Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar gets up, close and personal with his superstardom in this mass entertainer

Selfiee review: if you are fine with akshay kumar continuing to do hindi remakes of films from the south, you would definitely enjoy selfiee..

Not very long ago we saw Ayushmann Khurrana play a superstar in An Action Hero , where an upcoming youth icon wanting to take a selfie with the actor ends up dead, and his brother lectures the superstar that all he is is because of public, so if they want a selfie, actors need to oblige. Cut to Akshay Kumar 's latest theatrical release Selfiee, where the actor plays a superstar and ends up in a murky mess of sorts with his biggest fan. All this fan desired for was a seflie with his idol, but things take an ugly turn when media gets involved and it becomes a battle of egos and an ultimate fight between a superstar vs his fan.

Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar in a still from the film.

An official remake of Malayalam film Driving Licence, this Akshay-starrer dramedy is not a frame by frame copy of the original (I've seen the Malayalam one in bit and parts) and has many lighter moments. Other than the basic storyline, Selfiee has ditched the serious undertones of the original and laced the writing with a lot of humour.

The story follows superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay) who wants a driving licence urgently to be able to finish the climax of his film and save the producer from incurring losses. His diehard fan, RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is given the task to help the actor, and he agrees to fulfil it without following the usual tedious process and asks for a selfie as a gesture in return. But things don't go as planned and a misunderstanding leads to their feud becoming prime time news, while public has a field day with their juicy fight.

I have somehow always enjoyed watching actors portray superstars onscreen; it's kind of watching a film within a film, so double the fun at the cost of one. And this is seemingly becoming a tried and tested formula for filmmakers. Remember when Om Kapoor, played by Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Shanti Om, became everyone's favourite, or when Vidya Balan brought to life the superstardom of Silk Smitha or even Kangana Ranaut's portrayal of Jayalalithaa during her best days as a superstar -- all these tried to bring to fore various aspects of a star's life and their connection with the common man, too.

With Selfiee, things look more real and relatable because of the story and narrative which is not too far-fetched and is pretty convincing. Selfiee doesn't end at being a feud between a star and an RTO officer, but also covers their emotional side of being a husband, a father and balancing it all with their respective jobs. The screenplay is engaging and doesn't let you have too many dull moments. The original story by Sachy has been written for the Hindi version by Rishabh Sharma and he tweaks it a bit to suit the Hindi audience's palette.

Emraan Hashmi in a still from Selfiee.

Akshay as Vijay gets as close as you could imagine to the superstardom he enjoys in real life. Bearing a charming persona and swag, he shows signs of gratitude for his fans despite being a self-made star. What I loved about Selfiee and which perhaps remains the highlight of the film for me, is Akshay's tendency to be able to take a joke on himself and laugh at it, too. Be it taking a dig at the constant scrutiny on the number of films he does in a year, Hindi films not working not working at the box office of late or a doctor telling him that he needs to do some 'classy films over massy cinema', or even his infamous smile showing his gums , he delivers all of these with so much ease.

It was after over a year that we saw Emraan Hashmi back on the big screen, and he has a pleasant screen presence though at places, he seemed a bit loud and over-the-top. But, maybe that's how some diehard fans of superstars are. That they can't control their emotions on seeing or meeting their 'gods'. In face-off scenes with Akshay, it's commendable to see how Emraan manages to hold his ground.

Among the supporting cast, Mahesh Thakur as Vijay's manager delivers an earnest performance, Meghna Malik as politico Vimla Tiwari is on-point with her comic timing and is given some funny lines. Abhimanyu Singh as Vijay's contemporary is comic relief and hilarious in scenes, but for someone with his acting calibre, he is completely wasted in the script. And so is Paritosh Tripathi and Kusha Kapila, who appear and disappear as per convenience.

And the ladies are once again neglected or have very little to do in the film. Nushrratt Bharuccha as Om Prakash's wife is caring but has a quirky side to her. And even though she doesn't approve of her husband's obsession with a star, she doesn't mind flexing in the front of whole colony when the husband is enjoying his 2 minutes of fame on news channels on TV. Diana Penty as Vijay's wife exists in the script only because there needed to be an emotional arch to the script and that the superstar can use that track to deliver an emotional speech in the climax. Other than that, Diana doesn't really get much scope to perform or showing her acting chops. Even her scenes with Akshay aren't anything great or something that will make you sit and take notice of their chemistry.

Talking of chemistry, I rather liked the song Kudiyee Ni Teri Vibe where Akshay grooves with Mrunal Thakur and the two set the screen on fire. Even the remixed version of Main Khiladi Tu Anari that comes in the end credit is a sure shot party number and not to be missed. In a nutshell, Selfiee ticks most of the boxes that Hindi film audiences look for. So, if you are fine with Akshay Kumar continuing to do Hindi remakes of films from the South, you would definitely enjoy Selfiee, even if you have seen the original Malayalam film. After all, isn't this what everyone is craving for - mass entertainers that can bring audiences back into theatres.

Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi film is not even trying to be more than it is

Selfiee movie review: this film has an interesting premise but it is never allowed to overshadow its larger-than-life hero akshay kumar himself..

selfie bollywood movie review

The good thing about Selfiee   is that it doesn’t pretend to be more than it is. The bad thing about it is that it is not even trying.

An interesting premise offering an opportunity to talk about the transience of fame, the meaning of it in the time of social media, the nature of genuine stardom, the manipulation of media, the pitfalls of petty egos, and whether Big Bad Bollywood is really all that big or all that bad, is explored, but not really allowed to overshadow its larger-than-life hero Akshay Kumar himself.

selfie bollywood movie review

Akshay even does a piece-to-camera at the start as himself, dedicating the film to the “fans”. And while the fans have reciprocated the film industry’s faith most recently in powering Pathaan to super-success, Selfiee is dishearteningly not as nice to its little man as it is to its big guy.

A remake of the Malayalam critical and commercial success Driving Licence, Selfiee has at its heart superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) and one of his most ardent fans, Om Prakash Aggarwal ( Emraan Hashmi ). A film shoot brings Vijay to Bhopal , and then to the RTO, as he needs a new driving licence for the climax shot. That also brings him to Om, Bhopal’s sole (it seems) RTO Inspector.

There is a third angle in the form of an actor who started out with Vijay but is now a nobody, doing ads for stuff like groin scratch cream etc. He reaches out to a tarot card reader (Kusha Kapila) in the hope of bringing Vijay “down to my level”. Meghna Malik is criminally misused as a corporator seeking her 15 minutes of fame, wherever she can get it.

Festive offer

A misunderstanding leads Vijay to humiliate Om in front of his seniors and his son, who dotes on the star equally. And Om swears payback.

Selfiee is unpredictable in the choices that Om – the quintessential good guy, family man – makes. As well as the pressures Vijay – the quintessential arrogant star, wannabe parent – faces. Hence, where the two will let their egos take them is interesting to follow, with Akshay’s impatient snapping and quiet seething effective, as is Hashmi’s helpless adulation. Up to a point.

As the film goes on and on, and the fights get ridiculously petty, Vijay and Om are reduced to children who need a good shaking down.

But then Selfiee comes in the wake of at least two incidents involving celebrities, who were hounded and almost manhandled by fans seeking to be photographed with them. So who says that in a world where the self is instant selfie, we have grown up?

At this point, it is safe to say that most in the audience are done with remakes. It has been a continuing season of remaking not just some super hit regional films, but Bollywood is now buying rights of foreign language films as well. Most times, the attempt goes futile as seldom do remakes manage to match up to the original.

Just last week, Kartik Aaryan hit the screens with his film Shehzada, the remake of Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo and the disappointment was just as massive as the hype the film had generated. Now, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi have teamed up for the remake of the Malayalam film, Driving Licence. Titled Selfiee, this one has actually managed to capture the essence of the original and is one that can be termed a ‘good remake’.

Much of the credit actually goes to Raj Mehta, who was able to take the original and mould it perfectly to suit the sensibilities of the Hindi film audience. What’s even better is that the director, who had collaborated with Akshay in Good Newwz, has been able to tap into his comic timings and make Vijay Kumar a shadow of how Akshay Kumar is. So, you see a character who is just like how fans see Khiladi Kumar to be and who is not afraid to take a few jibes at himself as well. So you have his wife, played by Diana Penty, making fun of the star’s ‘masoode wali smile’ and you will not be able to hold back the laugh and marvel at Kumar’s ability to take a joke on himself at the same time.

What makes the film better is the fact that he has an equally good opponent in Emraan Hashmi. Hashmi is spontaneous as the cop in the Road Transport Office, Om Agarwal, who has to get Kumar’s license done urgently. He requests for a selfie with the star at the office because he is a huge fan. The superstar, who feels Agarwal is a genuine fan, goes to meet him. But things go horribly wrong as the media turns up and things are blown out of proportion. What ensues is the two coming at loggerheads with one another. But who will win in this clash?

Watch the trailer here :

The film takes multiple turns. Is this a story of a common man trying to avenge an attack on his family? Is this about the misuse of power? Is this about how politics and the media play out and sensationalises otherwise simple things? Is this about the fallacy of human behaviour that stretches things that can easily be resolved? Is this about clash of egos? Well, it is about all of that combined. The makers carefully add comic relief throughout the film. Scenes, especially involving Akshay Kumar and his interaction with Meghna Malik invoke genuine laughs. Abhimanyu Singh also adds the perfect tadka to this concoction.

There is not much that the female leads have to do. We have Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty. While the former is shown as a homemaker who is shown in the most stereotypical way exaggerating about her husband's achievements, Diana's character is shown as more stronger as independent.

The mob sequence is what I feel could have been dealt with better. Without divulging too much, it is a sequence where a strong message of not losing one’s mind while being a fan could have been given. Was this muted to appease fans? We don’t know. But the scene could definitely have been better written.

The editing is crisp. The background music is on point and the film is enjoyable. The fact that Selfiee has taken the good parts from Driving Licence and given it a touch of its own is what makes this remake a good watch as well. If you are looking for a fun watch this weekend, you have one!

Selfiee

Selfiee Devesh Sharma, April 24, 2023

  • Times Of India

critic's rating:  3.5/5 Film stars are defined by their fans. The fans idolise them to no end and can go to crazy lengths to get an autograph or a selfie from the person they cherish. A star’s screen persona becomes real for a true fan. A male star, in particular, becomes a paragon of virtue as well as machismo. He becomes someone who can do no wrong. And his fans would willingly forgive him any wrongdoing, even murder. But what happens when scales fall off the eyes of a superfan? When he finally sees that his idol is as real and as flawed as him and not the god-like being he’s been worshipped as? Would the fan still shower love and respect or would move on? And what happens when their egos collide? Selfiee, which is an official remake of the Malayalam hit Driving Licence (2019),  starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu, tries to answer some of these questions and comes up with some quirky answers. There is a parable that says that for want of a nail, a kingdom was lost. That's kind of true in Selfiee’s case as well. Superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar), comes to Bhopal to shoot a film. The climax of the film requires certain permissions, which would only be granted if he has a valid driving licence. But he has lost his license, and due to circumstances, the new one hasn’t come on time. A local politician (Meghna Malik) promises to have one made in two days with the help of RTO sub inspector Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi), who is a big fan of Vijay Kumar.Om Prakash requests that Vijay comes early in the morning to the police station as a formality, but the press is tipped off about the visit. Vijay Kumar, who is emotionally on edge due to some personal issues, thinks that it’s Om Prakash who has called the press for his 15 seconds of fame. He berates the police officer in front of everyone, even his son. Humiliated, the officer vows to make the star pay for his actions. He accuses the actor of misusing his power and even goes on a fast against him. The media pounces on it all, and it soon becomes a circus. Things go out of hand when the policeman’s son gets hurt after a stone throwing incident. Now, the superfan is out to get the superstar, who is in danger of losing his popularity and career. How things get reconciled forms the crux of the story. Director Raj Mehta has kept things real. We see a star surrounded by a retinue all the time, struggling to find time to be himself for once and spend some quality time with his wife (Diana Penty). We see the belaboured producer hovering around, panic-eating all the time as the film’s budget goes for a toss, his condition worsening when his star starts getting bad press. We see a loyal secretary (Mahesh Thakur), the star’s only confidant, silently supporting his boss in the midst of an absurd situation which seems to be going out of hand, while his employer is shaken out of his comfort zone. The superstar is in a real fight, with all of his money and power failing to overpower a lowly sub inspector. The drama is buoyed by moments of slapstick delivered by Abhimanyu Singh, who acts as Vijay Kumar’s rival in the film. He’s a failed star who's been reduced to making TV commercials and is envious as hell of the superstar. Diana Penty acts as a concerned spouse with aplomb and really should have had a longer role. The same could be said of Nushrratt Bharuccha, who plays Emraan’s nagging wife. Abhimanyu Singh has been known for his serious roles, and it was fun to see him try his hand at physical comedy. Emraan Hashmi has let go of his star’s mantle and stuck to being a character throughout. Barring his attempt at getting the Bhopal accent right, he has given a sincere performance as a heartbroken superfan out for revenge. His confrontation scenes with Akshay Kumar are the soul of the film. Akshay Kumar clearly had a ball playing a sanitised version of himself. He has managed to convey the vulnerability of a superstar, and has given a believable performance as an idol who gets a shock to his system but comes back stronger because of it. Watch the film for the interplay between Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, as well as for the comedy and the inside jokes. Akshay is sorely in need of a hit, and let’s hope Selfiee, his most meta film as yet, manages to start the new year on a high note for him.

Trailer : Selfiee

Dhaval roy, february 24, 2023, 1:30 pm ist.

Selfiee story: While filming a movie in Bhopal, a hotshot star, Vijay Kumar, urgently requires a driver’s licence to complete his shoot on time. However, a misunderstanding with the motor vehicle inspector, Om Prakash, leads to a feud of sorts between the two. Vijay's ardent fan turns his foe as he insists that the hero must legally procure the licence like any commoner, which may take up to a month. But Vijay must leave for the US within a week. Will he bag the licence before he takes off? Selfiee review: Does a small-town traffic cop, Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi), taking on a megastar, Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar), over a driver’s licence seem like an overstretch? Maybe. But the punchlines and performances in the remake of 2019 Malayalam film, Driving Licence , may make you overlook the feeble premise. A nod to Akshay's stardom, with a movie called Don’t Angry Me, references to the scores of projects he does each year, being called a producer’s actor, and even his ‘jabde wali smile’ are delightful to watch. But Emraan's turn as a super fan-turned-nemesis is equally noteworthy. He has a tight grip on his role, as he firmly maintains the middle-class and humble man act even when doing heroic things. One downside, though, is his Bhopali accent dropping intermittently. Director Raj Mehta, who reunites with Akshay after Good Newwz , handles the movie’s first half adeptly, keeps it entertaining and breezy, and peppers it with hilarious one-liners that the actor delivers effortlessly. However, the second half, which centers around the face-off between the two heroes, is not as high on humour. It's watchable, nevertheless, even if the parts that revolve around the licence test are a bit stretched. The outing also takes a dig at the trial by media phenomenon and the #BoycottBollywood movement. But, depicting instances of loud electronic media coverages is becoming repetitive and stale in our movies. While the main leads shine, Abhimanyu Singh as a fading superstar Suraj and Meghna Malik as the starstruck corporator, Kamla Tiwari, are more than impressive. Abhimanyu is hilarious as Vijay’s erstwhile roomie and someone now stuck spewing cringe-worthy lines for shady films and ads. After a couple of instances, though, his parts seem forced. Social media influencer Kusha Kapila, in a cameo as a tarot card reader, does a good job. But Meghna stands out, especially with her impeccable comic timing in scenes with Akshay. Diana Penty as Vijay’s , Naina, doesn't have much of a role to play here but whatever capacity she can plays the classy and supportive wife does well. Nushrratt Bharuccha, who is familiar with the comedy genre, manages to pull off the act of a young Bhopali woman and Om Prakash’s better half, Minty, well. Anu Mailik and Tanishk Bagchi's ‘Main Khiladi’ redux is dance-worthy, and Lijo George-DJ Chetas's title track, as well as Vikram Montrose’s ‘Sher,’ are pumped up. Overall, Selfiee is an easy-breezy watch, with some good performances and several laugh-out-loud moments. If you're looking for a rib-tickling comedy over the weekend, this one could be a good pick.

Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi Face Off in an Enjoyable But Overtly Dramatic Film

Selfiee (2023) movie review, cast and release date: Action comedy drama starring Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi star in this Bollywood movie that has released in a theatre near you.

Recently, a fan trying to click a selfie with Sonu Nigam at a concert resulted in a major scuffle, a police case and made headlines for several days. Cricketer Prithvi Shaw is currently locked in a legal battle with a social media influencer, who got into a major fight with the player and allegedly vandalised his car after he refused to click selfies with her.

In the age of Instagram likes, the act of clicking a selfie with a star is a much more serious matter than it should have been. The fan assumes the right to demand, and the star seems to have no right to refuse.

These incidents have uncannily occurred very close to the release of the Raj Mehta-directed film, Selfiee, where a fan’s wish to spend 5 minutes with his idol and click one photo snowballs into massive drama played out in front of national media.

Selfiee – remake of Malayalam comedy-drama Driving Licence

The film is a remake of the Malayalam comedy-drama Driving Licence. I haven’t watched the original so I cannot comment on how good a remake this is. But it definitely has the Raj Mehta comedy signature all over. Selfiee is in the same space as his Good Newwz and Jugjugg Jeeyo – both popular comedies anchored on relevant issues.

selfie bollywood movie review

RTO Inspector Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is a huge fan of superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar). But this fan turns foe when a small misunderstanding gets blown out of proportion. From then on, it becomes an ego tussle between a superstar and a common man, who take turns in outwitting one another.

Slapstick and forced comic situations notwithstanding, the film brings up some very relevant issues. Cancel culture, boycott Bollywood, fake social media trends, trial by media – the makers have packed in everything in order to make it a total entertainer. The two songs in the beginning and end credits are also engaging.

Selfiee – Funny dialogues, enjoyable moments

Selfiee is enjoyable in parts. Some dialogues will make you chuckle. Akshay gets a lot of screen space to flaunt his superstar swag, while Emraan Hashmi tries his best to look and sound believable as an RTO inspector in Bhopal. Unfortunately, the setting is too sanitised for him to look real. Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, Adah Sharma have small parts to play. Why would an actor like Abhimanyu Singh take up the role of Suraj Dewan, beats me.

There are several exaggerations and over-dramatisations that the script depends on to take the story forward. If Om Prakash had spoken up at the very beginning, the issue would probably have been solved right there. But then, he wouldn’t have picked a fight to restore his self-respect and a dramatic battle with the country’s biggest star wouldn’t have ensued. And so, that logic has to be suspended.

Lot of real life references

The film does take a stand in favour of the film stars, to show how vulnerable their reputation is in the hands of the media and the public. At the same time, it also highlights the fickle-minded mob, which one day bays for blood and next day worships the same actor, as soon as he manages to gain some sympathy. When Akshay Kumar high-jumps into an angry mob to save Emraan Hashmi, the director makes it clear who the real hero is. It’s the star who wins, at the end of the day.

Selfiee Movie REVIEW:

We have seen movies on the common man vs politicians, and the common man vs nation. We have also seen the movie on common man vs superstar, for example, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan. It is a done-and-dusted movie and yet, Selfiee has a unique style and charm that can impress the audience. The one-word review for the movie would be entertaining. Selfiee is about a superstar and a die-hard fan who lock horns with each other for a selfie. The film showcases how a fan who loves and idolise his superstar tries to bring his superstar down after a series of misunderstandings.

It showcases the epic face-off between the star and a fan is hell entertaining. Interestingly, since you know both the sides of the story, you actually start rooting for both Vijay Kumar and Om Prakash Agarwal. Well, that’s how the story grabs your attention despite rolling out a predictable story. It is quite evident that what is going to happen next; however, Raj Mehta makes the face-off so interesting that you forget about the other aspects.

Considering that it is a Raj Mehta directorial venture featuring Akshay Kumar, we saw the right amount of humour that will surely tickle your funny bone. For really psyched me was to see full masala movie that too coming from Mehta who is often seen making family dramas. From exhibiting Akshay’s larger-than-life superstar character to the epic face-off, Selfiee is indeed an entertaining watch.

Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar needs to obtain a new driving license from the RTO officer, Om Prakash Agarwal, a diehard fan of Vijay. But a series of misunderstandings lead to a war of words between the two, eventually escalating into a feud which is played out in front of the media and the entire country. Does Vijay get his driver’s licence? Will the face-off between the star and the fan resolve?

Star Performances:

Akshay Kumar is the star of the film for sure. He essays the role of a superstar Vijay Kumar and trust me, he lives like his real-life character in the movie with a few changes and that’s the best part about his character. In the movie, Vijay says that he has no time for anything as he has to make 5-6 movies and 2 OTTs and several brand endorsements and that’s exactly what Akshay Kumar is known for. It is quite funny to keep that aspect in his character which is also giving it back to the trolls who have been criticising him for doing so many films.

I liked how Raj Mehta kept his character genuine and subtle instead of going all loud and berserk as he is a superstar. Akshay doesn’t just play his part but lives it like a genuine superstar. I loved how his character was not loud and unreasonable as he plays a superstar. Raj Mehta kept the raw and real side of him and that’s when you feel the connection. You will feel like hooting at every Akshay Kumar style, his unique walk, his swag and his charm.

Emraan Hashmi essays the role of RTO officer Om Prakash Agarwal who is a die-hard fan of superstar Vijay Kumar. Emraan impresses me with his performance in the movie. From being vulnerable and hopeless to being a stern and sharp officer, Emraan does a fab job of bringing out the cunning and innocent side of the character.

On the other hand, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty have given a reasonable performance in their limited screentime. They are not shown much in the movie and have nothing significant to offer but they do demand attention.

Direction/Screenplay:

Raj Mehta, director of Selfiee, seemed to have tried his hands at making a full masala entertainer and must say, it turned out to be quite good. Looking at his previous films, Good Newwz and JuggJug Jeeyo, we got a light-hearted family entertainer; however, when it comes to Selfiee, it seems like Raj Mehta also tried his hands on giving the audience a full-blown commercial movie. From using slow-motion shots, larger than life songs to swag-loaded actions, Raj went out and about with Selfiee which was quite eye-grabbing for me. Considering that I have not seen such things before, it was surely an entertaining watch.

Drawbacks :

First and foremost, Selfiee gives a predictable story, you just know what’s going to happen next or who did what. There are quite a few scenes that were a letdown, thus, making the movie a little unreal and too made up. Yes, Bollywood films are to be enjoyed more than finding logic in them; however, some were too far from being realistic. Since when media are allowed in the RTO office? Since when school children are made to watch TV during school hours? How come there was no action taken on people who raised a hand to the public servant that is the police officer? A fight for a simple license seems like an over dramatic but it is an entertaining watch.

Speaking about the story, yes, it can get a little over-the-top or overtly dramatic but it will surely leave you with a happy smile. Yes, the concept of a superstar vs a common man is and dusted formula but the execution and storyline surely bring freshness to the script. Raj Mehta’s sole reason was always giving the audience a light-hearted movie that stays with you forever and Selfiee is no exception.

Conclusion :

Overall, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi starrer Selfiee is genuinely an entertaining watch with a few hits and misses. Even though it gets a little predictable from the start, you will still enjoy it. Watch it for the smashing performances by Akshay and Emraan as well as for Raj Mehta’s direction which will surely leave you starstruck.

Best of fans … Stan Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in Selfiee.

Selfiee review – stan v superstar caper is a copper-bottomed crowd pleaser

Director Raj Mehta’s professionally packaged comedy hits all the bright, wacky notes, just don’t expect anything more than sheer daftness

A fter the monumental success of Pathaan , something a little more low-rise. Director Raj Mehta has emerged as Bollywood’s best-placed continuity candidate, landing one of the industry’s last pre-pandemic hits with 2019’s babymaking romp Good Newwz, before resuming with post-lockdown marital farce Jug Jugg Jeeyo. His latest expands upon the 2019 Malayalam hit Driving Licence, with its copper-bottomed premise: a movie star is driven nuts by the superfan schooling him in three-point turns. Another broad, sitcom-bright crowdpleaser, prone to abusing the wacky sound effect button, this latest Mehta comedy has nevertheless been packaged with a professionalism that’s hard to deny.

Crucially, Mehta gets his script right. Regular scribe Rishhabh Sharrma ensures this feud, between unsmiling action hero Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) and moustachioed jobsworth Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi), develops organically from an early misunderstanding around the former’s surrogacy plans. It flares, wildly but not implausibly, into a 24-hour media storm encompassing weaponised hashtags, cancellation cries and angry mobs. Fixing one eye on the madness of moviemaking in modern India possibly explains why some stretches are played with an oddly stiff bat: Sharrma’s sharper satirical barbs risk drawing blood too close to home. (In an opening, out-of-character address, the actual Kumar nervily maintains no slight is hereby meant on his real-life superfans.)

Still, it is well played, within certain parameters. Other halves Diana Penty and Nushrratt Bharuccha are left looking on in cowed awe as the leads go mano a mano; in this Mehta appears fustily traditional. Yet Kumar and the ever-sly Hashmi spar well, and Abhimanyu Singh is hilarious as a rival thesp plotting Vijay’s downfall while making the world’s worst celebrity endorsements. A moderate timekiller, Selfiee earns goodwill with the sheer daftness of its final act, featuring a televised theory test and pro-celebrity parallel parking. But it may be time to reassess 2016’s Fan, one of Shah Rukh Khan’s pre-Pathaan flops: a film that proved far more daring in pitting superstar against stan.

Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar Was Almost There With The Self-Deprecatory Humour But…

Just hear me out.

selfie bollywood movie review

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, Mahesh Thakur, Abhimanyu Singh, Meghna Malik, Kusha Kapila

Director: Raj Mehta

Selfiee Movie Review:

What’s Good: The typical Akshay Kumar trademark comedy in some scenes

What’s Bad: The typical ‘tweaking’ in copy-pasting the already tried & tested script making certain things worse than the original

Loo Break: Songs & whenever you need to!

Watch or Not?: Only if you haven’t seen the original (Driving License) you’ll have a bright chance to enjoy some scenes

Language: Hindi

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 143 Minutes (Yep, that number ironically denotes ‘I Love You’ but sorry, this is going to be ‘ek-tarfa pyaar’)

Before the movie started, we all saw Akshay Kumar’s recorded message about how this is dedicated to his fans and how he’s nothing without them, but then he goes on to do films like these to disappoint not all but a considerable chunk of them. He plays Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar), a superstar who is worshipped by his fans and one his biggest fans in RTO Inspector Om Prakash Agarwal’s (Emraan Hashmi) love for him is dubiously termed as ‘bhakti’.

Star wants a driving license for a car-based scene shoot, RTO officer wants a harmless selfie with his favourite star but things change when Vijay reaches the RTO office. Who has done what and why forms the major crux of the film which revolves around a cat-and-mouse game being played by the ‘Khiladi’ & ‘Anari’.

Selfiee Movie Review:

Selfiee Movie Review: Script Analysis

Mehta’s trusted writer Rishhabh Sharrma ( Good Newwz , Jugjugg Jeeyo) adapts & modifies the screenplay of Lal Jr’s Malayalam film Driving License led by Prithviraj Sukumaran for Akshay Kumar’s Hindi remake. Okay, this may sound insane, but, hear me out. The comical relief of the film comes also from Akki cracking self-deprecated jokes, why didn’t they take it a step ahead? When you can talk about his ‘masoode’ ruining his smile, joke about his commitment to do millions of projects every year, and make a doctor criticize his ‘massy’ script sense, then why did you restrict the story only to the source material available beforehand?

Why this can’t be a story of a story who somehow forgets to renew his passport & fails with extreme difficulty in renewing it owing to his dual citizenship (India & Canada, maybe?)? Why not completely redesign the project retaining just the narrative’s soul of a public war between a superstar and his die-hard fan? I know it’s easy to pen and difficult to execute, but isn’t that the same as remaking an already-loved movie?

Anurag Kashyap’s guy Rajeev Ravi (Dev D, Gangs Of Wasseypur) keeps it pretty basic when it comes to cinematography. Apart from a couple of routine action sequences, there’s nothing really to boast about how the film ‘looks’. Ritesh Soni’s editing is of no help letting the second half drown into oblivion.

Selfiee Movie Review: Star Performance

Akshay Kumar’s obsession over his lucky number 9 continues with his character Vijay driving Cars with numbers like 4545 or 0909, and even his driving license form states his address as ’27’ Pali Hill. Most of the time, due to the film’s self-deprecatory humour, it almost looks like Akshay is breaking the fourth wall to talk to the viewers. This is something Akshay can do while sleepwalking, the performance doesn’t boost the dragging narrative. He retains his best self while delivering a few genuinely hilarious lines but unfortunately that’s not enough.

Emraan Hashmi’s Om’s star-worshipping isn’t really built well to develop a connection solely depending on his performance. It would be really hard for the non-fans to completely understand what is he going through. The transformation of Om from a die-hard fan to a failed father to a revengeful RTO Inspector fails to evoke any kind of emotions apart from “just end this already?”

Nushrratt Bharuccha & Diana Penty as respective housewives of Emraan & Akshay have nothing to do in the film apart from making sure their husbands don’t f*ck up. Extremely fit & the 53-year-old handsome Mahesh Thakur barely gets any footage and it’ll puzzle me forever, how can you take someone as talented as him without giving him some meaty jokes? Abhimanyu Singh’s character writing is hilarious leading to some rib-tickling scenes, leaving the best for the last. ‘Corporator’ played by Meghna Malik relies heavily on her natural performance bringing the best out of the character. Kusha Kapila is just there, yet again.

Selfiee Movie Review:

Selfiee Movie Review: Direction, Music

Raj Mehta should stick to the original scripts for his skills to flourish. You definitely see bits of him in the comedic pieces of the film but that’s about it, it’s a pretty generic attempt otherwise. I’d decode the above line for you, Mehta fails to handle the ‘masala’ portions of Vijay Kumar but nails the gut-busting scenes of Superstar Suraj (played by Abhimanyu Singh).

People like Tanishk Bagchi, Yo Yo Honey Singh, The PropheC, Lijo George, DJ Chetas, Vikram Montrose, Aditya Yadav, Tarun & Anu Malik (for Main Khiladi Tu Anari remake) came together for the songs but couldn’t deliver a single track that could be in my playlist for even a week. PropheC’s Vibe is ruined by making it the ‘for the sake of hook line’ song (When you hear the original, the song starts with the hook line bringing the early high which the film version fails to achieve).

Selfiee Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Selfiee could be true to the original but that’s also somewhere its weak point. The film shines when it doesn’t ‘try’ to copy and that’s why this needed a cosmetical makeover from not only outside but inside as well.

Selfiee Trailer:

Selfiee releases on 23rd February, 2023.

Selfiee Review: An Unabashed Akshay Kumar Show

Selfiee review: with none of the characters allowed to evolve, emraan hashmi is compelled to struggle to create his space in the film..

Selfiee Review: An Unabashed Akshay Kumar Show

Akshay Kumar in Selfiee . (courtesy: YouTube )

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty

Director: Raj Mehta

Ratin g: Two stars (out of 5)

Script isn't King in Selfiee . It is an unabashed Akshay Kumar show. The star leaves absolutely nothing to chance. He stamps himself on everything that the vapid film has on offer. The narrative (derived from the late Sachy's screenplay) is tweaked and stretched to make space for an actor in search of a hit. But nothing clicks.

Selfiee is the Hindi remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Driving Licence . The vehicle never fully revs up because the star, to the detriment of the movie, concedes no ground at all to things that might have mattered. The chintzy concoction runs into an obstacle course and finds a way out of it.

A movie megastar desperately seeking a driving licence runs afoul of an inveterate fan, a Regional Transport Office (RTO) inspector in Bhopal. As the fan-turned-foe queers the pitch, the celebrity's grand plans, both personal and professional, are in danger of going into a tailspin. But can the power of a common man be a match for the clout of a movie star?

There is much in Selfiee that goes awry because large swathes of the film are painfully pointless. If the film is meant to be an exploration of fame and adulation and their manifestations or an examination of what happens when a slighted movie fan decides to strike back, it only manages to deliver a blurred picture. As shallow as it is silly, Selfiee does not get its focus right.

Akshay Kumar's home banner, Cape of Good Films, is one of the producers of the film along with Dharma Productions, Prithviraj Productions (the original lead actor's outfit) and Magic Frames (a key backer of the Malayalam film). The film understandably does all it can to not let the spotlight stray away from the protagonist. The effort yields a massive wreck that is beyond salvation.

To be fair, Selfiee , directed by Raj Mehta ( Good Newwz, Jugjugg Jeeyo ), is certainly not as excruciatingly bad as some of Akshay Kumar's recent releases. But, then, can it ever be easy to be as a godawful as Bachchhan Paandey, Raksha Bandhan and Ram Setu ? Selfiee may try your patience, but it does not overly offend one's sensibilities the way his other films tend to.

In Driving Licence , the character of the film producer (who frets over going overbudget and running late) and the superstar's rival (envious of his string of hits) were believable figures. In Selfiee , the former is at best a frisky hanger-on. The latter is worse - a pathetic buffoon whose only job in the film is to make the protagonist look much better than he actually is.

Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar), reigning Bollywood superstar who has a passion for fast cars, lands in Bhopal for the shoot of a film. For its climax, he has to furnish a driving licence in order for the film unit to secure the necessary permissions from the authorities. He does not have one.

RTO inspector Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi) and his son are diehard fans of the star. They religiously watch every film of his and dance noisily to his songs much to the chagrin of the inspector's wife (Nushrratt Bharuccha), who adores Vijay Kumar's rival Suraj Diwan (Abhimanyu Singh). When their idol arrives in town, father and son are thrilled to bits.

To fast track the issuance of his driver's licence, Vijay agrees to take time off from his schedule and visit the RTO to pose for a selfie with Om and his wide-eyed son. But matters go horribly wrong and the star gives the unsuspecting inspector a mouthful.

Angered and humiliated, the obdurate policeman decides to settle scores by giving the actor a tough time. The face-off between the two men constitutes the crux of the corny film that, in the garb of examining fandom and celeb entitlement, is mindful never to deviate from the purpose of giving the superstar - a gentleman, a good professional, a model citizen, a caring husband and a do-gooder - the upper hand.

Vijay Kumar is an epitome of perfection. Nothing that is thrown the unflappable man's way can stop him from doing the right thing. The film always seems more about Akshay Kumar than about the character that he plays is on the screen. Vijay Kumar is described as a producer's actor. Akshay Kumar is producer-actor. Therein lies the rub.

Meta elements make their way into the narrative but to no lasting effect. Like everything else in Selfiee , they add up to little beyond varnishing the star's persona. The hero's gummy smile is made the butt of a good-natured joke by his wife (Diana Penty).

A little later in the film, Vijay Kumar (speaking for the fictional figure as well as for Akshay Kumar) cockily reminds the stubborn inspector that he has no time to waste because he has an enormous number of commitments - films, web shows, product endorsements and reality shows.

A broadside at the boycott Bollywood brigade - which goes berserk when the clash between the megastar and a honest inspector catches the attention of the electronic media - falls flat because nothing in Selfiee is allowed to come in the way of the progress of Akshay Kumar.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

With none of the characters allowed to evolve, Emraan Hashmi is compelled to struggle to create his space in the film. He does occasionally manage to rise above the din - the ear-splitting background score contributes to the decibel level - despite the odds being heavily loaded against him.

As for the two female actors in Selfiee - Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty, playing the wives of the two warring men - they are mere adjuncts. They are after all in an Akshay Kumar movie, akin to a two-and-a-half-hour selfie dedicated to a self-obsessed star. Unless you are a fan, it would be best to give Selfiee a miss.

Selfiee Review:

Virendra Mishra

Link Copied

Selfiee Review in Hindi Amar Ujala News Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi Raj Mehta Dharma Productions

Selfiee Review in Hindi Amar Ujala News Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi Raj Mehta Dharma Productions

Selfiee Review in Hindi Amar Ujala News Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi Raj Mehta Dharma Productions

Selfiee Review in Hindi Amar Ujala News Akshay Kumar Emraan Hashmi Raj Mehta Dharma Productions

Movie Review | Selfie: An unworthy remake of ‘Driving License’

selfie bollywood movie review

The country was introduced to some amazing cinema this side of the Vindhyas when Covid got us indoors. One such movie that appreciated pan-India was the 2019 Jean Paul Lal creation, ‘Driving License’.

It was a wonderful idea to recreate the experience a few years later. The news that Bollywood would reappraise the film was taken arguably with a degree of skepticism.

Three years down the line, armed with hope and a ticket (the promos notwithstanding) even as you adjust to the comfort of the theatres, ‘Selfie’ hits you and screams at you.

This is a textbook case of contrast. It was just a week ago that I advocated the avoidance of comparison of an original Telugu hit with the Hindi remake. Time to eat humble pie. The U-turn I make is largely circumstantial and a near compulsion consequent to the heavy-duty mess at the pre and production stages of the remake.

Lal gave us a simple engaging tale of the unwitting ego clash between a popular film star and his fan when a fan moment goes wrong. Shot in Kerala the cinematography was a script in itself and the performances were perfect.

Raj Mehta ups the scale and downs the intrinsic value of the story. The resultant experience is a yawn of a mainstream Bollywood film which if initial signs are anything to go by, is going to add to the trend of Akshay films at the Box Office in recent times.

Exaggeration is perhaps inevitable in the art of cinema. The art is also in knowing where to draw the line and how much should a tight script be revisited under the guise of going pan India. On multiple counts the filmmaker flounders.

Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is an inspector at the RTO in Bhopal. He and his son Gabbu (Neev Ahuja) are great fans of popular Bollywood star Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar). Vijay Kumar comes to Bhopal for a shoot. He realizes that though he loves driving swanky cars, he needs a driving license. He even agrees to go to the RTO and extend the privilege of a selfie with the overzealous inspector. Things go wrong. Terribly wrong. Also against the backdrop is another aging actor Suraj Diwan (Abhimanyu Singh) who dreams of a hit film that has eluded him.

The ego clash between Vijay and Agarwal gets blown out of proportion and is in the public domain. Both take stances difficult to withdraw from and every step is monitored by the paparazzi and the media. Public opinion exhibits swift mood changes from favouring the inspector to siding with the actor who plays mind games. In a span of 143 minutes of which over 20 is expended on establishing that Akshay is a star, the film exaggerates where the original strived to keep things simple.

While Prithviraj and Kuruvilla Joseph built up the crisis with measured moves and amazing acting, Akshay goes over the top and Emran is chopped to a minimal space. Resultantly, the marinated script completely loses steam. The exaggerated narration robs the adaptation of the required punch that made the original a near masterpiece and this a very poor copy.

Akshay Kumar had a wonderful opportunity to re-examine his artistic space and emulate Prithvi. Unfortunately, he is so full of himself - a probable justification being that he is playing a mainstream star that he is. His one-liners work but not much after that.

Also, age is beginning to show and his action belies his age. There was a time when the media was rife with stories of him being a star who interfered with the role of his co-stars. The truth or otherwise of this natter cannot be proved. In this outing, however, the lack of balance in the space occupied by the two actors is the principal undoing of the film.

Did the film lose itself in the script for trying too much when it had the tempting alternative of playing true to the original and traveling out of it only to match a pan-India context? Did the script (Rishhabh Sharma) do too much to impress and make a difference?

Also, I suspect that Mukesh Chhabra, the casting in charge, could have taken some wrong calls. To start with Disha Penty as the wife of the film star, even in the limited space looks unfit. Nushrat Bharucha as the wife of the inspector is all right though the script offers her just nothing. Among the others who have some screen space, we have Abhimanyu Singh who tries hard to look like an embarrassment and achieves it. What was the creative crew doing with him would remain an unsolved mystery. Meghna Malik as the overzealous corporator is good as is Mahesh Thakur as the secretary of the actor.

As stated before Akshay stretches too far and in the process disturbs the needed balance. The star power as an undercurrent was so suavely depicted by Prithviraj. Difficult to emulate, perhaps it was a conscious call to contrast rather than extend the role in the remake.

Could the casting director have chosen someone like Ajay Devgn for the role is a moot question but I cannot help but believe that one huge pothole in the film is the manner in which the role of Vijay Kumar ultimately evolves. In direct contrast is the role of Emran Hashmi. He is seen as some designed trivial contrast with the script loaded in favour of the star. Could a stronger actor like Raj Kumar Rao blended into the narrative is another moot question. Given the director’s right to take the call (commercial or creative), the lopsided presentation of the characters is the undoing of ‘Selfie’.

Akshay Kumar now holds a Guinness record (as reported in this daily) for the maximum number of selfies. The success may well end there. Otherwise for those who have watched ‘Driving License’ and the superlative performances from Kuruvilla Joseph and Prithviraj, this is a loud and soulless remake.

Selfiee Review: Akshay Kumar has been facing back-to-back flops with Ram Setu, Cutputli, and Rakshabandan and now he needs a solid hit. Without losing hope he has set up a solid lineup with releases and he now come up with this film called Selfiee. Selfiee is a remake of Malayalam’s Driving Licence. Selfiee raised expectations since Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi share screen space and once the trailer was released the expectations got two-fold, however, carrying with the humongous expectations, the film has finally been released and let’s get into the in-depth review and find out whether the film is worth watching or not.

A story set in Bhopal where Om Prakash (Emraan Hashmi) is the middle called motor inspector. He and his son are die-hard fans of superstar Vijay Kumar(Akshay Kumar). One day Om Prakash tries to get a selfiee but Vijay Kumar doesn’t care about them and Om Prakash’s ego hurts, eventually, Vijay Kumar lost his driving license and Om Prakash has to approve then the misunderstanding leads to a cold war between Om Prakash and Vijay Kumar. Finally, did Vijay Kumar get his license approval? did Om Prakash get a selfiee need to be seen in the film?

Cast & Crew

Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, and others, and the film is directed by Raj Mehta, Rajeev Ravi is the cinematographer, Azeem Dayani is the music supervisor and the film is produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Aruna Bhatia, Supriya Menon, Karan Johar, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Apoorva Mehta & Listin Stephen under the banner of Dharma Productions.

Bollywood has been eyeing superhit films in other industries and remaking them, this scenario is been going on quite often in recent times. Recently there are many films Bollywood has remade and now it’s time for another film which is Selfiee, which is an official remake of the 2019’s Malayalam super hit film Driving Licence. Talking about the Selfiee well, the film starts off intrestingly by setting up the plot and introducing the two main characters.

Raj Mehta the director of Selfiee hasn’t changed anything as he kept all the scenes that the original version has which is a good thing though. Though the film has everything still it doesn’t excite you much coz a lot of people have already watched the original version on OTT. The core point the film may connect with the Hindi audience because it is relatable to every movie lover. Though the narrative has loose ends Akshay Kumar and Emran Hashmi make you glued to the seats.

Akshay Kumar has superstar Vijay Kumar has does a brilliant job as his energy levels is just brilliant, Emran Hashmi as Om Prakash does a brilliant job as we have seen him mostly in romantic films but this middle father role quite new to him and he effortlessly pulled it off, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty does their part well as they doesn’t have much screen time to perform and rest of the cast did their best.

Raj Mehta sticks to the original version in a way he succeeded in presenting the story in quite an engaging way but he went a bit overboard in showing Vijay Kumar’s stardom in the film. Technically, Selfiee is good, and Azeem Dayani’s music is good but the background score should have been better, Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography took the film to next level.

Overall, Selfiee is an honest remake and a must-watch film for all sections of the audience.
