The Impact of Technology at Home

The Impact of Technology at Home

In this article:

The positive aspects of technology.

  • The negative aspects of technology

Tech trends transforming our homes

Tech trends in the home inspection industry, how modern technology benefits home inspectors.

Technology has become an essential part of our life. Today, it’s hard to imagine your daily routine without digital devices. Most people use them for basic activities like cooking, shopping, and working. Even outside the home, technology has an  enormous impact  on society. We use it to plan how cities are built, and how apartment buildings and homes are laid out. We even use it to buy and move into homes and make them our own.

Despite all the good, there are also some drawbacks to these  technological advances .

Recent news has introduced key concerns about how reliant we are on technology for even the most simple tasks. Technology is in almost every room at home and helps with most tasks we do on a regular basis.

Reduced privacy, addiction, and social isolation are among the adverse effects of technology. According to the National Library of Medicine, technology even causes reduced physical activity.

Despite the adverse effects, it’s hard to deny that technology has improved our lives in many ways.

Improved communication

Technological advances eliminated distance and time barriers in communication. Now we can conduct videoconferences, and receive instant messages.

Technology also facilitates learning communication skill improvement. With technology being in most office work environments, employees must learn  digital communication . They also have to ensure that they stay up-to-date on any company announcements that are often sent digitally.

Widespread adoption

Technology is more integrated into our daily lives than ever before.

It means that people of all demographic groups must adapt to the new situation. More young children use devices daily. According to Pew Research Center, parents with a child aged 9 to 11 are more likely to say their child engages with a smartphone (67 percent). That’s compared with parents with a child aged 5 to 8 (59 percent) or age two or younger (49 percent).

The use of technology has also grown among seniors, over the last decade, according to a new analysis that  Pew Research  conducted in 2021.

The survey found that 96 percent of 18 to 29-year-olds own a smartphone. That compares with 61 percent of those 65 and older, a 35 percentage point difference. The gap has decreased from 53 points in 2012.

Health tracking

Health tracking is a collection of data related to your health. Technology helps us to keep track of our health, from wristbands to smartphone apps.

Many apps track weight, physical activity, calorie consumption, and sleep patterns. Tech companies like Apple and Fitbit have also developed wearable electronic devices. These devices can measure your daily physical activity and provide reminders for exercises.

Health tracking exists in many forms, and you can choose from many devices for your taste, need, and budget.

The negative aspects of technology

Many people can’t imagine their daily lives without technology. As many of us depend on digital devices for our work and daily activities, it can be hard to see its negative impacts.

Technology makes our lives easier, but it also has negative impacts, according to experts. For example, using digital devices can cause addiction and hurt communication skills.

Additionally, technology can affect our health and cause deterioration of vision and posture. It could affect people who spend too much time working on their computers.

When we spend hours on our devices, we spend time sitting. A sedentary lifestyle leads to an  increased risk  of many conditions and diseases. According to the World Health Organization, they include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

Decreased privacy

In the digital world, most things are shared electronically. It could be particularly problematic for your privacy. Social media is what many people use to keep up with their friends and family and keep track of global events. But social media can also lead to a loss of privacy. Users often need to  provide information  that they would not share otherwise.

Excessive exposure to technology

Overexposure to technology can be problematic for a few reasons. First, we can become reliant on electronics to do the most basic tasks and eventually be unable to do them ourselves. This is most obvious with skills like navigating with maps on the road. At home, more basic activities like cooking and cleaning are now taken over by slow cookers, pressure cookers, and robot vacuums.

Overuse of technology  can also take a toll on our mental health. Unfortunately, most people know all too well that internet-connected devices can lead to  attention strain  and other problems for young people. Many studies have also found a link between social media and mental health problems.

Technology addiction

Overuse of technology can also create addiction problems. In addition to the symptoms of simple technology overuse, a full-out addiction brings a whole host of other issues.

Technology addiction can take many forms. At home, this may look like excessive overuse of social media, online shopping, gaming, or computer work. Those with technology addiction can suffer from intense emotional and social issues, including depression, anxiety, loss of pleasure from other sources, and even placing technology over their own  physical safety .

Smart devices have moved from our palms to our homes. They have allowed us to create living spaces that continue to get more intuitive and save energy.

Smart home security system

A  smart home security  system allows an app to check and control your security devices. This system will enable you to check your home from anywhere to ensure it’s safe.

Smart home  security systems  come in various forms. They can be do-it-yourself kits or full-blown setups that include professional installation.

Voice-activated control platforms

Voice-activated control platforms allow consumers to control the light and adjust the temperature. There are many  practical automation ideas  to make your life simpler.

Amazon Echo, Apple’s Siri, and Google Assistant use voice recognition to answer questions. A user controls electronic devices by verbal commands.

Remote learning with the help of technology

Online courses.

Online courses have become popular, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused remote shift work.

More than 20 million new learners registered for courses in 2021, according to the Coursera  2021 Impact Report . This number is equal to total growth in the three years pre-pandemic. Today you can learn many skills from your computer without leaving your home. Doing so is a great way to  boost your resume  and improve your job prospects.

Supports multimodal learning

The  American University School of Education  says that teachers can use engaging content to boost interest.

This also has ties to academic success. Curiosity helps students get a better understanding of math and reading concepts. Creating engaging content can involve the use of videos or podcasts.

Improves individualized learning

Many connect with friends and family over WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Zoom. Education has followed suit, as it became accessible for everyone with an Internet connection.

Many students can now adapt to learning with the help of digital tools. Remote learning allows for avoiding socio-economic barriers that often prevent education access. Teachers can create lessons based on student interests and strengths. And students can learn at their own pace.

Scientists found that remote students do better in exams than traditional classroom students.

Technology has changed the home industry’s work. From virtual walkthroughs to home inspections, it’s now ingrained in the industry.

Virtual walkthroughs

Virtual walkthroughs have become more popular because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the trend is here to stay. Many home inspection companies have adapted to virtual inspections through FaceTime and GoogleDuo.

Virtual walkthroughs eliminated the need for buyers and sellers to be present during a home inspection.

Inspectors can record themselves, so their clients can watch the home inspection process in real-time. Home inspectors can also video chat with a buyer and a seller during a home inspection.

Home inspection software

Home inspection software allows home inspectors to streamline scheduling, billing, and bookkeeping. While home inspectors used to need different tools for these tasks, now they can do them in one centralized location.

Using home inspection software allows for saving time and money. You can skip many apps and programs because software offers all these functions.

ISN  is one of the most popular options among home inspectors, as it provides the best scheduling system. It allows for easy customization of forms and quick access to all data.

Mobile apps

The technology allows home inspectors to do most of the work on a tablet or smartphone. Home inspectors can use apps to write reports, track expenses, communicate with customers, and access data on the go. ISN software has an app from which home inspectors can run their businesses.

Home inspectors use special tools to detect moisture, identify leaks, foundation cracks, and spot mold.

Standard home inspections don’t include asbestos or radon testing. They also don’t cover air quality testing. You need to hire a specialist to check your house for the presence of radon or asbestos.

Inspectors use special equipment to detect radon’s presence in a home and determine the scope of the problem.

There are two groups of  radon devices  for short-term testing. Passive devices are alpha track detectors and charcoal canisters. Active devices are continuous radon monitors (CRMs) and continuous working level monitors.

Air Quality

Air quality testing could need several tools, depending on the signs of the problem. Specialists use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air sampling. It allows us to check the air quality inside the house and find problems like mold or moisture.

Home professionals need to measure the humidity level to detect mold. During the process, they use moisture meters, thermal cameras, hygrometers, particle scanners, and different air sampling tools. Surface tests can also help to detect moisture in a specific area.

Water damage

A moisture meter is one of the most common tools for checking the property for water damage. They can’t diagnose the problem, only determine the presence of moisture.

A moisture meter can help decide whether you need to investigate the area more. If your meter displays a high reading, you may want to inspect that area further and look for signs of discoloration and stains.

The Role of Technology in Education

Introduction.

Nearly every part of our lives has been transformed by technology, and education is no different. Today's students have greater access to knowledge, opportunities, and resources than ever before, and technology is becoming a more significant part of their educational experience. Technology is transforming how we think about education and creating new opportunities for learners of all ages, from online courses and virtual classrooms to instructional applications and augmented reality.

Technology's Benefits for Education

The capacity to tailor learning is one of technology's most significant benefits in education. Students may customize their education to meet their unique needs and interests since they can access online information and tools.

For instance, people can enroll in online classes on topics they are interested in, get tailored feedback on their work, and engage in virtual discussions with peers and subject matter experts worldwide. As a result, pupils are better able to acquire and develop the abilities and information necessary for success.

Challenges and Concerns

Despite the numerous advantages of technology in education, there are also obstacles and considerations to consider. One issue is the growing reliance on technology and the possibility that pupils would become overly dependent on it. This might result in a lack of critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, as students may become passive learners who only follow instructions and rely on technology to complete their assignments.

Another obstacle is the digital divide between those who have access to technology and those who do not. This division can exacerbate the achievement gap between pupils and produce uneven educational and professional growth chances. To reduce these consequences, all students must have access to the technology and resources necessary for success.

In conclusion, technology is rapidly becoming an integral part of the classroom experience and has the potential to alter the way we learn radically.

Technology can help students flourish and realize their full potential by giving them access to individualized instruction, tools, and opportunities. While the benefits of technology in the classroom are undeniable, it's crucial to be mindful of the risks and take precautions to guarantee that all kids have access to the tools they need to thrive.

The Influence of Technology On Personal Relationships And Communication

Technological advancements have profoundly altered how individuals connect and exchange information. It has changed the world in many ways in only a few decades. Because of the rise of the internet and various social media sites, maintaining relationships with people from all walks of life is now simpler than ever.

However, concerns about how these developments may affect interpersonal connections and dialogue are inevitable in an era of rapid technological growth. In this piece, we'll discuss how the prevalence of digital media has altered our interpersonal connections and the language we use to express ourselves.

Direct Effect on Direct Interaction:

The disruption of face-to-face communication is a particularly stark example of how technology has impacted human connections. The quality of interpersonal connections has suffered due to people's growing preference for digital over human communication. Technology has been demonstrated to reduce the usage of nonverbal signs such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and other indicators of emotional investment in the connection.

Positive Impact on Long-Distance Relationships:

Yet there are positives to be found as well. Long-distance relationships have also benefited from technological advancements. The development of technologies such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and social media has made it possible for individuals to keep in touch with distant loved ones. It has become simpler for individuals to stay in touch and feel connected despite geographical distance.

The Effects of Social Media on Personal Connections:

The widespread use of social media has had far-reaching consequences, especially on the quality of interpersonal interactions. Social media has positive and harmful effects on relationships since it allows people to keep in touch and share life's milestones.

Unfortunately, social media has made it all too easy to compare oneself to others, which may lead to emotions of jealousy and a general decline in confidence. Furthermore, social media might cause people to have inflated expectations of themselves and their relationships.

A Personal Perspective on the Intersection of Technology and Romance

Technological advancements have also altered physical touch and closeness. Virtual reality and other technologies have allowed people to feel physical contact and familiarity in a digital setting. This might be a promising breakthrough, but it has some potential downsides.

Experts are concerned that people's growing dependence on technology for intimacy may lead to less time spent communicating face-to-face and less emphasis on physical contact, both of which are important for maintaining good relationships.

In conclusion, technological advancements have significantly affected the quality of interpersonal connections and the exchange of information. Even though technology has made it simpler to maintain personal relationships, it has chilled interpersonal interactions between people.

Keeping tabs on how technology is changing our lives and making adjustments as necessary is essential as we move forward. Boundaries and prioritizing in-person conversation and physical touch in close relationships may help reduce the harm it causes.

The Security and Privacy Implications of Increased Technology Use and Data Collection

The fast development of technology over the past few decades has made its way into every aspect of our life. Technology has improved many facets of our life, from communication to commerce. However, significant privacy and security problems have emerged due to the broad adoption of technology. In this essay, we'll look at how the widespread use of technological solutions and the subsequent explosion in collected data affects our right to privacy and security.

Data Mining and Privacy Concerns

Risk of Cyber Attacks and Data Loss

The Widespread Use of Encryption and Other Safety Mechanisms

The Privacy and Security of the Future in a Globalized Information Age

Obtaining and Using Individual Information

The acquisition and use of private information is a significant cause for privacy alarm in the digital age. Data about their customers' online habits, interests, and personal information is a valuable commodity for many internet firms. Besides tailored advertising, this information may be used for other, less desirable things like identity theft or cyber assaults.

Moreover, many individuals need to be made aware of what data is being gathered from them or how it is being utilized because of the lack of transparency around gathering personal information. Privacy and data security have become increasingly contentious as a result.

Data breaches and other forms of cyber-attack pose a severe risk.

The risk of cyber assaults and data breaches is another big issue of worry. More people are using more devices, which means more opportunities for cybercriminals to steal private information like credit card numbers and other identifying data. This may cause monetary damages and harm one's reputation or identity.

Many high-profile data breaches have occurred in recent years, exposing the personal information of millions of individuals and raising serious concerns about the safety of this information. Companies and governments have responded to this problem by adopting new security methods like encryption and multi-factor authentication.

Many businesses now use encryption and other security measures to protect themselves from cybercriminals and data thieves. Encryption keeps sensitive information hidden by encoding it so that only those possessing the corresponding key can decipher it. This prevents private information like bank account numbers or social security numbers from falling into the wrong hands.

Firewalls, virus scanners, and two-factor authentication are all additional security precautions that may be used with encryption. While these safeguards do much to stave against cyber assaults, they are not entirely impregnable, and data breaches are still possible.

The Future of Privacy and Security in a Technologically Advanced World

There's little doubt that concerns about privacy and security will persist even as technology improves. There must be strict safeguards to secure people's private information as more and more of it is transferred and kept digitally. To achieve this goal, it may be necessary to implement novel technologies and heightened levels of protection and to revise the rules and regulations regulating the collection and storage of private information.

Individuals and businesses are understandably concerned about the security and privacy consequences of widespread technological use and data collecting. There are numerous obstacles to overcome in a society where technology plays an increasingly important role, from acquiring and using personal data to the risk of cyber-attacks and data breaches. Band 9 essay sample: Advantages and disadvantages of working from home

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published November 16, 2015 · Updated November 16, 2015

Essay topic

Modern technology, such as personal computers and the internet, has made it possible for many people to work from their home. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this situation?

Sample essay

Technology has changed the way we work. The advent of the internet and networking solutions has made it possible for people to work from their home instead of their offices. In my opinion, this development has more advantages than disadvantages.

Perhaps the biggest advantage is that people can work flexible hours. This arrangement is especially helpful for women who have young children. Many of them who quit their job after the birth of their children are now back in the job market. Obviously, they are looking for positions that allow them to work from their homes.

Male employees also benefit from working from home. In big cities like Mumbai or Bangalore, people spend hours commuting to work and home. If they get an opportunity to work from their home, they can save a lot of time. This will improve their work-life balance and overall sense of wellbeing. Employers also benefit from this arrangement. When employees work from their homes, the cost of running the business comes down. Working from home also saves valuable resources. Less commuting means less travel. This can result in significant fuel savings and cleaner air.

There are a few challenges as well. Employees working from home may have difficulty building a rapport with others in their team. In addition, they may find it difficult to get instant support when problems arise. However, an efficient management can easily take care of these problems.

To conclude, there are several benefits to working from home. Many employers have already realized this and started encouraging their workers to work from home. In the future, we will certainly have more organizations taking this route.

With many movies that show robots taking over the world, people may have a little bit of fear of artificial intelligence. In your essay, you can explore whether AI is safe technology or not. You can explore the modern gadgets that have AI and are already a part of people’s lives, and you can discuss the potential ethics of improving artificial intelligence and machine learning technology.

If you decide that artificial intelligence can be safe, look at ways to protect humans from technology as it develops. If you decide that it is risky, consider what people can do to protect themselves from the existing AI. Consider concluding that artificial intelligence is already here, and the real answer to this question is what can we do to keep it safe. You might also be interested in these essays about video games .

Are video games a waste of time, or do they have potential benefits? You may be surprised to know that many video games actually have cognitive benefits . They can improve attention span, decision-making skills, problem-solving skills, and overall learning.

This topic is a great persuasive essay because it goes against most people’s thinking. In your essay, show some of the benefits of gaming, and how people can choose games that will have this cognitive benefit.

Essays About Technology: How technological advancement is improving daily life?

Think about your average day. How many times do you rely on technology? Chances are, the number is quite high. Do those technologies improve your daily life?

The impact of technology on daily life can be quite positive. It can make simple tasks easier, faster, and more efficient. Explore how technology makes your everyday life easier in this easy.

Social networking and social media sites are supposed to keep people more connected, but it is actually making communication more difficult. Many people are becoming so connected to social media and the instant feedback it provides that they struggle to stay connected during in-person conversations . You can explore this phenomenon in your essay.

Not only that, but modern technology involves a lot of texting and typed conversations. These can be difficult to read because they do not contain facial expressions or tone of voice. This fact leads to miscommunications regularly, and you can weave this into your essay as well.

More and more kids are carrying cell phones today than ever before and at younger ages. How is this impact them on the educational side? Is it making it easier or harder for kids to learn?

On the one hand, smartphones make it easier for students and teachers to stay connected, and phones can also be a research tool to access study materials when writing a research paper or working on another project. On the other hand, mobile phones reduce attention spans and impair learning during educational lectures, so this can hurt educational outcomes. Explore the positive and negative sides of smartphones in the classroom in your essay.

Does technological progress have a positive or negative effect on the natural world? You will find research on both sides of this question, so consider this as you write your research paper. Some technology today focuses on preserving and protecting our natural resources, but some technology actually creates more emissions and pollution that impact the environment negatively.

In this essay, you can also discuss how to choose new technology that will positively impact the environment. Remember, technology is a central part of 21st-century life, so the best solution to this question is finding technology that positively impacts nature.

Social media is supposed to be fun and relaxing, but it actually negatively impacts human life and relationships. In your technology essay, you can explore how social media and depression, anxiety, and loneliness are linked . The more time people spend on screens, the less happy they are with life.

Yet social media is here to stay, so what can you do? In your essay, consider exploring ways to set up boundaries around social media use, so that people can enjoy this aspect of technology without damaging their mental health.

Technology has clearly defined negative effects, but the importance of technology can’t be ignored. These negative effects don’t mean you need to throw away your iPhone and laptop computer. Yet balance is necessary.

So how can people strike a balance? Your essay can discuss how technology should be a “useful servant,” not a dictator. People can use technology more effectively when viewing technology as something that helps go about daily life more conveniently.

More and more daily activities can be automated using modern technology. Your essay can discuss whether you view this as a good thing, or a bad thing, for people. Are we forgetting how to do things for ourselves when we rely on technology to do it all for us, or is his simply a way to make life easier, so we can focus on less mundane tasks.

Your essay needs to look at automation and determine if it helps or hurts people. Then, back up your answer with your research to show why it was what you chose.

The impact of technology on communication has much research behind it, and much of that impact is negative. However, for non-verbal individuals, communication technology can be a huge benefit. Communication devices can give these individuals the ability to communicate their needs and wants with family members, significantly improving their quality of life.

This informative essay topic will look at what communication devices are and how they work. It will discuss the positive effects of these devices on non-verbal individuals. You can even look at the future of communication technology for this particular population of people.

Virtual reality is a fun video game, but it can also have an impact on education . With virtual reality, teachers can take students to far-off places and help them experience those locations more intimately than simply with pictures or video. On the college level, virtual reality can assist with letting people practice hands-on procedures, like delicate surgeries in medical school, without risk.

Your essay can explore different uses of virtual reality in the classroom. You can indicate whether or not you think this is a positive change. However, like all technology, there are potential drawbacks to this as well. You may find teachers fighting against VR in the classroom because they fear being replaced by technology, so you can also address this side of the technology.

Technological innovation is not really new. It was technology that created the atmosphere for the Industrial Revolution. Steam engines, electricity, and communications technology all came into the scene during the 1800s, and each of these contributed to the Industrial Revolution.

Your essay can explore different technologies that led to the Industrial Revolution. You can explain why these technologies transformed the economic scenario to change the face of the economy.

This essay question has multiple answers. Modern technology has the ability to hurt and help your quality of life. Explore both of these in your essay to create a well-rounded argument.

For example, modern technology can reduce the amount of work people have to do each day. This can improve the quality of life by making work more efficient. However, it can make people lazy, which can hurt your quality of life. Explore examples like this, and then draw a conclusion about whether tech helps or hurts.

Cell phone addiction occurs when people turn to the cell phone for an endorphin or dopamine fix. The instant feedback that people get from social media and other apps can be addicting. Explore this fact in your essay, and then discuss whether or not this is dangerous.

Why is it dangerous to use a cell phone excessively? At what point does cell phone use become dangerously addictive? These are the questions you can answer in your essay as you write about this important topic. You can also discuss the warning signs of cell phone addiction and when treatment is necessary.

Artificial intelligence is a definite technological advancement, but some have argued it is the last human invention. When AI becomes smart enough, it may replace the work of humans and drive innovation… or will it?

Use your essay to discuss this theory and decide if you agree with it, or not. Will AI replace the need for innovation from people, or will there always be a human component to innovation? Answer these questions, and back the answers with research, as you craft your essay.

In the transportation industry, technology is taking center stage too. From the complex computers, GPS, and safety systems on vehicles to the advent of self-driving vehicles, innovation keeps coming to this industry. You can discuss some of these innovations in your technology essay.

You can also explore whether these technological advancements have helped or hurt the safety of drivers. Do GPS and infotainment systems distract drivers or keep them safer? The answers to these questions can make an interesting essay.

Working From Home Essay

In this working from home essay for IELTS you have to discuss whether you think that working from home has more advantages or disadvantages.

This was a recent question from the test. Take a look at the essay question:

These days, many people have their own computer and telephone, so it is quite easy for them to do their job at home.

Does working at home have more advantages or more disadvantages?

In this essay you have the following task:

  • Does working at home have more advantages or disadvantages?

technology at home essay

This suggests that there are both pros and cons of working from home as you are asked which there are more of.

So in your answer to this working from home essay it's better to discuss both but write more about the side that you think there are more of so that the essay content reflects your opinion.

Try then to think of one reason for one side of the argument and two for the other side.

Organisation

It's usual in academic writing to start with the opinion that is the one you don't support so start with that one.

So based on this, the sample working from home essay is organised as follows:

  • Have more control of time ( advantage)
  • Loneliness (disadvantage)
  • Less influence in the company ( disadvantage)

So in this case, the writer thinks of course that there are more disadvantages and this should be clearly stated when you give your opinion in the introduction and / or conclusion.

Now take a look at the model answer.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

In the present age it is common for people to work from home because of advances in technology. On balance, I would argue that this has more negative impacts than positive.

One advantage of working from home is the freedom it provides. Home workers can organise their work around their home life as they can stop or start work as they please, and thus if, for example, they have children, they can easily arrange to take them and pick them up from school. They can also undertake any other tasks that they need to do during the day, such as doing the laundry or shopping, and then finish work later. Overall then, employees have more control over their lives.

Despite these positive factors, however, there are a number of  disadvantages. The first of these is the fact that those who work at home nearly all the time will not be mixing with colleagues. When people are at work, they are always surrounded by others, but at home, an employee is likely to be alone most the time. This may lead to feelings of loneliness due to a lack of interaction.

Another drawback is the fact that one may have less influence in the company. It is often the case that important decisions arise on the spur of the moment as unexpected issues arise. If an employee is not there, others may have to step in. If this occurs on a regular basis, the employees contribution to the company may decline, meaning a higher probability of getting overlooked for things such as promotion.

In conclusion, although there are positives and negatives related to working from home, there are more negative impacts. Employees should therefore consider carefully whether working from home is the best choice.

(293 Words)

This working from home essay would get a high score as it meets the requirements of the task, which is to discuss the pros and cons of working from home and state which there are more of.

It is also coherent and cohesive, with paragraphing used to good effect and good linking within and between sentences.

There is a good range of lexis (vocabulary) in the essay and it is used accurately with good collocations.

There is also a good mix of complex sentences and structures and again the grammatical accuracy is very good.

How to Write an Argumentative Essay About Technology?

Now you know what argumentative essays about technology are and why they're important?

Let's look at how to write a compelling argument.

Pick a Title

The title of your essay should capture the attention of your reader and summarize the main points of your argument.

Think carefully about how you want to frame your argument in order to create an effective title. It should be short and catchy, but also accurately reflect the main arguments or ideas in your essay.

Form an Outline

After deciding on a title for your essay, it’s important to form an outline of the key points and arguments you will make in each paragraph. This will help keep you organized during the writing process and ensure that all of your ideas are connected.

Make sure there is good flow between each section so that readers can follow along easily.

Here is an outline template for argumentative essay about technology:

Write an Introduction

Your introduction is where you set up the context for your essay and explain what it is that you will be arguing throughout the rest of the text.

Include relevant background information, as well as any interesting facts or anecdotes that could help engage readers from the beginning.

Be sure to end with a thesis statement that clearly lays out which side you are taking in this debate and what evidence will be used to support it.

Write Body Paragraphs

Your body paragraphs are where most of your research comes into play!

Ensure these paragraphs contain detailed evidence from reliable sources that supports each point being made in each paragraph.

Additionally, be sure to use transition words throughout these sections so that readers can follow along easily from one point to another.

Write a Conclusion

Your conclusion should briefly outline the key points and evidence used throughout your paper. While reiterating why this particular topic is so important and relevant today.

Your conclusion should leave readers with something thought-provoking!

Perhaps something they hadn’t considered before rather than just summarizing everything they have already read in previous paragraphs.

The questions around general interest topics are mostly repeated by changing the question pattern and wording. Success in IELTS task 2 is purely based on technique and practice. These tips and samples of   IELTS essays on modern technology   will help aspirants prepare for the writing task.

Modern technologies have boosted the agricultural sector. give your opinion., tips to write a winning essay, popular study abroad destinations, essay on modern technology: sample 1, modern technology is a gift of god. discuss the advantages and disadvantages. .

It was not very long ago when we had to actually pull out a large folded map to get directions while traveling. Nowadays, we click on Google Maps or ask Siri and we can access the entire map on our devices. The modern generation is quite technical and we can access any information with ease. Now, we like everything to be 'quick'. The days of searching for a book in the library are gone. The world is at our fingertips with the help of smartphones, the internet, technology, and various smart devices. Throughout the day, we use technologies to accomplish our daily tasks and assist in our routine activities.

However, it is disheartening that modern technology has changed the way societies were tied to each other. Bonds were emotional and genuine, cultural aspects were there, and humans were more physically active. These shiny pieces of tech do have some drawbacks. Let us take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of modern technology.

Modern technologies have helped us stay connected with people from all across the world. We have taken to technology like fish to water and it has become very difficult to survive without it.

How many lives have been saved so far with the help of modern medical technologies? Well, the numbers are uncountable. Modern equipment, technology, and better healthcare facilities have helped humans defeat chronic and acute health crises.

Secondly, satellite communications continuously broadcast data around the globe to our computers and handheld devices. We get to watch our favorite shows, movies, news; know the weather conditions, forthcoming disasters, and even trade-in stock markets.

Thirdly, the education system has improved. It is due to modern technology that the students were able to study from home during the pandemic. Modern technologies have helped mankind with a better standard of living. Innovative technologies for household chores and modern facilities have made a significant contribution towards better living conditions. At times, it seems like a gift of god for the betterment of mankind. But it has its drawbacks too.

Ours is a technology-dominated society. Even the simplest of things are done with the help of a machine or devices. Eventually, everything seems artificial. Below are some of the threats that individuals need to be careful of.

Simply put, even the things that need little effort are now being done with the help of technology. We prefer to read on a light-emitting device and instead of books. We prefer to drive instead of walking a mile. Our social skills are also getting compromised as we believe in communication through online modes. Gone are the days when we used to understand non-verbal cues more than the texts.

What impact does it have on our minds? Will technologies like AI and ML replace manpower in the coming years? Maybe! Without realizing the extent of dependency and the cons associated with it, we are blindly adopting modern tech to make life easier. It makes everything virtual and impairs the power of real human interaction. We tend to find more value in communication through a device rather than face-to-face interaction.

By making things easier, modern technologies have also invited a lot of crimes. Modern technologies open more opportunities for crime. Smart devices and technological advancements are being used in negative ways too. Many illegal activities are carried out online through social media platforms, targeting the young generation.

Technological dependency has made the lifestyle sluggish and costly too. Our standard of living is getting higher and higher with more expensive technologies coming into our day-to-day lives. Hence, we end up taking the massive burden to get more materialistic happiness.

Technology is changing the way we used to live. The famous saying 'technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master' needs to be implemented in our lives. Nowadays, it is apparent that we are not controlling our smart devices, but our devices are controlling us. Modern technologies have both advantages and disadvantages to offer to mankind, it depends upon how sensibly we embrace them.

IELTS Essay on Modern Technology: Sample 2

Agriculture & Food Production is one domain which has been in dire need of innovation and technological advancement. Climatic change, low awareness among farmers, natural hazards, resource depletion, floods, and opaque supply chains have led to low productivity and profitability in farming. Modern technologies have developed a digital agricultural presence, where the high yield makes the country self-sustaining. Modern technologies like artificial intelligence, GIS Software, big data, applications, sensors, and cloud computing have boosted agricultural productivity. In my opinion, the incorporation of modern technologies has been a blessing to the agricultural sector.

Modern technologies in precision agriculture have been developing new ways of managing farms, treatment of crops, and food systems. Digital presence has made agriculture profitable, safe, and effective. Modern farms get significant benefits from digital agriculture. Let us check some of the ways modern technologies have helped agriculture.

Firstly, GIS Software or Geographic Information System is a digital technology that helps the farmers stay alert about the changes that are taking place in the farms like plant health, crop yield, changes in moisture, and temperature. The GPS integrated software applications enable pesticide optimization and fertilizer control so that the farmers can treat a specific affected area and not the entire farm. This helps in the conservation of time, manpower, and capital.

Secondly, drones offer data from the sky. It takes images of the large farmlands with high precision. Several conditions like crop height, mass cultivation, soil erosion, waterlogging, and level of precipitation can be traced. These drones help the farmers monitor each part of the land effectively. Within a short time frame, drones can offer every information and data about a large farm. Various hazards are prevented and decision-making has become easier with the application of drones in farming.

Thirdly, mobile applications have kept the entire agricultural supply chain transparent and in proper coordination. Through these mobile applications, retailers, farmers, sellers, and suppliers can communicate with one another and receive all the latest updates and insights. Mobile applications help in decision-making and awareness increase, which results in productivity, transparency, and profitability.

Fourthly, agriculture has incorporated Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning to produce healthy crops, organize data for farmers, control pests, workload management, and decision-making throughout the agricultural supply chain. Data is important. AI and ML process the unstructured data into a useful insight that can be used to make better decisions regarding the productivity of agriculture. Artificial Intelligence makes the farmers aware of the weather forecasting so that they sow and reap the crops accordingly to reap maximum yield.

Simply put, modern technologies are not only automating the entire agricultural sector but also enabling precise cultivation with high productivity and sustainability. The concerns of labor, resource depletion, soil health, data, and opaque supply chain in agriculture are slowly being eradicated with modern technology.

8 Tech Skills Every Student Should Have, According to Educators

A student and teacher navigate the pitfalls of a digital world.

  • Share article

Today’s students have grown up with smartphones, tablets, and virtual assistants. Most can comfortably navigate any new app or digital device and outsmart parental controls. That’s why adults often turn to them to understand how to use new technologies.

But educators have noticed that many students are missing basic technology skills and media literacy—such as typing on a keyboard, searching the web, determining if an online source is legitimate, or writing an effective email message—which are necessary for success, not just in school and careers, but in their personal lives too, experts say.

“In our digital classrooms, it’s all about giving students the tools they need to navigate and shape the world of tomorrow,” said Dyane Smokorowski, the digital literacy coordinator for the Wichita school district in Kansas. “By weaving these tech skills into our teaching, we’re unlocking doors for our students to a future filled with possibilities.”

Education Week asked educators on Facebook, LinkedIn, and X what tech skills every student should have. Here’s what they said:

1. Basic Computer Skills

Students should have foundational computer knowledge and skills, such as how to turn on a desktop computer (yes, some respondents noted this!), how to open a file with the right program, how to find a document, and how to save files on an external hard drive. They also mentioned that students should develop typing skills if they are going to be using computer keyboards regularly.

2. Digital Communication Skills

Educators said it’s important for students to be able to communicate their ideas clearly using technology, whether it’s through email, social media, video conference, or word-processing and presentation programs (like Google Docs or Microsoft PowerPoint). Students should also be able to work with others in a digital environment together in real time or collaborate at separate times with shared files.

3. Cybersecurity

Students need to have skills that will protect their sensitive information from cybercriminals, educators said, especially as cyberattacks become more sophisticated. They need to learn not to share personal information, should be able to recognize when a website is secure and legitimate, and know how to avoid email phishing attempts by hackers.

4. Media Literacy

Media literacy is about having the skills to access information, analyze and evaluate it, create content, and act on it using all forms of communication, whether it be through print, TV, or the internet. Ensuring students have this skill is even more important now with the rise of artificial intelligence and its ability to generate text, audio, images, and video, educators said. Students need to be able to think critically and evaluate the authenticity and reliability of any information they see and hear online.

5. Digital Citizenship

Similar to media literacy, digital citizenship is about teaching students how to use technology thoughtfully and empathetically. Students need to know how to be kind and respectful in online spaces, so that others feel safe and welcome to participate, educators said.

6. Research/Data Analysis

Having effective internet search skills is very important for students, according to educators. Students should be able to sift through the oceans of information available online and be able to analyze what’s valuable and worth using or sharing.

7. Problem-solving

Students should know how to use digital technology to find solutions to the world’s problems, educators said, whether it’s coding an app that will save lives or figuring out how to clean up the ocean. They should know how to troubleshoot problems, show persistence, and be able to learn from failures.

8. Creativity

Last but not least, students should have time for fun and games that will help foster their creative thinking skills. They need to learn to use digital tools with their imagination to express themselves and connect with others, educators said, whether it’s through digital art or podcasts or videos.

People are worried that AI will take everyone’s jobs. We’ve been here before.

In a 1938 article, MIT’s president argued that technical progress didn’t mean fewer jobs. He’s still right.

MIT Technology Review is celebrating our 125th anniversary with an online series that draws lessons for the future from our past coverage of technology.

It was 1938, and the pain of the Great Depression was still very real. Unemployment in the US was around 20%. Everyone was worried about jobs.

In 1930, the prominent British economist John Maynard Keynes had warned that we were “being afflicted with a new disease” called technological unemployment. Labor-saving advances, he wrote , were “outrunning the pace at which we can find new uses for labour.” There seemed to be examples everywhere. New machinery was transforming factories and farms. Mechanical switching being adopted by the nation’s telephone network was wiping out the need for local phone operators , one of the most common jobs for young American women in the early 20th century.

Were the impressive technological achievements that were making life easier for many also destroying jobs and wreaking havoc on the economy? To make sense of it all, Karl T. Compton , the president of MIT from 1930 to 1948 and one of the leading scientists of the day, wrote in the December 1938 issue of this publication about the “Bogey of Technological Unemployment.”

How, began Compton, should we think about the debate over technological unemployment—“the loss of work due to obsolescence of an industry or use of machines to replace workmen or increase their per capita production”? He then posed this question: “Are machines the genii which spring from Aladdin’s Lamp of Science to supply every need and desire of man, or are they Frankenstein monsters which will destroy man who created them?” Compton signaled that he’d take a more grounded view: “I shall only try to summarize the situation as I see it.”

His essay concisely framed the debate over jobs and technical progress in a way that remains relevant, especially given today’s fears over the impact of artificial intelligence. Impressive recent breakthroughs in generative AI, smart robots, and driverless cars are again leading many to worry that advanced technologies will replace human workers and decrease the overall demand for labor. Some leading Silicon Valley techno-optimists even postulate that we’re headed toward a jobless future where everything can be done by AI.

While today’s technologies certainly look very different from those of the 1930s, Compton’s article is a worthwhile reminder that worries over the future of jobs are not new and are best addressed by applying an understanding of economics, rather than conjuring up genies and monsters.

Uneven impacts

Compton drew a sharp distinction between the consequences of technological progress on “industry as a whole” and the effects, often painful, on individuals.

For “industry as a whole,” he concluded, “technological unemployment is a myth.” That’s because, he argued, technology "has created so many new industries” and has expanded the market for many items by “lowering the cost of production to make a price within reach of large masses of purchasers.” In short, technological advances had created more jobs overall. The argument—and the question of whether it is still true—remains pertinent in the age of AI.

Then Compton abruptly switched perspectives, acknowledging that for some workers and communities, “technological unemployment may be a very serious social problem, as in a town whose mill has had to shut down, or in a craft which has been superseded by a new art.”

Even those who agreed that jobs will come back in “the long run” were concerned that “displaced wage-earners must eat and care for their families ‘in the short run.’”

This analysis reconciled the reality all around—millions without jobs—with the promise of progress and the benefits of innovation. Compton, a physicist, was the first chair of a scientific advisory board formed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and he began his 1938 essay with a quote from the board’s 1935 report to the president: “That our national health, prosperity and pleasure largely depend upon science for their maintenance and their future improvement, no informed person would deny.”

Compton’s assertion that technical progress had produced a net gain in employment wasn’t without controversy. According to a New York Times article written in 1940 by Louis Stark , a leading labor journalist, Compton “clashed” with Roosevelt after the president told Congress, “We have not yet found a way to employ the surplus of our labor which the efficiency of our industrial processes has created.”

As Stark explained, the issue was whether “technological progress, by increasing the efficiency of our industrial processes, take[s] jobs away faster than it creates them.” Stark reported recently gathered data on the strong productivity gains from new machines and production processes in various sectors, including the cigar, rubber, and textile industries. In theory, as Compton argued, that meant more goods at a lower price, and—again in theory—more demand for these cheaper products, leading to more jobs. But as Stark explained, the worry was: How quickly would the increased productivity lead to those lower prices and greater demand?

As Stark put it, even those who agreed that jobs will come back in “the long run” were concerned that “displaced wage-earners must eat and care for their families ‘in the short run.’”

World War II soon meant there was no shortage of employment opportunities. But the job worries continued. In fact, while it has waxed and waned over the decades depending on the health of the economy, anxiety over technological unemployment has never gone away.

Automation and AI

Lessons for our current AI era can be drawn not just from the 1930s but also from the early 1960s. Unemployment was high. Some leading thinkers of the time claimed that automation and rapid productivity growth would outpace the demand for labor. In 1962, MIT Technology Review sought to debunk the panic with an essay by Robert Solow, an MIT economist who received the 1987 Nobel Prize for explaining the role of technology in economic growth and who died late last year at the age of 99.

1962 cartoon of Robert Solow walking past three scarecrows and whistling nonchalantly

In his piece, titled “Problems That Don’t Worry Me,” Solow scoffed at the idea that automation was leading to mass unemployment. Productivity growth between 1947 and 1960, he noted, had been around 3% a year. “That’s nothing to be sneezed at, but neither does it amount to a revolution,” he wrote. No great productivity boom meant there was no evidence of a second Industrial Revolution that "threatens catastrophic unemployment.” But, like Compton, Solow also acknowledged a different type of problem with the rapid technological changes: “certain specific kinds of labor … may become obsolete and command a suddenly lower price in the market … and the human cost can be very great.”

These days, the panic is over artificial intelligence and other advanced digital technologies. Like the 1930s and the early 1960s, the early 2010s were a time of high unemployment, in this case because the economy was struggling to recover from the 2007–’09 financial crisis. It was also a time of impressive new technologies. Smartphones were suddenly everywhere. Social media was taking off. There were glimpses of driverless cars and breakthroughs in AI. Could those advances be related to the lackluster demand for labor? Could they portend a jobless future?

Again, the debate played out in the pages of MIT Technology Review . In a story I wrote titled “ How Technology Is Destroying Jobs ,” economist Erik Brynjolfsson and his colleague Andrew McAfee argued that technological change was eliminating jobs faster than it was creating them. This wasn’t just about a mill shutting down. Rather, advanced digital technologies were leading to job losses across a broad swath of the economy, raising the specter once again of technological unemployment.

Like the 1930s and the early 1960s, the early 2010s were a time of high unemployment.

It’s difficult to pinpoint a single cause for something as complex as a dip in total employment—it could be just a result of sluggish economic growth. But it was becoming increasingly obvious, both in the data and in everyday observations, that new technologies were changing the types of jobs in demand—and while that was nothing new, the scope of the transition was troubling, and so was the speed at which it was happening. Industrial robots had killed off many well-paying manufacturing jobs in places like the Rust Belt, and now AI and other digital technologies were coming after clerical and office jobs—and even, it was feared, truck driving.

In his farewell speech before leaving office in January 2017, President Barack Obama spoke about “the relentless pace of automation that makes a lot of good middle-class jobs obsolete.” By that time, it was clear that Compton’s optimism needed to be rethought. Technical progress was not turning out to lead to inevitable job growth, and the pain was not limited to a few specific locations and industries.

Why Musk is wrong

In an interview late last year with the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, Elon Musk declared there will come a time when “no job is needed,” thanks to an AI “magic genie that can do everything you want.” Musk added that as a result, “we won’t have universal basic income, we’ll have universal high income”—apparently answering Compton’s rhetorical question about whether machines will be “the genii which … supply every need and desire of man.”

It might not be possible to prove Musk wrong, since he gave no timeline for his utopian prediction; in any case, how do you argue against the power of a magical genie? But the end-of-work meme is a distraction as we figure out the best way to use AI to expand the economy and create new jobs.

Breakthroughs in generative AI, such as ChatGPT and other large language models, will likely transform the economy and labor markets . But there’s no convincing evidence that we’re on a path to a jobless future. To paraphrase Solow, we should worry about that when there’s a problem to worry about.

Even a bullish estimate about the effects of generative AI by Goldman Sachs puts its impact on productivity growth at around 1.5% a year over the next 10 years. That, as Solow might say, is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s not going to end the need for workers. The Goldman Sachs report calculated that roughly two-thirds of US jobs are “exposed to some degree of automation by AI.” Yet this conclusion is often misinterpreted—it doesn’t mean all those jobs will be replaced. Rather, as the Goldman Sachs report notes, most of these positions are “only partially exposed to automation.” For many of these workers, AI will become part of the workday and won’t necessarily lead to layoffs.

The end-of-work meme is a distraction as we figure out the best way to use AI to expand the economy and create new jobs.

One critical wild card is how many new jobs will be created by AI even as existing ones disappear. Estimating such job creation is notoriously difficult. But MIT’s David Autor and his collaborators recently calculated that 60% of employment in 2018 was in types of jobs that didn’t exist before 1940 . One reason innovation has created so many new jobs is that it has increased the productivity of workers, augmenting their capabilities and expanding their potential to do new tasks. The bad news: this job creation is countered by the labor-destroying impact of automation when it’s used to simply replace workers. As Autor and his coauthors conclude, one of the key questions now is whether “automation is acceleratin g relative to augmentation, as many researchers and policymakers fear.”

In recent decades, companies have often used AI and advanced automation to slash jobs and cut costs. There’s no economic rule that innovation will in fact favor augmentation and job creation over this type of automation. But we have a choice going forward: we can use technology to simply replace workers, or we can use it to expand their skills and capabilities, leading to economic growth and new jobs.

One of the lasting strengths of Compton’s 1938 essay was his argument that companies needed to take responsibility for limiting the pain of any technological transition. His suggestions included “coöperation between industries of a community to synchronize layoffs in one company with new employment in another.” That might sound outdated in today’s global economy. But the underlying sentiment remains relevant: “The fundamental criterion for good management in this matter, as in every other, is that the predominant motive must not be quick profits but best ultimate service of the public.”

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Do We Rely On Technology Too Much

Is our dependence on technology too high.

We use technology for almost everything. From the moment we wake up, we check our phones, turn on lights, and use microwaves. At school, we learn with computers and tablets. Our parents work with the help of technology too. It seems like we can’t do much without it.

Technology in Daily Life

Think about how we talk to friends far away or find places without maps. We use apps and GPS. Even for fun, we play video games or watch shows online. Without these tech tools, we might feel lost.

Can We Live Without Technology?

It’s hard to imagine life without machines and gadgets. They make things easier and faster. But sometimes, they break or distract us. It’s important to learn how to do things on our own too, like solving math without a calculator.

Technology Balance

Using technology is not bad, but we should not forget to do things without it. Playing outside, reading books, and talking face to face are also important. Finding a balance is the key to not depending too much on technology.

250 Words Essay on Do We Rely On Technology Too Much

Our dependence on technology.

In today’s world, technology is everywhere. From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, we use various gadgets and machines. Think about it: alarms wake us up, phones connect us with friends, and computers help with school work. It seems like we cannot live without technology, but is this heavy reliance a good thing?

Let’s look at our daily routines. Many of us would be lost without our phones. They are not just for talking or texting anymore; they are our calendars, our cameras, and even our maps. When we want to know something, we don’t ask a person; we ask the internet. This shows how much we depend on technology for even the smallest tasks.

Technology in Schools

Schools are also filled with technology. Instead of chalkboards, many classrooms now have digital whiteboards. Books are often replaced by tablets or laptops. This can make learning more fun and interactive, but it also means students might not learn how to do things the old-fashioned way, like using a paper map or doing math without a calculator.

Is It Too Much?

So, do we rely on technology too much? It’s hard to say. Technology makes life easier and helps us do things faster. But it’s important to remember not to let it take over our lives. We should still know how to do things without it. Maybe sometimes, we should try to put the screens away and enjoy the world around us without any gadgets.

In conclusion, technology is a big part of our lives, but it’s good to take a break from it and make sure we can still do things on our own.

500 Words Essay on Do We Rely On Technology Too Much

Introduction to our use of technology.

In today’s world, technology is everywhere. From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, we use different kinds of gadgets and machines. Many people wonder if we depend on technology too much. This essay will look at various parts of our lives where technology plays a big role and discuss whether our reliance on it is too great.

Technology at Home

At home, we use technology a lot. Think about the kitchen appliances that cook our food, the TVs and computers we enjoy, and even the smart home devices that control the lights and temperature. These things make life easier and more comfortable. But if they stopped working, many of us wouldn’t know how to manage. For example, if the internet goes down, it can feel like the whole house stops. This shows that we might depend on technology more than we should for our daily comfort.

Technology in School

In schools, tablets and computers are common tools now. They help students learn in new and exciting ways. But what happens when these devices are not available? Some students might find it hard to learn without them because they are used to having information at their fingertips. It is important for students to also learn how to find information without the internet and to solve problems without a calculator.

Technology at Work

Workplaces have also changed a lot because of technology. Computers help us do our jobs faster and keep in touch with coworkers from around the world. This can be a good thing because it lets people work together even if they are far apart. But, when technology fails, work can come to a stop. This shows that many businesses rely heavily on technology and may struggle without it.

Technology for Fun

We also use technology for fun and to relax. Video games, social media, and online videos are a big part of how many people spend their free time. These activities can be good for relaxing, but if we spend too much time on them, we might miss out on other fun things like playing outside or reading books. It’s important to balance the time we spend with technology and the time we spend doing other activities.

Health and Technology

Technology has done amazing things for health care. It helps doctors diagnose and treat illnesses better than ever before. But some people worry that we trust technology too much for our health. They think we should also focus on eating healthy, exercising, and living a balanced life to stay well.

In conclusion, technology has a big role in our lives and can be very helpful. But it is true that we might rely on it too much sometimes. It’s important to remember how to do things without technology, to keep a good balance in our lives, and to make sure we can handle situations when technology is not available. By doing this, we can enjoy the benefits of technology without letting it control our lives.

Elon Musk’s brain implant company Neuralink has moved its legal corporate home from Delaware to Nevada after a Delaware judge struck down Musk’s $55.8 billion pay package as CEO of Tesla.

Neuralink, which has its physical headquarters in Fremont, California, became a Nevada company on Thursday, according to state records. Delaware records also list the company’s legal home as Nevada.

The move comes after Musk wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that shareholders of Austin-based Tesla would be asked to consider moving the company’s corporate registration to Texas.

“Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware,” he wrote in one post after the court ruling. He later added, “I recommend incorporating in Nevada or Texas if you prefer shareholders to decide matters.”

Legal experts say most corporations set up legal shop in Delaware because laws there favor corporations. “Delaware built its preferred state of incorporation business by being friendly to company management, not shareholders,” said Erik Gordon, a business and law professor at the University of Michigan.

On Jan. 30, Delaware Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick invalidated the pay package that Tesla established for Musk in 2018, ruling that the process was “flawed” and the price “unfair.” In her ruling, she called the package “the largest potential compensation opportunity ever observed in public markets by multiple orders of magnitude.”

McCormick’s ruling bumped Musk out of the top spot on the Forbes list of wealthiest people.

Musk, a co-founder of the privately held Neuralink, is listed as company president in Nevada documents. Messages were left Saturday seeking comment from Neuralink and Tesla.

McCormick determined that Tesla’s board lacked independence from Musk. His lawyers said the package needed to be rich to give Musk an incentive not to leave — a line of reasoning the judge shot down.

“Swept up by the rhetoric of ‘all upside,’ or perhaps starry eyed by Musk’s superstar appeal, the board never asked the $55.8 billion question: ‘Was the plan even necessary for Tesla to retain Musk and achieve its goals?’” McCormick wrote.

Musk’s fans argue that he shouldn’t be paid like other CEOs because he isn’t like other CEOs. He and Tesla are practically inseparable, so keeping him as CEO is key to the company’s growth. He built the company from an idea to the most valuable automaker in the world, last year selling more electric vehicles than any other company. His star power gets free publicity, so the company spends little on advertising. And he has forced the rest of the auto industry to accelerate plans for electric vehicles to counter Tesla’s phenomenal growth.

McCormick’s ruling came five years after shareholders filed a lawsuit accusing Musk and Tesla directors of breaching their duties and arguing that the pay package was a product of sham negotiations with directors who were not independent of him.

The defense countered that the pay plan was fairly negotiated by a compensation committee whose members were independent and had lofty performance milestones.

Musk wrote on X last month that the first human received an implant from Neuralink. The billionaire did not provide additional details about the patient.
