(Cough cough We won’t say his real name, but one of our team members whose title rhymes with re-bounder once sent out 20 resumes with his name spelled ‘Stepen.’)
One page—plain and simple.
While you might get away with a two-page resume if you’ve got 10-plus years of experience under your hat, keep in mind that recruiters and hiring managers aren’t giving your resume the time of day it deserves anyway.
The most painful part of building a resume is editing yourself. How can your entire career fit into four or five bullet points for each job you’ve had? Here’s some good news: if you’re a senior engineer, it’s totally cool to drop from your resume the server job you had in college.
Even if you whittled the jobs you’d include down to three or four, try starting with a basic resume outline . Fill it to your heart’s content; then, review every job experience bullet point individually and ask, “Does this point show my expertise and say something new?” If the answer’s no, exclude it. Before you know it, you’ll have a polished one-page resume.

This way it will be easy to spot and open by the recruiter.
4. Proofread and proofread again
Proofreading your resume is so important. You want to create the right first impression so check over your resume again for errors or spelling mistakes. Get someone else to proofread it for you before you send it off or make use of a grammar and spelling checker.
5. Convert it to PDF
Chances are your resume makes use of custom fonts, has a special layout or design elements that may break or look bad once opened on a different computer because the custom fonts are missing, the MS Word version is older or whatever. Why use a resume template?
Resume templates are handy tools for job seekers for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allows you to spend more time polishing up the content instead of worrying about the layout and design.
Secondly, it gives first-time job applicants a better idea of how much to write and the sections to focus on. This also applies if you’ve been out of the job market for a while and haven’t had to edit your resume recently.
Before you sprint ahead to the templates, here are some resume dos and don’ts you should know.
Resume dos and don’ts
- Highlight your most relevant experience, skills, and accomplishments
- Include keywords from the job description in your resume where it fits organically
- Triple check your resume for grammar, punctuation, and spelling
- Use data specific examples where possible (e.g. “increased sales by 30% by doing x”)
- Include non-academic and non-professional experiences, such as volunteer work or side projects
- Use powerful verbs to describe your work (e.g “amplified”, “executed”, “maximized”)
- Include your contact information
- Keep your bullet points to under two lines
- Ask someone you trust to go over your resume with you
- Create a master resume. This will make it easier to tailor your resume to any job
- Include all your relevant credentials
- Save your resume file as something with your name on it. This will make it easier for managers and HR folk to locate your files
- Be consistent throughout your application. This means using the same fonts, styles, and naming conventions on your file.
- Showcase your soft skills
- Print out copies of your resume for interviews
Don’t
- Include obvious skills (e.g. gmail)
- Include irrelevant hobbies or interests. That space can be better utilized for highlighting your achievements and skills
- Include work experiences during high school unless you’re a recent graduate
- Use an objective sentence. These are widely considered to be outdated, and only relevant if you are changing careers
- Hide gaps in your resume. Be confident when explaining the gap and speak on the skills you learned during that time
- Use cliches or too much jargon. Oftentimes, the first person reading your resume will be from HR
- Write overly complex sentences. Keep it straightforward and easy to understand
- Use more than two fonts
- Include photos (unless you’re applying for a role in the arts)
- Include your salary history. Save that for the negotiation process
How to optimize your resume for ATS
If you’re applying for a job, there is a very high chance that the resume will first be seen by some software before it makes its way to a pair of human eyes. This software is called an Applicant Tracking System and it sorts, scans, and ranks job applications that come through to a recruiter or employer .
ATS helps recruiters filter through candidates by scanning for relevant information and keywords in an application. Writing a resume that is ATS optimized is imperative, as you could potentially miss out on opportunities even if you’re qualified.
Here are some ways to ensure your resume is ATS-friendly:
- Keep graphics to a minimum
- Incorporate keywords and phrases used in the job description. Don’t overdo this, as resumes with a high match can be flagged for gaming the system
- Save your resume as a PDF (you can easily export as PDF once you’ve edited your Word resume template)
- Some ATS software can’t read data in the header or footer. Ensure all your important information is in the body of your resume
- Avoid using too much formatting
- Make your resume easy to read, for robots and humans. This means avoiding overly wordy sentences and abbreviations where appropriate

Short answer: one page. If you have a lot of work experience (10 years +), sometimes it makes sense to make it 2 pages MAX if everything you mention is super relevant for the position you’re applying for.

How to Write a Resume Summary?
Your resume summary is a “hook” that goes on top of your resume. Think of it as an introduction to the rest of your resume. It should, in 2-4 sentences, explain what your background is, and why it’s relevant for the position you’re applying for.

A few tips for writing a good Resume:
The length of the document..
While recruiting, the employer gets dozens of Resumes. While looking through the documents, they must select a few candidates who are most suitable for the position specified. For one document, the recruiter takes only a few seconds. A Resume that is too long will not be read to the end, and at the same time a lot of information in the Resume will make it completely illegible. That is why it is good to use the minimum content to provide maximum information.

If you have a profile on LinkedIn, regularly updated, with a photo, add a link to your Resume. If you are a graphic designer or a photographer and you have a portfolio on Behance, add a link to your Resume. If you are a developer you have an account on Github, add a web address to your Resume.
Professional summary.
The job summary should be at the top of your Resume. The length of the summary should be between 3 and 5 sentences. The main purpose of the professional summary is to make the candidate's strengths, key skills and experience immediately visible. And to make the introduction interesting enough for the recruiter to read the other sections of the Resume. The form plays an important role. A professional summary should be like a short advertising spot, it should contain what is the most important, there must be keywords. After reading a few sentences of the summary, the employer will know what a certain person can bring to their company.
Soft and hard skills.
Hard skills - refer to the candidate's technical knowledge gained through teaching, training or experience. Technical skills are necessary to perform specific tasks.
Soft skills - these are personality features and habits that, among other things, describe how you work individually or with other people. Soft skills indirectly help to adapt to the work environment and company culture.
Professional experience.
Write the company name and position in bold. Enter the time frame (example: 01/2019 - 05/2020). At the top of the list, write the most important duties performed. Avoid large unreadable blocks. For clarity, always use bullet points. There is no need to include your entire career in your Resume. If there were many employers in your career path, it is worth focusing only on the last or most suitable position for which you are applying. The same applies to skills. Over time, there are more and more skills, but it is not always necessary to list them all. We should focus only on those skills that are relevant to the job profile.
List the schools you have completed by posting the most recent information also at the top of the section. It is worth mentioning completed courses, specialisations. Mark the whole section with start and end dates as well.
This section will be particularly useful for people who do not yet have much professional experience. Information about the candidate's hobbies can partly fill the competence gap. Information about hobbies will also prove useful for candidates whose interests are the driving force at work, thanks to their hobbies they are even better employees. For example, a person who is involved in winter sports, because of their hobby, knows the equipment they use very well, and will be the best advisor and salesman, answering all the questions of the sports shop customers.

Remember your career flow and your professional experience take over your education details once you begin your career. If the job application demands a PhD Holder, an Ivy League Graduate or something very niche and specific then it’s a different ball game.
A recent college graduate however will need to be elaborate in this section.
E) Additional Skills
A man is known by what he does in his free time. So be open and do highlight your additional skills, hobbies and again what makes you unique. The additional skills can be in accordance with the job or completely different. Come on, Steve Jobs was trained in Calligraphy fonts and he built computers.
FUNCTIONAL RESUME FORMAT
If there are any inconsistencies in the career flow or if a candidate wants to change industry or if by just sheer bad luck someone with imperfect work experience is looking to apply for a Job its best to stick the functional resume format. The purpose of this format is to negate the ill effects of the above mentioned. The hiring manager has been trained to look for inconsistencies in your resume and you do not want to give to them that easily. The industry uses a term, "High risk Hire". Your resume should not be categorized in that list.
The flow of the Functional resume format is as stated below.
Apart from the above mentioned, in case you are changing cities it is advisable but not mandatory to arrange for a local number of your target city. Your name, Email address, LinkedIn Profile and a personal website if any will also be placed here.
B) Qualification
If work experience is not your key highlight or if you have an inconsistent work history, its best advisable to begin your resume with your qualifications. It not only takes away the highlight from the specific dates it also adds to the ploy of concealing the inconsistency. Summary of one’s qualification is also a good idea to put your best foot forward right at the beginning of the resume.
C) Personal Achievement
Personal achievement should be highlighted in detail. Remember during the interview this is what is going to cover the gaps in the employment, so every little achievement should be highlighted. This resume format is built on the idea that your achievements are more important than your work history. Free use of bullet points and emphasis on actions rather than specific experience is the key to this.
D) Relevant Skills
What is it that you are bringing on board which is likely to benefit the organization. Come up with at least three relevant skills. For instance, when applying for a sales job, the present contacts, the previous sales figure and your social networking skills are what can be considered your relevant skills. Relevant skill sets will vary from Job to job. For an engineer looking to make it in the movie industry the relevant will be very different from someone moving from sales to finance. Bullet points should be used to highlight each skill. Bullet points very smartly display a candidate’s confidence. Use them freely.
E) Using the Break
If one has to be take care of an ill relative, if one has gone back to school full time, taking care of one’s child, research work, all these are accepted work experience concealer. The more legitimate the reason for the break in employment the better the chances of getting a fair hearing. Better still, if one can show how well have they utilized the time off. If off for a Globe trip highlight the experience you brought back, or that movie you made or the fund you raised for cancer awareness. The key is to put forward your additional and relevant skills of organizing, discipline and research.

If you have finished typing and formatting a Word document, but later realize that you need to duplicate the styles to another document, you can export the existing styles to save time and ensure consistency. Let's take a look at how we do that.
If you want to repeatedly use the same modified styles in various documents (for example, if you're creating business documentation using the same logo, typeface, font size, etc.), you should instead create a Word template . Continue reading below if you want to quickly copy the styles from one document to another, without having to create a template.
Prepare Your Word Documents
Before you start the process of copying the styles, you need to have finished Document 1—containing the modified styles that you have created —and have Document 2 ready to go. Document 2 can be either a blank document in which you are going to start new work, or an existing document whose styles you want to match to Document 1.
In this article, we will refer to the existing document containing the styles you want to export as Document 1, and the document to which you will be importing the styles as Document 2.
Save both documents to your preferred location, close Document 2, and leave Document 1 open.
In Document 1, in the Home tab on the ribbon, click the "Styles Pane" icon, or press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S.
In the Styles Pane, click the Manage Styles icon (the capital A with a check mark on it) towards the bottom.
In the Manage Styles window that opens, click "Import/Export."
The Organizer will now open.
Open the Styles tab in this window. The document on the left is the one we have open and are currently working with (in our case, Document 1), and the document on the right is a standard template file by default.
We want to have Document 1 and Document 2 displayed here, so click "Close File" under the template file displayed on the right.
Now, "Close File" will change to "Open File." Click "Open File."
When your Open window appears, in the File Type drop-down box on the right, change the option to "All Files." Locate Document 2 and click "Open."
You will now see the Organizer open again, but this time, with Document 1 displayed on the left and Document 2 displayed on the right. We're now ready to copy the styles across.
Locate a style in the left-hand list that you want to copy from Document 1 to Document 2. If you want to export multiple styles at the same time, click the first style you want to copy, hold Ctrl, and then click the other styles you want to copy. In our case, we have used the Title, Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles in Document 1, so these will be the ones we will choose to export to Document 2. Then, click "Copy."
You are likely to see a warning appear, asking whether you want to overwrite existing styles in Document 2. This is because Document 2 already has styles under the same names as those you're exporting from Document 1. However, you do, indeed, want to overwrite these, so click "Yes To All".
Finally, click "Close" and, if prompted, "Save" the changes you've just made to Document 2.
Save and close Document 1.
Now, open Document 2, and you will see that the styles are the same as those in Document 1.
If Document 2 is a blank document, you can start typing your work with the knowledge that you're using the same styles as in Document 1. If Document 2 is an existing document containing text, your styles will automatically update to match those in Document 1 (providing the styles you exported from Document 1 had the same names as those you had already used in Document 2).
You can open any pair of documents you wish in the style "Organizer", and freely import and export styles between them as required. You can also assign a shortcut key to a style in Word for easier use later on.
Create a form in Word that users can complete or print
In Word, you can create a form that others can fill out and save or print. To do this, you will start with baseline content in a document, potentially via a form template. Then you can add content controls for elements such as check boxes, text boxes, date pickers, and drop-down lists. Optionally, these content controls can be linked to database information. Following are the recommended action steps in sequence.
Show the Developer tab
In Word, be sure you have the Developer tab displayed in the ribbon. (See how here: Show the developer tab .)
Open a template or a blank document on which to base the form
You can start with a template or just start from scratch with a blank document.
Start with a form template
Go to File > New .
In the Search for online templates field, type Forms or the kind of form you want. Then press Enter .
In the displayed results, right-click any item, then select Create.
Start with a blank document
Select Blank document .
Add content to the form
Go to the Developer tab Controls section where you can choose controls to add to your document or form. Hover over any icon therein to see what control type it represents. The various control types are described below. You can set properties on a control once it has been inserted.
To delete a content control, right-click it, then select Remove content control in the pop-up menu.
Note: You can print a form that was created via content controls. However, the boxes around the content controls will not print.
Insert a text control
The rich text content control enables users to format text (e.g., bold, italic) and type multiple paragraphs. To limit these capabilities, use the plain text content control .
Click or tap where you want to insert the control.

Insert a picture control
A picture control is most often used for templates, but you can also add a picture control to a form.
Insert a building block control
Use a building block control when you want users to choose a specific block of text. These are helpful when you need to add different boilerplate text depending on the document's specific purpose. You can create rich text content controls for each version of the boilerplate text, and then use a building block control as the container for the rich text content controls.
Select Developer and content controls for the building block.
Insert a combo box or a drop-down list
In a combo box, users can select from a list of choices that you provide or they can type in their own information. In a drop-down list, users can only select from the list of choices.
Select the content control, and then select Properties .
To create a list of choices, select Add under Drop-Down List Properties .
Type a choice in Display Name , such as Yes , No , or Maybe .
Repeat this step until all of the choices are in the drop-down list.
Fill in any other properties that you want.
Note: If you select the Contents cannot be edited check box, users won’t be able to click a choice.
Insert a date picker
Click or tap where you want to insert the date picker control.

Click or tap where you want to insert the check box control.
Use the legacy form controls
Legacy form controls are for compatibility with older versions of Word and consist of legacy form and Active X controls.
Click or tap where you want to insert a legacy control.
Select the Legacy Form control or Active X Control that you want to include.
Set or change properties for content controls
Each content control has properties that you can set or change. For example, the Date Picker control offers options for the format you want to use to display the date.
Select the content control that you want to change.
Go to Developer > Properties .
Change the properties that you want.
Add protection to a form
If you want to limit how much others can edit or format a form, use the Restrict Editing command:
Open the form that you want to lock or protect.
Select Developer > Restrict Editing .
After selecting restrictions, select Yes, Start Enforcing Protection .
Advanced Tip:
If you want to protect only parts of the document, separate the document into sections and only protect the sections you want.
To do this, choose Select Sections in the Restrict Editing panel. For more info on sections, see Insert a section break .

Open a template or use a blank document
To create a form in Word that others can fill out, start with a template or document and add content controls. Content controls include things like check boxes, text boxes, and drop-down lists. If you’re familiar with databases, these content controls can even be linked to data.
Go to File > New from Template .
In Search, type form .
Double-click the template you want to use.
Select File > Save As , and pick a location to save the form.
In Save As , type a file name and then select Save .

Default text sets optional instructional text that's displayed in the text box before the user types in the field. Set Text box enabled to allow the user to enter text into the field.
Maximum length sets the length of text that a user can enter. The default is Unlimited .
Text format can set whether text automatically formats to Uppercase , Lowercase , First capital, or Title case .
Text box enabled Lets the user enter text into a field. If there is default text, user text replaces it.
Set specific properties for a Check box .
Default Value Choose between Not checked or checked as default.
Checkbox size Set a size Exactly or Auto to change size as needed.
Check box enabled Lets the user check or clear the text box.
Set specific properties for a Combo box
Drop-down item Type in strings for the list box items. Press + or Enter to add an item to the list.
Items in drop-down list Shows your current list. Select an item and use the up or down arrows to change the order, Press - to remove a selected item.
Drop-down enabled Lets the user open the combo box and make selections.
Protect the form
Go to Developer > Protect Form .
Note: To unprotect the form and continue editing, select Protect Form again.
Save and close the form.
Test the form (optional)
If you want, you can test the form before you distribute it.
Protect the form.
Reopen the form, fill it out as the user would, and then save a copy.
Creating fillable forms isn’t available in Word for the web.
You can create the form with the desktop version of Word with the instructions in Create a fillable form .
When you save the document and reopen it in Word for the web, you’ll see the changes you made.
