It’s a skill that will set you apart.

As a new leader, learning to make good decisions without hesitation and procrastination is a capability that can set you apart from your peers. While others vacillate on tricky choices, your team could be hitting deadlines and producing the type of results that deliver true value. That’s something that will get you — and them — noticed. Here are a few of a great decision:

Great decisions are shaped by consideration of many different viewpoints. This doesn’t mean you should seek out everyone’s opinion. The right people with the relevant expertise need to clearly articulate their views to help you broaden your perspective and make the best choice.
Great decisions are made as close as possible to the action. Remember that the most powerful people at your company are rarely on the ground doing the hands-on work. Seek input and guidance from team members who are closest to the action.
Great decisions address the root cause, not just the symptoms. Although you may need to urgently address the symptoms, once this is done you should always develop a plan to fix the root cause, or else the problem is likely to repeat itself.
Great decisions balance short-term and long-term value. Finding the right balance between short-term and long-term risks and considerations is key to unlocking true value.
Great decisions are timely. If you consider all of the elements listed above, then it’s simply a matter of addressing each one with a heightened sense of urgency.

How to Make a Decision When There’s No ‘Right’ One

In 1838, Charles Darwin faced a problem. Nearing his 30th birthday, he was trying to decide whether to marry — with the likelihood that children would be part of the package.

To help make his decision, Darwin made a list of the expected pluses and minuses of marrying. On the left-hand side he tried to imagine what it would be like to be married (“constant companion,” “object to be beloved & played with — better than a dog anyhow”). On the right-hand side he tried to imagine what it would be like not to marry (“not forced to visit relatives & to bend in every trifle”).

Darwin was struggling with what I call a wild problem — a fork in the road of life where knowing which path is the right one isn’t obvious, where the day-to-day pleasure and pain from choosing one path over another are ultimately hidden from us and where those day-to-day pleasures and pains don’t fully capture what’s at stake.

There might be a mere handful of such decisions like this that we face — whether to marry, whom to marry, whether to have children, whether to switch careers and take on new responsibilities. Often there is little evidence to guide us, and what little evidence is available can mislead us.

How should we proceed, then, especially if we want to make a rational decision?

I was trained as an economist at the University of Chicago. We were taught that economics is the guide to making rational choices in life. We were taught that everything has a price; everything involves giving up something to have something else. Nothing is of infinite value. But as I’ve studied the lives of some of history’s great thinkers, I have come to believe that when it comes to the big decisions of life, those principles can lead us astray.

Take Darwin’s list. At first glance, making a list of pluses and minuses seems like a rational approach for dealing with any problem, wild or tame. The technique is probably as old as Eve in the garden facing the wild problem of whether to eat that fruit. (Minuses: It will annoy the Head Gardener, ignorance is bliss, gaining knowledge may come with unexpected downsides. Pluses: Snake seems like a pleasant fellow, forbidden fruit is sweetest, and so on.) But as we’ll see, the cost-benefit list that Darwin constructed is less helpful than it might appear. Let’s take a look at part of it:

Marry Children — (if it please God) — constant companion (& friend in old age) who will feel interested in one — object to be beloved & played with — better than a dog anyhow — home & someone to take care of house — charms of music & female chitchat — these things good for one’s health — forced to visit & receive relations but terrible loss of time. Not marry No children (no second life), no one to care for one in old age. — What is the use of working without sympathy from near & dear friends — who are near & dear friends to the old, except relatives Freedom to go where one liked — choice of society & little of it — conversation of clever men at clubs — not forced to visit relatives & to bend in every trifle — to have the expense & anxiety of children — perhaps quarelling — loss of time — cannot read in the evenings — fatness & idleness — anxiety & responsibility — less money for books &c — if many children forced to gain one’s bread — (but then it is very bad for ones health to work too much) Perhaps my wife wont like London, then the sentence is banishment & degradation into indolent, idle fool

Darwin managed to come up with more minuses than pluses if he married. Though he didn’t write it down explicitly, it’s pretty clear what he considered the biggest minus: If he married, he’d have less time for his scientific research and be less productive. He might not become a great scientist. Staying single seemed to be the rational option.

Darwin desperately wanted to know if he would like marriage more than staying single. But his list tells us more about Darwin than it does about marriage. His list of pluses and minuses — especially the pluses — is the list that someone would make who has never been married and has no access to the upside of the inner life of a married man. Darwin’s ignorance is part of the reason his negatives about marriage (Banishment! Degradation! Idle fool!) are so emphatic and his positives are so mild (female chitchat). His cluelessness helps us see just how hard it is to make what looks like a rational decision.

And notice that there’s little in Darwin’s list about devotion to another human being or love or the pleasures and pains of cleaving to another person, ideally for life. Nothing about the pleasure of making someone else happy, nothing about the opportunity to soothe his spouse’s sorrows. It’s all about him, which makes sense; he’d never had a partner. How would he know about the power of a shared life?

To Darwin, looking in from the outside, marriage was overwhelmingly about what he would give up. And marriage does involve restrictions. Being married does mean you can’t necessarily live where you want. You can’t do what you want with your time. Your sexual freedom is almost certainly curtailed. It’s all about “can’t.”

Similarly, what does it mean to have children? A lot more “can’t.” Parenthood is when you can’t go on real vacations anymore. You can’t buy that new car because it doesn’t have a back seat. Plus, you have to save for college, pay the babysitter. You can’t afford that car you would have wanted anyway. With many wild problems, the downside is easily imagined, while the upside is veiled from us. That’s one reason wild problems are so hard to tame with the standard tools of rationality.

If Darwin had known me and asked me what it’s like to be a parent, I would have told him that having children connects you to your parents and brings you closer to them in ways you never could have imagined. That it’s part of the human enterprise that’s unlike any other part of the ride. That it’s a taste of immortality. That the decision isn’t just about the expected day-to-day costs and benefits but more about who you are and how you see yourself. Marriage and parenting suffuse our days in ways we cannot imagine until we’ve experienced them.

Does that take some of the pressure off as you think about making a life choice? Maybe. Maybe it’s comforting to know that there isn’t a rational route to the right decision.

Most of Darwin’s list seems to point him toward a life of staying single. Yet he decided to marry, seemingly putting his sober list of pluses and minuses aside, writing in a much more emotional vein:

My God, it is intolerable to think of spending one’s whole life, like a neuter bee, working, working & nothing after all. — No, no won’t do. — Imagine living all one’s day solitarily in smoky dirty London house. — Only picture to yourself a nice soft wife on a sofa with good fire & books & music perhaps. — Compare this vision with the dingy reality of Grt. Marlbro’ St. Marry — Mary — Marry Q.E.D.

Less than a year later, Darwin married his cousin Emma Wedgwood. Together they had 10 children; seven survived to adulthood. And somehow, despite or perhaps because of his decision to go through life with a wife and children at his side, Darwin managed to become one of the greatest scientists of all time and forever changed our understanding of who we human beings are.

But why did Darwin ignore the calm, cerebral calculus he laid out in his journal? What’s the lesson to be learned from his decision-making process?

I have to speculate a little here, but I think he realized, as most of us do, that life is about more than just the sum of the day-to-day pleasures and pains that follow from our choices. Adding up costs and benefits — what I call narrow utilitarianism — may seem like the height of rationality. But it can easily undervalue the most important but less obvious aspects of a life well lived. A broader view doesn’t always point to marriage. It can also point to staying single or getting divorced. But the important lesson is to think about life as more than accumulating pleasure or avoiding pain.

Human beings want purpose. We want meaning. We want to belong to something larger than ourselves. The decisions we make in the face of wild problems don’t just lead to good days and bad days. They define us. They determine who we are, who we might aspire to become, who we might come to be.

And this, I think, is the key to how we approach our own wild problems. Darwin’s decision looks irrational only until we remember that the future is veiled from us and that life is about more than simple pluses and minuses. Darwin accepted, I think, that daily happiness was less important than how he thought he should live his life and who and what he wanted to become.

My advice? Learn from Darwin. Spend less time trying to figure out the best path to get to where we want to go and spend more time thinking about where we want to go in the first place.

On occasion I ask students in my undergraduate ethics course at Santa Clara University to relate their first ethical memory--what was their first choice about right or wrong, good or bad? Most of them relate a story about a six or seven-year-old confronting a choice between honesty and desire--the ill-gotten piece of sweet, juicy bubble gum; the quickly denied detour on the way home from school to "the forbidden playground"; the resounding claim of ignorance when asked who had been using the house as a backstop just prior to the crackle and sparkle of shattered plate glass. Indeed, these are all fine examples of ethical dilemmas, those decisions between what we want to do and what we ought to do that we have been making all our lives.

All of our lives, we've been struggling with just how it is that we ought to decide. Are there lists to be made--columns of "good results" and "bad results" to be conceived, compared, and contrasted? Are there rules to follow--do this; don't do that? Are there good ways to be--be patient; don't lose your temper? We struggle not only with what in fact we ought to do, but also with how in the world we are to decide whether it is right to lie just this once.

We all tend to approach decisions about right and wrong in one of three ways. First, there are those folks who think that the results make all the difference. Why won't you lie? It will hurt people; the results are bad. Second, there are those people who follow the rules. Why won't you lie? There's a rule that says to always tell the truth, "to do unto others as you would have them do unto you." And, thirdly, there are those individuals who aren't much interested in either results or rules. They are interested in the kind of person you are--a person of compassion or courage. Why won't you lie? Because I'm an honest person, a truthful person; that's just the kind of person I am. Results; rules; character traits--all are important parts of how we decide.

Part of what makes decisions about right and wrong so difficult for us is that we don't all go about it in the same way. That is just fine, really. Such diversity in how we decide reflects the rich tapestry of resources we each bring to our decision making. Although some may argue for good results and others for following the rules, one thing is certain: Ethics is always more than just what we might like or dislike, always more than rash opinion. My choice never to eat spinach is not an ethical choice; it merely has to do with the chemistry of my taste buds and a particular leafy green vegetable. I don't like spinach! What ethics requires of us is making judgments that we can explain, making judgments that rely not on opinion or our taste buds, but on results or rules or good habits. We need to remember that how we decide is just as important as what we decide.

The Ethical Dilemma – How to Make the Right Decision Essay

Introduction, my ethical dilemma.

The issue of ethical dilemma is something human beings cannot let alone. It is evident that it remains part of their life. Someone finds himself in such a dilemma. Most of the time it is proper to make the right decision when in such a situation.

Personally, I believe the right decision always lies with your conscience. When in an ethical dilemma, making the right decision goes a long way in measuring someone’s ability to be responsible in future (Carter, C. & Clegg, S, pp 125).

Sometime last week I was faced with an ethical dilemma which made me choose between friendship and truth. I was at home watching movies with one of my schoolmates. Then a kitten jumped through the window and in to the house. I did not mind as am used to seeing it in our home most of the time.

It belonged to the next door neighbor. My friend got so excited and even held it in his palm. He kept on telling me how cute it was. He went to the extent of saying he will leave with it, I thought he was joking. In the evening, I decided to see him off. He begged me to allow him go home with the kitten and bring it back tomorrow.

I did not want to allow him do this, as I knew the first place our neighbor could come looking for her kitten was our home. We argued for a long time, and at last I allowed him to leave with it just to please him because he was my friend.

As we were walking down the road the kitten jumped off my friend’s palm straight into a truck’s path. It was knocked down and died on the spot. My friend begged me not to tell the owner what had happened. He even made me swear, and because he was my pal I accepted everything just not to hurt him.

When I went home that evening, I found my neighbor at my place. I was asked whether I had seen the kitten. I did not know what to say. If I told the truth, I was going to lose my friend. If i told a lie, I would save my friendship but I could not stand the guilt of lie to my parents. I also believed my neighbor needed to know what happened to her kitten. After a lot of thinking, i decided to tell the truth.

It is noteworthy that I acted in the right manner, as I could not tell a lie just to protect my friend. He acted unethically, and I should not do the same by protecting him. I find it so uncomfortable, when I have to swear not to do something then I end up not honoring my oath.

In this situation, I could not hide the truth when I knew clearly what consequences I was going to face. I knew I could still talk to my friend and tell him why I chose to stick to the truth. I could not allow my friend to manipulate me in to tainting my ethical integrity (Trevino, L & Nelson, K, pp 7).

I believe when someone is in an ethical predicament he is supposed to make a decision that will stand the taste of time. Making decisions just to suit that particular time, and external factors may not work appropriately.

When one makes such a decision he must be affected to some extent. If I could have protected my friend, I could always feel the guilty whenever in the presence of my neighbor. I also could have branded my self a dishonest person (Trevino, L & Nelson, K, pp 9).

For my whole life, I have been making decisions. Whether they were small or big, there will always be decisions. Earlier I was deciding whether I should start my essay or continue watching my dramas, but I chose to start this essay instead because that is the right decision. And if we really think about it, every single decision we have made led it us to this right exact moment. And if we do change anything in the slightest, it would be very different right now. So, every decision is important into leading into the right path in the future. By doing this, it allows you to become one step closer to your dreams. By making the decision that is righteous and intelligent, it helps you become and better person that is wiser and mature.

Dreams are something that I wish to be or want to come true. And making them come true is not always very easy because life can get in the way and with that comes the obstacles of people telling you that you can’t do it or you just do not have the right circumstances to pursue those dreams. But excuses like those should never be the reason why you gave up. Making dreams come to me, is a really important thing. I want to be able to get to where I want to be, which is to be a professional dancer or a choreographer for a school. Making this choice made me so incredibly happy because it was when I decided to break free from the chains of expectations holding me down from being the best that I can be.

From then on, I have decided to go against my parents and participate in as much performing arts class as I possibly could. I took choir, dance and theatre to learn about the basics of the stage and how to perform. By choosing to take those classes, it will help me improve in the skills that I need, in order to have an advantage in the field that I wanted to major in.

Styles include trusting your instincts, weighing the pros and cons, and asking the advice of friends. Or choose to not decide hoping that a particular situation will resolve itself. What is the most successful strategy? According to a research report in the European Management Journal :

“Rationality and intuition are important dimensions of the strategic decision process...the interplay between rationality and intuition [was] based on a sample of 103 strategic decisions made by service firms in Greece.” (Thanos 2023)

Why Relying on Intuition or Trusting Instincts Is a Valid Decision-Making Strategy

In researching a book on decision-making for women, the power of intuition was evident. Sometimes referred to as a sixth sense or women’s intuition, researchers have documented the value of this strategy with men as well.

Using a journal will help guide you and may give you an idea as to the patterns of decision-making that are stressful and how to handle these stresses. While logical steps to decision-making combined with intuition are valuable, it’s your intuition that may give you the edge.
