During these trials, a drug might get approved for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or a medical device approved for consumer or hospital use. 

Clinical research associates (CRA) play a critical role in the health care industry and improving public health . They act as liaisons between those who sponsor research and those who facilitate clinical research. Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, rising population density and international travel have increased the spread of new and existing diseases. Clinical research is necessary to gain evidence-based insights on how well a drug or vaccine does.

What is a clinical research associate?

Clinical research associates, also called “monitors,” are individuals who act as liaisons between the institutions that sponsor and fund the clinical research trials, and the clinics that conduct the research. They are in charge of making sure the clinical trials run smoothly, monitoring all the procedures, processes, and results, ensuring the researchers are following established guidelines and protocols every step of the way. 

A clinical research associate works on behalf of the sponsor (pharmaceutical company, university, or health organization) or for a contract research organization (CRO). The CRO typically funds the research. Clinical trials are the long, scientific process of ensuring that certain drugs, therapies, and devices are safe and effective for public consumption and use. CRAs guide the trials forward in accordance with regulations for ethics and safety.

How to become a clinical research associate.

A career as a CRA can be fulfilling because you are essentially a part-translator, part-project manager, and part administrator for trials that have the potential to save lives. Here’s how to get started as a clinical research associate.

1. Earn a degree.

To become a CRA, you’ll want to earn a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field. Consider a major in health sciences, nursing, medical technology, or biological sciences. Degrees in the humanities or social sciences, such as sociology or psychology, can also be helpful in providing a strong framework for research insights as a CRA. The degree should provide the foundation you’ll need to pursue clinical research associate and technician roles. 

2. Get certified.

While you do not need a certification to become a clinical research associate, having one can differentiate you from other candidates when it comes to being hired or promoted in this role. You can choose from certifications offered by two different organizations. 

The Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP)

The ACRP offers the Certified Clinical Research Associate credential. To earn this certification, you must have one of the following:

A bachelor’s degree and at least 3,000 hours of experience as a CRA

A current CCRC, CPI or ACRP-CP certification and be able to substitute 1,500 hours of work experience

Completed a clinical research degree program and be able to substitute 1,500 hours of work experience

CCRA applicants must submit proof of their current job description and resume, and pass the CCRA exam. They must also complete 24 hours of continuing education, and be recertified every two years in order to maintain their certification. Through the ACRP, you can also become certified as a research coordinator, principal investigator, and clinical professional.

The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA)

The SOCRA offers the Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) credential. To earn this certification, you must have one of the following:

At least two years of clinical research experience or 3,500 hours of part-time experience in the past five years

A degree in clinical research and at least one year of full-time experience

A certificate in clinical research, a bachelor’s or associate degree in health science, science, or a related field, and at least one year of full-time work experience

SOCRA applicants must pass the CCRP exam, and be recertified every three years. To become recertified, you’ll need to complete 45 hours of continuing education. 

The main difference between the certifications offered by SOCRA and ACRP is that ACRP only certifies clinical research associates, but SOCRA’s CCRP certification applies to other types of clinical research professionals.

3. Apply for jobs.

When you have the necessary qualifications to become a CRA, you can start applying for jobs. Visit job sites such as Indeed or LinkedIn and type in “clinical research associate” to search for entry or junior-level positions.

Position Summary:  Functioning somewhat independently, incumbent assists with and conducts laboratory experiments on research projects within well-defined guidelines; keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within area of research; collects, prepares, and analyzes specimens (or animal subjects); evaluates results of (or response to) process; summarizes data; may provide supervision and guidance to junior level technicians.

• Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens and/or tissue cultures.
• Assists in making chemical analyses of body fluids and tissues; performs venipuncture and obtains blood specimens.
• Weighs and anesthetizes laboratory animals for experiments and maintains records on such animals relative to feeding and physical condition.
• Operates laboratory equipment; contributes to laboratory maintenance.
• Performs a variety of assays, tests, and studies of a routine nature.
• Performs calculations to complete research test results; collates data; performs statistical analysis of lab results and maintain notes and log or computer database; performs basic procedures for computer assisted data analysis.
• Assists in small animal surgery.
• Prepares stock chemical solutions, offer solutions, radioisotope solutions.
• Performs photography and dark room processing.
• Performs electron microscopy, x-ray, and electrochemical techniques.
• Performs library research.
• Assists in screening and examining of patients/subjects.
• Participates in training sessions and workshops.

Minimum Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in a basic or health science.  (zero - three years relevant experience may be required by the department, in addition to the Bachelor's degree).

Research Associate 2

Position Summary:  Similar to duties and responsibilities of Research Associate 1, but functions more independently, and work is more complex and specialized.  Often responsible for maintaining the efficient operation of the laboratory.  Assists principal investigator with summarization, analysis, and organization of data for publication; may assist with preparation of grant applications; assists and/or teaches graduate students and others rotating through the lab; often responsible for supervision and training of junior research personnel.

• Calibrates, set up, and repairs laboratory equipment.
• Devises methods for testing in the laboratory.
• Maintains highly detailed records of the stages of development of tests and the final results thereof.
• Performs specialized and complex experiments in such areas as molecular biology, cell culture, animal surgery, and pathological examination of specimens.
• Performs small animal surgery.
• Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment and/or perform computer applications.
• Maintains safe and efficient procedures in the laboratory; handle radioactive and hazardous waste.
• Performs a wide variety of assays, tests, and studies of non-routine nature.
• Provides instruction and training to interns, residents, and medical students.
• Interviews patients relative to health history and perform screening.
• Performs library research and assist in the preparation of grants and manuscripts.

Minimum Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in a basic or health science, plus three years of relevant experience.  (Department may require additional relevant experience, as long as the total years of experience is less than five years).  Or Master's degree in a basic or health science. (In addition to the Master's degree, the department may require zero to two years of relevant experience).

Research Associate 3

Position Summary:   Plans, organizes, and conducts highly independent research upon approval of the principal investigator; designs, tests, and evaluates methods and protocol for research projects; analyzes, summarizes, and organizes collected data; together with principal investigator, generally publishes results of investigations in professional journals.  Purchase and/or recommend purchase of new equipment for research projects; under the direction of the principal investigator, generally responsible for the scientific operations of the laboratory; may supervise laboratory/unit personnel.

• Researches new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reports to the principal investigator relative to feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments.
• Adapts procedures or methods relative to changes in research projects.
• Designs and implements research protocols; designs safety procedures.
• Collates and analyzes complex data.  Maintains microcomputer database.
• Summarizes completed protocols and studies; writes scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation.
• Supervises the safe handling or radioactive and hazardous material; coordinates purchasing requests and writes specifications and justifications for equipment purchases.
• Supervises junior research associates, graduate students, and student workers in the laboratory.
• Prepares analytical reports relative to research data.
• Monitors progress of research projects and coordinates information between departmental sections.
• Performs a wide and complex variety of assays, test, and studies.
• Performs highly specialized and advanced experiments.
• Collects, prepares, analyzes, and evaluates specimens and/or tissue cultures.

• Working on the project under the guidance of the supervisor: Research Associates are provided with the project in different scientific fields as required by UGC. They also get meaningful guidance from their supervisor who is a professor or head of the department of the institute.
• Handling labs and other experimental activities: Since the research associate has to perform several experiments and activities their comes in need the lab and its equipment should be handled to carefully during the work.
• Submitting the progress report on the project to the authorities after specified periods: The essential part of RA is to prepare an annual progress report on the research work done shall be an essential part of the Associate’s  work. This report is needed to be submitted within a period of 15 days after completion of one year tenure of associateship through his/her Guide/Head of the Department.
• He or she can get consent from UGC to take up a temporary paid lectureship/research job in a recognized R&D University, College/Institute of Repute.

RA Benefits and Allowances

The following is the list of benefits and allowances provided to the research assistants:

• DA: Dearness allowance is not provided to Research Associates.
• House Rent Allowance (HRA): Research associates living in a hostel are not entitled to receive a House Rent allowance. This allowance is only paid to the candidates who are not having a hostel facility. The rate is 9 to 27% depending on the city in which you are working.
• Medical Benefits: These are provided to the research associates as per the regulations of the institute.
• Leave and other entitlements: The RA is eligible for 30 days ‘with stipend leaves’. Any leave exceeding this limit of 30 leaves is considered to be without stipend leave.
• Maternity leave: Female RA can avail of 180 days leave on grounds of maternity. Such leave shall be sanctioned by the Guide/ supervisor via intimation to UGC.
• Paternity leaves: These are available to the male research Associates. These are for 15 days and need to be granted only after having documentary proof

Disney Research as part of Walt Disney Imagineering works actively in the field of AI and human computer interaction with focus on character interactions and storytelling. Our goal is to design natural interactions that are immersive by leveraging the latest in speech, vision and language technologies.

The goal of our current project is to identify methods for incorporating additional context information in our multimodal perception engines using the latest in the field of large language models (LLMs). Our work environment is fast-paced and prototype-driven: we are constantly looking for the thing we can build that will give us the most insight into our biggest unknowns.

What You Will Do

• Perform experiments to benchmark the accuracy and latency of different models.
• Helping with implementation of the algorithms in a real-time inference system
• Identify additional research papers and models to investigate and align with project goals
• Engage in team brainstorms and troubleshooting

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Python/ C++ experience for quick prototyping of algorithms
• Exposure to popular DL model finetuning and inference methods for large-language models (LLMs).
• Comfortable with PyTorch or other deep learning libraries for training/ finetuning models using open-source code.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience building streaming inference systems using pretrained models.
• Familiarity with audio self-supervised models and decoding using popular ASR architecture e.g. whisper,.wav2vec2 or Parakeet
• Familiarity with vision and language foundation models
• Experience with large language models
• Working towards a master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field.

• Be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months at time of application posting OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Internship
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Possess unrestricted work authorization
• Have not completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or Disney College Program

• The approximate dates of this internship are May/June 2024 through August/September 2024
• Able to provide own housing for the duration internship program in the Glendale, CA area
• Able to provide/have reliable transportation to/from work

CRA II/ Senior CRA

In this role, you will be part of our Strategic Solutions Division and be directly partnering with one of our top pharmaceutical sponsors with the support of ICON right behind you.

CURRENT VACANCY:

This is an unique opportunity to join an exciting embedded sponsor team as a CRAII or as a Senior CRA in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane. The CRA/ Senior CRA will assist to fullfill monitoring and site management activities and obligations in relation to clinical studies within a board range of therapeutic areas (except Oncology) and Phases.  

Key Responsibilities:

• Be involved in a range of clinical activities from study start through to close out
• Ensure that all activities are in compliance with SOP, ICH-GCP, local and global laws, regulations and guidelines
• Ensure all business is conducted professionally in compliance with company policies and procedures
• Liaise with internal and external parties, locally and globally
• Build and maintain solid and long-term professional relationships with investigators and site staff
• Mentor new CRAs, as needed
• The sponsor provides a wealth of support and a nurturing environment

Experience Required

• Ideally you will be based in Melbourne
• You will have a minimum of 4 years of independent monitoring experience in Australia or New Zealand
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be part of the social culture

Role summary.

Provide administrative support to clinical projects under direction of line manager and/or other designated clinical team members. Assists with general administrative functions as required.

Responsibilities

• Assist Clinical Research Associates (CRAs)/In-house Clinical Research Associate (iCRA) and Regulatory and Start-Up (RSU) with accurately updating and maintaining clinical systems that track site compliance and performance within project timelines.
• Assist the clinical team in the preparation, handling, distribution, filing, and archiving of clinical documentation and reports according to the scope of work and standard operating procedures. Assist with periodic review of study files for completeness.
• Assist CRAs/iCRAs and RSU with preparation, handling and distribution of Clinical Trial Supplies and maintenance of tracking information.
• Assist with the tracking and management of Case Report Forms (CRFs), queries and clinical data flow.
• Act as a central contact for the clinical team for designated project communications, correspondence and associated documentation.
• May accompany CRAs on site visits to assist with clinical monitoring duties upon completion of required training and with required approval.
• May perform assigned administrative tasks to support team members with clinical trial execution.

Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of experience. Less that than 2 years experience and student interns will be considered.

Requires basic job knowledge of systems and procedures obtained through prior work experience or education.
