Water is the most important and valuable natural resource on Earth. It sustains all life. There is no life without water. Water is not only important for human beings but for the entire ecosystem. Without enough water, the existence of humans, as well as animals, is next to impossible. After fresh air, water is the second most important natural resource for the survival of any living being. 

Water is necessary for the survival of each living creature on this planet, be it a small worm, plant, or full-grown tree.  Animals and plants  cannot survive without water. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available  is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water. 

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance. Therefore, water conservation is important to save life on this planet.

The basic use of water is drinking, bathing, agriculture, irrigation, hospitality, factories, etc.

Sewage waste that is dumped into the rivers is making the water unsuitable for drinking and washing causing several water-borne diseases like cholera, jaundice and typhoid.  

Use of plastics and disposing them carelessly in the water bodies are affecting aquatic life and further disturbing the entire ecosystem.

Global warming is another major reason for the scarcity of water on earth. According to several types of research, because of global warming, the world will face more stress for water scarcity till the year 2050.

 We now need to be aware of the depletion of fresh water and take adequate    measures to stop this. 

Saving Water: Need of the Hour

Many places face extreme water scarcity due to extremely bad weather conditions, leading to less rainfall and groundwater depletion. In other parts of the world, groundwater is either unusable or overused. As the world's population is growing, so increase in industries and globalisation, causing groundwater to be overused and resulting in water scarcity.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that many people on this planet don't have access to clean and fresh drinking water. These situations are becoming worse day by day, and we need an immediate plan to control this situation. Various collective measures have to be taken by every individual on this planet and the government of every country to control water scarcity.

Government should impose some strict rules for the conservation of water. The government and the citizens have to take the initiative to create awareness and promote the “conservation of water.” One such initiative taken by the Modi government in India was “JANSHAKTI FOR JALSHAKTI.” This programme began as a means of working toward a brighter future.

The Punjab government contributed to saving water resources by avoiding waterlogging and fixing the drain  leakage.

The Rajasthan government has taken the initiative to construct small ponds, which  helped the local people of Rajasthan in many ways.

These states are an inspiration, and others should also take a step forward to conserve and clean the water, water bodies, and groundwater.

We should make provisions to store rainwater on rooftops and reuse the water for household purposes.

Bigger Communities and farmers should adapt to the practice of Rainwater harvesting. 

The industrial waste should be treated properly instead of dumping it into rivers.

We should stop using plastics and dispose of them in an adequate way.

We can make people aware about water problems by means of social campaigns and other ways.

 We should educate our children about water saving from an early age.

This was made possible by understanding their water availability and use pattern. Through this, we were able to make them aware of the various points where water wastage occurs and methods to prevent such wastage. The campaign helped families optimise their water usage.

Introduction .

Water scarcity is a universal problem.  So it is the responsibility of all the citizens of our planet to be jointly deal with it and save water.  We need to conserve water not only for ourselves but also for our future generations.

The most precious gift of nature to humanity is water.  Water can also be called ‘life’ because life on the earth can never be imagined without water.

 Earth is called a “blue planet.”  Because it is the only known planet in the universe where there is a sufficient amount of usable water, about 71 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water.  Most of the water of the earth is found in oceans and oceans.  That water cannot be used due to the excessive presence of salt.  The percentage of potable water on earth is meager.

In some parts of the earth, people have to travel long distances to collect pure potable water.  But in other parts of the earth, people do not understand the value of water.  Wastage of water has become a burning issue on this planet.  A large amount of water is regularly wasted by humans.

We need to prevent wastage of water to avoid this danger.  Awareness should be spread among people to save water from being wasted.

Uses of water

1. use of water in irrigation.

The most important use of water is irrigation. Water is used in growing crops. If crops are not irrigated, it will not grow, and without water, irrigation is not possible.

2. Use of water in industries

In lots of industries like the steel industry, chemicals, fertilizers, electricity, textiles, petrochemicals and paper, food, Mining, etc. water is used in massive quantities for cooling purposes, making of power, cleaning purposes, bonfire armor and remaining but not to keep a record appearance of cooling.

3. Need of water for animals and for recreation

Water is essential for fish, flora and fauna, and other activity facilities. The actions like swimming, boating, fishing are necessary open-air recreational actions that are unmanageable without water.

4. Use of water in the household 

Water is used in various household activities like washing, cooking, cleaning, bathing, drinking, toilet, showering, laundry, etc.

5. Use of Water as Suspension and Solvent

The dissolving process is used to wash things daily, such as human bodies, clothes, floors, cars, food, and pets.  Also, human waste is transported to the sewage system only through water.

In industrialized countries, most water is used as a cleaning solvent.  Water can facilitate the chemical processing of wastewater.

Need to save water

Let’s see why we need to save water. First of all, humans can live without other things in their life, but he cannot live without oxygen, water, and food. Water is the most important of these three valuable things.  We have 71% water on our earth, we all know, but only 2% of water is worth drinking. This part is being used by one billion people every day. It is also estimated that by 2025 due to water shortage will be 3 Billion people will suffer. Therefore, if we save water, then tomorrow and today, this problem can be solved.  For this, we have to make water safe from today itself and prevent it from going waste.

 Many ways to save water

• One should always use a small glass for drinking water. It is seen that water is left in the glass while drinking water.  The small glass will save water.
•  If there is water left in the glass, it should be put in pots instead of throwing it.
•  Similarly, water left after washing vegetables should also be put in pots, etc.
•  The basket should not always be opened completely. Opening the whole basket is more water waste.
•  The bucket should be used to wash any other means of going to the car.
•  Bathing should be done with the bucket instead of using the shower.
•  If there is leakage of the basket, it should be repaired immediately. If it is not able to cure it quickly, then keep the bucket, etc. under it.
•  If possible in trees and plants, then water should be poured at night time, because by pouring water during the day, the water evaporates and flies away at night.
• In the washing machine, clothes should be washed only after a small amount of washing is collected.
• Wherever the leak leaks, get it fixed immediately.  Otherwise, keep a bucket or bowl under it and then use that water.
• Use a low power washing machine. It saves water and reduces electricity.  Instead of washing a few clothes in a washing machine, wash them every day.
•  Instead of water pipes in plants, use a watering can, very little water is used.  Up to 1000 liters of water is used in 1 hour from the pipe, which is a complete water loss.  If possible, pour the washing water on the pods.
•  Get a water meter in the house.  According to the amount of water you use, its bill will come.  While giving the bill, you will understand how much you have wasted and then take care of the front.
•  While extracting hot water from the geyser, the first cold water comes in it, which we throw away.  Do not do this. Fill cold water in a separate bucket, then hot water in another.  You can use this water elsewhere.
• Too much water is used in the flush, so put a flush in which the water force is less.
•  Always keep the drains clean, because when it is choked, a lot of water is shed to clean it.  So keep cleaning beforehand.
•  Plant trees so that it rains well and fills the river drains.
•  Water should be protected from contamination

Save water initiative

Through the initiative, we can create awareness among the people regarding water saving. By this people will understand the importance of water. They will understand the consequences that can be created after a water shortage. An initiative can help in the conserving of water.

Thus water provides life on earth for us and other beings. Water is the gift given to us by God.  Without water, you cannot even imagine life on earth, so saving water is needed for sustainable development.

Water is life. Chemically defined as containing two molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen i.e. H2O

How much is the water content of this planet? Glancing a few statistics we get to know:-

• Earth is comprised of 70% water and 30% land.
• But quiet surprisingly the amount of usable or drinkable water is only 2.5%. Rest is present in the oceans and seas in the saline form.
• Even in that 2.5% only 1% is accessible and the rest of it maximum is trapped in ice caps and in the glaciers of Arctic and Antarctic region.

Ironically just like the earth a major portion of human body is comprised of water. Water fuels all the physical activities of human body.

• Human body is comprised of 50-65% water.
• amount of water in infant is much higher, averaging to 75-80% dropping to 65% by one year of age
• Body needs to maintain this water content equilibrium, if unbalanced it will result in dehydration, fall in blood pressure, difficulty in breathing due to lack of air dilution and finally the person might black-out.

Water is a renewable source of energy. Renewable resources are those resources which can never end in other words which can be replenished. Solar energy, Wind energy are other such examples. Water available in the oceans is available in infinity.

But all of it is saline water filled with impurities. Portable water i.e. water that is fit for drinking and is free from impurities but it is a nonrenewable source. Nonrenewable resources are those resources which cannot be replenished. Once they get over they are permanently over.

Water can be categorized into a few types depending on its mineral content, drinkable quality and uses.

• Portable water- contains no harmful germs or microorganisms. Contains minerals. Usually used for drinking purposes.
• Purified water- less purified but contains no microorganisms or harmful chemicals. Mineral content is medium to high. used for household cleaning purposes
• Distilled water- also called pharmaceutical water. Contains no germs, no microorganisms, and no minerals. It is usually very blank or flat in taste.
• Spring water- it is the unpurified form of water. It contains germs, micro-organisms and minerals. It might also contain small rocks and algae. It is unfit for drinking.

Water can be tested with some of its physical qualities like:-

Water is precious. We should save it to the utmost extent that we can. Here are some ways by which we can save water:-

• Turn off tap while brushing your teeth.
• Fix the leaks. Be it drain or pipe, bucket or tap fix it as soon as you encounter one.
• Choose efficient fixtures. Water saving fixtures, intelligent bathrooms is now setting new trends.
• Older shower heads can use as much as 5 gallons of water per minute.So take short showers.
• Use wastewater or gray water from the bath, washing machines or dish washing on the garden.
• Dual flush units have been quiet efficient nowadays to conserve water. We should all convert our toilet flush units to dual flush system.

Now we have stated the usefulness of water but coming to its degradation we see that this valuable resource is finishing fast. A time may come that there won’t be a drop left to quench our thirst. What are we gifting our future generations? Is this the world that we are developing and innovating for, where wars will be fought for water?

Along with water, food chain is also linked. Farmers can’t grow crops it the crops are not well irrigated. But if water is not available how are they supposed to grow food? Hence along with water comes in famine, food deficiency and malnutrition.

Maximum water that melts from the ice caps streams and goes into the seas through the rivers. Freshwater sources are limited. Ponds, lakes, rivers are our only sources of freshwater.

What about the creatures that survives in freshwater? Fishes, shrimps, otters, squids etc. are some of the freshwater creatures. There are secondary predators who survive on them. If primary creatures (ones that form the base of the food chain) die then the higher organisms cannot survive.

The basic of all primary organisms are plants. Plants need water to go through photosynthesis. If water is not available in adequate quantity they will shrivel up and eventually die.

If plants die there will be oxygen deficiency. Life on this planet will cease to exist. Not only have that plants transpired water vapour which cools down the surrounding atmosphere. Temperatures will rise up if the vegetation cover reduces.

Hence we have to follow a simple equation

So it’s high time that we straighten our chairs, sit up and do something to save this valuable resource. Every system on this planet has a threshold.

Save water in daily use Essay: According to a United Nations report, by 2050 about 66 to 70% of the world population will live in cities. Presently the urban population of India is about 461 million people and it is growing at the rate of 2.3% every year. These cities contribute 63% to the Indian GDP but urban management and disaster proofing became an important issue for these urban settlements.

Need of urbanisation-

Urbanisation is required to address many social and economic issues like-

• It develops the social infrastructure of an area and leads to a better lifestyle and outcomes for the population.
• Urbanisation involves the creation of health infrastructure and it ensures the general availability of healthcare services which results in improvement of health outcomes.
• It also reduces the social divisions in the society as the importance of caste identity decreases with urbanisation.
• The rate of poverty is lower in urban areas as compared to the rural areas.
• It helps in government generation and creation of industries.
• It also leads to the development of digital infrastructure through internet connectivity and of digital media.
• Better urban planning and development also generates investor interest in the nation.

Challenges with urbanisation-

But there are many challenges associated with urbanisation especially from an environmental and disaster management perspective. Like-

• Infrastructural problems- there is a large-scale migration from rural areas to urban areas which is increasing pressure on the urban resources and increasing its vulnerability for any type of disasters. Nearly 17% of the Indians live in slums in the urban areas. Such situations increase cases like fire accidents, building collapse etc.
• Environmental issues- Due to less adoption of public transport the high income individuals are buying more private vehicles which is the leading cause of traffic jams and air pollution in urban settlements. The rapid growth of inadequate and poorly planned expansion of cities makes the urban populations vulnerable to the effect of climate change. These areas become more vulnerable to flash floods, man made earthquakes etc.
• Reducing green cover- the rapid and unplanned growth of cities is leading to large scale deforestation and concretisation of the urban settlements. It not only degrades the air quality of the place but also hampers the natural geological cycle of the environment. Because of this, natural events like coastal floods, cyclones etc get aggravated. There is an increase in the number of deaths because of heat waves and cold waves.
• Water issues- according to a report by the Asian development Bank nearly 50% of India’s total land area will face a water deficit by 2030. There is an increase in drinking water crisis in urban cities and also an increase is witnessed in water borne diseases. Because of large scale extraction of groundwater and less seepage and replenishment through rainfall urban areas are becoming more and more water deficient. Many of the times this situation leads to droughts and famines because of less availability of water for agricultural production and crop failures.
• Wildlife- because of large scale urbanisation and deforestation the wild animals are devoid of their natural habitat. Because of this there is an increase in the number or cases of human animal conflict. Numerous deaths are reported every year because of man animal conflict.
• Industrial issues- because of excessive pressure on natural resources most of the industrial settlements operate in a compromised situation regarding human safety. In most of the cases safety measures are not taken properly which is the leading cause of industrial accidents and death.
• Health issues- in urban areas and the slums surrounding the urban areas healthcare management is an important issue. For example in the Covid 19 pandemic numerous deaths were reported from dharavi slums. The major reason behind that was poor living conditions and no social distancing practised in the congested slum areas. This is also an increase witnessed in the cases of heart and respiratory ailments because of the poor environment and lifestyle conditions.
• Social unrest- because of deeper penetration of digital media there are increasing number of incidents of false news which is a major reason of incidents like mob lynching, social tensions etc.

Disaster management measures in urban areas-

• Urban planning- all the urban settlements should be developed in a planned manner while considering sustainability and resource management as a top priority. Disaster resilience should be included in all modern infrastructure development. Renewable sources of energy should be used for addressing the ever increasing energy requirements and all the 3 R’s i.e. reduce, reuse and recycle should be implemented to reduce the ecological footprint of the human race.
• Coastal regulations- the coastal regulation norms should be implemented to reduce the stress on coastal districts and any kind of man and material loss due to cyclones. Regulated fishing activities should be permitted to ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems.
• Pollution regulations- strict measures like banning high pollution vehicles, building demolition norms, adoption of renewable sources of energy etc. should be adopted to keep a check on the rising pollution levels. Technological innovations like Pusa decomposer to deal with paddy straw, rotavators etc should be adopted for sustainable agriculture.
• Green cover- urban forestry and afforestation measures should be promoted to maintain a required forest cover in urban areas. Miyawaki techniques of urban forestry should be promoted to encourage backyard forestry.
• Disaster resilience measures- disaster resilience measures like fire proofing, emergency exits, early warning systems etc should be inculcated to minimise the loss in case of any natural or man made disaster.
• Training and awareness- the national disaster response force should be trained well and must be equipped with the latest technological equipment to deal with any contrary situation. More focus should be on prevention and prediction models of disasters and early response.
• Healthcare- government should increase expenditure on the health care services up to 2.5% of the GDP. Primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services should be extended to the rural sections of the society also.
• Infrastructure development- there should be a focus on infrastructure development in rural areas to decrease the rural to urban migration. Industries should be established for employment generation in remote areas.

For the Colorado River and beyond, a new market could save the day

The Colorado River, “the lifeblood of the West,” is in trouble. Decades of overuse and drought have sharply reduced its water supply, threatening an ecosystem that supports 40 million people and 5.5 million acres of farmland in nearby states and parts of northern Mexico.

Steep cutbacks in water use are critical. But the seven states that rely on the Colorado River can’t agree on how much less each of them needs to take over the long run, in large part because it’s not entirely clear who holds what legal rights to the river and who should get priority over others to its available water. If the states can’t agree, the federal government is reportedly threatening to make the hard choices for them.

Paul Milgrom , the Shirley R. and Leonard W. Ely, Jr. Professor in Humanities and Sciences in Stanford’s Department of Economics and a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research ( SIEPR ), has encountered intractable problems like this before. In 2020, he won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his pioneering work creating markets for goods and services that can’t be sold in traditional ways.

Water management, he says, is ripe for a market fix — not just for the Colorado River Basin but around the world as water shortages, made worse by climate change, become a defining issue of the 21st century. It’s no longer enough to leave decisions around water use up to federal, state, and local governments alone.

“We are trying to meet a 21st century set of challenges with 20th century technology and 19th century laws,” says Milgrom, who is also a professor, by courtesy, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) and at the Department of Management Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering. “What we have, fundamentally, is a market design problem.”

Milgrom is part of an interdisciplinary Stanford team — led by Billy Ferguson , a PhD student in economics at the GSB and a former SIEPR undergraduate research fellow — that has developed an elaborate plan for how new markets for trading water could overcome key policy challenges around water allocation while providing incentives to high-volume users to find ways to do more with less.

Milgrom and Ferguson recently highlighted their proposal in a working paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Their use case is California, one of the Colorado River Basin’s biggest stakeholders and whose system for divvying up surface water, which comes from rivers and streams, is especially complex and opaque.

Much of their blueprint is drawn from Milgrom’s work a decade ago helping the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) overcome obstacles in delivering more radio wave frequencies to wireless companies so they could meet exploding consumer demand for mobile services.

Milgrom led a team of experts in economics and computer science through his company, Auctionomics, in the creation of a voluntary market for trading a new type of radio spectrum license, which is credited with enabling mobile communication as we know it, today. The two-part auction process he helped engineer so that the FCC could make those trades possible also delivered $20 billion in total to the radio and TV operators that gave up their old licenses and another $10 billion to the U.S. Treasury.

Milgrom says there are lessons from the 2017 Broadband Incentive Auction that apply to water scarcity in the United States and around the world.

Water rights are broken

As a second-year PhD student in 2021, Ferguson was already interested in water scarcity when he took Milgrom’s market design course and thought that lessons from the FCC’s broadband fix could apply to water. His class project on California’s convoluted system of water rights caught Milgrom’s attention and they started talking about working together. Ferguson then enrolled in a water law course taught by Barton “Buzz” Thompson , a Stanford Law School professor and water rights expert who had also been thinking about the potential role of markets. Thompson is also the faculty director of the Water in the West program led jointly by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Bill Lane Center for the American West.

“I really need to get Buzz and Paul in the same room,” Ferguson recalls thinking. With Thompson on board, the team pressed ahead.

At its core, their idea for a water market starts with creating a new type of property right — one designed to overcome many of the drawbacks with current policies. California, for instance, has a “first come, first served” approach to surface water in which the earliest rights holders — among them, farms and ranches dating 100 or more years ago — have been given priority to rivers and streams over the water-hungry entities that came later, notably coastal cities like Los Angeles and San Diego.

California also has a “use or lose it” provision that requires rights holders to consume their yearly allotment or surface water or risk getting less water in the future. They can technically sell any excess water to other users, but in practice, it’s really hard to do, according to Ferguson: Sellers first have to show that no one downstream from where the water would otherwise go — a phenomenon known as “return flow” — is harmed.

“The system is set up in a way that you have every incentive to use your entire allocation and no incentive to conserve,” Ferguson says.

Going all in with econ

Billy Ferguson was part of the inaugural cohort of undergraduate research fellows at SIEPR. He learned, as a sophomore at that time, about the power of economic tools and data-backed research and never looked back. Today, his PhD work with advisor Paul Milgrom boldly introduces a novel approach to a longstanding issue over the allocation of water rights.

A solution designed for optimal flexibility

A more efficient approach, write Ferguson and Milgrom in their working paper , would be to establish a new property right aimed at delivering water to those who need it most and are willing to pay for it. Among other features, this new right would be based on how much water gets consumed, not diverted, and adjust as precipitation levels change from one year to the next.

This new water market, Ferguson says, would give rights holders incentives to save water — maybe by switching to low-water crops or installing more efficient water treatment systems — and sell off what they don’t need without damaging downstream users. And because water would then be a financial asset, Ferguson and Milgrom say farmers and other rights holders would have easier access to loans or other capital to pay for investments in water-saving technologies.

To kickstart the market, in which participation would be voluntary, the Stanford team is borrowing another page from the radio spectrum playbook: a one-time auction in which governments, in a process known as a “reverse” auction, first buy back water rights from those who are willing to give them up in exchange for the new right. In a subsequent “forward” auction, governments would sell the new water rights to the highest bidders, who would then be free to privately trade their entitlements going forward.

“Our whole approach is to ensure a level of flexibility in allocating water that’s needed but currently missing,” Ferguson says.

Government, he adds, also has a critical role to play in adopting policies to protect vulnerable populations. This includes, for example, limiting how much farmland can be fallowed in pursuit of water profits so that local communities aren’t impacted by job losses and other economic fallout.

Why the timing is right

Milgrom and Ferguson aren’t harboring any illusions: As the Colorado River impasse shows, water scarcity is rife with political, economic, and technological challenges.

But they are also optimistic that their vision for a water market will gain traction — in large part because there’s an urgent need to figure out how to make better use of dwindling water supplies.

“There’s both pressure and possibility,” says Milgrom, just like there was when he took on the challenge of freeing up radio spectrum for wireless companies. And like then, technology has reached the point where water supplies can be measured in new ways and with enough accuracy to give users confidence in their ability to get the water they need.

“There’s every reason to think this can work,” he says. “While it won’t reverse climate change or make it rain, it would go a long way toward providing long-run water resilience.”

The biggest roadblock, says Milgrom, is the politics around water — at the federal, state, and local levels. This is one reason why Milgrom sees introducing water markets as an even bigger problem to solve than reallocating radio spectrum.

The challenge is also deeply personal for Milgrom. “I’m 75 years old,” he says. “If I’m lucky, I have one really big project left in me and I’d like this to be it.”

Millions of people on Monday will continue the tradition of experiencing and capturing solar eclipses, a pursuit that has spawned a lot of unusual gear.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.
