जीवनी या जीवन-चरित अँगरेजी शब्द बायोग्राफी का हिंदी रूपांतर है. भारतीय साहित्य में यह विद्या प्राचीन काल से ही चली आ रही है. सही है कि प्राचीन साहित्य-शास्त्र में इसका तात्त्विक विवेचन उपलब्ध नहीं होता, किंतु पाश्चात्य विद्वानों ने इसे विभिन्न रूपों में परिभाषित करने का प्रयत्न किया है.

निर्देश – एक जीवनी-लेखक के अनुसार इतिहास की दृष्टि से जीवन आत्नोचनात्मक, प्रज्ञातटस्थ, उत्सुकता, विवरणों के औचित्यपूर्ण विश्लेषण और चयन पर बल देती है. इस प्रकार के लेखन में अवयव-संबंधी एकसूत्रता विद्यमान रहती है. इस प्रकार के लेखन में तटस्थ-भाव का निर्वाह तो अपेक्षित है ही. उस व्यक्तिविशेष के जीवन से संबंधित प्रसंगों, घटनाओं आदि की अभिव्यक्ति भी सहज और स्वाभाविक गति से होनी चाहिए.

जीवनी-लेखन के संदर्भ में क्रमबद्धता का सुनियोजन आवश्यक है. जीवन के विविध घटना-प्रसंगों का आलेख सिलसिलेवार ढंग से होना चाहिए, तभी उसमें आकर्षण और रोचकता का समावेश हो सकेगा. जीवनी-लेखन के लिए व्यक्ति का महान् होना आवश्यक है. वह व्यक्ति ऐतिहासिक, धार्मिक अथवा साहित्यिक, किसी भी दृष्टि से महान् हो सकता है. ऐसे लेखन में हमें अतिरंजनापूर्ण प्रसंगों से बचने का भरसक प्रयास करना चाहिए. जीवन की विविध सामग्री का उपस्थापन, जब सुगठित और क्रमबद्ध रूप में, तटस्थ-भाव का निर्वाह करते हुए किया जाता है, तभी लेखन व्यक्ति अथवा पाठक को अपनी ओर खीचने में समर्थ होता है.

प्रो० कैलास ने जीवनी की प्रस्तुतीकरण में पाँच सामग्री की अनिवार्यता स्वीकार की है –

• व्यक्तिविशेष की उपलब्ध रचनाएँ,
• व्यक्तिविशेष की डायरी और पत्रादि,
• व्यक्तिविशेष के निवासस्थल का पर्यवेक्षण,
• समकालीन व्यक्तियों के संस्मरण या इंटरव्यू,
• व्यक्तिविशेष से घनिष्ठ संबंध रखने वाले व्यक्तियों से उपलब्ध सामग्री.

उपर्युक्त आधारों पर लिखा गया जीवनी-साहित्य अत्यधिक प्रामाणिक और पुष्ट होता है.

जीवनी-लेखन का वर्गीकरण

जीवनी-लेखन में विभिन्न प्रकार के महापुरुषों के जीवनसत्य की अभिव्यक्ति होती है. इस आधार पर इसे विभिन्न वर्गों में रखकर देखा जा सकता है –

( क) राजनीतिक महापुरुष – राजनीति के क्षेत्र में अभूतपूर्व कार्य करनेवाले व्यक्तियों को इस वर्ग के अंतर्गत रखा जा सकता है. उदाहरणार्थ – घनश्याम दास बिड़लालिखित ‘बापू’, मन्मथनाथ गुप्त-लिखित ‘चंद्रशेखर आजाद’ तथा मुकंदीलाल वर्माकृत ‘कर्मवीर गाँधी’ को देखा जा सकता है.

( ख) वैज्ञानिक महापुरुष – उन महापुरुषों की जीवनी भी महत्वपूर्ण होती है जिन्होंने अनुसंधान के क्षेत्र में स्मरणीय कार्य किये हैं. ऐसे वैज्ञानिक महापुरुषों में जेम्स वाट, न्यूटन, आइंस्टाइन इत्यादि के नाम लिये जा सकते हैं.

( ग) ऐतिहासिक महापुरुष – इस देश में वैसे अनेकानेक व्यक्तियों का प्रादुर्भाव हुआ, जिनकी अमिट छाप हमें विभिन्न रूपों में प्रभावित करती रही है. सम्राट् अशोक, महाराणा प्रताप सिंह, मान सिंह इत्यादि इतिहास के वैसे ही ऐतिहासिक पुरुष हैं, जिनकी जीवनी का लेखन किया जा सकता है.

( घ) साहित्यिक महापुरुष – साहित्य के क्षेत्र में भी कुछ ऐसे महापुरुषों का आविर्भाव हुआ है, जिनके जीवन से हम प्रेरणा ग्रहण कर बढ़ते हैं, यद्यपि इस प्रकार का जीवन-चरित्र कम ही लिखा गया है. साहित्यिक महापुरुषों में तुलसीदास, कबीरदास, भारतेंदु के जीवन-चरित लिखे जा सकते हैं.

( ङ) धार्मिक महापुरुष – धार्मिकता की दृष्टी से जिनके कार्य महत्त्वपूर्ण होते हैं, वैसे महापुरुषों को इस संदर्भ में देखा जा सकता है. धार्मिक महापुरुषों के अंतर्गत स्वामी दयानंद, स्वामी श्रद्धानंद आदि की जीवनियाँ लिखी जा सकती हैं.

यहां आप स्ववृत्त लेखन का विस्तार पूर्वक अध्ययन करेंगे और जानेंगे नौकरी तथा किसी भी पद के लिए आवेदन के साथ स्ववृत्त लेखन कैसे लिखा जाता है।

अंग्रेजी में इसे बायोडाटा ( Biodata ) भी कहा जाता है।

इसका अध्ययन वैसे तो सभी वर्ग तथा उम्र के लोगों के लिए है किंतु विशेष कर इसका प्रयोग विद्यार्थी तथा आवेदक के लिए लाभकारी होगा।

स्ववृत्त लेखन की पूरी जानकारी

स्ववृत्त लेखन से अभिप्राय अपने विवरण से है। यह एक बना बनाया प्रारूप होता है जिसे विज्ञापन के प्रत्युत्तर में आवेदन पत्र के साथ भेजा जाता है।

नौकरी के संदर्भ में स्ववृत्त की तुलना एक उम्मीदवार के दूत या प्रतिनिधि से की जाती है।

1. सबसे पहले शीर्षक लिखें

इस पृष्ठ को तैयार करने से पहले आपको सबसे ऊपर इसका शीर्षक लिखना चाहिए । आपका शीर्षक क्या होगा, यह पूरी तरह निर्भर करता है कि आप क्या लिखने के लिए विभिन्न स्रोतों की मदद ले रहे थे । एक प्रोजेक्ट फाइल, किताब, रिसर्च पेपर, केस स्टडी आदि सभी के लिए अलग अलग शीर्षक आमतौर पर लिखे जाते हैं ।

What Is a Biography?

A biography is an account of someone’s life written by someone else . While there is a genre known as a fictional biography, for the most part, biographies are, by definition, nonfiction.

Generally speaking, biographies provide an account of the subject’s life from the earliest days of childhood to the present day or, if the subject is deceased, their death.

The job of a biography is more than just to outline the bare facts of a person’s life.

Rather than just listing the basic details of their upbringing, hobbies, education, work, relationships, and death, a well-written biography should also paint a picture of the subject’s personality and experience of life.

DETAILS: Give specific details about people, places, events, times, dates, etc. Reflect on how events shaped the subject. You might want to include some relevant photographs with captions. A timeline may also be of use depending upon your subject and what you are trying to convey to your audience.

TENSE Written in the past tense (though ending may shift to the present/future tense)

Hindi is one of the official languages of India, with more than 545 million speakers. This Indo-Aryan language is written using the Devanagari script. The language also includes more than a thousand conjunct letters, which are used to express clusters of consonants. [2] X Research source

Forming Individual Letters

• The University of North Carolina has a full chart of all the Devanagari letters available at https://taj.oasis.unc.edu/Hindi.Less.25/wrtingsys.htm . Another chart with the letters divided into pronunciation groups is available at https://www.omniglot.com/writing/devanagari.htm .
• Practice a small group of 5 or 6 letters for a few minutes each day. When you can write those letters automatically, move on to the next group of letters. Remember to go back and review the letters periodically so you don't forget what you've learned.

• The strokes that you make are important. Doing them correctly and in order will make it easier when you start connecting letters together to write words. Your letter chart may outline the strokes to be made, or you can search online for other sources that give you the correct ordering of the strokes for each letter.
• The horizontal line at the top of each letter is always the last stroke to finish the letter. When you practice, try to keep the letters close to the same size, so this line is always at roughly the same height.

• For example, अ is a short a , which has a sound similar to the a in the English word "about." Add another vertical line after the first to make a long a , आ. This vowel has a sound similar to the a in the English word "father."

• All consonants are attached to a short a , unless specified otherwise. Therefore, the short a , or अ, does not have a matra , or dependent form.
• Each vowel's matra is 1 or 2 strokes appended to the consonant the vowel is attached to. For example, the matra for a long a is ा (with the circle showing where the consonant should go). A long a attached to the letter sa would look like this: सा.

• You might also practice the consonant with the different vowel matras, so you know how to write these syllables. Since Hindi is a phonetic language, this will help you when you start reading and writing words.

Creating Short Words

• For some letters, such as the short a , the line isn't over the entire letter. Keep this in mind when you're connecting multiple letters together. [9] X Research source

• For example, a Hindi word most people are familiar with is "namaste." This greeting, written in the Devanagari script, is नमस्ते.
• Writing polite words and phrases is also important. For example, if you wanted to say "thank you" in a letter, you would write धन्यवाद.

• You can find the words and script on many language learning websites. For example, many of the words for parts of the body included in the song are available at https://blogs.transparent.com/hindi/hindi-vocabulary-for-body-parts/ . You can also use a Hindi-English dictionary to find translations for the words you need.

• Start with a handful of large objects. Once you've committed them to memory, you can add a few more. You might also go from a large object to a small object. For example, you could label your bed (बिस्तर), then later add words for "pillow" or "blanket."

How an 1864 law set the stage for Arizona court’s abortion ruling

One hundred and sixty years ago, after Union forces had wrested control of the American Southwest from Confederate troops, President Abraham Lincoln appointed a New York judge to write the legal code of the newly formed territory of Arizona.

The judge, William Thompson Howell, was tasked with ensuring that the new laws that would govern Arizona — which was previously part of New Mexico — would fully abolish slavery. But tucked into the 500-page document known as the Howell Code was another provision: a ban on all abortion s except to save a woman’s life, under penalty of prison time for doctors who performed the procedure.

Arizona’s Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld that 1864 law , ruling on a request from the state’s former attorney general to restore it in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade — a request that had set off a legal battle with Planned Parenthood. The justices’ 4-2 decision paves the way for most abortions to be banned in the state, making Arizona the 17th state to virtually outlaw abortion . The decision could still face legal challenges.

The legal underpinning for the ban rests on a section of the 1864 Howell Code.

Lawmakers and abortion rights advocates criticized the court’s decision to revive a century-old law. “This cruel ban was first enacted in 1864 — more than 150 years ago, before Arizona was even a state and well before women had secured the right to vote,” President Biden said in a statement. Officials from Planned Parenthood Arizona, a party to the court case, called the law “archaic.”

The relevant portion of the 1864 law, which was codified into similar language in Arizona’s Criminal Code, reads: “[E]very person who shall administer or cause to be administered or taken, any medicinal substances, or shall use or cause to be used any instruments whatever, with the intention to procure the miscarriage of any woman then being with child, and shall be thereof duly convicted, shall be punished by imprisonment in the Territorial prison for a term not less than two years nor more than five years.”

Before the Howell Code was adopted, Arizona had voted in 1861 to align itself with the Confederacy. When the U.S. military regained control of the area, the House of Representatives voted to establish the Territory of Arizona in 1863.

The new territory needed new laws. Lincoln named Howell, a New Yorker who held several legal and political roles in Michigan, as a judge. Howell was considered relatively progressive for his time, having worked to abolish capital punishment , among other causes, said Kevin Waite, an associate professor of American History at Durham University in the United Kingdom.

But while the Howell Code outlawed slavery and enshrined certain rights for married women, such as the right to own property in their name, it also contained “standard reactionary 19th-century” provisions like the antiabortion clause, Waite said.

The inclusion of the clause was a sign of how attitudes toward abortion in the United States were growing more restrictive at the time, a precursor to the Victorian-era “moral panic” around women’s sexuality, he added.

Before the mid-1800s, abortion was a “fairly common and uncontroversial issue, in the United States and elsewhere,” historian Sarah Handley-Cousins wrote in an article published by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. When women stopped having their period, either because they were pregnant or for another reason, “it was often interpreted as an unhealthy imbalance of humors” to be addressed, Handley-Cousins wrote.

Some women would choose to take “herbal or medicinal remedies known as emmenagogues” to bring their periods back — an action that was “not considered problematic” at the time, she wrote.

“Fetuses were not recognized as human lives, but rather a ‘blockage’ until quickening , or when a women first felt the fetus move, generally in the fourth or fifth month,” she wrote. “After this point, abortion would be taboo. What women did before this point was considered strictly the purview of women.”

In the 1820s and 1830s, states began banning abortifacients, and they came to be seen as poisons, according to Handley-Cousins.

It’s unlikely to be a coincidence, said Waite, that the antiabortion provision of the Howell Code was “tucked away” inside a section relating to the prevention of killings by poison. The preceding line stated: “Every person who shall willfully and maliciously administer or cause to be administered to or taken by any person, any poison or other noxious or destructive substance or liquid, with the intention to cause the death of such person, and being thereof duly convicted, shall be punished by imprisonment in the Territorial prison for a term not less than ten years, and which may extend to life.”

This, said Waite, was in line with the abortion debate at the time, which was often “more concerned with the health of the mother” than with making “a moral judgment about the propriety of abortion.”

In fact, religion was relatively absent from the debate at the time, he said. Leslie Reagan, author of “When Abortion Was a Crime,” wrote : “At conception and the earliest stage of pregnancy, before quickening, no one believed that a human life existed; not even the Catholic Church took this view. Rather, the popular ethic regarding abortion and common law were grounded in the female experience of their own bodies.”

That eventually changed. “In 1857, the American Medical Association began to advocate against abortion, declaring pregnancy the domain of physicians and rejecting women’s own bodily experience – thereby dismissing the experience of quickening as a turning point,” Handley-Cousins wrote. And according to Reagan, in 1869, “at about the same time that abortion became politicized” in the United States, the Catholic Church began to “condemn abortion; in 1895, it condemned therapeutic abortion.” By 1880, every state had laws restricting abortion, according to Planned Parenthood .

So the Howell Code, with its antiabortion provision, was “maybe a little bit ahead of the times, but it’s certainly not an outlier,” Waite said.
