading.

"We’re confident in our results," Rozunick said. "We continue to look at things, you know, as they’re raised, and we haven’t seen any red flags to date."

When did the TEA actually announce automated scoring?

School leaders have argued the TEA did not provide enough advance notice about the shift to machine scoring.

"The concern with the specific issue of a machine scoring writing isn’t the true act of the machine scoring it, it’s more of the way it’s rolled out," Chambers said. "The reason that’s such a concern is because the stakes are so high with the accountability system."

STAAR results play a major role in the TEA's A through F accountability system, which assigns campuses and districts a letter grade based on student test scores and post-graduation readiness. The TEA revamped the accountability system last year. More than 100 school districts across the state sued the TEA over the changes, temporarily blocking the release of more stringent ratings.

In the eyes of Chambers, the machine scoring and A through F revamp represent the same thing — the TEA "moving the goalposts in the middle of the game."

A TEA spokesperson pointed to a state legislative hearing in August 2022 as the first time automated scoring was made public. Education Commissioner Mike Morath presented updates on standardized assessments to the House Public Education Committee. During his more than an hour-long presentation, he mentioned automation once.

"We are exploring cost-savings everywhere we can," Morath told lawmakers. "So, automation is a big way to save costs. If, for some reason, people don’t like automation, then we have to un-automate, which will cost you more money just to stay the course.”

According to the last slide of his presentation , "full human scoring" would cost up to $20 million more per year.

The agency spokesperson also pointed to training for testing coordinators in September 2023, presentations to "various stakeholder groups" in November, and the release of the " scoring process documents " in December.

According to the March 1 message from the TEA , district testing coordinators who contact the agency before March 13 will have the opportunity to view student responses that earned a 0 in December, but they won't be able to see the actual test questions or explanations of the grading rubrics "due to test security requirements."

Essay on Women's Day

Essay on Women’s Day: 8th March is annually celebrated as Women’s Day all over the world. Women´s Day is a global celebration that glorifies the remarkable achievements, toughness, and determination of women throughout history and worldwide. The day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle as well as success for gender equality, the rights of women, and their invaluable contributions to society. The day encourages society to appreciate the strength and courage of women and also raise awareness about the challenges they continue to face such as gender-based violence and unequal opportunities. It is a day to inspire the future generations to continue towards a more just and equitable society.

Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th. It is an event that pays tribute to the remarkable achievements of women across the various spheres of life. The day serves as an alarm for the struggles and triumphs of women worldwide and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the progress that is still to be made.

The origin of Women´s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century when women were fighting for their rights and equality including the right to vote, work and receive an education.

The first women’s day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909. It was not recognized until the United Nations, in the year 1975 officially recognized March 8th as International Women’s Day.

Throughout history, women have made important contributions to society. From innovative scientists like Marie Curies, who became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize to Amelia Earhart, who broke the stereotype barriers in the field of aviation and has consistently proven their strength and capability.

In politics, how can we forget Indra Gandhi, also known as The Iron Lady , the first female Prime Minister of India, and Angela Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany, who have shattered the glass ceiling of society and paved the way for future generations of female leaders? Essay on Women’s Day in 500 words

Women´s Day is a celebration that is celebrated across the world beyond borders and cultures. The day recognizes the remarkable achievements of women and their contributions to society. The day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing hardships of gender inequality and the importance of empowering women in all aspects such as STEM fields healthcare, rural development, and environmental leadership.

Women’s Day celebrations vary from place to place. In schools, workshops and events are organized based on themes like women’s rights, gender equality, and empowerment. Influential speakers and activists are invited to share their insights and experiences.

At social and cultural events, exhibitions featuring women artists or art that reflects women’s stories and struggles are organized. Plays, dance recitals, or concerts that highlight women’s achievements are conducted to spread awareness of women’s rights and empowerment.

Throughout our history, women have faced many challenges and obstacles but with their determination and perseverance, they have overcome these challenges and made a significant march towards equality. Whether it is the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) women have defined the morals and values of becoming a developer and innovator.

Her strong determination and dedication to space exploration have inspired countless young girls and women around the world to follow their passion in the STEM field.

On the international stage, women like Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize winner, have successfully achieved the cause of education for girls. In this educational cause, she risks her life and shows immense courage to shed light on the important issue of empowering women through education, as a fundamental human right. She better understood educating girls is the key driver of economic and social development.

Other women who have received Nobel prizes are Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, Jennifer Anne Doudna, Ada Yonath of the USA, etc.

Women have also emerged as powerful in the change of climate and environmental degradation. Famous public figures like Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan environmental activist and Nobel Prize winner, have demonstrated the crucial role of women in promoting sustainable practices and the protection of the planet for future generations.

Despite all the glory and achievements, women still face challenges like sexual harassment, gender bias, lack of flexible working hours, social norms and cultural practices and many more.

On this Women’s Day, let us celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of women and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of gender equality. By providing equal opportunities, access to resources, and the help of support systems, we can unlock the potential of women today and tomorrow and pave the way for future generations.

Practise to champion the rights and aspirations with the assurance that no woman will remain behind, which will in a real way be a celebration of Women’s Day.

‘The Holdovers' Accused of Plagiarism by ‘Luca' Writer

The Alexander Payne awards contender The Holdovers is facing controversy on the eve of the Oscars, where the script from David Hemingson is nominated for best original screenplay.

The feature stars Paul Giamatti as a cynical teacher at a boarding school who gets stuck caring for a teenage boy (Dominic Sessa) over Christmas break. According to Luca and Paddington 2 writer Simon Stephenson, the script has striking similarities to his unproduced screenplay for Frisco, about a cynical pediatrician who finds himself caring for a teenage patient over a period of days. The Frisco script had some notoriety, as in 2013 it landed on the Black List, which honors the year's best unproduced screenplays.

Stephenson prepared documents comparing scenes from both screenplays as well as their overall structure. Variety , which made one of those documents public Saturday, reported Stephenson sent it to the WGA in January to seek help. According to one document, Payne was sent drafts of the script in 2013 and 2019 in a bid to get him to board the project.

"The meaningful entirety of the screenplay for THE HOLDOVERS has been copied from the FRISCO screenplay by transposition," claims the document. "This includes the FRISCO screenplay's entire story, structure, sequencing, scenes, sequential sub-beats within scenes, line-by-line substance of action and dialogue, characters, arcs, relationships, theme and tone. A majority of this has been done line-for-line, and a large number of unique and highly specific elements created in FRISCO are readily and unequivocally identifiable in THE HOLDOVERS."

Among the similarities Stephenson highlighted was an early moment in which the protagonist is summoned to his boss' office and dressed down for wronging a politician. (In The Holdovers , Giamatti's character failed the son of a U.S. senator. In Frisco , the doctor protagonist calls a U.S. congresswoman., who was the mother of a patient, a moron.)

The Hollywood Reporter  has reached out to representatives for the WGA, Payne, Hemingson, and Stephenson. (Both Payne and Stephenson are repped by CAA, while Hemingson is at WME).

The Holdovers script is up against Maestro , Anatomy of a Fall , Maestro , May December and Past Lives for best original screenplay at the Oscars, which ended its voting window late last month. Late last year, Payne and Hemingson spoke to THR about the movie's origins. Payne said he had long wanted to make a film set at a boarding shcool, while Hemingson had written an unproduced TV pilot set at a school. The pilot script caught Payne's eye, and he called the screenwriter.

"I thought it was a prank call at first until I saw the Omaha area code and realized it actually was Alexander Payne," recalled Hemingson of getting that call from Payne. "And he said, ‘I have this film I want to do about this odiferous, socially challenged professor stuck at school over Christmas - would you be interested in writing it?'"

It’s Past Time to Quit Hoping the Courts Are Going to Stop Trump

The latest decisions out of the Supreme Court, first on when to hear former President Donald Trump’s immunity appeal, then on how to deal with his Colorado ballot disqualification, have made one thing very clear: We need to stop deluding ourselves that a majority of the Supreme Court sees the same political emergency that many of us do in terms of the threat Trump poses to American democracy. Whether it understood or even accounted for the consequences of the decision to delay the criminal case against him and to expedite its decision to keep him on the ballot, the high court ensured this past week that Trump is extremely unlikely to have a jury decide if he engaged in election subversion before voters cast their ballots for the next U.S. president this fall. After failures by outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and now the Supreme Court, it’s clear that if anyone is going to save American democracy, it is going to be the voters.

To briefly recap how we got here: Trump engaged in a multipronged effort to turn himself from a loser in the 2020 presidential election into a winner by pressuring federal, state, and local officials to find “fraud” or “irregularities” that could serve as the basis to send in a bunch of fake electors to Congress. That might have provided a fig leaf for allowing Congress to ignore the will of the voters and subvert the election outcome by declaring Trump the winner. The plan failed. After Trump’s lies inspired a violent invasion of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, Congress counted the real Electoral College votes, and Joe Biden was declared the winner. The House of Representatives impeached (again) Trump for his attempted election subversion ( again ), and 57 senators voted to convict, short of the 67 needed under the Senate’s rules. McConnell pointedly voted no, bringing others with him, arguing that the criminal and civil processes would take care of Trump.

That kicked the ball over to Garland’s court, where he did little—as far as the public is aware—for a long, long, long time . The Justice Department focused instead on the Capitol invaders, not the folks at the top who directed them or who participated in wider attempts to interfere with the peaceful and legal transition of power. Only belatedly did Garland appoint Jack Smith as special counsel to investigate these potential crimes, killing precious time that we all knew was ticking because Trump had said, early on, that he was going to run for president. By choosing to run, Trump put himself in a position to yell “Election interference!” as every charge was brought by a DOJ attorney headed by an appointee of his political rival. (Running also sets himself up for self-pardons or to scuttle ongoing federal cases if he wins the presidency again.)

It sure looks as if Smith moved expeditiously, not only in the election subversion case but also in the Florida classified documents case. But Trump has every incentive to delay, and a key part of his strategy involved taking an “interlocutory” (that is, before trial) appeal in the election interference case, claiming that he is wholly immune from criminal prosecution for official acts as president. (Never mind that many of his acts, such as cajoling the Georgia secretary of state to “find” 11,780 votes, were not in any way part of the official duties of a president, who has no role in running or supervising elections.)

The wheels of justice take time, but in this case the Supreme Court holds all the cards. Smith asked the justices back in December to let this appeal leapfrog over the D.C. Circuit, which sits between itself and the trial court, and the Supreme Court refused. That cost months. Then, after the circuit ruled against Trump, Smith tried to expedite things again.

Many of us wrongly believed that the court would move quickly and let the case get back to trial, on the reality-based theory that the American people deserve to know before voting if Trump, the candidate in 2024, was guilty as the 2020 candidate of trying to steal the election. The case for sending it back for trial is especially strong because Trump’s immunity argument on the merits is loony. As one D.C. Circuit judge noted, it would allow the president to order SEAL Team Six to assassinate political rivals without any consequences.

But the court did not move quickly. Not at all. After 13 days of silence following the end of emergency briefing, it set a schedule allowing almost two months of further briefing, with a likely decision delayed until two months after that, at the end of June. Compare that to Bush v. Gore , in which the Supreme Court went from order to hearing the case to issuing a final decision in just a few days. Or, perhaps more pertinently, compare it to the decision Monday to allow Trump to remain on the ballot, despite arguments for his disqualification under Section 3 of the 14 th Amendment, after a speed run of just three months.

Despite this timeline of a May or June (or July) SCOTUS decision, it is possible that Trump could go on trial for election subversion before the 2024 election. Indeed, over at Just Security, Norm Eisen, Matt Seligman, and Joshua Kolb game out eight-week trials and 12-week trials with different start dates going far into the fall up to and sometimes even through Election Day. And if you watch the cable news channels, you can see all kinds of legal commentators suggesting that the courts could still move heaven and earth to get this thing to trial by Election Day. The chief justice could release an opinion before dissents are authored. The court could still issue a decision in a matter of days after arguments.

But why should we expect the court to do anything of the sort in light of how it has acted already? Just because the court expedited the Colorado ballot removal case doesn’t mean that it considers the election subversion trial an emergency. We made a massive category error in imagining that at least six justices, the number needed to rubber-stamp the D.C. Circuit Court’s ruling without further argument, saw the need for speed in the Trump immunity case.

And what did the court do on the merits in the disqualification case? It not only held that states cannot enforce the disqualification provisions against an insurrectionist running for federal office. It put a straitjacket on Congress’s ability to enforce it too, raising serious questions about whether even Congress could possibly satisfy the Supreme Court if it attempts to say that Trump cannot serve as president again.

With disqualification off the table, attention turns back to the immunity appeal pending before the court and whether Trump can be rushed to trial before the election. There are a lot of people who are devoting their time to crafting scenarios in which the court might still evince interest in saving itself and the possibility of preserving a functioning democracy after the election by expediting a decision in Trump’s immunity appeal. That’s their prerogative, and we fervently hope they are correct. But let’s be candid about the fact that the court has missed its last best chance to do so: A completed trial before Election Day seems highly unlikely. Rolling Stone reports that Trump’s lawyers literally popped Champagne when the Supreme Court’s scheduling order came out.

Even though Smith has now taken the view that the internal rule keeping the DOJ from bringing charges within 60 days of the election doesn’t apply to criminal cases that have already been instituted, it would be quite extraordinary for a court to make one of the two major political party candidates stand for trial in the middle of the general election season and even during the period of early voting (which begins weeks before Nov. 5, Election Day). Would a court even start a trial before Election Day that wouldn’t be finished until afterward? Such trials are rare. We think of the 2008 case of Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, who wanted to go on trial and clear his name of corruption charges before the election. He went on trial, was convicted , and lost reelection. (A blistering report from the DOJ issued after trial showed that it hid exculpatory evidence from Stevens.)

And even if Judge Tanya Chutkan allows the trial to go forward, Trump has a right to put on his defense, and he would have every incentive to call witnesses and drag out sending the case to the jury until past Election Day.

Do we deserve a Supreme Court that cares about putting the evidence of Donald Trump’s potential criminality before the American people before they head to the polls? We do. Do we have such a court? We do not. Clearly. So, the sole remaining question seems to be whether it is a delusion or a useful exercise to spin out elaborate fantasies in which the justices reverse course to step up. Is producing an elaborate flowchart of a trial that might take place between the first and second presidential debates going to somehow soften and change a justice’s mind?

There are between four and five votes at the court to treat Trump’s presidency as ordinary and his actions in trying to reverse the election results as not a potential national emergency. As Aziz Huq notes , Donald Trump is getting treated infinitely better than most criminal defendants before the court, which doesn’t give a break even to those who are actually innocent of the crimes of which they are accused. We can sit around reading entrails from the court’s scheduling order in the immunity appeal to attempt to parse that breakdown and to hurl our efforts at changing those numbers through hope and limited influence. Or we can thank the court for its inadequate service and move on.

We should move on.

In the end, all this wishcasting about a Supreme Court that is going to save us has material costs. It deludes us into thinking that someone else is going to rush in while we watch and cheer from the stands. Call it Mueller Derangement Syndrome or whatever else you’d like. But let’s stop thinking there’s someone else. The 2024 election, like everything else, all comes down to turnout. That isn’t in the court’s hands. It’s in ours.

This Prophetic Academic Now Foresees the West’s Defeat

A photograph of Emmanuel Todd

By Christopher Caldwell

Mr. Caldwell is a contributing Opinion writer and the author of “The Age of Entitlement: America Since the Sixties.”

“If anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine, I assure you, he will not,” President Biden said during his State of the Union address on Thursday night. Europe is “at risk,” he added, as he welcomed Ulf Kristersson, the prime minister of Sweden, the newest member of NATO.

But Mr. Biden also said he remains “determined” that American soldiers will not be necessary to defend Europe. As a White House spokesman put it last week, it is “crystal clear” that the use of ground troops is off the table.

Mr. Kristersson’s head must have been spinning. The prospect of further Russian incursions was the strongest argument that the United States relied on to draw NATO into the war, and to draw new members, like Sweden, into NATO. But if such incursions were a genuine concern, then ground troops would be an option for the United States and its allies almost by definition.

The rationale for NATO participation in the Russo-Ukrainian war is getting fuzzier at the very moment when one would expect it to be getting clearer.

This is a problem. Europeans, like Americans, are tiring of the war. They are increasingly skeptical that Ukraine can win it. But perhaps most important, they distrust the United States, which has done little in this war to dispel skepticism about its motives and its competence that arose during the Iraq war two decades ago. Unique though Americans sometimes believe their polarization to be, all Western societies have a version of it. As Europe’s “elites” see it, NATO is fighting a war to beat back a Russian invasion. But as “populists” see it, American elites are leading a war to beat back a challenge to their own hegemony — no matter what the collateral damage.

American leadership is failing: That is the argument of an eccentric new book that since January has stood near the top of France’s best-seller lists. It is called “La Défaite de l’Occident” (“The Defeat of the West”). Its author, Emmanuel Todd, is a celebrated historian and anthropologist who in 1976, in a book called “The Final Fall,” used infant-mortality statistics to predict that the Soviet Union was headed for collapse.

Since then, what Mr. Todd writes about current events has tended to be received in Europe as prophecy. His book “After the Empire,” predicting the “breakdown of the American order,” came out in 2002, in the flush of post-9/11 national cohesion and before the debacle of the Iraq war, to which Mr. Todd was fiercely opposed. Anglophone (his doctorate is from Cambridge) and Anglophile (at least at the start of his career), he has grown steadily disillusioned with the United States, even anti-American.

Mr. Todd is a critic of American involvement in Ukraine, but his argument is not the now-familiar historical one made by the dissident political scientist John Mearsheimer. Like Mr. Mearsheimer, Mr. Todd questions the zealous expansion of NATO under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, the neoconservative ideology of democracy promotion and the official demonization of Russia. But his skepticism of U.S. involvement in Ukraine goes deeper. He believes American imperialism has not only endangered the rest of the world but also corroded American character.

In interviews over the past year, Mr. Todd has argued that Westerners focus too much on one surprise of the war: Ukraine’s ability to defy Russia’s far larger army. But there is a second surprise that has been underappreciated: Russia’s ability to defy the sanctions and seizures through which the United States sought to destroy the Russian economy. Even with its Western European allies in tow, the United States lacked the leverage to keep the world’s big, new economic actors in line. India took advantage of fire-sale prices for Russian energy. China provided Russia with sanctioned goods and electronic components.

And then the manufacturing base of the United States and its European allies proved inadequate to supply Ukraine with the matériel (particularly artillery) needed to stabilize, let alone win, the war. The United States no longer has the means to deliver on its foreign-policy promises.

People have been awaiting this moment for quite some time, not all of them as far from the corridors of power as Mr. Todd. Mr. Biden mentioned in his 2017 memoir that President Barack Obama used to warn him about “overpromising to the Ukrainian government.” Now we see why.

Mr. Todd contends that Americans’ heedless plunge into the global economy was a mistake. Parts of his case will be familiar from other authors: The United States produces fewer cars than it did in the 1980s; it produces less wheat. But parts of his case involve deeper, long-term cultural shifts perennially associated with prosperity. We used to call them decadence.

In an advanced, highly educated society like ours, Mr. Todd argues, too many people aspire to the work of running things and bossing people around. They want to be politicians, artists, managers. This doesn’t always require learning intellectually complex stuff . “In the long run, educational progress has brought educational decline,” he writes, “because it has led to the disappearance of those values that favor education.”

Mr. Todd calculates that the United States produces fewer engineers than Russia does, not just per capita but in absolute numbers. It is experiencing an “internal brain drain,” as its young people drift from demanding, high-skill, high-value-added occupations to law, finance and various occupations that merely transfer value around the economy and in some cases may even destroy it. (He asks us to consider the ravages of the opioid industry, for instance.)

As Mr. Todd sees it, the West’s decision to outsource its industrial base is more than bad policy; it is also evidence of a project to exploit the rest of the world. But ringing up profits is not the only thing America does in the world — it also spreads a system of liberal values, which are often described as universal human rights. A specialist in the anthropology of families, Mr. Todd warns that a lot of the values Americans are currently spreading are less universal than Americans think.

Anglo-American family structures, for example, have traditionally been less patriarchal than those almost anyplace else in the world. As it has modernized, the United States has come to espouse a model of sex and gender that conjugates poorly with those of traditional cultures (such as India’s) and more patriarchal modern ones (such as Russia’s).

Mr. Todd is not a moralizer. But he insists that traditional cultures have a lot to fear from the West’s various progressive leanings and may resist allying themselves on foreign policy with those who espouse them. In a similar way, during the Cold War, the Soviet Union’s official atheism was a deal-breaker for many people who might otherwise have been well disposed toward Communism.

Mr. Todd does believe that certain of our values are “deeply negative.” He presents evidence that the West does not value the lives of its young. Infant mortality, the telltale metric that led him to predict the Soviet collapse half a century ago, is higher in Mr. Biden’s America (5.4 per thousand) than in Mr. Putin’s Russia — and three times higher than in the Japan of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

While Mr. Todd is, again, not judgmental on sexual matters, he is judgmental on intellectual ones. The inability to distinguish facts from wishes astounds him at every turn of the Ukraine war. The American hope early in the war that China might cooperate in a sanctions regime against Russia, thereby helping the United States refine a weapon that would one day be aimed at China itself, is, for Mr. Todd, a “delirium.”

For students of the Vietnam War, there is much in Mr. Todd’s book that recalls the historian Loren Baritz’s classic 1985 book, “Backfire,” which drew on popular culture, patriotic mythology and management theory to explain what had led the United States astray in Vietnam. Mr. Baritz concluded, “We are what went wrong in Vietnam.” Had Lyndon Johnson managed to impose his will on the Vietnamese, Mr. Baritz reflected, “an entire culture would have been utterly destroyed out of the goodness of the American heart.”

One is constantly reading in the papers that Vladimir Putin is a threat to the Western order. Maybe. But the larger threat to the Western order is the hubris of those who run it.

Fighting a war based on values requires good values. At a bare minimum it requires an agreement on the values being spread, and the United States is further from such agreement than it has ever been in its history — further, even, than it was on the eve of the Civil War. At times it seems there are no national principles, only partisan ones, with each side convinced that the other is trying not just to run the government but also to capture the state.

Until some new consensus emerges, President Biden is misrepresenting his country in presenting it as stable and unified enough to commit to anything . Ukrainians are learning this at a steep cost.

What The Conviction of a Parent of a School Shooter Could Mean

Stephanie Desmon

The manslaughter conviction of Jennifer Crumbley, whose son shot and killed four students at his school, is unprecedented. But will it be a watershed moment for gun violence in schools? In this Q&A, adapted from the March 1 episode of Public Health On Call , Tim Carey , JD, a law and policy adviser at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions , talks about the unique facts of this case, its larger implications, and why child access prevention laws are an important part of the conversation.

Tell us about this unprecedented case. The case of Jennifer Crumbley is truly unprecedented.

Never before in the history of this country has a parent been charged for the offenses committed by their child in a school shooting, which is saying something in America, where we have the highest rate of school shootings among peer nations.

To get a sense of why this case is so important, let's look at the facts. There was a hearing in a Michigan criminal court in February 2024 where [Jennifer Crumbley] the mother of the Oxford High School shooter was tried and found guilty on four counts of manslaughter, one for each child that her son murdered in the Oxford High School shooting on November 30, 2021. The rationale behind these charges was that she was so negligent, so reckless in how she handled firearms, how she allowed her child to have access to firearms, and how she failed to see or act upon all the warning signs that led up to the shooting, that the court actually found her criminally liable.

To understand the gravity of how the court reached this finding, we should look back to the shooting itself. On that day, school officials brought the shooter's parents into school to discuss their son's mental health and well-being after he depicted a gun and bloodshed on a school assignment. His teachers were very worried and called his parents that same day, but the parents opted to not take their child home. Hours later, the child began shooting fellow students and school staff with a gun that he had in his backpack that his parents had bought for him a few days before.

This child [Ethan Crumbley] killed four students and wounded seven others, including a teacher. He was 15 at the time he committed this crime and was later found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in his own criminal case. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole last year.

So his mother gifted him this gun at 15 years old?

Yes. In Michigan, youth under age 18—can possess guns legally in certain circumstances. Typically they revolve around hunting, being at a shooting range, or otherwise being under the supervision of someone older than 18. In this case, though it is technically legal in Michigan for this child to possess the gun, the context in which the child used the gun was not legal.

To me, these facts are egregious, and this seems like the perfect case to find the parent responsible. Do you think there will be other cases where the parent is found liable?

It's definitely been buzzing around in news cycles recently, but was this case a watershed moment for other parents to be held criminally liable for the actions of their children? It's unlikely, in large part because of just how extreme this particular case was. The parents gave their troubled child a firearm days before the shooting and ignored flagrant warning signs of violence that were clearly evident to the school to the point where they brought the parents in.

The facts are so clear in this case that I could see readily how a jury would find the parents’ conduct to be worthy of criminal negligence and recklessness. The majority of school shooting cases aren’t this clear cut—it’s sometimes unclear how the child got access to the gun or how visible the warning signs were.

I think this case is very important in terms of accountability, and it’s bringing attention to the critical issue of youth firearm access. But there's still much to be done in terms of mitigating the risks of further gun violence in schools, and I don't think this case will solve all of that.

Ethan Crumbley's father is also scheduled to be tried for the same crimes.

Yes, that's right. Due to the unprecedented nature of the rulings, we expect to see appeals, which could take years. But at least at this moment, it has shown a new avenue, a different treatment toward school shootings and accountability.

About three-quarters of school shooters in recent years got their guns at home. What does this mean in terms of liability?

Comprehensive investigations of school shootings between 1999 and 2018 found that around 80% of school shooters obtained the guns they used in the shooting from their home or from the home of a friend, which implies that unsecured, readily accessible firearms are part of what enables youth to harm themselves and others with guns.

This brings us to evidence-based policy that the Center for Gun Violence Solutions has advocated for in many states: safe storage laws.

Safe storage laws provide clear guidance for how firearms should be stored: in a locked container, unloaded, and otherwise inaccessible to people not authorized to use them—largely minors and children, but also home invaders, friends, guests—essentially anyone who doesn't own the gun.

Among the safe storage laws is a subsection called child access prevention (CAP) laws. CAP laws require that there be safe storage of firearms, and if a child accesses those firearms, there are additional levels of criminal penalties in most cases or civil liability in some states.

I n light of what happened in Michigan, I understand you testified before state legislators about safe storage laws?

Yes. Michigan had a landmark legislative session in 2023 regarding firearms laws and policies. One critical policy they introduced and later passed was a CAP law that was in large part inspired by this case, as well as by seeing this law being used and implemented across the country.

CDC data from the past several years has shown that firearms were the leading cause of death for youth ages 1–19 in the U.S. in 2020, 2021, and 2022. And though we're still analyzing data from 2023, it's unfortunately expected for that trend to remain the same.

There's been a lot more focus on how to prevent youth from accessing firearms and using them to harm themselves or others, and CAP laws have shown to be an effective means of doing so.

We almost never see charges against the parents in the case of school shootings. Is that because the laws aren't in place, or is it because prosecutors don't choose to pursue the parents?

Part of the issue, and why we see fewer court hearings on these cases in particular, is that they are tragedies. Often in these cases, the child takes their own life, which can be painful. For prosecutors, sometimes it's difficult to imagine trying a parent who is mourning the loss of their child. However, this case was different. The negligence and recklessness on the part of the parents in the Oxford High School shooting case are at an entirely different level than the majority of school shooting cases.

But still, there's a general discomfort or unwillingness to bring charges in these cases, if the facts are even clear enough to bring a case at all. This is why instead of applying punitive measures after the fact, preventative and educational measures such as CAP laws help put parents on notice about how firearms should be safely stored. It also establishes the gravity of what it could mean if a child were to access these guns and makes it less likely that youth will access them and use them.

So, even though the case in Michigan is unique, it does open parents’ eyes to what could happen if they aren't more careful.

Exactly. This is a tragic situation, but it does at least raise awareness that this is a serious issue.

But for his [Ethan Crumbley] parents buying him a gun, he would not have had one. But for parents leaving their firearms unlocked, loaded, and in readily accessible places, a child would not have been able to get them and use them to commit a shooting. Again, a lot of our focus here is on prevention: how we can see the risks in front of us, calculate the measures, and then try to find ways to mitigate them. And this is where CAP laws really shine.

Note: Since this podcast was recorded, a man in Michigan became the first person to be charged under the state’s new firearms storage law. The law requires gun owners to store firearms unloaded and secured with a locking device or in a lockbox if a minor lives at or is likely to visit their property.
