How to remove a background from an image in PowerPoint (Step-by-Step)

  • February 20, 2019

In this post you’ll learn how to remove the background from images in PowerPoint (as pictured below) using two different tools.  Knowing how to use these tools is important because they give you more ways to use pictures in your presentations.

Example removing a background from an image in PowerPoint

Tool #1: The Set Transparent Color tool

This technique works best for pictures with 100% solid backgrounds (like the white backgrounds you find in stock photos). If your background is not 100% solid, you’ll have to use the Remove Background Tool instead.

Tool #2: The Remove Background tool

This tool works best for removing complicated backgrounds from photos and images. Also, this technique gives you the most flexibility when deciding what parts of the background to remove.

After removing your image background, you can then compress your images in PowerPoint to reduce your file size. To learn how to do compress images in PowerPoint, read our guide here .

NOTE:  If you are using a picture or image you found online, make sure you properly cite the creator or website you downloaded it from. To learn how to properly cite pictures and websites in your presentations,  read our guide here .

Note:  These background removal techniques DO NOT work with vector graphic files such as SVGs, WMs and DRWs. If you have one of these files, you’ll first need to convert it to the JPEG or PNG file format to follow along.

You can alternatively make your image background transparent (instead of removing it) using the Set Transparent Color tool. See below for more details.

Removing a White Background from an Image

The fastest way to remove an image background is to use the Set Transparent Color tool. The only catch is that it only works for removing solid colors, like white backgrounds.

To remove a white background, select your picture, picture format tab, open the color drop down and select set transparent color and select that color in your image

To remove a white background from an image in PowerPoint, simply:

  • Insert  and select a picture on your slide
  • Navigate to the  Picture Tools Format Tab
  • Open the  Color dropdown menu
  • Select the  Set Transparent Color  tool (your cursor becomes a little pen with an arrow)
  • Click  on the color you want to remove from your background

PowerPoint turns that solid color transparent throughout your entire picture. In this case, the white background is removed.

Example of a picture with the white background removed

This technique works best when you have a fairly simple background as pictured above. If your background is more complicated, you’ll need to use the Remove Background Tool instead. We cover this option further down in this article.

When Set Transparent Color Doesn’t Work

The Set Transparent Color tool works very well if you have photos with solid backgrounds. You will find these types of backgrounds on a lot of the stock photos you find online, such as on Pexels .

Just keep in mind that the Set Transparent Color tool does have limitations.

Example #1: This technique does not work well if the content of the image and its background are too similar in color. Because the entire image below is white, the woman’s face is removed with the background.

Example of a problem when setting a transparent background when the whole image is basically the same color

Example #2: This technique does not well with backgrounds that have shadows or gradients.  Because the  Set Transparent Color tool only removes a single color, gradients and shadows will be left in.

Example problem of setting a transparent background color when the background is not entirely white, but is instead a gradient

Example #3: This technique does not work well because of the detailing (like strands of hair, clothing, and skin).

Example of setting a transparent background color when there are lots of details like hair and fingers in the image

For any of these types of scenarios, you’ll want to use the Remove Background tool instead.

Removing a Complicated Image Background

To remove a complicated image background select your photo, Picture format and select remove background

To remove a background from an image, simply:

  • Select the image on your slide
  • Navigate to the Picture Format tab
  • Select the Remove Background command
  • Adjust your removal settings (described below)
  • Select Keep Changes

The magenta background portion of your image is then removed from your photo, as pictured below.

Example of a complicated picture background remove from an image, letting the background color of your slide stand out

NOTE: Instead of removing the background from an image, you can instead add transparency to your picture. See how to do this, read our guide here .

Adjusting What Gets Removed in Your Image

When you first select the  Remove Background command, PowerPoint takes a guess at what you want to remove. In the picture below, that is shown in a pinkish (magenta) color.

The pink area in the photo is what PowerPoint is guessing you want to remove from the background (it doesn't always get this right).

While PowerPoint normally does a fairly decent job at guessing, it doesn’t always get it right.

Notice in the picture above that the woman’s arms are magenta, as is the bottom part of the man’s body. PowerPoint is guessing that those should be removed.

To fix it, all you need to do is specify what you want to keep and remove in your picture using the designated tools.

1. Mark Areas to Keep in Your Image

Select Mark Areas to Keep and color in the areas of the photo that you don't want removed from your image

If PowerPoint doesn’t guess correctly and removes too many parts of your image, you can simply mark the areas you want to keep. To do that, simply:

  • Select Mark Areas to Keep
  • Click and draw over the parts of your photo you want to keep (creates green marks)

PowerPoint readjusts the parts of your image background that are removed. You might need to repeat this a few times to get it right.

2. Mark Areas to Remove in Your Image

Select Mark Areas to remove and color in the areas of your photo that you do in fact want PowerPoint to remove from your image

If PowerPoint guesses incorrectly and leaves too much background, you can mark areas to remove. To do that, simply:

  • Select Mark Areas to Remove
  • Click and draw over the parts of your photo you want to keep in Red

PowerPoint readjusts what parts of your background are removed. Keep in mind that depending on the complexity of your image, you might need to do this a few times to get it right.

3. When Remove Background Doesn’t Work

While the Remove Background tool will work for most backgrounds you want to remove, there are some limitations.

Limitation #1: If your picture is too homogenous, even the marking areas to keep and remove may not work. Sharp crisp photos work best.

Example of a difficult photo to remove the background because the image is one solid color

Limitation #2: It can be hard to remove the background around small details (like the background around strands of hair, binder rings, etc.).

When removing a white background from an image, PowerPoint is not very good at removing the white background around small details

Limitation #3: If the background is a gradient, is too complex or has shadowing, removing the background can also be very challenging.

When using the remove background tool in PowerPoint, check your image to make sure that all of the aspect you want to keep are within the image

Undoing Your Background Removal

By default, when PowerPoint removes the background from your image, it merely hides it from you.

That means that at anytime you can revert back to your original image or change your mind about what parts you want to remove.

To undo your background removal, select your photo, select Remove background and select discard all changes

To undo your background removal (or start over) simply:

  • Select your photo with the removed background
  • Navigate to the  Picture Format tab
  • Click  Remove Background

Your image background reappears and you can make more edits (or select Discard All Changes to revert back fully).

The only time that you are not be able to revert to your original image is if you compress it. To learn more about your image compression options to save on file size, read our guide here .

Final Thoughts

In summary, while the  Set Transparent Color tool is the fastest way to remove your image background, it only works some of the time.

That’s why I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the  Remove Background tool. If you work with lots of images, this will become your go-to tool for removing backgrounds in PowerPoint.

If either of these methods doesn’t work, you can move over to Photoshop for more precision.

While PowerPoint’s picture editing features are GREAT… it’s hard to beat a dedicated picture editing program like Photoshop.

Hide Background Images for Cleaner Printed PowerPoint Slides

  • Brock University

Yuri_Arcurs/Getty Images

Using a  design template  adds an attractive appeal to your presentation. The brightly colored templates are eye-catching and bring a professional air to your presentation. However, for printing purposes, the background graphics that look so good on screen hinder the readability of the slides on the handouts. A simple process suppresses the background graphics temporarily.

Instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010; PowerPoint for Mac, and PowerPoint for Microsoft 365.

Remove Background Images in Printed Slides

Before printing your presentation slides, handouts, and notes, hide the background image to make it easier to read the printed pages.

Go to Design .

In the Customize group, select Format Background  to display the Format Background pane.

In the Fill section, place a checkmark next to Hide Background Graphics .

The background graphics disappear from each slide and the presentation can be printed without the background images. To toggle the background graphics back on, remove the checkmark next to Hide Background Graphics .

Print in Monochrome for Additional Clarity

Slides may be hard to read if you print them in a light color. Printing in  grayscale  or solid black shows only the text on a white background. This setting makes the slides easy to read and all the important content is still present.

To make this change, go to File > Print and select Grayscale or Pure Black and White , instead of Color .

How to make an image transparent in PowerPoint

03.03.22   •  #powerpoint #design.

Transparent images can visually enhance presentations, as they are great to use as background images in PowerPoint. If the text on a background image cannot be read properly, you can make the background transparent, to increase readability. How this works and everything about transparent images in PowerPoint can be found in this blog article.

1. What is transparency in pictures?

Transparent images are translucent images that allow the underlying elements to show through. Transparency is also called opacity and is expressed in percentage. Depending on the opacity, you can see the underlying elements to different degrees.

Possible applications of transparencies

2. using transparent background images in powerpoint.

Transparent background images on slides are ideal to showcase written content better. The transparencies enhance your slide designs and at the same time make all content such as text, but also diagrams or numbers, more legible. Are you still looking for a suitable background image for your presentation? Then read the blog post The 5 best sources of free images , to find out where you can find royalty-free wallpapers.

There are several ways you can make images transparent in PowerPoint. Here you will find tutorials on how to make the entire background of a slide or just parts of an image transparent.

Make complete slide background transparent

  • Insert the image you want into your presentation.

3. Transparent shapes – Make only parts of the background transparent

If you want to make only a part of the background transparent in order to place a text, then this works with an additional shape that gets the transparency setting. Our tip : Transparent shapes can be used to create visually exciting slides with high readability.

Insert shape

4. Make a transparent gradient overlay

Even gradients in PowerPoint can be made transparent with a few steps.

Insert shape

  • Gradient stop: Position: 35%, Transparency: 100%
  • Gradient stop: Position: 50%, Transparency: 20%
  • Gradient stop: Position: 65%, Transparency: 0%
  • Gradient stop: Position: 100%, Transparency: 0%

5. Remove the background of an image

Sometimes it can be helpful to remove the whole background of an image to be able to position it in a neutral background. For this purpose there is a function in PowerPoint, which allows the quick removal of disturbing backgrounds.

Place image on slide

Tip : The function Remove background works best with strong contrasts between foreground and background.

How to make an image transparent in PowerPoint?

  • Insert an image into your presentation and click on it.
  • Go to the tab  Picture Format .
  • Click on  Transparency .
  • Select your desired opacity level.

How to save transparent images in PowerPoint?

When saving images with transparencies, it is necessary to ensure that they are saved in a special format, for example as a PNG file. Other formats, such as JPG cannot save the transparency.

How to remove the background of images in PowerPoint?

  • Go to the tab  Picture format .
  • Now the background is automatically selected and colored pink.
  • When you are satisfied with the selection, click Keep Changes .

How to Hide the Background When Printing in Google Slides

Formatting your presentation with a background in Google Slides can make it much more visually appealing when giving that presentation on a computer.

The addition of colors and patterns often makes your information look better, which will improve the way that your audience evaluates your presentation.

But the crispness of visual displays often doesn’t translate to the printed page, and you may find that your information is difficult to read when it is printed atop a colorful background.

Additionally, many slide backgrounds consume the entire slide, which can mean that you are using a lot more ink when you print your presentation.

If either of these issues concerns you, then it may be better to print your presentation without the background.

Our tutorial below will show you how to change this setting so that the printed slides won’t include the background, but the background will remain when you show the presentation from your computer.

How to Print Without the Background in Google Slides

The steps in this article assume that you have a Google Slides file that you want to print but that the presentation has a background that you do not want to print.

Note that this will not remove the background from the presentation, so it will still be visible when presenting from a computer. This will simply stop the background from appearing when you print the presentation.

Step 1: Sign into your Google Drive at  https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive and double-click the file that you wish to print without its background.

Step 2: Click the File tab at the top of the window.

Metrics details

Meningioma is the second most common intradural extramedullary tumor, following schwannoma. Meningioma is primarily categorized as benign World Health Organization grade 1, but clear cell meningioma is grade 2 of the intermediate malignant category. Clear cell meningiomas are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all meningioma tumors. There is no previous report of multiple intraspinal clear cell meningiomas without dural attachment.

Case presentation

A 27-year-old Asian male patient presented with lower right extremity pain, and had undergone tumor resection for intracranial clear cell meningioma 7 years previously, with re-resection and radiotherapy for local tumor recurrence at our hospital’s department of neurosurgery being carried out 4 years previously. No recurrence was observed since then. Preoperative lumbar magnetic resonance imaging showed two tumors at the L1 and L4 levels, both mimicking schwannoma with well-defined margins, no dural tail sign and homogeneous internal contrast. Intraoperative findings on tumor resection showed two tumors contiguous with the right L2 and L5 roots, which were not attached to the dura mater, similar to a schwannoma. After gross total resection, the postoperative pathology revealed no nuclear SMARCE1 antibody staining. The patient was diagnosed with clear cell meningioma. The patient’s postoperative course went well, with no symptoms of nerve dropout and no recurrence 2 years after surgery. In this case, both lumbar lesions were well demarcated and spherical in shape, occurring with single roots. Tumor characteristics suggested a primary rather than a metastatic lesion. Clear cell meningioma is characterized by a SMARCE1 mutation and is different from other types of meningiomas.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of multiple intraspinal clear cell meningiomas without dural attachment at the lumbar spine after resection of intracranial clear cell meningioma. We speculate that the two tumors were de novo lesions on the basis of the features of the tumors, although they were detected 7 years after the resection of intracranial clear cell meningioma.

Peer Review reports

Clear cell meningioma (CCM) is an unusual histologic strain of meningioma, accounting for only 0.2% of all meningiomas [ 1 ]. The pathologic feature of this tumor is the presence of clear cytoplasm in the tumor cells due to glycogen accumulation. Pathologic identification remains essential for the diagnosis of CCM, though a novel mutation in SMARCE1 , encoding a subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, is linked to the development of CCM [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. CCMs occur most commonly in the cerebellopontine angle [ 6 ]. Intraspinal CCMs are very rare, and less than 100 cases have been reported in the English literature [ 7 ]. CCMs without dural adhesions are even rarer, with only 20 cases reported [ 8 ].

We report the first case of multiple nondura-based clear cell meningiomas without SMARCE1 expression at the lumbar spine 7 years after resection of intracranial CCM. It is speculated that the two intraspinal tumors were de novo lesions due to loss-of-function mutations in SMARCE1 , resulting in inherited disorder of multiple spinal meningiomas [ 3 ]. If CCM is detected in the intracranial or intraspinal lesion, close observation is required to determine whether other CCMs occur in the lesion.

A 27-year-old Asian male patient was referred to our hospital after experiencing pain in his right leg over a period of 3 months. He had no family and psychosocial history. His medical history is as follows. At the age of 20 years, he first visited the neurosurgeon’s office for chronic headache. No clinical findings were observed in his extremities. Head gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a tumor located in the left cerebellopontine angle (Fig.  1 a). Surgery was performed for resection followed by histological evaluation of the tumor, which revealed a sheeting architecture containing round to polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm and many small clumps of collagen fiber. The tumor was diagnosed as CCM (Fig.  1 b). When the patient was 23 years old, local recurrence of the tumor was detected adjacent to left foramen of Luschka. Re-resection was performed followed by radiotherapy 38.0 Gy in 10 fractions. No local recurrence and no symptoms were observed for the following 4 years.

Histological evaluation of the initial intracranial tumor revealed a sheeting architecture containing round to polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm and many small clumps of collagen fibers ( b ). The tumor was diagnosed as clear cell meningioma

At the age of 27 years, the patient complained of pain in his right lower extremity and required the assistance of a cane to walk. No muscle weakness, bowel dysfunction, or bladder dysfunction were detected. The Japanese Orthopaedic Association score (maximum score of 29 points) was 20 before the surgery. No intracranial tumor was detected. A lumbar MRI showed two intradural masses without “dural tail signs” at the L1 and L4/L5 levels (Fig.  2 a, b). Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MRI images showed homogeneous enhancement of the masses (Fig.  2 c–e). Surgery was performed 3 months after the patient’s first examination in our department. After T12-L1 and L4-5 laminectomy, tumor margins underneath the dura mater were identified using ultrasound, and the dura was split. Under the arachnoid membrane, the tumors were growing separately in the right L1 (Fig.  3 a, c) and L5 (Fig.  3 b, d) roots and no dural attachment was detected, mimicking schwannoma. Complete total resection of the tumors was performed after severing the afferent and efferent nerves. The tumor was covered with a capsule, and no adhesion to surrounding tissue was observed.

Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MRI images showed the masses with homogeneous enhancement on the sagittal image ( c ) and the axial images at the L1 ( d ) and at L4/5 ( e ) levels

figure 3

Histologically, the tumor showed sheeting architecture containing round to polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm and many small clumps of collagen fiber. Whorl formation and psammoma bodies were poorly formed (Fig.  4 a). A few peripheral nerves were involved. Immunohistochemistry revealed nuclear loss of SMARCE1 expression in the tumor cells (Fig.  4 b). The pathology of the intracranial CCM that occurred 7 years prior and this intraspinal CCM were similar (Figs.  1 c, 4 a).

Whorl formation and psammoma bodies were poorly formed (H and E stain) ( a ). Immunohistochemistry revealed the loss of nuclear SMARCE1 expression in the tumor cells (SMARCE1) ( b )

The postoperative course was uneventful. The pain and numbness of the right lower extremity were completely alleviated. No recurrence was observed 2 years after surgery.

CCM was first described by Manivel in 1990 [ 9 ]. Although most meningiomas are grade I, CCMs are categorized as grade II because of their aggressive behaviour [ 10 , 11 ]. CCMs account for 0.2% of all meningioma cases [ 1 ]. CCM most commonly occurs in the cerebellopontine angle [ 6 ]. Intraspinal CCMs are very rare, and less than 100 spinal CCMs have been reported in English literature [ 7 ]. In our case, two schwannoma-like intraspinal CCMs were detected 7 years after intracranial CCM.

The intraspinal CCM in our case was probably not a metastasis for the following reasons. First, meningioma metastases are rare, accounting for only 0.1% of all cases. The most common sites of metastases are the lungs, liver, lymph nodes, and bones; intraspinal metastases are rare [ 12 ]. Only one report showed two CCM intracranial and intraspinal lesions and both of the lesions were adherent to the dura mater [ 13 ]. Adhesion may be associated with metastases. Second, in our case, the tumors were well defined and rounded, and each tumor was located in a single root only. Further, spinal cord metastases of malignant meningioma are usually irregularly shaped with indistinct borders [ 14 , 15 ]. Maamri et al . reported that some spinal CCMs do not show dural attachment [ 8 ]; non-adherent CCMs are very rare, as only 20 cases have been reported in the English literature. In those cases, no metastases were reported. On the basis of these findings, the intraspinal lesions in our case may be multiple de novo tumors rather than metastases.

Histologically, our case study tumor showed sheeting architecture containing round to polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm and many small clumps of collagen fibers. Whorl formation and psammoma bodies were poorly formed and consistent with previous reports of spinal CCM [ 7 , 8 ]. However, it is noteworthy that immunohistochemically, nuclear loss of the SMARCE1 expression in the tumor cells was confirmed in our case. Recent research showed that a loss of SMARCE1 expression is a specific diagnostic marker of CCM [ 2 ]. The tumorigenesis of meningiomas, derived from arachnoid cells, depends on various germline and somatic gene mutations. The most common mutations are germline NF2 mutations, which are responsible for neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) [ 16 ]. Two genes ( SMARCB1 and SMARCE1 ) encoding two proteins of the SWI/SNF complex (BAF47 and SMARCE1) have also been proven to be the primary cause of hereditary meningiomatosis [ 2 , 16 ]. In CCM, mutations in the SMARCE1 gene occurred in 33 out of 34 cases, and unlike other meningiomas, CCM tumors are derived from progenitor cells [ 17 ]. Sievers et al . speculated that these tumors may arise from a different precursor cell population than other meningioma subtypes [ 17 ]. On the basis of these facts, we cannot rule out the possibility that genetic factors may have contributed to the multiple intraspinal lesions in this case. Briefly, SWI/SNF subunit mutation due to loss of SMARCE1 might cause tumorigenesis in neural stem cells. Further work is required to elucidate the mechanism of SMARCE1-associated meningioma development.

Tao et al . reported that total resection of spinal cord CCM promoted a lower relapse rate. They suggested that radiation therapy need not be performed immediately after the first operation [ 18 ]. We also did not use radiotherapy. However, the 1-, 5-, and 10-year recurrence-free survival rates after resection of spinal CCMs are reported to be 87%, 71%, and 47%, respectively [ 7 ]. Thus, these tumors should be carefully monitored.

We experienced a very rare case of multiple intraspinal CCMs 7 years after the initial resection of an intracranial CCM. The tumors were nondura-based meningiomas of the lumbar spine. Genetic factors, such as loss-of-function mutations in SMARCE1 , may influence multiple occurrences of intracranial and intraspinal lesions. If CCM is detected in an intracranial or intraspinal lesion, close observation is recommended, with the possibility of other CCMs occurring in the lesion.
