Domain names with privacy are purchased for about $24 a year. Certainly, hosting cost varies, but it's about $5 – $9 a month or about $70 – $80 a year.

There are two general ways you can launch your online coffee store that we would like to discuss next. The first is to set up a self-hosted website using WordPress. Or you can use the total website e-commerce platform service.

While it's not too expensive, you still have to pay for several months if you aren't completely set up yet. So, you want to make sure you allow yourself a couple of months to gain traction.

The great news, however, is that there are no annual contracts. You simply pay month-to-month.

In light of that, one drawback may be saving your hard work. For example, once you opt-out of Shopify, you can lose all your content if you don't save it or export it.

Nevertheless, Shopify offers pure convenience and hassle-free website development, hosting, and smooth, easy, and safe financial transactions.

Selling With WordPress

WordPress is software that will serve as the backbone of your coffee website. Your hosting provider often allows your website access to the internet.

The important thing to remember is that your online store will take time to build traction – so start your website business with this understanding.

Anticipate that you will launch your store, and you might take a while to get regular online visitors. If you anticipate this well enough, you can start to develop your promotional efforts long before you open for business.

Branding will also play an important role in developing your online coffee business.

How great would it be, combining business with pleasure?  Personally, I couldn’t think of anything better and in this article, I’ll show you exactly how to start an online coffee business.

There are many benefits to selling products in an online store, not least of all because you can run it alongside your day job until it becomes successful enough to become your full time job, that is. 

Is selling coffee online profitable?

Selling coffee online can be extremely profitable.  You only need to take a look at places like Etsy and  Amazon  to know that coffee is a great product to sell online.  And, according to  Statista , there were more than 166 million bags of coffee consumed worldwide in 2020/2021.  That’s a lot of coffee!

Now more than ever, online sales of are booming.  As a customer, it’s effortless as well as rather fun finding and purchasing a product online and waiting for it to be delivered directly to your door.  

So, let’s jump right in and I’ll show you how easy it is to start a coffee business online!

How to start a coffee business online

1. choose what platform you will use to sell your coffee..

Although there are many ways to start a coffee business online, here are three of the most popular ways of selling on the internet:

1.  Shopify

With Shopify you can customize your store the way YOU want to.  It looks like an actual website and you will be able to use your own domain name, for example,  Not only is it user friendly but there are so many templates to choose from to make your website look professional right from the start.

Shopify charges are made up of a monthly fee plus credit card transaction fees.  If you want to make your store look professional, you will need to purchase your own domain name, for example from GoDaddy.  

I would highly recommend Shopify, which is why I’ve made it number 1.  This is especially true if you’re planning on scaling up your business in the future.

2.  Amazon 

Amazon is one of the most well known online ecommerce platforms in the world!  This trusted online platform is visited by millions of visitors each and every day.  Setting up shop with Amazon means that your products can be sold to many countries throughout the world, not just the one you live in.

A great plus to setting up shop with Amazon means that you don’t need to hold inventory as stock is kept in their warehouses.  There is n o real shop to speak of and all you need to do is list your product in order to get selling, after you are approved of course.  

T he cost of listing and transaction fees does mean that profit margins are cut but that being said, every business will have running costs.  

These costs will typically be in the form of listing fees and transaction fees.

Etsy is best know for selling products that are or related to handmade goods.  I would definitely recommend promoting your product through Etsy ads, if you choose to sell items via this platform.  And, the more products you are able to offer for sale, the better.  A minimum of 10 products should be available to the public when you set up your store.  Now although you may only have one type of coffee to sell initially, you could make up gift sets.  These are really popular and can be suited to a variety of occasions from birthdays and Christmas to simply saying thank you.  Selling coffee prints or bespoke cards could also bulk up your shop, giving customers a wider choice of products while your brand builds.

Listing fees and transaction fees will also apply when using Etsy to sell your coffee online.


I would recommend using Shopify to start selling coffee as an online business.  

(You may heard of an app that is used in conjunction with Shopify, called  Dripshipping .  I would advise caution due many complaints about their sub-standard, generic labels.  It’s a shame as the concept of automatically sending out coffee to customers on your behalf is a great idea and would leave you free to concentrate on promoting your great product.)

2. Find a Private Label Coffee Roaster

When you have chosen a platform to sell from, you will need to find a private label coffee roaster that will provide you with the coffee for you to sell in your online store.

What is a private label coffee roaster?

A private label coffee roaster will not only roast but package and label bags of coffee with your brand for you to then sell as your own.  You can choose from ground to whole bean, light to darkly roasted.  

You could also choose to go the organic route, healthier for all, or even Kosher, although these will cost more.  

Tips for choosing the right private label coffee roaster for you:

  • Find a private label coffee roaster that provides small minimum order amounts.  As your brand becomes more popular, you can order larger amounts thereby increasing your profit margins.  If things don’t go to plan then at least you won’t be sitting with mountains of coffee that you are unable to shift.
  • Make sure they offer a range of products.  If your business suddenly takes off, then you will easily be able to expand to sell other products without having to switch suppliers.  
  • They offer different bag sizes.  This is handy because you might want to expand your range and for example, create gift packs using smaller bags of coffee.  This means that you won’t have to shop around to find someone else to do it for you.

3. Coffee branding

Use these useful tips to help you come up with a coffee brand.

Some may seem obvious but you’ll be surprised at how many people make mistakes when choosing a name for their brand.

Tie your brand name in with your product, if possible.  Write down as many words related to your coffee product, like ‘latte’, ‘cappuccino’, ‘beans’ and even the name of the coffee bean or plant to see if you can work them into your brand name.  Perkulatte Coffee or  Roastmaster Reserve  are great examples of this. 

  • Check that the name hasn’t already been used.  It is really disheartening to, after hours of brainstorming, settle on a name only to find that it has already been taken.  A simple Google search will help you find out if your choice of brand name has been taken or not.
  • Needs to be easy to read and easy to say and more importantly, not offensive to other cultures.  It  should also have no religious connotations which could be potentially offensive.  Again, a simple Google search will tell you what you need to know. 
  • Choose a name that you’ll be able to use on all your products, not just the coffee itself.  You never know what you’ll be selling in the future and successful businesses often expand into other areas within the same niche.
  • Test the name of your brand with family and friends.  If they don’t understand it, then neither will anyone else.

Once you have found a name that hasn’t already been taken and you think fits your product, then it’s time to get your logo created! 

4. Create a logo

Maybe you’re proficient at Photoshop and can whip one up in no time but if not, you can search online for a free logo maker or you can go to Fiverr and get one custom made for you.  I myself have used Fiverr for multiple projects and there are so many brilliant designers who will save you time and money by doing what they do best.

With Fiverr, you can choose a logo style which will help you narrow down the type of look you’re going for.  You will then be given a multitude of sellers who are offering gigs within the style you’ve chosen.

When choosing a seller, you are able to see how much they charge for the job, how long it will take and you reviews that other users have left for that seller.

Once you have chosen a seller try to give them as much information as possible on how you would like your logo to look.  Send in photos or images of colour schemes or other logos you like the look of and they will do their best to do what you’ve asked.  The more instructions/descriptions you can give them, the better!  

After working on your logo, depending on the package you have chosen, you should be able to make at least one revision.  Then when you are happy, the seller will send you your logo.

5. Marketing: Social Media

Now comes m y favourite part of setting up a business – working on promotion.  Social media is such a powerful marketing tool but you need to be consistent.

My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!

As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.

I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.

Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.

Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.

Starbucks will accept reusable cups for drive-thru and mobile orders

Starbucks announced it will allow customers to use their own personal cups for all visits, including drive-through and mobile orders, in a bid to reduce waste sent to landfills. 

The new practice starts Wednesday at all company-operated and participating licensed stores in the U.S. and Canada. 

“With the majority of Starbucks beverages enjoyed on-the-go, this milestone unlocks a big opportunity for customers to choose reusables and supports Starbucks commitment to reduce waste by 50 percent by 2030,” the Seattle-based company said in a news release , noting it is the first national coffeehouse to offer personal cups for mobile orders.

Plus there's a financial incentive — customers who bring a clean, personal cup get a 10-cent discount on their beverage and 25 bonus stars for U.S. Starbucks Rewards members.

So, how will it work?

Customers ordering inside cafes will simply let baristas know they brought their own personal cup and hand it over.

In drive-thrus, customers alert baristas when ordering that they have their own cup, and baristas will collect and fill the cup at the pickup window.

For in-app orders, customers will press the "customization" button and select "personal cup" and then continue ordering as normal. Once they get to the cafe, customers hand over their cup to baristas in the pick-up area.

The new effort comes after a personal cup test was piloted at 200 drive-thru stores in Colorado last spring.

“At Starbucks, we envision a future where every beverage can be served in a reusable cup,” Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer, said in a statement. “We know our customers are passionate about the planet, and now, they can join us in our efforts to give more than we take, no matter how they order.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s wish list for 2024 includes a major focus on combating retail theft and bolstering mental health care — but not so much on the ongoing influx of migrants arriving in New York City.

Hochul is proposing new laws that would impose penalties for selling stolen goods online, as well as tougher penalties for assaulting retail workers. She also wants to give business owners a tax credit if they bolster their store security.

That could be a tough sell for legislative Democrats, who often oppose increasing criminal penalties. But it was welcomed by Staten Island Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who sponsors a similar measure.

"This would put [retail workers] in line with any other frontline worker deemed during the pandemic —bus drivers, utility workers, cops, firefighters," she said. "Having this is a really big deal to help combat retail theft, and it's a worker protection bill."

Investor boost for Moscow Metro brings new line and less gridlock

For the first time Moscow Metro management is looking to attract private investors to build a new subway line in the east of the city. Several Russian and foreign companies are already lining up to take part in a project.

The Chief Executive of the Moscow Metro Igor Besedin says negotiations are underway with a Spanish investor.  The companies are interested in developing both underground and above ground with retail and other services offered to passengers. The first private line with 9 stations stretching 19 km would be the longest subway line built in recent years.  Its cost could be about $3.2 billion, according to the Russian consulting firm FBK. The new line leading from Aviamotornaya station to Lyubertsy fields should be completed by 2015.  Moscow has a serious traffic problem, and authorities think a new subway line will help reduce the gridlock. Currently the city has 300km of underground railway split across 12 lines with 182 stations. About 7 million people use the Moscow Metro every day. Moscow Metro system has no privately owned lines yet, but the Mykinino station in the west of Moscow was built by a private investor. Private subway lines are common in big cities all over the world. Private lines operate in Tokyo and in London.
