So you decided to spring for a 3D-capable HDTV. Now what? Here are four sources for 3D content, both streaming and Blu-ray.

Here's a happy fact: 3D-capable HDTVs now cost little more than their non-3D counterparts.

Here's another happy fact: 3D-capable Blu-ray players now cost little more than their non-3D counterparts.

And, finally, a sad fact: You can't rent 3D movies from Netflix. Or your local Redbox kiosk. Nor can you stream or download them from Amazon, Netflix, or iTunes.

So now what? What good is the gear if there's no content? Turns out there are a few sources that can deliver 3D goodness to your home, either through the mail or over the Interwebs. Here are your options:

3D-BlurayRental.com

If there's a movie that's been released on 3D Blu-ray, chances are good 3D-BlurayRental.com will have it. This movies-by-mail service charges between $4.99 and $7.99 for most rentals, two-way postage included. After you receive your disc, you have seven days to watch the movie. If it's not postmarked by that seventh day, the service will charge an extra $2 per day until you send it back.

Until Netflix and/or Redbox get their 3D act together, this is arguably the best and most affordable way to obtain 3D Blu-ray movies.

Comcast Xfinity 3D If you're a Comcast HD subscriber and you have a current set-top box, check your on-demand options. I found about two dozen recent 3D releases available for rental, including "Captain America," "Hugo," "Happy Feet 2," and "Immortals." Each one will cost you $6.99. (Comcast also offers a few channels that provide 24/7 3D content, including ESPN 3D.)

Sony PlayStation Network The Sony PlayStation 3 might just be the ultimate 3D-TV companion. It's not only a 3D-capable Blu-ray player, but also a movie streamer that can pull content from both Sony's library (which includes a smattering of 3D movies and games) and Vudu (see below).

I don't own a PS3, so I don't have pricing or selection info. (E-mails to Sony's PR department went unanswered.) If you're a PS3 user, perhaps you can share some details in the comments.

Vudu This Wal-Mart-owned movie-streaming service has yet to really catch on against the likes of Amazon and Netflix, but it currently has one of the largest 3D-movie catalogs anywhere -- an impressive 50 titles at last count.

Unfortunately, many of the titles are available only for purchase, with prices typically set at $21.99. And a lot of the best 3D flicks aren't there, including "Despicable Me" and "Hugo."

For my money, the smart way to enjoy 3D at home is to rent or buy 3D Blu-ray discs. That affords you not only the best picture and sound quality, but also the widest selection.

Although 3D movies have sadly been on a decline in the last decade, could it be virtual reality that resurrects them?

Virtual Reality and especially the standalone Oculus Quest and Quest 2 headsets provide a convenient way you can watch 3D movies using various streaming services (e.g. BigScreen, FandangoNOW) or from local storage.

I personally thoroughly enjoy watching 3D movies on my Oculus Quest headset and I know there are many who agree with me. Seeing you reading this article, chances are that you are one of them.

But where can you get good quality 3D movies to play on your VR headset? In this article, I am listing different methods for doing exactly that! Let does dig in!

1) Bigscreen – The Easiest Way to Watch 3D Movies on Oculus Quest 2 & Quest

Bigscreen is a social VR movie theater where you can enjoy a virtual movie session with your friends & family or other cinema fans from around the world. Each Friday a set of 4 movies is released that you can choose from (which also includes 3D titles).

To watch a movie, you must first purchase a ticket (3-5$), which is then valid for 48 hours. You can either join a public session or watch the movie privately. With a private session, you can also invite your friends and family to join you (they must also purchase tickets).

Edit (March 2021) : Bigscreen now has a selection of on-demand movies (including 3D titles) where you can rent a movie and additionally control the playback (pause, scroll, etc). The prices start at 3.99$ and you can watch the movie during a 48h timeframe.

2) FandangoNOW

FandangoNOW is a US-based virtual video store that gives you access to more than 100000 movies and TV shows at home and on the go. Do notice, however, that only a small portion of the selection is 3D content (100+ titles).

With FandangoNOW you can either buy the movies or rent them for a period at a cheaper price. There is also the possibility to download your purchased titles for offline viewing.

One of the shortcomings for the platform currently is the fact that it is built upon the Oculus TV app, which has a relatively small virtual screen. This takes away from the immersion.

To overcome the problem, you could download the title and watch it locally (via Skybox VR Player for example). Another way would be to open FandangoNOW in the browser (instead of the dedicated app) and stream the content to your headset ( Virtual Desktop , Bigscreen Desktop ).

3) Youtube – Selection of Free 3D Movies & Clips to watch in VR

You can find quite a large selection of 360 degree and 3D movies from Youtube. Yes, there aren`t any full-length commercial movies, but you are bound to find some interesting short movies, nature clips, etc.

To find some interesting good-quality material, I recommend you to do a search with similar filters as in the image below. This will get rid of most wrong format/low-quality videos

You can also find some interesting collections from Reddit, such as r/3sixD and this one . You are bound to find more, if you do some googling (e.g “youtube best 360 videos reddit”).

4) Purchase Blu-ray 3D Movies

One way to watch 3D movies in VR is to purchase the desired 3D Blu-ray movie titles. You can find a large selection of Blu-ray 3D movies from Amazon , for example.

However, to play the Blu-ray discs, you also need a 3D-compatible Blu-ray player. If you do not have one at home, this again means additional expenses which you may or may not want to take. ( check prices here )

Granted that you have a 3D Blu-ray movie title and a compatible player to run it, there are two ways you can watch the content in your VR headset.

4.1) Play 3D Movies With PC and stream the content to VR headset (Virtual Desktop)

The first option requires that you are able to play the Blu-Ray with your PC in raw Side-by-Side (SBS) or Over-under (OU) mode. This can be achieved using VLC Player, for example. You can read about VLC and some of the other options to play 3D Blu-rays on your PC here .

Once you are correctly able to play the Blu-ray file in your PC, you can use Bigscreen or Virtual Desktop to mirror the movie player to your VR headset. Be sure to choose SBS or OU from the settings, according to your movie file to view the content correctly in your headset.

4.2) Ripping Your 3D Blu-Rays

The second option to watch Blu-ray content in your VR headset is to rip the movies. What this essentially means is that you are going to create a digital copy of the Blu-ray disc.

The end result is a regular movie file you can play from your computer or any other device (your Oculus Quest or Quest 2 for example). You can find a complete step-by-step manual about ripping Blu-rays here .

Once you have ripped your movie, there are several ways you can play it on your headset. You can use Skybox VR Player to play it locally (or over network) or use Bigscreen/Virtual Desktop to mirror your PC screen into your VR headset. Legal Disclaimer: Although you are essentially creating a copy of a Blu-ray disc you have legally purchased (for your personal use), due to legislation quirks, it is considered illegal and can be punished by law in most countries.

5) Use Torrents to Download 3D Movies For Oculus Quest & Quest 2

To be honest, it is a bit of an absurd situation. There really aren`t many ways for you to watch 3D movies legally and pay for the work that people have done.

I have listed some methods above. However, the problem with BigScreen and FandangoNOW is that the choice of movies is too narrow. Purchasing your own Blu-rays and getting them to play on VR Headset also borders on the edges of legislation (because the optimal way is ripping).

That leaves us with certain websites where you can download pretty much any 3D movie that is available (or at least the more popular ones). But it is illegal and you are breaking copyright laws.

Therefore, I am not listing any websites, nor am I recommending you to download illegal material. You should not. For the purpose of this article, I am just listing it as a theoretical option that could be used to watch 3D movies.

6) 3Dmoviesonline.com – Free Online 3D Movies Stream*

* Illegally released pirated 3D movies . Proceed at your own risk.

3DMoviesOnline.com provides quite a large selection of mainstream 3D movies that you can watch straight from the Oculus Browser. However, similar to torrenting, watching these movies is considered illegal in most countries and you risk getting in trouble with the law.

For this reason, I suggest that you use the legal options listed earlier in the article.

In this tutorial, we'll cover how you can download your favorite videos using three approaches:

Paying for YouTube Premium
Using a free Mac, Windows, or Linux application
Using an obscure and complex (yet very powerful) Linux command line tool

Your free option (and my preferred way) to download YouTube videos: ClipGrab

I have to give ZDNET's managing editor props for introducing me to this program a few years ago. I've been using it ever since.

ClipGrab is a free program available for Mac, Windows, and Linux users. The developer says it's open source, but the source code is only available for Linux. In any case, ClipGrab rocks. Here's how to download and use it.

1. Go to ClipGrab.org

Point your browser to ClipGrab.org and click the Show All Download Options link. You'll see download links for Mac, Windows, and Linux there. I'll show you the Mac version in this article, but the interface is virtually identical on all three.

2. Copy the YouTube video link

Copy the video link of the YouTube video(s) you wish to download. You can do this up in your browser's URL bar or by clicking the Share button under the video itself.

3. Launch ClipGrab

Make sure that you're on the Downloads tab and then choose the Launch ClipGrab option.

4. Copy and Paste

Copy and paste the URL of the video you want to download into ClickGrab.

5. Click Grab this clip!

Once you've copied and pasted the desired video link into the ClickGrab browser, select Grab this clip!

Put one link of a video at a time into the top Downloads tab browser on ClickGrab. Once you're ready to download, select Grab this clip!

6. Choose the video format

On ClickGrab, you can also tweak options.

For example, you can choose the format you want the video to be in when it's stored on your computer. I generally go with Original, but I'll specify something else if that doesn't work.

You can also select download resolution. Depending on the video's original resolution, you can choose to download the full resolution video or reduce the resolution to save space.

7. Customize

Finally, tapping the Settings tab lets you customize where ClipGrab deposits your newly downloaded videos.

Another free option (with some added-cost benefits)

ClipGrab remains my choice for easy, no-muss, no-fuss YouTube downloading. But if you want a YouTube downloader that can be upgraded into an entire power-user suite for video format conversion and management, look no further than the WinX/MacX pair of applications.

Produced by Digiarty Software -- better known by its DVD ripper software brand, WinXDVD -- WinX Video Converter (for Windows) and MacX Video Converter (for Mac) are freemium video conversion power tools. The paid-for version of these tools converts any video to MP4, HEVC, H.264, MOV, MKV, AVI, MP3, iPhone, and Android from a wide range of specialty formats. That's where the five-minute limit exists in the trial. But if you download the trial, you can download from YouTube (and also from all of these sites, see image below), for free. The only cost is putting up with a few upsell dialogs while you do so.

If you do choose to upgrade to the paid-for versions, you'll get a power-user version that compresses videos, allows you to trim videos, and allows you to add and edit subtitles. Those paid-for products range from $19.95 to $149.95, depending on the options and number of users you choose.

Your paid option: YouTube Premium

I'm a big fan of YouTube Premium because it saves my wife and me from enduring most ads , but it is a luxury expense. Individuals can subscribe to YouTube Premium for $13.99 a month (that's up $2 from what it was a few months ago). YouTube also offers a family plan for up to six users for $22.99 a month. Finally, students can subscribe to YouTube Premium for $7.99 a month (up a buck from what it was a few months ago).

My favorite feature is a complete lack of Google-provided ads. There are no banners, no pre-roll, and no interstitial ads. However, if a YouTube channel wants to embed an ad in a video, YouTube Premium will not filter those YouTuber-embedded ads.

YouTube Premium provides background play and picture-in-picture, YouTube Music, and access to YouTube Originals.

YouTube Premium also includes the ability to download videos . Here's how you do it.

How to download YouTube videos via YouTube Premium

1. log in to your youtube premium account.

Once you've subscribed to YouTube Premium, you'll have a Download button in your web browser or your phone app to the right of the Share (arrow) icon at the bottom of a video.

2. Toggle the Download icon

Select the video(s) you want to download, and once it comes up in the main screen display, click the Download icon.

3. Find your downloads

You can find your downloads in the Downloads area of YouTube. Notice that YouTube says that the downloads are retained as long as you have an internet connection at least once every 30 days. That way, YouTube can confirm you are still a YouTube Premium user.

Saving once downloaded

You're not given an easy way to turn that download into a usable video file on a desktop device, so if you want to use that video for anything other than watching offline, you're somewhat out of luck. The same is true of iOS.

However, if you're an Android user with an SD card slot in your phone, you can set the YouTube app settings (tap your profile picture, then Settings , then Downloads ) to save videos to your SD card.

So, that's how to download videos into an only barely usable form for the low-low price of $13.99 per month. That price went up by two bucks a month, a few months ago. Because, well, streaming prices are on the rise. Special.

Linux command line options

I would be remiss (or so I've been told in the comments below, on Twitter, and in my email inbox) if I didn't mention that Linux users have a command line option (because, of course they do) to download YouTube videos. As with all-things Linux command line, there are some gray areas here, such as whether the tool even works or whether there's a better tool.

The first option in this command line hit parade is youtube-dl. You can get access to it via its own site , on GitHub , or your favorite package manager.

It should be noted that the GitHub repository was taken down for a while due to an allegation of DMCA violations, but GitHub later reinstated it. You can read a very interesting story about GitHub's reasoning and response.

Some folks claim that youtube-dl is old hat and hasn't been updated in a while. There's another open-source project on GitHub, called yt-dlp , that claims to be a fork of youtube-dl with more features. I haven't tested it, so use it at your own risk.

Both youtube-dl and yt-dlp offer a very, very wide range of features if you need them. Personally, I'm going to stick with ClipGrab, because I don't have time to turn YouTube downloading into a second or third full-time job. But it's up to you.

I regularly get notes via email and socials from readers who want to use other tools. The typical story is either they saw an ad for the best downloader ever, or they have a friend/cousin/neighbor who "knows about computers" and recommended a specific tool.

I also fairly constantly get pitches from vendors who also have video downloaders. Because the core tech for video downloading is available as an open-source library, and because people tend to want to download protected videos, the video downloading software business is a bit of a cesspool of opportunistic and potentially unscrupulous vendors.

Downloading otherwise protected videos is one of those gray-area categories where scammers like to play. I generally recommend you stick with the above recommendations because we've tried them, used them, and haven't experienced any negative issues.

But if you do want to follow another suggestion, keep your Spidey sense on high alert. If you land on a site with a ton of ads and popups, if it seems like there are multiple attempts to monetize the offerings, or if you're asked to give up your credit card digits, stay away.

Just... be careful.

What happened to SaveFrom.net?

Some of you might be familiar with SaveFrom.net. This site allowed you to download from YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion (and a few other sites), merely by pasting a URL into a web page on the site. It also had a browser extension that facilitated downloads. But, highlighting the topic in our next section, SaveFrom.net has shut down its operations in the US and UK, providing this message from the UK (and an equivalent in the US):

Now that you know how to download YouTube videos, should you? First, do be aware that different jurisdictions have different laws. It may or may not be legal to download a given video, even if all you want to do is watch it offline.

If you want to download a video to incorporate it into something you're producing, keep in mind that some countries have the concept of Fair Use. In those jurisdictions, small clips of copyrighted media can be incorporated into your productions. But you should also remember that YouTube has algorithmic systems looking for people reusing videos, and your channel might get a strike against it for reusing media.
