Top 7 Ways to Fix Google Meet Audio Not Working

Major IT companies, such as Twitter and Spotify, are encouraging employees to work from home . Google is already on board with Google Meet software, and sensing the current trend, the search giant made the service free for all . It has quickly become the go-to video conferencing tool at GT. The audio issues on the admin side can interrupt the ongoing Google Meet meeting. Something that’s not ideal for the overall software experience. There can be many reasons behind the behavior.

1. Check Audio Before Meeting

Google Meet allows you to check the audio and video before joining a meeting. You can tap on the Check audio and video option and select the default PC/Mac speakers for a smooth meeting.

2. Check Computer Audio

Because of the mute button on the Apple MacBook, you might have hit it by mistake. Sometimes I use the mute button on the keyboard to quickly silence the sound. MacBooks don’t display the LED indicator showing the mute button it on.

You can forget to unmute it before the Google Meet meeting. Press the F10 key and make sure that you have unmuted the sound on your device.

3. Select Device Speakers from Google Meet Settings

Google Meet allows you to change the default speakers for the meeting. If you are using your phone as a webcam or connected to some third-party speakers, you need to make sure that you have selected a relevant Google Meet audio accessory.

Let me share what happened to me. You can use iPhone as a webcam on Google Meet with the EpocCam software. For that, you can download the relevant drivers and set up the service. While setting up, change the Audio Settings on Google Meet from MacBook Speakers to EpocCam device.

The next time when I tried to conduct the meeting on Google Meet, it remembered my last settings and tried to use EpocCam instead of MacBook speakers for audio. When I didn’t use the EpocCam app, I couldn’t hear audio from the other side. So I had to revert to MacBook speakers from the Google Meet Settings > Audio to fix the issue.

4. Disable Bluetooth

You might have used Bluetooth on your PC or Mac to connect headphones or TWS (True Wireless Stereo). Most users forget to turn off the Bluetooth after use. The next time you compose the Google Meet meeting, it might use the Bluetooth function and connect to a paired device.

Some TWS also get switched when the battery case runs out of juice. In such cases, you won’t be able to hear audio from your side. Make sure that you have disabled the Bluetooth on your side, and it’s not connected to any third-party Bluetooth accessory.

5. Make Sure That The Microphone Is Working on Other Side

The audio is working perfectly fine on your side. The issue might be from the other side. The Google Meet attendees might be having microphone issues on their side. You can kindly ask them to fix the microphone so that you can hear them during the Google Meet meeting.

6. Fix Audio Drivers

The audio/speaker issue might be due to the corrupt drivers on your PC. You should update the audio drivers on your Windows PC. Follow the steps to update them on your PC.

Step 1: Tap on the Windows button and type device manager.

Step 2: Hit enter, and it will open the device manager.

Step 3: From the Audio Input and Output option, you will find the Intel drivers and the Realtek microphone responsible for using your phone’s microphone as the default microphone on video apps. Right-click on the microphone and select update drivers.

Step 4: Scroll down and go to Sound, Video, and Game controllers.

Step 5: Right-click on the audio drivers and update them (Realtek drivers, in my case).

7. Close Other Tabs

As you may know, Google Meet lives on the web. If another tab on the browser is using device speakers then you might face audio issues during Google Meet calls. Simply identify those tabs with a little speaker icon on the tab and close them.

Doing these checks and testing your audio before a meeting can save you from awkward moments, like when your Meet sound doesn't work during a presentation.

Here's how to test your sound on Google Meet:

        1. Start the meeting using the video link provided in the app or calendar invite. Don't click "Enter the Meeting" yet.

        2. Tap the three dots at the top-right corner of the self-view for more options.

        3. Pick "Settings."

        4. Make sure that your microphone and speaker settings are the correct ones for the meeting.

        5. Click "Test" next to the speaker icon.

2. Grant required permissions to avoid audio problems

If you're experiencing Google Meet audio issues on Windows 10/11, it could be due to browser, operating system, or application permissions. You'll need to grant microphone access to resolve this problem.

When your Google Meet microphone isn't working, it can bring a meeting to a screeching halt — but the good news is that it's relatively easy to troubleshoot and solve. Here are seven ways to get your mic working in Google Meet. 

Make sure your microphone is working properly outside of Google Meet

When it comes to troubleshooting a problem with hardware like a microphone, it's helpful to make sure the mic itself is working, then to move on to assessing if it works properly in a service like Google Meet. To do that, test the mic in an app other than Meet. In Windows, for example, try recording audio in Sound Recorder. Click Start and type "record." Click Sound Recorder when you see it in the search results, and then make a test recording to see if the mic is working. Be sure to choose the same microphone you're trying to use in Google Meet, if there's more than one option. If you're having a problem on a different device, like your phone, check that you can record audio in an app on that device instead. 

Check to make sure no other app is using the microphone

A common glitch you might encounter when starting a video call: For some reason, another app is already using the microphone, and that app won't release the mic when Meet needs it. The result is that Meet can't transmit any audio. If you know what app is using the microphone, close it and then restart Google Meet. If you don't know what app is responsible, restart your device.  

Here is how to restart a Windows computer , and here's how to restart your iPhone regardless of which model you own . You can turn off most Android phones by holding the power button for several seconds, or swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Power icon in the shortcuts panel.

Make sure Google Meet has permission to use the microphone

Permissions can be tricky, and it's entirely possible you accidentally denied Google Meet permission to use the microphone at some point in the past. 

On an iPhone, start the Settings app and tap Privacy & Security . Tap Microphone and make sure that Meet is turned on by swiping the button to the right. If you have an Android, start the Settings app and tap Apps . Tap See all apps and tap Meet . Tap Permissions , then Microphone , and  enable it by choosing either Allow only while using the app or Ask every time .  

If you're using Windows, go to the Settings app and choose  Privacy & security , then Microphone . Make sure both Let apps access your microphone and Let desktop apps access your microphone are enabled by swiping the buttons to the right.  

Or, if you are using a Mac, open System Preferences and then choose Security & Privacy . Click the Privacy tab. Click the Lock icon at the bottom to unlock the page. Click Microphone on the left and make sure that Meet is enabled with a check mark.  

Make sure your browser has access to Google Meet

If you are trying to use Google Meet in the Chrome browser, ensure that it's properly configured as well. Open Chrome , type "chrome://settings/content/microphone" and press Enter . In the Default behavior section, make sure that Sites can ask to use your microphone is selected. Then start a Google Meet and click the Camera icon in the Address Bar at the top of the screen. Select Always allow https://meet.google.com to access your camera and microphone and click Done .

Another common glitch is that Google Meet might be trying to use the wrong microphone — this can easily happen if you have more than one webcam or microphone attached to your device. Especially common on Windows, you might, for example, find that Meet is using the microphone in a VR headset that's halfway across the room instead of the mic in the webcam clipped to the lid of your laptop. To check, start Google Meet in a browser and click the three-dot button at the bottom of the page, then click Settings in the pop-up menu. Click the Audio tab and then check the Microphone dropdown menu. If needed, select a different mic and close the window. 

Restart your device

If you've gotten this far and nothing has worked, it might simply be a case in which some intermittent software glitch is keeping Google Meet from working properly. The remedy: In many situations, you can simply restart the computer or mobile device and then try again.  

Update your device's operating system

Finally, if nothing else has resolved the issue, it's possible that you need to update your device's operating system. Windows should automatically install the latest updates, but you can check by clicking the Start button and typing "update." Click Check for updates and then click the Check for updates button. You wake up, put on a nice shirt, rush to make coffee, and...Google Meet isn't working. You might see a blank screen, a fuzzy image, or it simply won't launch at all. Here's how to fix Google Meet.

The Cause of Google Meet Not Working

Problems with Google Meet can be grouped into three basic categories. Software issues, hardware issues, and Internet issues.

Software issues include problems like your web browser crashing or the app failing to launch. Hardware issues, which are most common on PC and Mac, are related to a problem with your webcam and/or microphone. Internet issues are caused by spotty Internet connectivity or a problem with Google Meet's online services.

While the source of your problem can vary, focusing on these three issues will usually resolve the problem and get Google Meet working again.

How to Fix Google Meet on PC or Mac

These solutions will help you Google Meet on a PC or Mac. We recommend you follow the steps in the order they appear.

Check that your computer meets the minimum requirements of Google Meet. All major browsers are supported on Windows and macOS, but you'll need a recent version of the browser you use.

Check for Internet or Google Meet service outages . Knowing there's an outage won't solve the problem but will at least halt your troubleshooting efforts.

Verify the meeting code. Google Meet sessions are usually organized using links rather than entering a meeting code manually, but there's always the possibility of a slip-up. Communicate with the meeting's host and verify the code is correct.

Check that your browser has webcam access . Most browsers will display a camera icon in or near the address bar. Click on that icon to see camera settings and verify the camera is available.

Close and re-open your web browser. This will clear up any temporary issues with your browser.

Try a different web browser. As listed in its system requirements, Google Meet is compatible with all major web browsers. Still, a bug or configuration issue in your default browser may be the source of the problem.

Check your Internet connection . If it appears slow and you are using Wi-Fi, try moving your computer closer to your router. This will clear up problems caused by unreliable or slow Wi-Fi.

Reboot your router and modem . This will resolve any temporary issue caused by a bug in your router or modem. It may also clear up Internet speed or connectivity issues.

Check that your webcam or microphone is working and fix any issue that you discover. This will help you determine if the problem is a camera or microphone issue instead of a problem with Google Meet.

How to Fix Google Meet on iOS or Android

These solutions will help you Google Meet on an iOS or Android device. We recommend you follow the steps in the order they appear.

Check that your device meets the minimum requirements of Google Meet. You will need Android 5 (or newer) or iOS 12 (or newer). Upgrade to the latest operating system available on your device, if possible.

Download and use the Google Meet app. Many mobile devices can access Google Meet through a web browser, but using a browser instead of the app is not reliable.

Check for Internet or Google Meet service outages. Knowing there's an outage won't solve the problem but will at least halt your troubleshooting efforts.

Restart the Google Meet app. Note that you must completely close the app, not just flip away from it. Our guides to closing an app on iOS and closing an app on Android can teach you how to do this.

Uninstall and re-install the Google Meet app. This should clear up any temporary bugs or configuration issues caused by the app itself.

Check your Internet connection. If it appears slow and you are using Wi-Fi, try moving your phone closer to your router. If you're using mobile data, attempt to find a Wi-Fi access point with a strong connection. This will resolve issues caused by poor Wi-Fi or mobile data connectivity.

Reboot your router and modem if you're at home. This will resolve any temporary issue caused by a bug in your router or modem. It may also clear up Internet speed or connectivity issues.

Verify that your device's camera is working. The best way to do this is by opening the stock camera app. This will help you determine if the problem is a camera issue on your device rather than Google Meet itself.

An Important Note About Free vs. Paid Google Meet

Google Meet is both a free service for individuals and a paid service that individuals and organizations can use to host internal video and audio conferences.

Some features, like breakout calls or dial-in phone numbers, are not available without paying a subscription fee. Free and paid plans also have different restrictions on how many people can participate in a conference and how long a conference can run.

You can only lift the restrictions on the free service by upgrading to a paid plan. Google's page on Plans & Pricing for Meet provides the details.

If you're having audio issues on Google Meet, click the Video Call link, select More Options > Settings , and make sure the microphone and speaker settings show your specific equipment and not Default Device . You can also check audio settings: On a PC, right-click the speaker icon, click the Playback tab, select your device, click Set Defaul t, and then do the same on the Recording tab. On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Sound > Input and choose the correct microphone, and then go to Output and choose the correct speaker or headset.

Google Chrome has several grid view extensions that allow users to see a grid view during Google Meet videoconferences. If your grid view isn't working, first go to the Chrome Store and make sure you've downloaded a grid view extension. If you have the extension but it's still not working, the extension may need to be updated. To update manually, type chrome://extensions in the Chrome search bar, toggle on Developer Mode , and then tap Update from the top menu to update your extensions.

Problem: Can’t join or start a meeting

If you’re having problems joining an existing Google Meet video meeting or creating a new meeting, first make sure that you are signed in with a Google or Google Workspace account — you can do so by visiting the Google website, then clicking the blue Sign In button. If your account is one from your workplace, you may need to check with your administrator to ensure that Google Meet’s video calling is enabled for your organization.

At this time, only meetings set up by Google Workspace users will have a dial-in number, which allows meeting attendees to call into a meeting using their telephone. Additionally, while the U.S. does support the dial-in feature, not all countries around the world are included. It’s also worth noting that while all Google Workspace users have access to the dial-in feature for calls to the U.S. and Canada (and a list of other approved countries as well, if you have a supported Workspace account), dialing in internationally (for certain countries) requires an additional subscription to Google’s Meet Global Dialing service. If you have this subscription and wish to dial in with a country outside of the U.S. and Canada, be sure to check with Google to make sure that your desired country supports the dial-in feature .

Bug: Education users can’t join from outside the domain

If you are using a Google Workspace for Education account, there is a known bug in which a meeting creator must be present to approve or deny join requests from outside the domain. As a result, if the meeting creator is absent from the call, users from outside the domain won’t be able to join the call, and the Ask to Join page will crash. Until this issue is fixed, the best solution is to ensure the meeting creator stays on the call until all participants with external email addresses are present.

If you can no longer add additional people to your meeting, you may have reached the limit for your subscription. Personal Google accounts and G Suite Basic accounts have a limit of 100 participants. Education Fundamentals accounts are also limited to 100 participants, while G Suite Business, Business Standard, and Essentials accounts can contain up to 150 participants. (Business Starter is still capped at 100.) For Business Plus and Enterprise customers, Google Meet can support up to a maximum of 250 participants. Enterprise Essentials customers are still capped at 150, however. Education Plus accounts also have a maximum of 250 participants.

When you first join a Google Meet conference, the system will ask permission to use your camera and microphone. If you accidentally denied the system, you can change your response by following the steps given below:

Step 1 : Visit the Google Meet website , preferably using Google Chrome.

Step 2 : Click the New Meeting button and then select Start an Instant Meeting from the menu that pops up.

Step 3 : In the address bar on Chrome, click the Camera and Microphone Blocked icon (a small camera with a red X).

Step 4 : Click Always Allow https://meet.google.com to Access Your Camera and Microphone .

Step 5 : Click Done . A message may then pop up — just click Dismiss if it does. Then click on the Turn On Camera and Turn On Microphone icons at the bottom of the meeting window. Your camera and microphone should now be working properly.

Problem: People can’t see your camera when on MacOS

On the latest versions of MacOS (Mojave and later), you’ll need to permit Chrome or Firefox to use your webcam. This is a security measure to ensure no unapproved applications are using your webcam or microphone when they should not.

Note: Before following these steps, check to ensure that your camera is plugged in properly. If you can access your webcam in other apps, such as FaceTime or Photobooth, continue.

Step 1 : Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen.

Step 2 : Select System Preferences .

Step 3 : Select the Security & Privacy setting.

Step 4 : Choose Privacy and then Camera .

Step 5 : Ensure that either Google Chrome or Firefox has a check next to it.

You can also follow these same steps if your microphone is denied. During step 4, select the Microphone option instead of the Camera option.

Bug: Drop-down menus won’t show during screen sharing

The team at Google is currently aware that when you share a window within Google Meet, drop-down menus will not show. If you need drop-down menus, the best option at this time is to share your whole screen instead of a certain window.

• Fixing Google Chrome: Google Meet is only available in Chrome. That means if you have any unaddressed issues with your Chrome browser, you might run into Google Meet errors. First, close down all of your tabs and restart your Chrome browser. Fix Google Meet Audio: Troubleshooting Guide

There can be various reasons why the audio setting during your Google Meet session does not work. The audio could not work when the mute button is on or, it could also be some technical issues that are causing the problem. Here are some tips on how to solve the audio problem when you join the Google Meet session.

1. Check the unmute button in your screen.

In your Google Meet room, you will see the following three circle buttons at the bottom of your screen. When this microphone icon on the left is red and has a slash, this mutes the microphone. Click on it to unmute your audio. You can also check the microphone status in the Google Meet preview pane before joining a meeting. When there are at least five participants who have joined the Google Meet room, the system could automatically mute the microphone. The professor (host) who created the Meet room could have remotely muted all student microphones. In all these cases, only you can unmute yourself.

2. Provide access to microphone.

By default, the web browser could block microphone access to websites and web apps such as Google Meet. The purpose of this default setting is to protect the privacy of users. When you join your Google Meet room, your browser should have prompted you to allow access to the microphone. However, the notification that asks for your permission to enable microphone access could not show up if you have mistakenly deselected microphone access and selected not to receive that notification. In this case, you must manually provide the required permissions by taking the following steps. This process could be different depending on your browser. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge Chromium: Click the padlock-shaped icon to the left corner of the address bar, and then set Microphone to ‘allow’ .

3. Select the preferred microphone.

When there are multiple microphones connected to your PC or Mac, the Google Meet may use a different microphone than what you are currently using. Generally, Google Meet will automatically connect to the microphone on your computer. If your computer microphone does not work and you were trying to use a different microphone, you may need to select your preferred microphone. Start by clicking ‘Settings’ on the Google Meet menu.

Next to the Audio tab, select the correct microphone to use during your Google Meet session. To prevent potential issues with echoing, you may want to set the speakers to use the same hardware (if available). Click ‘Done’ to save your changes. If the audio setting in Google Meet does not show your microphone in the available audio input source, go to ‘Troubleshooting guide for microphone setting in Windows.’

4. Use your phone as your speaker and microphone.

If your microphone or speaker does not work on your computer, you can also use your phone as your speaker and microphone. In your Google Meet room, click ‘use a phone for audio’ . There are two ways you can access the audio in your Google Meet through your phone. You can either make the system to call your phone by using ‘call me’ tab or ‘dial in’ the phone number to access the audio.

In the call me tab, enter your phone number. You should choose the right country that you are in and click call me . To save your phone number and have it auto-typed when you access your Google Meet room the next time, you can click remember the phone number on this device .

In the ‘dial in’ tab, select your country and dial the number on your phone. When prompted, enter the PIN and press pound.

Join the meeting using the meeting code or link.

When have to present a video or an audio. Open the video or audio in a separate Google Chrome tab .

Click on Present now option at the bottom right corner of the Google Meet window.

Choose the option of A Chrome tab . Now choose the tab where you have opened the video or audio.

Step 5 – Most Important

Check the checkbox at the bottom of the popup asking marked with Share audio . Then, click on Share .

Now, play the video or audio which you have opened in the tab and other participants will be able to hear the audio clearly.

• If you want to stop sharing the audio switch it off from you Google Meet by pressing the switch marked with Presentation Audio just below Stop presenting button.
• If you want to presenting, click on Stop presenting button in the centre of your Google Meet window .
