PhD Salaries and Lifetime Earnings

PhDs employed across job sectors show impressive earning potential:

“…[T]here is strong evidence that advanced education levels continue to be associated with higher salaries. A study by the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce showed that across the fields examined, individuals with a graduate degree earned an average of 38.3% more than those with a bachelor’s degree in the same field. The expected lifetime earnings for someone without a high school degree is $973,000; with a high school diploma, $1.3 million; with a bachelor’s degree, $2.3 million; with a master’s degree, $2.7 million; and with a doctoral degree (excluding professional degrees), $3.3 million. Other data indicate that the overall unemployment rate for individuals who hold graduate degrees is far lower than for those who hold just an undergraduate degree.” - Pathways Through Graduate School and Into Careers , Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and Educational Testing Service (ETS), pg. 3.

Average salaries by educational level and degree (data from the US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2009-2011, courtesy of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce):

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports higher earnings and lower unemployment rates for doctoral degree holders in comparison to those with master’s and bachelor’s degrees:

According to national studies, more education translates not only to higher earnings, but also higher levels of job success and job satisfaction:

“Educational attainment – the number of years a person spends in school – strongly predicts adult earnings, and also predicts health and civic engagement. Moreover, individuals with higher levels of education appear to gain more knowledge and skills on the job than do those with lower levels of education and they are able, to some extent, to transfer what they learn across occupations.” - Education for Life and Work (2012), National Research Council of the National Academies, pg. 66.

Earning Potential in Biomedical Engineering: A Salary Guide

Author: University of North Dakota February 20, 2024

Biomedical engineering offers a promising gateway to rewarding careers, boasting potential average salaries in the six-figure range.

Yet, the journey to these earnings is nuanced, shaped by a mosaic of factors, including one's educational achievements, professional experience, the specific sector within the industry, the nature of the role undertaken and even the geographical setting.

From advanced imaging to artificial organs, technological innovation intertwines with human well-being. Biomedical engineering, in particular, merges engineering, biology and healthcare to create solutions benefiting human health, thus playing a crucial role in developing innovative medical devices and technologies. Biomedical engineers contribute to improving the quality of healthcare, from personalized treatments to addressing global health challenges.

Understanding salary expectations is critical for aspiring biomedical engineers, ensuring they can navigate their careers with clarity and aim for fair compensation that reflects their skills and dedication. This knowledge also enables them to set achievable financial goals aligned with their career aspirations. Continue reading for an insightful overview of the average salaries in biomedical engineering and the diverse factors that influence earning potential.

What is the Average Salary of a Biomedical Engineer?

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , the mean annual wage for biomedical engineers is $108,060. The salary range in this field extends from around $63,420 to over $159,130, illustrating the lucrative potential for professionals across various levels of expertise and experience in the biomedical engineering landscape.

What Factors Influence a Biomedical Salary?

The salary range in biomedical engineering reflects a wide spectrum, influenced by several critical factors. These include educational background, work experience, industry and role as well as geographical location. Each of these elements plays a significant role in determining the compensation of professionals within this diverse and specialized field.

Education Level

In the field of biomedical engineering, educational attainment is a critical factor influencing salary levels, a phenomenon common in many professions. The correlation between education and salary is particularly noticeable in this field. Higher academic qualifications, such as Biomedical Engineering master's or Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. degrees, or specialized certifications, can significantly impact a professional's career trajectory.

These advanced qualifications typically enable individuals to secure higher-level positions within the biomedical engineering sector. Such positions are not only higher in the organizational hierarchy but also entail greater responsibilities. Correspondingly, these roles are often associated with higher financial rewards.

This trend highlights the importance of continuous education and professional development in the biomedical engineering industry. For professionals in this field, investing in further education can be a strategic move to enhance career prospects and achieve higher financial compensation.

Work Experience

In biomedical engineering, the level of work experience significantly influences salary potential. Here's a breakdown of how salaries tend to increase with experience :

  • Entry-level engineers (less than one year of experience): On average, they earn a total compensation of around $66,917.
  • Early-career engineers (one  to four years of experience): Their average total compensation rises to approximately $73,922.
  • Mid-career engineers (five to nine years of experience): At this stage, the average total compensation increases to about $88,738.
  • Experienced engineers: For those with extensive experience, the average total compensation further climbs to around $97,390.

These figures show a clear trend: as biomedical engineers gain more experience in the field, their earning potential progressively increases.

Industry and Role

In biomedical engineering, the choice of industry can significantly impact salary levels. Different industries have distinct work conditions and technical requirements, which contribute to variations in pay.

For example, biomedical engineers in medical and diagnostic laboratories might experience different challenges and rewards compared to their peers in medical instrument manufacturing. This difference in work environment directly influences earnings, demonstrating how industry choice can shape a biomedical engineer's salary.

Additionally, within each sector, the specific role an engineer occupies also plays a role in determining their pay. Positions that demand greater expertise or experience typically offer higher salaries. Examples of top-paying roles include:

Biomedical engineers' salaries vary based on location, influenced by a few important factors. The cost of living is a major one—in areas where it's more expensive to live, salaries are often higher to match. Additionally, regions with a strong biomedical industry or major research institutions tend to offer better pay to attract skilled professionals.

State policies, the local concentration of biomedical companies and the overall economy of an area also affect how much biomedical engineers earn in different places. Therefore, the states that pay the highest salaries for biomedical engineers are:

Beyond state-level variations, salaries also differ within metropolitan areas. The highest-paying areas include:

As they gain experience and pursue advanced degrees or certifications, biomedical engineers can progress to mid-career positions, taking on complex projects or managerial roles. Eventually, they may reach senior or leadership positions, overseeing entire projects, teams or departments. Salaries increase significantly at each stage, based on their growing skill set and contributions to the field.

To advance their careers and boost their earnings, biomedical engineers can pursue further education, obtain relevant certifications and actively seek leadership opportunities. Networking within the biomedical engineering community, staying informed about industry trends and demonstrating a commitment to professional development can also enhance visibility and open doors to career advancement.

Additionally, showcasing a record of successful projects and a willingness to take on challenging assignments can position biomedical engineers for promotions and salary growth.

The Future of Biomedical Engineering and Salary Prospects

The field of biomedical engineering is expected to grow rapidly, with a projected 5% increase in jobs from 2022 to 2032, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This growth is driven by new innovations in healthcare.

Emerging trends like wearable health devices, personalized medicine, 3D bioprinting, artificial intelligence and nanotechnology are changing healthcare. As these technologies become more common, the demand for biomedical engineers skilled in these areas is likely to increase, which could lead to higher salaries.

Specialists in cutting-edge technologies like 3D bioprinting and nanotechnology may be particularly in demand, potentially earning higher salaries. Moreover, challenges like regulatory approvals and data privacy need to be addressed in these fields. As biomedical engineers navigate these challenges, they are poised to be at the forefront of healthcare innovation, potentially enhancing both their professional opportunities and salary potential.
