The next section is on how to prepare your child for Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus entrance exam will give you more insights about preparation.

How to prepare for the 11 Plus entrance exam for the Henrietta Barnett School?

As discussed in the earlier section about the competition for getting a place in HBS school, this section will now give more insights about the preparation for HBS.

Every parent in Barnet and outside barnet make sure that their child is practising many resources and various practice books available in the market. These resources are very good for practice. But, this is not enough and do not reflect the difficulty level of what HBS Second Round is expecting.

Most of the students in Barnett has practised many resources available in the market. But HBS is looking at an exceptional child, as said before only top 3 to 4 % of the top students. Therefore the school while designing the papers more likely to avoid the similar language of questions or style of questions appearing in various 11 plus resources available in the market.

Furthermore, these resources do not reflect the complexity of the HBS school exam paper.

We strongly recommend parents that the children who are appearing for HBS school 11 Plus exam must be exposed to different 11 Plus Past Papers, which contains more logical, problem-solving type of questions and the language of the mathematical problems must be unique.

This year our students secured 140/140 in QE boys exam and Band A in HBS. Our tutors worked hard. We never practised the resources which are commonly present in the market in our tutoring classes. Our Tutors always challenged our students on more on logical problem-solving questions, lots of word problems and every question in our tutoring session was different.

Our tutors used to set up a structured homework on the 11 plus practice books and 11 plus past papers as homework for the student.

Every question the student needs to solve in less than 40 sec and the time management was on the priority.

Our success formula shows that students who practised a variety of Mathematical questions not just from typical 11 plus resource provider but from other independent school’s past papers succeed to get an entry into the Henrietta Barnett School.

To give an example, if you look at Manchester Grammar School Papers, the questions are tough. Also, the language of the problems is very tricky to understand even for an adult. Our students when they appeared for HBS 11 plus exam last year told us that practising past paper questions helped them to crack the second round of HBS and managed the time accurately to complete the paper in given time, by writing stepwise answers and showing nice and clean workout for each question.

question_08_henrietta barnett school sample papers

The question above is from Manchester grammar school paper. The problem clearly shows a difficult language where many children struggle. Our stepwise solution will be helpful and develop the confidence of a child. There is time guidance so the parent can monitor the child is solving question under time pressure.

For HBS second round, they look at the approach of a student to solve the question. Hence writing steps are extremely important. That shows examiner the thought process of child and method to answer the questions.

We strongly recommend the parents must practice scholarship questions. The parents can find the scholarship type of questions in 11 Plus Independent school Past papers . The parents can browse at the end of each 11 plus exam paper, the difficulty level of scholarship problems is very high. Practising these scholarship questions we have noticed that it gives a boost to a child’s independent thinking and logical approach to tackle any question. The students are not scared to see the language of the exam question when it appears in the actual exam 11 plus entrance exam in Henrietta Barnett School (HBS).

Also, there are many past papers along with solutions on our website. Top mathematicians write these solutions. We recommend that students use 11 Plus Past Papers with solutions to have more practice for a variety of questions which may come in their examination.

Parents are advised to print the papers from our recommended practice paper links and can give it to the student ensuring the student complete the paper under timed and exam conditions.

The parents can come back to the website to mark the answers.

Solving a variety of papers helps students to learn time management.

Please see below links for our highly recommended resources.

Our top mathematician tutor team has put enormous efforts to write detail solutions to each question.

If you as a parent know what your child’s weak area is our system will show you all question segregated by topic, and you can practice them.

So well in fact, that they are even thinking about putting her though to the level 6 SATS exam for english - what am i doing wrong at home? Or are they marking the children to high in these mock tests? it does make you think. Maybe she's picking up on my stress, which is then causing her not to work as well? I can't wait for this to be over, i just want some normalitiy back! Has any one else experienced the same thing - is this just nerves? I'm hoping that once she gets in there, there won't be any distraction i.e TV, computers etc she may get back that sense of being in a familiar working environment and it may help her to work better?

Prepare Your Child For The 11+ Exam

  • Essential 11+ English and maths skills
  • Verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions
  • Reading comprehension worksheets & CLOZE tests
  • Henrietta Barnett School (Barnet, girls)
  • Mill Hill County High School (Barnet, mixed)
  • Queen Elizabeth’s School (Barnet, boys)
  • St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School (Barnet, girls)
  • The Latymer School (Enfield, mixed)

Mill Hill County High School is partially selective and also has 24 music places and 12 dance places, and Latymer has 20 music places. Children will need to audition for these places.

What do the tests involve?

Each school offers a different combination of areas to be assessed in their tests. The table below summarises the contents of the test at each school:

The format of the test varies between the schools too, from multiple-choice questions to a piece of creative writing. You'll find more detailed information on testing arrangements on the schools' websites. Henrietta Barnett holds its tests in two rounds, with only the top 300 girls invited back for round two, while children applying for a selective place at Mill Hill take an initial VR test, and successful candidates are then recalled for two further tests.

What version of the test is used?

Test providers vary between GL Assessment and CEM (University of Durham).

How do you arrange for your child to take the test?

For any of the Barnet schools, you will need to fill in a test application form in order for your child to sit the entrance test. Barnet Local Authority's website has comprehensive information on each school, including their admissions criteria and how to register. If you're interested in The Latymer School need to fill in the school's online registration form . For families without online access, paper copies are available from the school office. Photographic ID is required for all candidates taking the test.

Where are the tests held?

The tests are held in the individual schools.

What is the pass mark?

The required standard differs from school to school; for example, to be considered for a place at Queen Elizabeth's, your child will need a mark above 220, while Henrietta Barnett allocates its places in rank order, and there is no set pass mark. Some of the schools are heavily over-subscribed : Henrietta Barnet receives in excess of 2000 applicants for 93 places in Year 7, and the Latymer School regularly receives 10 applications for each of the 186 places available. You'll find more details about each school’s admission criteria on their websites.

How can I help prepare my child?

The schools differ in how they advise parents to help their child prepare, so visit their websites for more details, including familiarisation papers to download or information on where to buy relevant practice materials.

You can find useful area-specific e-papers created , designed to reflect exam formats from Exam Paper Plus:

New 11+ Online Creative Writing Course

Last updated: september 2, 2023.

henrietta barnett creative writing

We are delighted to introduce our new 24-week 11+  Online Creative Writing Course  for year 4 and year 5, which starts in October 2023 and finishes in June 2024. This course is exclusively taught by creative writing experts and is focused on getting your child top marks in 11+ creative writing tasks for selective grammar and independent schools. Spaces are filling fast, and we have limited capacity; book soon to avoid disappointment.

Who is it for?

The Creative Writing Course is aimed at students going into year 4 and year 5 who are targeting grammar and independent schools that include a creative writing task as part of their 11+ entrance exams. Such schools include Tiffin and Tiffin Girls’ School, the Sutton grammar schools, The Henrietta Barnett School, and independent schools that use a writing task as part of their exams (please see further down this email for a full list of schools).

Why is creative writing important?

Creative writing is a significant component of most second-stage grammar and independent school 11+ exams. Schools use creative writing exercises to test a student’s ability to write engagingly whilst also using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. These exercises give students the opportunity to stand out by demonstrating their originality and imagination. The results of the creative writing task can often determine whether or not a child gets into a selective grammar/independent school. The purpose of this course is to maximise your child’s scores in writing components of 11+ exams to give them the best chance possible of securing a place at their school of choice.

Hello everyone, We've recently moved and are considering having our daughter attend Henrietta Barnett School, given that we're now within the catchment area. I understand that in the initial round, children are evaluated on English, Verbal, and NVR. I'm struggling to find any detailed information online about the English section in the second round of testing. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone here could provide some insight or advice on this matter. Thanks a lot in advance!

There are lots of practice test papers here if you haven't already seen them. The Henrietta Barnett School » 11 Plus (11+) Exam 2023 « Year 7 Entry (exampapersplus.co.uk)

The Henrietta Barnett School » 11 Plus (11+) Exam 2023 « Year 7 Entry

Detailed Information About The Henrietta Barnett School 11+ Entrance Exam for Year 7 Entry • Resource Recommendations are Included.

https://exampapersplus.co.uk/henrietta-barnett-school-11-plus-11-exam-information/#The%20Henrietta%20Barnett%20School%2011%20Plus%20(11+)%20Exam%20Information%202023

From what I remember (and I am going back years and years) the English paper was the standard Comprehension and Essay. Of course it may have changed now.

I may have misunderstood but I thought it was the case that if you live within the catchment area then you don't have to pass the round 2 test - qualifying to sit round 2 by scoring high enough in round 1 is enough for a place if you live less than 3 miles from the school, and the round 2 test is the tie-breaker for the (thousands of) applicants who live further away.

@JaukiVexnoydi , I think the top 300 in round 1 take the round 2 test, the scores are then assessed by the admissions criteria with point 3 being within 3 miles, they have 104 places in total for the 300 candidates. There may be more than 104 applicants who meet points 1-3 of the criteria etc so then it's on rank order etc.

Ah so the people within 3 miles still take the round 2 test, but if there's fewer than 104 people in those 300 who live within 3 miles they will get a place whatever their score, and if there's more than 104 people in those 300 who live within 3 miles then none of the people who live more than 3 miles away will get a place, and the score is used as a tie-breaker within catgory 3. That makes sense. The daughter of a friend applied last year and wasn't successful and I was surprised as she's a very bright kid, but with these stats you have to be in the top 5% of bright to get a place and being just in the top 6% or 7% isn't enough. Scary.

JaukiVexnoydi · 15/06/2023 15:04

I'd say it's in the top 3 in the country in terms of how tough it is to get in. It's very very hard.

Hi! Not a mum, but I sat this year's exams for HBS and got in, so I can tell you about the english on the second round. We were given what I remember as roughly a two-page text, and three essay-type questions which required long (page long) answers. General 11+ stuff with analysing characters and atmospheres for questions one and two, whereas question three was a creative writing task. Hope you find this information helpful 😁

PreplexJ · 16/06/2023 20:49

I'm just trying to give my share of the little advice I have🙂

The margin of error is low and it is time pressured, you need some luck on first round. 1-2 questions distance will have more than 100 kids... (depends on birth month)

tennissquare · 15/06/2023 14:53

Less than 50% girls in the second round meet point 1-3 in the past 3 years could be higher coming years but it is unlikely to have more than 104. But the council is tightening on the location check now I think.

Thank you very much for your feedback this is helpful. 😀

Thanks so much! That’s really helpful. I’m glad you did well and got in. Can you remember what the text was or what it was about? I know this won’t come up again but it might help me to tailor my daughter’s reading a bit. Also what was the creative writing task? I’m wondering if it’s descriptive or whether it’s another style of writing.

Shope23 · 23/06/2023 15:43

Hi! Unfortunately I don't remember details of the text but I do remember it was a short narrative/description mix (I don't think they'd put poems in the exam) and the for the creative writing task we had to write from the perspective of a person who'd had their home flooded (I remember that this was related to the text, although I can't remember the text itself). I'd say for the creative writing no matter what task given to split it into at least 75% description and 25% moving forward in the plot, dialogue, ect. From what I've been told, the examiners look mainly for a child's ability to use figurative language and description in a clever way, so fitting it in before after and in-between the plot rather than having 3 paragraphs description followed by 3 paragraphs of none. This generally means you achieve 75% description without dragging on too much. As for recommendations on reading, I'd say reading a variety would benefit performance on multiple genres, however I did find consistencies between some of the 5 entrance exams I did in the sense that they occasionally use 'extracts', so the story doesn't end. This sometimes leads to the creative writing task being to continue the story (this isn't about HBS specifically but just what I've found generally). I'm glad my previous comment helped, I hope this one does too :)

Anyone knows any face to face tutoring for Henrietta which has good success record?

For your daughter to be considered for a Year 7 place, you must complete both the Common Application Form (CAF) via Barnet Local Authority and The Henrietta Barnett School Entrance Test Entry Form, which can be found on the school’s website when registration is open.

It is important that parents apply to the school to be considered for a Year 7 place at HBS. Does The Henrietta Barnett School have a catchment area?

The school doesn’t have a catchment area, anyone can apply and anyone can sit their first round test. • Round Two: English and Mathematics. The English section will test a student’s comprehension and creative writing skills, while the maths section focuses on problem solving skills.

The results of both tests will be used to determine the final rankings and place allocations for Year 7.

Why do some of the recommendations above show me independent school papers?

The main difference between independent and grammar school papers is the question format. Independent schools usually assess with standard format questions, which means students need to write out full answers. Grammar schools usually use multiple-choice format questions.

Whilst Henrietta Barnett School is a grammar school, they actually use the independent school (standard) format for some of their exams, which is why they are included in the recommendations above.

If you don’t buy a Bundle, don’t forget to use the code eppdiscount at checkout to get 10% off orders over £70 and 20% off orders over £250.

Our practice tests aim to show what sort of questions were included in Henrietta Barnett School 11+ past papers. The information provided about Henrietta Barnett School was believed to be correct at the time of publishing. However, please be aware of future changes. We advise you to contact the school directly if you are unsure of anything. School contact details are provided within the post.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
