9. Stryker is in continuous pursuit of acquiring new companies to merge with and we have completed many successful acquisitions in recent years. Have you been a part of a corporate merger or acquisition in the past? How did this impact your work?

With Stryker continuing to purchase other organizations in the medical device industry successfully, your interviewer will be looking to hear if you have experience with this in the past and to hear how you handled it in your job.

If you have experience, talk about how it impacted your work and let your interviewer know that you kept an open mind to new processes and ways of doing things. If you don't have direct experience, reiterate that you are always open to new strategies and that you believe that acquisitions are the sign of a strong organization that you'd like to be a part of.

"When reading through your website, it was amazing to see the number of successful acquisitions Stryker has accomplished in recent years. Knowing that your organization is constantly pursuing new aspects of its business must be reassuring to you, and this is something I'd love to be a part of. My organization went through a merger about five years back in my current job. We merged our traditional air filter manufacturing business with a small auto filter manufacturing business that also made oil and fuel filters. For me, on the engineering side of things, I had to learn new products and manufacturing processes in a hurry, as the lines for the new products were coming to my plant six months after the announcement was made. During the transition period, I frequently traveled to the newly acquired manufacturing plant and worked with their engineering team on how we would merge. By keeping an open mind, I could learn and grow as an engineer and, looking back, this was an exciting point in my career even though it was scary at times."

"No, I have never been involved in a corporate merger in the past. I can imagine it would be disruptive to the employees at first. 10. In the medical device industry, it is important our teams are cohesive so we can continue to drive excellence. Tell me about a time you gave feedback to a peer.

The interviewer wants to know that you aren't shy about giving feedback to your peers to help them succeed since Stryker believes in accountability from their employees. Genuine leaders show their true colors by mentoring and supporting colleagues, not just by supporting and training direct reports. Show the interviewer that you care about the development of others and are not afraid to give feedback.

Focus on providing an example of your feedback to a coworker and the result. While describing the situation, do not reveal your colleague's name to protect their privacy.

"I noticed a peer was struggling with his communication with another leader. He would get very anxious and even out of breath when he told me about what was happening. One of the times that he was venting to me, I listened and then asked a few more questions to probe deeper. Through my questions, my colleague could think of a few strategies to try when working with this person in the future. The power of the question is mighty."

"We had bi-weekly team meetings and did a lot of brainstorming during that time. One of my colleagues came across as really negative and would quickly shoot down people's ideas, which deflated the energy in the team. I asked him to go for a walk with me and I told him how his behavior was being perceived. This feedback caught him off guard. However, because we were walking and our bodies were moving, it helped him to calm down and hear me. The interviewer wants to ensure that all your questions about the company or job role are answered during the interview. It is best to ask at least a question or two, showing the interviewer your eagerness to learn all you can. 21. At Stryker, our medical devices can truly change people's lives. Sometimes, though, a patient may have a question or concern about one of our devices. How have you handled a difficult customer interaction in a previous position?

The interviewer wants to know if you can handle the stress of a complex customer interaction. The customer could be a physician group who uses the medical device or an actual patient who has a question or concern about your product. Show the interviewer that you can stay calm under pressure and resolve the customer's problems.

"I am a leader in our department, so I take the calls that are escalated or too difficult for one of the other reps to handle. I had a customer yelling about how much money he spent on the device, which wasn't working. He was beyond the return date, so we couldn't give him a refund. I let him get all of his anger out and finish talking. I then asked him questions and always addressed him by his first name to try and build some rapport. I learned that he hadn't been to see his physician for his follow-up visit. We have relationships with the caregivers at one of the local facilities, so I was able to put him on hold and see when they had an appointment available. When I transferred him over to the scheduler, he had calmed down a bit. It wasn't a perfect scenario, but I tried to treat him with dignity and respect and not take it personally."

"I used to be a waitress in college, and dealing with difficult customers was my specialty. My coworkers would always give me the regulars who were cranky because I had a way of working with them that made it look easy. One evening, I had a customer who was very upset with his food order. I listened to his concern and asked him if he would like me to bring him something else, but he kept going on and on and was getting quite loud. I apologized again and told him I could give him a discount on his order or bring him another choice. He ended up taking the discount and leaving, but at least his volume went down, and he left. Difficult customer interactions don't always end perfectly, but I feel I handled the situation appropriately."

Stryker designs and manufactures products used all over the healthcare industry, including patient transport items, protective equipment for hospital staff, and devices used in operating rooms across the globe. No matter the product line, Stryker strives to put their customer's needs as a top priority, and they will expect you to be customer driven in your work. Talk about how you prioritize your customers in your career and reiterate to your interviewer that your job exists because of your customers. Consider the persistent methods you have used to connect with the decision maker to increase sales. Then, discuss these methods with the interviewer.

If you have experience connecting with the decision makers in large hospitals, highlight your expertise and methods used. If you do not have experience, discuss how you plan to connect with the right people in these large organizations.

"I have done B2B sales before, and my first step is looking at the CRM platform to see who the contact is. I reach out, and if that isn't the right person or that person has left, I do a LinkedIn search to see if I can figure out who is in that role now. I use many reach-out methods, including phone calls, emails, LinkedIn messages, and even dropping by the facility. By covering all of my bases, I can usually find the right person and figure out how our products can add value to their patients."

"I have a lot of industry contacts. In large hospital organizations, it is often the chief supply chain officer versus the chief medical officer that you need to start with. I reach out to some of my colleagues who have products in other spaces to see if they know who I should start with. Because of the relationships I have built, people want to help me and know I will help them. I think my connections could be really valuable to Stryker Ltd."

27. We value integrity in the workplace and foster an environment where our employees do what is right at all times, even when shortcuts may make life easier. Talk about a time when your integrity was challenged. How did you handle that situation?

Some would define integrity as doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking. Stryker holds integrity as one of its core values, and they expect their employees to work with honesty and integrity. For this question, your interviewer will be looking to get a sense of your integrity by having you talk about a time when it was challenged in the workplace.

Talk about a sticky situation you have been in and how you handled that. The situation could be many different things, but make sure it was one where someone was asking or requesting you do something that wasn't ethical, and you stood your ground to do what was right.

"In my first job out of college working as an electrical engineer, I was tasked to be on a project team that looked at the materials we were currently using to see if there were more cost-efficient alternatives. From the electrical perspective, a few of the cost-saving items would have potentially had hazardous safety impacts, and I didn't hesitate to speak up from my perspective. Sometimes, a more expensive product is worth the better materials, and the group wholeheartedly agreed. I was just glad I was asked to be a part of that team to give a voice from the engineering perspective."

"Working in the manufacturing setting, I can honestly say that my integrity has been challenged only a handful of times due to great policies and procedures that are in place from a manager's perspective. A couple of years ago, I had to terminate an employee I was pretty good friends with outside of work, and it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. We had worked side by side for many years before my promotion. After investigating poor performance on the job and walking through all of the disciplinary actions leading up to termination, I knew that we were making the right decision from the organization's perspective, which made walking through the termination much easier. The fact that we had documented and went through the proper disciplinary steps made the termination much easier on my employee, and we remain friends to this day outside of work."

28. At Stryker, we need outside-the-box thinkers to continue to innovate our company so we can stay competitive in the medical device industry. Tell me about a time you thought about something differently or proposed a new way of doing something.

The interviewer wants to learn about your creativity and ability to develop new ideas. Share your idea with the interviewer, if it was executed, and how the situation turned out.

You can use an example from a previous job or school. The interviewer wants to hear that you have creative ideas and are not afraid to suggest them to others, whether they decide to use or implement your ideas or not.

"I started at my company with a staff who had been there a long time. I'm a big believer in Lean Six Sigma principles and saw tons of waste in our process. I took time to get to know the people and fully learn the current process. Then I suggested new ways to streamline our operations, such as consolidating vendor agreements, leveraging some of our global contracts, and having people 'own' more of their process instead of handing it off to others. Because I had built relationships with the people in the department first, they were more open to the change. Within the first year, we produced 30% more revenue with no added staff because of the changes I recommended."

"As a new grad, I was on many project teams. There was an assignment in one of my marketing classes where we had to think about new solutions to generate leads for a real small business in our community. I did my homework on the company and researched the competitors and main demographic of the customers. I recommended doing a targeted re-targeting campaign on the largest competitor's website. They liked my idea and decided to give me a small budget to try out this campaign. I increased traffic to their website and the number of people who subscribed, so they were really pleased."

I then start carving out the 30/60/90 day plan and ask my leader for feedback to see if s/he agrees or has any other initiatives they believe are important that I've missed. Keeping the lines of communication open is very important at the beginning!"

"When starting a new job, I take the first few weeks to meet and get to know my team. I like to get to know their personalities, strengths, and weaknesses and see what challenges they are having. Once I understand my team and their challenges, I can devise my 60 and 90-day plans based on the information they have provided. Of course, I will discuss my 60 and 90-day plans with my manager to ensure I'm on the right track."

32. At Stryker, we believe in continuous feedback so we can all improve. When have you received constructive feedback?

All companies need people who can take criticism and give it without feeling weird or sensitive about it. Demonstrate to the interviewer how you have used a piece of constructive feedback to improve and get better.

Think of a time you received constructive feedback. Then, describe that situation with the interviewer and explain how that feedback helped you improve or change how you do things.

"In one of my reviews, I received feedback that I didn't delegate enough, making it seem like I didn't trust my colleagues. I took that feedback to heart. I took a look at my workload, which was high, and made some priority buckets. One bucket of work was very low-risk, and I distributed it to my team. One team member did a great job, so I was able to give her some of the more complex projects."

"I received feedback that everybody knows what I think from my nonverbal expressions, especially in meetings. That was tough feedback to hear. That entire next year, I worked very hard to ensure my facial expressions were positive and neutral versus worried or anxious, no matter what the content of the meeting was about. It was a tough exercise, but I'm glad I received the feedback, or I would not have known this."

33. At Stryker, we do a lot of cross-functional team projects. Tell me about a project team you've been on and your role.

If you thought group projects ended in college, you were wrong! Most organizations have their share of projects and day-to-day work, and Stryker is no different. Due to the large number of specialty medical products the organization produces, teams work cross-functionally. Walk the interviewer through a successful project where you played a significant role and had large ownership.

Describe a project you worked on and how your role led to the project's success. You want to include the other team members, as well, to show you are indeed a team player. However, you want your role in the project to stand out to the interviewer.

"At my company, I was selected to represent my department in a larger project team to implement a new CRM system. We met weekly, sometimes twice a week, for about 12 months. My role was to make sure our old CRM system data was converted into the new one and that it was organized in a useful way. I collaborated with IT and the project manager for the new system to ensure the data was useful and organized. When the new system launched, our old and rich data was there and useable so that we could maintain relationships with our customers seamlessly."

"In college, we had to do a big project in my Marketing class where we created an advertising campaign for a local business. I was in a group with four people, none of which I knew very well. We started talking to figure out where people's strengths were, and there was a more technical person, one who was an excellent presenter and communicator, a financial person, and me, the creative person. We all had our lanes but came together to help on the different pieces. We pitched our idea, and the business we had modeled wanted to implement the majority of our ideas."
