Natural Resources:

Materials given commonly on earth that can be utilized by living creatures are named to be regular assets. These are the land, the water and the air. The strong peripheral layer of the world's hull is known as the lithosphere. The water that is found on the world's surface, as groundwater, is known as the hydrosphere. The air that covers the entire Earth like a sweeping is known as the air. The district on earth involving both biotic and abiotic segments is called the biosphere.

The Breath Of Life: Air:

Air is a combination of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water fumes. Nitrogen is utilized to create various natural atoms like proteins. Nitrogen is fixed in plants and is moved to creatures through natural way of life. Oxygen is utilized by plants and creatures during the time spent breathing. The burning of non-renewable energy sources likewise requires oxygen. Carbon dioxide is utilized by plants during the time spent photosynthesis. Numerous marine creatures use carbonates broken down in ocean water to make their shells.

The role of the atmosphere in climate control – Atmosphere covers the Earth like a blanket. It prevents the sudden increase of temperature due to sun in the day and also prevents the steady escape of heat from Earth to outer space. Air pollution - Air pollution is the contamination of the air with chemicals, smoke, dust particles, and disease-causing agents. When fossil fuels are burned, distinct nitrogen and sulphur oxides are produced, which dissolve in rain and cause acid rain. The amount of hydrocarbons produced by the combustion of fossil fuels likewise grows. When there are large levels of pollutants present, visibility is reduced. Breathing air contaminated with any of these pollutants on a regular basis raises the risk of allergies, cancer, and heart disease.

Water: A Wonder Liquid:

Water can be found on the surface of the Earth, underground, and as water vapour in the atmosphere. The maximum amount of water available is salty marine water. The amount of water available determines not just the number of individuals of each species that can survive in a given area, but also the diversity of life there.

Water pollution - Water pollution is defined as the introduction of undesired elements into bodies of water. Fertilizers, pesticides, sewage, chemicals, and detergents are examples of undesirable substances. The amount of dissolved oxygen reduces when the temperature of the water rises owing to pollution. Aquatic creatures get their oxygen from dissolved oxygen. Many aquatic organisms die when the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is reduced.

Mineral Riches In The Soil:

Another vital natural resource that sustains life is soil. Soil is made up of particles of soil, humus, and living creatures. In between the soil particles, there is also some water in the form of droplets or air. The soil is made up of the sun, water, wind, and living beings. Uneven rock contraction and expansion splits and breaks them down into smaller soil particles. Frozen water lodged in rock fractures and breaks the boulders, turning them into soil. Lichens that grow on the surface of rocks emit chemicals that break down the rocks and turn them into soil. River water breaks down hard rocks into soil particles. Rocks are eroded and sand particles are carried by strong winds.

Humus is a type of soil that contains pieces of decomposed biological creatures. Because it causes the soil to become more porous and allows water and air to permeate deep underground, it is a crucial element in determining the soil structure. The topsoil is the soil's top layer, which contains humus and live creatures in addition to the soil particles.

Soil pollution - Soil contamination is the addition of pollutants that have a negative impact on soil fertility. The usage of fertilisers resulted in the extinction of many beneficial microorganisms and a reduction in soil fertility. Deforestation has resulted in the erosion of the soil's top most productive layer. Soil erosion was also caused by animal overgrazing. Wind and water can also carry fine soil particles away.

Biogeochemical Cycles:

The transfer of matter and energy between the biotic and abiotic components of the biosphere takes place constantly and thus makes the ecosystem dynamic but stable. These transfers take place through various cycles explained below.

Water Cycle:

The entire method wherein water evaporates and falls at the land as rain and later flows again into the ocean thru rivers is called the water cycle. WHAT ARE NATURAL RESOURCES? Earth is the only one planet on which life exists. Life on earth is dependent upon many factors such as the land, the water, the air, the living things, ambient temperature, food etc. These life supporting factors which are already available on the earth are called natural resources.

BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC RESOURCES BIOTIC RESOURCES:- The living things constitute the biotic resources and ABIOTIC RESOURCES:-The nonliving components such as air, water, land etc constitute the abiotic resources

THE BREATH OF LIFE : AIR What is air? Air is a mixture of different types of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide as well as water vapour etc. Eukaryotic cells and many prokaryotic cells need oxygen for cellular respiration to get energy from the food. Green plants convert carbon dioxide into glucose and provide food to all the biotic community.

FUNCTIONS OF ATMOSPHERE IN CLIMATE CONTROL:- The average temperature of earth is fairly steady during the day and also during the whole year but it ranges from -190˙C to 110˙C in the moon. IN THE MOVEMENT OF AIR:WIND:- Uneven heating of the earth’s surfaces(i.e. on land and water) wind is created. RAIN: By evaporation and condensation rain occurs.

AIR POLLUTION . Presence of any unwanted gas or particles in the air or increasing of some harmful gases cause air pollution

1. How is our atmosphere different from the atmospheres on Venus and Mars?

The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of various gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapour, along with various gases in small quantities, hence making it a balanced and livable than other planets. Planets like Venus and Mars have more than 95% of carbon dioxide in the air making the existence of life impossible.

2. How does the atmosphere act as a blanket?

⇒ It maintains consistency in temperature throughout the day, making it a comfortable place to stay.

⇒ The ozone in the atmosphere is responsible for maintaining the temperature without letting the harmful ultraviolet ray affect it.

3. What causes winds?

The uneven heating of the earth’s surface is the main cause of winds. On being further heated, the air rises up, and low pressure is created. Hence, the air in high pressure occupies the low-pressure region causing the wind.

4. How are clouds formed?

During the day time, in the presence of sunlight, water from sources like well, lakes, ponds, seas, rivers and various other sources gets evaporated. Water vapour rises up with the hot air. At a particular height, the air cools, and the water vapour condenses to form minute droplets to form clouds.

5. List any three human activities that you think would lead to air pollution.

⇒ Burning of fuels like petroleum, kerosene, and coal in the atmosphere.

⇒ The smoke released from manufacturing industries.

⇒ The smoke emitted from vehicles.

1. Why is the atmosphere essential for life?

⇒ The atmosphere is constituted of various main gases like O 2 , N 2 , and CO 2, which are the basis of living of microorganisms, plants and animals.

⇒ Photosynthesis is due to the earth’s atmosphere.

⇒ The constant temperature of the earth is the cause of the earth’s atmosphere.

⇒ Processes like respiration, burning, and combustion are due to the atmosphere.

⇒ The atmosphere is the main reason to restrict UV rays into the earth.

2. Why is water essential for life?

⇒ All the biological activities, such as respiration, digestion and other biological reactions, are supported by water.

⇒ Living beings are composed of more than 70% of water.

⇒ Transportation of substances from one form to another takes place due to the presence of water.

3. How are living organisms dependent on the soil? Are organisms that live in water totally independent of soil as a resource?

All living organisms on the earth, directly or indirectly, are dependent on soil for a living. Plants obtain water and minerals through the soil and prepare their food. Other living organisms that live in water are not totally independent of soil because the microbes growing on the soil in water are the primary producers. Primary producers are the main and chief element of the food chain. Various microbes found in soil help in the decomposition of dead plants and animals in water, which helps in returning the nutrients and elements back to the water.

4. You have seen weather reports on television and in newspapers. How do you think we are able to predict the weather?

Weather is studied as the collection of various elements, like high and low temperatures, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and more, using various figures and facts with relevant instruments. Hence, we are able to forecast the weather, on the basis of the data collected by the meteorologists.

5. We know that many human activities lead to increasing levels of pollution of the air, water-bodies and soil. Do you think that isolating these activities to specific and limited areas would help in reducing pollution?

Human activities are the main reason for the pollution of the air. Air is the medium to spread pollutants into various sources like water and soil. Hence, we can say that limiting activities in certain places will definitely help air pollution to be controlled to some extent.

6. Write a note on how forests influence the quality of our air, soil and water resources.

  • Forests help in purifying the air by absorbing all kinds of pollutants.
  • Forests help in increasing the oxygen level in the air by absorbing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
  • Transpiration helps to maintain the temperature of the surroundings and helps in the formation of clouds.
  • Plants in forests hold the soil, thereby preventing soil erosion.
  • Adds nutrients to the soil as a lot of vegetation present in the forest gets decomposed.
  • Forest helps in bringing rain and increasing the level of water in underground levels
