For those who lack graphic design experience, the word “template” has become something of a dirty word. It calls to mind cheap cookie-cutter designs stuffed with clip art. But there’s more than one type of template, and many of them are much more than just an easy shortcut; they’re absolutely vital to the print design process.

Any time you design presentation folders , you’re eventually going to need a template at some point—whether you’re forming your initial idea and layout, creating the design itself, or presenting a finished design mockup to your client.

presentation folder templates

Finding the right template for your project can be challenging. There are lots of them out there, and not all of them are free; you might end up paying for a template only to realize that it’s completely wrong for your pocket folder concept. Fortunately, Company Folders has invested a great deal of time into creating the following free downloads, with each template fashioned to make your design process as smooth and painless as possible.

Mockup Templates

Raw design files aren’t very helpful when you present your work to a client, especially for print projects that need to be folded into shape, such as two pocket folders . Parts of the folder will appear upside-down, which will confuse those who are less familiar with how dielines work. In situations like this, mockup templates are a lifesaver. They allow you to quickly convert your design files into fully realized mockups, so your design will look the way it will when it’s actually printed and folded.

These mockups can be further customized with a background of your choice, so your presentation folders can be set against a wooden table, a grassy field, or another surface or environment.

Front and Inside Folder Mockup Template

This versatile template shows off both the front cover and inside right panel of the folder.

Stacked Presentation Folders Mockup Template

Inside View Two Pocket Folder Mockup Template

This template is most useful when the most interesting elements of a folder design are on its interior, showcasing the pockets and inside panels.

Die Cut Templates

Even if you never make use of any other type of template when crafting a presentation folder design, you’re not going to get very far without a die cut template. Also known as “dieline” templates, these function as the canvas upon which you will construct your actual design. Without an appropriate die cut template, a printer will be unable to print your work.

In situations where you don’t actually need your design printed (such as when you don’t have a client and are just experimenting with creating folders), it’s still worth it to use a die cut template. That way, you’ll always have the option to print it later if the need arises. Plus, this will make it easier to apply your design to a mockup template and incorporate it into your portfolio.

4-Color Process Letter Size Two Pocket Folder

6×9 2 Pocket Small Presentation Folder

Serpentine Cut Right Pocket Presentation Folder

Design Templates

Folder design templates give you a pre-made design that you can mix and match with your own images and text. Since practically every element of the template can be replaced with something else, you don’t need to worry about your design looking identical to someone else’s; it’s just a convenient time-saving solution when you need help coming up with a general layout.

Templates are available in both Illustrator and Photoshop formats. Even if you

don’t turn one of these templates into a design of your own, browsing them might just give you the inspiration you need to create something completely original.

Rethinking Templates

Don’t think of templates as a lazy way to avoid doing work for your client. Instead, think of them as a way to save valuable time and reinvest it into expressing the creativity and craftsmanship that your client hired you for. Templates function best as a way to enhance the hard work you do, not skirt around it.

Creating a truly original design for a corporate presentation folder can be difficult. Presentation folders have become a staple in business’s print marketing collateral, so at times, it can feel as if everything you come up with has been done before.

While it’s not rocket science, there is a science to creating a unique design. A powerful design doesn’t need to be overpowering. Here are some tips for creating original presentation folders from the printing experts at Company Folders, Inc. to help you find the perfect balance and make your next design stand out.

  • Play with different shades of gray

modern presentation folder design

Sometimes, bright colors can be too much. The gray-scaled charcoal lines on the cover of Advisors Excel’s presentation folder give it a new level of texture. Black and various shades of gray combine to create a sleek, elegant design. Its sans serif font caps off the modern look.

  • Make their fingers tell the story

modern presentation folder design

One way to make your design memorable is to appeal to people’s sense of touch beyond holding the paper. People will form a connection to University Housing Solutions when they run their fingers over the embossed logo on the cover of this file tab folder. As their fingers continue to the tab, they’ll feel the smoothness of the shiny gold foil stamp against rough linen stock and feel compelled to look inside.

modern presentation folder design

Adding another dimension to a design adds a complex element to an otherwise simple design. Recipients will want to grab a handful of fresh pasta when they get this promotional brochure folder from Pasta Fresca . The clean, three-dimensional design looks like a die-cut of a large P that you can pull the yellow and green noodles through on the cover, making people hungry for some delicious pasta.

  • Keep it Simple

modern presentation folder design

A simple design can spark just as much inspiration as a complex one. Title Town Settlements features only its logo on the cover of this real estate folder, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t unique. A roof connects the Ts in the company name, putting everything a homebuyer needs under one roof, while the gold foil stamp represents luxury and wealth.

  • Use Multiple Imprint Methods

modern presentation folder design

This file folder design combines multiple imprint methods to create an innovative design for QDiscovery . A debossed cobblestone pattern stands out on the solid, gray background and provides a pretty cool texture to the folder. The company’s name still stands out at the bottom of the cover with a shiny foil stamped Q.

  • Less is More

modern presentation folder design

Though there is little color on the cover of this folder design, it’s far from plain. Recipients get a peek at the campus of Stanford Graduate School of Business as one of the school’s prominent buildings is embossed on the cover.

  • Repeat Yourself

modern presentation folder design

A great way to impress a brand on people is to use the power of repetition. There is no way recipients will forget Harvest Land Co-Op , as the sales folder design features the company logo printed all over the cover in various sizes. Its neutral color pallet adds some subtly to the design and allows the recipient to focus on the brand by not competing with the logo.

  • Shine Bright

modern presentation folder design

Many custom folders use foil stamps to add elegance to a design and make a specific element stand out. A fancy gold foil stamp adds a luxurious luster to this professional design for Boehmer Insurance & Investment Group, Inc. The black, linen stock adds another level of sophistication to the corporate folder and makes the company’s name pop even more on the cover.

  • Subtle Elements Stand Out

modern presentation folder design

Sometimes, it’s the smallest element that can make a design special. In this case, it’s the clear coating on the cover in the shape of the company’s logo. It draws attention to Callahan & Associates by circling the business name at the center of the cover. The bold red background lets people know the contents are important and makes them take notice.

  • Let the Images Tell the Story

modern presentation folder design

The best way to appeal to someone’s emotions is through images. All Care puts its photography skills to use with its creative design. Images of happy, comfortable elderly people are featured to make people secure in their choice of facility for their loved ones. No one image is more important than the others because the layout shows they are more powerful together.

modern presentation folder design

Using a bold color can have a similar impact as a foil stamp as it helps attract attention to a specific element or product. A bright yellow logo for Big Systems catches the eye as it stands out against a sold black background. Each word’s importance is highlighted with a different weight on the modern, sans serif font. An orange ombre stripe on the back draws attention to the company’s contact information.

  • Highlight the Product

modern presentation folder design

Making the vehicles the primary focus in this folder brochure design helps build the excitement customers feel when they receive it, as it’s likely one of the last things they receive before they drive their new car home. The beautiful scenery behind the vehicles illustrates the peaceful, serene feeling drivers will have on the road. A blue background represents the security people feel with the Don Valley Volkswagen brand.

  • Use Complementary Colors

modern presentation folder design

It’s important to be mindful of the colors used in the design and what they represent. These colors work great to illustrate the October Mountain brand in more way than one. A shiny gold foil stamp stands out against the dark green linen stock, similar to how new gold coins would shine against money. Fitting because the business is home to financial advisors. In addition, the forest green background represents the mountains of the great outdoors to remind clients of the business name.

  • Everything Doesn’t Have to be Centered

modern presentation folder design

While many specialty designs will print logos or prominent images in the center of the cover, it’s okay to play off the sides, too. McMahon Automotive Group is a great example of that. The sleek new car is speeding off the side of the folder, which lures clients to look inside at its documents. The logo features three strips that mimic a smooth highway and highlight how smooth the process of getting a new car will be for clients.

  • Go Beyond the Cover

modern presentation folder design

It is important to have a compelling design on your cover, but that doesn’t mean it has to end there. This Netflix tri-fold brochure uses elements of “The Flash” throughout the brochure, while staying true to the brand’s identity. It doesn’t overdo it with a lot of flashy movie images, instead keeping it simple with one large image of “The Flash” at the bottom and his classic lightning bolt logo at the top. More images from the movie are inside to highlight various ways viewers can watch.

17 Ways to Customize a Presentation Folder Design

modern presentation folder design

Vladimir Gendelman has been designing inspirational presentation folders for business clients for nearly a decade and offers a plethora of unique cuts at his online folder emporium, CompanyFolders . He is a master of clever printing techniques and this is a guest blog post on the many ways to customize a presentation folder design.

Enter Vladimir

There’s a common misconception that designing for digital media is no different from designing for print media, and that knowing how to design graphics for a website is basically the same as creating a presentation folder. While it’s true that the basic tenets of design are universal no matter the medium, there are still special considerations you need to take into account when designing for print – mainly due to the fact that you are creating a physical object.

That means not only do your presentation folder designs have to look good, they have to create a sensory experience when they’re physically touched. Folder designs also need to be functional so that people can properly interact with it. Since there are many things you can accomplish with print that you can’t accomplish on a computer screen, there are more possibilities available to you when customizing a presentation folder.

1. Custom die-cut pockets and panels

Custom die-cuts let you alter the entire shape of the folder, essentially changing the canvas to your liking, so to speak. Not only are unique die-cut designs fun to look at and interact with, they let you fully customize the folder design to match the contents inside or establish a brand identity.

The texture of printed materials is very important and custom die cutting gives you the tools to manipulate the way your folder feels. In a pile of papers and other printed materials, you can always find the one that has a custom die-cut design using touch alone.

There are a variety of interesting design ideas to apply to your custom die cuts. For example, the folder panels and pockets can be shaped to highlight a strong design element, such as a logo. If you’re looking for something a little more playful, use die cuts shapes that have relevance to your brand identity, such as a car-shaped pocket for an auto dealer.

2. Media slits

Die cut media slits give you the ability to easily display and store business cards, brochures, CDs and other items directly on top of the pocket, instead of inside the pocket itself. This not only ensures that these media items will be out in the open for people to see, but that they won’t be lost in the shuffle.

Many printers include shaped media slits as a standard feature on their folder templates. However, these are usually just your standard tab or corner-style slits. With custom die-cuts, your business card slits can be cut into any reasonable size or shape. Find more information on slits here .

3. Die-cut windows

Since folders open like a book, we naturally think of the front panel as the “cover” while the inside panels are the “content.” A die-cut window can allow you to display this content directly from the cover by offering a sneak peek of what’s inside. This tantalizes people and makes them eager to flip open the folder to see what lies within.

Die cut windows can be any shape, allowing you to conform to the shape of the design element you want to highlight. Alternatively, you can let the window itself be the design – cutting a design into the front and having a color or pattern behind it.

4. Stock thickness

Stock thickness or weight can affect the way your audience perceives your design, even if it’s not directly part of the design itself. You know how cheap items can feel flimsy and poorly made? It’s the same thing for stock thickness. Thicker, heavier stock has a higher quality feel, reflecting well on both your design and the brand it represents, but thinner stock has the opposite effect.

5. Stock texture

Stocks come in a variety of texture – even some that mimic other materials, such as vellum and linen. These textures make your folder have a unique feel, but they can alter the look of your printed designs, so using them can limit your options.

On the other hand, uniquely textured stock leaves a lasting impression on your audience because it feels new and unfamiliar, which creates a stronger sense memory. Textured stock is also a good option for embossing, which adds even more touch sensation to your design. There’s more than a few great stock options available for presentation folders, here are some examples .

6. Stock color

Stocks come in a variety of colors, but the color of your stock can alter the appearance of your printed elements. Some designers embrace this quality and use colored stock to play with different color combinations, creating new effects when the ink is applied to the colored stock. It’s also possible to print on colored stock by using a layer of white ink first; but there will still be some loss of color quality.

Designers usually print a colored background instead of relying on colored stock, but colored stock has an advantage in the fact that the color goes all the way through the paper. If you use white stock to print a colored background, that white stock will be visible along the edge of every cut.

7. Embossing

The embossing process creates a textured impression on the stock that is raised off the page, just like the seal on an official document. Embossed elements are as irresistible as bubble wrap – they practically beg to be touched. Think of embossing as bait you can use to ensure that the audience makes a tactile connection to your design.

Embossing is the most compatible design option because it can be combined with nearly any other imprint method to create distinctive raised design elements. You can make printed pictures pop off the page or create the illusion of real metal by combining it with foil stamping. Blind embossing is when you use embossing alone to create your design, which gives your folder an elegant, sophisticated look.

8. Debossing

Debossing is like the identical twin cousin of embossing – it’s the same process, but in reverse. Instead of the imprint popping out at you, it’s depressed directly into the page. This creates a similar effect to embossing, but debossing has a unique quality that sort of pulls the audience into the design itself. For maximum variety in texture, use a combination of both techniques.

9. Metallic foil stamping

Metallic foil is a reflective material that mimics the appearance of metal. Metallic foil stamping is often paired with dark stock or colored stock to make the foil really stand out. This technique used by itself can be subtle and elegent, or you can go for big bold designs by pairing it with other imprint methods.

Since the foil is a different material than the stock, it adds a smooth texture to your folder. When combined with embossing, the two effects create a realistic metallic look that also feels somewhat like metal that’s been affixed to the page.

10. Non-metallic foil stamping

Non-metallic foil stamping uses the same process and provides a lot of the same benefits as metallic foil, such as a compatibility with colored stocks and embossed designs. There are several different types of non-metallic foils, such as colored foils that resemble vinyl or special effect foils that have holographic or three-dimensional properties.

11. Metallic ink

Metallic ink represents the middle ground between printing in ink and using metallic foil. The shiny effect comes from actual metal shavings mixed into the ink. This creates a subtle effect that is less flashy and a bit more diverse than metallic foil.

Metallic ink still acts primarily like normal ink, so you’re able to create more detailed imagery than what’s available to you with foil stamping. It’s also better for small details, since it doesn’t require adhesion like foil. This technique is capable of producing a greater variety of tones since it can be applied in multiple layers.

12. Textured coatings

Coating not only adds protection to your folder, it can add texture to your design. Aqueous coating comes in a wide variety of styles and will protect against weathering, bleaching and general wear and tear.

Laminate and matte coatings are both smooth, but laminate also has a shiny effect while matte is static. Soft-touch coating creates a feeling that is reminiscent of velvet, which guarantees a tactile connection with your media. Vinyl coating has a texture like satin, which is silky and pleasing to the touch.

13. UV coatings

UV coating helps make your colored print designs look brighter and pop off the page, especially designs that use color photography. In fact, it’s best to think of UV coating like the coating of a glossy photograph – it offers some minimal protection for the folder, but is only available in a smooth texture. Therefore, UV coating is more about making your design look its best instead of getting the audience to interact with the folder.

14. Spot coating

Different coatings can be applied to the same design, allowing you to create textural variety in your folder. You could choose to make your logo or other important design element in a highly-textural coating while making the rest of your folder smooth. The audience’s fingers will gravitate towards the different texture, creating a stronger connection to that element.

15. Spot printing

There are two standard ink printing options for folders, 4-color process and PMS ink. 4-color process is similar to what your computer printer uses – it creates colors from cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) tones. Meanwhile, PMS inks are pre-mixed, which ensures that the colors are always accurate.

4-color process is usually the standard for designs that use more than two or three colors. However, much like spot coating, you can also spot print with PMS ink, letting you have a larger variety of colors to work with than what’s normally available with just 4-color process. This lets you correct color inaccuracies, use precise branding colors or add metallic ink effects to any 4-color design. Check out these tips for designing for 4CP.

16. Spine attachments

Custom spine attachments let you utilize your folder like the cover to a book. These can be used to bind your materials into the folder itself instead of using pockets. You can also opt to use the spine to attach additional materials such as a stitched brochure. Attachments not only make your information more easily accessible, they put it front and center and make it the star of the folder’s interior.

17. Folder accessories

A presentation folder is a great tool for making an impact, but it can only do so much on its own. You require additional folder accessories to create a full presentation packet and it’s best to design all of these contents at once to establish a consistent brand image. Likewise, having one printer who can create all of your materials at once lets you save time and money. At CompanyFolders, we carry six accessories to choose from.

The most popular accessory is folder inserts, which help you create an attractive package by displaying your leading points on stacked, cascading information pages. These not only look nice, they make it easier for recipients to find what they’re looking for.

If you plan mailing your folder, pair it with a portfolio sleeve. These are specially designed for folders and can be created using many of the same special print options available for folders, allowing you to maintain a consistent design scheme.

Your best bet for an alluring presentation folder is to have a strong relationship with your printer. They can tell you what type of special options are available and how to best use them to make your folder design truly unique.

16 Amazing Presentation Folder Ideas

When you think about it, a presentation folder really is like the wrapping on a gift. Great wrapping paper tells the recipient how much you care by demonstrating the time you spent wrapping it. This builds anticipation for what’s inside. And that’s what a great presentation folder can do for you. Even more than the gift itself, it’s the time that you’ve spent putting everything together that matters.

Your presentation folders should follow this logic. Unlike a wrapping paper that is vague about its contents, a good folder hints at what is inside.

Below are some inspiring examples that can help you to follow this thought process and hopefully move you to improve your materials. For more ideas, you can browse these presentation folders from CompanyFolders.com.

The best part about this piece is its perfectly executed design. It’s simple, the look and feel is consistent across it’s contents and there are no distracting elements to take your focus away from the brand.

A tri-fold design provides a greater surface area to work with. This gives you an opportunity to further push your own unique brand message.

By using a finishing technique similar to a UV gloss, the spot varnish on this folder creates a fantastic looking design element, without the use of color.

Using a creative cover clasp is another effective way to set your piece apart. In this case the clasp is die cut from the inside pocket.

modern presentation folder design

A pattern helps to fill space on your presentation folders without having to rely on an image or some other specific piece of art. If it can be tied to your logo or another of your brand elements, as it is in this case, all the better.

Here’s a great example of using a custom die cut as a way to reinforce other established design elements. In this case it evokes the look and color of the logo by allowing the page behind it to show through.

This is a great reminder about not forgetting to include the back cover when designing your presentation folder. It’s an easy way to expand your content and doesn’t cost anything extra.

A simple, straightforward design will always function the best. Everything is laid out exactly where the audience needs to find it, and your information can be presented in a clear and succinct fashion.

The goal with your presentation folder is to be able to use it with as many of your marketing materials as possible. While it may seem that there is a lot going on, in terms of images and graphics, it still is versatile enough where it can be used regardless of the contents of the folder.

Clean and concise layouts lead to great results. The example illustrates that point perfectly. The use of color on the inside of the folder is inviting and provides good relief to the cover as well as the pocket.

I’m shopping for presentation folders and wanted to see how much each folder costs? I’d be placing a small order to start, say 25 to 50 folders. Can I get sample pricing (I won’t hold you to it, just a ballpark idea?)

Folder Ideas: Unleashing Creativity and Style With Presentation Folders

Two people holding folders in an office setting

Last updated on November 14th, 2023 at 04:47 pm

What are Folder Ideas?

Before we delve into specific designs, it’s worth taking a moment to understand what we mean by “folder ideas.” These creative concepts or design choices transform regular folders into unique pocket folders, stylish portfolios, or an eye-catching presentation folder that stands out in a pile of documents.

Folder ideas are more than aesthetic choices. They’re deliberate design decisions that enhance organization, improve communication, and boost brand visibility. The right folder design can even evoke emotions, setting the tone for the information held within.

Get 20% off your first order at Printivity banner ad

Imagine a folder that not only serves the practical purpose of containing documents but also serves as a reflection of your brand identity and tangibly communicates your message. That’s the power of a well-executed folder idea.

Unveiling Unique Folder Designs

Developing a unique folder design is about more than selecting a color scheme or inserting a logo. It’s about creating a tangible representation of your brand that people can physically hold, feel, and appreciate.

Stylish Portfolio Folder Designs for Professionals

A portfolio folder isn’t merely a container for your work—it’s a presentation tool that can say as much about you as the projects it holds. Professionals, from architects to photographers, graphic designers to artists, can significantly benefit from a unique portfolio folder design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

These folders can include a variety of elements, such as pockets, business card slots, or even CD holders, arranged in a way that reflects your brand identity. But it doesn’t end with the layout. The use of textures, finishes, and unique die cuts can add a tactile dimension to your design, providing an engaging, multi-sensory experience. In essence, your portfolio folder should not just carry your work, but it should be a part of your work, an impressive introduction to your professional story.

Functional Elements of Folder Design

Consider the purpose of your folder. Are you designing an information pack, a proposal presentation, or a portfolio? The design of your folder should align with its content and intended audience.

If you’re creating a cool pocket folder for an entertainment event, consider a trendy and vibrant design. For a corporate presentation, a more sophisticated and formal folder design may be appropriate. Keep your audience and purpose in mind as you choose colors, patterns, and additional elements like pockets and business card holders.

Cool Folder Designs for Presentations

Designing folders for presentations requires a strategic approach. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about communication. The design of your folder can significantly influence how your materials are perceived and received. The following are common folder styles for presentations:

Pocket Folder

When it comes to the design of a pocket folder, simplicity is key. A minimalist approach, coupled with strategic use of color and patterns, can result in an engaging and organized appearance. By carefully considering the placement and functionality of pockets, the folder not only becomes visually appealing but also enhances usability by facilitating the sorting and categorization of information.

Tri-Fold Presentation Folder

With their larger surface area compared to standard folders, tri-fold presentation folders provide ample room for stunning and intricate designs. Skillfully arranged graphics have the power to effortlessly guide the viewer’s eye, creating a captivating narrative that perfectly complements the enclosed information. Paying close attention to detail ensures a memorable and engaging experience for anyone who interacts with the folder.

Gate Fold Folder

A gate fold folder, with its dramatic opening like a set of intricately crafted doors, can create a thrilling sense of anticipation and delightful surprise. This folder style presents a unique and captivating opportunity to enhance the overall user experience through meticulous design, engaging color schemes, and carefully selected imagery or graphics that perfectly complement the enclosed content.

Landscape Folder

A landscape folder, with its broader canvas, provides ample space for creative design. This format is ideal for showcasing breathtaking panoramic images, intricate large-scale graphics, or accommodating extensive textual content. What sets it apart is the unique user experience it offers, as the horizontal orientation, although less common than the standard portrait, provides a refreshing and captivating viewing perspective.

F.A.A. Audit of Boeing’s 737 Max Production Found Dozens of Issues

The company failed 33 of 89 audits during an examination conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration after a panel blew off an Alaska Airlines jet in January.

By Mark Walker

Reporting from Washington

A six-week audit by the Federal Aviation Administration of Boeing’s production of the 737 Max jet found dozens of problems throughout the manufacturing process at the plane maker and one of its key suppliers, according to a slide presentation reviewed by The New York Times.

The air-safety regulator initiated the examination after a door panel blew off a 737 Max 9 during an Alaska Airlines flight in early January. Last week, the agency announced that the audit had found “multiple instances” in which Boeing and the supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, failed to comply with quality-control requirements, though it did not provide specifics about the findings.

The presentation reviewed by The Times, though highly technical, offers a more detailed picture of what the audit turned up. Since the Alaska Airlines episode, Boeing has come under intense scrutiny over its quality-control practices, and the findings add to the body of evidence about manufacturing lapses at the company.

For the portion of the examination focused on Boeing, the F.A.A. conducted 89 product audits, a type of review that looks at aspects of the production process. The plane maker passed 56 of the audits and failed 33 of them, with a total of 97 instances of alleged noncompliance, according to the presentation.

The F.A.A. also conducted 13 product audits for the part of the inquiry that focused on Spirit AeroSystems, which makes the fuselage, or body, of the 737 Max. Six of those audits resulted in passing grades, and seven resulted in failing ones, the presentation said.

At one point during the examination, the air-safety agency observed mechanics at Spirit using a hotel key card to check a door seal, according to a document that describes some of the findings. That action was “not identified/documented/called-out in the production order,” the document said.

In another instance, the F.A.A. saw Spirit mechanics apply liquid Dawn soap to a door seal “as lubricant in the fit-up process,” according to the document. The door seal was then cleaned with a wet cheesecloth, the document said, noting that instructions were “vague and unclear on what specifications/actions are to be followed or recorded by the mechanic.”

Asked about the appropriateness of using a hotel key card or Dawn soap in those situations, a spokesman for Spirit, Joe Buccino, said the company was “reviewing all identified nonconformities for corrective action.”

Jessica Kowal, a spokeswoman for Boeing, said the plane maker was continuing “to implement immediate changes and develop a comprehensive action plan to strengthen safety and quality, and build the confidence of our customers and their passengers.”

In late February, the F.A.A. gave the company 90 days to develop a plan for quality-control improvements. In response, its chief executive, Dave Calhoun, said that “we have a clear picture of what needs to be done,” citing in part the audit findings.

Boeing said this month that it was in talks to acquire Spirit , which it spun out in 2005. Mr. Buccino said on Monday that Spirit had received preliminary audit findings from the F.A.A. and planned to work with Boeing to address what the regulator had raised. He said Spirit’s goal was to reduce to zero the number of defects and errors in its processes.

“Meanwhile, we continue multiple efforts undertaken to improve our safety and quality programs,” Mr. Buccino said. “These improvements focus on human factors and other steps to minimize nonconformities.”

The F.A.A. said it could not release specifics about the audit because of its active investigation into Boeing in response to the Alaska Airlines episode. In addition to that inquiry, the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what caused the door panel to blow off the plane, and the Justice Department has begun a criminal investigation .

During the F.A.A.’s examination, the agency deployed as many as 20 auditors at Boeing and roughly half a dozen at Spirit, according to the slide presentation. Boeing assembles the 737 Max at its plant in Renton, Wash., while Spirit builds the plane’s fuselage at its factory in Wichita, Kan.

The audit at Boeing was wide ranging, covering many parts of the 737 Max, including its wings and an assortment of other systems.

Many of the problems found by auditors fell in the category of not following an “approved manufacturing process, procedure or instruction,” according to the presentation. Some other issues dealt with quality-control documentation.

“It wasn’t just paperwork issues, and sometimes it’s the order that work is done,” Mike Whitaker, the F.A.A. administrator, said at a news conference on Monday. “Sometimes it’s tool management — it sounds kind of pedestrian, but it’s really important in a factory that you have a way of tracking tools effectively so that you have the right tool and you know you didn’t leave it behind. So it’s really plant floor hygiene, if you will, and a variety of issues of that nature.”

One audit dealt with the component that blew off the Alaska Airlines jet, known as a door plug . Boeing failed that check, according to the presentation. Some of the issues flagged by that audit related to inspection and quality-control documentation, though the exact findings were not detailed in the presentation.

The F.A.A.’s examination also explored how well Boeing’s employees understood the company’s quality-control processes. The agency interviewed six company engineers and scored their responses, and the overall average score came out to only 58 percent.

One audit at Spirit that focused on the door plug component found five problems. One of those problems, the presentation said, was that Boeing “failed to provide evidence of approval of minor design change under a method acceptable to the F.A.A.” It was not clear from the presentation what the design change was.

Another audit dealt with the installation of the door plug, and it was among those that Spirit failed. The audit raised concerns about the Spirit technicians who carried out the work and found that the company “failed to determine the knowledge necessary for the operation of its processes.”

Other audits that Spirit failed included one that involved a cargo door and another that dealt with the installation of cockpit windows.
