It is caused in many ways. Sometimes rain falls heavily for days together. The rainwater of mountains flows down the river. Sometimes the river can not contain so much water. Then the water overflows the rivers and inundates the adjacent lands. Unplanned highways and embankments without proper outlets of water cause floods. In a word, a sudden rush of water overflows the banks of rivers or canals and causes the flood.

Again, there is a heavy rainfall in the mountainous regions. Much of this rainwater flows down through the different rivers and the:in tributaries of our country. Then our rivers cannot hold more water. As a result, they suddenly overflow their banks and cause the flood. Moreover, sudden tidal waves or the melting of ice and snow also caused it here.

Recent floods of Bangladesh: Flood hasă become an annual affair in Bangladesh. Most of the floods that occurred in the years of 1954, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1987 and 1988 were very fearful and disastrous. But the flood in 1998 broke all the previous records. Many men and cattle were killed. Many people were rendered homeless the flood was most devastating and unprecedented. They attracted the attention of the world people. Most of the villages, towns, and districts went under water. Those floods caused also great damages to the life and property of people.

Bad effects: Floods cause great damages. It brings untold suffering to the people. Many people and cattle die and many men are rendered homeless. It also damages standing crops and property. Communication is cut off and as a result, normal life remains suspended. During the last few years the floods that occurred in Bangladesh, caused much harm and miseries to the people. Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries of the world. If we fail to prevent floods which cause a huge loss every year, our development plans and programmes will be scattered.

Good effects: Floods has also a bright side. They are, indeed, a mixed evil. The silt carried by them makes the soil fertile. They irrigate the hard and fallow land. Besides, they wash away the accumulated waste-materials which are the source of diseases.

After – effects of floods: Floods are followed by deadly diseases like cholera, typhoid waterborne disease etc. Damages of crops cause famine and scarcity of drinking water also causes misfortuneș. Many men die of lack of proper food, medicine, and sanitation.

Flood control measures: Considering the bad effects and damages caused by the flood, the people / we always think of its remedy or preventive methods. The flood damages need an immediate controlling. Proper and effective steps should be adopted . to control floods so that they cannot cause a huge loss. The irrigation system should be introduced in some places where floods occur too often. Some rivers should be dredged periodically so that they can hold more water. Besides, obstacles to the natural flow of water need to be removed so that excessive water may flow easily. Again suitable dams and barrages should be erected to control the overflow the rivers. Some of our rivers come down from the Himalayas. So our government should take active steps to reach an amicable settlement with India and Nepal for the prevention of floods.

Tourists planning holiday to such places can postpone or cancel the plan when there is still time and avoid the trauma caused by this situation.

Flash Floods

Flash floods mostly occur within a very short duration of time such as a few hours or even minutes. These are mostly caused due to heavy rainfall, melting of snow or dam break. These are known to be the most fatal among all and can result in mass destruction as these are almost sudden and people do not get any time to take caution.

Though we cannot do much about the rain or the melting of the glaciers however we can certainly build good drainage systems to deal with the water they bring along. Many countries, such as Singapore that receive heavy rainfall for most part of the year, have really good drainage system. They come out clean even after days of heavy downpour. The government of India must also build good drainage system in order to avoid the problem of flood and the damage it does to the affected regions.

All the heavy rainfalls flow to low land and rivers, and when the water over flows the river banks then that is called as flood. Sometimes it also causes due to melting of snow on mountains. And when it reaches to the surface it causes flood.

Before buildings are built it is necessary to check that ways of water are not blocked. Drainage systems should be kept free from objects that chock them. Drainage system should be covered to prevent insects and other animals from getting into the container.

Trees, grass help to protect the land from nutritious free. People use the method of vegetation to protect themselves of moving flood water.

Without the proper knowledge it becomes very difficult for people to survive from flood. Education is very important to inform people about the dangerous effects of flood. Without proper knowledge it becomes very difficult for people to get cure.

During the time of flood the government of India adopts various methods to prevent the people from suffering. They provide short term and long term relief. Short term relief means immediate relief like food, cloth and medicines. Long terms mean free distribution of remission of rent.

All this requires great engineering and heavy expenses. Government also provides funds.

Rivers can overflow their banks to cause a flood. This can happen when there is more water upstream than usual, and as it flows downstream to the adjacent low-lying areas there is a burst and water gets into the land.

Seawater can be carried by massive winds and hurricanes onto the dry coastal lands and cause flooding. This is made worse if the winds carry rains with themselves. Sometimes water from the sea resulting from a tsunami can flow inland to cause damage.

The most immediate effect of a flood is the catastrophic loss of life and destruction of buildings and other structures like bridges, sewerage systems, canals etc.

Floods also damage power transmission and sometimes power generation along loss of drinking water treatment and water supply Lack of clean water combined with human sewage in the flood waters raises the risk of waterborne diseases, which can include typhoid, cholera and many other diseases depending upon the location of the flood.

On the next day of Rakhi, the river started overflowing. The water entered the low-lying villages. The water was quickly rising in the streets. People started leaving their houses. Panic spread everywhere. People started coming on their roofs. Some villages were badly affected.

The government machinery swung into action. It was pressed into rescue operations. Boats were made available to vacate the villages. People were loading their valuables in the boats. They were being taken to the dry and safe areas. Animals were the worst hit. Many of them could not be saved.

There were relief camps in the safe areas to help flood-affected people. Teams of doctors and nurses were there to give medical treatment. They were providing first aid to the suffering people. Coastal floods are another name for surge floods. Floods that arise in the coastal areas because of storm surges and tidal changes are called surge floods. Surges are produced when strong winds from a windstorm, tsunami, or hurricane push water toward low-lying shorelines. Surge floods are at their most destructive during high tides.

3. Pluvial Floods

Floods caused by heavy rain are also known as pluvial floods. However, they can occur even in locations far from the overflowing water bodies and are independent of those bodies of water. Surface water floods and flash floods are the two types of pluvial floods.

Effects Of A Flood

Mass Destruction: Following the floods, widespread loss of human life, property, infrastructure, and vegetation is not uncommon. The majority of survivors suffer injuries. Animals perish, and the soil quality of the drowned region declines.
Power Cuts: Floods lead to extended power cuts due to the destruction.
Shortage in Food Supply: Food supply and necessities are scarce.
Diseases: Flood aftereffects include spreading water-borne illnesses like dengue, malaria, etc.

What Are The Ways To Prevent A Flood?

1. Build Structures Above Flood Levels

In order to protect both the residents and the property, buildings in flood-prone areas must be built on higher grounds than the flood level.

2. Systems for Flood Warning

Better flood warning systems must be installed immediately to provide people ample time to prepare themselves and their things for the impending disaster.

3. Erect Flood Barriers

Flood barriers should be implemented in locations prone to flooding. When the water has subsided, these can be taken out.

4. Water Storage System Introduction

The government must establish water storage infrastructure to store and reuse rainwater. Instead of allowing it to overflow on the plains and causing flooding, this will allow the extra water to be used.

5. Consolidate the Drainage System

The inadequate drainage system is one of the primary causes of floods. Building effective drainage systems are crucial to preventing water logging, which causes flooding.
