The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. Dissertations and theses are rigorous reports of original research written in support of academic degrees above the baccalaureate level. Although some countries use the term "thesis" to refer to material written for a doctorate, the term in this chapter is reserved for work at the master's level, while "dissertation" is used for the doctorate.

Citations to dissertations and theses are similar to the standard book, with the following important points:

  • With rare exceptions, dissertations have only one author. Most master's theses also have a single author, but occasionally will have two.
  • The place of publication for a thesis or dissertation is the city where the university or other institution granting the degree is located. Many dissertations, particularly those of US universities, do not state the place of publication. When this occurs, obtain the city name from another source and place it in square brackets.
  • The publisher is the university or other institution granting the degree.

The chief source for information about a dissertation or thesis is its title page. The back of the title page, called the verso page, and the cover are additional sources of authoritative information not found on the title page.

  • Examples of Citations to Parts of Dissertations and Theses

Rather than citing a dissertation or thesis as a whole, separately identified portions of them may be cited. Chapters, sections, tables, charts, graphs, photographs, appendixes, and the like are considered parts of dissertations/theses when they are written or compiled by the authors of the dissertation or thesis. In general, most modern texts have standardized to three types of parts: figures, tables, and appendixes. However, many other names may be found for parts.

Because a reference should start with the individual or organization with responsibility for the intellectual content of the publication, begin a reference to a part of a dissertation or thesis with the citation to the dissertation or thesis itself, then follow it with the information about the part. See Chapter 2C Parts of Books for further details on citing parts.

Medical texts frequently contain charts, figures, and other illustrative material that has been reproduced with permission from other sources. Do not cite these as parts using the instructions presented here. Consult the original publication and cite the particular item from there.

6.12: Revising a Thesis Statement

Your thesis statement will probably change as you write so that it reflects exactly what you discuss in your paper. Remember, you will begin with a working thesis statement, an indefinite statement that you make about your topic early in the writing process.

Working thesis statements will become stronger as you gather information and form new opinions and reasons for those opinions. Revisions will help you strengthen your thesis so that it matches what you have expressed in the body of your paper. See Table 6.4 for ways to remove irrelevant parts and revise your thesis.

Ask Questions about Your Thesis Statement

The best way to revise your thesis statement is to ask questions about it and then examine the answers to those questions. By challenging your own ideas and forming definite reasons for those ideas, you can move toward a more precise point of view, which you can then incorporate into your thesis statement.

Formal MD Thesis Requirement

All students at Yale School of Medicine engage in research and are required to write an MD thesis during medical school. The only exceptions are students who have earned a PhD degree in the health sciences before matriculation and students enrolled in Yale’s MD/PhD program. The YSM MD Thesis is under the governance of the EPCC, which meets regularly to recommend rules, regulations, and deadlines.

Thesis Deadlines for the 2023-2024 Academic Year

Md students:.

The Office of Student Research, in conjunction with the Dean’s Office, has established the following deadlines for theses submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation in May 2024. The deadlines ensure that (1) students have sufficient time to complete their theses; (2) that there is sufficient time for rigorous departmental review and subsequent revision by students before final approval. These deadlines are strictly followed. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their theses well before the Class of 2024 Thesis Deadlines provided below. This timeliness will provide students, advisors, and sponsoring departments sufficient time for useful review and revision. It should be recognized by all concerned that the integrity of the thesis requirement and effective, rigorous review requires adherence to these deadlines. OSR will hold periodic “Thesis Check-in Sessions” via zoom for the Class of 2024 and will send periodic reminder emails with more detailed instructions as these deadlines approach.

*Students missing the August 4th, January 19th, and/or March 29th deadlines will be referred to the Progress Committee to ensure they receive adequate support to make progress towards this graduation requirement. Students missing the January 19th and/or March 29th deadlines will be ineligible for thesis prizes at graduation.

Extensions beyond the above thesis deadlines will be granted only for special circumstances and must have the approval of the student’s thesis mentor/advisor, academic advisor, and the Departmental Thesis Chairperson . Students seeking an extension for the January 19, 2024, deadline must submit a Thesis Deadline Extension Request Form to their Academic Advisor, and the Departmental Thesis Chair, for approval. Students missing the August 4th, January 19th, and/or March 29th deadlines will be referred to the Progress Committee to ensure they receive adequate support to make progress towards this graduation requirement. In the event of an extension, if granted, the following ABSOLUTE Class of 2024 Thesis Extension Deadlines will apply:

*All late theses require an extension. The student must submit the Thesis Deadline Extension Request Form before January 19, 2024.

MD/MHS Students:

Consistent with degree requirements, MD/MHS students must present their thesis to their three-person committee prior to the January 19th deadline. Students are encouraged to start arranging the date of this committee meeting in the fall to avoid unanticipated delays.

A different process applies to students in the MD/PhD program. For students enrolled in the combined MD/PhD Program, the dissertation submitted to and approved by the Graduate School will satisfy the MD thesis requirement. Therefore, MD/PhD students who have already defended their dissertation and received their PhD should provide this information to OSR via email as soon as possible.

To ensure compliance with YSM graduation deadlines, MD/PhD students in the class of 2024 who have not defended and submitted their dissertation to the Graduate School by the October 1, 2023, deadline will need to submit a copy of their dissertation directly to OSR via the MD/PhD Box Upload Link by March 15, 2024. OSR will convene a committee to review the dissertation, obtain feedback, and provide approval for graduation. Please note that MD/PhD students must also defend and submit their dissertation to the Graduate School no later than March 15, 2024, to meet the Graduate School spring degree deadline for conferral of the PhD degree. MD/PhD students who have not yet defended their dissertation should provide this information to OSR. If there are any questions about the process, please contact the MD/PhD Office.

Financial support is not provided for writing the thesis.

Thesis Preparation and Approval

Preparation for thesis submission begins in the summer of the fourth year with the OSR leadership. At this time, timeline and practices are distributed via email and reviewed with students in class meetings. Because thesis approval is a lengthy process involving three levels of review, students are encouraged to manage their time well and start writing their first draft early in the fall semester of their final year of medical school. A suggested timeline is provided below.

July : Thesis deadlines are distributed via email to all students in the graduating class and an informational session is held. Students should be on track to complete their thesis research by mid-fall. Any student anticipating a challenge in this regard should contact the OSR as soon as possible. All students expecting to graduate in May of a given year must, provide the OSR with information regarding their thesis title and mentor/advisor. Students will receive an email from the OSR containing a Medtrics link requesting this information. The OSR will contact all thesis mentors/advisors to confirm this role and to provide information and expectations regarding the thesis process.

August – December : Students should be finalizing research and writing their thesis draft. As the semester progresses, activities should shift from the data generation/analysis to the writing of the actual thesis. Students should do their best to complete the first draft of the thesis by mid-late December. Because students are also involved in the residency application and interview process, they are discouraged from starting new projects at this time.

December – January : This period is devoted to reviewing and editing of thesis draft that is ultimately approved by their thesis mentor/advisor and submitted by the student to the Thesis Chair of their sponsoring department. The YSM thesis mentor/advisor will be asked to complete a thesis assessment that evaluates the student’s mastery of YSM’s research-related educational objectives and provides formative summative feedback to the student.

January – March : The Departmental Thesis Chair coordinates thesis review by external reviewers. An “external reviewer” is defined as an individual who is not directly involved in the project. This individual may be a Yale faculty member internal or external to YSM or may hold a faculty appointment at an outside institution. This reviewer is required to complete a thesis assessment and provide formative summative feedback, as well as recommendations for any required changes, to the thesis. Departmental Thesis Chairs review assessments, notify students of departmental approval, and transmit these approvals to the OSR.

March : Theses and their associated assessments undergo school-level review by the OSR. Students receive YSM approval of their thesis along with summative feedback obtained during the review process. Students incorporate any required changes into their thesis and upload to the Yale Medicine Digital Thesis Library/Eli Scholar via the ProQuest platform (see below).

April : The OSR confirms that theses have been deposited into the Yale Medicine Digital Thesis Library and the registrar receives the names of students who have completed the thesis requirement.

The central role of the medical student thesis is to assess student’s performance on the YSM’s research-related educational objectives. As such, all students are expected to produce an excellent piece of scholarly work. In recognition of these achievements, the OSR has worked to develop an award process that celebrates the wonderful research being done by our students without creating a competitive atmosphere surrounding the thesis. Hence, thesis awards are based on competency-based assessments submitted by thesis mentors/advisors and reviewers during the approval process, and internal review of the final thesis that was deposited into the Yale Medicine Digital Thesis Library. Consistent with all other graduation prizes, YSM MD Thesis Awards will remain confidential until they are announced in the YSM Commencement Program on May 20, 2024. While some departments may elect to confer thesis “honors” based upon their own internal review, this recognition is distinct from YSM graduation prizes and is not under OSR’s purview.

How to write a personal statement for medical school

Undoubtedly, the medical school personal statement, whether for AAMC, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS, is no easy feat. My best advice for students on how to write their personal statement for medical school is to tell me your story. After reading a multitude of personal statements, I have learned that no two stories surrounding the journey to medicine are the same. This is the very idea that makes individuals in medicine distinct through a collection of both diversity of thought and experience. It is a culmination of those stories that allow us to treat patients with the utmost respect and care. Now, how can you tell your story? Let me lead you through that now… 

There are three crucial elements of the introduction and are the glue that holds not only the introduction together but also the med school personal statement itself: the hook , narrative lead, and thesis statement .

It is of the utmost importance, regardless of how strong your motivation to become a doctor is, to grab the reader’s attention immediately with the first sentence. As you can imagine, medical school admissions committees read hundreds of personal statements. Therefore, our goal should be to make yours stand out among the rest. Are you considering a description of a specific experience or instance in your life? If so, try to use vivid language inundated with imagery. Doing so will allow an emotional and perhaps sensory connection to what you are attempting to articulate. For instance:

BEFORE : I sat in the hospital waiting room eager for what was to come. 

AFTER : My hair stood on end as my stomach tied itself in knots. I could feel the cold hospital air dance around me, nearly taunting me due to the fact that I was unsure of what was to come next.

As you can see, the latter example allows for an extensive description of the scene which places the reader in the scene. Not only does this style make for an aesthetic read but draws the reader into the text, forcing them to continue reading for more.

The Narrative Lead

Next, we can develop a narrative lead. A narrative lead is essentially a continuation of your hook. The language that you used in order to create a hook for the personal statement is the same language we will use for the narrative lead. Focus on really developing the scene and story. Consider the following questions after drafting out the scene:

  • Why am I telling the medical school admissions committee this story? 
  • What does this experience mean for my candidacy for medical school?
  • What have I learned as a result of this experience and what does it mean for my future medical education and career in medicine?

These questions will allow you to make the successful transition from a narrative tone to the thesis statement.

The Thesis Statement

Finally, the thesis statement is absolutely CRITICAL. I generally flinch when people use capitals, though I want to really catch your attention here. If you take anything away from this, remember that the thesis will be the cornerstone of your personal statement. Without it, the essay lacks a particular level of organization and structure. To that end, the rest of the personal statement will inadvertently tie into the thesis statement, allowing the writing to truly come full-circle with details that are intricately linked together. The thesis statement will not only discuss your motivation to become a physician or pursue medicine but also encompass the themes you will discuss in your body paragraphs. Oftentimes, you may write the remainder of the personal statement and return the thesis once you have developed those body paragraphs.

Briefly think to yourself, “ what are the 3-4 experiences, qualities, or characteristics I want to convey to the admissions committee? ” Alternatively, from your initial narrative lead, what is the next logical progression in your story? Did you describe the moment you decided to pursue medicine and the next chapter of your story was volunteering in the hospital or seeking a medical scribing position? We might include these aspects in order to continue telling the story, though be sure to do this in a way that makes sense to you.  It is essential to have your voice permeate the personal statement. Afterall, it is a personal statement. 

Regardless of the experience or next chapter you lay out, make the connection as to how or why it is relevant and/or significant to your future. How does volunteering at the hospital relate to your future? Was there a specific instance that caught your attention and taught you a lesson of which you hold to a high regard? Include it! For each paragraph, try to make the connection back to the thesis statement in one way or another. A simpler way to do this would be to have the thesis tie into the major themes of the paragraphs. In order to do so, read each paragraph aloud and ask yourself, “ what is the overarching theme I am trying to demonstrate to the reader with this paragraph? ” Then, plug each of those themes into the thesis statement to allow for a cohesive read.

It may feel like at this point the pressure is off, but try not to get too comfortable just yet! The conclusion often presents a unique set of challenges as we must summarize what we talked about without being too repetitive or redundant. A creative way to do so is to refer back to your initial narrative lead. Was there a part of the story you left out that you can incorporate to make the story come full-circle? Is there a specific aspect of the narrative that stood out of which you can make the connection back to? Furthermore, the conclusion will serve as the last words you will leave with the reader. Therefore, we certainly want them to be powerful and allow your voice to diffuse through the personal statement conclusion as well. Consider concluding with closing remarks regarding your motivation to become a physician or pursue medicine, though try to bring a fresh and new perspective.

As you can tell, the medical school personal statement has a lot of moving parts. Regardless, the important thing to remember is that this is your story and only you know it best. Never allow anyone to minimize the impact of your story and inadvertently, your voice. Personally, this is something I am immensely passionate about and I always try to encourage students when I am afforded the opportunity to read their essays. I was always told that writing about a parent or loved one that died is cliche, though it is certainly not cliche for me. It is my story and that is what I stood by and still stand by. Afterall, how could I not use my voice to describe one of the biggest moments of which formed who I am today? I now use my voice to help cultivate encouragement, support, and the creative process in those seeking to tell their own story. 

I leave you with a few final tips in the way of DOs and DON’Ts:

Part 5: Personal Statement Dos and Dont's

  • Be confident and tell your story. Along those lines, never allow someone to minimize your story.
  • Take your time and critically consider what it is you would like the admissions committee to know about you. 
  • Allow yourself to write unrestrained. Ignore the character count initially as sometimes students become hyper-aware of this and limit their creative thought process.
  • Once you have your content, structure, and organization settled, THEN work towards meeting the character count.
  • Allow 1-2 people to look over your personal statement to provide constructive criticism. Remember, the Motivate MD team is available to guide you through edits and revisions of your personal statement. 
  • Take a break from writing if you are feeling overwhelmed. Personally, writing in increments allows me a fresh perspective to pursue a new creative outlook. 
  • Emphasize grammar, punctuation, and spelling. A red flag for admissions committees is careless writing in the way of poor grammar or multiple spelling mistakes.
  • Demonstrate your passions, though be sure to include an experience or example of which fortifies your claim.
  • Be specific. In regard to the last point, if you state you are passionate about helping underserved communities – why is that the case? 
  • Focus on organization and structure as well as a clear flow throughout the personal statement.
  • Make an outline beforehand. 
  • Start early.

Personal Statement Dont's

  • Place “blame” or point fingers at other healthcare professionals in your past. Often, mishandled experiences or mistakes in medicine are driving forces to pursuing a career in medicine. Regardless, always show respect.
  • Appear arrogant or overconfident. Doing so may be what gets your essay placed in the “no” pile as opposed to the “yes” pile. 
  • Use a pseudonym in quotations with the first use to denote to the reader this is, in fact, a fictional name. Then, you may drop the quotations afterwards. 
  • Use initials or an entirely fictional name altogether. 
  • Plagarize or use content of which was not 100% your own. 
  • Be generic or use a famous quotation.
  • Include statistics – including GPA or MCAT scores. This is listed in a specific section on the medical school application so we can certainly save the characters for other valuable details about you.
  • Reiterate similar aspects of which may be in your activities section.

What that means is that you can't just put any statement of fact and have it be your thesis. For example, everyone knows that puppies are cute . An ineffective thesis statement would be, "Puppies are adorable and everyone knows it." This isn't really something that's a debatable topic.

Something that would be more debatable would be, "A puppy's cuteness is derived from its floppy ears, small body, and playfulness." These are three things that can be debated on. Some people might think that the cutest thing about puppies is the fact that they follow you around or that they're really soft and fuzzy.

All cuteness aside, you want to make sure that your thesis statement is not only debatable, but that it also actually thoroughly answers the research question that was posed. You always want to make sure that your evidence is supporting a claim that you made (and not the other way around). This is why it's crucial to read and research about a topic first and come to a conclusion later. If you try to get your research to fit your thesis statement, then it may not work out as neatly as you think. As you learn more, you discover more (and the outcome may not be what you originally thought).

Additionally, your thesis statement shouldn't be too big or too grand. It'll be hard to cover everything in a thesis statement like, "The federal government should act now on climate change." The topic is just too large to actually say something new and meaningful. Instead, a more effective thesis statement might be, "Local governments can combat climate change by providing citizens with larger recycling bins and offering local classes about composting and conservation." This is easier to work with because it's a smaller idea, but you can also discuss the overall topic that you might be interested in, which is climate change.

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with identification, treatment, and prevention of injuries in sports (Edelson 53). In addition, it deals with physical fitness and well-being of individuals who participate in any kind of physical exercise.

Sports medicine covers both professional and amateur athletes in all fields of sports. It is a diverse field because it includes healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, and nutritional specialists (Edelson 54).

In addition, it encompasses several health careers that include medical doctors, kinesiotherapists, athletic trainers, nurses, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, and doctors of osteopathy (Narvani and Lynn 23).

Sports medicine is an important field of medicine because it deals with preventive, curative, and rehabilitative aspects of physical fitness and injuries in sports.

Study and practice of sports medicine dates back to the 20 th century even though certain aspects existed as early as the 5 th century. However, certain aspects of sports medicine can be traced back to ancient times. Greeks and Romans developed ways to improve training of athletes, hence development of physical education.

Development of physical education led to careful control and supervision of athletes’ training that led to improved strength and athletic abilities. During ancient times, athletes underwent special training procedures in order to reduce risks to injuries (Snook 252).

For example, therapeutic exercises used to heal injuries are attributed to Herodicus and Galen. Galen was a doctor in charge of monitoring the training of gladiator fighters (Snook 252). Modern practice of sports medicine can be traced to the 1928 Olympic Games.

A committee was formed to organize the International Congress of Sports Medicine (Snook 253). The congress came up with the idea of involving medical doctors in the games to deal with athletes’ injuries and physical fitness.

During the 1968 Olympics, Dr. J. C. Kennedy organized a team of doctors whose responsibility was to deal with athletes’ injuries and physical fitness (Schepsis and Busconi 74). In addition, the doctor formed the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine.

He was the first doctor appointed to head a medical team in the history of Olympics (Snook 253). Today, every team that participates in physical activity has a team doctor or physician. The role of physicians of improving team performance and safety is critical cannot be ignored.

Members of a sports medicine team include physical therapists, physical trainers, surgeons, physicians or medical doctors and athletes (Edelson 62). Athletic trainers or therapists deal with health and physical fitness of athletes. They treat and prevent athletic injuries.

They also serve the role of mediators between the team’s coach and athletes (Narvani and Lynn 27). The team’s physician supervises the physical history of players, clears players for return to athletics after rest due to injury, and cooperates with the physical trainer to improve the team’s training program (Narvani and Lynn 28).

Athletes have several roles. They adhere to rules set by the team’s physician and trainer, maintain good physical fitness as required by the physician and coach, and use protective equipment to avoid injuries (Schepsis and Busconi 64).

On the other hand, the coach supervises athletes’ training, ensures safety of training facilities, provides protective equipment to athletes, and develops training programs and procedures that enhance athletes’ safety (Narvani and Lynn 29).

Athletic training students (ATS’s) assist the coach to clean training facilities, and keep records of athletes’ health and physical fitness. In addition, they help the coach improve safety by keeping training equipment in good condition.

The primary focus of sports medicine is quick recovery of athletes from injuries. This is due to the competitive nature of sports that requires optimal performance by athletes. Sports medicine offers preventive, rehabilitative, and curative medical services to athletes.

Therefore, practitioners in sports medicine specialize in diagnosis and treatment of injuries associated with participation in physical activity (Schepsis and Busconi 77). The main type of injury experienced by athletes is deformation of muscles and joints caused by unsafe training methods.

Sports medicine has facilitated development of innovative treatment methods that guarantee quick recovery of athletes. These include methods to restore muscle integrity, tissue strength, and joint mobility and durability (Schepsis and Busconi 75). Preventive services include ways of avoiding injuries.

Examples of preventive services include education on safe training methods and procedures. On the other hand, rehabilitative services include ways to hasten recovery and avoid deterioration of injuries.

The American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) classifies sports medicine into two classes that include surgical care and primary care (Schepsis and Busconi 78). Surgical care includes surgical operations that repair joints, ligaments, and tendons.

Primary care includes all other medical procedures that do not involve surgery. Some aspects of primary care include nutritional guidance that helps athletes choose foods that promote physical activity and strength.

The sports industry is an important sector of the global economy. Countries that participate in national and international sports events generate revenue that develops their economies and improves lives of athletes (Schepsis and Busconi 61).

Therefore, the health of athletes should be improved in order for countries and athletes to benefit fully (Engerbretsen and Steffen 961). Sports medicine is important because it monitors physical activities that involve many risks, which predispose athletes to injuries.

Injuries cause great harm to the body and reduce performance and productivity of athletes. In addition, physical injuries may result in long-term physical complications such as organ amputation and paralysis (Engerbretsen and Steffen 961). For example, fractures cause joint pains, body aches, and arthritis.

Therefore, it is important to avoid, and treat injuries. Regaining mobility and activity after injury requires skills of trained medical practitioners who possess knowledge on how to induce recovery of bones and tissues (Engerbretsen and Steffen 961).

Sports medicine is also important because it helps prevent future injuries thus enabling athletes improve their performance. Physical injuries cause great pain and suffering to athletes because they sometimes take long to heal. In addition, they occasionally lead to irreparable damages that end careers of athletes.

Some athletes have been paralyzed due to severe brain injuries that resulted from physical injuries. In addition, others have had their hands or legs amputated to prevent further damage. Sports medicine helps prevent such incidences among athletes (Engerbretsen and Steffen 962).

Common sports injuries include concussion, muscle cramps, ankle sprain, ACL sprains, and shin splints (Schepsis and Busconi 39). Concussion results from extensive head trauma due to violent movement of the brain within the skull.

Muscle cramps result from sudden contraction of muscles and consequent failure to relax. They do not cause serious complications because recovery is quick. ACL sprains results from poor coordination between feet and knees.

They arise when knees twist while the feet are firmly positioned on the ground without any movement to complement the knees’ movements (Schepsis and Busconi 41).

Ankle sprains result from excess stretching of ligaments due to strenuous physical activity. Shin splints results from overuse of muscles that connect the lower leg to the shinbone (Schepsis and Busconi 43).
