How the PhD Program Works

Program Overview

Completing your doctorate at Wharton requires 5 years of full-time study. The first 2 years in the program prepare you for admission to candidacy by taking courses, qualifying exams, and starting research projects. In the last few years, you are primarily conducting research full-time including writing and defending your doctoral dissertation.

Admission to candidacy.

You begin by taking courses required for your program of study. All programs requires a preliminary exam, which may be either oral or written.

Some programs may have further requirements, such as an additional exam or research paper. If you enter with a master’s degree or other transfer credit, you may satisfy the formal course requirements more quickly.

The Doctoral Dissertation

Upon successful completion of coursework and passing a preliminary examination, you are admitted to candidacy for the dissertation phase of your studies.

Your doctoral dissertation should contain original research that meets standards for published scholarship in your field. You are expected to be an expert in the topic you choose to research.

You are admitted to candidacy for the dissertation phase of your studies upon successful completion of coursework and passing a preliminary examination, but you can start thinking about and working on research of relevance at any time.

The dissertation process culminates with a “defense,” in which you defend the proposal orally before your dissertation committee.

While working on your dissertation, you interact extensively with Wharton faculty. Together with interested faculty, you create your own research community that includes your dissertation advisor and dissertation committee.

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.

Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

The Harvard Ph.D. in Education trains cutting-edge researchers who work across disciplines to generate knowledge and translate discoveries into transformative policy and practice.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the PhD in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

Anthropology Ph.D. students at the University of Chicago can receive funding for up to eight years of study, assuming they are in good standing at the university. Students typically complete the mentor-matched program, which includes a full-year internship, in five to seven years.

Brown University 's Ph.D. students in computer science have access to "full financial support while completing the degree," plus the option to take classes at nearby schools without incurring additional costs, according to the school's website. In fact, doctoral students in any program at the Rhode Island university are guaranteed five years of financial support, which includes tuition remission, a stipend, health services fees and a subsidy for health insurance.

Georgetown University 's Ph.D. program in computer science provides scholarships and assistantships that cover full tuition at the Washington, D.C., school and include a stipend and health insurance for the first five years. Once enrolled in the program, students must complete the Apprenticeship in Teaching Program and ultimately write and defend a full research dissertation in a seminar open to the public.

Ph.D. students in the computer science or computer engineering program at Washington University in St. Louis receive full tuition support and health insurance. Ph.D. in economics at Emory University (GA)

Students enrolled in the economics Ph.D. program at Emory University typically receive full funding, according to the Georgia university's website. The stipend provided to students is $36,376 per year for five years, starting in fall 2023, and the full tuition scholarship is worth $70,200 per year. Funding for admitted students also includes a $4,370 annual subsidy that covers 100% of a student's cost of health insurance. First-year students have no stipend-related work requirements.

To receive certain aid, students must work 10 hours per week as a graduate teaching assistant. With a heavy research focus, students can expect courses in qualitative, quantitative and historical research, and will have to submit a research proposal for peer review.

Ph.D. in nursing at Yale University (CT)

At Yale University in Connecticut, the School of Nursing offers full funding to its Ph.D. students. They receive a monthly stipend for four years in addition to paid tuition and health care. The program allows students to gain in-depth knowledge in a particular area of study. Every incoming Ph.D. student gets paired with a faculty adviser "whose area of expertise and active research most closely matches with the student’s scholarly interest," according to the school's website.

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program to study psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities are guaranteed full funding for five years as long as they maintain satisfactory performance and degree progress. Anyone who completes the Ph.D. degree requirements at the Indiana university within five years will automatically receive a one-year postdoctoral fellowship via the university's 5+1 Program. Students admitted to Bryn Mawr College 's Ph.D. program in social work receive full tuition waivers and "substantial stipends" toward living expenses. The Pennsylvania college's website says: "Consistent with our model, all Ph.D. students are funded equally, and do not compete for basic financial support during coursework." The program's cohorts typically include only three or four students each year. According to the college, it awarded the first Ph.D. degree in social work in the U.S. in 1920.

Funding is guaranteed for all admitted doctoral students enrolled in the special education Ph.D. program at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. This includes full tuition, a "competitive" monthly stipend and health insurance for up to four years. Students may also be nominated for additional honor scholarships and fellowships. This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Illinois combines coursework in humanities, social science and the visual arts. What to expect from a phd schedule.

Take a look at a current student’s schedule and get the insider perspective from doctoral students and coordinators on what to expect from a PhD schedule.

The life of a PhD candidate can be stressful as you adjust to a rigorous academic and research schedule. Penn and Wharton offer a variety of resources to help support you in the transition to PhD life.

Wharton’s sense of community offers a level of comfort when reaching out to faculty as well as fellow students to help solve problems. Doctoral students and coordinators give the insider view on what to expect from a PhD schedule.

Class and Research First

The first two years of a PhD program are mainly made up of classes and the beginning stages of research. Deborah Small , the doctoral coordinator for the Marketing program , said, “It starts with heavy duty coursework and a lot of specific requirements. At the end of your first year, there are qualifying exams on all the core marketing courses. Second year they still have a lot of coursework to do, but more of that is elective with a focus more on their interests. During those years they’re expected to get started on research.”

In addition to taking classes and getting started with research, the Marketing program requires students to write two papers. The first research paper is due at the end of the second year, the other is due at the end of the third year.

The Real Estate and Business Economics and Public Policy programs run like the Marketing program. Fernando Ferreira , coordinator for the programs, said, “During the first year they complete six core courses. In the second year, the focus shifts to field courses and to independent research. They have two professors advising them in that year.”

After completing the main courses, students shift to conducting independent research. For REAL and BEPP students this means writing three dissertation chapters during the third and fourth years.

Time for Conferences and Seminars

Because coursework is usually completed by the second half of the program, there’s time for students to attend lectures and seminars. Andrea Contigiani , a fifth year student in the Management program, said, “In my fourth year, I usually attended a seminar around lunchtime. Wharton has an incredible seminar series throughout the year, with a good seminar happening almost everyday. Occasionally, I attended other events, like MBA events or speaker series. I then go back to research for most of the afternoon.”

Prof. Small said, “Students are expected to actively participate in seminars and activities. They’re also encouraged to go to academic conferences and try to present their work at those conferences. It is similar to the expectations of being a faculty member, minus teaching.”

Classes take up the majority of the first two years of the programs. When the focus then switches to research, you’re expected to work independently. Sometimes that can be intimidating. You become your own boss, which is an adjustment from being told what to do and when to do it.

Pathology is an integrative discipline that looks simultaneously at the whole organism and its component cells, tissues, and molecules to study the causes and mechanisms of disease. It is a discipline that strives to understand the mechanisms of disease at fundamental levels, and to apply this understanding to improve management of these diseases in the clinical setting. The Pathobiology Graduate Program provides a strong background in pathology and related basic sciences to prepare students for academic, research, teaching, and biotechnology careers.

Program of Study

The Graduate Program in Pathobiology of the Department of Pathology offers a program of study leading to the Ph.D. degree in Pathobiology.

The Program provides students with opportunities to elucidate the mechanisms and origins of human diseases through an integrative approach emphasizing systemic processes based on molecular and cellular pathologic underpinnings. Students are prepared with formalized classroom instruction in all general areas of disease mechanisms and undertake specialized training (including thesis research) one of five programmatic areas: Immunopathology, Microbiology & Infectious Disease, Neoplasia, Neuropathology, Vascular Biology & Hemostasis.

Applicants are not required to designate a specific programmatic area of interest at the time of application or matriculation, and laboratory rotations across multiple disciplines are typical for students in the Program. However, special funding opportunities may be available for applicants with commitment to a particular discipline.

Pathobiology encompasses fundamental and applied studies of the biological basis of disease. Like the discipline of pathology itself, it straddles the traditional basic and clinical sciences. Research in Pathobiology is typically aimed toward the discovery of the basic mechanisms that cause disease with the goal of developing fresh insights leading to improved treatments or preventative measures. Thus, the students in the Pathobiology program are prepared for careers in the translation of basic biological principles to solve specific disease problems.

Classroom instruction is conducted in the lecture, seminar, and conference rooms of the School of Medicine. Student research is conducted in the state-of-the-art research facilities of program faculty. These fully equipped laboratories support studies ranging from molecular, cellular, and physicochemical analyses through whole animal and informatics-based techniques. The Program takes special advantage of its clinical service laboratories and clinical activities to familiarize students with and provide resources for translational research.

Financial Aid

Admission Requirements

Students typically matriculate in July or August. The following 6 key elements for are required for application and ultimately for admission into the Program:

  • a bachelor’s degree from a qualified college or university;
  • your updated CV;
  • coursework with laboratory in inorganic & organic chemistry, general biology, and calculus;
  • official transcripts of undergraduate grades;
  • a minimum of three letters of recommendation; and
  • a one-to-two page personal statement including your research and career goals.

GRE Scores Not Required.   A s of Sept, 2019,  when applying to the Graduate Program in Pathobiology, we no longer  require  the  GRE General or Subject Tests scores , however if taken, applicants are  invited to share their scores.

Underrepresented minority students are strongly encouraged to apply and to contact the program directors for guidance. Personal interviews at Johns Hopkins are preferred.

Vivien Thomas PhD Scholars

The Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI) is a new endowed fellowship program at Johns Hopkins for PhD students in STEM fields. It provides full tuition, stipend, and benefits while also providing targeted mentoring, networking, community, and professional development opportunities. Students who have attended a historically black college and university (HBCU) or other minority serving institution (MSI) for undergraduate study are eligible to apply. To be considered for the VTSI, all application and supplementary materials must be received by  December 2, 2023 .

Procedures for Choosing Rotations and a Thesis Environment:

  • Each student will complete 3 research rotations prior to selecting a thesis laboratory.  A fourth rotation may be completed if desired.
  • Upon starting the rotation, students and their rotation mentors will complete the Rotation Plan form.
  • Upon completion of the rotation, the mentor will provide an evaluation of the student’s work.
  • Students will present their rotation work at the Pathobiology Journal Club or at the annual Pathobiology retreat.
  • The 3 required rotations  must be completed during the first year and a re traditionally completed with Pathobiology faculty members. Outside Pathobiology faculty rotations may been completed, however these must be approved by the program director(s). If a student chooses to undertake their thesis research with an outside faculty member, the faculty member will need to be considered first by the Pathobiology Executive Committee before joining the program faculty.
  • Each research rotation will be about 3 months in length, with the exception of summer rotations.  A full-time summer rotation (July-August) will be about 2 months in length.
  • The student must select a thesis advisor no later than 1 year from the date of admission to the program. **In general, students will not be permitted to conduct their thesis research in a laboratory where they have been previously employed. Any exceptions to this policy will be determined by the Pathobiology Executive Committee.
  • Faculty Advisors Groups: each student, along with a group of other students, will be assigned an faculty advisor during the time period between starting the program and choosing a thesis advisor. The group will meet with AT LEAST once every 4 months. These meetings will be initiated by the group's senior student leader (appointed by the Program). 

Oral Examination

The Graduate Board Oral Examination tests the breadth and depth of the graduate student’s scientific knowledge and readiness to begin thesis research. These exams are administered by the Pathobiology program through an oral examination committee consisting of 3 faculty members. This preliminary oral examination will be scheduled by lottery at the end of the first year meeting with the Program Director.  The exam takes place during October after the student has completed all required first year courses. The exam is required for graduation.

Thesis Advisor and Advisory Committee

After the first year is completed, the student will choose an advisor from the Pathobiology faculty. After completing the Oral Examination for the Ph.D. Degree for the School of Medicine Programs, a Thesis Advisory Committee will be formed to monitor the student’s thesis research progress.  The student, with the consent of their advisor, decides on the composition of the thesis committee. The thesis committee consists of at least three experts in the student’s field of study or related fields. Committee members help with research direction and technical challenges, and oversee the student’s progress until research is complete and the doctorate is awarded.  Students must meet with their Committee at least once per year to review progress. 

All students in their second year and beyond are required to take a one-semester elective course for credit in each academic year. Courses may be taken for a grade or pass/fail. Students may choose a course offered in the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, or on the Homewood Campus subject to approval by the Program Director. 

Translational Rotations (2 required)

The objectives of these rotations are to give graduate students an interactive exposure with the clinical diagnostic dimension of Pathology. Students should learn the fundamental clinical questions, the current state of the technologies to address these questions, and how basic science can be translated to advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Students must complete 2 translational rotations as a graduation requirement. These rotations need not require an experimental project involving bench work. If the student wishes to complete such a project, it should be decided jointly between the student and rotation advisor. 

Departmental Thesis Seminar

Shortly before your submission of graduation materials, you must present your thesis work to the department in a one-hour talk. 

Seminars, Journal Clubs, and Lab Meetings

Graduate students are required to attend the weekly Pathobiology Journal Club Course and all are expected to attend weekly Pathobiology lunch meetings as well as all lab meetings in their mentor/thesis advisor’s departments throughout their training period. Students are encouraged to attend the many seminars presented by invited speakers who are involved in cutting edge research.

Pathobiology Annual Retreat:

The annual Pathobiology Retreat (held in early Fall), from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. includes a series of short research talks by senior students and poster presentations by second-year and beyond students. Attending keynote speaker(s) will deliver a special lecture and faculty members and alumni will discuss their research. All members of the Pathobiology Graduate Program are expected to participate in this event.    

Pathology Young Investigators' Day

The Departmental Young Investigators’ Day (held March/April) provides residents, fellows, and students with the opportunity to present their clinical, basic, or translational research efforts. This activity allows faculty, fellows, residents, and students to learn more about the diverse ongoing research in the Pathology department. All fellows, residents, graduate students and medical students working with a faculty member who holds an appointment in the Department of Pathology or the Pathobiology Program are invited to submit abstracts and present posters at the annual event. 

Graduate Student Association Poster Session

The Graduate Student Association Poster Session is held every year. This gives the students the opportunity to showcase their research to both faculty and peers.

The SOM policy is based on NIH guidelines ( ). Students must receive training that includes a significant small-group component, allowing issues to be openly discussed with fellow students and faculty discussion leaders. A training program should provide at least eight hours of class time -- with at least three hours of face-to-face discussion -- and address at least the following topics:

  • ​The scientist as a responsible member of society
  • Research misconduct
  • Data acquisition and management
  • Authorship and publication practices
  • Mentor and trainee responsibilities
  • Use of animals in research
  • Conflicts of interest
  • Collaborative research
  • Human subjects if applicable

           Degree Requirements:

There are three fundamental requirements for the Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University: dissertation, residence, and oral examination. None of these requirements can be modified or changed without unanimous consent of the schools and the Provost.

  • Dissertation: All Ph.D. students must successfully complete a dissertation in accordance with relevant school and program guidelines prior to degree conferral.
  • Residence: All Ph.D. students must have completed two consecutive semester of full-time study prior to degree conferral.
  • Oral Examination: All Ph.D. students must successfully pass a required oral examination conducted by five faculty members. The oral examination must include the chair and at least one other member from outside the candidate’s home department.

It is university policy that all program and university requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed in 9 years or less from start of the doctoral program. The Doctor of Philosophy Board reviews all candidates for the Ph.D. prior to conferral to ensure that the fundamental requirements for the Ph.D. have been met within the time  frame delineated.

Over about a 5 year period, our trainees achieve a deep working understanding of the biology of human aging and human diseases, as well as state-of-the-art and high-throughput experimental approaches related to human disease. We accomplish our mission through a curriculum and environment that are different and unique . We encourage change, creativity, and out-of-the-box reasoning. The intensive coursework during the first year of training is designed to build a foundation in contemporary molecular, cell and structural biology, signal transduction pathways, neurobiology, genetics and genomics, immunology, and bioinformatics, all filtered through the prism of human pathology and translational medicine. These classes along with 3 lab rotations, and oral presentations based on this work, culminate with the student selection of a thesis lab headed by a faculty member who is accredited for mentor-compliancy by institutional and programmatic review. 

A unique aspect of the program is the inclusion of translational rotations in a clinical pathology setting; these rotations directly reinforce the humanity, compassion, and importance of the student’s research project to the ultimate goal of alleviating suffering caused by human diseases. Most students garner peer-reviewed publications during their training, and some successfully compete for NIH F31 individual training grants. Using coursework, supplemental library-based teaching tools, annual program retreats, as well as weekly journal clubs and discussion, scientific ethics, rigor, reproducibility, transparency and logic, and moral values are inculcated as Kantian categorical imperatives.  The outstanding, interdisciplinary, and diverse programmatic and collaborative faculty and resource-rich environment act as catalysts for students to explore, thrive, and consolidate their novel research to launch their careers. 

Historically, pathobiology graduates are well-trained biomedical scientists and have successfully embraced varied career paths and leadership positions in academia (63%) , industry (17%) , medicine, clinical laboratory medicine, entrepreneurship, business, government, and science writing. The Graduate Program in Pathobiology strives for students to have an important, global impact on the pathologic basis of human disease and health-related research.

The multifaceted world of theatrical performance and expression offers many opportunities for study and advanced research. Undertaking a distance learning PhD in theatre and dramatic arts is an opp ortunity to fully immerse into acting techniques, directing principles, and the broader landscape of stagecraft. Typical UK entry requirements include a relevant undergraduate degree in theatre or a related field and typically, applicants have spent several years working in the profession.

A PhD is a research-based degree; therefore, you’ll also need to submit a proposal for the theme of your work and exploration, and this will form the basis of your course content. Additionally, since the degree is studying remotely, you’ll need to ensure that you have access to the resources needed to contact your academic supervisor and conduct your research.

How Long Does It Take To Get a PhD?

A PhD program typically takes four to seven years, but a variety of factors can impact that timeline.

A PhD, or doctorate degree, is the highest degree you can earn in certain disciplines, such as psychology, engineering, education, and mathematics. As such, it often takes longer to earn than a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

While many PhD programs are designed to be finished in four or five years, the average completion time is much longer when you factor in the time it takes to research and write a dissertation. In 2020, doctoral students took between six and twelve years to complete their PhD [ 1 ]. By comparison, you can complete a master's degree in one to three years.

Let’s explore the requirements of a PhD, what often ends up adding to the length of time, and important factors you should consider when deciding whether it’s the right choice for you.

PhD requirements + general timeline

Doctoral programs typically include taking advanced courses, passing a comprehensive exam (sometimes called "comps"), and producing an original body of research, such as a dissertation. You may also be expected to fulfill a teaching assistantship or research assistantship, both of which are meant to prepare you for a career in academia or research.

PhD timeline

The specifics of a PhD program vary by college and university, but the following estimates give you an idea of what to expect during your time in graduate school:

Year 1: Complete advanced coursework.

Year 2: Complete advanced coursework and begin preparing for your comprehensive exams.

Year 3: Study, take, and defend your comprehensive exams. Begin researching your dissertation proposal.

Year 4: Submit your dissertation proposal to your committee chair, and, once approved, begin working on your dissertation.

Year 5: Finish writing your dissertation and submit for committee approval. Defend your dissertation and apply for graduation.

PhD timelines by focus

Some PhD programs take longer to complete than others. For example, earning a doctorate in a science and engineering field typically takes less time than earning a doctorate in the arts or humanities, according to data from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) [ 1 ]. The list below shows the median length of time it took doctorate students to earn their degree in 2020:

Physical and Earth Sciences: 6.3 

Engineering: 6.8 years

Life sciences: 6.9 years

Mathematics and computer science: 7 years

Psychology and Social Sciences: 7.9 years

Humanities and arts: 9.6 years

Why does it take so long to complete a PhD?

There are a few reasons why it takes more time to complete a PhD compared to other advanced degrees.


Once a doctoral student has successfully passed their comps, they are considered “All But Dissertation” or “ABD.” Yet, the number of students who successfully complete their PhD program remains low—estimates show that nearly 50 percent of students drop out, often after reaching the dissertation phase [ 2 ].

The dissertation phase can often take much longer to complete than the other requirements of a PhD. Researching and writing a dissertation takes significant time because students are expected to make an original and notable contribution to their field.

Assistantship obligations

Teaching and research assistantships are beneficial because they can help pay for a PhD program, but they may also take time away from working on your dissertation. Some students are expected to teach at least one class per semester on top of their other obligations as graduate students.

For universities that reduce the teaching or research load students have as part of their assistantship, the times to completion tend to improve. Humanities students at Princeton University began finishing their degree in 6.4 years (compared to 7.5 years) thanks to the institution's financial support and the reduced number of classes students taught [ 3 ].

Other responsibilities

Doctoral students tend to be older. Graduate students pursuing a PhD in science or engineering were an average of 31.6 years old by the time they earned their degree in 2016, according to the National Science Foundation [ 4 ]. As such, some PhD students may have competing obligations, such as family. If a student’s funding has run out, and they have to find full-time work, it also may affect the time they can dedicate to writing their dissertation.

Is a PhD right for you?

People pursue PhDs for various reasons: Some want a job that requires the degree, such as teaching at a university, while others want the challenges or intellectual engagement that a graduate program offers. Identifying why you want to earn a PhD can help indicate whether it’s your best choice.

If your career aspirations don't require a PhD, it might be better to focus on gaining professional experience. Or if you're interested in an advanced education, a master's degree may be a better option. It takes less time to complete than a PhD and can lead to more career opportunities and larger salaries than a bachelor's degree.

Benefits of a PhD

The primary advantage of earning a PhD is your increased demand and marketability in the workforce. In 2018, less than 5 percent of the United States population had a doctorate degree, compared to about 48 percent with a bachelor's degree and 21 percent with a master's degree, according to the US Census Bureau [ 5 ]. As a member of this elite group, the potential for advanced roles, promotions, or pay raises may be greater.

Even before you have a degree in hand, working toward a PhD gives you opportunities to hone valuable skills , including writing, research, and data analysis. Furthermore, completing a PhD program can demonstrate to potential employers that you have specialized knowledge and the fortitude to finish such an advanced degree.

Costs of a PhD

Beyond the time they take to complete, PhD programs can be expensive. The average cost of a PhD program in the United States is just under $100,000. At some schools, the cost of a PhD can exceed $200,000 [ 6 ]. While many institutions offer funding support in the form of assistantships or scholarships, many PhD students still graduate with student loan debt. In 2021, the average student loan debt for PhD was $159,625 [ 7 ].

Another factor to consider is the loss of income you might incur while you're working toward your degree. Some graduate students accept teaching or research assistantships to help fund the cost of their program, but these may not pay as much as full-time positions. Working on your education may also mean pausing the professional experience you’d gain in the workforce—and potentially losing out on promotions and raises. However, it’s worth noting that graduate degree holders earn much more over the course of their lifetime than bachelor’s degree holders, according to the US Social Security Administration [ 8 ].

Set yourself up for success

A PhD is a major accomplishment. As you think about your long-term goals and whether a PhD will help you achieve them, it's important to understand ways you can set yourself up for success. According to the University of Georgia, success in a PhD program often means [ 9 ]:

Understanding the demands and expectations of the program

Receiving adequate program orientation

Getting support from peers and faculty

Feeling a sense of belonging as a member of an academic community

These conditions underscore the importance of choosing the right program and school to fit your personal and professional goals. Take time to research the ways your potential institution offers financial support, mental health support, and career placement support, among other program features.

An advanced degree can be a lucrative credential. You can earn your master’s in a number of in-demand fields from top universities on Coursera. Earn a degree in computer science , business , management , or public health , all while enjoying greater flexibility than an in-person degree program tends to offer. Earning your master's can also help you discern whether a PhD makes sense for your larger objectives.

MSW Curriculum Designs

The MSW degree is conferred after satisfactory completion of the prescribed requirements that provide specialized understanding of methods and processes in Social Work practice. The minimum requirements for advanced standing students are 45 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The minimum requirements for all other students are 60 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0. To be applied toward a degree, graduate credits must be earned within the past five (5) years. A letter grading system is utilized. Students choose a level of intervention or mode of practice as a major area of concentration, as well as a field of practice. This choice of concentration is supported by a foundation curriculum, fields of practice, and field education. Specific areas of concentration are subject to changes.

The purpose of the fields of practice concentration is to provide a knowledge base in the student's chosen area of specialization in social work. The courses examine policies, programs, and services; two semesters are required. The fields of practice include: criminal justice, social gerontology, mental health, social work in health care settings, family and child welfare, and displaced populations.

Supervised Field Instruction is provided for students in a wide range of agencies and organizations covering the fields of practice listed above. The educational experience takes place in a large number of approved field settings on a concurrent field instruction methods model.

Howard University’s Masters of Social Work Program and its Online MSW program are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation.  


Howard University School of Social Work offers an Advanced Standing Program for Graduates of Accredited Baccalaureate Social Work Programs. This three-semester program requires forty-five (45) credit hours for the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Four semesters and 60 credit hours are normally required. Students who are admitted to the advanced standing program must meet the following requirements:

  • Degree from a baccalaureate social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  • Baccalaureate degree earned within four (4) years of application, admission and enrollment in the MSW degree program

Overall “B” average for undergraduate work

Grades of “B” or better in social work core foundation courses:

  • Social Work Practice Methods

Field Education

  • Social Work Research
  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment
  • Social Welfare Policy and Services

The supplemental advanced standing program application can be found  here . Applicants who meet the requirements for the Advanced Standing Program will be granted advanced standing status upon formal financial enrollment in the MSW degree program.

Students may choose electives from any of the following options:

  • Courses in direct service, community organization or social service management concentrations or fields of practice concentrations which are not required for their chosen majors
  • From the list of general electives in the social work curriculum; and 
  • From course offerings of other schools or colleges in the University or from the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Courses should be chosen in consultation with the student's advisor.

Part-Time Enrollment

Part-time enrollment is available each semester with evening classes scheduled that cover foundation curriculum content. Under the part-time option, students are permitted to develop an individualized part-time course of studies with their advisers or they may choose the Planned Part-Time Program as recommended by the School. The Planned Part-time Program options are:

Plan 1 : The usual full-time, two year program is distributed over a three to four year period, enabling a student to complete the degree requirements in four years.

Plan 2 : A student completes half the degree requirements, 30 hours in full-time enrollment, and 30 hours in part-time enrollment, over a three year period.

Field Instruction is an integral part of the MSW program. It is the class that takes place at an agency site and is the practical learning component of the curriculum. This "off campus classroom" experience requires the first year student to spend 16 per hours per week and the second year student to spend 20 hours per week at an agency in the Greater Washington, DC metropolitan area. The Office of Field Education chooses these sites. This course carries 3 credit hours per semester and accounts for over 1/3 of the 60 credits required for the completion of the MSW degree.

The field instruction program also requires a mandatory orientation for all entering students and ongoing field education seminars, which are structured as on campus classes. Student experiences at their field education sites are often the most memorable ones as they matriculate through the MSW program. The field education opportunities are diverse and are supervised by licensed social work practitioners. These experiences are exciting, challenging and provide opportunities for professional development in a practical sense. Goals of field education include but are not limited to the: (1) identification with the profession, (2) integration of classroom knowledge with practical experiences, (3) laboratory experience to increase and strengthen social work skills, (4) exposure to different social work settings, (5) opportunity to determine a specialty in an of area of practice, and (6) opportunity to learn about social and economic justice, and advocacy.

Field education complements the curriculum by providing opportunities to explore, expand, and explain the "Black Perspectives as articulated in our school's mission, vision and principles. Applicants choosing the MSW program should consider these opportunities for professional growth when planning their entry into the program. The Office of Field Education along with other faculty will assist students in their field experiences to insure that each student receives an appropriate learning experience.

4 Excellence PhD positions 

Major responsibilities We are looking for up to four highly motivated and skilled graduates interested in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The  selected candidates are awarded with a PhD position, which they can place at any Nano research group at Chalmers and with which they coordinate their specific PhD program. This is the nineth in a yearly recurring call. These positions are special in the sense that most PhD student positions at Chalmers are announced by a specific research group, funded by a specific research project. However, with an Excellence PhD student position you have your own funding, which of course gives you far more freedom in choosing both research group and research project. A PhD exam in Nano is the perfect start for your career, whether you aim at academic research at the highest level, advancing technology and business ideas in major companies or spinning off your own idea into a start-up company. Your major responsibilities are to pursue your doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours. Qualifications The selection is based on three criteria: 1) Your MSc and BSc grades 2) A two-page written reflection on your background and your motivation to pursue a PhD. Specifically motivate your interest in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology and in pursueing your PhD at Chalmers. This letter may contain a description of your current MSc project and/or future research interests as well as of your personal qualities. 3) Your perfomance at an interview to which we expect to invite the top 8 candidates.
