  •   or an email address of the email domains chemie.uni-hamburg.de, informatik.uni-hamburg.de, zbh.uni-hamburg.de, hs.uni-hamburg.de, physik.uni-hamburg.de, physnet.uni-hamburg.de, uke.de or zmnh.uni-hamburg.de

to communicate and submit the above mentioned documents .

Publication of the dissertation

After a successful disputation, you will receive a preliminary certificate from the study office, which does not entitle you to bear the doctorate. In addition, we will send you a personalized "routing slip for the publication of the dissertation". If the printed copy deviates from the test copy, approval must be obtained from the person specified in the protocol.

On the routing slip you confirm the submission of the deposit copies as well as the electronic publication at the appropriate office. The State Library sends a letter to the Mathematics Study Office for every publication that has taken place, which is sufficient as proof of publication.

For information on publishing your dissertation in the State Library, please refer to this FAQ .

The dissertation should be published within one year. After the publication you will receive the doctoral certificate. This enables you to carry the doctorate.

We would like to point out that the issuing of the certificate after the disputation can take a period of 1-2 months.

Termination of Supervision Relationship/Discontinuation of doctorate

If for compelling reasons a supervisor chooses to terminate the supervisory relationship during the course of dissertation work, then he or she must inform the doctoral committee chair without undue delay of the reasons therefor.

planning the oral defense

Time schedule based on the regulations in the MIN Doctoral Degree Regulations and the decision of the Subject Doctoral Committee PHYSICS, 18th meeting on 30.04.2014:

  • The evaluators have 6 weeks to submit their reports from date of assignment.
  • After receipt of all reports, the entire examination committee decides on the basis of the reports on the acceptance or rejection of the dissertation, the determination of the dissertation grade as well as on the admission of the doctoral candidate to the oral defense. According to experience, this vote and decision takes about 1 week .
  • Only after all reports have been submitted and the subsequent positive decision on the acceptance of the dissertation and admission to the oral defense, the Doctoral Studies Office is authorized to send the invitation to the disputation. The invitation period should not be less than 2 weeks.

Doctoral candidates should allow a reasonable time for processing the application for the opening of the examination procedure as well as for all mentioned subsequent work steps.

Due to the above-mentioned deadlines, we strongly recommend planning at least 10 weeks between the submission of the dissertation and the date of oral defense.

If an earlier date for oral defense is planned, the doctoral candidate is responsible for arranging an earlier submission of the reports with the evaluators as well as asking the examination committee for a timely vote on the acceptance of the dissertation and admission to the oral defense.

The Doctoral Studies Office will not send any reminders to the evaluators before the 6 weeks have expired.

The binding registration of the oral defense by submitting the form "Registration for the Oral Defense" to the Doctoral Studies Office can only be made AFTER receipt of the dissertation grade. Registrations submitted before this date will be returned.

For further information on the registration for oral defense, please refer to the next section "Register for the oral defense".

Register for the oral defense

The date and place of the oral defense as well as the form in which it is conducted must be agreed by the doctoral candidate in agreement with the members of the examination committee. The oral defense should take place within 2 months of the last submitted evaluation.

Please submit the following signed form by e-mail AFTER you have received the dissertation grade and no later than 2.5 weeks before the oral defense takes place:

  • Form "Registration for the Oral Defense" (PDF)

Registrations submitted before receipt of the dissertation grade will be returned by the Doctoral Studies Office.

The regulations for oral defenses in this instruction sheet must be observed.

For oral defenses in presence (i.e. partially-digital or in full presence), the protection and hygiene measures defined at the Universität Hamburg apply: these can be found in the instructions of the Executive University Board and in the FAQ of the Universität Hamburg .

If the doctoral candidate, in agreement with the examination committee, wants to change the mode of conduct of the already scheduled oral defense, it is mandatory to send a new signed form "Registration for the Oral Defense" (PDF) by email to the Doctoral Studies Office Physics.

→ please confirm this with your own signature on the docket.

  • If you want to make changes to the final, graded version of your dissertation:

→ please let the docket sign by the person that was named for it by the examination commission at the oral defense. He/She must approve the dissertation in the modified version for publication.

If you carry out your doctorate under the MIN Doctoral Degree Regulations (2018), please note that you are only allowed to make substantive changes to the final, graded version of your dissertation.

Once the dissertation has been authorized for publication, you can initiate publication procedures.

2. Publication at the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg (= Stabi)

  • the faculty doctoral committee recommends publication as e-dissertation (contact: https://www.sub.uni-hamburg.de/service/publizieren/dissertationen/e-dissertationen-der-uhh.html )
  • Stabi send automatically a confirmation about effected publication to doctoral studies office and doctoral student by email (usually 2-3 days after successful publication)

3. Submission of printed copy to the departmental library

  • Irrespective of publication at the Stabi, 1 printed copy must always be submitted to the departmental library.
  • Please complete the following form online before submitting your thesis to department library: Dissmasterformular
  • After the docket has been signed by staff of departmental library, please send the fully signed docket to us by email.

4. Submission of complete docket to the Doctoral Studies Office

  • NEW : Since December 2021, no copy of thesis intended for publication must be submitted to the Doctoral Studies Office any more.
  • After submitting the completed docket to doctoral studies office and after receipt of the confirmation by Stabi, the Doctoral Studies Office is entitled to hand over the doctoral degree certificate.
  • The doctoral degree certificate will usually be handed over within three months as of receipt of notification about the fulfillment of publication requirements (= submission of complete docket). The doctoral student will be informed automatically as soon as the certificate is ready for collection.

After the agreement ends, the doctoral candidate can look for a new supervisor. The PHYSICS Subject Doctoral Committee helps doctoral candidates with their search.

Exmatrikulation

Information on exmatriculation can be found on the Campus Center website .

However, there may be overlaps or delays in exmatriculation, as completed doctorates are not regularly transmitted to the Campus Center. If, after your successful oral defense, you receive a request to re-enroll for the upcoming semester, you can consider this request as irrelevant. Then you will also be exmatriculated to the end of the semester in which you complete your doctorate (i.e. 31.03. or 30.09).

Good scientific practice

Follow the guidelines for good scientific practice published by the conference of physics departments (Konferenz der Fachbereiche Physik, KFP) and outlined in the Universität Hamburg bylaws and the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG) when writing your dissertation.

Honorary doctorates

Upon the suggestion of several professors in the department, the extended departmental board can request that the Subject Doctoral Committee initiate procedures to award an honorary doctorate.

The Subject Doctoral Committee receives three assessments and appoints an honorary doctorate commission pursuant to Section 8 to review the conditions for awarding an honorary doctorate. Two of these assessments should be prepared by external assessors.

The honorary doctorate commission forwards a draft resolution to the faculty council. The awarding of an honorary doctorate requires a three-fourths majority of faculty council members with voting rights. Conferral takes place when a certificate listing the recipient’s accomplishments is handed over.

Dissertations normally comprise a single piece of writing detailing the research work and findings. However, it is also possible to complete a cumulative dissertation. This is a body of work consisting of several individual pieces of published and/or unpublished work that is equivalent in its entirety to the above-mentioned dissertation. A cumulative dissertation comprises a list of the individual pieces of work, an introduction, and an overarching text interpreting, evaluating, and discussing the relationship between the individual pieces in the cumulative dissertation.

Fast-track route

Students awarded a top grade for their bachelor’s degree in a subject relevant to their doctoral studies may pursue a fast-track route if an assessment by two full-time university teachers is successful. The doctoral committee will decide on the form of assessment. Requirements for Admission to Doctoral Studies with a Foreign Degree

You can determine for yourself if you meet the official requirements for doctoral studies in our faculty. Please refer to the currently valid doctoral degree regulations, which include the necessary framework conditions. One of the key requirements for doctoral studies is that a university teacher declares his or her willingness to supervise your work. In order to obtain a commitment of supervision, you should first review the points below.

University teachers considering acting as supervisors can also use this list to determine if the requirements for admission to doctoral studies as stipulated in the doctoral degree regulations have been met:

  • Degree certificate from a university: The first requirement is a degree from a foreign university in a subject relevant to the planned doctoral project, i.e., a degree program which has prepared the student for the doctoral project (e.g., an MA in education). This degree must be equivalent to a research-oriented master’s, Magister , or Diplom To determine which degrees are equivalent, please visit the website of the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen, ZAB) of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz, KMK) http://anabin.kmk.org . Information is available under pages entitled “Institutionen” and “Bildungswesen.”
  • Converted final grade: When you apply, the final grade you earned abroad will be converted to a grade that would correspond to your final grade in Germany. This conversion is usually performed with the help of the Bayerische Formel ( Bavarian formula ). For more information on converting foreign grades, please visit the webpage of Anabin and click on “Bildungswesen.” There you can enter the country in which the degree was earned. You will then see the grade scale for the universities in that country indicating the lowest passing grade and the best grade possible. Both of these grades, together with the grade earned, are entered into the Bayerische Formel in order to obtain the equivalent German grade. Don’t worry, it is easier than it sounds!
  • Comparable scope of degree program: Admission to doctoral studies requires proof of a previous degree program (bachelor’s and master’s degrees, if applicable) covering 300 ECTS credits.
  • Language skills: If the doctoral dissertation is to be written up in German, the student must pass the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (German-language proficiency exam required for admission to German universities, DSH). However, if you want to write up your dissertation in English, you must provide proof of English language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (EFR) or comparable English language skills.

Doctoral Studies

Studying for a doctorate will involve you undertaking much more detailed research into a specific area you studied as part of your undergraduate course. At the end of the doctorate, you are expected to have made an independent, academic research contribution towards the study of law. A doctorate in law generally lasts three years. During this time, doctoral candidates work systematically and independently on a research topic which is then examined as a doctoral thesis (written dissertation) and a viva voce (presentation and discussion).

The Faculty of Law offers both individual and structured doctoral programmes. Graduates of either programme obtain the title of Dr. iur. (doctor iuris), but the study programmes vary somewhat in their parameters.

Please note that as of July 24, 2023, applications for admission to doctoral studies can only be submitted via the online tool Docata for doctoral studies at the University of Hamburg.

This also means for the further course of your doctoral procedure that you will have with Docata:

  • secure online access to all information and documents for your doctoral procedure in the future.
  • the ability to submit changed contact details and new information about your doctorate online.
  • the ability to upload documents directly to Docata.
  • the ability to receive important information about your doctoral procedure in Docata.
  • the ability to submit the application for the opening of the doctoral procedure online.

  https://docata.uni-hamburg.de

  • For further information on the admission as well as the entire doctoral procedure in Docata please visit Individual doctorate : Law : Universität Hamburg (uni-hamburg.de)  and https://www.faq-docata.uni-hamburg.de/allgemein.html .

The Faculty also offers a series of other Master’s degree and graduate programmes (partly in conjunction with other institutes) for graduates with the German first state examination in law (or a similar course of studies at a university abroad).

Quick links, new uw-stevens point graduate certificate studies the science of cannabis.

A new online certificate program offers students a foundation in the science of cannabis.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has long been on the forefront of cutting-edge programs that provide students with the needs of an ever-changing job market.

With the launch of the online Cannabis Science graduate certificate program , UW-Stevens Point is the first institution within the Universities of Wisconsin to offer the opportunity to become a leader in this fast-paced industry through courses designed and taught by UWSP professors who grow and study cannabis.

This graduate certificate is 100 percent online and provides participants with fundamental knowledge in the science of cannabis. From the history of cannabis cultivation, horticultural techniques and the plant’s complex phytochemistry, students will gain the foundation and expertise to secure positions in a large number of related industries.

Anyone in the world can take part in the program, with undergraduate students at UWSP also having the opportunity to complete the graduate certificate concurrently with their undergraduate work.

Applications are now open for this fall. Students may enter the program in the fall or spring, with the ability to study part- or full-time and take advantage of the flexibility of mostly asynchronous courses.

Cannabis is a versatile and emerging crop with many industrial and medical applications owing to its diversity of chemical compounds and its strong natural fibers.

The legal cannabis industry is a $25 billion dollar market and projected to grow to $45 billion by 2025. For five years in a row, employment in the industry increased by greater than 27 percent with more than 280 new jobs created every day in 2022, according to Leafly Jobs Report.

“We want to help fill a need in this growing industry not only in Wisconsin, but in surrounding states as well,” said Associate Professor and Department of Biology Chair Brian Barringer. “As a scientist and educator, it’s not hard to notice the number of students who want to be involved and in studying cannabis; this is what spurred our interest in creating this certificate program.”

The program was designed by expert faculty in the UWSP Departments of Biology and Chemistry who are immersed in cannabis-based research.

“One of the most distinguishing things about our program is that we have multiple faculty members at UWSP whose research programs focus on cannabis, and we collectively represent a wide variety of disciplines within the STEM field,” said Barringer.

Program faculty, including Barringer and associate professors Ann Impullitti and Shannon Riha, are part of a larger research collaboration that was recently awarded a $175,000 grant to study the effects of cannabis in removing synthetic, toxic materials from soils.

Course topics include an introduction to cannabis science, the biology, ecology and horticulture of cannabis and cannabis phytochemistry.

Students must have completed both a college-level introduction to biology and introduction to chemistry course to be qualified for the program. Faculty of the program emphasize that the certificate is open to students of all majors and degrees who have an interest in the industry.

The program is the second addition to come out of UW-Stevens Point’s Growth Initiative, an aspect of the university’s strategic plan that has faculty working to create programming that meets the needs of today’s professionals and the global economy.

To learn more or apply for the Cannabis Science graduate certificate, go to www.uwsp.edu/programs/certificate/cannabis-science , attend one of the many upcoming information sessions or contact either Nick Schultz, graduate recruitment coordinator, at [email protected] or Brian Barringer at [email protected] .

Mfon Okpok: Pioneering Interdisciplinary Engineering at Kennesaw State University

KENNESAW, Ga. | Apr 23, 2024

By Tracy Gaudlip

mfon okpok

Mfon Okpok’s journey through academia has been nothing short of extraordinary, culminating in his achievement as the inaugural graduate of Kennesaw State University’s pioneering Ph.D. program in interdisciplinary engineering. From the outset, Mfon’s passion for pushing the boundaries of traditional disciplines and seeking innovative solutions to complex problems set him apart as a visionary scholar. As he steps onto the stage to receive his doctoral hood this May, Mfon embodies the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration and academic excellence that defines this groundbreaking program, poised to make significant contributions to the ever-evolving fields of engineering and technology.

Before embarking on his Ph.D. journey, Mfon already traversed a diverse academic and professional landscape. He explains, “I completed my B.Sc. from Rivers State Polytechnic in Nigeria and pursued postgraduate studies at Drexel University and Southern Polytechnic State University.” Armed with master’s degrees in mathematics, electrical technology, information technology, and software engineering, his multidimensional background laid a solid foundation for his groundbreaking venture into the realm of interdisciplinary engineering.

His decision to pursue his doctoral studies at Kennesaw State University was a strategic one influenced by innovative research opportunities, robust interdisciplinary programs, and the university’s renowned faculty. Mfon admits he faced challenges balancing coursework, research, and personal commitments, but with effective time management, unwavering perseverance, and a mentorship-seeking approach, he navigated these obstacles successfully.

Mfon’s motivation to succeed stems from a deep-seated desire to integrate his varied academic expertise and tackle complex engineering challenges from multiple angles. “I was driven by a passion for innovation and a commitment to advancing technology for societal benefit, particularly to combat child abduction around the world—especially that of girls.” The focal point of his dissertation research concentrated on state-of-the-art improvements to public emergency notifications. “I focused on developing novel approaches for compressing static images of criminals or missing children based on the number of vehicles in proximity to the roadside unit without affecting other key vehicular safety messages and aimed to disseminate these images in public emergency notifications using emerging vehicular ad-hoc networks, with image resolution adjusted according to the number of vehicles.” This research not only demonstrates Mfon’s technical prowess but creates significant implications for enhancing emergency communication and public safety on roadways, particularly in combating crimes like child abduction.

Dr. Billy Kihei, one of Mfon’s dissertation advisors, identified several qualities and strengths in Mfon that contributed to his success in the Ph.D. program. “Mfon is a lifelong learner. He entered the program having already completed several MS degrees, taught college-level courses, and had prior work experience in broadcast technologies; all of which he adapted well to a topic relevant to my research lab thrusts.” He added, “When Mfon brought his thesis idea to my office, I immediately knew he had something that was new and relevant to the practice.”

Mfon’s research outcomes have made an impact and garnered significant interest both locally and internationally. “He is already gaining a lot of interest in his birth country of Nigeria to start pushing interdisciplinary engineering as a legitimate field of study,” Dr. Kihei enthusiastically shared. “The diversity of his committee members—from Kennesaw State, the University of Georgia, and Argonne National Laboratory—helps other programs reflect on the interdisciplinary nature of his work and showcases the relevance of interdisciplinary engineering as a burgeoning field of study.”

Mfon agrees and explained how choosing advisors from diverse areas of expertise exposed him to different perspectives and methodologies. “It instilled in me a holistic approach to problem-solving and a commitment to innovation and collaboration. Their mentorship helped refine my academic skills and navigate various challenges effectively. Furthermore, it has enabled me to transcend disciplinary bias and effectively engage with other disciplines to incorporate their perspectives into problem-solving processes.”

Looking ahead, Mfon’s future career goals encompass innovative research and leadership roles in academia or industry. By leveraging his Ph.D. experience, he aims to apply interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to address pressing engineering challenges and contribute meaningfully to societal advancement. Mfon’s journey as the first graduate of KSU’s Interdisciplinary Engineering program serves as a beacon of inspiration for future students, faculty, and staff. His message of seizing opportunities, embracing challenges, and striving for excellence resonates deeply within the academic community, reinforcing the program’s commitment to fostering visionary scholars who pioneer transformative solutions in engineering and technology.

Master's programs

Universität Hamburg offers two kinds of master's programs:

  • Consecutive master's programs build upon specific bachelor's programs. As a rule, they are two to four-semester programs which build upon, deepen or expand previous bachelor's programs by adding an interdisciplinary focus.
  • Non-consecutive master's programs do not build upon specific bachelor's programs. They have the same prerequisites, however, as consecutive master's programs and they confer the same qualifications.

Applying online / application documents

You can apply to Universität Hamburg online throughout the application period. The following page and/or PDF brochures contain information about application procedures.

Dates and deadlines

In addition to semester dates, the following page and sub-pages contain various application dates and deadlines.

K-State students receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship awards

Tuesday, April 23, 2024

MANHATTAN — Eight current and former K-State students were selected or named honorable mention for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program , a five-year fellowship that includes an annual stipend of $37,000. The current students selected for the program are Kalea Nippert, senior in ecology and evolutionary biology, St. George ; Kale Stahl, senior in applied mathematics and physics, Topeka ; Carson Connard , senior in mathematics, The Woodlands, Texas ; and Shannon Ruble, doctoral student in psychology, Parkersburg, West Virginia . The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, or NSF GRFP, recognizes graduate students pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics, engineering, technology or science. Its purpose is to maintain quality, vitality and diversity in the nation's scientific and engineering workforce. "These exceptional students have been honored with this prestigious fellowship, showcasing not only their academic ability but also their commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge," said David Rosowsky, vice president for research. "We are proud of their achievements and anticipate the groundbreaking discoveries and innovations they will lead in the future." Nippert, who will graduate in May, has been completing an undergraduate research project under Zak Ratajczak, assistant professor of biology, since 2022. Her research is focused on understanding extreme fire effects within woody plant communities and if extreme fire could be used as a management strategy to control woody encroachment occurring throughout global grassland and savanna ecosystems. "The NSF GRFP will allow me to be fully funded — my tuition will be paid for the duration of my Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina Greensboro," Nippert said. "This will help me reach my goals of getting a Ph.D. and becoming a research ecologist. I am very honored and excited to have the chance to receive the GRFP." Stahl is researching inverse scattering problems, with Dinh-Liem Nguyen, associate professor of mathematics. The purpose of their research is to develop a stable "imaging functional" for periodic objects. "The GRF is a very prestigious award, and receiving it will allow me to focus on research and passing my qualifying exams in my first years of graduate school," Stahl said. "I will be attending Purdue University's mathematics Ph.D. program in the fall, and this fellowship will allow me to start research almost immediately. I'm very excited that I will be able to do more research earlier, as research is by far my favorite part of studying mathematics." Connard, who will graduate Summa Cum Laude in May, is working with Lino Amorim, associate professor of mathematics, on a project focused on developing algebraic invariants for Lagrangian suborbifolds. "The GRFP will not only allow me to focus significantly more time and energy on research in graduate school, but it will also allow me to live more comfortably due to the generous size of the fellowship," Connard said. "I intend to pursue my Ph.D., and I aim to work in research — ideally in the academic realm — as a career. I am absolutely and completely honored to have received this prestigious distinction, and I have only just begun to reap its benefits." Connard will attend the University of Washington in the fall to pursue his Ph.D. Ruble is in her second year studying neural mechanisms of fear and avoidance behaviors in rats and how social interactions impact them. She is conducting her research with Maria Diehl, professor of psychological sciences. Ruble, who will complete her doctorate in the spring of 2027, said that after she earns her Ph.D., she plans to pursue a career in either academia or science communication. "The NSF GRFP provides me with an opportunity to conduct high-quality research and communicate the findings through publications and conference presentations," Ruble said. "I will also be able to mentor undergraduates involved in my GRFP-funded work and help them pursue careers in STEM as I would in a future career in academia." Abigail Schmidt, senior in environmental biology and natural resources and environmental science, Shawnee , was named honorable mention. Her research focuses on how climate extremes, like drought, will impact ecosystem structure and function. Ratajczak, assistant professor biology, is her research mentor. Schmidt will attend graduate school at Utah State University to study savanna ecosystems. Along with Nippert, Stahl, Connard, Ruble and Schmidt, three recent K-State graduates were also selected for the fellowship or named honorable mention: Reilly Jensen, a May 2021 bachelor's graduate in Spanish and biology, Buhler , who is at Wichita State University, fellowship recipient; Maxwell Harman, a May 2022 bachelor's graduate in biochemistry, Inman , who is now at Michigan State University, fellowship recipient; and Cole Wilson, May 2021 bachelor's graduate in biochemistry, Wichita , who is now at Northwestern University, honorable mention. Knight-Hennessy Scholars

Eligibility

Main navigation.

Dates and Deadlines

Knight-Hennessy Scholars has no restrictions based on age, college or university, field of study, or career aspiration. We encourage citizens and residents of all countries to apply. We do not require applicants to seek endorsements from colleges, universities, or other institutions. Additionally, there are no quotas by discipline or program.

There are two baseline eligibility requirements.

Requirement 1: Admission to Stanford

First, in addition to applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS), you must apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program including, but not limited to, DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD programs. You must meet at least one of the following four conditions:

  • You are applying separately but concurrently to KHS and a full-time Stanford graduate degree program such that you will start both in the same year.
  • You have already been offered and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, and will apply to KHS such that you will start both in the same year.
  • You are a current Stanford graduate student who will apply to add a second full-time Stanford graduate degree program, such that you will start both KHS and the new program in the same year.
  • You are a current Stanford PhD student in your first year of enrollment, and will apply to KHS such that you will start KHS in your second year of PhD enrollment.

Please note that the following Stanford graduate degree programs are not eligible for Knight-Hennessy Scholars:

  • Applicants to the Honors Cooperative Program
  • Applicants to the Master of Liberal Arts
  • Applicants to the Doctor of Science of Law (JSD )
  • Current Stanford students applying for coterminal graduate study
  • Current Stanford PhD students adding an MA or MS degree in their current discipline

Requirement 2: Undergraduate Degree Date

Second, you must have earned, in January 2018 or later, a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college or university of recognized standing.

For applicants who served in the military, we extend the eligibility window by two years in acknowledgement of longer service commitments; you must have earned your degree in January 2016 or later to enroll in 2025. Current college students are eligible if you will earn your first degree by September 2025. Within the eligibility window, we do not give preference based on recency of the degree.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: what if i graduated from an institution outside the u.s. what are the eligibility requirements for me.

A: To be eligible for graduate study at Stanford University, you must meet the requirements of the graduate program(s) that you wish to pursue and hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing. See Stanford's guidelines for minimum level of study for international applicants. (The Office of Graduate Admissions , not Knight-Hennessy Scholars, sets these policies.)

Q: If I graduated in 2017 or before, may I still become a Knight-Hennessy scholar?

A: If you graduated with your first/bachelor's degree more than seven years before your intended enrollment date (in 2017 or earlier, for the autumn 2025 intake), then you are not eligible for consideration as a Knight-Hennessy scholar. This applies even if you have earned an additional degree in 2018 or later. You may still apply to the Stanford graduate program of your choice, and there are many other options for funding your graduate education at Stanford.  (Those who served in their country's military have two additional years of eligibility.)

Q: I am an undocumented student. Am I eligible to apply?

A: If you have been granted DACA status, do not hold formal citizenship in any country, or are otherwise undocumented, you are eligible to apply for graduate study and matriculate at Stanford University and Knight-Hennessy Scholars. For more information, please see the  Undocumented at Stanford  website.

Q: I have a graduate degree already. Am I eligible?

A: If you have earned a graduate degree, you remain eligible to enroll as a Knight-Hennessy scholar in 2025 as long as you earned your first/bachelor's degree in 2018 or later.  (Those who served in their country's military after their undergraduate studies have two additional years of eligibility.)

Q: I am an enrolled Stanford graduate student. May I apply for Knight-Hennessy Scholars?

A:  If you are a Stanford PhD student who started your PhD in 2024, you may apply in 2024 such that you will start KHS in 2025 (your second year of PhD enrollment). Otherwise, if you enrolled in a graduate degree program at Stanford in 2024 or earlier, you are ineligible for consideration as a Knight-Hennessy scholar for your current degree program.

Q: I am a Stanford graduate student applying to a different program at the university. Am I eligible to apply this year?

A: You are welcome to apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars if you defer enrollment to 2025, or if you apply for a new graduate degree program at Stanford that starts in 2025.

Q: May I defer my Knight-Hennessy Scholars offer?

A: No. Deferral of enrollment to a graduate program is the purview of that department. Most Stanford programs do not offer deferrals though some - such as the professional schools of business, law, and medicine - allow deferrals. Regardless of the graduate program's policy, Knight-Hennessy Scholars does not defer scholar offers . If you are selected as a Knight-Hennessy scholar and are unable to enroll, you must reapply for admission for the year you intend to enroll.

Q: I was accepted this year to Stanford but want to defer my enrollment in the Stanford graduate program until next year. May I apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars for the following year?

A: If you defer enrollment to a Stanford graduate program, you may apply to start as a Knight-Hennessy scholar for the year that you enroll in that graduate program. For example, if you have been admitted to the Stanford MBA Program and deferred enrollment to September 2025, then you may apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars in 2024 to enroll as a scholar in 2025 — thus aligning your initial enrollment in the MBA Program and as a Knight-Hennessy scholar. If you have already received admission to one of Stanford's graduate programs and deferred enrollment to 2025 or later, you may apply to be a Knight-Hennessy scholar. Plan to apply for the year that you would enroll in your graduate program.

Q: I am a first-year Stanford PhD student who has received a fellowship administered by the Vice Provost for Graduate Education . May I apply for Knight-Hennessy Scholars?

A: Please refer to the chart below to confirm whether you are eligible to apply to KHS. Awards marked "No" may not be combined with KHS and may not be discontinued in order to apply to KHS.
