How Can We All Help Conserve Nature?

conserve nature conserve life essay

When we speak about conserving nature, we are really talking about taking care of our future, because nature provides essential resources for our survival and enjoyment. We asked an international group of scientists working on different environmental issues worldwide to identify important practical actions that we can all do to help conserve nature. We obtained nearly 100 responses and grouped them into three main categories: (1) Actions to reduce our ecological footprint; (2) Actions to conserve nature; and (3) Actions that help us connect with nature. We briefly explain actions that can be performed daily to reduce our impact on nature, and provide some useful links for further reading.

Protecting Nature to Ensure Our Future

We often forget how much humans depend on nature . Even city-dwellers living in modern skyscrapers need air to breathe, water to drink, and food to eat, all of which are provided by nature. True, you can buy bottled water and ready-to-eat meals in supermarkets, but they were not produced there. Some fruits and vegetables, for example, only grow in tropical countries and cross the globe in refrigerated ship containers, to arrive just ripe to your local supermarket. All drinking water ultimately comes from a natural source, since we still do not have the technology to manufacture large amounts of water in the laboratory [ 1 ]. The same applies to the air we breathe, which is purified and oxygenated by plants [ 2 ]. So, when we speak about preserving nature, we are really also talking about preserving ourselves.

Whereas nature encompasses the natural environment as a whole, the term biodiversity [ 3 ] is used to refer to all living organisms. Biodiversity is ultimately responsible for the services we receive from nature, which are also called Ecosystem Services [ 4 ] or Nature's Contribution to People [ 5 ]. For example, forests containing many different bee species provide pollination services to nearby crop fields. In places where natural forests have been cut down, beekeepers must bring in artificial beehives to guarantee that enough pollinators visit crop flowers to produce fruit [ 6 ]. Other wild organisms, like wasps and birds, act as pest-control agents for agricultural crops, reducing the population of pests that damage those crops, and resulting in higher crop yields.

You are probably thinking that you already knew about this, and that there is not much you can do to preserve air, water, or fruit trees. But even if you live in a big city, far away from oxygen-producing forests, natural water springs, or crop fields, your daily actions can have a strong impact on these natural resources. Spilling a single drop of cooking oil while cleaning the dishes contaminates a million drops of water. Traveling in a vehicle powered by fossil fuels contributes to air pollution and global climate change [ 7 ]. Buying certain processed food ingredients, like palm oil, can contribute to massive deforestation in the tropics, as farmers clear land to grow these crops for money. All these impacts together make up what is called our ecological footprint on nature [ 8 ], which is a measure to quantify our daily life's impact on nature.

We will now share with you some important practical actions that we can all do to help conserve nature, to preserve our own well-being, and to guarantee that natural resources are available for future generations.

What Actions Can We Take to Help Conserve Nature?

We asked an international group of scientists, working on various environmental issues, to provide ideas on what young people can do to help conserve nature. We obtained nearly 100 responses and then organized all of the ideas by grouping them into three main categories: (1) Actions to reduce our ecological footprint ( Figure 1 ); (2) Actions to conserve nature ( Figure 2 ); and (3) Actions to connect with nature ( Figure 3 ). Below we explain each.

Figure 1 - Word cloud showing the key actions that can be taken to reduce our ecological footprint.

Reduce our ecological footprint: Reducing our ecological footprint means placing less demand on nature (read here about the 3Rs—reduce, reuse and recycle; and get some ideas here on how you can help nature). Here are some ways that you can do this:

  • Recycle your rubbish and participate in or help organize recycling campaigns.
  • Avoid littering and participate in or help organize litter clean-ups ( here you can link to a website for volunteering or starting your own beach clean-up).
  • Use less plastic by, for example, carrying a reusable water bottle, saying no to disposable straws and cutlery, avoiding plastic toys, and bringing your own shopping bags (for further ideas on a plastic-free life take a look here ).
  • Swap toys, movies, and books instead of buying new ones.
  • Donate, recycle, and repair electronic devices (see how here ).
  • Use less water when brushing teeth, taking a shower, or washing the dishes.
  • Use less electricity by turning off lights and electronic devices when not in use, using energy-saving light bulbs, and hanging clothes to dry.
  • Use public transport, share a journey with friends (e.g., car-sharing), cycle, or walk when possible.
  • Use less paper by not printing unnecessary things and reading e-books.
  • Turn down the air conditioning when it is hot and use fans if you are still hot-they use much less power.
  • Turn down the heat when it is cold and use sweaters, blankets, and socks to keep warm.
  • Do not waste food and try to buy food that is grown locally and in season.
  • Eat more non-meat proteins (like beans), less dairy, more vegetables, and more organic food when possible.
  • Buy products that do not cause damage to the environment and that have certified labels (such as Rainforest Alliance and Animal Welfare ).
  • Refuse to buy what you do not need, because every item you do not buy reduces the demand for the production of that item. For example, if everyone stopped buying plastic bags, super markets would stop selling them.

Conserve nature: Conserving nature means to protect, preserve and restore biodiversity. Here are some ways that you can do this:

  • Try to prevent your pets from killing/harming wildlife (for some specific advice to help your local birds, see this ).
  • Do not touch or take home wild animals or plants (see some advice here ).
  • Plant native wildflowers, fruit trees, and pollinator-friendly plants in your garden or yard (for some related gardening tips, check out this ).
  • Make compost to improve soil quality and to help insects (check out a guide to composting here ).
  • Build and place bat houses, bird houses, and “bee hotels” in your garden, school grounds, and local green spaces ( here you can learn how make and manage a Bee hotel).
  • Do not buy/keep wild pets at home (such as parrots, song birds, wild cats, or reptiles), in order to avoid supporting illegal trafficking of animals ( here you can find more info about illegal wildlife trade).
  • Be aware of wild animals crossing the road and respect their paths ( here is some further information about the importance of wildlife crossings).

Connect with nature: Connecting with nature means setting aside time to interact with the natural environment. Here are some ways that you can do this:

  • Play outside and spend more time in nature (read this link to find out why this is so important).
  • Organize trips to explore the national parks/nature reserves close to you.
  • Join conservation programs or eco-clubs (see how here ).
  • Participate in nature-focused citizen science initiatives (learn more about citizen science here and see actual projects you can join here and here ).
  • Use books or apps to identify the plants and animals around you (check out a cool app here ).
  • Play games to learn more about nature (check out some fun examples here and here ).
  • Use websites, blogs or social media to help raise awareness on the importance of conserving nature and share all these ideas).

Understanding the importance of nature and biodiversity for our own well-being can really help us to help nature. In this article, we have provided some practical ideas that we can all try to reduce our ecological footprint, conserve nature, and connect with nature. We encourage you to put these ideas into practice and share these actions with your family and friends.

Nature : ↑ The term that encompasses living organisms and the forces responsible for the physical world, such as the weather, mountains, oceans, and landscapes.

Biodiversity : ↑ The word biodiversity means the variety of all living organisms on Earth, and includes different levels of organization—from genes, species, and communities through to entire ecosystems.

Ecosystem Services : ↑ The many benefits that people get from natural ecosystems. These services can be broken down into provisioning (e.g., food and wood), supporting (e.g., soil formation and nutrient cycling), regulating (e.g., clean air and water purification), and cultural (e.g., recreation and eco-tourism).

Climate Change : ↑ Change in global or regional climate patterns, most due to increased levels of greenhouse gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, act like a blanket, trapping heat near the Earth's surface, and raising the temperature.

Ecological Footprint : ↑ This is a measure of how much people take from nature, which is then compared to what natural resources are available to provide for people.

Wildlife conservation is the practice of protecting plant and animal species and their habitats . As part of the world’s ecosystems , wildlife provides balance and stability to nature’s processes. The goal of wildlife conservation is to ensure the survival of these species , and to educate people on living sustainably with other species . The human population has grown exponentially over the past 200 years, to more than seven billion people today, and it continues to rapidly grow. This means natural resources are being consumed faster than ever by the billions of people on the planet. This growth and development also endangers the habitats and existence of various types of wildlife around the world, particularly animals and plants that may be displaced for land development, or used for food or other human purposes. Other threats to wildlife include the introduction of invasive species from other parts of the world, climate change, pollution, hunting, fishing, and poaching. National and international organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the United Nations work to support global animal and habitat conservation efforts on many different fronts. They work with the government to establish and protect public lands, like national parks and wildlife refuges . They help write legislation, such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 in the United States, to protect various species . They work with law enforcement to prosecute wildlife crimes, like wildlife trafficking and illegal hunting (poaching). They also promote biodiversity to support the growing human population while preserving existing species and habitats . National Geographic Explorers, like conservation biologists Camille Coudrat and Titus Adhola, are working to slow the extinction of global species and to protect global biodiversity and habitats . Environmental filmmakers and photographers, like Thomas P. Peschak, are essential to conservation efforts as well, documenting and bringing attention to endangered wildlife all over the world.

Extinction is part of life on Earth. Through much of our planet’s history, species have been forming, evolving and eventually disappearing . Today, however, human activities have dramatically sped up the process. The Earth is losing animals, birds, reptiles and other living things so fast that some scientists believe the planet is entering the sixth mass extinction in its history.

There’s broad agreement that there is a biodiversity crisis , but there are many different views about why protecting it is important.

Some people, cultures and nations believe biodiversity is worth conserving because ecosystems provide many services that support human prosperity, health and well-being. Others assert that all living things have a right to exist, regardless of their usefulness to humans. Today, there’s also growing understanding that nature enriches our lives by providing opportunities for us to connect with each other and the places we care about.

As a conservation biologist , I’ve been part of the effort to value biodiversity for years. Here’s how thinking in this field has evolved, and why I’ve come to believe that there are many equally valid reasons for protecting nature.

Defending every species

Conservation biology is a scientific field with a mission: protecting and restoring biodiversity around the world . It came of age in the 1980s, as humans’ impact on the Earth was becoming alarmingly clear.

In a 1985 essay, Michael Soulé , one of the field’s founders, described what he saw as the core principles of conservation biology . Soulé argued that biological diversity is inherently good and should be conserved because it has intrinsic value. He also proposed that conservation biologists should act to save biodiversity even if sound science isn’t available to inform decisions.

To critics, Soulé’s principles sounded more like environmental activism than science . What’s more, not everyone agreed then or now that biodiversity is inherently good.

After all, wild animals can destroy crops and endanger human lives . Contact with nature can lead to disease . And some conservation initiatives have displaced people from their land or prevented development that might otherwise improve people’s lives .

Valuing nature’s services

Soulé’s essay spurred many researchers to push for a more science-driven approach to conservation. They sought to directly quantify the value of ecosystems and the roles species played in them . Some scholars focused on calculating the value of ecosystems to humans.

They reached a preliminary conclusion that the total economic value of the world’s ecosystems was worth an average US$33 trillion per year in 1997 dollars. At the time, this was nearly twice the global value of the entire world’s financial markets.

This estimate included services such as predators controlling pests that would otherwise ruin crops; pollinators helping to produce fruits and vegetables; wetlands, mangroves and other natural systems buffering coasts against storms and flooding; oceans providing fish for food; and forests providing lumber and other building materials.

Researchers have refined their estimates of what these benefits are worth , but their central conclusion remains the same: Nature has shockingly high economic value that existing financial markets don’t account for.

A second group began to quantify the nonmonetary value of nature for human health, happiness and well-being. Studies typically had people take part in outdoor activities , such as strolling through a green space, hiking in the woods or canoeing on a lake. Later, they measured the subjects’ physical or emotional health .

This research found that spending time in nature tended to reduce blood pressure, lower hormones related to stress and anxiety, decrease the probability of depression and improve cognitive function and certain immune functions. People exposed to nature fared better than others who took part in similar activities in nonnatural settings, such as walking through a city.

Losing species weakens ecosystems

A third line of research asked a different question: When ecosystems lose species, can they still function and provide services ? This work was driven mainly by experiments where researchers directly manipulated the diversity of different types of organisms in settings ranging from laboratory cultures to greenhouses, plots in fields, forests and coastal areas.

By 2010, scientists had published more than 600 experiments, manipulating over 500 groups of organisms in freshwater, marine and land ecosystems. In a 2012 review of these experiments, colleagues and I found unequivocal evidence that when ecosystems lose biodiversity, they become less efficient, less productive and less stable . And they are less able to deliver many of the services that underlie human well-being.

For example, we found strong evidence that loss of genetic diversity reduced crop yields, and loss of tree diversity reduced the amount of wood that forests produced. We also found evidence that oceans with fewer fish species produced less-reliable catches, and that ecosystems with lower plant diversity were more prone to invasive pests and diseases.

Two photos of lawns, one with one type of grass, the other with multiple grasses and clover.

We also showed that it was possible to develop robust mathematical models that could predict reasonably well how biodiversity loss would affect certain types of valuable services from ecosystems.

Many motives for protecting nature

For years, I believed that this work had established the value of ecosystems and quantified how biodiversity provided ecosystem services. But I’ve come to realize that other arguments for protecting nature are just as valid, and often more convincing for many people.

I have worked with many people who donate money or land to support conservation. But I’ve never heard anyone say they were doing it because of the economic value of biodiversity or its role in sustaining ecosystem services.

Instead, they’ve shared stories about how they grew up fishing with their father, held family gatherings at a cabin or canoed with someone who was important to them. They wanted to pass on those experiences to their children and grandchildren to preserve familial relationships. Researchers increasingly recognize that such relational values – connections to communities and to specific places – are one of the most common reasons why people choose to conserve nature.

I also know many people who hold deep religious beliefs and are rarely swayed by scientific arguments for conservation. But when Pope Francis published his 2015 encyclical Laudato si’: On Care for Our Common Home and said God’s followers had a moral responsibility to care for his creation, my religious relatives, friends and colleagues suddenly wanted to know about biodiversity loss and what they might do about it.

Surveys show that 85% of the world’s population identifies with a major religion . Leaders of every major religion have published declarations similar to Pope Francis’ encyclical, calling on their followers to be better stewards of Earth . Undoubtedly, a large portion of humanity assigns moral value to nature.

Research clearly shows that nature provides humanity with enormous value. But some people simply believe that other species have a right to exist, or that their religion tells them to be good stewards of Earth. As I see it, embracing these diverse perspectives is the best way to get global buy-in for conserving Earth’s ecosystems and living creatures for the good of all.

Introduction

We are always happy to get gifts from others, as they make us feel special and valued. Nature is such a gift given to us that it must be treated equally like any other gift. We might think that since nature and its resources are available for free, we can utilise them in whichever way we want. This approach towards nature is not good, and this is what is discussed in this save our nature essay.

The minute we step out of our homes, we are entering the space of nature, and everything we see around us forms a part of it. The plants, trees, flowers, sky, soil, water, sun, insects, and wind all fall under nature. Therefore, we must keep our nature as beautiful as it is.

Importance of Saving Nature

Even though nature has a significant role in supporting our lives, each component has a specific role in maintaining the balance of nature. While we get food to eat, air to breathe and water to drink from nature, we also enjoy the natural beauty and sounds as they lift our moods. Nature provides us with many resources, and we return its kindness by overexploiting and harming nature. Thus, as people living on Earth, we need to be conscious of our actions on surroundings that disrupt its natural flow.

Human activities are the main villain that harms nature. Earlier, it was not evident the dangerous effects of human exploitation on nature. When we think that we have only cut down a single tree, which might not damage nature, remember that there would be hundreds of others who think like you. So, one tree becomes hundreds, thousands and millions. At this pace, nature will soon exhaust its resources, and we will be suffering from various natural disasters and diseases. To put it simply, our mere existence would be threatened. This is why we need to preserve nature. In this how to save nature essay, we explore a few ways to coexist with nature.

Ways to Save Nature

We must be mindful of the fact that though nature has infinite resources, they will soon get depleted if we use them carelessly. As people started moving to cities, this led to the clearance of land and deforestation. The impact is environmental threats, such as green gas emissions, global warming, extinction of natural flora and fauna, etc. And the price we will have to pay will be huge.

To save ourselves from natural calamities and protect nature, let us move towards sustainable practices. By using eco-friendly products and discarding plastic and other non-degradable materials, we are doing a huge favour to our nature. We can also join our hands to reduce pollution by segregating wastes, using public transport and avoiding the use of pesticides. This save our nature essay from BYJU’S will be helpful for children to understand that if we take care of these trivial things, we can ensure the long life of nature.

Importance of Conservation of Biodiversity

Conservation of biodiversity is important for many reasons. Here are some of the main reasons to conserve biodiversity:

  • Process of Food Chain: Different species of animals and plants serve as the source of food for other animals and living organisms. Thus, conserving biodiversity help to keep the food chain among the living organisms.
  • Nutritional Needs: The decline in the variety of plants and animals would mean the decline in the variety of food we eat. So, this is likely to result in nutritional deficiencies.
  • Cleaner Air: Plants and trees have a greater ability to purify the air and keep the atmosphere clean. As there is a decrease in the number and types of trees and plants, it impacts the quality of air in a negative way.
  • Better Cultivation of Crops:   Fertility of soil is maintained by many insects, organisms and microorganisms work on different levels. So we have to maintain the level of microorganism which is better for the cultivation of crops.
  • For Medical Reason s: For making different medicines many species of trees and plants are used so as to cure various diseases.

Methods to Conserve Biodiversity

Methods that can help in the conservation of biodiversity are

  • Control Population: The greater the population the higher the needs which would result in further exploitation of flora and fauna and decline in biodiversity. For the conservation of biodiversity, we have to control the human population and allow other species of plants and animals to replenish on our planet.
  • Control Pollution: The changing climate, deteriorating air quality and the growing amount of pollution on land and water bodies are leading to different types of diseases in many. It is essential to reduce the activities leading to pollution so as to conserve biodiversity.
  • Reduce Deforestation: Due to deforestation, there is the loss of habitat. Due to this reason, wild animals are unable to survive in the new environment and die.
  • Avoid Wastage: We need to understand that natural resources are not only essential for us but are also vital for the survival of other species. We must thus utilize only as much as we require them so that these remain available in abundance in nature for future use.
  • Spread Awareness: Apart from this, one of the best methods to conserve biodiversity is by spreading awareness. The government can do so at a bigger level. While we can spread awareness by word of mouth and through social media.

Conservation of biodiversity is of utmost importance. We must all make efforts to conserve biodiversity rather than contributing towards its declination. Thus, the richness of biodiversity is essential for the survival of living beings on Earth.

Essay on Save Water Save Life

Water is the most important and valuable natural resource on Earth. It sustains all life. There is no life without water. Water is not only important for human beings but for the entire ecosystem. Without enough water, the existence of humans, as well as animals, is next to impossible. After fresh air, water is the second most important natural resource for the survival of any living being.

Water is necessary for the survival of each living creature on this planet, be it a small worm, plant, or full-grown tree.  Animals and plants  cannot survive without water. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available  is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water.

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance. Therefore, water conservation is important to save life on this planet.

Importance of Water:

The basic use of water is drinking, bathing, agriculture, irrigation, hospitality, factories, etc.

Water helps in blood circulation and improves metabolism in the human body

The entire aquatic ecosystem is located in water. It is a home for all the aquatic animals

Water is a major source of transportation after land and air.

Water aids in saliva secretion and oxygen delivery to our bodily cells.

Some countries have abundant water resources for their residents and serve        the people, whereas others lack natural resources even for survival.

Depletion of fresh water has become a threat to our existence. According to some scientists, the quantity and the quality of water are degrading day by day. Although Earth is covered with almost 71% of water, the quality is that we cannot use it in day-to-day life for domestic purposes. Water quality is so poor that people in some places are prone to several water-borne diseases such as Eluru, caused by contaminated water.

These instances are eye-opening examples and should be taken seriously for better living conditions for us and our future generation.

Below are the Reasons for Shortage of Fresh Water:

Growth of population leads to excessive consumption of water.

Daily excessive wastage of water.

The rapid growth of industries has increased the problem of proper disposal of waste material from them. The waste products from these industries contain extremely poisonous elements that are polluting the rivers and other water bodies.

Pesticides and chemical fertilisers that are used to treat crops also pollute the fresh water.

Sewage waste that is dumped into the rivers is making the water unsuitable for drinking and washing causing several water-borne diseases like cholera, jaundice and typhoid.

Use of plastics and disposing them carelessly in the water bodies are affecting aquatic life and further disturbing the entire ecosystem.

Global warming is another major reason for the scarcity of water on earth. According to several types of research, because of global warming, the world will face more stress for water scarcity till the year 2050.

We now need to be aware of the depletion of fresh water and take adequate    measures to stop this.

Saving Water: Need of the Hour

Many places face extreme water scarcity due to extremely bad weather conditions, leading to less rainfall and groundwater depletion. In other parts of the world, groundwater is either unusable or overused. As the world's population is growing, so increase in industries and globalisation, causing groundwater to be overused and resulting in water scarcity.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that many people on this planet don't have access to clean and fresh drinking water. These situations are becoming worse day by day, and we need an immediate plan to control this situation. Various collective measures have to be taken by every individual on this planet and the government of every country to control water scarcity.

Government should impose some strict rules for the conservation of water. The government and the citizens have to take the initiative to create awareness and promote the “conservation of water.” One such initiative taken by the Modi government in India was “JANSHAKTI FOR JALSHAKTI.” This programme began as a means of working toward a brighter future.

Initiatives taken by Some State Governments:

The Punjab government contributed to saving water resources by avoiding waterlogging and fixing the drain  leakage.

The Rajasthan government has taken the initiative to construct small ponds, which  helped the local people of Rajasthan in many ways.

Villages of Telangana have constructed water tanks to conserve rainwater for future use.

These states are an inspiration, and others should also take a step forward to conserve and clean the water, water bodies, and groundwater.

Water saving should be and is the universal responsibility of every human being, living on this Earth.

There are many ways in which we can save water and reduce their pollution:

Be responsible to save water daily. Use only the required amount of water and avoid wastage. We should use water wisely.

We should use a washing machine to full capacity for washing clothes.

We should not let the tap run while washing hands and face.

We should water plants in the evening or early morning to minimise evaporation.

We should make provisions to store rainwater on rooftops and reuse the water for household purposes.

Bigger Communities and farmers should adapt to the practice of Rainwater harvesting.

The industrial waste should be treated properly instead of dumping it into rivers.

We should stop using plastics and dispose of them in an adequate way.

We can make people aware about water problems by means of social campaigns and other ways.

We should educate our children about water saving from an early age.

Reusing the water is an important way to save and prevent the scarcity of water. Bathing water can be recycled and used for planting or cleaning.

Rainwater harvesting is the method of collecting rainwater and conserving them for future use.

Conservation of groundwater is another important method in the preservation of groundwater and using it in the future.

 Prevention of waterlogging.

We cannot imagine our lives without water. It is unfortunate that mankind has neglected this precious gift from God. Conservation of water is a necessity to save life. All living organisms on this planet need water to survive. If we do not give importance to saving or conservation of water then our future generations will face water scarcity.

Conserving Fresh Water for Life on Earth

Freshwater systems are in trouble. But with a fresh approach, we can change the course for the better.

Fast moving water splashes in whitewater rapids.

Water connects us all.

If water is the lifeblood of the planet, rivers, lakes and wetlands are the hard-working systems that keep it pumping.

These systems—which also include springs, deltas and intricate underground networks—feed communities, shape cultures and sustain the diversity of life on Earth.

But for too long, we’ve undervalued our freshwater ecosystems. We’ve over-extracted, overfished and over-engineered them. Now, these ecosystems are in trouble.

We need fresh water, and fresh water needs us.

Threats to the world's freshwater systems are stacking up.

Populations of monitored freshwater plants and animals have declined by 83% since 1970—far greater than any other biome.

Only 1/3 of the world’s longest rivers remain free-flowing.

Wetlands are disappearing three times faster than tropical forests.

Half of all people on the planet now live in water-stressed areas.

Deforestation, fragmentation from dams, unsustainable farming and fishing, and unchecked pollution are only adding to the increasingly frequent and damaging impacts of climate change.

But there is hope. Freshwater systems that are degraded can recover—and they can recover quickly. Where freshwater ecosystems remain healthy and connected, we can protect them.

Conservation of Nature Essay In English

Conservation of Nature Essay In English - 2000 in words

Conservation of nature is related to the conservation of natural resources. These mainly include water, sunlight, atmosphere, minerals, land, vegetation and animals. Some of these resources are being over-utilised, due to which they are getting reduced at a faster rate. We should understand the importance of conserving nature and take concrete steps to ensure ecological balance. Conservation of nature refers to the conservation of naturally occurring resources without any human intervention.

Short and Long Essay on Conservation of Nature in English

Essay 1 (300 words).

Nature fulfills our basic needs by providing us with water, land, sunlight and trees and plants. These resources can be used to manufacture various things which certainly make human life more convenient and comfortable.

Unfortunately, man has become so engrossed in inventing new things instead of using these resources that he has almost forgotten the importance of preserving them. As a result, many of these resources are depleting at a rapid rate and if this continues, the existence of humans as well as other living organisms on the earth will be in trouble.

Conservation of nature means protection of forests, land, water bodies and conservation of natural resources is the protection of resources like minerals, fuels, natural gases so as to ensure that all these are available in abundance for human use. . There are many ways in which common man can help in the conservation of nature. Here a detailed description of some such ways can be of great benefit to human life:-

limited use of water

Water should be used wisely. If water is not used properly then the day is not far when we will have to yearn for even a little water. Water can be used properly in many ways like turning off the running water while brushing your teeth, bathing with bucket water instead of fountain, using RO waste water to plants or using it to clean the house. By doing so that the water does not spoil in excess.

limited use of electricity

It is also necessary to limit the use of electricity for the conservation of nature. We can save electricity in many ways such as by turning off the electrical equipment especially when they are not in use or by using such bulb or tube light which consumes the least amount of electricity, for example LED light.

By growing more and more trees and vegetables

Plant as many trees as possible, only then the trees that are being cut every day will be compensated. Try growing vegetables at home to restrict the use of chemical fertilizers used in professional farming. Apart from this people can make their valuable contribution by limiting the use of paper, employing rainwater harvesting system, limiting the use of cars and spreading awareness about conservation of nature.

Essay 2 (400 words)

Nature has given us many gifts like air, water, land, sunlight, minerals, plants and animals. All these gifts of nature make our planet a habitable place. Without any of these the existence of human life on earth would not be possible. Now, while these natural resources exist in abundance on Earth, unfortunately the need for most of them has increased over the centuries due to the increase in human population.

Many of these natural resources are being used at a faster rate while their production capacity is less. Thus there is a need to conserve nature and save the natural resources provided by nature. Here is a detailed look at some of the ways in which these resources can be conserved:-

reducing water consumption

Water is available in abundance on earth, so people do not consider it necessary to pay much attention to its decreasing quantity before using it. If we keep using water at this fast pace, then surely we may have to face serious consequences in future. To save water, we can use some simple things like turning off the tap during brushing, using the water in the washing machine according to the amount of clothes and giving the remaining water to the plants.

by reducing the use of electricity

Electricity can be made only by saving electricity. That is why it is suggested to have limited use of electricity. Just taking care such as turning off the lights before leaving your room, turning off electrical appliances after use, and using fluorescent or LED bulbs as much as possible can be an important step in saving electricity.

using limited paper

Paper is made from trees. Using more paper means encouraging deforestation which is a matter of concern in today's time. We need to make sure that we use only as much paper as is required. Taking print out and using e-copy has to be stopped.

spread awareness

It is very important to spread awareness about the conservation of nature and adopt the right method of the method used for this. This goal can be achieved only when more and more people understand its importance and help in whatever way they can.

Apart from this, it is also very important to plant more and more trees. People can contribute towards reducing air pollution by using shared transport for travel and by employing rainwater harvesting system to conserve nature.

Essay 3 (500 words)

Conservation of nature refers to the conservation of all those resources which are created naturally without the help of humans. These include water, air, sunlight, land, forests, minerals, plants and animals. All these natural resources make life on earth worth living. Human life is not possible without air, water, sunlight and other natural resources present on the earth. Therefore, to maintain life and environment on earth, it is very important to conserve these resources. Here is a look at the natural resources on earth and the ways to conserve them:-

types of natural resources

  • Renewable Resources:- These are the resources that can be regenerated naturally such as air, water and sunlight.
  • Non-renewable resources:- These are the resources which either do not regenerate or are formed very slowly like fossil fuels and minerals etc.
  • Organic: These come from living beings and organic material like plants and animals .
  • Abiotic: These are derived from non-living things and non-organic substances. It includes air, water and land, as well as metals such as iron, copper and silver.

Natural resources are also divided into categories such as actual resources, reserve resources, stock resources and potential resources based on their level of development.

Nature Conservation Methods

Conservation of nature is a serious matter that needs immediate attention.

Most of nature's resources are depleting at a rapid rate. The reason for this is that the demand for these resources is high while the rate of their creation is low. However, we need to understand that nature has given us all the resources we need in abundance. We only need to use the available natural resources wisely. To conserve these resources, we should follow the below mentioned methods:

limited use

Water and electricity are two such things which are being wasted the most in today's time. It is necessary for us to understand the importance of saving both of them. Try to use as much water as you need. The same rule will have to be applied to electricity. Use electrical appliances wisely and turn them off when not in use. Similarly other resources like paper, petroleum and gas should also be used in a limited rate.

make nature green again

Do more and more afforestation instead of cut trees for the manufacture of wooden paper, furniture and other items. Apart from this, ensure cleanliness around your area and do not throw waste products in water bodies and other places.

Lastly, spread as much awareness as possible about the importance of conserving nature.

The consumption of natural resources exceeds its production. It is the duty of each one of us to stop the wastage of these gifts of nature and start using them wisely so that ecological balance can be maintained on the earth. By following the above-given methods, we can contribute to the conservation of nature.

Essay 4 (600 words)

Conservation of nature is basically the conservation of all the resources that nature has presented to mankind. It includes minerals, water bodies, land, sunlight and atmosphere etc. and also includes conservation of flora and fauna. All these gifts given by nature help in creating a balanced environment and all these are suitable for the existence of human beings and the existence of other organisms on earth. Therefore conservation of nature is very important.

Natural resources are classified on the basis of their characteristics. Here's a look at this classification, with well-planned ways to preserve each:

classification of natural resources

Natural resources are mainly classified on the basis of their capacity to be renewed, source of development and level of development. These are further divided into sub categories. Their detailed information is as follows:

Some resources are renewable while others are non-renewable. Here's a detailed look at both these categories:

  • Renewable Resources : These resources are those which are naturally regenerated. These include air, water, land and sunlight.
  • Non-renewable Resources : These resources are either generated very slowly or do not form naturally. Minerals and fossil fuels are some examples of this category.

On the basis of their origin, natural resources are divided into two types:

  • Abiotic: These are the resources that are formed from non-living things and non-organic substances. Some examples of these types of natural resources include water, air, land, and metals such as iron, copper, gold and silver.
  • Biological: These are the resources that arise from organic matter such as living beings, plants and animals. Fossil fuels are also included in this category as they are derived from decaying organic matter.

On the basis of the level of development, natural resources are classified in the following manner:

  • Actual Resources: The development of these resources is dependent on the availability and cost of technology. These resources are used at the present time.
  • Reserve Resource: That part of the actual resource which can be successfully developed and used in future is called reserve resource.
  • Potential Resources: These are resources that exist in some areas but need some improvement before they can actually be used.
  • Stock Resources: These are the resources on which surveys have been done for their use but due to lack of technology are yet to be utilized.

Different ways of conserving nature

Whether renewable or non-renewable, organic or non-organic, nature's resources must be conserved. Here are some of the ways that the government and individuals should use to conserve nature:

  • Overuse of natural resources should be stopped. The available resources need to be used wisely without wastage.
  • Hunting of wild animals should be stopped for the conservation of wildlife.
  • Farmers should be taught the method of mixed cropping, the use of fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, and crop rotation. There is a need to encourage the use of manures, organic fertilizers and biofertilizers.
  • Deforestation should be controlled.
  • Rain water harvesting system should be installed.
  • The use of renewable resources such as solar, hydro and wind energy should be encouraged.
  • The system of reuse of water used in agricultural processes should be followed.
  • Car-pooling is a good way to reduce fossil fuel consumption.
  • Limit paper use and encourage recycling.
  • Save energy by using fluorescent bulbs instead of old light bulbs so that electricity can be saved. Also turn off lighting devices and electronic items when not needed.

Conservation of nature is of utmost importance to ensure a balanced environment although sadly many natural resources are depleting rapidly. By following the above mentioned methods, every person should contribute for the conservation of nature.

Conservation of nature implies the conservation of resources that are formed naturally, without any human intervention. The importance of conservation of natural resources has been stressed upon often enough as it is essential for maintaining a balanced environment on earth. Here are essays of varying lengths on the topic to help you with it in your exam.

Long and Short Essay on Conservation of Nature in English

Conservation of nature essay 1 (200 words).

Conservation of nature is basically the conservation of resources such as air, water, sunlight, land, vegetation, animal life and minerals. All these resources are obtained from nature without any interference from the mankind. These resources are further employed to produce various things that make the lives of human beings as well as other living beings comfortable.

Natural resources are broadly categorized into renewable resources and non-renewable resources. Renewable resources are the ones that replenish naturally. These include air, water and sunlight. The use of these resources is encouraged over the non-renewable resources as the latter do not replenish and are fast depleting.

Conservation of nature is an issue that must be taken seriously. While the governments of different countries are employing various means to conserve nature, individuals must also come forward to contribute their bit in this direction.

Some of the ways in which the common man can help in the conservation of nature is by planting trees, restricting the use of paper, stopping wastage of water and electricity, stopping ill practices such as hunting of animals, and employing rain water harvesting systems. It does not take much to put the above mentioned ideas to practice. However, if each one of us contributes our bit to it, the difference it will bring about would be tremendous.

Conservation of Nature Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction.

Nature fulfils our basic requirement to live by providing us air, water, land, sunlight and plants. These resources are further used to manufacture various things that make life more convenient and comfortable for the human beings. Unfortunately, man has grown so engrossed in over-utilizing these resources to invent newer things that he has almost forgotten the importance of conserving them. As a result, many of these resources are depleting at a fast pace and if it continues this way then the survival of human beings as well as other living beings on Earth would become very difficult.

What Conservation of Nature Means

Conservation of nature means the preservation of forests, land, water bodies and conservation of resources such as minerals, fuels, natural gases, etc to ensure that all these continue to be available in abundance. There are many ways in which the common man can help in the conservation of nature. Here are some of those that can be done easily and can make a huge difference:

Restrict Usage of Water

Water must be used wisely else that day wouldn’t be far when we will have to pay a huge price for it. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, limit the number of showers, use the waste RO water to water the plants or clean the house so as to ensure wise usage of water.

Limit Usage of Electricity

Limiting the usage of electricity is also essential for the conservation of nature. Simple things such as turning off the electric appliances when they are not in use and switching to energy saving lights, such as LED lights, to save electricity can help in this direction.

Plant Trees and Grow Vegetables

It advised to plant as many trees as possible to make up for those that cut each day. Also grow vegetables at home to restrict the usage of chemical fertilizers used in professional farming.

Besides these, people can do their bit by limiting the usage of paper, employing rain water harvesting system, restricting usage of cars and lastly by spreading awareness about the conservation of nature.

To keep earth in its serene and pristine form, it is very essential to conserve nature and its resources in their present form, maintaining both quality and quantity. “Conservation of Nature” relates to not just conserving one or two elements of nature, but all the elements – water, soil, forests, flora & fauna, oceans, air, plants, insects, birds, etc, which together constitute nature or our natural habitat. In the preceding essay we have gone through some of the methods for conserving nature, which indeed will help us in achieving the goal of nature conservation.

Conservation of Nature Essay 3 (400 words)

Nature has given us several gifts such as air, water, land, sunlight, minerals, plants and animals. All these gifts of nature make our planet a place worth living. Survival on Earth would not be possible without any of these. Now, while these natural resources are present on Earth in abundance, unfortunately the requirement of most of these has increased tremendously over the centuries due to growth in human population.

How to Conserve Nature and Its Resources

Many of the natural resources are being consumed at a far greater speed as compared to their rate of production. There is thus a need for conservation of nature and the natural resources it offers. Here is a look at some of the ways in which these resources can be conserved:

Reduce Water Consumption

Water is available in abundance on Earth and this is one of the reasons people do not think much before using it. However, if we continue to use it at this pace we may not be left with as much of it in the future. Simple things such as turning the tap off while brushing, using washing machine only when its tub is full, using the left over water in the bottles to water the plants, etc can help in this direction.

Reduce Usage of Electricity

Energy saved energy produced. It thus suggested to restrict the usage of electricity. Simple practices such as turning off the lights before leaving your room, turning off the electric appliances after use and switching to energy saving fluorescent or LED bulbs can make a difference.

Restrict Usage of Paper

Paper made from trees. Using more paper means encouraging deforestation which is one of the main causes of concern in today’s time. Make sure you use only as much paper as required. Stop taking print outs and use e-copies instead to do your bit.

Use Newer Agricultural Methods

The government must teach methods such as mixed cropping, crop rotation and appropriate use of pesticides, insecticides, manures, bio fertilizers and organic fertilizers to the farmers.

Spread Awareness

Spreading awareness about the conservation of nature and the methods to used for the same is very important. It can achieved only when more and more people understand its importance and the ways in which they can help.

Apart from this, it is important to plant more and more tress, contribute towards lowering the air pollution by using shared transport and employing rain water harvesting systems to conserve nature.

Nature consists of everything that surrounds us which also not human made. The trees, forests, rivers, rivulets, soil, air all are part of nature. Keeping the nature and its resources intact is very essential for the continuation of life on earth. It would be hard to imagine life on earth, which has a damaged natural environment. Therefore, taking appropriate steps to conserve nature in its pristine form must remain a priority for the human race. Only humans bestowed with power and ability to help save the nature in its purest forms.

In the Amazon, a new way to live off nature

conserve nature conserve life essay

SHARAMENTSA, Ecuador — More than 20 years ago, Nantu Canelos had a vision. The Indigenous leader saw in dreams how the wooden huts in this secluded Amazonian community glowed from within as night enveloped the lush, surrounding jungle.

This village of 100 people is enclosed by some of Ecuador’s biggest oil reserves. For more than 40 years, the local Indigenous people, the Achuar, have been advocating to stop oil development, which has ravaged large swaths of the Ecuadorian Amazon. But even as they fought against fossil fuels, gasoline was their only option to light their homes and power the boats tied to their livelihood. This area has the thinnest electric coverage in the country.

But now a smattering of solar panels across 12 villages in a couple of Ecuador’s deeply forested eastern provinces are making Canelos’s vision materialize. Every morning, before dawn, his people pass around a bowl of wayusa, a traditional drink made from a local plant that helps bring their dreams into focus. In them, they believe, lies the path of their communities’ future.

Now solar power is shaping how they go about daily life in ways big and small, from how they get to work to how they negotiate their connections to the world beyond the Amazon.

A new form of transportation

conserve nature conserve life essay

In this secluded part of the jungle where there are no roads, rivers are the highways. “Peque peques,” the commonly used small gasoline-powered boats, announce their arrival from several kilometers away.

Now their roar is giving way to the silent glide of solar boats. These vessels move more slowly and leave no trace of gasoline in the water — another plus for communities that rely on the river for drinking water, to bathe and to prepare food.

conserve nature conserve life essay

Loaded with panels on their roofs, four boats now circulate across 12 Achuar communities near the border with Peru. Kara Solar , a nonprofit organization that promotes solar energy in this region, gave local residents the boats, which they are in charge of building, fixing and running. The group, which is funded by outside donations, wants to add 10 more boats over the next two years.

Every Saturday, Domingo Mukucham takes passengers back and forth from Wichimi, a small village of 43 families deep in the forest, to Nunkui Port in Taisha, the nearest town. Before, people had to pay $10 for a peque peque trip or walk seven hours to get there. The ride in the solar boat, dubbed Wampi after a local fish, takes four hours and is free.

This helps family budgets go further. Mothers can collect government help in Taisha and sell bananas and cassava, or buy medicine and clothes for their kids.

And children now have a safe way to get to school. Before, they had to cross a rickety suspension bridge. When it rained, they covered themselves with large banana leaves, though the biggest risk was falling into the river. Now, the number of children who show up to school from nearby communities has more than doubled, said Nella Atamain, who teaches math, literature and art.

Power to schools

For years, Las Tunas school in Kapawi, an Achuar community 30 minutes from Wichimi by plane, had monitors and computers but no electricity to run them. The only way to power up in most of these villages is through gasoline generators. Running one for a few hours a day can cost up to $100 a month — an unaffordable luxury for families that survive on an average monthly income of $90. The province of Pastaza, where Kapawi sits, is one of the poorest in Ecuador, with more than 60 percent of its residents living on less than $3 per day.

But last year, armed with drills and cables, a cadre of Achuar technicians hooked up the school to solar panels donated by Kara Solar. Satellite technology, also powered by the sun, powers a WiFi network.

Now students do their homework on laptops and research other cultures around the world. Those close to graduating are already using the new tools to learn how to promote tourism in their community.

Aside from math and spelling, Luis Mukucham, the school principal, wants to offer a new subject to teach children about solar power and how to harness it. “I want the Achuar youth to become interested in making panels and batteries and even a robot,” he said.

The new panels also feed the home of Bernabé Aragón, a teacher who had been paying for gasoline out of his own pocket so students and their parents had a place to charge up and surf the web. Now he can offer that free.

“I want to teach them about computers, about technology and the correct use of the internet, which is very important,” he said, as he printed out school tests with his new solar electricity.

A solar economy

conserve nature conserve life essay

For generations, young men farmed the land, built huts or left their village to find work outside the jungle. Now solar panels are opening up other options.

In the Kapawi Solar Center, an open structure overlooking the Pastaza River, 20 solar panels power a dozen outlets strapped to bamboo poles. There, technicians such as Óscar Mukucham can charge up and hold workshops on how to install panels.

As a boy, Mukucham, now 23, had visions of solar boats moving through the river. Now he teaches others how to maintain them in the Amazon humidity.

Others, such as Canelos, have found a market for this expertise beyond Ecuador. Canelos has given virtual and face-to-face workshops in Peru, Brazil and Suriname.

conserve nature conserve life essay

Solar power is also fueling eco-tourism. The Kapawi Ecolodge, a hotel managed by the community, boasts 64 panels that illuminate 10 cabins, the dining room and other hotel facilities for 24 hours a day.

The solar boats are so quiet, they make for ideal vessels for nature tours: They don’t scare away dolphins or birds.

A window into the world

conserve nature conserve life essay

Along with houses and boats, the sun is now powering cellphones, providing residents a handheld window into the world. Web surfing has gone from a rare indulgence to a daily activity. While before every charge cost money — and pollution from gasoline generators — Kapawi residents can now charge up free.

They can text back and forth with family in other communities, or download tutorials to learn new skills, for example, on how to become better builders.

conserve nature conserve life essay

The day after the internet was installed in Kapawi, Elena Gualinga, a 31-year-old mother of four, learned how to download movies and soap operas on her cellphone. Aragón, the schoolteacher, showed her the best websites and helped her create a Facebook account.

In Sharamentsa, a 30-minute boat ride from Kapawi, Luciano Peas captains Tapiatpia, or electric fish, his village’s solar boat. He plugs in his phone every night to learn English online so he can better interact with tourists.

This community now has solar-powered radio, which it uses to communicate with nearby villages and Puyo, the regional capital. This gives residents a way to quickly call for airplanes in case of emergencies, or invite other villages to sporting events.

Before, relaying those messages took more effort and time.

Life after dark

conserve nature conserve life essay

Before solar power, the villages became pitch black after 6 p.m. Piercing the darkness was expensive — and cumbersome since residents had to boat in fuel, flashlights and batteries.

Now, just as in Canelos’s dream, each of the 28 huts in Sharamentsa is illuminated by solar lights, donated by Nia Tero , another foreign nonprofit foundation working in the Amazon. The small white solar lamps enable the village to squeeze out at least four more hours after sundown.

conserve nature conserve life essay

Lamps now shine in common areas, such as the volleyball court, to avoid encounters with snakes, previously a common occurrence.

Residents now cook together and eat later in the evening. They play music at their parties and dance to cumbia, reggaeton and traditional Achuar songs.

conserve nature conserve life essay

For Canelos, the lamps and panels are enabling a bigger vision: powering the Amazon without scarring it with roads and poles. Solar energy connects them to the world beyond their home, while preserving the ancient traditions that have sprouted from its rich rainforest floor.

“We cannot talk about the fight against extractive activities if we are consuming fuel,” he said. “Just as the sun makes life possible on the planet, it also allows the Achuar to keep their culture alive.”
