Why is November 14 celebrated as Children’s Day?

Pandit Nehru’s love for children

Care for children

Students and Eradication of illiteracy in Bengali

Neglect of children in society

Children’s Day celebrations in different parts of the country

Children's Day Speech in Bengali:

(Why We Celebrate Children’s Day?)

Because education builds character and prepares you to handle issues in the future, Nehru wished for youngsters to appreciate education. He enthusiastically supported kids' unalienable rights to an education.

Activities For Children's Day

Children can make memories on children's day that they will always appreciate. It can be difficult to plan something unique and special for your kids each year, but it will be enjoyable if you use some of these fun activities. Here are some suggestions for planning fun things to do for Children's Day—

Have a traditional picnic in the park with your pupils, complete with sandwiches, snacks, kid-friendly drinks, etc., to commemorate this wonderful Day. On Children's Day, the focus is on spending quality time with family, instructors, and classmates, even if everyone enjoys going on picnics.

Alternate between student and teacher responsibilities for one day. Give your students the role of educators. Let them teach whatever they choose.

At school, students frequently eat lunch with their friends. A potluck could be a nice idea so that the students can socialise with people outside of their own circle and eat with their seniors and juniors.

Costume parties are among the most creative and engaging activities for kids. The same holds true for adults. Children can join in pleasant party activities while dressing up as their favourite sci-fi or comical characters, dancing, singing and eating cake.

He was born on 17 March 1920 in Tungipara village in Gopalganj subdivision of Faridpur district in the then Bengal province of India. His father's name is Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and mother's name is Saira Khatun.

The child named 'Khoka', who was born in Tungipara on that day, later became the guide for the liberation of the oppressed Bengali nation. Due to his deep political wisdom, self-sacrifice and extraordinary affection for the people, he became the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation in his old age. As a teenager, he became involved in active politics. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested and imprisoned for the first time for joining the anti-British movement while studying in the eighth grade at the Mission School in Gopalganj. From then on, the journey of Bangabandhu's lifelong struggle began.

Bangabandhu along with his colleagues formed Bangladesh Chhatra League in 1948 and later Bangladesh Awami League in 1949. After the partition and independence movement of '47, language movement of '52, united front election of '54, education movement of '62, six-point movement of '66 and after the mass uprising of '69, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was established as the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation in the historic elections of '70. Independence was achieved through nine months of bloody armed struggle under his undisputed leadership. An independent Bangladesh emerged on the world map. Bengalis celebrate National Children's Day on March 17 every year on his birthday to remember their leader.

On this occasion, President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages. The National Implementation Committee and various socio-cultural organizations including Awami League have taken detailed program to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The day will also be celebrated with due dignity in Bangladeshi embassies in other countries of the world.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government has taken various initiatives to ensure justice for people, attributing any country's development to independent judiciary, strong parliament and administration.

"After assuming power, we've made the judiciary totally independent separating it from the administration, which was the vision of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," she said.

The premier said this while addressing the closing session of the two-day International Conference on "South Asian Constitutional Courts in the Twenty-First Century: Lessons from Bangladesh and India" as the chief guest at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) here.

She said once judiciary was dependent on the government for financial ground. But, her government has separated the judiciary by allocating separate budget for it, she said.

The Awami League government, as well, has enacted a law for the formulation of Election Commission (EC) as it was earlier attached to the Prime Minister's Office, Sheikh Hasina said.

"We've also made the EC completely independent and allocated separate fund for it," she said, adding, "That means, we believe it, and for that purpose, the Awami League government could make it."

Apart from ensuring the independence of the judiciary, the government has made EC independent for the sake of election system so that it could ensure the rights of the people properly.

The prime minister said she wants the people of her country to get justice.

"Like us, they, as if, aren't to be subjected to injustice. So, the rights of getting justice and democratic, economic, social and cultural rights of the countrymen will have to be ensured," she said.

Highlighting initiatives taken by the Awami League government, she said since her government assumed office; they have started implementing different programs so that people get justice.

Referring to the government's announcement to transform Bangladesh into Smart Country by 2041, Sheikh Hasina said, "I want the judiciary to be Smart as well."

She said the government has included an article in the Constitution as per the High Court verdict declaring illegal grabbing of state power a punishable offence.

"By this inclusion, I can say that the basic democratic rights of the people are protected," she added.

She extended her gratitude to the Chief Justice of Bangladesh as she described his various initiatives to make the Judiciary smart.

Sheikh Hasina also thanked the Higher Court for delivering verdict that declared illegal the 5th and 7th amendments of the Constitution done by the military rulers to grab state power through proclaiming martial law.

"It has contributed to the country's socioeconomic advancement ensuring democratic consistency of the country since 2009. It also helped keep continuing stable situation in the country since then," she observed.

She added that this historic verdict of the higher court gave breathing space of the people of the country.

Sheikh Hasina said it is a proven truth that getting justice in people's life and socioeconomic development can only be done when the basic rights of the people are ensured and thus a country can move towards prosperity.

She continued: "By the 15th amendment of the Constitution we have strengthened the democracy."

The head of the government said that Bangladesh has achieved the recognition of developing country which will come to effect from 2026.

"Inshaallah by 2041, we will be able to make country as developed and prosperous Golden Bangladesh to materialise the ideals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," she added.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq spoke at the function as special guest while Indian Chief Justice Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud spoke as guest of honour.

With Bangladesh Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan in the chair, Appellate Division Justice M. Enayetur Rahim delivered the welcome address.

Bangladesh moves forward with ideals of Language Movement: PM

Publish: 08:50 PM, 22 Feb, 2024

Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina today said that Bangladesh is moving forward with the ideals taught by the great Language Movement of 1952.

“No country can progress without ideals. And the Great Ekush (February 21) has taught us this ideology . . . Bangladesh today is moving forward with the ideals, resulting in the change of fate of the people of the country,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina said this while addressing as the chair at a discussion meeting organised by Bangladesh Awami League (AL) on the occasion of Mohan Shaheed Dibosh and International Mother Language Day at the AL office in city’s Tejgaon area.

“The Great Ekush (February 21) taught us not to bow down, it also taught us to walk with our heads high, and to go forward with ideals,” she said.

Paying respect to all the martyrs of the Language Movement (February 21, 1952), the premier urged all to walk worldwide with their heads high.

“Today, we have got our independence only through the spirit that emerged from the Language Movement,” she said, adding, “We have to make this independence meaningful, and it must be carried forward.”

Sheikh Hasina noted that those who wanted to erase the history of the country’s independence distorting the truth will gradually go to hell.

“And the Bangalees will continue to hold their heads high in the world arena with their independent belief and this is the reality,” she added.

AL Presidium Members Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Dr Abdur Razzaque, Advisory Council Member and Cultural Affairs Sub-Committee Chairman Ataur Rahman, Dhaka South City AL President Abu Ahmed Mannafi, Dhaka North City AL President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, Dhaka District AL President Benzir Ahmed and Bangla Academy Director General Poet Mohammad Nurul Huda also spoke.

AL publicity and publication secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap and his deputy Syed Abdul Awal Shameem moderated the discussion.

At the outset, one minute silence was also observed to pay deep tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement.

Mentioning that the government is doing every work in a planned way and properly, the Prime Minister said, “We want to give a better life to the people of this country, and Awami League works with the plan to change the fate of the people further.”

She said that Awami League has earned people's trust, love and confidence because it works for the people, adding, “as a result of which people have elected us again and again through vote”.

Sheikh Hasina said people of Bangladesh witnessed the uplifting of their socio-economic situation in the last 15 years. “All people up to the village-level have seen improvement. The development of any country can’t be possible without following an ideology. And this ideology we learnt from February 21,” she said.

She said the sacrifice in the 1952 Language Movement had taught the nation to move with an ideology without bowing down to anyone.

The premier firmly said none can pull Bangladesh back anymore, adding, “We’ve to go forward with this conviction.”

Pointing at BNP, Sheikh Hasina said now they wanted to remove AL from the power through waging movement and resist the election, but failed.

She said the most fair, free and impartial election was held on January 7, 2024 after 1975.

“Despite making thousands of attempts, spreading false accusation, and carrying out various lobbying at home and abroad, they could not resist the people as they spontaneously cast votes,” she said.

The Prime Minister said larger numbers of young and female voters cast their votes this time.

She said now again they (BNP) are making very big (hollow) remarks that they would topple the government through movement. “Jamaat and BNP are there. Okay, fine. But some leftist parties are also there who would wage movement and make revolution,” she added.

Sheikh Hasina said that there have been many conspiracies to prevent her from assuming power, “but, I have come to power for fifth time”.

Referring to her announcement to build smart Bangladesh, she said that her government had framed Perspective Plan for 2010 to 2021, and formulated another Perspective Plan for 2021 to 2041 to determine how Bangladesh will move forward in the coming days.

“Our young people have to prepare themselves accordingly,” she added.

The Prime Minister said that the greatest joy and achievement prevail not in enjoyment but in sacrifice. “This should be remembered as millions of martyrs have taught us that.”

Mentioning that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also taught it, she said, “So, Bangladesh will move forward with his ideals. No one can pull Bangladesh back. We have to move forward with this motto.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government has been turning Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) into a modern and three-dimensional force adding ultra-modern smart technologies, ships and helicopters to face the 21st century's challenges.

Celebrating Ekushe February and Inspiring The Next Generation to Learn Bangla

February 15, 2015 By Lail Hossain 10 Comments

Celebrating ekushe february | With A Spin

In Bengali, the translation for 21 is “ekush” and “ekushe” means 21st. In Bangladesh, ekushe is also synonyms with 21st February or “Ekushe February”, the celebration of Bengali Language Movement. The day is a celebration to honor those who sacrificed their lives on 21st February, 1952 to advocate the recognition of the Bengali language as an official language of the then dominion of Pakistan. February is also celebrated as International Mother Language Day worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

The Bengali Language Movement was a political movement to advocate the recognition of the Bengali language as an official language and allow its use in government affairs, and demand the continuation of its use as a medium of education, in media, currency, stamps, and to maintain its writing in the Bengali script.

The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh. At the break of dawn, silent mourners from all walks of life walk barefoot and go to the Shaheed Minar (martyrs’ monument, a symbol for International Mother Language Day) to lay flowers out of respect to the martyrs. The celebration also includes a month long book fair a.k.a “Ekushey Boi Mela”. It is the cultural reunion of Bangladesh.

Having migrated to the US during my late teen years, I have been Americanized in many ways and truly value the American culture. However, I deeply value and uphold my Bangladeshi roots – the language, the culture, the traditions as well. As an immigrant parent, I am well aware of the struggle and pressure on children born to immigrant parents and try to balance it out for R. We taught R English before Bengali because we didn’t want her to struggle communicating with the nannies who were taking care of her while we were working. When she turned 2, we started teaching her Bengali and now she is almost fluent in both. Similarly, we want her to take the best from the American culture but also learn and value the roots of her parents; the history, the culture, the traditions that defines us. It is not easy, and it is not going to be.

Teaching kid about 21 february | With A Spin

With that motive, I was looking for ways to easily teach R the Bengali language and its history. It is easy living abroad and not taking the trouble to teach our children a language that was literally fought for or the culture they don’t experience first hand. But it would be baffling to not do so. So what a mother can do to ease the learning experience? A mother can only try. After frantic and failed searches for tools and aids to teach her things that a three and half year old can relate to, I tied myself down and started creating tools she will enjoy.

R loves when we read to her, she loves to draw and color. She loves to sing and play. This workbook about Ekushe February has it all. It is a learning aid that a kid like her will enjoy all the while absorbing a whole lot about the history of the Bangla language. It is one of the many tools I have started to create for her. She is my inspiration. Also, I want to thank my cousin Jayid Alam, who just migrated and  is a freshman in college, for helping me with some of the ideas and editing the workbook.

To my loving and the most amazing three year old daughter who loves to read, learn, draw, color and sing. This is for you and all the other kids to experience learning about the Bengali Language Movement in your own way. I hope learning about the roots of your parents will help excel even more in the culture you are growing up.

Salaam. Do you recommend any learning materials for teaching Bangla to kids? As a first generation Bangladeshi American, my bangla is very poor, but I have always wanted to make sure my children know how to speak and read so that they are connected to their heritage. Do you have anything you could recommend?

  • 10 Lines on Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
  • 10 Lines on Importance of Water
  • 10 Lines on Independence Day in India
  • 10 Lines on Mahatma Gandhi

The image of a child has long been employed for ideological objectives in national cinemas all throughout the globe. The representation of children and childhood in cinema is an open dialogue in the field of children's films. Disney films portrays children in ideal family and societal situations, making Disney films acceptable to the broader public as representations of conventional children and family ideals. Those kinds of films may have an impact on promoting an idealised picture of childhood since millions of people across the world watch them. Similarly, according to Giroux (2004), Disney films combine an ideology of enchantment with an aura of innocence, which is built around children's learning and development of themselves and their world, yet they tend to have traditional views on socio-cultural aspects around them. Children in early British silent films were depicted as self-representation, in contrast to their innocent appearances in Hollywood films. Children can ...

Family Films in Global Cinema: The World Beyond Disney

The last decade has witnessed a resurgence of Marathi cinema and narratives focused on childhood have been one of its dominant strands. In films like Tingya (2008), Shala (2012), Balak Palak (2013), 72 mile ek Pravas (2013), Fandry (2013), and Time Pass (2014) the vulnerabilities of childhood become the matrix of historic transformations in material experience, lifestyle and perception. Interestingly, these films responding to local and regional concerns register the transformation of the region due to neoliberalism. The films' investment in childhood seems to be along two distinct but sometimes intertwining axes of desire. One is the site of the sexual in the child and the other invests in the child's spatial and affective relation with the land of the region, the rural village/ small town on the cusp of a social-economic transformation. With a focus on Fandry, this article examines some of the textual strategies and tropes of this cinematic moment.

Child sexual abuse is a troubling and perplexing problem in any society. With reference to Indian social and cultural system it becomes even more disturbing because of the cultural vacuum around the same. The lack of terminology and unknowingness forces a child to succumb to silence. The article attempts to explore the evolving image of women's representation in mainstream Indian cinema with reference to child abuse. The present paper has emphasized the need for a change in the belief system while discussing the struggle of women who survived child sexual abuse as it's shown in the films. Highway and Kahani2 have been used as the primary source as the strong women characters portrayed in these films reflect changing mainstream Hindi cinema. The conclusion portrays the need to reason the disabling aspects of social and cultural belief system and their role in the development of a healthy society.

Childhood is a notion that has had different meanings in different geographies throughout history. Historian Philip Aries claims that the medieval art did not have childhood imagery, suggesting a lack of a distinct concept of childhood in the language and terms of the Middle Ages. This claim means that childhood is a category emerging with modernity. In the same period, cinema becomes like childhood. Strategies of modernization have shaped both childhood and cinema. This article tries to understand the transformational dynamic of children's images from the first films to the present-day cinema. The story of childhood growth is a journey from innocence to discontent. Because cinema does not see childhood just as a site of social construction. Cinema has the ability and capacity to show the dysfunctions of modern strategies run on childhood, especially by presenting an alternative fact about childhood in particular cinema genres. The article will analyze this transformation with examples from different geographies and different film genres. The key concepts are the metaphoric and metonymic narrative concepts that Kellner and Ryan put forth. The film genres that see childhood as the subject of social construction will be analyzed with the concept of "metaphoric" and the film genres that emphasize the realistic experience of childhood with the concept of "metonymic". The article will be categorised children of Iranian, American, Indian, Italian and French cinema by this terms.

children's day essay in bengali language

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Essay on Bengali Language!

Bengali probably emerged as a separate language around 1000 AD. The beginnings of Bengali literature are to be seen in the songs composed in the llth-12th centuries. The Charyapada (ninth century), a collection of poems, is the oldest known Bengali written form.

The manuscript has 47 verses, written by 23 poets bearing association with various regions of east India. The Natha literature was inspired by the philosophy of the Buddhist Sahajiya cult. In the 14th century Vaishnavism spread over Bengal.

The Middle Bengali literature can be divided into three: Pre-Chaitanya era (15th century) when Vaishnava Padavali by Chandidas and Vidyapati was composed. Chandidas composed his devotional lyrics which deeply influenced the literature. Adaptations of the Ramayana became popular in the 15th century; Kritivasa Ojha’s rendering of the epic is given the same kind of respect in the east as Tulsidas’s Ramacharitmanas gets in the north.

With Manasa Mangal and Chandi Mangal flourished the mangalkauya tradition—long narrative poems extolling the struggle and triumph of a god or a goddess in establishing himself or herself against rivals.

It became a popular literary form after Sanskrit works came to be rendered in Bengali. In the 16th-17th centuries another type of Vaishnava literature developed—biographical in nature, centred round the personality of Chaitanya. The best known work in this style is the Chaitanya Charitamrita by Krishnadasa Kaviraja.

The Chaitanya Charitamrita is a hybrid Bengali and Sanskrit biography that documents the life and precepts of the Vaishnava saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The Chaitanya Charitamrita is the main theological resource for Gaudiya Vaishnava theology. The translation of Mahabharata into Bengali became famous at the time.

Three major kinds of mangalkavya that flourished are Manasamangal, Chandimangal and Dharmamangal. In the Later Middle Ages, the tradition of Shakta Poetry or Shakta Padavali grew The age of mangalkavya has its end with the composition of Bharat Chandra’s Annada Mangal. The Baul tradition emerged as an intellectual icon with Lalan Fakir. The Eastern Bengal ballads and Muslim love songs are an important part of this period.

It was in the nineteenth century that modern Bengali literature came into being. In the development of Bengali prose, the role of the Christian missionaries must be acknowledged. William Carey wrote a Bengali grammar, compiled an English-Bengali dictionary and got the Bible translated into Bengali.

The establishment of the Fort William College at Calcutta in 1800 also contributed to the development of Bengali. But it was Raja Rammohan Roy’s pamphlets and essays on the issues of the day that gave to Bengali prose a forceful and vibrant style.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Akshaykumar Dutta showed the rich potential of Bengali prose and brought a sense of discipline to the use of the language which became chaste and vigorous in their hands.

They standardised the medium, which their younger contemporary Bankim Chandra Chatterjee turned with skill and verve into a creative tool for his novels and stories. Bankim Chandra is considered the father of the modern novel in India, though social and historical novels had been written before him in Bengali, e.g. Pearcy Chand Mitra’s Alaler Gharer Dular which, in fact, anticipated the development of the novel. But Bankim Chandra established the novel as a major literary form in India.

The emotional temperament and lyrical genius of the Bengali found a fitting medium in poetry. Michael Madhusudan Dutt was the pioneer to break out of traditionalism and successfully experiment with naturalising European forms into Bengali poetry.

He is known for his epic in blank verse, Meghanabandah, an unorthodox interpretation of an episode from the Ramayana, besides a number of sonnets.

Calcutta (now, Kolkata) was the scene of the birth of the modern drama in Bengali. The first original play in Bengali was Kulin Kulasarvasva, a social satire on polygamy among the Kulin Brahmins by Pandit Ramnarayan. Madhusudan Dutt too wrote some plays.

Then came Dinabandhu Mitra’s Neel Darpan and Kamale Kamini. Girishchandra Ghose was another notable playwright. Bengali drama played an important role in conveying nationalism and ideas of social change to the common man.

Bengali literature found fruition in the works of Rabindranath Tagore who blended Vaishnava lyricism, the vigour of the folk medium and Western influences to a nicety. After Tagore, Bengali literature continued to offer rich fare.

Two dramatists radically brought about a major change in Bangla theatre. One was Nurul Momen who made the first modern and experimental plays, and is seen as the pioneer of modem Bengali drama, and the other was Bijon Bhattacharya.

Dwijendralal Ray, Jatindramohan Bagchi, Kumud Ranjan Mullick, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Ashraf Ali Khan, Farrukh Ahmad, Jibanananda Das, along with Buddhadeva Bose, made a major attempt to transcend the Tagore legacy.

The new genre of poets focused away from Tagore’s ideological style and adopted themes and philosophies such as Marxism and Freudian interpretation of mind, which were avoided and often criticised by Rabindranath Tagore.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the most popular novelists of the early 20th century whose specialty was exploring life and sufferings of women in contemporary rural Bengal. Famous Bengali novelists of the century include Humayun Ahmed, Jagadish Gupta, Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay (Banophool), Syed Shamsul Haque, Akhteruzzaman Elias, Bimal Kar, Samaresh Basu and Mani Shankar Mukherjee.

Famous short story writers are Rabindranath Tagore, Jagadish Gupta, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay, Rajshekhar Basu (Parasuram), Shibram Chakrabarti, Subodh Ghosh, Narendranath Mitra, Jyotirindra Nandi, Debesh Roy, Satyajit Ray, Ratan Lai Basu, Syed Waliullah, Shawkat Osman, Hasan Azizul Huq and Shahidul Zahir.

Rajshekhar Basu was the best known writer of satiric short story in Bengali literature. He mocked the charlatanism and vileness of various classes of the Bengali society. Bibhutibushan’s Father Panchali and Aranyak are sensitive novels. Tarashankar Bandopadhyay’s Gana Devata and Arogyaniketan are widely read. Another great novel is Padmanadir Maghi by Manik Bandopadhyay. Ashapurna Devi’s Pratham Prathi Shruti got her the Jnanpith Award. Subhas Mukhopadhyay is a noted Bengali poet whose works such as Padatik and Ja Re Kagajeer Nauka are marked by social commitment. He, too, has received the Jnanpith Award.

The Hungry generation (or ‘Hungryalism’) is considered a path-breaking movement in Bengali literature of recent times. The famous poets of the movement are Malay Roy Choudhury, Shakti Chattopadhyay, Benoy Majumdar, Samir Roychoudhury, Falguni Roy, Saileswar Ghose, Pradip Chowdhuri, Subo Acharya, Arunesh Ghose and Tridib Mitra. Sandipan Chattopadhyay, Basudeb Dasgupta, Subimal Basak, Malay Roy Choudhury and Samir Roychoudhury are among the ficiton-writers of the movement.

In 2011 director Srijit Mukherji incorporated the Hungry generation movement into mainstream cinema (Baishe Sraboti) wherein Gautam Ghose portrayed the role of an anti-establishment ‘Hungryalist’ poet.

Prakalpana Movement has been fostering its new genres of Prakalpana fiction, Sarbangin poetry and Chetanavyasism, spearheaded by Vattacharja Chandan, since the late 1960s. It is probably the only bilingual (Bengali -English) literary movement in India mothered by Bengali literature, that has seen participation of well-known international avant-garde writers and artists.

Notable Bengali poets, writers and artists like Vattacharja Chandan, Dilip Gupta, Asish Deb, Bablu Roy Choudhury, Syamoli Mukherjee Bhattacharjee, Boudhayan Mukhopadhyay, Ramratan Mukhopadhyay, Nikhil Bhaumik, Arun Chakraborty and Abhijit Ghosh represent the movement.

The declaration, essay on international mother language day: history, importance and significance.

By: Haque | Words: 500 | 31-01-’23

International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21st to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. This day is a recognition of the importance of mother tongues and the need to protect and promote them. The purpose of this essay is to outline the significance and importance of International Mother Language Day and to explain the challenges and celebrations associated with it.

History of International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day has its roots in the Bangla language movement in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), where in 1952, students demanded recognition of their mother tongue Bangla as one of the national languages of then Pakistan. But the Urdu-speaking ruling group of Pakistan ignored the demands of the Bengali nation and oppressed them. They shot and killed many people including Rafiq, Salam, Barkat, and Jabbar during the language movement procession. However, the language activists did not give up. After two long decades of struggle and finally a bloody war, they liberated their country and established their mother tongue as the state language. People of Bangladesh celebrate the 21st of February as Language Martyr’s Day to pay respect to the martyrs of the 52’s language movement. Finally, in 1999, the United Nations Organization declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day to recognize the importance of all mother languages and to promote linguistic and cultural diversity.
