Homework folders for primary students.
Homework has always been something that I’ve created at the last minute for the students. In the past, it usually ended up being an activity or reading passage that we didn’t get to finish for the day. But then, I wanted to more intentional about my homework. And I wanted to make sure I gave my kids an opportunity to spiral review their prior standards. Click to read this blog post about spiraling your homework! So, here we go. Let’s talk about setting up homework folders for primary students!
All students will get a homework folder. Homework folders should be the plastic material, which is a little more expensive, but if students are using them throughout the year, these hold up best.
(Affiliate Link: Amazon Folders )I suggest going with the plastic covered ones. They tend to stick around and stay in one piece the longest. I also suggest the three prongs on the inside, so that you can hole punch the homework and attach it to the middle. If you don’t have the three prongs, no worries. You can just slide the homework behind your assignment sheet.
Click the image to grab this FREEBIE !
Start with a three-prong folder. Plastic will work best because it’ll keep a little better than the paper folders.
On the left side of the folder, place the assignment list for the entire week.
On the right side of the folder, place the book the child is reading for the week. They have 15 minutes of nightly reading assigned to them, so that’ll be the easiest way to keep up with the book. The picture on the right shows me pointing to the area that parents sign to keep the children accountable for their reading.
Take the Math, Reading, Writing, and Language/Foundations and place them into the three prongs. Front/back is suggested to save paper!
This is a glimpse at one week of second grade with the assignment sheet (which is on the left of your folder), plus the four sheets of work (which either goes into the prongs or into the right side).

Free Printable Kindergarten and First Grade File Folder Quick Reference Guide
This post contains affiliate links.
Create a colorful quick reference guide for kids to look at with lots of different information!
Beginning letters, alphabet writing, long and short vowel sounds, days of the week, months of the year, left and right, time, shapes, colors, number sense up to 10, place value, and clock hands are included!
I made this for my daughter to use during school hours. I used glue to adhere it to the file folder, I wouldn’t suggest that because it made the ink smear slightly. I think tape would have been a lot better.
Instructions:
- Print out the pdf.
- Laminate the pages or put into the notebooks.
- Glue or tape onto a file folder or hole punch and put into a notebook.
The page order doesn’t matter that much. You can place them in any order you want.
A few things that might help.

I am trying to find some introducing numbers pages. The one I have an example of from your website is for “The Number Nine”. It has Kindergarten Math on the top of the page. It has practice writing the number, then draw nine squares, then trace the word, then count the pigs and color, then trace 1-9. I love it for introducing and practicing one number at a time.
I LOVE your website! I have looked in several of the links for kindergarten, but cannot find this particular set of worksheets. Any help, please?
Hi! Thank you! 🙂 I think the ones you are looking for are part of the daily math set

Take home folders: part 1.
I really love how you set up your folders! Thanks for the great ideas. Where did you get those amazing green folders??
Paige- Office Depot!
How do you get your labels to stay on? I've tried them on poly folders and they seem to fall off.
Courtney- I've found the smooth plastic folders work the best! The ones that have a lot of texture stick, but the ends can peel up. Also, make sure you buy the GOOD labels! :) Hope that helps!
Is this ediatable enough to change to spanish? It's so unfortunate there aren't any spanish resources and I don't have time to create any...... :(
I have something very similar, however, this hits it right out the park! "GO" Ms. Liz!
Love this idea!! I will hopefully start teaching in September. I have already put this in my TPT cart to buy once I'm hired. Thank you!
I did the same for my 1st graders one year, but mine said, "to be LEFT at home," "to be sent RIGHT back." They were placed on the LEFT and RIGHT sides of the folder.

Take Home Folder
Your child will bring home a Take Home Folder each night. In this
folder, you will find:
1. Homework sheet for the week.
2. Conduct Report for the 9 weeks.
3. Notes sent home from either the office or me, if necessary.
4. Any homework pages that are assigned.
5. Graded papers once a week.
Homework teaches responsibility and practices much needed skills; therefore, it is considered to be an important part of your child’s learning. Your child’s homework for the week will be sent home on the first school day of the week and will not be due until Friday morning. It is the students’ choice as to when and how he/she decides to complete it. The Homework Sheet will clearly outline your child’s homework for you to see and it will always be explained in class. Please sign the Homework Sheet each night, only if your child completed all of the homework. Please do not sign if your child did not complete all of the homework. Incomplete or not returned homework will result in a loss of recess.
***Please do not allow anyone else to do your child’s homework. If you have any questions please contact me.

8 Innovative Ways to Organize Take-Home Folders
Keep classroom communication organized with these take home folder ideas from teachers.
The take-home folder is one of the most important and essential elements in the home/school relationship. Often times, it’s your best tool for communicating with parents. If you can get your students in the habit of using it every day, it can really help your organization and communication in the classroom. We gathered up some of our favorite take-home folder ideas from teachers around the web. We hope they help inspire you in your classroom this year.
1. Lend a Hand This take home folder helps kids and parents stay organized in a really easy way. Your students can trace their hands in different colors and then paste them to the inside of the folder. This should help them get in the habit of what to keep and send back.

Classroom Management
Classroom ideas, classroom community, sending home student work.
Sending home graded and ungraded student work can become overwhelming quickly. Papers that can stay at home can easily get mixed up with papers that need to be returned to school, and it really is a mess.
Throughout this post, you’ll find Amazon Affiliate links. This means I receive a small commission if you purchase something through that link, at no extra cost to you, that helps keep my blog running and helps fund giveaways!
What student work do I send home?
I send home all student work. Sometimes it’s graded, and sometimes it’s practice, and I just place a checkmark at the top to show that I’ve seen it.
However, this doesn’t include work done in notebooks.
When do I send home student work?
I only send home completed assignments and graded work once a week.
Every Wednesday, I pass out Green Graded Work Folders during pack-up. Students know (because we practice it and I remind them LOTS) to write the date.
Then, parents know to look for the Green Graded Work Folder, take out the papers, and sign the space next to the date.
Parents know anything in the folder is theirs to keep and doesn’t need to return to school.
Even though I call them “Green Graded Work Folders” anything that doesn’t need to come back to school goes in this folder.
Sending Home Student Work on Wednesdays
I picked Wednesdays kind of randomly, but also, kind of with purpose.
Wednesdays give me a little bit of time to grade work from the previous week without needing to spend my weekend grading all the things.
Plus, Wednesdays also give me time after papers are sent home to follow up with students on Thursday and Friday if necessary. I was worried that sending home folders on Fridays would mean they’d be lost to the weekend.
What happens if parents don’t sign?
If parents forget to sign the green graded work folder cover, it’s not really a huge deal. In this case, I highlight that week’s line, and send it home again the next week.
What happens if the papers come back?
If a student returns their graded work folder and there are still papers inside, I take them out, staple them together, hand them to the student, and tell them to give them to their parents. I remind them that these papers get to stay at home.
What about missing Green Graded Work Folders?
Every year, a few students lose their folders. Typically, I give students a new one and we keep it moving.
If I’ve given the same student a new folder more twice, I just staple or paperclip their papers togethers, and send them home on the same day I send home Green Graded Work Folders.
What about papers that need to return to school?
My students have a binder that goes back and forth from school to home daily. Papers, like permission slips, go in the front left pocket.

What is the best essay writer?
The team EssaysWriting has extensive experience working with highly qualified specialists, so we know who is ideal for the role of the author of essays and scientific papers:
- Easy to communicate. Yes, this point may seem strange to you, but believe me, as a person communicates with people, he manifests himself in the texts. The best essay writer should convey the idea easily and smoothly, without overloading the text or making it messy.
- Extensive work experience. To start making interesting writing, you need to write a lot every day. This practice is used by all popular authors for books, magazines and forum articles. When you read an essay, you immediately understand how long a person has been working in this area.
- Education. The ideal writer should have a philological education or at least take language courses. Spelling and punctuation errors are not allowed in the text, and the meaning should fit the given topic.
Such essay writers work in our team, so you don't have to worry about your order. We make texts of the highest level and apply for the title of leaders in this complex business.

Why is the best essay writing service?
On the Internet, you can find a lot of services that offer customers to write huge articles in the shortest possible time at a low price. It's up to you to agree or not, but we recommend that you do not rush to make a choice. Many of these sites will take your money and disappear without getting the job done. Some low-skilled writers will still send you an essay file, but the text will not meet the required parameters.
is the best essay writing service because we provide guarantees at all stages of cooperation. Our polite managers will answer all your questions and help you determine the details. We will sign a contract with you so that you can be sure of our good faith.
The team employs only professionals with higher education. They will write you a high-quality essay that will pass all anti-plagiarism checks, since we do not steal other people's thoughts and ideas, but create new ones.
