Summary, Reflection, and Review: “My Father Goes to Court” By Carlos Bulosan

In the Island of Luzon, There was a Happy family who always enjoying the day everyday. The children were always playing outside with a smile, bathing in a cold river from mountains, full of enjoyment. Until one day, there was a Sad family who came home in their house. They always locked the windows tightly that no sunlight enters.

The children were curious on that house because they looked up in the window, pale and thin children looking to their place. The children were always watching the other children, playing outside with the sun shines. The rich man always locked the windows and closed all curtains. The rich man’s servants were cooking special foods that the happy children smelt the aroma. They always stay in the window to smell the spirit of the food. They sing, play, swim. Sometimes, they laugh out loud then the other neighbor join them and laugh at them.

Until the day came that the rich man filed a case to the Father that he always stealing the spirits of  his food and wealth. Though, they end up in the court, with their family. They wait for the jury to judge them. The father had no attorney but the rich man had. The father always agree to all question that they always smell the aroma of their food, but not wealth. Father told the rich man to see his children, and they came, pale and thin.

After that, The father stood up and get some coins to his children and wife and put them in his straw hat. Then, he walked to the rich man and sounded the coins and then he said to him if he heard the spirit of the sound, then the rich man agree and he fell down. The Jury stopped the case and congratulated the father and he want to hear his children laugh. They laugh out loud but the jury laughed harder.

Reflection:

In the story, The Family of the father were happy all the time, they don’t need wealth, they need love and sacrifice that connect them. They play a good role in their life without the wealth. They always have positive minds and looks that they don’t depend on what they see. They aren’t materialistic. They always end up with a smile. Plays peacefully.

In the other side, They depend on what they see. Meaning, they judge the other side with their wealth and spirit. Sad and pale. They are materialistic, not that much but they always end up with a negative look to the other side and accused them stealing their spirit.

In this story, The moral lesson is Don’t accused someone with a shallow reason that they steal yours. Its a bad thing to judge people with low state. Don’t Depend on what you see. The shallow reason is that they smelt their spirit which is superficial. They just smelt and watch to them. You’ll look stupid if your reason is shallow to accuse people with low standard. Don’t file a thing if you know to yourself that you’ll end up, loser. What if in Modern day, someone filed a case to you? It is hard to depend your answer.

My Father Goes To Court by Carlos Bulosan

When I was four, I lived with my mother and brothers and sisters in a small town on the island of Luzon. Father's farm had been destroyed in 1918 by one of our sudden Philippine floods, so for several years afterward we all lived in the town, though he preffered living in the country. We had a next-door neighbor, a very rich man, whose sons and daughters seldom came out of the house. While we boys and girls played and sand in the sun, his children stayed inside and kept the windows closed. His house was so tall that his children could look in the windows of our house and watch us as we played, or slept, or ate, when there was any food in the house to eat. Now, this rich man's servants were always frying and cooking something good, and the aroma of the food was wafted down to us from the windows of the big house. We hung about and took all the wonderful smell of the food into our beings. Sometimes, in the morning, our whole family stood outside the windows of the rich man's house and listened to the musical sizzling of thick strips of bacon or ham. I can remember one afternoon when our neighbor's servants roasted three chickens. The chickens were young and tender and the fat that dripped into the burning coals gave off an enchanting odor. We watched the servants turn the beautiful birds and inhaled the heavenly spirit that drifted out to us. Some days the rich man appeared at a window and glowered down at us. He looked at us one by one, as though he were condemning us. We were all healthy because we went out in the sun every day and bathed in the cool water of the river that flowed from the mountains into the sea. Sometimes we wrestled with one another in the house before we went out to play. We were always in the best of spirits and our laughter was contagious. Other neighbors who passed by our house often stopped in our yard and joined us in our laughter. Laughter was our only wealth. Father was a laughing man. He would go in to the living room and stand in front of the tall mirror, stretching his mouth into grotesque shapes with his fingers and making faces at himself, and then he would rush into the kitchen, roaring with laughter. There was plenty to make us laugh. There was, for instance, the day one of my brothers came home and brought a small bundle under his arm, pretending that he brought something to eat, maybe a leg of lamb or something as extravagant as that to make our mouths water. He rushed to mother and through the bundle into her lap. We all stood around, watching mother undo the complicated strings. Suddenly a black cat leaped out of the bundle and ran wildly around the house. Mother chased my brother and beat him with her little fists, while the rest of us bent double, choking with laughter. Another time one of my sisters suddenly started screaming in the middle of the night. Mother reached her first and tried to calm her. My sister criedand groaned. When father lifted the lamp, my sister stared at us with shame in her eyes. " What is it? " <other asked.

This paper presents the 2006 MIRACLE’s team approach to the AdHoc Information Retrieval track. The experiments for this campaign keep on testing our IR approach. The paper introduces how multi-class and single-class problems of searching and classifying target objects in remote sensing images of the Earth are solved. To improve the recognition efficiency, the preparation tools for training samples, optimal configuration and use of deep learning neural networks using high-performance computing technologies have been developed. Two types of CNN were used to process ERS images: a convolutional neural network from the nnForge library and a network of the Darknet type. A comparative analysis of the results is obtained. The research showed that the capabilities of convolutional neural networks allow solving simultaneously the problems of searching (localizing) and recognizing objects in ERS images with high accuracy and completeness.

The narrative is set in a metropolis in the Philippines. The immature storyteller begins by depicting his big household. Though they are hapless they are full of mischievousness and laughter. The kids are all strong and healthy even though they frequently go hungry. In contrast their rich neighbor’s kids are thin and sallow although they are given plentifulness of good nutrient which their destitute neighbours enjoy smelling over the fencing.

Consequently the rich adult male brings a charge against the narrator’s household for stealing the spirit of his family’s nutrient. The absurd instance goes to tribunal and the narrator’s male parent agrees to pay back the rich neighbour. He does this by roll uping coins from all his friends present in his chapeau so agitating the chapeau full of coins. Bing charged to pay for the spirit of nutrient which his household purp

ortedly got from its odor he maintains that the jingling of the coins is a just equivalent. The justice regulations in the hapless father’s favour and the rich adult male is forced to go with no other payment than the “spirit” of the money the hapless adult male collected.

•  The character seems existent and deepness in emotions and they are recognizable in their stereotypes. And their motivations were apprehensible that we can associate to them. The Good guy/s which is the male parent was sympathetic and same as the bad guys/s which is the rich adult male that it is truly bad.

III. Puting

•  The narrative is set in a metropolis in the Philippines that accurate to what the narrative all about. The scene of the narrative is really Filipino. people in the barrio. assisting each other. The immature storyteller is leting the readers to see what they are reading so that readers could conceive of clearly the location around the characters.

IV. Point of View

•  This Short narrative is a second point of position because the immature storyteller itself is in the narrative. He or She is inside of the narrative she or he is stating what is go oning at that place.

V. Figurative Language

•  In this affair it uses Hyperbole because it says here that the hapless household was stealing the spirit and wealthy of the nutrient by smelling it merely doing for the rich household became thin and sallow. And besides see the paying of the male parent to their nutrient spirit and affluent New York jangling the coins.

• condemn - express complete disapproval of; censure.
• anaemic -  lacking in colour, spirit, or vitality.
• molave -  a large Philippine timber tree
• presidencia -  the office and function of president
• waft - pass or cause to pass gently through the air.
• strut - walk with a stiff, erect, and apparently arrogant or conceited gait.
• glower - have an angry or sullen look on one's face; scowl.
• The Narrator - he is one of the children of the farmer/farm owner.
• The Father/Farmer(?)/Farm Owner  - the father of the narrator. Since it was mentioned in the story that he owned a farm, I might refer to him as the farmer or farm owner, to avoid confusion.
• Mother-  the wife of the Farmer/Farm Owner.
• The Children of the Farmer (?) - the siblings of the narrator. They were referred to as strong, robust, and cheerful.   They were accused of stealing the spirit of the food which was prepared for the rich man's children.
• The Rich Man- the neighbor of the narrator when they moved to town. Described as someone who is not sociable, especially to those who has a lower status in life than him. It is implied in the story that he is also stupid. He accused the family of the narrator of stealing the spirit of the food which his servants prepared. 
• The Judge - the one who is in charge of the case filed by the rich man. He was described as someone who is old-looking.
• The Rich Man's Children- described as thin, anaemic, and pale.
• Servants of the Rich Man- the ones who are preparing food for the rich man's family.

• Be careful when accusing others without logical basis.

The father of a 27-year-old woman who has been approved for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) has asked a Calgary judge to dig into the circumstances that led to two of three doctors approving his daughter's application.

A publication ban protects the identities of the parties and the medical professionals. CBC News will identify the daughter as M.V. and the father as W.V.

At issue is whether the courts can step in when family members, with no legal standing, have concerns about the MAID approval process.

Currently, two doctors or nurse practitioners have to approve a patient for MAID. 

Husband, 83, dies with medical assistance after wife's court bid to stop him fails

The medical practitioners must determine, through an assessment, that the person has a grievous and irremediable medical condition that causes intolerable and enduring physical or psychological suffering.

A previous requirement of MAID — a reasonable foreseeability of natural death — was repealed in 2021. For now, people suffering solely with mental illness are excluded from accessing MAID.

No explanation for MAID qualification 

Court of King's Bench Justice Colin Feasby heard that M.V. — who lives with her father — was approved in December. Her date to receive MAID was set for Feb. 1. 

The day before she was scheduled to die, W.V. was successful in seeking a temporary injunction, preventing M.V. from accessing MAID. 

She has not submitted any medical documentation that could explain why she qualifies for MAID. 

In a brief filed with the court, W.V. argued "M.V. suffers from autism and possibly other undiagnosed maladies that do not satisfy the eligibility criteria for MAID."

'None of your business'

M.V.'s lawyer Austin Paladeau argued she's "not trying to withhold or hide anything."

Justice Feasby summarized his understanding of M.V.'s position: that she feels she has a right to keep her medical records private.

"She's saying 'it's none of [W.V.'s] or the public's business, I've been approved by two doctors, I am entitled to this and, court, it's none of your business either.'"

Sarah Miller, the lawyer for the father, called the situation "a novel issue for Alberta."

"As it stands, AHS [Alberta Health Services] operates a MAID system with no legislation, no appeal process and no means of review," wrote Miller in her brief for the court. 

Miller has asked Feasby for a judicial review of M.V.'s MAID approval.

M.V. 'not a reliable witness'

The father submitted a 2021 report with the court, authored by a doctor at a neurology clinic who concluded M.V. required no followup and was "normal" and sent her back to her family doctor.

Miller also pointed out that on her initial MAID application, M.V. indicated her death had become "reasonably foreseeable" yet she was approved as a "track 2" MAID patient, which means death is not reasonably foreseeable. 

"Therefore M.V. is not a reliable witness," wrote Miller in her brief. 

Feasby heard that two doctors were initially approached by M.V. One agreed to sign off on approving her for MAID, the other denied the application. 

A third "tie-breaker" doctor, as described by lawyers for Alberta Health Services, was then offered to the patient, in this case, M.V. 

MAID 'unlike any situation'

W.V. believes M.V. is not eligible for MAID and that her "capacity to consent to MAID is impacted by mental illness." He also feels she's been "unduly influenced by a third party," according to one of the documents filed with the court. 

If the MAID approval process is not followed as set out in the Criminal Code, medical practitioners could be charged criminally. 

"If the courts can look at this in the criminal context, the courts can look at this in a pre-criminal context," argued Miller. 

Emily Amirkhani, another lawyer for W.V., argued that MAID is "an incredibly unique system" where if a person seeking MAID is wrongfully approved, "that person is never going to cause anyone to look behind that curtain" because they got what they wanted. 

"It's unlike any situation I can think of where the wrongful administration of the system cannot be brought to light but for someone besides the patient," said Amirkhani.

Medical autonomy

M.V.'s lawyer Austin Paladeau stressed the case boils down to an adult's right to medical autonomy. 

"He's at risk of losing his daughter and while this is sad, it does not give him the right to keep her alive against her wishes," said Paladeau. 

"One of the real challenging parts of this process … is what's actually happening," said Paladeau.

"I completely understand [W.V.] does not want his daughter to die … I represent [M.V.], I don't want her to die either but that doesn't play into account here.

"Even though we have or may have very strong views … at the end of the day this is [M.V.'s] decision."

Judge calls case 'vexing'

Paladeau argued that the determination of eligibility for MAID, including whether an individual has capacity, should be left to the approved assessors.

He also noted that parliament considered and rejected a supervisory and/or review role for judges.

Feasby described the case as "vexing." 

"As a court, I can't go second guessing these MAID assessors … but I'm stuck with this: the only comprehensive assessment of this person done says she's normal," said Feasby. 

"That's really hard."

The judge reserved his decision on whether he'll set aside the temporary injunction preventing M.V. from accessing MAID. 

The other part of his decision will deal with whether a judicial review will take place, which would examine how doctors came to sign off on M.V.'s MAID application.
