English Essay on “My Country” complete Paragraph and Speech for School, College Students, essay for Class 8, 9, 10, 12 and Graduation Classes.

My country is always fore-most in my thoughts. I can sacrifice everything, including’ my life for the sake of my country. I always think of my country having an honourable place in the comity of nations. Everybody is proud of his country and so am I. It is my heart-felt desire to see my country progress by leaps and bounds.

I love my country, my motherland. India. I want to see her grow from strength to strength because weak nations attract invasions from powerful countries. Also a weak nation has no right to exist. Weak nations are always devoured by powerful nations. Therefore, I wish to see my country powerful, economically and militarily. Only political independence will not help the country. Economic independence is necessary and must accompany political independence. And there is no doubt our country is heading towards economic independence through its Five Years Plans.

India is a lovely country endowed with beautiful mountains, valleys, plains, rivers and forests. It has a long sea-coast. It has all types of climates to enjoy. It has majestic monuments and buildings of historical importance.

India is the biggest democracy of the world. We elect our own government through general elections. It is the representatives of the people who rule the country keeping in view the welfare of its citizens. India is a welfare state where the good of the people is foremost in the thoughts of its people and government.

India is the most populous country in the world, next only to China. Only weak thing is its human resources have not been properly harnessed so far. But now steps have been taken to tap this potential. However, the population explosion is also worrying the countrymen. Government of India is taking steps to check the growing trend in population through various family planning programmes.

India has had an old civilization and culture. Its traditions and culture are very rich. But some of them have now outlived their utility and the same are being shed through cultural and educational awakening. People are getting rid of superstitions and are becoming more scientific in their attitude towards life.

India is primarily a land of villages Almost eighty per cent of its population live and work in the countryside. But the villagers are mostly illiterate and they are not able to catch up with modern science and technology. Now the state governments have decided to take up projects for their welfare. Also steps are being taken to educate them and train them to improve their lot through various welfare programmes like 20-point programme.

India of today, that is, Modern India, is no more the land of magic as it was thought to be earlier. Now-a-days, India is marching on the road to development through industrialization and mechanization of agriculture. Our country is producing most of the industrial goods including aircrafts and battle tanks.

I am very much proud of my country. If politicians avoid interfering with the various aspects of life and work with devotion and dedication India can still scale newer heights in every field of life.

Those who fast, must neither take food nor drink throughout the hours of daylight. Above all, they must keep away from things shameful, and telling lies.

Fasting can be a little difficult when it falls during summer. Though it will be a little difficult, a Muslim fasts joyfully in any season, obeying the orders of Allah. There are Muslims who love summertime fasting the most. There is a deep relationship between Ramadhan and the Holy Quran. How could TV be better?

We all enjoy watching television. One of the main reasons which we watch television is to gain knowledge. Some knowledgeable channels are NatGeo, Discovery, NDTV Good times, NatGeo Geography etc. These channels are based on all about the world and types of people, natural disasters, ancient and historical places and many more.

There are also other useful as well as fun and interesting channels. For example, FoxLife is a channel which displays different types of food and recipes. They tell us about types of food eaten in various parts of the world. We as kids love watching animated programmes which can be found on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Pogo and many more. We can watch cartoons such as Tom and Jerry which have a moral.

It teaches us not to fight and quarrel and instead to live in peace, friendship and harmony. News is one of the most important programmes that we must watch. We must make it a habit of watching at least one news episode a day as there are many news updates daily from early morning until midnight.

By watching these types of important programmes we can develop our brain and learn a lot about the world. We can also watch cartoon but not too much as it may affect our eyesight and brain.

An unforgettable trip We went on a trip to England for a few months. I had lots of fun while we were travelling. It was a great experience for us. We went there after two days. I was so excited. After we went there we had lots of fun playing tennis. Then at night we settled in a great five-star hotel. We had our dinner from that hotel. It was very delicious. Then in the morning we went to our uncle’s house. It was near the hotel. All of us went to Bits Park to play. We were very fortunate because it was winter season as well as snowy days. We made a snowman and played with snowballs. Then after a few days, my parents as well as my uncle entered me into a famous school in England. It is called ‘Richard Rose Morton Academy.’ It was a turning point in my life. I learned to speak English properly from my school. That’s why I respect my school. My life was changed from that day. I met a myriad of friends called Daisy, Molly and Kara. My sister and my brother also entered into a school. I have never seen snow before that day. We went to see a duck park. It was a fantastic park. That’s how I spent my trip. I can’t forget it forever.

I talk to the plants and sing to them. I feel as if my plants nod their heads in agreement. All plants are living things. My hobby gives me happiness and some exercise for my body. My hobby satisfies my inner urge and gets an emotional response.

My beloved Country is India

Our country India is also known by the names Hindustan and Bharat. We got Independence on 15th August 1947. Many patriots sacrificed their lives for this land and to give freedom to their future generation.

India is the 7th largest and second most populated country in the world with a population of 1.366 billion. It is a democratic country with parliamentary system where people have the right to make their own decision about country and government.

Its capital is New Delhi. There are 7 union territories and 29 states here and, in those states, there are many small cities and villages. Among these states, Madhya Pardesh is the largest and Goa is the smallest state.

Our flag is tri-colored; saffron, white and green. Saffron color stands for purity and cleanliness, the white color in the middle stands for peace and the lowest green color stands for fertility. India is surrounded by oceans from three sides. Bay of Bengal lies in east, Indian ocean in South and Arabian sea lies in the west side. In the north side, there is great Himalayas which is the highest mountain range in this world.

It has 9 highest peaks of this world including Mount Everest. Our neighbors are Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

National bird of India is peacock. The significance of peacock is related to cultural diversity in India. National animal of India is Tiger because of its strength and speed.

Our country is the land of fields and villages. Its soil is very fertile and yields finest crops. That is the reason that it is known as the largest wheat producer in the world.

Much of the country’s economy is dependent on this agriculture. The highest irrigated crop here are sugarcane, cotton, wheat and rice. Even though people of different religions live here and they worship their Gods yet they live in so much peace and harmony.

They are free to follow their own cultures and speak their own language without any hindrance. That is why India is famous for its ‘unity in diversity’. We should be proud that our country is admired all over the world for its rich cultures and traditions.

Our country is our proud. Our people have made many contributions in the field of science, arts, math, music, dance, mathematics and sports and earned many medals for country. We are proud to be the inhabitants of this country.

Many people devoted their lives just to make this country free from the chains of slavery. Now it is up to this young generation to maintain the uniqueness and make this country prouder. We need to understand that we will strengthen our country when we work together.

Duty towards my Country Essay 300 words

Duty of a person is the responsibility which he/she needs to perform individually. A citizen living in the society, community or country has various duties and responsibilities towards the society, community and country to be performed in right manner. People should have faith in goodness and never ignore important duties towards their country.

My Duties towards my Country as being a Citizen

Years have been passed since our country got independence from the British rule by the sacrifices of many great freedom fighters. They were real followers of their duties towards country who really made possible the dream of freedom in the country by paying very costly cost of lives of millions of people. After independence of India, rich people and politicians got involved in their own development only and not the country. It is true that we have been independent from the British rule however not from the greediness, crimes, corruption, irresponsibility, social issues, child labour, poverty, cruelty, terrorism, female infanticide, gender inequality, dowry death, gang rape, and other illegal activities.

It is not enough making only rules, regulations, laws, acts, campaigns and programmes by the government, they are needed to be followed strictly by each and every Indian citizen to be really free from all the illegal activities. Indian citizens need to perform their loyal duties towards country for the betterment of everyone by eliminating poverty, gender inequality, child labour, crimes against women and other social issues. Indian citizens have right to select their own political leader which can lead their country in right direction towards development. So, they do not have right to blame bad people in their life. They must keep their eyes opened while voting their political leaders and chose the one who is really free of corrupt mind and has capability to lead a country.

It is must for the people of India to perform their duties individually towards country to really become independent in true sense. It is very necessary for the development of the country which can be possible only from the end of its disciplined, punctual, dutiful and honest citizens.

Duty towards my Country Essay 400 words

A person has various duties in his/her life towards himself, family, parents, kids, wife, husband, neighbors, society, community and most importantly towards the country. Duties of a person towards country are very important to maintain its dignity, bright future, and lead it towards betterment.

I am an Indian citizen as I took birth here. As being a responsible citizen of the country, I have many duties towards my country which I must fulfill all that. I have to perform my duties in various aspects and all that related to the development of my country.

What is Duty

Duty is a task or action needed to be performed by each and every individual of the country on regular basis for the betterment and more development. Performing duty loyally is the responsibility of Indian citizens and is the demand of development in country.

What are my Duties towards my Country

Citizen of a country is the person who lives almost his/her full life and leaves his/her ancestors too, so everyone has some duties towards country. Take an example of home in which various members live together however everyone has to follow all the rules and regulations made by a most senior person or head of the family for the betterment and peaceful life in the home. Just like that, our country is like a home in which people of various religions live together however they need to follow some rules and regulations made by the government for more development in the country. Loyal duties of citizens aim to remove all the social issues, bring real independence in the country and come under the category of developed countries.

People working in the government or private offices, must go on time and perform their duties loyally without wasting time as there is a true saying that “if we destroy time, time will destroy us”. Time never waits anyone, it runs continuously and we should learn from the time. We should not stay until we get the goal in our life. The most important goal of our life is to make our country a great country in true sense.

We should not be selfish people and understand our duties towards country. It’s we, not others who are both, the victim and the benefiter. Our each and every activity affects us in positive and negative manner (if we do positive we become benefiter and if we do negative we become victim). So, why we do not take pledge today to take our each and every step positively in right direction in order to get protected from being a victim in our own country. It is us who have right to rule the country by selecting a good leader. So, why we blame others or politicians, we should blame only us and not others as it’s we who are not performing duties according to the demand. We have been involved in our own daily routine only and have not any mean to other’s life, extracurricular activities, political affairs of the country, etc. It is our mistake that our country is still in the category of developing country and not in the developed country.

It is a big problem man; we should not take it easy. We should not be greedy and selfish; we should live and let others live a healthy and peaceful life. The bright future of our country is in our own hand. Still there is a time and chance for us, we can do better. Start living with open eyes and perform true duties towards the country. We should maintain the cleanliness of our heart, body, mind and surrounding areas for the good start.

Duty towards my Country Essay 600 words

Duties of Citizens towards Country as : Following are the responsibilities of Indian citizens at their different positions:

  • Parents : Parents are highly responsible for their country as they are the main source of giving good or bad leaders to the country. They are considered as the first basic school for their kids so they should be attentive all time as they are responsible to nourish the future of the country. Because of some greedy parents (whether poor or rich), our country is still having poverty, gender inequality, child labour, bad social or political leaders, female infanticide, and thus poor future of the country. All the parents should understand their duties towards country and must send their kids to the school (whether boy or girl) for proper education, take care of the health, hygiene and moral development of their kids, teach good habits and etiquettes, and teach them their responsibilities towards country.
  • Teacher : Teachers are the secondary source of giving their country a nice future by making their students as good and successful citizens of country in the future. They should understand their duties towards country and never show difference among their students (rich and poor, genius and average students, etc). They should teach their all students in equal manner in order to give good leaders and bright future to the country.
  • Doctor : A doctor is considered as God for the patients as he/she gives new life to them. Because of some greedy doctors, high technique treatments are not available within the country. They are very costly to which poor or even middle class people cannot afford. Some government doctors do not perform their duties well in the hospital and open their personal clinics at many places to earn more money. They should understand their responsibility of making available all the costly treatments at affordable cost within the country. They should not go abroad after higher study however, work in their own country for better development.
  • Engineer : Engineers are highly responsible for the infrastructure development in the country. They should positively use their knowledge and professional skills in right direction to develop their country. They should not involve in corruption and be loyal to their duties.
  • Politician : The status of the country depends on its politician. A politician (who is not greedy and not involved in corruption) plays various great roles in the development of country whereas a corrupt politician can destroy the country. So, a politician must understand and perform his/her duties towards country.
  • Policemen : Police is allotted at various places in the city, state and national level in order to maintain security, peace and harmony all over the country. They are the hope of people, so they should be loyal towards people as well as country.
  • Businessmen : The duty of a businessman towards his country is to create more employment in the country and not in abroad in order to improve economy as well as reduce poverty in the country. He should not involve in the corruption and smuggling.
  • Sportsperson : Sportsperson should play their games and sports loyally in their own country and should not involve in any type of corruption or match fixing as they are role model to many growing youths of the country.
  • Common Citizen (Aam Adami) : Common citizens are highly responsible in various ways to their country. They should understand their loyal duties and chose a good leader to lead their country in right direction. They should make their home and surrounding areas neat and clean so that they can be healthy, happy and free of diseases. They should be disciplined, punctual, and always be on time without getting late even for a minute to their job where they are working in any profession.

Essay on My Country Pakistan

The full name of my country Pakistan is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan which is situated in the Asian Subcontinental with a rich history and a diverse culture. It comes into being as a separate country on August 14, 1947, from British authority. The population of Pakistan is 220 million with the fifth-most populated nation in the world. The nation is endowed with stunning natural scenery, a wealth of resources, and strong citizens. Urdu is the national language of the nation of Pakistan. In this essay “ Essay on My Country Pakistan “, I shall discuss the numerous facets of my adored nation and the reasons I am pleased to identify as a Pakistani.

Geographical Features:

Pakistan has an important position in the world according to its geographical extensive because towering mountains, rich plains, and enormous deserts all make up Pakistan’s varied terrain. The largest rivers in the world such as the Indus River which flows across the  Punjab and Sindh provinces and has been the backbone of our civilization, are found in Pakistan. The Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges in northern Pakistan are home to K2, which is the second-highest mountain in the world.

Cultural Heritage:

Pakistan is famous for its wealthy cultural background. Pakistan as an Islamic Republic of Pakistan has a Muslim-majority with an Islamic culture. Pakistan has a rich history dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Throughout the centuries, various empires and dynasties, such as the Mauryans, the Mughals, and the British, have left their mark on our culture. This diversity is also reflected in the languages spoken in Pakistan, with Urdu being the national language and Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, and others being regional languages.

Religious Diversity:

Islam is the official religion of Pakistan, which is a country with a large Muslim population. However, there are sizable religious minorities in the nation as well, including Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and others. The right to practice one’s religion and the guarantee of religious freedom provided by the constitution encourages cohabitation and tolerance.

Social Challenges:

Despite having a rich culture and history, Pakistan still has a number of societal issues. Some of the important problems include healthcare inequality, poverty, and illiteracy. To address these issues and raise everyone’s standard of living, the government and other non-governmental organizations are working nonstop.

Economy and Development:

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture, which is the foundation of Pakistan’s economy. Wheat, cotton, rice, and sugarcane are all important crops. The nation also possesses large natural resource reserves, including coal, natural gas, and minerals. Pakistan has advanced in industrialization and technology recently, which has aided in the country’s growth and development.

Education and Literacy:

Pakistan is no exception when it comes to the importance of education for national advancement. Although improvements are being made to the educational system, the nation still has issues with access to high-quality education, particularly in rural areas. For the country to grow, literacy rates must rise and equal educational opportunities must be offered to all.

Traditional Cuisine:

Pakistani cuisine is a delightful blend of flavors, reflecting the diverse cultures and culinary traditions of the region. Spices play a crucial role in our dishes, and each province has its signature delicacies. From mouth-watering Biryanis to succulent kebabs and sweet desserts like Gulab Jamun and Jalebi, Pakistani food is a treat for the taste buds.

Arts and Literature:

Pakistan has a thriving cultural and literary history. Our classical music, especially the mystical Sufi music, is known across the world. Literature, poetry, and painting have all benefited greatly from the work of Pakistani authors and artists. Famous poets like Allama Iqbal and Faiz Ahmed Faiz continue to be an inspiration to people everywhere, not just in Pakistan.

Visitors from all over the world come to Pakistan to enjoy its natural beauty. A few of Pakistan’s treasures are the picturesque valleys of Swat and Hunza, the ancient cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Taxila, and the breathtaking scenery of Gilgit-Baltistan. In addition to promoting tourism, the government is working to protect our cultural and natural legacy.

Sports and Cricket:

Pakistanis have a strong affection for sports, particularly cricket. Cricket is more than just a sport; it is an emotion that unites the entire nation. Legendary cricketers from Pakistan have excelled internationally and brought honor to the nation.

Conclusion:

Pakistan is a beautiful, historic, and diverse country. My country Pakistan has a distinct personality that makes me proud, from its geographical aspects to its cultural heritage and its tolerance of different religions. But it also has a lot of obstacles to overcome, which will take teamwork. As a Pakistani, I have faith in a better future when advancement and prosperity would be fueled by social equality, economic growth, and education. Let’s protect our cultural legacy , cooperate to solve our problems, and work toward a better tomorrow for Pakistan and its people.

Global CO 2 emissions for 2023 increased by only 0.1% relative to 2022 (following increases of 5.4% and 1.9% in 2021 and 2022, respectively), reaching 35.8 Gt CO 2 . These 2023 emissions consumed 10–66.7% of the remaining carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5°C, suggesting permissible emissions could be depleted within 0.5–6 years (67% likelihood).

Data from the Carbon Monitor indicate 35.8 Gt CO 2 were emitted globally in 2023.

Although the trend is upwards, the pace of growth has been slowing, suggesting global emissions might have plateaued.

India overtook the EU as the third highest emitter globally.

Annual global CO 2 emissions dropped markedly in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, decreasing by 5.8% relative to 2019 (ref. 1 ). There were hopes that green economic stimulus packages during the COVD crisis might mark the beginning of a longer-term decrease in global emissions toward net-zero emissions, but instead emissions rebounded and quickly exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 2021. However, year-on-year growth has slowed, with 5.4% increases in 2021 (ref. 2 ) (reaching 35.1 Gt CO 2 ) and 1.9% increases in 2022 (ref. 3 ) (reaching 35.7 Gt CO 2 ), rapidly using up the remaining carbon budget. Here, we outline global CO 2 emissions (encompassing fossil fuel combustion and cement production) from the Carbon Monitor project ( https://carbonmonitor.org ) for the year 2023.

Global CO 2 emissions in 2023

Overall, global CO 2 emissions in 2023 reached 35.8 ± 0.3 Gt CO 2 , an all-time high (Fig.  1 ). Total emissions were 35.3, 33.3, 35.1 and 35.7 in 2019–2022, meaning year-on-year changes of –5.8% from 2019 to 2020, 5.4% from 2020 to 2021, 1.9% from 2021 to 2022 and 0.1% from 2022 to 2023. This slight increase of 0.1% (–0.6 to + 1.1%) from 2022 to 2023 is less than the 1.1 ± 1.0% increase forecast by the Global Carbon Project (GCP) 4 . Although difficult to predict, the continued deceleration in growth rates might signal a plateauing or peaking of global CO 2 emissions in 2023, as has been suggested by the International Energy Agency (IEA) 5 . The trajectory of emissions in 2024 will offer further evidence.

figure 1

Historical CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion and the process of cement production (‘Fossil CO 2 ’) 8 coloured by industry sector, and those with land-use change (LUC) emissions 4 (‘Fossil + LUC’). International bunkers describe emissions from international aviation and international shipping. The inset displays daily near-real-time CO 2 emissions since 2019 from the Carbon Monitor 1 initiative and year-on-year percent changes. Note that total emissions and percent changes have been revised slightly from earlier estimates 2 , 3 owing to revised data and updated methodologies 9 , 10 . Global CO 2 emissions continued to grow after a brief decline in 2020, but the rate of that growth slowed in 2023; if these progressions continue, the remaining 1.5 °C carbon budget could be used within 0.5–6 years.

The sectoral contributions to these emissions are broadly similar to previous years. The power sector accounted for 38.4% of global CO 2 emissions, industry for 29.0%, ground transportation for 18.6%, residential for 9.4%, international bunkers (international aviation and shipping) for 3.5%, and domestic aviation for 1.0%. Moreover, the pattern of decelerating growth of 2023 global emissions is also evident at the sectoral level. For instance, year-on-year changes in power sector emissions went from + 0.9% in 2022 to –0.2% in 2023, industry emissions from + 1.6% to –0.8%, residential emissions from + 0.9% to –5.5%, and international bunkers from + 18.1% to + 8.9%. However, there were exceptions: ground transportation growth increased from + 2.5% in 2022 to + 3.1% in 2023, while domestic aviation rebounded from –1.0% in 2022 to + 14.0% in 2023. Nevertheless, both domestic and international aviation remain below pre-pandemic levels (2023 emissions were –1.9% and –9.6% less than 2019, respectively).

At the country level, combined emissions from the top five emitters remain similar to previous years. In descending order, China, the United States, India, the European Union (excluding the UK), and Russia collectively accounted for 64% of global emissions, or 23.0 Gt CO 2 . However, interannual fluctuations are apparent when comparing 2022 and 2023, making it difficult to predict long time trends toward zero emissions. For instance, emissions from China (the largest emitter) decreased by 1.9% to 11.0 Gt CO 2 in 2022 but rebounded + 2.9% to 11.3 Gt CO 2 in 2023. By contrast, other regions have maintained earlier increases. Emissions from India, for example, surged by 6.9% to 2.6 Gt CO 2 in 2022 and by another 4.4% to 2.8 Gt CO 2 in 2023; in doing so, India surpassed the EU to become the third highest emitter. Russia exhibited a similar increase, whereby emissions increased by 1.0% to 1.5 Gt CO 2 in 2022 and grew by 2.4% to 1.6 Gt CO 2 in 2023. Meanwhile, emissions began to decrease in other regions. In the United States, emissions increased by 3.0% to 5.0 Gt CO 2 in 2022 but decreased by 2.4% to 4.9 Gt CO 2 in 2023. Similarly, the European Union’s emissions increased by 0.3% to 2.8 Gt CO 2 in 2022 but decreased by 6.2% to 2.6 Gt CO 2 in 2023.

Carbon budget countdown

Global CO 2 emissions are rapidly depleting reported carbon budgets — that is, the amount of carbon that can be released while limiting anthropogenic warming to 1.5 °C and 2 °C above pre-industrial temperatures, as outlined by the Paris Agreement. At 67% likelihood, the IPCC set this budget (starting from 2020 and assuming no overshoot) at 400 Gt CO 2 for 1.5 °C warming 6 . The years 2020, 2021 and 2022 depleted the budget by 9.4% (38 Gt CO 2 ), 9.9% (39 Gt CO 2 ) and 10.0% (40 Gt CO 2 ), respectively, with 2023 emissions using a further 10% (40 Gt CO 2 ). A total of 243 Gt CO 2 remain, which could be exhausted within 6.1 years unless emissions fall sharply. At 83% likelihood, the post-2020 budget to avoid 1.5 °C is only 300 Gt CO 2 . In this case, 2023 emissions depleted 13.3% of the budget, with the remaining 143 Gt CO 2 potentially exhausted within 3.6 years. The carbon budgets for 2 °C warming are larger. At 67% likelihood, the 2°C budget is 1,150 Gt CO 2 , 3.5% of which was used in 2023; the remaining 993 Gt CO 2 could be exhausted within 24.8 years unless growth rates fall. At 83% likelihood, the 2 °C budget is 900 Gt CO 2 , 4.4% of which was used in 2023; 743 Gt CO 2 remains that could be used within 18.6 years.

Other estimates of the remaining carbon budget imply much lower permissible emissions 7 . Under those tighter constraints, only 250 Gt CO 2 or 60 Gt CO 2 remain from January 2023 to achieve the 1.5 °C target at 50% and 66% likelihood, respectively. Accordingly, they convey a more dire timeline. Focusing on the 66% scenario to facilitate comparison with the IPCC likelihoods above, 2023 emissions used 66.7% of the budget, leaving only 20 GtCO 2 ; at the current pace, the entire 1.5 °C target could be depleted halfway through 2024. By comparison, 1,200 Gt CO 2 or 940 Gt CO 2 remains to constrain warming to 2 °C at 50% and 66% likelihood, respectively. For the 66% scenario, 2023 emissions used 4.2% of the budget, leaving 900 Gt CO 2 , which could be diminished within 22.6 years.

Detailed and near-real-time monitoring of CO 2 emissions since 2019 has enabled timely insights into changes in CO 2 emissions worldwide. In 2023, global annual emissions reached an all-time high of 35.8 Gt CO 2 , which reflects a very slight increase of 0.1% year-on-year. While these estimates indicate that post-pandemic emissions growth is slowing, there is not yet convincing evidence of a peak in global emissions — CO 2 emissions continue to rise, particularly in China, India and Russia. Given dwindling carbon budgets to constrain warming to 1.5 °C — the threshold above which climate impacts will become even more disastrous — the absence of a clear downward trend in emissions is troubling. The window of opportunity to meet the most ambitious international climate goals is rapidly closing. Meeting such goals would entail nations accelerating their decarbonization efforts and embracing the consensus from COP28 to “transition away from all fossil fuels in energy systems” as quickly as possible. This call to action is particularly pressing for countries with energy systems heavily reliant on coal, like China, India and Russia, where power generation accounts for approximately half of national carbon emissions. Transitioning these countries’ power sectors away from coal is critical for international climate mitigation efforts. Continued monitoring of global and national carbon emissions could be instrumental in evaluating the efficacy of these efforts.
