Nowadays, the technology has become essential in people’s daily life because it makes human beings’ lives more colorful. In the same way, technology also changed traditional education in many ways. For example, technology makes education more efficiency, more interesting, and more flexible. However, it also has negative effects in education. Technology makes education more efficiency. Students use smartphones in their daily lives, which is providing some ways to let student have access to internet, and therefore making things such as checking their email in palm of their hand.

Technology make education more interesting. For example, “prezi” have the same functions as power point, but it looks more interesting because it has more animations to show you ideas when you make presentation. Which makes a presentation more visually appealing. Now prezi is used at some of university, for instance,Oregon state university and Dwight school and also elsewhere in primary education and higher education. Prezi can achieve that a group present a same presentation, but allow students present their knowledge in different learning styles. (http://en. wikipedia. rg/wiki/Prezi) Technology also make education more flexible. Not everyone has the schedule that fits to enroll a traditional school to take a class. Some people will take online classes, which gives them access to get degree they want. And more and more people are earning their degrees online, by doing this, they can further their education, and are open to more opportunities as well. Although, technology can be convenient for people with special needs, it also have the negative effects in education. The downfall to this is that student’s handwriting skills are reduced, due to the fact that students rely on technology too much. And other negative points for technology in education is easy to make students distracting when they use technology products (smart phone or laptop) on class. Students cannot put 100% attention on teacher, they will spent too much time on twitter or facebook. It can be said that the two biggest truths of human existence are death and association with technological advancements. Whether one like it or not, technological advancements are occurring at an exponential rate, and the roles of technology in the lives of people is getting expanded with each passing day. The presence of technology in the lives of humans cannot be denied as it is linked with innumerable actions of the people in the world society. Right from the presence of smartphones to laptops to GPS systems, innumerable examples of such technological devices that are linked to the day-to-day functions of people can be cited. Moreover, the Internet has revolutionized communication all over the world. Thus, be it good or bad, the huge importance of technology and technological devices in the lives of people cannot be denied in any way. As such, technology also impacts the process of education owing to its facilities that can help the academicians, students and teachers alike. In our society today, it is rare for someone anywhere to not own a phone, let alone a smartphone that’s capable of tying into the Internet and accessing infinite amounts of information. This fact is significantly affecting those who have grown up in this period in our society, exposed to this technology at an early age or even as infants. Technological advances also indicate big changes for the future. The question we must come to as a society is not whether technology’s role in our society is good or bad, because it has become an inevitable part of our lives, but rather how we can go about making it more of a positive tool and reducing negative outcomes. Technology is the catalyst to change in educating generations that is affecting us all both positively and negatively through its shaping of education itself, social culture in schools, and future prospects for our nation’s younger generations. These technological advances are going to exist regardless of anyone’s opinion, and it’s up to us to make it a useful tool. Almost everybody sees technology as advancements that have made life easier due to their ability to reduce time needed to complete tasks and research, as well as their ability to make quick and accurate calculations. By having the world available at one’s fingertips through the use of a smartphone, making appointments, plans, contacting others, and getting the answer to questions and problems has never been easier. Smartphones have developed a strong role in education because they are the primary source people use as means of receiving information. Over the last two decades of being a student, I have observed books and libraries becoming less and less of a tool as phones have become more and more capable over the years, and in turn have become dominant. The archives available on a smartphone the size of a hand contain more information than the largest library in the world could ever hope to. This makes research, citing, and computing much easier and less time consuming than it was five, ten, and especially twenty and more years in the past. Reading on a smartphone, tablet, or other device has been shown to increase vocabulary since one can look up a word on the device as necessary without having to get up and open a book. These devices have proven to be useful tools in the classroom, but are equally as effective as a distraction. With access to every part of the Internet, students are not only able to communicate with each other through text, but can also immerse themselves in the world of social media, listen to music, and even watch movies. Technology has connected us globally and has allowed us to access information and discoveries taking place in other countries. It also allows us to experience different learning strategies developed in different cultural environments. Technological advancement has connected the entire globe, and helped the research work in the field of education. The library of an educational institution might not be well-equipped for some particular research. However, if such an institution has a computer lab, the students can easily access the Internet and use the digital encyclopedias so that they can get to know the things needed for the research work. The students can access online academic journals from the various corners of the world. (Christensen) The Internet simply enhances the reach of academic data to every corner of the world, and facilitates the process of educating students. The technological advancements that bring about globalization in educational process have a positive effect on the students as well as the educational institutions. The Internet enables the students and the teachers to communicate with their counterparts from far away parts of the world through video conferences. This makes the students get the facility of being trained by the best experts from any part of the world with ease. The factors like geographical distance, expenditure, and barriers in communication are minimized due to the increasing effect of technology in education. Thus, conferences, collaborations in research, and discussions are greatly promoted by the advancement in technology all over. In this context, it should be remembered that distance education is greatly aided by the technological devices and advancements. In the past, the students could avail the distance learning courses or the correspondence courses at the universities or community colleges. However, the distance limited the scope for communication. But, as the Internet has taken over the world, distance education has become very convenient for the students and teachers. The study materials along with the video classes can be distributed among the enrolled students via the Internet, and communication among the students and teachers has become very easy. Thus, technology has helped the spread of education to a wider number of people all over the globe. (Wetzel) If the education system at schools is considered, it can be understood that the students get trained in computers right from a very tender age in schools. The teachers use educational games in the schools so as to make the students accustomed to computers and their uses. Thus, the students are able to learn the basics of counting, spelling and many other educational lessons via computer games in a fun way. A proper grooming from a young age makes the students accustomed to the use of technology in education. As they grow up and learn more, they try to integrate more and more technological devices and ways to help their procedures of learning and education. The students in schools are also able to use the Internet for virtually attending the Web seminars that are conducted by various educational institutions and museums. One such program is conducted by NASA that allows the students to converse with the astronauts in space. In this way, the students get a better idea about the world through the help of technology. In the digital world advertisements are found everywhere we look. There is already proof that this has developed a nation of people who are compelled by what media and corporations are directing them towards in order to support the consumer market. By forcing students to use the Internet as means of educational sources we are subjecting our kids to this type of manipulation at an early age. Hence, as the students get more accustomed to the world of technology, it is also the duty of the teachers and parents to guide them about the proper use of the Internet and the technological devices. As the students mature, they need to be made aware of the ability of the media to condition their thinking and block their freedom of thought. They should be taught to use the technological advancements for their own purposes, rather than being influenced by the attempt at mental conditioning. Moreover, they need to be made aware of the possible threats that are associated with the use of technology. Setting students up online without teaching the proper means of doing so and precautions that should be taken can make them become vulnerable to having their information lost or stolen which can impact their educational career as well as personal life. But yet, the positive effects of technology on the educational system have to be considered. Digital multimedia enhances the efficiency of access for the students and the teachers. Also, the multimedia presentations that include video, sound, text and images can be important in creating stronger memory links among the students. Moreover, the digital technologies facilitate instant playbacks that help the learner to access various sections of the study materials with much more ease in comparison to a textbook. (Hay) The data that is found on the Internet can be taken to be authentic as the source can be verified. The authenticity and cultural relevance of data helps the students to learn their lessons and continue research work. Apart from all of this, the Internet provides the students with immense communication opportunities. However, there are common concerns among the teachers. Since the students get access to the Internet, their thirst for knowing things is getting diminished. It is thought that the students do not pay much heed to use their memory as they are complacent about the fact that they can get to know all they want at the click of a mouse or a smartphone with immense ease. Thus, the students have become quite accustomed to get quick answers to their queries, and they are likely to give up the search when they come across an easy answer. Many of the teachers have the opinion that the students have become conditioned to go for the easiest of answers found on the Internet. The teachers need to take the charge in this matter. They need to make the students understand that it would be best for them to use the Internet for gaining knowledge, instead of surfing for the easiest answer. “Some colleges of education appear to be proactive in preparing teachers to integrate information technology to support pedagogy and learning, while others seem to be maintaining a status quo.” (Duhaney) It would be correct to say in such a scenario that the pros and cons of technology getting integrated in the educational system would be there. But, the students and the teachers have to find the ways in which technology can be used in the most constructive way for the purpose of imparting education. There is a higher possibility of plagiarism in the age of technology as students can easily copy from the internet. However, there are tools available on the Internet itself that can track the plagiarized content. Thus, it can be said that while the Internet can be misused by a user, the same technological advancement provides the tool for countering the misuse. In contrast to unethical practice of plagiarism, the Internet can also be used to work on shared spreadsheets or documents that facilitate multiple users to access and work on the same file at the same time. The online storage services are also available that ensure that no data gets lost. People have the facility of accessing the stored data from any Internet enabled device from any corner of the globe. In this way, technology proves to be of immense importance in easing the process of academic work and spreading education among students. Moreover, “technology assisted education can be employed to supplement direct instruction by professors or it can substitute for direct class-room teaching.” (Eddy et. al) Technology goes beyond what the eye can see. New opportunities are arising, as other positions are becoming outdated as they are being taken over by technology like assembly line robots or managing software for companies. This is occurring across the job market from the medical field to all of the government agencies. It makes one consider the benefits of a school system that integrates technology into its agenda to create a generation that is prepared as users of the advanced technology. It would be a mindless act to ignore the presence and immense utility of technology in people’s lives including the education system. Hence, it is the best option to train oneself to use technology in the best possible way. People should aim at extracting all the positives out of the technological devices and methods. The teachers and students truly need to integrate technology as an effective and essential tool in the process of education. But, the distracting factors that aim to pose problem to the process of constructive use of technology have to be eliminated by the users of technology. Only then it can emerge as a powerful tool that can revolutionize the process of education in the entire world. Technology is the way of the future. No matter how a person uses it for his or her own purpose, the presence and effects of technological advancement cannot be ignored in any way in the present age.

Wheelchairs have been created so students can partake in track and field and other sports like basketball. Casey Followay of Wooster, Ohio, is an example of a student using a racing wheelchair that also him to race in his high schools track team. As well as wheelchairs, new speaking devices, like the electronic pointing device and sip and puff system, have been invited to allow students with speaking and physical impairments to be able to communicate. The electronic pointing device allows the student to control the curser on a computer screen without the use of their hands. The sip and puff system is activated instead by inhaling or exhaling. Theses devices can be used in conjecture with a computer program that speaks out commands, comments or words, allowing the participant to speak and communicate with other students and teachers. Furthermore, cochlear implants permit students who are profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing to partake in school discussions and classes. The device and the microphone the teacher wears allow the student to hear and understand speech better, making it possible for them be more independent in school and classes. All these devices allow students to be able to have greater …show more content…

In many classes – Effective Writing to World History 101 – students use programs like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to write their essays and to create presentations. When I visited my uncle, a financier, I saw first hand how necessary these computer programs were in his day-to-day job. Also, in my high school business class we used computers to keep track of the stock market and trades. Each student had a excel sheet that they used to keep track of the stock market and an investing program to learn how to invest in the stock market. By learning as students how to use the computer to invest and trade we will be better equipped as adults to invest in stock markets and to keep track of our funds and investments. Furthermore, in my photography classes I – an advance photographer – used computers to learn how to create digital art and graphic art. Later on these skills will become useful for creating business cards, posters or designing something for a job or business. For example my mother – an event organizer – uses digital art skills to create posters and invitations for companies’ events. Through all these opportunities in classes to use technology, students can use their knowledge to further themselves in the workforce and for when they are adults in their everyday

Impact Of Technology On The Classroom

Technology in the classroom is important for teachers, parents, and students alike, because technology use has become a necessary skill for survival in today’s vastly expanding technology driven global economy. Research has shown an increase in student’s success rates when exposed to technology in the classroom. Also technology has opened lines of communication between educators and parents to keep students on track, and help teachers educate better.

Mentorship Program

There are so many avenues to experience by using technology from research to presentation. For example, the use of classroom-to-classroom video chatting, such as a debate between two classes on a particular subject, can help students learn in a quicker manner and help them understand the topic at a higher degree. The use of iPads early on in elementary school and the introduction to computers that many children don’t receive would be beneficial later on in life. In today’s society, technology is used extensively in the workforce. Having the proper up-to-date technology can help the student better succeed and stay on top of the growing world. Utilization of technology will now prepare students for a better future. Schools should provide more ways to use technology in order to prepare students for a better

Many of our students have smartphones, laptops, and tablets they use throughout the school day for school work. While some students depend on their devices to look up the current fashion trends and football stats, we feel that technology has also enabled students to think in a different way. Many students are quick on their feet to Google information to prove their friend wrong, send texts and emails in less than 10 seconds, and get excited when they are allowed to use their

You walk into most public-school classrooms and you see laptops, I pads, Desktops and sometimes smart boards. These are used as learning tools. When using these tools, the kids really are learning with a hands-on approach. For some kids, it’s a helpful tool for other kids it’s a distraction. The students can use technology for school work at home and it also helps with the Turing in process with teachers. Educational Reform In America

The biggest problem with today’s education is how rapid technology is advancing. So rapid, in fact, that schools are attempting to keep up, but are sadly falling short. Teachers are being required to incorporate new technology into their everyday methods of teaching. The use of IPads or laptops in classrooms can be helpful to both teachers and students(edreform online classes)”. If a teacher is not overly familiar with the new devices, then the students will lose what little time they have to learn. As a teacher is attempting to fix technical problems in one class, the class that has a tech savvy teacher will be advancing far ahead. On the other hand, if a classroom is full of students who are very unfamiliar with the technology will have to be taught how to operate it, which wastes valuable time. In today’s society technology usage is so much more widespread than it was just five years ago. The new toys can allow schools to broaden their curriculum. Since most work can be done on a single device, kids can work at their own pace and potentially reach heights they could never reach with book, pen, and paper. The benefits of this new tech greatly outweigh the downsides. The biggest problem with technology in classrooms is their lack of use. So few schools have jumped on board with these programs, and therefore are holding their kids back. These products are readily available, but “the use of new technology

U.S. Education Today & Tomorrow

Technology can be found in every classroom of schools today and continues to grow as the field of technology continues to advance. School age children today know more about technology than most middle-aged adults because they have been exposed to it from such an early age. We live in the technology age and it’s clear that technology is here to stay and has permeated every area of our lives including home, work and leisure. Because of this, educators and school staff have been tech-savvy and must continue to keep up with the technological advances in order to present as competent to the student body. Technology has impacted the way our students learn and has provided avenues of learning to disabled students that they didn’t have in the past and has provided teaching staff with a multitude of resources and diversity in class activities to aid in teaching (Pearson, 2010). Without a doubt, technology will continue to impact our educational system as new technologies emerge and our country competes to keep up with a new globalized economy. Schools will implement these technologies into the

Technology On Children

Remember that scary, grotesque, evil monster we were all scared of when we were younger? Well, it's alive, we just can't see it, and it's called technology. As we all know, technology is changing and evolving every day; but it's almost as if the technology is taking over the minds of our future generation. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more all the time. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. These devices can come in handy and can be helpful, but they almost are consuming everyone's mind and minimizing critical thinking. Many of technology users are children or young adults. Although the use of technology in education can have some positive results, it has more negative effects that are affecting students.

Technology has revolutionized the human experience by changing the way one learns. Technology can best be defined as a tool that supports and promotes human learning. This can be seen through the usage of calculators, tablets (example: iPad), Smart Boards, video cameras, and, of course, the computer. These are all innovations that can have a profound impact on classroom learning. Although there are some schools that have a strict policy that technology should be removed from the modern day classroom, other schools believe that integrating technology into the classroom helps prepare our students for the elaborate world they will face going forward. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on the technology policy and how it has a positive

Essay on The Importance of Technology Education in Schools

Being proficient in using technology will be a prerequisite for almost any employment for younger students. It is the school’s job to prepare many of these kids for employment, and that is especially true for the lower socioeconomic areas where students with computers at home are rare. Eisenberg and Johnson describe this basic skills education as the “laundry list” approach to computer education. By ‘list” they mean isolated skills, such as word processing, or searching the Internet. “Students need to be able to use computers and other technology flexibly, creatively and purposefully. All learners should be able to recognize what they need to accomplish, determine whether a computer will help them to do so, and then be able to use the computer as part of the process of accomplishing their task.”1

argumentative essay about the use of technology in education

Technology might be making education worse

Listen to the essay, as read by Antero Garcia, associate professor in the Graduate School of Education.

As a professor of education and a former public school teacher, I’ve seen digital tools change lives in schools.

I’ve documented the ways mobile technology like phones can transform student engagement in my own classroom.

I’ve explored how digital tools might network powerful civic learning and dialogue for classrooms across the country – elements of education that are crucial for sustaining our democracy today.

And, like everyone, I’ve witnessed digital technologies make schooling safer in the midst of a global pandemic. Zoom and Google Classroom, for instance, allowed many students to attend classrooms virtually during a period when it was not feasible to meet in person.

So I want to tell you that I think technologies are changing education for the better and that we need to invest more in them – but I just can’t.

Given the substantial amount of scholarly time I’ve invested in documenting the life-changing possibilities of digital technologies, it gives me no pleasure to suggest that these tools might be slowly poisoning us. Despite their purported and transformational value, I’ve been wondering if our investment in educational technology might in fact be making our schools worse.

Let me explain.

When I was a classroom teacher, I loved relying on the latest tools to create impressive and immersive experiences for my students. We would utilize technology to create class films, produce social media profiles for the Janie Crawfords, the Holden Caulfields, and other literary characters we studied, and find playful ways to digitally share our understanding of the ideas we studied in our classrooms.

As a teacher, technology was a way to build on students’ interests in pop culture and the world around them. This was exciting to me.

But I’ve continued to understand that the aspects of technology I loved weren’t actually about technology at all – they were about creating authentic learning experiences with young people. At the heart of these digital explorations were my relationships with students and the trust we built together.

“Part of why I’ve grown so skeptical about this current digital revolution is because of how these tools reshape students’ bodies and their relation to the world around them.”

I do see promise in the suite of digital tools that are available in classrooms today. But my research focus on platforms – digital spaces like Amazon, Netflix, and Google that reshape how users interact in online environments – suggests that when we focus on the trees of individual tools, we ignore the larger forest of social and cognitive challenges.

Most people encounter platforms every day in their online social lives. From the few online retail stores where we buy groceries to the small handful of sites that stream our favorite shows and media content, platforms have narrowed how we use the internet today to a small collection of Silicon Valley behemoths. Our social media activities, too, are limited to one or two sites where we check on the updates, photos, and looped videos of friends and loved ones.

These platforms restrict our online and offline lives to a relatively small number of companies and spaces – we communicate with a finite set of tools and consume a set of media that is often algorithmically suggested. This centralization of internet – a trend decades in the making – makes me very uneasy.

From willfully hiding the negative effects of social media use for vulnerable populations to creating tools that reinforce racial bias, today’s platforms are causing harm and sowing disinformation for young people and adults alike. The deluge of difficult ethical and pedagogical questions around these tools are not being broached in any meaningful way in schools – even adults aren’t sure how to manage their online lives.

You might ask, “What does this have to do with education?” Platforms are also a large part of how modern schools operate. From classroom management software to attendance tracking to the online tools that allowed students to meet safely during the pandemic, platforms guide nearly every student interaction in schools today. But districts are utilizing these tools without considering the wider spectrum of changes that they have incurred alongside them.

For example, it might seem helpful for a school to use a management tool like Classroom Dojo (a digital platform that can offer parents ways to interact with and receive updates from their family’s teacher) or software that tracks student reading and development like Accelerated Reader for day-to-day needs. However, these tools limit what assessment looks like and penalize students based on flawed interpretations of learning.

Another problem with platforms is that they, by necessity, amass large swaths of data. Myriad forms of educational technology exist – from virtual reality headsets to e-readers to the small sensors on student ID cards that can track when students enter schools. And all of this student data is being funneled out of schools and into the virtual black boxes of company databases.

Part of why I’ve grown so skeptical about this current digital revolution is because of how these tools reshape students’ bodies and their relation to the world around them. Young people are not viewed as complete human beings but as boxes checked for attendance, for meeting academic progress metrics, or for confirming their location within a school building. Nearly every action that students perform in schools – whether it’s logging onto devices, accessing buildings, or sharing content through their private online lives – is noticed and recorded. Children in schools have become disembodied from their minds and their hearts. Thus, one of the greatest and implicit lessons that kids learn in schools today is that they must sacrifice their privacy in order to participate in conventional, civic society.

The pandemic has only made the situation worse. At its beginnings, some schools relied on software to track students’ eye movements, ostensibly ensuring that kids were paying attention to the tasks at hand. Similarly, many schools required students to keep their cameras on during class time for similar purposes. These might be seen as in the best interests of students and their academic growth, but such practices are part of a larger (and usually more invisible) process of normalizing surveillance in the lives of youth today.

I am not suggesting that we completely reject all of the tools at our disposal – but I am urging for more caution. Even the seemingly benign resources we might use in our classrooms today come with tradeoffs. Every Wi-Fi-connected, “smart” device utilized in schools is an investment in time, money, and expertise in technology over teachers and the teaching profession.

Our focus on fixing or saving schools via digital tools assumes that the benefits and convenience that these invisible platforms offer are worth it.

But my ongoing exploration of how platforms reduce students to quantifiable data suggests that we are removing the innovation and imagination of students and teachers in the process.

Using Technology in Classrooms Argumentative Essay

Introduction, the evidence, counterevidence, works cited.

Numerous schools across the country are investing massive sums of money in technology in order to improve learning. While a few institutions have benefited from these programs, research shows that several have not. Technology use in classes also impedes other programs and reduces learning outcomes.

In certain scenarios, technology use in the classroom is counterproductive. The National Assessment of Educational Progress found that students who spent too much of their time on technological tools, such as computers, performed worse than those who did not. Although school administrators mean well by introducing technologies in their institutions, these tools can cause adverse distractions in the student body.

In fact, such distractions should provide enough evidence for school administrators to remove them from their institution. When computers are present in a classroom, it causes teachers to compete with them. Unlike other learning tools (textbooks, whiteboards etc) that are exclusively used for learning purposes, computers have so many non-academic uses. Children are bound to abuse these advantages and thus perform poorly.

Some schools provide their students with computer games, tutorials and simulations in order to boost their writing skills. Kulik (34) found that their writing skills got worse after participating in computer enrichment program; their performance decreased by -0.14.

Richtel (A1) explains that technology can be detrimental to student’s learning owing to its effect on the financial costs of a school. He explains that many schools are blindly investing in technology without asking for proof that it works. Since technology requires a lot of revenues, these schools have had to cut back on their expenditures in other traditional classes such as physical education, music or art.

As much as technological skills are important in children’s adult lives, their need to develop skills in physical education or art is just as important too. It is especially relevant to those children with talents in such areas. Technology use in classrooms is placing unnecessary financial pressure on schools with smaller budgets thus eating up on other vital knowledge areas.

Sometimes technology use in classrooms does not affect children’s performance either negatively or positively. One should note that neutral effects on learning are just as bad as negative effects because schools are not realizing their returns on investment. It is pointless to spend massive amounts of revenue on a tool that causes no improvement.

Kulik (13) investigated the effect on instructional technology in secondary and elementary schools and found no significant changes. His analysis was based on secondary literature from over 15 national studies.

The author found that reading scores among children who received their instructions through technology improved by very small quantities. Furthermore, because the results were divergent among various researches, then it is not possible to make a firm conclusion on the subject.

The results of technology enhanced learning among special groups are not that promising, as well. Muir Herzig (120) did a study of the effect of technology on children who are at risk. She defined at-risk children as those whose education might be endangered owing to their health, social, family or economic environments.

Usually, such children will report high rates of absenteeism and low grades. Some schools with high proportions of at-risk students have introduced technology as a method of coping with these challenges, but have found minimal results. The researcher cited teacher-related deficiencies and administrational inadequacies as some of the reasons behind the poor results.

All these findings indicate that no conclusive proof exists to support the use of technology. The earliest proponents of technology use in the classroom came from the Clinton administration in 1995. They believed that technology would increase the US’s competiveness in the global arena.

However, the group stressed that massive adoption should only commence when the education system has tangible proof that the technologies work. This proof should come from nation-wide trials that have lasted for years on end.

However, because technology applications are so different and they keep changing rapidly, then it is difficult to carry out such a trial. In essence, users of technology may have to embrace the technology without certainty about the potential effects (Richtel A1). It is simply pointless to make such a large investment without having sufficient evidence that the approach works.

The inherent nature of technology has a large role to play in determining these negative outcomes. Technologies keep changing so quickly; therefore, training programs must become a routine activity in the school environment, yet this is not always tenable. Furthermore, these changes in technology also correspond to changes in the students’ learning styles.

Teachers must merge these new learning styles to their teaching approach, yet that is not always possible. Technology use requires coordinators that can facilitate these transitions and teachers who are willing to make changes constantly; this may be a difficult ask for most instructors.

Additionally, the costs of changing these pieces of technology may also impede some schools. It is always necessary to upgrade hardware and software in the school environment (Muir Herzig 122). However, funding issues may minimize these upgrades thus making it difficult for teachers to merge new software with the old computers that they have.

A number of proponents believe that schools should give technology a second thought because it prepares students for the outside world. They claim that it teaches them the necessary skills to compete in the corporate arena. However, these proponents are assuming that the goal of technology is only long term. If a teacher’s goal is to improve performance today, then he or she would not gain from the use of technology.

Furthermore, when teachers do not give students short term goals to aspire to, then their performance starts to dwindle. It is quite difficult to erasure higher order thinking or problem solving skills without the use of tests, yet this is what proponents of technology use are advocating for in their institutions.

Even if one assumes that technology leads to development of certain learning skills, one must realize that it also destroys others. Language skills and interpersonal skills are just as important as problem-solving skills, especially among young children.

However, the introduction of technology in classes reduces the amount of time that students have to interact with one another and thus develop the necessary team-working or language skills needed to survive in the workplace too.

Some proponents argue that research has shown some positive improvements; even though these findings are small, they still represent a positive correlation. However, analysts have realized that sometimes the positive results may come from external factors such as parental involvement. When schools decide to incorporate some of these technologies in teaching, they often expect parents to make contributions to the purchases.

As a result, most parents will become keen on their children’s performance, which will make their results improve. Additionally, one will find that schools with high levels of investment in technology often train their teachers very frequently. Increases in test scores may actually be brought on by the improved teaching training rather than the technologies.

Baylor and Ritchie (12) found that for technology to work well in the classroom, it must be complemented by a series of other activities. Teachers need to have a plan for the technology, which must consist of the vision and philosophy that will determine the use of that technology. One must also name all the stakeholders involved as well as the configuration, time plan and funding components of the technology.

Furthermore, teachers require technology role models from their administrations, such as school principles, in order to provide leadership. Curriculum alignment is also another vital contributor to the success of technology. Teachers need to be exposed to the technology for a long period of time before they can claim to have mastered it.

Educators also need to make decisions on how best to use the technologies once they have been introduced to that setting (Evans-Andris 27). All these prerequisites may present serious problems in realization of tangible results. First, educators may find it difficult to estimate aspects of the technology plan such as funding or configuration.

It is difficult to find technology models in schools, and curriculum alignment is always problematic; many teachers cannot maintain the same pace as the changes in technology. Lastly, differentials exist on the best way to utilize technology.

Research on the effect of technology in classrooms is inconclusive as some studies show only slight improvements while most reveal no change or reduced performance. It would not make sense to invest in a program that has not been validated. Furthermore, most positive results emanate from teacher training and parental support rather than the actual technological tool.

How to Write an Argumentative Essay About Technology?

Now you know what argumentative essays about technology are and why they're important?

Let's look at how to write a compelling argument.

Pick a Title

The title of your essay should capture the attention of your reader and summarize the main points of your argument.

Think carefully about how you want to frame your argument in order to create an effective title. It should be short and catchy, but also accurately reflect the main arguments or ideas in your essay.

Form an Outline

After deciding on a title for your essay, it’s important to form an outline of the key points and arguments you will make in each paragraph. This will help keep you organized during the writing process and ensure that all of your ideas are connected.

Make sure there is good flow between each section so that readers can follow along easily.

Here is an outline template for argumentative essay about technology:

Write an Introduction

Your introduction is where you set up the context for your essay and explain what it is that you will be arguing throughout the rest of the text.

Include relevant background information, as well as any interesting facts or anecdotes that could help engage readers from the beginning.

Be sure to end with a thesis statement that clearly lays out which side you are taking in this debate and what evidence will be used to support it.

Write Body Paragraphs

Your body paragraphs are where most of your research comes into play!

Ensure these paragraphs contain detailed evidence from reliable sources that supports each point being made in each paragraph.

Additionally, be sure to use transition words throughout these sections so that readers can follow along easily from one point to another.

Write a Conclusion

Your conclusion should briefly outline the key points and evidence used throughout your paper. While reiterating why this particular topic is so important and relevant today.

Your conclusion should leave readers with something thought-provoking!

Perhaps something they hadn’t considered before rather than just summarizing everything they have already read in previous paragraphs.

Artificial Intelligence In Education: Teachers’ Opinions On AI In The Classroom

In recent years, the meteoric rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has sent shockwaves through society on both economic and cultural levels. Seemingly poised to become as ubiquitous as email, this rapidly evolving technology is transforming many aspects of daily life—including how we teach and learn.

In October 2023, Forbes Advisor surveyed 500 practicing educators from around the U.S. about their experiences with AI in the classroom. With respondents representing teachers at all career stages, the results reveal a snapshot of how artificial intelligence is impacting education.

What Is AI?

Before we dive into AI’s function in the education space, let’s define this technology in general terms. Artificial intelligence allows machines to execute tasks that have traditionally required human cognition. AI-powered programs and devices can make decisions, solve problems, understand and mimic natural language and learn from unstructured data.

OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT—a natural language processing chatbot—in the fall of 2022 brought AI to many people’s attention for the first time. However, AI tools have been part of the tech landscape for years. If you’ve ever played chess against a bot, consulted a virtual assistant like Siri or Alexa or even scrolled through your social media feed, you’ve already interacted with artificial intelligence.

What Are the Functions of AI in Education?

We’re still learning how AI technologies will integrate into the education sector as they develop, and we don’t yet have a full picture of how AI will affect critical issues of ethics, equity and data safety. However, we’ve already pinpointed several key uses for artificial intelligence in education, including the following.

AI-Powered Educational Games

Teachers have long recognized the value of play-based learning, and schools have used educational computer games—such as The Oregon Trail, first released in 1974—since the early days of computer gaming. Today’s AI-powered games can deliver targeted learning thanks to user-responsive programming.

Adaptive Learning Platforms

Educational technology leaders such as Carnegie Learning and Knewton offer adaptive platforms that customize learning activities and content in real time. Continuous assessment allows for immediate feedback and helps the system adjust its approach. Adaptive learning methodologies vary from simple rules-based systems to multifaceted machine learning algorithms.

Automated Grading and Feedback Systems

By automating grading, planning and administrative work, artificial intelligence systems can free up educators’ time and energy for increased student contact. This is a common argument in support of using AI in the classroom.

Chatbots for Student Support

At many higher education institutions, university chatbots support learners by responding to admissions queries, connecting students to course information and student services and delivering reminders. Other chatbots can help students brainstorm ideas, improve their writing skills and optimize their study time.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Often dedicated to a single subject such as math or language, intelligent tutoring systems simulate the one-on-one experience of working with a human tutor. Examples include the Duolingo app and Khan Academy’s Khanmigo tutoring system.

AI’s Influence on Education

More than half of the teachers who responded to Forbes Advisor’s survey said they believe AI has had a positive effect on the teaching and learning process. Less than 1 in 5 cited a negative effect.

60% of Educators Use AI in Their Classrooms

AI tools for teacher and student support are growing in popularity. Our survey found that younger teachers are more likely to adopt these tools, with respondents under 26 reporting the highest usage rates.

The Most Common AI Tools Used in the Classroom

Teachers use AI-powered educational games more often than any other AI tools, but adaptive learning platforms and automated grading and feedback systems are also popular.

Concerns Surrounding AI in Education

As the adoption of AI in the classroom proliferates, students, teachers and schools must grapple with how to use these technologies responsibly. Chatbots such as ChatGPT have sparked controversy among educators about their potential to facilitate cheating and generate misinformation. Moreover, professionals and observers have raised critical questions about data privacy, algorithmic bias and access disparities as they relate to AI.

Teachers Worry About Cheating, Lack of Human Interaction in Classrooms

Academic dishonesty tops the list of educators' concerns about AI in education. Teachers also worry that increased use of AI may mean learners receive less human contact.

The Most Common AI Cheating Methods

Most of the teachers we surveyed have observed students using AI—particularly generative AI, which can compose essays and supply answers on demand—to cheat.

The Future of AI in Education

In response to the growing presence of AI in education, organizations like the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and UNESCO have called for a transparent, human-centered approach to the use of these technologies.

ED recommends prioritizing educators' perspectives in developing AI solutions that enhance and support teachers' traditional roles rather than attempt to replace them. Along with state entities such as the California Department of Education, UNESCO advocates for equity-focused AI in education policies aimed at narrowing technological gaps within communities and worldwide.

Although artificial intelligence presents novel concerns for the education sector, most teachers we surveyed reported a positive outlook on the future.

Teachers Want More Education To Understand AI and Use It Ethically

Ninety-eight percent of our survey respondents identified a need for at least some education on ethical AI usage. More than 60% recommended comprehensive education.

Educators Don’t Expect AI To Take Center Stage in Education

Nearly all of the teachers we surveyed predict that artificial intelligence will continue to impact classrooms of the future. However, most don't envision it playing a central role.

The Bottom Line

Today's education professionals are watching a technological revolution unfold in real time as AI-enabled learning platforms, educational games, chatbots, virtual tutors and organizational tools become more widespread every day. More than half of the teachers we surveyed had encountered at least some of these technologies.

As observers on the front lines, teachers are well-positioned to identify major concerns regarding the education sector’s adoption of AI-powered tools. Our survey found that respondents were the most worried about issues like cheating, loss of human interaction, job security, equity and safety.

Despite these concerns, U.S. educators seem optimistic about the potential of AI in the classroom. Acknowledging that artificial intelligence will likely play an expanding role in education, most teachers have already begun to integrate AI tools into their daily work routines.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Artificial Intelligence in Education

How is artificial intelligence used in education.

AI-powered educational technology encompasses tools for teachers, students and administrators. Educational games, adaptive learning platforms, chatbots and intelligent tutoring systems provide individualized support for learners. Automated grading, feedback and planning programs cater to education professionals.

What are the pros and cons of AI in education?

Artificial intelligence can offer personally tailored instruction to students and help reduce administrative work for teachers. AI-powered accommodations can increase accessibility for students with disabilities and English language learners. However, students can also use AI technology to cheat, and some AI tools may provide misinformation. AI could also lead to reduced human contact in the classroom, access disparities and threats to data privacy.

How is AI shaping the future of education?

Forbes Advisor’s survey found that most U.S. teachers expect AI to continue expanding its influence in the education sphere. Nearly all respondents believe schools should teach students how to use AI ethically. As AI becomes more prevalent in education technology, teachers, institutions and government agencies should develop new strategies to ensure academic integrity, promote equitable access to AI tools and address other concerns.

Screens are everywhere in schools. do they actually help kids learn.

An illustration of a young student holding a pen and a digital device while looking at school lessons on the screens of several other digital devices.

A few weeks ago, a parent who lives in Texas asked me how much my kids were using screens to do schoolwork in their classrooms. She wasn’t talking about personal devices. (Smartwatches and smartphones are banned in my children’s schools during the school day, which I’m very happy about; I find any argument for allowing these devices in the classroom to be risible.) No, this parent was talking about screens that are school sanctioned, like iPads and Chromebooks issued to children individually for educational activities.

I’m embarrassed to say that I couldn’t answer her question because I had never asked or even thought about asking. Partly because the Covid-19 era made screens imperative in an instant — as one ed-tech executive told my colleague Natasha Singer in 2021, the pandemic “sped the adoption of technology in education by easily five to 10 years.” In the early Covid years, when my older daughter started using a Chromebook to do assignments for second and third grade, I was mostly just relieved that she had great teachers and seemed to be learning what she needed to know. By the time she was in fifth grade and the world was mostly back to normal, I knew she took her laptop to school for in-class assignments, but I never asked for specifics about how devices were being used. I trusted her teachers and her school implicitly.

In New York State, ed tech is often discussed as an equity problem — with good reason: At home, less privileged children might not have access to personal devices and high-speed internet that would allow them to complete digital assignments. But in our learn-to-code society, in which computer skills are seen as a meal ticket and the humanities as a ticket to the unemployment line, there seems to be less chatter about whether there are too many screens in our kids’ day-to-day educational environment beyond the classes that are specifically tech focused. I rarely heard details about what these screens are adding to our children’s literacy, math, science or history skills.

And screens truly are everywhere. For example, according to 2022 data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, only about 8 percent of eighth graders in public schools said their math teachers “never or hardly ever” used computers or digital devices to teach math, 37 percent said their math teachers used this technology half or more than half the time, and 44 percent said their math teachers used this technology all or most of the time.

As is often the case with rapid change, “the speed at which new technologies and intervention models are reaching the market has far outpaced the ability of policy researchers to keep up with evaluating them,” according to a dazzlingly thorough review of the research on education technology by Maya Escueta, Andre Joshua Nickow, Philip Oreopoulos and Vincent Quan published in The Journal of Economic Literature in 2020.

Despite the relative paucity of research, particularly on in-class use of tech, Escueta and her co-authors put together “a comprehensive list of all publicly available studies on technology-based education interventions that report findings from studies following either of two research designs, randomized controlled trials or regression discontinuity designs.”

They found that increasing access to devices didn’t always lead to positive academic outcomes. In a couple of cases, it just increased the amount of time kids were spending on devices playing games. They wrote, “We found that simply providing students with access to technology yields largely mixed results. At the K-12 level, much of the experimental evidence suggests that giving a child a computer may have limited impacts on learning outcomes but generally improves computer proficiency and other cognitive outcomes.”

Some of the most promising research is around computer-assisted learning, which the researchers defined as “computer programs and other software applications designed to improve academic skills.” They cited a 2016 randomized study of 2,850 seventh-grade math students in Maine who used an online homework tool. The authors of that study “found that the program improved math scores for treatment students by 0.18 standard deviations. This impact is particularly noteworthy, given that treatment students used the program, on average, for less than 10 minutes per night, three to four nights per week,” according to Escueta and her co-authors.

They also explained that in the classroom, computer programs may help teachers meet the needs of students who are at different levels, since “when confronted with a wide range of student ability, teachers often end up teaching the core curriculum and tailoring instruction to the middle of the class.” A good program, they found, could help provide individual attention and skill building for kids at the bottom and the top, as well. There are computer programs for reading comprehension that have shown similar positive results in the research. Anecdotally: My older daughter practices her Spanish language skills using an app, and she hand-writes Spanish vocabulary words on index cards. The combination seems to be working well for her.

Though their review was published in 2020, before the data was out on our grand remote-learning experiment, Escueta and her co-authors found that fully online remote learning did not work as well as hybrid or in-person school. I called Thomas Dee, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, who said that in light of earlier studies “and what we’re coming to understand about the long-lived effects of the pandemic on learning, it underscores for me that there’s a social dimension to learning that we ignore at our peril. And I think technology can often strip that away.”

Still, Dee summarized the entire topic of ed tech to me this way: “I don’t want to be black and white about this. I think there are really positive things coming from technology.” But he said that they are “meaningful supports on the margins, not fundamental changes in the modality of how people learn.”

I’d add that the implementation of any technology also matters a great deal; any educational tool can be great or awful, depending on how it’s used.

I’m neither a tech evangelist nor a Luddite. (Though I haven’t even touched on the potential implications of classroom teaching with artificial intelligence, a technology that, in other contexts, has so much destructive potential .) What I do want is the most effective educational experience for all kids.

Because there’s such a lag in the data and a lack of granularity to the information we do have, I want to hear from my readers: If you’re a teacher or a parent of a current K-12 student, I want to know how you and they are using technology — the good and the bad. Please complete the questionnaire below and let me know. I may reach out to you for further conversation.

Do your children or your students use technology in the classroom?

If you’re a parent, an educator or both, I want to hear from you.
