My Favorite Countries in the World (from a traveler who’s been to nearly 100)

my favorite country france essay

What’s your favorite country?

I get asked this question all the time.

It’s the most difficult to answer. The short answer is, I don’t have one. I have many favorites. I like different places for different reasons. In no particular order, I’ll list all of my favorites.

My Favorite Countries in the World

Favorite Countries in the World

Greece has been on my mind since I fell in love with the island of Lesvos in 2017. After leaving Greece, I couldn’t shake it from my memory. Traveling around other Mediterranean countries the thought crossed my mind “It’s nice here, but it’s certainly not Greece.” I know that’s the wrong mentality, but hey, those are my feelings, and feelings can’t be wrong, right? So apologies to lovely Albania and Malta, but if I only had one week to live, I’d be eating souvlaki and sipping a thick Greek coffee in some vine-shaded village square somewhere in the Aegean.

Malaysia is perhaps the best food country in the world . I say that because it is home to three outstanding cuisines of its diverse population. Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine are all readily available and because of Malaysia’s eating out culture, meals are affordably priced for locals. Much of the best food is served at mom and pop cafes or from carts at food centers. But Malaysia is more than just food. Its mix of indigenous and other cultures means different customs, holidays, religions, and so on. Plus, I love the architecture of the former Straits Settlements on peninsular Malaysia ( Penang , Malacca). On Borneo, there is some nice wildlife viewing (albeit under threat from agriculture/habitat loss)

Favorite Countries in the World

I entered into the world of Central Asia in my early twenties as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan. While I absolutely loved my host country and its people (perhaps the world’s most hospitable) I also grew very fond of Kyrgyzstan . It’s a land of high-altitude pastures and cool, clear lakes. One of snow-capped peaks and bubbling hot springs and people willing to invite a stranger into their yurt for a cup of fermented mare’s milk. I like Kyrgyzstan so much that I wanted to take other travelers there and now I do. If this sounds like your cup of kumis then you should join us. See my Kyrgyzstan trekking trip for more info.

I fell in love with the landscape and culture of Spain on my first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in 2005. I returned in 2008 for another Camino (Via de la Plata) and to stay to teach English. I ended up living there for about a year, enjoying tapas and wine after work, exploring the neighborhoods of Madrid, and getting into the rhythm of the Spanish lifestyle. The typical traveler to Spain enjoys the incredible cuisine here, the diversity of the country’s distinct regions, its rich art and architectural heritage, and the history of its small cities, towns, and villages throughout the countryside.

Favorite Countries in the World

Spain’s neighbor to the west is another of my favorite places. You can tell I have an affinity for this part of the world. Portugal’s historical towns and cities are intriguing and its coastline is delectable . Portuguese are proud but very open to outsiders and well-educated. There’s a bit of Roman history here, some top-notch winemaking, delicious food, and thought-provoking street art. But most of all for me it’s the atmosphere of Portugal that I love most, and that’s what sticks out in my memory. I just loved being there.

my favorite country france essay

South Korea

I’ve been to South Korea on several occasions. I’ve taught English there, lived there temporarily on other occasions, and explored most corners of this small mountainous peninsula. Koreans have a strong identity tied to their land, cuisine, and language . There are many distinct aspects of Korean society and the Korean people are proud of their heritage . They hold on to many of their traditions while embracing change and modernity in a fast-paced world . I may be biased because I married a Korean, but this is an intelligent society with a high quality of life.

Favorite Countries in the World

Peru is too intriguing a place not to mention in this list. What’s so great about Peru is the diversity of experiences one can have there. You can ride a dune buggy across towering dunes, admire the work of ancient pre-Incan civilizations, surf some of the Pacific’s best waves, see an enormous array of wildlife, venture into the Amazon (which makes up a third of Peru!), and take on some of the best trekking in the Andes . Eat your way through Lima , South America’s foodie city. And did I mention Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley? Enough Inca sights and Quechua culture to take a week of your time.

I traveled for a few weeks in Syria before the civil war. What I remember most is how completely foreign everything was to me. Not even the same numbers system was used! But also I remember how welcoming people were. Syrians chatted with me, bought me lunch, and helped me find my way when I was lost. It is a country with a magnificent cultural heritage, extraordinary ruins (much of which have been destroyed in the war), a vast desert landscape, and some of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet.

The digital nomad in me fell in love with Romania and wanted to stay. Who doesn’t love affordability and lightning-fast internet ? But Romania is much more. What interests me most are the old Saxon towns and villages of Transylvania, the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, and the folk traditions of Maramureș. Add to that some delicious Romanian food and a trip to the capital Bucharest, which has an enticing mix of architecture from numerous eras. The combination was enough for me to work remotely from Bucharest for a month and develop a small group tour to Transylvania .

The thing that everyone notices about Japan is its seamless fusion of the old and new. In addition to that, the Japanese do urban society like no one else. Japanese cities work flawlessly. They are efficient, clean, crowded, and somehow quiet. But I also love hiking in Japan’s mountains, following its pilgrim trails, soaking in its hot springs , sipping its bowls of noodles, and eating its fresh seafood catch. I am also most happy riding Japanese trains. One thing I’d like people to know is that Japan is not as expensive as they think.

There is so much packed into little Georgia : the subtropical Black Sea coast, a productive wine-country, a very intriguing and revered cuisine, ancient churches, Ottoman bathhouses, breakaway republics, mountain fortresses, and alpine hiking. One of my favorite adventures in Georgia was a trip to Svaneti, a mountainous region inhabited by the Svans, known for its stone towers. I haven’t been to Georgia since 2007, but my travels there were some of my most memorable and adventurous.

Taiwan has got a great standard of living, some of the world’s best food , easy and comfortable transportation, a rich culture, fun outdoor activities, safe cities, and very helpful and friendly residents. When you’ve got your fill of urban adventure in Taipei, head to the east coast for hiking in the mountains, soaking in hot springs, cycling through rice paddies, tasting tea, and renting a scooter for more fun. A friend invited me to stay with him in Tainan and I explored the cultural side of Taiwan, visiting lots of temples in this historic capital.

The United States

While it seems funny to list my home country after years of living and traveling outside of the USA, the diversity of geography in the world’s fourth-biggest country is staggering. I’m never a person to think “mine is best” but after traveling the world for two decades, one of my favorite places is the destination of one of my earliest vacations: the American West. The high-elevation Colorado Plateau is home to numerous National Parks, unbelievable geological land formations, dinosaur graveyards, outstanding outdoor sports, Native American cultures, and so much more. Additionally, the old-growth forests of California, Oregon, and Washington State are among the most magical places on the earth. When you’re alone, looking up in a Redwood grove, you’ll understand.

Favorite Countries in the World

If you forced me to narrow it down to one country to call my favorite, I’d have to choose India . The diversity of this sub-continent is astonishing. You can go from crossing deserts by camel to meditating in yoga ashrams in the foothills of the Himalaya to birdwatching from boats in the backwaters of tropical Kerala. India has 122 major languages and more than 2,000 ethnic groups ! Wherever you go in India there is always something interesting to experience – and that’s why I never tire of this fascinating country. I will have never visited India enough times.

As you can see, I have a lot of favorites. This is why the question is so difficult to answer. When I travel, I look for things to love about the place – its people, history, food, or landscape. There have been very few places I’ve left thinking that I’ve never wanted to return. Here are some additional favorites that didn’t make the first cut.

Favorite Countries in the World

Honorable Mention:

Uzbekistan – I lived in Uzbekistan for two years and crisscrossed the country countless times. Silk Road cities, good food, and the most open and hospitable people on the planet.

Nepal – The soaring Himalaya, the magnificent Himalaya, the extraordinary Himalaya. These mountains make me cry tears of joy.

Bangladesh – I think it was a week before I saw another foreigner in Bangladesh . Bangladeshis are the most friendly and enthusiastic about meeting outsiders. This trip has remained close to my heart – from tea country to the Sundarbans Mangrove forest.

Egypt – I have great memories of adventures in Egypt in 2007. Superb diving in the Red Sea, chaotic urban adventures in Cairo and Alexandria, far-out oases, and mind-blowing archeology.

Mongolia – The wide-open landscapes you’ve only dreamed about! Real living nomadic cultures, ancient Buddhist traditions, dinosaur bones, and an autumn golden eagle festival in Western Mongolia .

Italy – If you want the best of the best in Europe, it’s no contest. Italy is packed with world-class art and architecture, an incredible food culture, stunning medieval towns, ruins of ancient civilizations, and passionate Italians.

Tunisia – Old school backpacking adventures , incredible archeology, some really friendly people, and super-cheap prices.

Israel and the Palestinian Territories – Fascinating religious history, intriguing current events, and some of the tastiest food in the Middle East.

Mexico – A tremendous diversity of landscapes and cultures are packed into Mexico. And the food is world-renowned.

Colombia – Soaring mountains, two coastlines, coffee country, Amazon jungle, colonial villages, and the warmest people in South America. What more could you want?

China – Get lost on Planet China. The largest population on earth is home to hundreds of ethnic minorities, spectacular landscapes, and towns that rarely, if ever, see foreigners.

Bosnia & Herzegovina – East meets west in Europe. B & H is steeped in Ottoman history and Sarajevo and Mostar are two places you’ll never forget.

Bhutan – If you wanted to create a serene and peaceful sanctuary to be a Buddhist monk, don’t bother. It already exists. Welcome to Bhutan, last great Himalayan kingdom .

Poland – Although Poland suffered greatly in a World War tug of war between Germany and Russia, there are lovely historic cities here with great architecture. And my Slavic soul feels at home in Poland.

Switzerland – Besides the obvious – MOUNTAINS – Switzerland is the intersection of Romantic and Germanic Europe – making Switzerland a cultural and natural highlight of Europe.

Turkey – I spent about four weeks traveling around Turkey and there was still plenty more to see. Most travelers miss Eastern Turkey. Fascinating culture and people that take food very seriously.

Myanmar – Super friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and Bagan. You may not like the government, but you’ll love everything else about Myanmar. Experience the best of Myanmar on my good friend’s Un-Tour to Myanmar .

The United Kingdom – After traveling in Asia and Europe so much I appreciate being able to connect with people in the UK with the same mother tongue.

Future Favorite Countries – Places I haven’t been to yet

I’m sure there are plenty of future favorite countries out there that I just don’t know yet. The way travelers talk about some countries make me want to drop what I’m doing and book a ticket. High on my list are Iran, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Morocco, Uganda, Lesoto, Rwanda, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. I could include many more on this list.

Why France has been my favorite travel destination for more than 20 years

Boulanger-2Bvolets

France was not always my favorite travel destination. First there was Spain, for a couple of weeks every summer. It was a family tradition. I always had fun there, on la Costa Brava, with my parents, my brother and our relatives. When that was over, we spent the rest of the summer with our grand-parents, in Southern France, and at home (wherever home was, because we moved every few years.) Then, as a middle school student, I started learning English and became enamored with Great Britain, visiting with my family – Ah, that first ferry crossing on the English Channel, the tall white cliffs of Dover appearing in the distance! – then on school trips, and later as a tour director for a European company, leader in educational travel. Finally, when I started studying the United States during my senior year in high school, I *fell* into American culture, an experience that would take me across the pond, over and over again, until I settled in the Seattle area many years ago. So many trips, so many adventures, so many happy memories! France, I am almost embarrassed to admit, was never at the top of my list. I smiled when I heard that most French people spend their summer vacation in France, often staying with relatives and friends. “ Why? ” I wondered, looking longingly at the big wide world, waiting to be explored.

Fast forward 30 or 40 years. I have led the expatriate life for more than 20 years now. I know I’ve been lucky to fly back home often. When I arrived in Seattle, I decided that seeing my parents or my brother was a prerequisite, a necessity, an unalienable right.  My American-born son would know his French roots, speak French, and be able to function in Europe. For me, at least, there was never any question. And so we flew to France, to Paris, (since they all live in Paris,) with the occasional side trip to Spain, or England, when we could spare a few days. After a few years, a funny thing started to happen. I wanted more. Paris, and the family were not enough. I wanted to see  France, to go back to those cities where we had lived and explore new areas. And so, during each trip, I started stealing a few precious days away from family time, and traveled around l a Belle France,  cherishing   moments when I could be a tourist, looking at my homeland with a renewed sense of wonder, as first time visitors do. How much fun I have had, falling in love with France all over again! Every summer, my American friends travel to exotic locations, or take long trips across the United States. I enjoy listening to their travel stories, but I do not envy them. If you gave me an extra week off, and enough money to cover my airfare today, France is where I would go, in a heartbeat.

It seems I am not the only one enjoying la Belle France . This summer, (FGIS note: story written in 2014,) the French government announced that with over 84 million foreign visitors in 2013 alone, my homeland remains the most visited country in the world, and by a pretty large margin. The international media enthusiastically embraced the story  and tried to analyze the reasons for France’s enduring popularity. I shared this article with the French Girl in Seattle Facebook community, and many attempted to answer the question: Why is France so popular ? Opinions included: romance, a rt , gastronomy, history, culture .  Others gushed about “France’s allure,” and “the ephemeral feeling of Frenchness,” palpable all over the country. Matt Long, the story’s author, concluded: “France {Paris} fulfills the promise of Europe, even for Europeans.”

I agreed with most of these comments. How could I not? So I went back to my favorite photo library, the place where I keep all these snapshots of favorite French trips. And I came up with  The Top Ten Reasons why France is my favorite travel destination.

1. Food, glorious French food Yes, it can be that good. I am not a foodie, but there are classics I crave all year, and happily indulge in as soon as I set a foot in my homeland. This won’t come as a surprise if you read this  story .

2. France is a modern country, where one can get lost in time

In the land of the T.G.V. (high speed train,) the soaring Millau Viaduct , and credit card chip technology, there is also a healthy respect for tradition. Often, the past re-appears in the blink of an eye.

3. Hanging out in a Renoir painting (just another day at the office .)

4. It’s all in the presentation

The French love of aesthetics is legendary. Everything in French life has to look/taste/sound just so, including the French language. An enduring (endearing?) quest for excellence, and elegance.

5. France: Touristy yet real Chers Français  : How I love observing you as you go about your business, ignoring the crowds and commotion around you.

6. Les Français  : The people the world loves to emulate, but claims to hate, until they meet them

Argumentative. Critical. Feisty. Soulful. Educated. Direct. Culture proud. Welcoming.

Don’t change too much. You have your priorities right.

7. Glorious outdoor markets

Every large neighborhood, every town has one. Food looks, smells, and tastes better when purchased at an outdoor French market. Don’t buy your picnic supplies anywhere else!

my favorite country france essay

8. The French pace

Taking the time to smell the roses without feeling guilty, ignoring those who criticize you ( Les pauvres , they don’t understand,) feeling sorry for those who don’t know how to slow down (that includes les Parisiens!)

9. French space: Small is beautiful The French do grandeur like nobody else ( Versailles ? Loire valley castle anyone?)  They also embrace the small, simple pleasures, and the quiet, reflective moments.

10. Things I know I will always find in France A chair, a table, and a terrace, even on a small sidewalk.

La Belle France , the world’s favorite travel destination for more than 30 years — and mine . A bientôt.

I finally fulfilled my dream of visiting France two years ago ( after studying the French language for six years). It was everything I dreamed it would be… And more! I am sure I sounded like a caveman, but it was fun to “try” to speak French while I was there. Everyone I met was kind and patient with me (even if I was butchering their lovely language). From Normandy, to Paris, to Provence – I LOVED it all. I cannot wait to return someday (hopefully soon).

Bonjour Michelle. Thank you for stopping by. You did things in the right order: Learning about the culture and the language before visiting the country. As a result, you had a wonderful experience in France. You “hit” some classics on that first trip. Next time, venture out a bit and explore other areas. You will love it just as much, I promise.

I recently discovered your blog and enjoy your insights ‘re French life. It’s a coincidence that I just returned from a trip to Nice which reminded me how nice France can be. I’ve tended to visit Italy more in recent years for all the reasons you cite but will definitely be back to France soon. Also enjoyed speaking french again. .Loved your photos Merci beaucoup.

Dear Anon. Thank you for your kind comment. I can see how many of the points I raised could apply to Italy and France. I need to spend more time in Italy myself, but la Belle France is forever tugging at my sleeve, pulling me in when I attempt to leave. Come back soon!

This was the most tender of love letters to your homeland and ,I as so many others, could not agree more with each and every point! WELL SAI DEAR V and as ALWAYS well written well presented.

Dear g. How wonderful to hear from you again. You have been quiet lately, but I was hoping you were still visiting the blog or the Facebook page to check on me, as always. Thank you for the kind comments. A love letter to France. I guess that is what this story is. 🙂

I am glad to hear you are all right, even if life is busy. I am also glad to see I was right and you are close by. A bientôt, g.

yes I read and re-read- including comments- I can never get enough… just has been a busy and not in the good way, not bad either- just business errands etc barely time to breath and after sept it should calm down I AM HERE always love your postings-YOU ARE THE BEST!!

Beautifully written – you really capture why I love it here so much!! Especially the enjoy every moment and savor the delicious fresh wonderful food!! It’s really such a wonderful life and even though the French have “their ways” and often tons of bureaucracy – one can overlook so much of that for all the reasons you state! Have a great week!

Merci beaucoup Jennifer. I am so happy you enjoy your life in France– granted you live in a beautiful area. I always appreciate your positive outlook on things. You and I know that, as an expat, it is easy to go to the “dark side” — maybe because criticism makes for better copy? 😉 Good for you for keeping a positive – and open-minded – outlook. Bonne semaine à Bordeaux.

All of the above is why I live on the French Riviera and had have a long-standing love affair with France!

Living on the French Riviera remains a dream for many. That makes you a lucky person! Thank you for stopping by. A bientôt.

Hello Veronique

It is curious how absence makes us appreciate the land of our birth. I can see how you would return to France in a heart beat. There is so much to see and do and even in one lifetime once cannot do it. Have a glorious week

My dear Helen: Thank you for stopping by today. I always enjoy your visits. You are right: It would take a lifetime to see all the beauty France has to offer – and all the quirks too – Darn. I am going to plan to spend a lot more time there over the next few years. 😉

Dearest Véronique, Having just come home on a flight from Phoenix, AZ, where we made several trips throughout the state, this looooooooooooong post did make my eyes very tired. Lovely yes, I agree with all of it and mainly my online boutique clients mainly buy things made in France. Most of my things are purely French as the fabrics and everything is so unique. Sure there is a lot of fake French out there, made in China but the true connaisseur can easily tell the difference! Sending you hugs and you do look great by the way. Mariette

Merci beaucoup Mariette. Sorry the long post made your eyes tired. At least it did not put you to sleep. I would have felt bad otherwise 😉 Your store does offer a beautiful selection of fine French items. That is why you are so successful. A bientôt.

I don’t disagree with you! All very good reasons to go back to France as often as possible.

How French you have remained, after all these years in the US, Nadège! “I don’t disagree with you,” meaning you agree with me, oui? 😉

Oui!I had the best childhood ever until I was 10 years old and we moved to Paris and life was good but different for this country girl. I might be more American now than French but your photos brought back wonderful memories and yes, I agree with you.

My favorite place too, Veronique. No wonder I wound up with a French son. Lovely pix and post…a nice little trip. Merci!!

You’re welcome Suzanne. Come back anytime.

I really enjoyed this post! I am not French but I could happily visit France every year! Thanks for this!

Je vous en prie Sandy… In your line of work, I am sure you get to visit France and many other fun locales. A bientôt.

Band 7 Success

Talk About Your Favorite Country: IELTS Speaking (Cue Card With Example Answer)

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you might be asked to talk about your favorite country. The cue card will probably read: “Describe your favorite country.” And it will give you some suggestions on what to say.

Let’s look at how to answer this question for a band-seven score. Below, you can also read a good example answer ( go straight to the answer here ).

Which Country to Choose

For a question like this, it’s best to talk about a country you’ve already been to. This is because you can quickly remember your time there and talk about that.

However, you might want to talk about a country that you haven’t been to, but would like to visit. Or you could choose a country you love because of its movies, art, culture, weather, or food.

Of course, you can also talk about your own country, which is probably the simplest option of all.

In part two of IELTS Speaking, always choose the option that’s easiest to talk about.

What You Can Say

When you’ve chosen a country, here are some things you can talk about:

  • The culture
  • The weather
  • What this country is famous for
  • Why it’s a perfect place for vacation
  • Sights to see there
  • Things to do there
  • Why it’s the perfect place to live
  • Cost of living
  • Quality of life
  • Your experience when you visited that country
  • Some interesting experiences you had there
  • Why you want to visit that country
  • How often you go there
  • How long you’ve lived there
  • Anything else that comes to mind

Tell a Story

In part two, you should always try to tell a short story. With a simple story, you can:

  • Keep speaking easily for 30 seconds or more
  • Show that you can use good past tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect…)

It’s easy to tell a story about a country because you can simply remember when you visited that country and say what you did there.   So before your IELTS test, prepare a few stories about countries you’ve visited.

You can then use these stories for lots of different questions. For example, you can use your country story for questions about vacations, adventures, travel, interesting experiences, food, family, friends, and more.

Focus on Vocabulary

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you can get a band-7 score by:

  • Talking for two minutes without hesitation
  • Using some interesting, less common vocabulary
  • Not making too many mistakes

One great way to prepare interesting vocabulary is to memorize word groups .

A word group is a collection of interesting words, phrases, and idioms that describe one aspect of a place, person, activity, or thing.

For example, you might prepare a ‘busy place’ word group that includes words like: ‘bustling, hectic, crowded, industrious, fast pace of life, as busy as a bee…’ and more.

You can then use this same ‘busy place’ word group to answer many different questions about places. For example:

  • Describe your favorite city
  • Describe your hometown
  • Describe a place you like to visit
  • Describe a vacation you went on
  • Describe a city you’d like to live in
  • And many more part-two questions

So for this ‘favorite country’ question, it’s a good idea to prepare a word group now that could describe a country you like.

In the example answer below, you’ll see a ‘natural place’ word group in use.

Use Anki App to Memorize Words

One of the fastest and surest ways to memorize English vocabulary is to use a good flashcard app like Anki App.

You can also use other apps like Cake , Elsa , and IELTS Prep App to help you learn faster.

Now, let’s look at a good example answer…

Favorite Country Cue Card

Describe your favorite country.

You should say:

  • What this country it is
  • If you’ve visited this country before
  • What this country is known for

And say why this is your favorite country.

I’m going to talk about Switzerland, which is a stunningly beautiful country in the center of Europe. I love Switzerland because it has an abundance of natural beauty . Most of the country is covered by mountainous terrain and there’s so much magnificent scenery with endless  spectacular views to enjoy. The whole country is full of impressive mountains and glistening lakes .

I’ve only visited Switzerland once in my life, but I will always remember that vacation. I went on a camping trip there with my family about seven years ago. I remember driving through the picturesque mountains, soaking up the incredible views . It was a real escape into the great outdoors .

We stayed at many campsites beside the quiet waters of beautiful lakes. It was wonderful to wake up in the morning to the sound of birdsong . I recall we stayed in one idyllic natural spot for many days, right next to the water. I remember sitting outside our tent in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea and looking at a breathtaking view of a massive snowcapped mountain .

We went for many hikes through forests and meadows , enjoying the fresh air, scents of the forest, and beautiful fields of wildflowers . There were many cows with little bells around their necks and we could always hear the bells ringing gently.

I think Switzerland is a fantastic place to live because it’s very safe there. To be honest, Switzerland is a little expensive and the food isn’t the best food in Europe. But when you’re there, it’s really easy to drive to neighboring countries like Italy, France, or Germany because Switzerland is right in the middle of Europe and it’s a very small country. So that’s another reason why I like it.

(Word Group Used: ‘Natural Place’)

An abundance of natural beauty, Magnificent scenery, Spectacular views, Breathtaking views, Sweeping vistas, Idyllic natural spot, Stunningly beautiful, Surrounded by nature, Close to nature, Windswept, Sun-drenched, Awe-inspiring, Picturesque, Beautiful beaches, Glistening lakes, Mountainous terrain, Snowcapped mountain peaks, Verdant valleys, Undergrowth, Greenery, Foliage, Vegetation, Underbrush, Flora and fauna, Scents of the forest, Meadows, Fields of wildflowers, Escape into the great outdoors, A place with all four seasons, The cheeping and chirping of birdsong, Awaken to the sound of birdsong, Soaking up the views.

See many more word groups here .

Your Turn to Try

Do you think it’s hard to give a great answer like this one?

Don’t worry. When you’ve memorized a few good word groups, you’ll be amazed at how easily you can give a fantastic answer.

Try to answer this question now yourself.

First, choose a country you can talk about easily (preferably a country you’ve visited before).

Next, choose a word group you can use to describe that country. You could think of your own word group or use a word group from this site (see many choices for ‘place’ word groups here ).

Finally, prepare a story about that country.

Now it’s time to answer the question…

Set up the recorder on your phone and ask yourself to talk about your favorite country.

Prepare your ideas for one minute, then start talking. Try to talk for two minutes without hesitation.

When you’ve finished, listen to your recording, and see if you can improve it with more interesting vocabulary.

French Culture, Values, and Language Essay

Introduction.

France has many distinct ethnicities, and their traditions are essential for the nation. Celtic and Gallo-Roman civilizations, Francs, and Germanic tribes influenced its culture in past centuries. Nevertheless, the word “nationalism” was created by French thinkers during the Enlightenment era, instilling a passion for it in the citizens. This work aims to study a particular aspect of the culture of France, in this case, the area of cultural values.

To be French means to have French citizenship and to demonstrate the values central to French culture. Many people believe that the French are truly united people based on their attention to equality and brotherhood. Currently, individuals are reconsidering what it signifies to be French, particularly in light of the European Union’s expansion and the flood of immigrants. Nevertheless, there is a widespread belief that France should be the homeland of French citizens. As a result, the government restricts state entities from gathering background information on individuals to prevent religious and ethnic inequalities.

Nevertheless, the uniformity of modern France has become a sensitive issue. Despite an absence of evidence, it is often assumed that the French world has become more varied in the past few decades. For instance, it currently represents one of the largest Muslim societies in West Europe. In France, Muslim populations have made contributions to gastronomy, literature, and the arts. Others feel that immigrants should adapt to the predominant French culture, while some have welcomed the role of different civilizations. Nonetheless, individuals of French culture, especially immigrants, are constantly redefining what it means to be French.

Individualism is prevalent in French society, which means that the needs of oneself and one’s close family take precedence. Usually, suitable engagement is determined by whether or not an individual is in one’s circle of acquaintances. In France, there are numerous subtle social customs that reflect this tendency. From outsiders’ perspective, the French are polite and respectful and present themselves as good friends. In France, it is vital to adhere to societal expectations and maintain suitable formality. A ‘wrong step’ is an awkward or naive deed or comment in a social environment. An instance of a misstep would be addressing a friend by their first name. The French people’s formality and restrained attitude, along with the straightforwardness of the French language, might mistakenly come off as chilly or haughty to a stranger (Lodge et al., 2016). Nevertheless, correct etiquette often relaxes and relaxes in the presence of excellent friends and relatives. After being familiar, a French individual is inclined to demonstrate openness and kindness.

The French have a sense of national pride in their language since it is frequently associated with French nationality. People who seek to become residents of the nation and be acknowledged as members of the French people must be fluent in French. In the wake of globalization and the importation of American culture, the French language is also viewed as a crucial aspect in sustaining a distinct French personality (Sago, 2019). Furthermore, the expansion of the English language produced regret and dissatisfaction among the French as it signaled the demise of France’s global dominance.

To summarize, the values typical for France as a country and collectively shared by its citizens, regardless of their backgrounds, are somehow related to the unity of people and the unacceptability of discrimination. Despite the challenges caused by the mixture of cultures people bring from their homelands and the resulting confusion, these provisions are essential for addressing societal concerns. They are underpinned by a proper balance between individualism and communities in which the former is emphasized, whereas the latter matters for regulating people’s behavior which appears too formal. These characteristics are complemented by the language, which is at the center of the described system of French values, and external threats to this aspect are perceived as more critical than in any other area.

Writing an essay in French is not the same as those typical 5-paragraph essays you’ve probably written in English.

In fact, there’s a whole other logic that has to be used to ensure that your essay meets French format standards and structure. It’s not merely writing your ideas in another language .

And that’s because the French use Cartesian logic (also known as Cartesian doubt) , developed by René Descartes , which requires a writer to begin with what is known and then lead the reader through to the logical conclusion: a paragraph that contains the thesis. Through the essay, the writer will reject all that is not certain or all that is subjective in his or her quest to find the objective truth.

Sound intriguing? Read on for more!

Before we get to the four main types of essays, here are a few French phrases that will be especially helpful as you delve into essay-writing in French:

Introductory phrases , which help you present new ideas.

Connecting phrases , which help you connect ideas and sections.

Contrasting phrases , which help you juxtapose two ideas.

Concluding phrases , which help you to introduce your conclusion.

The text summary or synthèse de texte  is one of the easiest French writing exercises to get a handle on. It essentially involves reading a text and then summarizing it in an established number of words, while repeating no phrases that are in the original text. No analysis is called for.

A  synthèse de texte  should follow the same format as the text that is being synthesized. The arguments should be presented in the same way, and no major element of the original text should be left out of the  synthèse.

Here is an informative post about writing a synthèse de texte , written for French speakers.

The text summary is a great exercise for exploring the following French language elements:

  • Synonyms , as you will need to find other words to describe what is said in the original text.
  • Nominalization , which involves turning verbs into nouns and generally cuts down on word count.
  • Vocabulary , as the knowledge of more exact terms will allow you to avoid periphrases and cut down on word count.

While beginners may wish to work with only one text, advanced learners can synthesize as many as three texts in one text summary.

Since a text summary is simple in its essence, it’s a great writing exercise that can accompany you through your entire learning process.

2. Text Commentary  (Commentaire de texte)

A text commentary or commentaire de texte   is the first writing exercise where the student is asked to present an analysis of the materials at hand, not just a summary.

That said, a  commentaire  de texte  is not a reaction piece. It involves a very delicate balance of summary and opinion, the latter of which must be presented as impersonally as possible. This can be done either by using the third person (on) or the general first person plural (nous) . The singular first person (je) should never be used in a  commentaire de texte.

A commentaire de texte  should be written in three parts:

  • An introduction , where the text is presented.
  • An argument , where the text is analyzed.
  • A conclusion , where the analysis is summarized and elevated.

Here is a handy in-depth guide to writing a successful commentaire de texte,  written for French speakers.

Unlike with the synthesis, you will not be able to address all elements of a text in a commentary. You should not summarize the text in a commentary, at least not for the sake of summarizing. Every element of the text that you speak about in your commentary must be analyzed.

To successfully analyze a text, you will need to brush up on your figurative language. Here are some great resources to get you started:

  • Here’s an introduction to figurative language in French.
  • This guide to figurative language  presents the different elements in useful categories.
  • This guide , intended for high school students preparing for the BAC—the exam all French high school students take, which they’re required to pass to go to university—is great for seeing examples of how to integrate figurative language into your commentaries.
  • Speaking of which, here’s an example of a corrected commentary from the BAC, which will help you not only include figurative language but get a head start on writing your own commentaries.

The French answer to the 5-paragraph essay is known as the  dissertation .  Like the American 5-paragraph essay, it has an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion. The stream of logic, however, is distinct.

There are actually two kinds of  dissertation,  each of which has its own rules.

The first form of  dissertation  is the dialectic dissertation , better known as  thèse, antithèse, synthèse . In this form, there are actually only two body paragraphs. After the introduction, a thesis is posited. Following the thesis, its opposite, the antithesis, is explored (and hopefully, debunked). The final paragraph, what we know as the conclusion, is the  synthesis , which addresses the strengths of the thesis, the strengths and weaknesses of the antithesis, and concludes with the reasons why the original thesis is correct.

For example, imagine that the question was, “Are computers useful to the development of the human brain?” You could begin with a section showing the ways in which computers are useful for the progression of our common intelligence—doing long calculations, creating in-depth models, etc.

Then you would delve into the problems that computers pose to human intelligence, citing examples of the ways in which spelling proficiency has decreased since the invention of spell check, for example. Finally, you would synthesize this information and conclude that the “pro” outweighs the “con.”

The key to success with this format is developing an outline before writing. The thesis must be established, with examples, and the antithesis must be supported as well. When all of the information has been organized in the outline, the writing can begin, supported by the tools you have learned from your mastery of the synthesis and commentary.

Here are a few tools to help you get writing:

  • Here’s a great guide to writing a dialectic dissertation .
  • Here’s an example of a plan for a dialectic dissertation , showing you the three parts of the essay as well as things to consider when writing a dialectic dissertation.

4. Progressive Dissertation ( Plan progressif)

The progressive dissertation is slightly less common, but no less useful, than the first form.

The progressive form basically consists of examining an idea via multiple points of view—a sort of deepening of the understanding of the notion, starting with a superficial perspective and ending with a deep and profound analysis.

If the dialectic dissertation is like a scale, weighing pros and cons of an idea, the progressive dissertation is like peeling an onion, uncovering more and more layers as you get to the deeper crux of the idea.

Concretely, this means that you will generally follow this layout:

  • A first, elementary exploration of the idea.
  • A second, more philosophical exploration of the idea.
  • A third, more transcendent exploration of the idea.

This format for the dissertation is more commonly used for essays that are written in response to a philosophical question, for example, “What is a person?” or “What is justice?”

Let’s say the question was, “What is war?” In the first part, you would explore dictionary definitions—a basic idea of war, i.e. an armed conflict between two parties, usually nations. You could give examples that back up this definition, and you could narrow down the definition of the subject as much as needed. For example, you might want to make mention that not all conflicts are wars, or you might want to explore whether the “War on Terror” is a war.

In the second part, you would explore a more philosophical look at the topic, using a definition that you provide. You first explain how you plan to analyze the subject, and then you do so. In French, this is known as  poser une problématique  (establishing a thesis question), and it usually is done by first writing out a question and then exploring it using examples: “Is war a reflection of the base predilection of humans for violence?”

In the third part, you will take a step back and explore this question from a distance, taking the time to construct a natural conclusion and answer for the question.

This form may not be as useful in as many cases as the first type of essay, but it’s a good form to learn, particularly for those interested in philosophy. Here’s an in-depth guide  to writing a progressive dissertation.

As you progress in French and become more and more comfortable with writing, try your hand at each of these types of writing exercises, and even with other forms of the dissertation . You’ll soon be a pro at everything from a synthèse de texte to a dissertation!

How to Write an Excellent French Essay (Resources Included)

Tips to write an excellent french essay.

Writing essays is challenging enough, but when you are asked to write a French essay, you are not only being asked to write in a foreign language, but to follow the conventions of another linguistic and literary tradition. Like essay-writing in any language, the essential part of writing a French essay is to convey your thoughts and observations on a certain topic in a clear and concise manner. French essays do come out of a certain tradition that is part of the training of all students who attend school in France – or at least secondary school – and when you are a French essay, it is important to be aware of this tradition.

Foo

The French philosopher Michel de Montaigne is credited with popularizing the essay form as a literary genre. His work, Essais, first published in 1580, and undergoing several subsequent publications before his death in 1592, covers a wide breadth of topics, ranging from “amitié” to “philosopher c’est apprendre à mourir”, and includes many literary references, as well as personal anecdotes. The name for this genre, essai, is the nominal form of the verb essayer, “to attempt”. We have an archaic English verb essay, meaning the same thing. The limerick that includes the phrase, “... when she essayed to drink lemonade ...” indicates an attempt to drink a beverage and has nothing to do with writing about it. But the writing form does illustrate an attempt to describe a topic in depth with the purpose of developing new insights on a particular text or corpus.

French instructors are very specific about what they would like when they ask for an essay, meaning that they will probably specify whether they would like an explication de texte, commentaire composé, or dissertation. That last essay form should not be confused with the document completed for a doctorate in anglophone countries – this is called a thèse in French, by the way. There are different formats for each of these types of essay, and different objectives for each written form.

Types of Essay

1. l’explication de texte.

An explication de texte is a type of essay for which you complete a close reading. It is usually written about a poem or a short passage within a larger work. This close reading will elucidate different themes and stylistic devices within the text. When you are completing an explication de texte, make sure to follow the structure of the text as you complete a close examination of its form and content. The format for an explication de texte consists of:

i. An introduction, in which you situate the text within its genre and historical context. This is where you can point out to your readers the general themes of the text, its form, the trajectory of your reading, and your approach to the text.

ii. The body, in which you develop your ideas, following the structure of the text. Make sure you know all of the meanings of the words used, especially the key terms that point to the themes addressed by the author. It is a good idea to look words up in the dictionary to find out any second, third, and fourth meanings that could add to the themes and forms you describe. Like a student taking an oral examination based on this type of essay writing, you will be expected to have solid knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures that appear in the text. Often the significance of the language used unfolds as you explain the different components of theme, style, and composition.

iii. A conclusion, in which you sum up the general meaning of the text and the significance of the figures and forms being used. You should also give the implications of what is being addressed, and the relevance of these within a larger literary, historical, or philosophical context.

NB: If you are writing about a poem, include observations on the verse, rhyme schemes, and meter. It is a good idea to refer to a reference work on versification. If you are writing about a philosophical work, be familiar with philosophical references and definitions of concepts.

Caveat: Refrain from paraphrasing. Instead show through careful analysis of theme, style, and composition the way in which the main ideas of the text are conveyed.

2. Le commentaire composé

A commentaire composé is a methodologically codified commentary that focuses on themes in a particular text. This type of essay develops different areas of reflection through analytical argument. Such argumentation should clarify the reading that you are approaching by presenting components of the text from different perspectives. In contrast to the explication de texte, it is organized thematically rather than following the structure of the text to which it refers. The format for a commentaire composé consists of:

i. An introduction, in which you present the question you have come up with, often in relation to a prompt commenting on a thematic or stylistic aspect of the text, such as “Montrez en quoi ce texte évoque l’amour courtois” or “Qu’apporte l’absence de la ponctuation dans ce texte ?” In this section, you will be expected to delineate your approach to the text and illustrate the trajectory of your ideas so that your readers will have a clear idea of the direction these ideas will take.

ii. A tripartite body, in which you explore the question you have come up with, citing specific examples in the text that are especially pertinent to the areas of reflection you wish to explore. These citations should be explained and connected to the broad themes of your commentary, all the while providing details that draw the readers’ attention to your areas of inquiry. These different areas of inquiry may initially seem disparate or even contradictory, but eventually come together to form a harmonious reading that addresses different aspects of the text. The more obvious characteristics of the text should illuminate its subtler aspects, which allows for acute insight into the question that you are in the process of exploring.

iii. A conclusion, in which you evaluate your reading and synthesize its different areas of inquiry. This is where you may include your own opinions, but make sure that the preceding sections of your commentaire remain analytical and supported by evidence that you find in the text.

NB: Looking at verb tenses, figures of speech, and other aspects that contribute to the form of the text will help situate your reader, as will commenting on the register of language, whether this language is ornate, plain, reflects a style soutenu, or less formal patterns of speech.

Caveat: Quotations do not replace observations or comments on the text. Explain your quotations and situate them well within your own text.

3. La dissertation

The dissertation is a personal, organized, and methodical reflection on a precise question that refers to a corpus of writing. Referring to this corpus, you may be asked questions along the lines of “Que pensez-vous de l’équivalence entre l’amour et la chanson exprimée dans ces textes ?” or “Est-ce que la sagesse et la folie ont les mêmes sources?” This type of essay allows for an exploration of a question through knowledge of a corpus as well as through an individual’s cultural knowledge. The format for a dissertation consists of:

i. An introduction, in which you present the topic addressed, the significance of your argument, and the trajectory of your ideas.

ii. The body which, like a commentaire composé, consists of a tripartite development of your argument. This can follow any one of the following structures: a dialectical schema, organized into thèse, antithèse, and synthèse – an argument, its counter-argument, and its rebuttal; an analytical schema, consisting of the description of a situation, an analysis of its causes, and commentary on its consequences; a thematic schema, which consists of a reflection on a topic which you proceed to examine from different angles in an orderly fashion.

iii. A conclusion, in which you address the different ways in which you have approached the question at hand and how this deepens your insights, while placing the question within a broader context that shows room for expansion. The conclusion can open up the topic addressed to show its placement within a literary movement, or in opposition to another literary movement that follows it, for example.

NB: Approach the question at hand with as few preconceptions as possible. If you are writing on a quotation, gather all of your knowledge about its author, the work in which it appears, and the body of literature with which it is associated.

Caveat: Even for a personal reflection, such as a dissertation, avoid using the first person pronoun je. Nous or on are preferable. It is advisable not to switch from one to the other, though.

For each of these essay forms, it is a good idea to make an outline to which you can refer as you write. As your writing progresses, things may shift a bit, but having a structure on which you can rely as you gather your various ideas and information into a coherent argument provides solid foundation for a clear and well-developed essay. This also facilitates smooth transitions from one section of your essay to the next.

During your reading, you may encounter a problem, a contradiction, or a surprising turn of phrase that is difficult to figure out. Such moments in a text give you the opportunity to delve into the unique characteristics of the text or corpus to which you are referring, to propose different solutions to the problems you encounter, and to describe their significance within a larger literary, philosophical, and historical context. Essay writing allows you to become more familiar with French works, with their cultural significance, and with the French language. How To Write An Essay On My Country For Classes 1, 2 And 3

' src=

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on My Country for Classes 1, 2 and 3

10-line essay on ‘my country’ in english, short essay on my country for classes 1 & 2, long paragraph on my country for class 3, what will your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grader learn from ‘my country’ essay.

Our country has a rich history, diverse culture, valuable heritage and many unique aspects. Learning about these aspects lays the foundation of patriotism in children. The pride in their country motivates them to be good citizens and think about themselves as part of a larger community. In school, students are asked to write an essay on their country to increase their general knowledge and improve their writing skills. This can be a fairly difficult topic to write about, as students will need lots of guidance on how to weave the facts with their thoughts. Here are some sample essays on ‘My Country’ for classes 1, 2 and 3.

Writing an essay about their country requires students to balance some facts about the country with their own perspectives. Here are some tips on how to compose an essay on ‘my country’:

  • For short essays in simple lines, stick to essential facts that define the country.
  • For short paragraph essays, children will have to express their thoughts about different aspects of their country.
  • For long essays on the country, students will be required to memorise important facts about the country, balanced with their perspectives.

A short essay for class 1 and class 2 can include facts about the country, and its important accomplishments. Here is an example for a simple one-line essay on our country:

  • India is my motherland, and I am a proud citizen of my country.
  • India has a large population with diverse people.
  • India is peninsular, forming the southern tip of Asia.
  • My country is vast and beautiful, surrounded by great seas to the south and the tallest mountain peaks to the north.
  • India got its independence from the British in 1947. It is now the largest democracy in the world.
  • India is popular worldwide for farming and agriculture as many different varieties of fruits and vegetables are cultivated here.
  • India has the Taj Mahal, which is one of the wonders of the world.
  • India is a popular tourist destination for people around the world.
  • India has a rich and diverse culture with various cuisines that are loved by people across the globe.
  • Our country is considered a holy land as many spiritual seekers come to find inspiration here.

A short essay in the form of a paragraph on our country can talk about various aspects such as the culture, history, geography or anything else your child wishes to write. Here is an example:

My country, India, is an ancient country with a history that goes back thousands of years. We have a rich cultural heritage which is respected all over the world. India has also made remarkable contributions to science and technology.

India is part of the Asian continent. It is peninsular, surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, and the great Indian Ocean to the south. Towards the north, the country is surrounded by great mountain ranges with the tallest peaks in the world called the Himalayas.

India has a vast and diverse population, making it the second-most populous country and the largest democracy in the world. India has various cultures, traditions, faiths, languages and even cuisines. I am proud of my country’s rich heritage and all its achievements.

To write a long paragraph on ‘my country’ for class 3, students will have to remember important facts about India. The essay can start with an introductory paragraph on modern India and its ancient roots. It can then go on to talk about various geographical features and cultures. Here is an example:

India is my country. It is a land of diverse cultures, languages, and religions living in unity and harmony. India is also called ‘Bharat’ or ‘Hindustan’ in its native languages. The Indian flag is tricoloured with stripes of saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom with the Ashoka Chakra in the centre. India is an ancient country with a culture that spans thousands of years.

India is the world’s largest democracy, having the second-largest population. It has 28 states and eight union territories. It is the seventh-largest country by landmass. It is surrounded by the great Himalayas in the North and vast oceans to the South. India shares its borders with neighbouring countries such as China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar.

Historically the name India can be traced back to the river Indus, derived from the word ‘Sindhu.’ The country’s national animal is the tiger, and the national bird is the peacock.

India is also known as the land of spirituality and philosophy. People from different countries come to India to seek spiritual guidance. Even the practice of Yoga, now globally popular, originated in ancient India.

I am a proud Indian. If we strive for it, we can make India prosper and become a world leader in the future.

Writing an essay on their country encourages children to learn about their motherland and pick up some facts and general knowledge about their heritage. The essay also teaches children how to assimilate these facts and put them together in a coherent written format for their writing assignments. The essay can touch upon various aspects of the country, such as history, geographical and demographic facts, and noteworthy accomplishments. Students can then weave a good narrative around the facts and express their perspectives.

It is one of the few countries that you can walk around on your feet without feeling any tired, because there is always something that catches your eye and makes you more enjoying, which makes you do not feel any distances you are walking on your feet. This is what I like about Paris when I visit it.

I found my visit to Paris easy and smooth, and not as is reported, about the high prices and traffic congestion. My father and I found driving easy and everyone abides by the rules and etiquette of driving. And talking to the people is easy, simple and smooth, and I did not face any problem in understanding.

This week at Ohlala French Coffee , we will be talking about the theme of the city. This week my students are going to describe the city where they live at length. To help them talk about it and to help you too, I'm going to introduce you to the city where I live. Let's get started!

Well, I'm not exactly going to introduce you to the town where I live, because I live in a place.

It's very small and there are no points of interest. There are just houses.

So I'm going to introduce you to the town right next to me. It is a small city located in Ardèche.

We consider that a city is a city from 2000 inhabitants.

Below 2000 inhabitants, it's a village.

It is a city at the confluence of two rivers: the Dorne and the Eyrieux which cross the city.

One of the characteristics of the Ardèche is its hilly landscape and this town is located at the foot of two valleys.

It is an industrial city which is known for its textile and jewelry production.

We find in this small city several museums: a scientific, technical and industrial museum and also a museum on the creation and the know-how of jewels.

I haven't visited these museums yet, because I arrived last year and a month later France went into lockdown.

As in most French cities, there is a more authentic part of the city that is often called the bourg.

This is where you will find the market place. There is a market every Wednesday and in the summer we have a local producers' market on Friday nights.

We also have the church and a lot of small shops: a butcher's shop, a bakery, an organic grocery store, a pharmacy, a bar, etc. We have everything necessary.

We find narrow streets full of charm. I love French country towns like this one, it's always typical especially at this time of year when we have flowers and sunshine.

Even if it's a small town, it's still quite dynamic! There are cultural, musical, artistic and also sportive events.

What I like best here is that there are many places to walk around. We are lucky to have a greenway and to be able to walk or bike. In fact, the greenway was built on the old railroad, so it's a total of 90km.

Why Canada Ranks As My Favourite Country

Travel has always had the ability to transform. A new journey provides sights, personal interactions and the chance to experience a whole new way of life, thousands of miles away from home. Bringing every aspect together can have an amplified effect, and in itself can be life changing. I am living proof of how travelling has impacted my life majorly. I feel more at one with the world when I travel. I take the time to appreciate the little beauties of the world, from gorgeous architecture to the different cultures of the world. It makes me want to learn another language every time I travel too. I feel more connected to the present than what was in the past or what is to come in the future. It teaches me to have a better sense of my surroundings, a key attention to the little details and never stop looking up. And, my true love for transformational travel developed from my initial trip to Canada, the land of the happiest people. But, even to this day, Canada remains as my favourite country in the world, and for a number of reasons too.

It has some of the most spectacular cities

In my opinion, Canada is one of the most diverse and modern countries, but still posses a vast amount of culture and and radiates its own distinct personality. You will hear about a few popular destinations such as Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto, as they all resonate to travellers for their mountainous landscapes, maritime culture, indigenous people, and European routes.

Vancouver Island, Canada

Vancouver, British Colombia, remains my favourite city in Canada. There is something about the island style of living that makes everything feel that little bit more exotic. Combined with a plentiful number of creeks that passes a fresh water air breeze across the city. It’s also situated right next to a mountain range, which has given me some of the most spectacular views over the years. Its warm, moderate climate makes it the perfect Canadian destination to visit all year round.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a part of Canada that speaks for itself. It is a wonder of the world that will never fail to take my breath away. I waited many years before I finally embarked on a trip to the falls, and it completely blew my mind. If you get the chance, seeing the falls during the night is a magical experience too, as the falls glow and often enough there is a firework display over the falls too.

Toronto for me is the Canadian version of London. Fast paced, filled with buzzing coffee shops, attractions to see the city at height and always something to do for visitors. It’s a multi-cultured city, with an array of great places to shop, dine, and wine too.

Church in Montreal

Montreal offers something a little different. With European heritage, French is the main language spoken in the city, but you can be sure that everyone can speak the second native language quite easily. It’s a city filled with museums, culture, and a true homely feel. The old part of the city was a real highlight when I visited Montreal, and I think it’s great to see the original roots of the city still being shown off to those visiting from far and wide.

Diversity is celebrated in Canada

Pride in Canada

From the first time I visited Canada, I noticed quite remarkably that diversity isn’t only accepted in Canada, but it is celebrated. People have come from ends of the earth to make Canada home, and for good reason too. No matter what colour you are, what gender you identify yourself as or what sexuality you are, you’re always welcomed with open arms. In Vancouver, there is a gay district, Davie Village which proudly represents the LBGTQ society, and celebrates the Pride festival year on year.

Also, the Canadian government implemented a special day back in 2002, that every year, 27th June is known to be Canadian Multiculturalism Day, which for me speaks volumes and truly amplifies Canada’s support of diversity thorough out the country. On that day, there is arrangement of activities and celebrations that occur through each of the ten Canadian provinces.

Canada one of the most affordable countries

I stand by the fact that Canada gives you value for money, and in a sense translates to true affordability. You can stay at luxury hotels from £100 per night, which is often unheard of in other countries, and dine at high-end fine-dining restaurants or half the price in other major cities. When I went on my last visit, I explored a new city and a city I had already visited before, when comparing the prices to London, I was shocked at the price difference.

I often refrain from making beauty or designer purchases in England, and create a shopping list before visiting Canada. I often find I find the exact same products for two thirds of the price, even after conversion and no tax return either.

There is always something to do in every season

Toronto's Ice-Skating Rink

As someone who likes to participate in new and innovative things when travelling, Canada is the perfect place for travellers like me. There is always something to do, no matter what season it is. From festivals, to music shows and outdoor activities. When I was in Toronto last, there was a different kind of festival taking part in different parts of the city on a daily basis, from wine tasting events to outdoor ice-skating and light festivals. And, most of it was either free or had an entry fee of less than 10 Canadian Dollars.

If you’re visiting Canada during any of these monumental festivals through the year, I certainly recommend going to check them out: Quebec’s Winter Carnival, Ottawa Tulip Festival, the Calgary Stampede, Toronto Cavalcade of Light, Edmonton Folk Music Festival or Vancouver’s Celebration of Light.

What’s your favourite thing about Canada?

Despite its technological advancements, Japan has managed to maintain a balance with nature. The country is home to stunning natural landscapes, from the cherry blossom-lined paths of Kyoto to the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji. The Japanese have a deep respect for nature, reflected in their concept of ‘Satoyama’, living in harmony with the natural environment. This respect for nature is not only aesthetically pleasing but also contributes to the overall well-being of the country and its people.

Food and Cuisine

Japanese cuisine is another aspect that makes the country my favourite. The attention to detail, balance of flavours, and emphasis on seasonal ingredients result in a culinary experience that is both healthy and delicious. From sushi and ramen to tempura and sake, Japanese cuisine offers a variety of dishes that cater to different tastes and preferences.

In conclusion, Japan’s unique blend of tradition and modernity, technological advancements, respect for nature, and delicious cuisine make it my favourite country. The country’s ability to balance rapid technological progress with deep-rooted cultural traditions is a model for other nations. It serves as a reminder that progress and tradition can coexist harmoniously, leading to a society that is both advanced and culturally rich. This balance, combined with the country’s natural beauty and culinary delights, makes Japan a country that truly captivates my heart.

My favourite country

my favorite country france essay

wer: The country that I have always wanted to go but have not visited yet is Italy. I’ve been dreaming to visit Italy for more than 2-3 years. I’ll definitely visit the country as soon as I get free time. Italy is in Southern Europe. Rome, the largest city and the Capital of Italy has been the leading political and religious centre of the western civilization, serving as the capital of the both Roman Empire and the Christianity. I’d like to go there to see the museums, arts, streets, cultural and other attractions. Another reason I want to go there is to visit the Vatican City. I have read and heard about numerous stories and history about this country and witnessing them would be a great joy for me. There are plenty of things to see: arts, museums, Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pissa, Roman Forum, Florence Cathedral, St. Peter’s Basilica, Milan Cathedral, Sistine Chapel, Piazza SanMarco, Circus Maximux and lots of other places I’d love to visit.

Italy was one of the most advanced territories once and had lots of historically significant places to visit. I’ve read about those places so many times and heard stories from many of my friends that visiting this country has become a major wish for me. And I’m pretty positive about visiting this country in future.

Introduction

South Korea, often called the Land of the Morning Calm, holds a special place in my heart. South Korea is my favorite among the many countries I have had the privilege to explore. The allure of South Korea is captivating, drawing people from all corners of the world. It is not just a destination but an experience that leaves a lasting impression.

South Korea’s charm lies in its remarkable blend of tradition and modernity, a juxtaposition that fascinates and intrigues me. As an eighth-grader, I was introduced to South Korea through the mesmerizing world of Korean dramas, and since then, I have been smitten by its culture and history. The Joseon Dynasty’s legacy of art and Confucian values forms the cornerstone of this rich culture.

Essay On Why south Korea Is My Favourite Country

 the allure of south korea.

The allure of South Korea is a multifaceted gem. It’s not just about the historical heritage; it’s about how history intertwines with the vibrancy of modern life. The Joseon Dynasty, which spanned over five centuries, is an era that still casts its shadow in South Korea. Its profound influence on the country’s culture, traditions, and art. The architectural marvels of palaces like Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palace showcase the grandeur of that era.

The echoes of Confucianism, a philosophical system emphasizing ethics and morality, resonate throughout South Korean society. This philosophy has shaped the Korean way of life, emphasizing respect for elders and strong family bonds. It is these values that make South Korean society unique and endearing.

Modern South Korea

However, South Korea is not just about history but also about the pulsating heart of its cities, especially Seoul. The city is a testament to South Korea’s modernity and dynamic lifestyle. Seoul’s energy is contagious. It’s a place where skyscrapers kiss the sky, K-pop echoes from every corner, and a trendy café culture thrives.

The global phenomenon known as Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, has made South Korea a cultural superpower. K-pop music, Korean skincare, and Korean cuisine have captivated people worldwide. This cultural export is a testament to South Korea’s creativity and innovation.

Culinary Delights

One cannot talk about South Korea without mentioning its mouthwatering cuisine. Korean food is a journey in itself. The sizzle of bulgogi on a hot grill, the spicy kick of kimchi, and the comforting warmth of bibimbap—all these flavors dance on your taste buds. Street food in South Korea is equally enchanting. Tteokbokki, hotteok, and mandu are just a few delectable treats on the bustling streets.

The culinary journey in South Korea is not just about satisfying your hunger; it’s about exploring the culture through your taste buds. The emphasis on communal dining, where sharing meals is a cherished tradition, fosters a sense of togetherness and warmth.

Natural Beauty and National Parks

Beyond the hustle and bustle of urban life, South Korea boasts breathtaking natural beauty. The country’s national parks are like hidden gems waiting to be discovered. From the lush greenery of Jirisan National Park to the serene lakes of Seoraksan National Park, each park offers a unique experience.

Jeju Island, referred to as the “Hawaii of South Korea,” is a natural wonder. Its volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and lush forests make it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. Exploring these national parks and islands allows you to connect with the raw and untouched beauty of South Korea.

The Korean Peninsula

South Korea’s location on the Korean Peninsula adds to its unique appeal. The peninsula has a complex history marked by division and conflict, yet South Korea has emerged as a beacon of resilience and determination. The desire for peace and reunification with North Korea is a driving force in South Korean society.

Visiting the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the border between North and South Korea, is a sobering experience. It serves as a reminder of the importance of peace and diplomacy. South Korea’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the division on the peninsula is commendable.

The Joy of Visiting South Korea

Visiting South Korea is a joy in itself. The country offers a vast range of experiences that cater to different interests. Exploring historic sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village is like taking a journey through time. The architectural marvels and well-preserved heritage sites are a testament to South Korea’s commitment to preserving its history.

Bustling markets like Myeongdong and Namdaemun offer a glimpse into the vibrant street culture of South Korea. From fashion and cosmetics to traditional crafts, these markets are a shopper’s paradise. The local markets also serve as excellent places to savor authentic South Korean street food.

What makes South Korea truly remarkable is the warmth and hospitality of its people. Locals often go out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Whether it is striking up a conversation in a cafe or helping you find your way in the bustling streets of Seoul, the kindness of the South Korean people leaves a lasting impression.

Immersion in the Korean Lifestyle

To truly understand South Korea, one must immerse themselves in the local lifestyle. Wearing a Hanbok, the traditional Korean attire can be a transformative experience. It’s not just clothing; it’s a connection to centuries of tradition. The rich colors and clear Hanbok designs reflect South Korean culture’s beauty and depth.

Engaging with locals and participating in traditional ceremonies offers a deeper insight into South Korea’s way of life. The ceremonies, such as the tea ceremony or Seollal (Lunar New Year) celebrations, are opportunities to connect with the rich tapestry of South Korean traditions.

Sharing meals with locals is another way to become a part of the vibrant South Korean culture. Food is a central element in South Korean society, and sharing a meal with someone is a gesture of friendship and inclusion. Whether enjoying a traditional Korean barbecue or savoring homemade kimchi, these moments create lasting memories.

 Conclusion

This Essay On Why south Korea Is My Favourite Country concludes that South Korea is my favorite country for many reasons. Its captivating blend of history and modernity, mouthwatering cuisine, natural beauty, and warm-hearted people make it an unforgettable destination. Exploring the Korean Peninsula, whether strolling through the streets of Seoul or hiking in a national park, is an enriching experience.

South Korea offers a sense of belonging and being part of something exceptional. It is a place where history comes to life, tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously, and where the warmth of the people leaves an indelible mark on your heart. I encourage everyone to visit South Korea and discover its unique charm, just as I did. It is a lifetime journey that will leave you with remarkable memories and a deep appreciation for this remarkable nation.
