Around 47 percent of U.S. public school teachers hold a master’s degree.  According to the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), teachers with a master’s degree earn an average of $8,411 more each year . They offer a number of grants and scholarships, among them are the Ruth Halvorsen Professional Development Grants, Mary McMullan Grants, NAEF Research Grants, SHIP Grants, and Teacher Incentive Grants. Haig and Janette Tashjian Art Teaching Scholarship

Available from the Western Michigan University, this scholarship is in recognition of excellence for art students who are in financial need - students will need to demonstrate this through the application process. The dollar value of the award varies, and it rotates between schools every second year. The award is limited to students who intend to go on to a career in teaching. You must be studying an art major for this, be in your junior or senior year, and must be nominated by the faculty. UMW Mary Baker Emerick Art Scholarships

This award from The University of Montana Western is for students of art. It is a fund set up in honor of Mary Baker Emerick and available only to female students who intend to study for a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education while choosing art as their major. Alternatively, they can be studying a degree in Visual Arts with a focus or minors in art and crafts business and art therapy. College Educator Scholarships

In order to become a lecturer/professor at a college or university, you are going to need an advanced degree. In some cases, a Master's Degree will do, but increasingly, Doctorates are required for teaching and research roles. Here are just some of the funding programs you may use to fund your path towards a career as a college professor.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid should be the first port of call for most students, but especially those looking to go onto post-graduate study. American colleges and universities will always need university level teachers and lecturers. The great thing about FAFSA is that there are very few restrictions to the program - each applicant is considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must be a US citizen, an eligible non-citizen (such as a permanent resident), and have a valid Social Security number. Fulbright Scholar Program

Fulbright offers a number of grants and scholarships to undergraduates and graduate students, with a particular focus on early career research, lecturing and funding the first post-doctoral research that would be vital to your college teaching career. In this case, you already need to have completed your doctoral degree - you cannot apply while you are still a student. They offer several funding paths: some are available only to women and ethnic minorities for example, and most are field-flexible meaning you can apply from almost any discipline. Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The HSF presently offers access to two separate scholarship programs. Their general program, which has run for many years, is available for people of Hispanic ethnicity from underprivileged backgrounds. It is not just for high school students looking to enter college, but also existing undergraduate and postgraduate students looking to further their studies and research - this includes doctorates with a view to carry on into teaching and researching at college. The value of the fund ranges from $500 to $5,000. You have a higher chance of acceptance if you are studying a STEM subject.

Requirements include:

• Minimum 3.0 GPA for High School Students
• Minimum 2.5GPA for college students (undergraduate and postgraduate).

AICPA Fellowship

There is considered to be a lack of ethnic minorities in the accounting field. With that said, the AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students focuses on increasing representation in the teaching of accounting and other financial subjects. This fellowship is available to ethnic minorities who are presently studying for a doctorate in finance and intend to devote their studies towards teaching the subject to others. You do not need to have gained acceptance onto a doctoral program. Applicants can also be awaiting a decision from a college. American Society of Mechanical Engineers

The ASME Fellowship seeks to address the critical shortage of engineers. ASME have set up this fund in an attempt to encourage the brightest and best young people (who might have otherwise felt hindered by costs) to apply to an essential field. Anyone can apply, but the selection process generally favors women and ethnic minorities. However, that's not to say you will receive automatic refusal for not being part of this demographic. The fund is available for those who intend to pursue engineering education as a career, so college professorships are ideal. Award value is $5,000. NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship

This education development fellowship seeks to improve education standards across all disciplines within our schools. With a value of $27,500, the fellowship is available to anyone who has proposed a research dissertation on how to improve education standards in the US. It is a highly competitive fellowship, with just 35 granted each year to an expected 600+ applicants. Applicants need not be US citizens, but should be candidates for a doctoral program at a US university. They need to have demonstrable experience of researching standards in education. Edwyna Wheadon Training Scholarship Fund

It can be difficult to get funding for a postgraduate course, and teaching English is no exception. For those who wish to advance in their career to study a master's or other post-grad course, the EWTSF offers $500-1,000 annually to one applicant. Set up in honor of a woman who did much in her career to encourage advanced training for English teachers in her native Houston. The money goes directly to the institution. You must already be an English teacher at a publicly funded education establishment in order to apply and be a member of the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). High School Teacher Scholarships

High school teaching is one of the most essential careers that anybody coming out of the college system can consider. Most roles require only an undergraduate degree, but if you wish to further your career with a higher pay scale and more responsibility, you should consider further study. Federal TEACH Grant

Though not limited to high school teaching, these federal grants and scholarships are available to undergraduates, graduate students, and those in post-baccalaureate programs associated with teaching. You must check that the program you are already on is eligible as a TEACH course or you may not be able to apply. It is worth up to $4,000 per year for each individual student with some adjustments made in the next few years. You are also bound by a number of conditions to teach in deprived schools, or in a high needs field for at least four of the eight years after receiving your grant. NILRR Applegate-Jackson-Parks Future Teacher Scholarship

Set up in honor of three Michigan teachers who refused to pay union fees (and were consequently fired for refusing to do so), this scholarship is for both undergraduates and graduates who have pursued or are pursuing a degree in education at an accredited and publicly funded institution. Approval is dependent on the applicant having a teaching license, or pending acceptance of said license. You will be expected to write a mini essay on the subject of voluntary unionism and the problems of compulsory unionism. The fund will go directly to the education establishment upon approval. James Madison Graduate Fellowship

It's important that High School students understand the importance of the US Constitution, its history and context, its meaning, and why it is so important to the country's laws.

The James Madison Graduate Fellowship is a fund set up in honor of the fourth president for people who wish to teach about the Constitution in our high schools. It has a value of $24,000 and is limited to one person, per state, per year. Therefore, the only competition you will have will be other people in your state applying for the fund. Minority Teaching Fellows

This Tennessee specific fund is for ethnic minorities in the state who are an eligible US citizen or permanent resident and who wishes to pursue a career in post-secondary education. It is for a flat $5000 fund going to a single selected candidate every year. Applicants will be required to write a statement titled "Why I chose teaching as a profession" with a limit of 250 words along with a number of other selection criteria. Kindergarten Teacher Scholarships

Not limited to teaching kids with special needs, extra consideration is given to those students at undergraduate and graduate level who intend to teach children and young adults with special education needs. The grant is worth up to $4,000 every year and special conditions are placed on recipients such as that they are contractually bound to teach in a US school for a certain number of years (usually in a socially deprived area). Indiana Minority Teacher/Special Services Scholarship

Available only to minority students living in the state of Indiana, applicants must already have applied for FAFSA to be eligible, and the commission must receive a copy of this. The IB has partnered with the University of the People (UoPeople) to award scholarships for educators around the globe to earn a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree.

These scholarships represent a collaborative effort and commitment to address the global shortage of quality educators worldwide, which in turn guarantees access to quality education for more students.

We are proud to support inspiring educators and help them reach the next stage in their careers, especially those who demonstrate a strong commitment to their own local communities, to lifelong learning and the IB pedagogy.

Who should apply?

The IB UoPeople Scholarship aims to support new or developing educators who have never received a master’s degree in any field and do not have access to affordable teacher education. Our scholarship recipients will receive funding for all 13 courses assessment fees and the application fee required by UoPeople to complete the M.Ed. degree.

What is required for the letter of recommendation?

Letters of recommendation should be from a previous or current supervisor and should be signed and include the contact information of the recommender. What is the UoPeople Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree?

The tuition-free online Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree is available to applicants worldwide. Successful students will receive a Master of Education in Advanced Teaching with specializations at two levels: the primary and middle school level, and the secondary school level. Both specializations share nine core courses and one capstone course, but each have two of their own specialized core courses as well as one elective. Students are required to complete 13 courses, which includes core courses and electives. In addition, students also complete a capstone project—or complete a six-credit internship at an IB World School—and a final applied research project.

The IB is providing a funding contribution to support the development and launch of the M.Ed. degree opportunity and will work with IB World Schools to facilitate internships and raise awareness of the degree. What are the criteria for acceptance to pursue the M.Ed. degree?

Applicants from any undergraduate major or employment field—with a bachelor’s degree and the required level of English language proficiency—are considered for admission. Students must first complete at least three M.Ed. core courses as a non-degree seeking student (NDSS) and earn a grade of 2.67 or higher in each course in order to be accepted.

Is the M.Ed. degree accredited and internationally recognized?

UoPeople is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an accrediting agency. The M.Ed. degree has received accreditation in the U.S. and does not award a teaching certification.

How long does the degree take to complete?

The Harvard Graduate School of Education offers the Master's in Education (Ed.M.) degree in two formats —  residential and online — and in a variety of programs.

Residential Master's

HGSE’s  on-campus master’s degree is a one-year, full-time, immersive Harvard experience. You'll apply directly to one of its five distinct programs, spanning education leadership and entrepreneurship, education policy, human development, teaching and teacher leadership, and learning design and technology. 

Online Master's

Our Online Master's in Education  is a part-time, two-year, online program in education leadership. It is designed for experienced professionals who want to advance in their careers and deepen their impact. The online program in education leadership offers a choice of two pathways, preK–12 or higher education, that complement your career and chosen area of impact.

The International Baccalaureate M.Ed. Scholarship

How to win scholarships for graduate students

As someone who has already gone through the process of earning your undergraduate degree, you probably have some experience with applying for scholarships. However, students applying for graduate scholarships would do well to emphasize a few different points to help ensure successful applications.

Graduate students typically have a more specific idea of their future career goals than undergraduate students. Make sure to emphasize this in your application and include all the particular things you hope to accomplish. If you have gained work experience between undergraduate and graduate school, frame your pursuits in this context. The more you demonstrate that you are working towards the plans you hope to further with your graduate degree, the more impactful your applications will be.

Writing strong applications

While your circumstances may have changed since undergraduate, the principles of writing a strong essay haven’t! We have a whole host of guides for writing strong scholarship essays and applications. Graduate school funding sources

Students will generally pay for graduate school using a few different funding sources. The most common sources are private scholarships, need-based financial aid and grants, and university-specific scholarships.

Private graduate school scholarships

There some great private organizations that offer scholarships for students pursuing their masters or doctoral degrees! These scholarships support graduate students of all stripes including medical school students, law school students, business school students, masters students, and doctoral students!

Need-based financial aid for grad school

Need-based financial aid is another important way to pay for graduate school. For graduate school, need-based aid can include both grants (that don’t need to be repaid) and student loans (that do need to be repaid).

For need-based graduate school financial aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA . This allows students to be considered for both need-based grants and federal student loans. Some colleges may also require additional forms, so always check with your specific graduate program for more details about their financial aid process.

We select students for scholarships based on several factors, including the amount of funds available to award each year and the number of students deemed eligible to receive our support.

When making funding decisions, our scholarship review committee considers students’ demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid, academic merit as determined by the program, and/or a combination of both.

Marsal Education endeavors to help sustain the academic excellence of the Michigan graduate community, and as such, considers students for scholarships who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations for our scholarship support. By commitment to diversity, we mean efforts to reduce social, educational or economic disparities among race, ethnicity or gender, or efforts to improve race relations in the U.S.

Educator Preparation Program (EPP) scholarship offers For the 2023–24 academic year, Marsal Education offered scholarships to 100% of students admitted to the Master of Arts with Elementary Teacher Certification and Master of Arts with Secondary Teacher Certification programs. In-state students were offered a minimum scholarship of $12,000, and out-of-state students were offered a minimum scholarship of $15,000.

City Year community members—including currently serving corps members, senior corps members, alumni who have completed a term of AmeriCorps service, and staff members who have been employed for at least two years—are eligible to receive a scholarship up to 25% of tuition.

Students who elect to pursue an English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement will receive a $3,000 scholarship to help cover the tuition costs of the endorsement.

In addition to the scholarships we offer our master’s students, we collaborate on funding packages with Rackham Graduate School. These scholarships, called Rackham Merit Awards (RMAs), assist eligible master’s students with support consisting of tuition, health and dental insurance, and a stipend.

Students do not formally apply for the RMA or any of the scholarships offered by Marsal Education. You will automatically be considered. Marsal Education provides RMAs to 2–6 students per program each academic year. 

Fellowship The State of Michigan’s MI Future Educators Fellowship offers a $10,000 scholarship to up to 2,500 future educators every year for Michigan residents. For additional eligibility requirements and to apply visit MI Student Aid . 

Stipend The State of Michigan’s Future Educators Stipend is a $9,600 stipend to support Michigan’s hardworking student teachers as they continue their journey to begin in the classroom full-time. So you’ve made the decision to go to grad school. You’ve weighed your options , researched the benefits of a graduate education , and discovered the value of having an advanced degree . Now it’s time to choose which program to pursue—a task that can seem overwhelming given the number of options available.

But the process doesn’t have to be so daunting. There are actions you can take to make choosing a graduate degree program more manageable—exciting, even. As you take the next step toward your personal and professional goals, take note of the following tips to help you choose a graduate school and degree program best suited for you.

Difference Between Grad School and Undergrad Programs

Before you start searching for the right graduate school for you, it’s essential to know what to expect for this new career trajectory you’ll be embarking on. Unlike an undergraduate program, grad programs are highly specialized and much more advanced in your field of study.

Prospective graduate students can expect a far more individualized experience as they work closely with students and professors. Due to this specialization, entering a graduate program will be an investment of time that’ll ultimately help elevate your expertise and career choices.

Tips for Choosing a Graduate School

1. Take inventory of your passions and motivations.

Pursuing a graduate education is a big investment, so it’s critical to understand the unique “ why ” behind your decision. What do you hope to achieve by going back to school? Whether you’d like to gain more specialized knowledge, change careers, earn a promotion, increase your salary potential, or achieve a lifelong personal goal, make sure the program you choose will help get you there.

Examine the curricula and course descriptions of various degree programs, and assess how each offering aligns with your passions and interests. Graduate school is challenging, but it will feel more manageable if you’re working toward something that matters to you. Understanding your expectations and what you want to get out of the program is the first step in choosing a degree that will be a good fit.

2. Do your research and explore your options.

Once you’ve determined your motivations for returning to school, leave yourself time to research the types of degree programs available in your preferred area of study and the opportunities each can create.

Resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook can give you a sense of typical career paths by industry, along with the educational degree requirements for each. The handbook also provides market growth forecasts and earning potential to help inform your decision.

It’s also important to note the structure and focus of each program. Even in the same discipline, a program’s focus can vary among institutions. Does the curriculum emphasize theory, original research, or a more practical application of knowledge? Whatever your goals may be, make sure the program’s focus aligns with the educational experience that will provide you with the most value. Career changers, for example, who likely don’t have industry experience, might prefer a program with access to hands-on learning opportunities or a path for completing prerequisites like Northeastern’s Align and Bridge programs.

While conducting your research, don’t be afraid to utilize your professional network. Speak with colleagues who have pursued an advanced degree in your industry and reach out to alumni of the institutions you’re considering. Listening to their experiences as a graduate student and in the job market post-degree can help you gauge if the program is in line with your goals.

3. Keep your career goals in mind.

After exploring your range of program options, consider your career goals and how each specific graduate program can help you get there.

If you’re seeking a specialized area of focus, be sure to examine the program concentrations offered at each institution. One graduate program in education might prepare you to specialize in higher education administration or elementary instruction, while other institutions may offer concentrations in special education or classroom technology. Make sure the program you choose reflects your career interests.

Alternatively, if you’re unsure of exactly where your career path may take you, you may want to consider a broader degree that can give you flexibility in its application. Some degree programs, such as a Master of Business Administration , teach skills that can be applied across multiple professions. If this is the path you’d prefer to pursue, pick a degree that will remain relevant as you move around in your career.

Examine the types of credentials professionals in the industry possess and research the types of skills potential employers are looking for. Check to see that the degree program offers opportunities to learn and develop those same skills. You’ll want to make sure the program you’re investing your time in will arm you with the knowledge you can actually apply in the real world.

Some professions also require board certification and/or state licensure. For example, someone interested in becoming a ​​project manager must complete 35 hours of relevant training before gaining eligibility to sit for the certification exam. You’ll want to ensure that the graduate program you ultimately decide on is fully accredited and will help you meet any certification or licensure requirements.

Location is also an important factor to consider when thinking about potential employment opportunities after graduation. Individuals interested in financial services may consider schools in a major banking center, such as Charlotte , while those pursuing a technology career might look for programs in Silicon Valley .

Further, if your goal is to work for a specific company, do your research to determine where graduates of the programs you’re looking at are working. Universities often have corporate partnerships in which employers recruit graduates to work at their organization. Check to see if your dream company partners with any nearby universities.

4. Make sure the program fits your lifestyle.

While aligning your career goals, make sure the degree program you choose will realistically fit within your lifestyle, and determine what level of flexibility you need. There are many options available that will allow you to earn an advanced degree at the right pace and in the right format for you.

Some degrees can be earned in as little as 12 months, while others can take years. Determine how much time you’re willing to invest, considering your personal values, work and family commitments, and the type of graduate experience you’d like to have.

Full-time graduate studies are not for everyone. If you’re a working professional, you may benefit from the increased flexibility provided by a part-time degree program. You might also consider the benefits of online or hybrid graduate programs that provide access to worldwide institutions that may have otherwise not been an option.

5. Consider your finances.

• Are you happy with your professors?
• Are there co-op and internship opportunities available to you?
• How do you feel about the student community?
• What do you wish you knew before enrolling?

What students and alumni tell you might surprise you and could be extremely valuable in determining the right graduate school for you.

Speak With a Student Ambassador

 Talk to an ambassador who’s been there and done that.

You can also speak with graduate admissions advisors to help you narrow your options. They have experience guiding students to make this type of decision and can provide you with the outcomes of past students whose goals were similar to yours. In speaking with the institution’s alumni and mentor network, you also have the opportunity to assess the type of connections you can make there and how they may help you get ahead after graduation.

7. Network with faculty.

Faculty can make or break your graduate school experience. Take the time to reach out to your potential professors and get to know them. Don’t be afraid to ask specific questions about their background to see if it aligns with what you want to learn.

Apply to universities that have one or more professors who focus on your area of interest and with whom you can imagine collaborating while earning your degree. Determine if they can help facilitate your growth, and go with a program where you’re comfortable with the faculty.

Applying to Graduate School

While the application requirements may look different depending on the institution and type of degree program you’re applying to, there are certain materials that you’ll likely be asked for as part of your grad school application. These include:

• A well-optimized professional resumé

Educational Possibilities: UH Researchers to Present Findings at AERA 2024 Conference

Posted April 4, 2024 — More than three dozen researchers from the University of Houston College of Education will share their scholarship on teacher development, STEM education, college culture and other initiatives to support marginalized students at the 2024 American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting.

The high-profile conference, taking place April 11-14 in Philadelphia,  will bring together thousands of scholars around the theme of “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action.”

The UH presenters at AERA include faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Several presentations from faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction will focus on supporting multilingual students. For example, Assistant Professor Xin Li will share findings to promote socio-emotional development among language-minority youth. Assistant Professor Tairan Qiu, who organized a symposium on transnational literacies, will discuss approaches for humanizing qualitative research methodologies. And Clinical Assistant Professor Marédil León will present an analysis of Colombian textbooks to teach English.

To improve the preparation of teachers, Clinical Assistant Professor Bernadette Castillo and faculty from Minnesota State University will discuss insights gleaned from student-teachers.

“In this presentation,” she said, “you will learn about the tensions that emerged from teacher candidates’ perceptions of their experiences in a teacher education program with a vision and goal that embeds racial consciousness and social justice.”

Honing in on the college experience, Assistant Professor Allison Master and Paul Turcotte, a Ph.D. student in the Measurement, Quantitative Methods and Learning Sciences program, will present survey results assessing engagement throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“First-year students were particularly affected in 2021 but showed consistent signs of recent improvement in engagement and belonging in 2023,” they explained. “Overall, students’ engagement practices show promising recent signs of improving to pre-pandemic levels. However, all students showed significant disruptions to their educational belonging and engagement.”

Also presenting on higher education, Clinical Professor and Associate Dean Tiffany J. Davis will highlight “promising practices that institutions can use to help reduce equity gaps for Black first-generation college women.”

“Specifically,” she added, “we share the unique barriers our participants faced that impacted their collegiate experience due to their multiple minoritized identities, discuss the role of financial resources and mental health support in mitigating challenges, and articulate the significant difference the role of institutional interventions, such as the McNair Scholars Program, play in Black college women’s lives.”

Similarly, Teranda Donatto, a Ph.D. student in the higher education program, will share research on how culture and family characteristics shape African American students’ college choice.

“The findings highlight the influence of family members and school staff as well as the importance of the centrality of community, spirituality, the value of education, and agency to students’ decision-making,” said Donatto, a program director for the UH Advancing Community Engagement and Service Institute. “With these findings, educators can create pre-college programming that draws on African American family and culture as a strength in helping these students in overcoming barriers to college choice.”

If you've dreamed of attending college and are trying to figure out how to pay for your education, consider scholarships to help make your vision a reality . There’s no limit to the number of scholarships that you can apply for, and under most circumstances, this is money for college and graduate school that you won’t need to pay back.

While some people might operate under the assumption that you need to have a perfect grade point average (GPA) or be a star athlete to qualify for college and graduate school scholarships, there is a vast range of scholarships available for all kinds of applicants, all with different eligibility requirements.

In this article, we'll share a variety of scholarships available for Black women that have eligibility requirements that range from financial need to particular career aspirations. Keep reading to learn more.

Are there college and graduate school scholarships specifically for Black women?

There's a gamut of college and graduate school scholarships available to Black women, from school-provided scholarships to those offered by corporations, nonprofits, and other organizations. You can discover many of these opportunities through an online search, your guidance counselor, or even via word of mouth.

If you’re interested in applying for scholarships, you can get ahead of the process by researching scholarships and their eligibility requirements in advance and keeping track of the myriad of deadlines. Beyond applying to individual scholarships, you should consider filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ® ), which some scholarships utilize to award student's funds.

Is it worth applying for scholarships specific to Black women?

According to a 2022 report by the nonprofit Education Trust (PDF) , a year after completing their bachelor’s degree, Black women have an average of $38,800 in student loans, more than any other group analyzed in the report.

If we zoom out to all the federal student loans owed to the U.S. government, the same paper reports that women generally owe two-thirds of the student debt pie (PDF) .

While these statistics don’t reflect every Black woman’s story and won’t necessarily be yours, they do show how scholarships and grants for Black women may be helpful when it comes to paying for college and graduate school. Scholarships have the potential to reduce your higher education expenses and may help limit your student debt burden as you pursue higher education.

Scholarships for Black women pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees

There are a range of scholarships available to Black women. Here’s a small sampling of options to consider applying for, but many more are available.

Scholarships for Black women pursuing STEM and medicine degrees

Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology

The Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology, a nonprofit formed in 1983 by Black professionals in STEM across the country, gives away nearly $30,000 annually through their endowment fund to students.  

Take note, students who apply must be enrolled or have the intention to enroll in one of the approved 20 schools listed on the organization’s website. These schools range from Howard University to Spelman College.

• Amount: $3,000 per year (up to four years)
• GPA Requirement: 3.0
• ·Deadline: June 15, 2024 (application opens April 15, 2024)

Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship

The Dashanna K. McNeil Foundation, which honors nurse Dashanna K. McNeil, awards three recipients various cash prizes annually as they pursue an associate, bachelor’s, or master's in nursing or a related field. All applicants must complete an essay question based on their education level.

• Amount: Past recipients have received awards ranging from $400 to $2,000
• GPA requirement: Not listed
• Deadline: 2024 deadline is yet to be announced

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity

Graduate Fellows for STEM Diversity is an organization that assists scientists and engineers in pursuing a graduate-level education by providing fellowships and mentoring opportunities. According to the organization’s website, nearly 33% of their fellows are from underrepresented groups, and 61% of their fellows are female.

• Amount: $20,000
• GPA Requirement: Not listed
• Deadline: January 2025

Ford Motor Company Fund & NACME Scholarships 2024

The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, in conjunction with the Ford Motor Company, offers scholarships for minority students pursuing STEM-related careers in support of electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing industries.

• Amount: $5,000
• Deadline: July 8, 2024

Master of Business Administration (MBA) scholarships for Black women

The Consortium

The Consortium is a group of business schools with a shared mission to improve the representation of minority students in business schools, including Black women. Students can apply using The Consortium's application to a range of business schools, and through this process, The Consortium award hundreds of merit-based full-tuition fellowships.

Some requirements include having a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, believing in The Consortium's mission of improving the representation of minorities in management, and being a U.S. citizen or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient.

• Amount: Full tuition to 70% of applicants
• Deadline: 2025 deadline is yet to be announced

Selected Professions Fellowship

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) promotes the education of women and girls. Its Selected Professions Fellowship offers awards specifically to women of color who are pursuing an MBA, law degree, or medical degree.

• Deadline: November 30, 2024

Scholarships for Black women pursuing law degrees

The Herbert Lehman Education Fund Scholarship

The Herbert Lehman Education Fund Scholarship provides awards to undergraduate and law school students with financial need who plan on attending an accredited three-year law school full-time and have a solid academic record. The Legal Defense Fund sponsors the award, which promotes racial justice for Black Americans. Students must also demonstrate financial need. The award honors Herbert Lehman, a former governor and U.S. senator from New York who played a role in the civil rights movement.

• Amount: $3,000 a year (for four years)
• GPA Requirement: None
• Deadline: April 1, 2024

The Earl Warren Scholarship

The Legal Defense Fund also sponsors the Earl Warren Sponsorship. This award is in memoriam of the Honorable Earl Warren, the 14th United States Chief Justice, who helped end school segregation in the U.S. The scholarship welcomes rising law students who share a commitment to racial justice and have potential for training as civil rights and public interest attorneys.

• Amount: $45,000 ($15,000 per year for three years)
• Deadline: May 1, 2024

Scholarships for Black women pursuing careers in social work

The Laurel House Social Work Racial Equity Scholarship

The Laurel House is an organization that helps promote access to mental health care for people of color. Its Social Work Racial Equity Scholarship provides scholarships to students pursuing a graduate degree in social work. Students must be Connecticut residents, Black or Latino, and enrolled in a Master of Social Work program in Connecticut or New York. The candidate must also demonstrate they need financial aid and secure a letter of recommendation.

• Amount: $10,000 (first place), $1,000 (second place), $500 (third place)
• GPA requirement: None
• Deadline: May 15, 2024

Scholarships for Black women returning to college

Young Black Women Scholars Program

The Young Black Women Scholars Program provides priority consideration to women, including Black women, who are interested in completing their college degree. This can include women who've left college and are returning to complete their degree or those who are attending college for the first time.

• Amount: Varies
• GPA Requirement: 2.5
• Deadline: May 14, 2024

Additional scholarships for Black women 

If you're a Black woman who isn't necessarily studying STEM, law, or business, there are still organizations that want to aid in your higher education journey. Here's a list of other scholarships to consider applying for should you meet the eligibility requirements:

• Scholarship Institute's Annual Women's Leadership Scholarship

Final thoughts

Since filling out a scholarship application doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily receive the scholarship funds, you may want to consider applying for several scholarships each year. There are other routes to seek help to pay for college or graduate school, too.

Education | Bethlehem Area teens win full-tuition scholarships to Moravian University. Both dream of careers in public service

This year’s winners of the Bethlehem Area Superintendent’s Scholarship to Moravian University are two hardworking teens who want to help others through social work and nursing.

Natalie Cain, a Freedom High School student, and Milena Garay, a Liberty High School student, were chosen as the recipients of full-tuition, four-year scholarships to attend the private university, which was founded in 1742 and has roots in the Moravian Church.

The Superintendent’s Scholarship award is in its ninth year. A graduating senior from each of Bethlehem Area’s two high schools is selected each spring after submitting an essay and interviewing with the superintendent. They must also apply and gain admission to Moravian, where the annual tuition is $51,569 for the 2024-25 school year.

“As much as it’s a celebration of the accomplishments and futures of two students, I like to think of it as a celebration of two good, neighborly friends,” Superintendent Jack Silva said, noting BASD and Moravian University are part of the same community and are increasingly educating the same students.

Silva said this year’s winners were chosen for their strong academic records, dedication to public service and perseverance through adversity.

Natalie Cain, Freedom High School

Cain, 17, grew up in west Bethlehem, and said she’s excited to explore the city’s downtown as a college student, studying social work at Moravian next year.

“I know where things are so being able to experience them [being] older is just a whole different side, so I’m really excited,” she said after Thursday’s scholarship ceremony.

Cain, a senior at Freedom, attended Calypso Elementary School, Nitschmann Middle School and Liberty before transferring to her soon-to-be alma mater, Freedom, when her family moved in recent years.

She participated in choir and theater at Freedom and said her favorite BASD memories are centered around making friends.

Outside school, Cain works a part-time job and dances competitively at B.U Studios in Bethlehem, focusing on modern contemporary dance. She also volunteers at the studio, teaching students ages 3 to 5 the basics of dance.

“They’re so sweet,” Cain said. “I love all of them, and they’re my best friends.”

Cain’s mother, Carley Ufer, said her daughter has always been good with younger children, including her siblings.

“She’s very calm, patient with them, very understanding,” she said, adding Cain likes to watch the growth of the young dancers she teaches.

Cain said she wants to study social work in part because she has close friends who have experiences with the foster system, which she would like to focus on as a social worker.

Cain said she wants to be a “go-to person for younger kids.”

Cain’s father, Robert, said his daughter is aware of the sometimes harsh realities a career in social work may present because of his own experiences in public service.

“We see the rough side of humanity sometimes,” Robert Cain said of his career as a Bethlehem firefighter for 20 years. “She knows you can’t always help everybody, and there’s government red tape you have to go through and things of that nature, and she still wants to help kids.”

Robert Cain described his daughter Natalie as an “old soul” and a “good person at heart” who will succeed as a social worker because of her disposition and work ethic.

“She’s always been a tough cookie,” he said. “She works hard for things she wants.”

Milena Garay, Liberty High School

Garay, 17, is also excited to attend Moravian next year to begin her studies in nursing, a career she chose because of her love of caring for others.

“I’m really fascinated with body systems and medications, but most importantly it’s about helping people and communicating with them,” the senior at Liberty said after the scholarship ceremony Thursday.

Garay also works a part-time job and has spent time during her high school career volunteering at Fountain Hill Elementary and Broughal Middle School. She attended both BASD schools and returned to help with creating yearbooks and organizing a reading program.

Garay also has participated in Liberty’s Angel 34 club to raise money for pediatric cancer patients and St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Health Career Exploration Program.

Last school year, Garay shadowed nurses through the St. Luke’s program, working at the hospital’s Fountain Hill campus.

“It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever been through because I learned so much,” she said.

“That’s where I gained my interest in nursing, as well,” Garay added. “It was really incredible to be able to talk to nurses, [patient care assistants], the unit clerks and to all these health care professionals and to be able to be by their side and work together with them.”

Garay was impressed by the knowledge the nurses had about their patients and various medications.

She also feels strongly about using her Spanish fluency to help communicate with patients. Garay goes to doctor appointments with her father, who immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador, to translate for him.

Garay’s mother, Vilma, also immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador. She said she’s happy her daughter chose to study nursing and excited about the scholarship.

“I cried, I can’t believe it,” she said of learning Garay won the award.

Daiyana Rodriguez, a Spanish teacher at Liberty, said she was not surprised Garay received the scholarship after having taught her for four years.

“She’s a very quiet student but very insightful,” Rodriguez said. “You can tell she’s always thinking about things, and through the years that she’s been here, she’s coming out of her shell a lot because she’s naturally very shy, but she’s always pushing herself.”

Rodriguez also said Garay is proud of her Hispanic identity and passionate to give back to Hispanic patients, especially in difficult times.

“Nobody goes to the hospital to have fun, and you do want to find the person who speaks your language,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said she’s learned a lot personally from Garay’s empathy.

“It’s kind of nice to be exposed to that characteristic in people because that’s not an everyday thing anymore,” she said. “I feel like empathy is getting lost, and that’s her whole dream, to help people, and that’s beautiful.”
