An emotionally fit and stable person always feels vibrant and truly alive and can easily manage emotionally difficult situations. To be emotionally strong, one has to be physically fit too. Although mental health is a personal issue, what affects one person may or may not affect another; yet, several key elements lead to mental health issues.

As a result, they lose their independence and confidence, which can be avoided by encouraging the children to believe in themselves at all times.

Narrative Essay Example about The Importance of Mental Health

For many, mental health is a topic of discussion that’s avoided. Some believe that it’s very important and something that needs to be talked about. Others believe it isn’t that important or that mental illness simply isn’t real. For me, my opinion on the topic has changed over time. I used to not be very aware and did not care that much about mental health. Only until I personally was affected by it did I understand its importance.

At a young age, my grandmother passed away. Shortly thereafter, my sister left the house and cut ties with my family. I was not only grieving with the loss of my grandmother, but also not knowing where my sister was or if she was ever coming back. I was devastated, but I didn’t have time to grieve. Everyone in my household became irritable, lashing out when faced with a minor inconvenience. Talking about my feelings became difficult since nobody wanted to bring the situation up. I felt like I was on an island, with nobody around to help.

My middle school years only made things worse for me. I always felt like I was bothering someone, or that I was being a disturbance. Making friends was a challenge because of my somber demeanor. My grades were plummeting because I couldn’t find the motivation to finish my homework. Things were getting bad. Nearing the end of 8th grade, I was at my lowest low. 

At this point, I knew something was wrong. I constantly felt tired, I couldn’t pay attention in class, I wasn’t motivated to do anything, and I couldn’t be bothered to do things I used to love doing like video games or sports. I talked to my mom, and she suggested that we see a therapist. I had no idea what a therapist was like since I had never been to one. To be quite honest, after looking it up I thought it was a scam. Why would I pay someone money to talk for an hour? The lady we visited changed my mind, however. She specialized in children and asked me a lot of questions right off the bat. They were things I had never been asked before. “How are things going around the house?” “How does that make you feel?” “Why do you feel unmotivated?” It felt good knowing that at least someone cared. After that, she had me do activities out of a booklet and on a laptop. Later I found out those were used to diagnose me with ADHD and Major Depressive Disorder.

While the diagnosis and the eventual use of medication helped, it didn’t solve everything. I still went to therapy and explained the way I felt. I started to gain confidence and things were looking up. I reached out to more people, involved myself with groups and clubs, and tried to stay more on top of my schoolwork. While things weren’t perfect, the progress was satisfying. Knowing that I could get through difficult times inspired me to do more and go beyond what I thought was possible. The people around me cheering me on and encouraging me to keep going made things a lot easier as well.

I have a lot of room for improvement, but I want to prove that people who are suffering from mental illnesses aren’t weak. Reaching out to others was the best thing I could have done for myself, and I want others to feel the same way.  I’m grateful for all the supportive people in my life, they’ve helped me to realize how important my own mental health is. Their kindness inspires me to work through my problems instead of letting them hold me back. Only through them would I have realized how important mental health truly is.

After carefully researching and critically evaluating my career options, I have decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling focusing on mental health counseling. This path will propel me toward becoming a mental health counselor. Not only am I an excellent listener with a desire to help the marginalized, but it is also evident that there is a growing need for clinical counselors in the country to safeguard against unemployment.

Furthermore, recent surveys indicate that clinical counselors receive competitive salary packages. Beyond the financial aspect, the mental health field is diverse and rapidly evolving. Much remains to be explored regarding brain function, and consequently, therapeutic methods in this field are not as advanced as in other medical fields. I plan to delve into this study area and uncover as much knowledge and information as possible throughout my career.

The decision to apply for the clinical counseling program in mental health was significantly influenced by an internship I completed at the Carter Center for Mental Health. Founded by Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, the center aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental disorders in society. Despite increasing media coverage and information dissemination about mental health, myths and misconceptions still prevail in society.

At the Carter Center, I undertook a three-month volunteer internship to gain insight into working as a psychologist. However, after visiting numerous hospitals, outpatient mental health facilities, and hospices, I realized that my true calling might be in mental health counseling.

The internship was an eye-opening experience regarding the challenges faced by mental health patients, including those with depression, substance abuse issues, schizophrenia, eating disorders, personality disorders, and anxiety disorders. Witnessing the struggles of thousands of Americans with mental health disorders, I instinctively knew I had to contribute to the social welfare of this great country.

Cultural diversity and cultural prejudice are prevalent in our lives, and we must acknowledge and responsibly embrace them. Professionals have recently recognized the importance of addressing the challenges in serving culturally diverse populations. Cultural values, beliefs, and assumptions significantly influence mental health workers and other professionals’ service delivery.

These cultural experiences, traditions, beliefs, and assumptions shape our worldview. Thus, professionals should be conscious of their thoughts and strive to separate them from their work. Counselors and clients bring a range of values, attitudes, culturally influenced behaviors, biases, ideas, and assumptions to the therapeutic process. Some mental health professionals and counselors underestimate the significance of these factors in treatment.

I consider myself culturally enlightened, having grown up in a culturally diverse community in New York. This environment has taught me to embrace and appreciate cultural pluralism and diversity. Cultural diversity is an integral element that enriches society.

I have interacted with people from various cultures in school, stores, and my neighborhood, learning that humans are not as different as we sometimes think. We need to treat each other with respect and embrace each other’s beliefs, traditions, and cultural customs.

In addition to the internship, my drive for mental health counseling was subconsciously motivated by a teenage experience. Following the tragic death of my younger sister in a surfing accident, my mother fell into a state of depression. She frequently spoke of seeing my sister in her dreams. This placed a significant burden on my father to maintain family stability. Our relief came after my mother sought help from a post-trauma counselor.

She attended sessions with the counselor and, to our relief and joy, recovered within six months. She coped better with the loss of her daughter and realized that nothing could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

Reflecting on the counselor’s impact on my family, I appreciate this noble profession. I aspire to bring joy to families and individuals by helping them understand and cope with their mental health challenges.

Upon completing my Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling, I plan to practice for five to eight years in outpatient mental health facilities and other relevant settings to gain extensive experience in mental health counseling.

Additionally, I aim to join professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Mental Health Counselors Association, which require a Master’s degree in a related field and adherence to a strict code of ethics. Eventually, I plan to establish a private practice in New York, New Jersey, or California.

Mental Health in Schools Essay Example

Schools overlook their students' mental health, students that struggle with mental health sometimes struggle with being able to learn and focus in school. With the lack of education about mental health students could think that they are not normal and struggle with being confident in themselves; statistics and studies show that 18.8% of teenagers in public schools all across America have attempted or seriously thought about suicide. Public high schools are not properly equipped with the resources and staff to help students with their mental health and preventing suicide. 

One of America's only resources for mental health in schools is the guidance counselors and there are not enough counselors compared to the amount of students. For instance, a public highschool with 3000 students and 3 guidance counselors, each counselor would be giving 1000 students resources. On top of that, they have to be able to notice the changes in their students' actions and behaviors. “In the worst case scenario, a student on the brink of suicide or another mental health disorder can be denied a counselling session because their counselor was too busy with other students” (O'Connor). The lack of counselors in the school system is one of the main reasons students have no safe person or space to talk about their feelings. “Counselors are very grateful for their jobs and work very hard, but sometimes it feels like a band-aid on an arterial wound,”says one source (JONES). The amount of school shootings that occur around the United States severely affects students' mental health, and when they have no support system at home the only place they know to go is their school.  When schools do not have enough counselors it could potentially lead to more risk for suicide, feeling worthless and alone.  For example, in an impoverished highschool with only one counselor all of these students would only be able to see that counselor maybe once a month. Counselors also have very many other tasks they do everyday, like making schedules, graduation support, etc. Adding a school therapist or mental health resource room for students could potentially help this problem. Students need a safe space or person that they can go to when they need support. Teachers all across the country need to have the proper resources and training to be able to notice changes in students behavior and empathy. Additionally more counselors could help with the awareness of the problem. 

Furthermore, students should be able to have access to mental health days to take a mental break or go to therapy. Education systems in America frown upon this as it's considered “not necessary” with our 2020 pandemic occurring staff believing that these students have had enough days off and are falling behind with their graduation path. “A 2020 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the proportion of mental health-related emergency department visits for children aged 5–11 and 12–17 increased by about 24% and 31%, respectively, compared to 2019 (Blackmer and Shenker)”. Along with the pandemic teenagers had to stay home and quarantine away from their friends and couldn’t travel, with this occurring in early 2020 and is still currently happening, students are still struggling with feeling alone and having no support system at home and at school. When your mind is constantly going it could lead to exhaustion which could potentially alter your thinking skills and make you overall more depressed and could induce self harm. Allowing mental health days in all middle/high schools  could help prevent the body and mind from self harm with the stress and exhaustion that occurs from school. Your mind and body need a break from staying up until 3am working on homework or a big assignment due the next school day. When your mind and body gets exhausted you tend to have physical pain as well. “Some public schools have proposed that high schoolers should be allowed to take up to five mental health days off per semester to improve academic performance.” (“Should High Schoolers Have Mental Health Days in School? - Solstice RTC”). Allowing mental health days could show significant improvement in motivation and the students overall health. When students do take their allowed mental health days they could come back to school with more motivation and overall become a better student because they aren’t so stressed out about their big exam anymore and it gives them an opportunity to take a break. 

Teaching mental health in schools could bring awareness to other students and staff about the concerns and struggles that their classmates/students are battling with. Allowing mental health lessons to be taught in schools allows teachers to be able to recognize the signs of depression and anxiety. Without being taught the realities of mental health difficulties, children won’t understand the impact that ‘banter’ (whether it be insults, bullying or spreading of lies and rumors) could have. The only way this will change is if we educate them, just like physical health is taught; (Hughes). Schools all around America have health classes to teach signs of drug use, eating healthy, and staying fit but no mental health. Students could struggle majorly understanding why their thoughts and why they feel different from their friends and family and having no realization that they are struggling with mental health because they have never been taught about it. Students with undiagnosed anxiety tend to get extremely stressed out and overwhelmed on exams. With that being said the stress from the exam on top of everything else going on in their life could cause them to fail the exam as well as not understand why they failed after studying for hours. Furthermore, “Nervousness and anxiety are perfectly normal reactions to stress. For some people, this fear can become so intense that it interferes with their ability to perform well on a test” (“The Causes of Test Anxiety and Academic Stress”).

Some parents and faculty could argue that students use their mental health as an excuse for being lazy. Students that struggle with mental health severely have serious difficulties with learning and being able to manage their anxiety. When teachers say that their students are using their mental health as an excuse, it could lead to more anxiety when asking for an extension on a paper or an exam. Parents and teachers that don't struggle with mental health dismiss when their student/child comes to them with a concern. Lack of education on the topic can lead to this, not allowing mental health days as an excuse could be more harmful than letting your child struggle and not understand why in class.  “There's the danger that we take too much care and when they hit the real world that same kind of support isn't there," says David Cozzens, dean of students and associate vice president of student affairs at the University of Wyoming in Laramie (Petersen). When teachers say it's an excuse just to miss school and not do their work it can end up causing more anxiety on the student and make them not wanna come at all and potentially drop out of school completely. 

Overall, mental health is one of the biggest issues in public high schools today and it is extremely overlooked by teachers and not taking exams seriously. Teachers can show their support in many different ways to show students that it is a real thing. Mental health days could improve the struggle tremendously and teachers and guidance counselors should have more education on the topic all around America.

ABSTRACT Mental health has suffered significant neglect in health education and health sciences because of poor consciousness and awareness of the importance of this dimension of health. Physical health has enjoyed a high level of patronage among experts neglecting emotional health which is central to even physical health. Undergraduates are faced with a number of stressors which predispose them to mental health problems and disorders. These disorders are not considered threatening because only marked mental health problems are termed health disorders. Understanding predictors of mental health status is central to improving the health and well-being status of undergraduates which are keys to academic excellence. It is against this backdrop that this study was designed to examine psycho-social predictors of mental health status of undergraduates in the University of Ibadan. The descriptive survey research design was employed in the study and the population comprised all undergraduates in the University of Ibadan. A sample of 945 respondents was drawn using multi stage sampling technique. Data was collected using a self-developed and modified questionnaire with a reliability of 0.88 Cronbach alpha and generated data were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages and inferential statistics of regression models and t-test at 0.05 alpha level. The result of the study showed that respondents recorded poor mental health status and that there was significant difference in mental health status of male and female respondents with the former recording a higher level of mental health status. Findings also showed that psychological factors of self-esteem (R = 0.427, Adj. R2 = 0.221, p=0.000<0.05), self-efficacy (R = 0.140, Adj. R2 = 0.019, p=0.000<0.05) as well as the joint effect of these factors (R = 0.632, Adj. R2 = 0.387, p=0.000<0.05) significantly predicted mental health status of the respondents. It was also found that social factors of relationship factors (R = 0.836, Adj. R2 = 0.698, p=0.000<0.05) and academic factors (R = 0.424, Adj. R2 = 0.180, p=0.000<0.05)also significantly predicted mental health status of the respondents while familial factors (R = 0.045, Adj. R2 = 0.001, p=0.000<0.05) did not significantly predict it. Joint effects of social factors (R = 0.879, Adj. R2 = 0.773, p=0.000<0.05) as well as the joint effects of psycho-social (R = 0.970, Adj. R2 = 0.941, p=0.000<0.05) factors were also found to predict mental health status of respondents thus providing insight for necessary school health educational strategies. From the findings of the study, it was concluded that undergraduates in the University of Ibadan record poor mental health status and that male undergraduates have better mental health status than their female counterparts. This paper will consider religion and spirituality through the lens of responses to two of the most striking features of the last century: the medicalisation of emotion, and the re-imagining of non-western ideas by the West for therapeutic purposes. Because the medicalisation of emotion is a pervasive aspect of western culture, much discussion in the last century has concerned whether religion and spirituality complement, challenge or conflict with medical approaches to emotion. I will begin by discussing the backlash against the Freudian-influenced negative assessment of religion which is evident in the increasingly numerous studies of whether religion and spirituality are beneficial for mental health, pointing to how attention to a more diverse range of religions and to religions in context might nuance our understanding of the relationships between religion and mental health. Having considered ways in which religion and spirituality have been thought both to conflict with and to complement mental health, I will turn to ways in which religions and spirituality have been re-imagined for emotional healing, initially in 'alternative' but increasingly in mainstream popular and medical cultures. I will argue that at the heart of the re-imagining of spiritual resources by western consumers are not only practical, therapeutic concerns but also some important philosophical concerns to do with the mind and emotion: the relationship between the body and the mind, between the human person and the larger world (or the nature of consciousness), the nature of human wellbeing and its relationship to experiences of suffering, and the nature, value, importance and role of emotion. While therefore in some ways sympathetic to these re-imaginings, however, I will point to some important concerns raised by religious practitioners and by religious studies scholars about the appropriation of religious and spiritual traditions for therapeutic ends, focusing on issues of misrepresentation. As with the religion and mental health literature discussed earlier in the paper, I will argue that increased attention to the religious traditions in question is needed, and that this should be combined with a more respectful attitude towards them.

This article presents the results of a questionnaire-based survey of the perceived effects of metal detecting among British Armed Forces veterans with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and/or other diagnosed or undiagnosed psychological disorders. Although the qualitative analysis presented here is only a first step towards understanding its beneficial effects, the authors conclude that archaeological metal detecting can be regarded as having the potential to positively influence well-being and happiness for people suffering from mental health problems. The findings suggest that practitioners feel that metal detecting has a significantly positive and lasting effect on their health and well-being. A significant number of respondents feel that metal detecting has alleviated specific symptoms of their mental disorders (PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders). The key factors for the beneficial effect of metal detecting appear to be of a mental, sensory, physical and social nature. First and foremost, however, its beneficial effect seems to be deeply rooted in the fact that the participants interact with archaeological heritage.
