1. industry overview.

Fruit shake business is a subsidiary of the global fruit and vegetable processing industry and players in this industry are engaged in the processing and packaging of fresh fruits and vegetables into canned, bottled, frozen, dried (except sun-dried) or otherwise processed or preserved food products for human consumption.

Players in this industry also blend salt, sugar, preservatives and other ingredients with the fruits and vegetables to make them more appealing the taste buds.

A fruit shake is a thick, cold beverage made from blended raw fruit, vegetables or ice cream with other ingredients such as water, crushed ice, fruit juice, sweeteners (e.g. honey, sugar, stevia, syrup), dairy products (e.g. milk, yogurt, or cottage cheese, whey powder), plant milk, nuts, nut butter, seeds, tea, chocolate, herbal supplements, or nutritional supplements.

A fruit shake that contains dairy products is similar to a vegetable milkshake, though the latter typically contains less fruit and often contains ice cream or frozen yogurt.

A recent report published by IBISWorld shows that the Global Fruit and Vegetable Processing industry has experienced consistent demand over the five years to 2017, as economies of every size continue to consume processed fruit and vegetable products.

Demand has grown particularly fast in developing economies, as industrial growth has translated into greater urbanization, higher per capita income and expansion in the size of the middle class. As the global middle class has grown, it has demanded larger quantities of higher quality and more diverse food.

Over the five years to 2022, industry revenue is expected to expand. Industry demand is expected to increase as producers focus on nutritious ingredients and less invasive processing techniques to keep products as organic as possible. The report further revealed that the production of processed fruits and vegetables occurs in all regions of the globe.

In particular, low-tech fruit and vegetable processors such as fruit driers, exist in almost every country in the world. However, high-tech, large-scale fruit and vegetable processing operations are concentrated primarily in Europe and Asia.

These continents dominate the Global Fruit and Vegetable Processing industry due to the fact that industry operations have been established in these areas for a very long time.

The Global Fruit and Vegetable Processing Industry is indeed a very large industry and pretty much thriving in all parts of the world especially in developed countries such as United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Italy et al.

Statistics has it that in the world, there are about 32,123 licensed and registered fruit and vegetable processing companies directly responsible for employing about 507,446 employees. The industry rakes in a whooping sum of $290 billion annually with an annual growth rate projected at -0.1 percent.

It is important to state that Kraft Heinz is the establishment with a lion share of the available market in this industry. Lastly, if you are looking towards leveraging on the fruit and vegetable processing industry to generate huge income, then one of your best bet is to start a fruit shake company.

  • Many smoothie bars are offering healthy bowls, such as acai bowls made with acai berries, granola, and other ingredients like almond butter and yogurt.

Challenges in the smoothie industry include:

  • Rising food prices are cutting into profit margins.
  • Smoothie flavor trends are based on customer preferences and thus constantly changing, creating a need to continuously update menus. This also gives entrepreneurs regular opportunities to be inventive and creative.

How much does it cost to start a smoothie business?

Startup costs for a smoothie business range from $10,000 – $20,000. The largest expenses are for a deposit on a rental space, the preparation of the space, and equipment.

You could also start a food truck for around the same amount of money.

You’ll need a handful of items to successfully launch your smoothie business, including:

  • Refrigerator
  • Ice Machine
  • Blenders, juicers
  • Cutting boards, knives
  • Cups, straws, spoons
  • Tables and chairs

How much can you earn from a smoothie business?

smoothie business earnings forecast

Smoothie prices range from $3 to $10 or more, so let’s say yours will average $6. Your profit margin, after rent, overhead, and ingredients, should be about 30%.

In your first year or two as you’re building your business, you could sell 70 smoothies a day, bringing in more than $150,000 in annual revenue. This would mean $45,000 in profit, assuming that 30% margin. As your brand gains recognition and people start coming back for more, sales could climb to 150 smoothies a day. With annual revenue of nearly $330,000, you’d make a tidy profit of close to $100,000.

What barriers to entry are there?

There are a few barriers to entry for a smoothie business. Your biggest challenges will be:

  • The significant startup costs
  • Stiff competition from Planet Smoothie, Jamba Juice, Smoothie King, et al

Step 2: hone your idea.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting a smoothie business, it’s a good idea to hone your concept in preparation to enter a competitive market.

Market research will give you the upper hand, even if you’re already positive that you have a perfect product or service. Conducting market research is important, because it can help you understand your customers better, who your competitors are, and your business landscape.

Why? Identify an opportunity

Research smoothie businesses in your area to examine their products, price points, and what sells best, as well as customer reviews. You’re looking for a market gap to fill. For instance, maybe the local market is missing a vegan smoothie bar.

fruit shakes business plan

You might consider targeting a niche market by specializing in a certain aspect of your industry, such as exotic fruits, or more veggie-heavy smoothies.

This could jumpstart your word-of-mouth marketing and attract clients right away.

What? Determine your smoothie menu

You’ll need to develop a menu of items to offer. Look at what’s trending and come up with unique spins on those trends. In addition to fresh fruit juices, which most smoothie bars serve, here are some further suggestions:

  • Yogurt-based smoothies
  • Fresh fruit smoothies with exotic fruits and berries
  • Veggie-based smoothies such as cabbage or beet and berry
  • Soy or oatmeal-based smoothies with exotic fruits
  • Vitality bowls with protein, such as sweet potatoes
  • Smoothie bowls, such as acai bowls

You could also offer food items such as baked goods, power bars, organic snacks, and sandwich wraps.

How much should you charge for smoothies?

The average price of a smoothie is about $6, assuming you use quality ingredients. Bowls are in about the same price range. Your ongoing costs will be for ingredients, rent, overhead, and labor. You should aim for a profit margin of about 30%.

Once you know your costs, you can use this Step By Step profit margin calculator to determine your mark-up and final price points. Remember, the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.

Who? Identify your target market

Your target market will be health-conscious people, which is a broad category. You should spread out your marketing to include sites like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. You could also place flyers at local gyms, which you can find on Yelp or Google.

Where? Choose your business premises

You might start out with a smoothie truck, but at some point you’ll likely need to rent out a space, preferably one with a lot of foot traffic. Find commercial space to rent in your area on sites such as Craigslist , Crexi , and Instant Offices .

When choosing a commercial space, you may want to follow these rules of thumb:

  • Central location accessible via public transport
  • Ventilated and spacious, with good natural light
  • Flexible lease that can be extended as your business grows
  • Ready-to-use space with no major renovations or repairs needed

Step 3: Brainstorm a Smoothie Bar Name

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • Name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as “smoothie” or “smoothies”, boosts SEO
  • Name should allow for expansion, for ex: “Fresh Smoothie Sips” over “Superfood Smoothies”
  • A location-based name can help establish a strong connection with your local community and help with the SEO but might hinder future expansion

Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.

Find a Domain

Powered by GoDaddy.com

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that sets your business apart. Once you pick your company name, and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.

Step 4: Create a Smoothie Bar Business Plan

Here are the key components of a business plan:

what to include in a business plan

  • Executive Summary: Present a concise overview of your smoothie bar, highlighting its commitment to offering healthy, delicious smoothies in a convenient and trendy setting.
  • Business Overview: Describe the focus of your smoothie bar on serving a variety of fresh, nutritious smoothies, catering to health-conscious customers and those seeking quick, tasty refreshments.
  • Product and Services: Detail the range of smoothies offered, possibly including organic, vegan options, and additional health boosters like protein or superfoods.
  • Market Analysis: Evaluate the local demand for health-oriented beverages and snacks, identifying your target customer base, such as fitness enthusiasts or busy commuters.
  • Competitive Analysis: Compare your smoothie bar to other local cafes and juice bars, emphasizing unique features like specialized ingredients, custom blends, or a unique atmosphere.
  • Sales and Marketing: Outline your approach to attract and retain customers through social media marketing, loyalty programs, and community engagement events.
  • Management Team: Highlight the qualifications and experience of your team, focusing on their expertise in nutrition, food service, and business operations.
  • Operations Plan: Describe the day-to-day operations, including ingredient sourcing, smoothie preparation, and customer service protocols.
  • Financial Plan: Provide an overview of the financial aspects, including start-up costs, pricing strategy, and revenue projections.
  • Appendix: Include supplementary documents like supplier agreements, sample menus, or market research data that support your business plan.

If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.

Step 5: Register Your Business

Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.

Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!

Choose where to register your company

Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you’re planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to smoothie businesses.

If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind, it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.

Choose your business structure

Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your smoothie business will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.

Here are the main options:

types of business structures

  • Sole Proprietorship – The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
  • General Partnership – Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
  • C Corp – Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends, rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
  • S Corp – An S-Corporation refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. An S-Corp can be either a corporation or an LLC , which just need to elect to be an S-Corp for tax status. In an S-Corp, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.

We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes

The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identification Number , or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail or fax: visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.

Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.

The IRS website also offers a tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.

It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with your taxes to ensure you’re completing them correctly.

Step 7: Fund your Business

Securing financing is your next step and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:

jewelry store financing

  • Bank loans : This is the most common method but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and strong credit history.
  • SBA-guaranteed loans : The Small Business Administration can act as guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
  • Government grants : A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
  • Angel investors : Reach out to your entire network in search of people interested in investing in early-stage startups in exchange for a stake. Established angel investors are always looking for good opportunities.
  • Friends and Family : Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
  • Crowdfunding : Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer an increasingly popular low-risk option, in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
  • Personal : Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.

Bank and SBA loans are probably the best option, other than friends and family, for funding a smoothie business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept. Later, if you’re poised to grow into a smoothie franchise business, you may be able to attract angel investors.

Step 8: Apply for Smoothie Bar Business Licenses and Permits

Starting a smoothie business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments.

You may need the following, depending on the requirements in your area:

  • Food service license
  • Food handler’s permit
  • Building health permit

Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.

You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.

You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.

This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.

If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.

Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account

Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .

Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your smoothie business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple, and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.

Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.

Step 10: Get Business Insurance

Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.

Here are some types of insurance to consider:

types of business insurance

  • General liability : The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
  • Business Property : Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
  • Equipment Breakdown Insurance : Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
  • Worker’s compensation : Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
  • Property : Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
  • Commercial auto : Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
  • Professional liability : Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
  • Business owner’s policy (BOP) : This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of the above insurance types.

Step 11: Prepare to Launch

As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.

Essential software and tools

Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.

You may want to use industry-specific software, such as Café Cartel , EffiaSoft , or GoFrugal , to manage your inventory, purchasing, costs, recipes, and waste management.

  • Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , Freshbooks , and Xero .
  • If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences for filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.

Develop your website

Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.

You can create your own website using website builders . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech-savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.

Customers are unlikely to find your website, however, unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.

Here are some powerful marketing strategies for your future business:

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO) : Optimize your website content with relevant keywords to appear higher in search results, attracting potential customers more effectively.
  • Conversion Optimization : Refine website elements like calls to action to boost customer engagement and sales.
  • Facebook Marketing : Utilize Facebook’s targeted advertising to reach specific demographics, maximizing ad spend effectiveness.
  • Instagram Visibility : Leverage Instagram to showcase the vibrancy and health benefits of your smoothies to a wide audience.
  • Content Marketing : Create engaging blog posts, infographics, and videos to drive traffic to your website and social media pages.
  • Google Business Profile : Claim and optimize your listing to improve local search visibility.
  • Yelp and Local Directories : Maintain an active presence on Yelp and other directories to build trust and attract local clientele.
  • Event Sponsorships : Increase brand visibility by sponsoring local sports events, wellness fairs, or community gatherings.
  • In-store Events : Host smoothie-making classes or health talks to draw people into your store.
  • Local Partnerships : Collaborate with gyms, yoga studios, and health food stores for discounts or joint promotions.
  • Loyalty Programs : Encourage repeat business with a loyalty card or points system for regular customers.
  • Grand Opening Event : Host a grand opening with free samples, discounts, and entertainment to draw in crowds.

Focus on USPs

unique selling proposition

Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that sets it apart from the competition. Customers today are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they are able to quickly grasp how your smoothie business meets their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.

Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your smoothie business could be:

  • Sip to your health – fresh, organic veggie smoothies
  • A smoothie a day keeps the doctor away!
  • Skip the burger – have a smoothie or power bowl for lunch

You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain. But your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running a smoothie business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been in smoothies for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.

The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in smoothies. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership.

Step 12: Build Your Team

If you’re starting out small from a home office, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for a smoothie business include:

  • Store Clerks – make sales, prepare smoothies
  • General Manager – scheduling, ordering, staff management, accounting
  • Marketing Lead – SEO strategies, social media, other marketing

At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need.

Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.

Step 13: Run a Smoothie Bar – Start Making Money!

Smoothies are healthy, delicious, and a smart choice anytime, which is why it’s a $2 billion industry. Starting your own smoothie business is a great way to help people lead healthier lives, and you’ll make good money at the same time. Someday you might even have franchises across the country.  You’ve now got all the business know-how you need, it’s time to step up, create your business plan and start building your smoothie empire!

  • Smoothie Business FAQs

A smoothie business can be very profitable. Your gross profit margin on products can be as high as 70%, and after rent, overhead, and labor you should aim for a net profit margin of about 30%.

The key is offering inventive and delicious flavor combinations. Check out which flavors are trending and put your own unique spin on them. Do some experimenting and learn from trial and error.

The most popular smoothie can vary depending on personal preferences and trends. However, some popular smoothie flavors include strawberry banana, tropical fruit blends (such as mango, pineapple, and coconut), and green smoothies (typically made with spinach or kale).

The best flavor of smoothie is subjective and can vary from person to person. It’s essential to offer a variety of flavors to cater to different tastes and preferences. Classic flavors like strawberry, mango, or mixed berry are often well-received. Experiment with unique combinations and seasonal ingredients to create new and exciting flavor profiles.

Focus on using high-quality, fresh ingredients to create flavorful and nutritious smoothies. Offer unique and innovative flavor combinations that stand out from traditional options. Incorporate superfoods or functional ingredients that provide health benefits, such as chia seeds, matcha, or spirulina. Provide customizable options for customers to create their own smoothie combinations.

Keep track of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are locally available and incorporate them into your menu. Offer limited-time specials or seasonal smoothie combinations to create excitement and encourage customers to try new flavors. Experiment with holiday-inspired flavors, such as pumpkin spice in the fall or peppermint in the winter.

STEP 1: Plan your business

A clear plan is essential for success as an entrepreneur. It will help you map out the specifics of your business and discover some unknowns. A few important topics to consider are:

What will you name your business?

  • What are the startup and ongoing costs?
  • Who is your target market?

How much can you charge customers?

Luckily we have done a lot of this research for you.

Choosing the right name is important and challenging. If you don’t already have a name in mind, visit our How to Name a Business guide or get help brainstorming a name with our Smoothie Business Name Generator

If you operate a sole proprietorship , you might want to operate under a business name other than your own name. Visit our DBA guide to learn more.

When registering a business name , we recommend researching your business name by checking:

  • Your state's business records
  • Federal and state trademark records
  • Social media platforms
  • Web domain availability .

It's very important to secure your domain name before someone else does.

Want some help naming your smoothie business?

Business name generator, what are the costs involved in opening a smoothie business.

The amount you spend to open a smoothie business will depend on whether or not you franchise and which location you choose. From licensing to construction to equipment, smoothie business owners may pay anywhere from $10,000 to $650,000! These upfront costs include any and all of the following:

  • Rent/down payment
  • Licensing/legal costs
  • Marketing/advertising
  • Hiring costs

If you choose to franchise your location with a well-known national brand, you will pay more in terms of upfront costs. However, you’ll also enjoy free advertising and brand recognition from the moment you open. (People may be more willing to try a Jamba Juice than an independent store.)

What are the ongoing expenses for a smoothie business?

Ongoing expenses for a smoothie bar include the following:

  • Rent/utilities
  • Employee salaries
  • Equipment repair/replacement

Who is the target market?

The target market for a smoothie business typically includes anyone who wants to make their body healthier with ingredients that actually taste good. This can include hard-core fitness fanatics or dieters of course, but there’s a larger target market out there for those who want to live healthier lives. Anyone with high cholesterol or diabetes can supplement an unhealthy diet with smoothies as a means to get more nutrients in their life. It's a substantial opportunity to be a part of a national shift in the public perception of health food. However, smoothies are luxury food items, so owners may want to be careful about targeting lower-class neighborhoods.

How does a smoothie business make money?

Smoothie bars make money by setting profit margins on all of their menu items. The standard rule is to set menu prices at roughly three times what it costs for the raw ingredients, though the exact amount you charge will be based on location as much as this generic recommendation. People are typically willing to pay a premium for fresh, quality ingredients they may not be able to get in their local grocery shops.

The average price for a smoothie is typically around $5 for a small and $7 for a large. Fruit and yogurt bowls typically sell for around the same prices, while juices are around $4 to $7, depending on the size. Smoothies owners should look at their direct competitors to get a sense of the demand before determining prices.

How much profit can a smoothie business make?

Profits can vary depending on the location of the smoothie business. The average Jamba Juice takes in about $700,000 in annual revenue but considering it can cost up to $600,000 or more to open one, the numbers aren't quite as impressive. However, assuming it costs about $350,000 to run a smoothie store a year after initial start-up costs, owners can enjoy a comfortable profit margin on their business.

How can you make your business more profitable?

Popular smoothies business owners may want to consider opening their own food truck to take to busy areas with lots of thirsty people. They can also consider opening up a sit-down restaurant that serves a wider variety of healthy foods.

STEP 4: Open a business bank account & credit card

Using dedicated business banking and credit accounts is essential for personal asset protection.

When your personal and business accounts are mixed, your personal assets (your home, car, and other valuables) are at risk in the event your business is sued. In business law, this is referred to as piercing your corporate veil .

Open a business bank account

Besides being a requirement when applying for business loans, opening a business bank account:

  • Separates your personal assets from your company's assets, which is necessary for personal asset protection.
  • Makes accounting and tax filing easier.

Certain state permits and licenses may be needed to operate a smoothie business. Learn more about licensing requirements in your state by visiting SBA’s reference to state licenses and permits .

Most businesses are required to collect sales tax on the goods or services they provide. To learn more about how sales tax will affect your business, read our article, Sales Tax for Small Businesses .

Certificate of Occupancy

A smoothie business is generally run out of a storefront. Businesses operating out of a physical location typically require a Certificate of Occupancy (CO).  A CO confirms that all building codes, zoning laws and government regulations have been met.

  • If you plan to lease a location :
  • It is generally the landlord’s responsibility to obtain a CO.
  • Before leasing, confirm that your landlord has or can obtain a valid CO that is applicable to a smoothie business.
  • After a major renovation, a new CO often needs to be issued. If your place of business will be renovated before opening, it is recommended to include language in your lease agreement stating that lease payments will not commence until a valid CO is issued.
  • If you plan to purchase or build a location :
  • You will be responsible for obtaining a valid CO from a local government authority.
  • Review all building codes and zoning requirements for your business’ location to ensure your smoothie business will be in compliance and able to obtain a CO.

Food Regulations

When selling food, you will need licensing from a local health department; all establishments serving food are required to pass a health inspection. Tips for faring well on a health inspections

STEP 7: Get business insurance

Just as with licenses and permits, your business needs insurance in order to operate safely and lawfully. Business Insurance protects your company’s financial wellbeing in the event of a covered loss.

There are several types of insurance policies created for different types of businesses with different risks. If you’re unsure of the types of risks that your business may face, begin with General Liability Insurance . This is the most common coverage that small businesses need, so it’s a great place to start for your business.

Another notable insurance policy that many businesses need is Workers’ Compensation Insurance . If your business will have employees, it’s a good chance that your state will require you to carry Workers' Compensation Coverage.

FInd out what types of insurance your Smoothie Business needs and how much it will cost you by reading our guide Business Insurance for Smoothie Business.

STEP 8: Define your brand

Your brand is what your company stands for, as well as how your business is perceived by the public. A strong brand will help your business stand out from competitors.

If you aren't feeling confident about designing your small business logo, then check out our Design Guides for Beginners , we'll give you helpful tips and advice for creating the best unique logo for your business.

Recommended : Get a logo using Truic's free logo Generator no email or sign up required, or use a Premium Logo Maker .

If you already have a logo, you can also add it to a QR code with our Free QR Code Generator . Choose from 13 QR code types to create a code for your business cards and publications, or to help spread awareness for your new website.

How to promote & market a smoothie business

How you market will depend on who you want to cater to. Look for the right angle to appeal to your target demographic before you start trying to get the word out. For example, you may want to choose an online social media strategy aimed at fitness clubs. Or you may want to advertise to corporate workers who are looking for a quick lunch or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

How to keep customers coming back

Keep customers coming back by offering sensational tastes that they can’t necessarily recreate at home. Customers are looking for a clean establishment that’s fun and welcoming to visit. Keep looking for ways to impress your customers based on their feedback. Free samples or friendly smiles can be worth their weight in gold.

STEP 9: Create your business website

After defining your brand and creating your logo the next step is to create a website for your business .

While creating a website is an essential step, some may fear that it’s out of their reach because they don’t have any website-building experience. While this may have been a reasonable fear back in 2015, web technology has seen huge advancements in the past few years that makes the lives of small business owners much simpler.

Here are the main reasons why you shouldn’t delay building your website:

  • All legitimate businesses have websites - full stop. The size or industry of your business does not matter when it comes to getting your business online.
  • Social media accounts like Facebook pages or LinkedIn business profiles are not a replacement for a business website that you own.
  • Website builder tools like the GoDaddy Website Builder have made creating a basic website extremely simple. You don’t need to hire a web developer or designer to create a website that you can be proud of.

Recommended : Get started today using our recommended website builder or check out our review of the Best Website Builders .

Other popular website builders are: WordPress , WIX , Weebly , Squarespace , and Shopify .

STEP 10: Set up your business phone system

Getting a phone set up for your business is one of the best ways to help keep your personal life and business life separate and private. That’s not the only benefit; it also helps you make your business more automated, gives your business legitimacy, and makes it easier for potential customers to find and contact you.

There are many services available to entrepreneurs who want to set up a business phone system. We’ve reviewed the top companies and rated them based on price, features, and ease of use. Is this Business Right For You?

A good smoothie bar owner should be interested and up-to-date on the health foods movement. New research comes out every day about how nutrients interact with our bodies, and an owner will need to be able to keep up with the changes to stay in business. Ideally, an owner will have plenty of experience making their own smoothies at home. They should also be able to pick up on the nuances between their direct competitors, so they can determine how to make a superior product.

What happens during a typical day at a smoothie business?

A typical day for a smoothie bar owner may entail the following tasks:

  • Managing employees
  • Preparing a budget
  • Assisting with customer service
  • Quality checking the product
  • Researching new menu options
  • Maintaining the equipment
  • Updating the website
  • Ordering supplies
  • Negotiating with vendors

What are some skills and experiences that will help you build a successful smoothie business?

It usually helps to have some type of restaurant experience, whether it’s casual, fast-food, or formal. Owners will need to master the logistics of ordering, payroll, and advertising as much as they’ll need to understand which berries are in the highest demand. Much of owning any food establishment will be staying ahead of customer expectations and creating new demand with inventive menu options.

What is the growth potential for a smoothie business?

Growth potential typically depends on where you open, how you market, and what menu items you offer. But smoothie businesses do have major potential, even if there are certain locations that are saturated. Notoriously ‘green’ states like California and Colorado, for instance, have many (many) options for people to choose from. To succeed, owners may want to look at different markets throughout the United States to capitalize on new demographics who haven't been introduced to the taste sensations of gourmet smoothies.

What are some insider tips for jump starting a smoothie business?

You may want to consider starting off at a smaller location to get a sense of who is interested in your product. A single kiosk at a mall, for example, may give you the exposure you need without the exorbitant bills of a larger space.

The best way to get started is to do as much research as possible about your competitors, and then use those insights to apply what’s working to your business. You'll also want to improve upon anything that your competitors could be doing better. This can be anything from marketing strategies to flavors to customer service. Look for local or time-specific trends that you might be able to capitalize on. For example, tempting the new year's resolution crowd with a promise of trimming their waistlines.

How and when to build a team

Owners will generally need to hire at least a few team members immediately, even if they’re operating out of a smaller location. Most smoothie bars are open 7 days a week from mid-morning until evening, so it’s necessary to have several people trained and ready to handle the shifts.

What is a Juice Bar Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your juice or smoothie bar as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Juice Bar

If you’re looking to start a juice bar or grow your existing juice bar you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your juice bar in order to improve your chances of success. Your juice bar business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Source of Funding for Juice Bars & Smoothie Bars

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a juice bar are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable. But they will want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.

The second most common form of funding for a juice bar is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. They will either take equity in return for their funding, or, like a bank, they will give you a loan. VC funding is not appropriate for a juice bar. Venture capitalists might consider funding a chain, but never an individual location. This is because most venture capitalists are looking for millions of dollars in return when they make an investment, and an individual location could never achieve such results.

Finish Your Business Plan Today!

Your business plan should include 10 sections as follows:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of juice bar you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a juice bar that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of juice bars.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the juice bar industry. Discuss the type of juice bar you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of juice bar you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types:

  • Take-Out or Drive Through : this type of juice bar doesn’t have seating and is mostly visited by customers looking to grab a juice on their way to the gym or elsewhere.
  • Café : this type of juice bar typically has a more formal setting and will serve juice, smoothies, and some food items such as fruit bowls.

In addition to explaining the type of juice bar you operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include sales goals you’ve reached, new store openings, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the juice bar business.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the juice bar industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy particularly if your research identifies market trends. For example, if there was a trend towards juice cleanse regimens, it would be helpful to ensure your plan calls for plenty of juice regimen options.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your juice bar business plan:

  • How big is the juice bar business (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your juice bar. You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your juice bar business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: college students, sports enthusiasts, soccer moms, millennials, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of juice bar you operate. For example, sports enthusiasts might want different product options, and would respond to different marketing promotions than soccer moms.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most juice bars primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Juice Bar Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other juice bars.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes restaurants, supermarkets and customers making juice themselves at home. You need to mention such competition to show you understand that not everyone who drinks juice or smoothies frequents a juice bar each day.

With regards to direct competition, you want to detail the other juice bars with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be juice bars located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What products do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to stand outside your competitors’ locations and ask customers as they leave what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior juice/smoothie products?
  • Will you provide products that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to acquire your products?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a juice bar business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : in the product section you should reiterate the type of juice bar that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, will you offer items such as protein drinks or acai bowls? Will you offer fresh baked goods? Will you offer packaged food items for sale (e.g., protein bars, cookies)? Will you offer smoothies, fresh squeezed juices or both)? Etc.

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the menu items you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your juice bar. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your juice bar located next to a heavily populated office building, or gym, etc. Discuss how your location might provide a steady stream of customers. Also, if you operate or plan to operate kiosks, detail the locations where the kiosks will be placed.

Promotions : the final part of your juice bar marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Making your juice bar’s storefront extra appealing to attract passing customers
  • Distributing juice samples outside the juice bar
  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local bloggers and websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Partnerships with local organizations (e.g., gym members get a free shot of wheatgrass with their purchase)
  • Local radio advertising
  • Banner ads at local venues

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your juice bar such as training employees, serving customers, procuring supplies, keeping the store clean, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 1,000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect to hire your Xth employee or launch a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your juice bar’s ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in the juice bar business. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in juice bars and/or successfully running retail and small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 100 customers per day or 200? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : While balance sheets include much information, to simplify them to the key items you need to know about, balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. For instance, if you spend $100,000 on building out your juice bar, that will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100.000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a juice bar:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like blenders, refrigerators, etc.
  • Cost of fixtures like tables, chairs, a menu board, etc.
  • Cost of ingredients and maintaining an adequate amount of supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your store design blueprint or location lease.

How to Write a Smoothie Business Plan in 7 Steps:

1. describe the purpose of your smoothie business..

The first step to writing your business plan is to describe the purpose of your smoothie business. This includes describing why you are starting this type of business, and what problems it will solve for customers. This is a quick way to get your mind thinking about the customers’ problems. It also helps you identify what makes your business different from others in its industry.

It also helps to include a vision statement so that readers can understand what type of company you want to build.

Here is an example of a purpose mission statement for a smoothie business:

Our mission is to provide customers with nutritious and flavorful smoothies made with fresh, natural ingredients, while increasing awareness of the health benefits of a healthy diet and active lifestyle.

2. Products & Services Offered by Your Smoothie Business.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your smoothie business.

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your smoothie business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your smoothie business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?
  • How can you best reach them with your message or product?

Customer base

  • Who are your current customers?
  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your smoothie business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

Form an LLC in your state!

4. Write Your Operational Plan.

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a smoothie business?

  • High-speed blender
  • Cutting boards and knives
  • Ingredients or products to blend smoothies (i.e., fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, nut butters, protein powder)
  • Cups and lids for serving
  • Ice (if needed)
  • Business license/permit if required by local/state government
  • Food safety/handling certificates or permits if required by local/state government

5. Management & Organization of Your Smoothie Business.

The second part of your smoothie business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your smoothie business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Smoothie Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a smoothie business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a smoothie business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your smoothie business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your smoothie business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your smoothie business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.

Smoothie Business Plan: How to Start A Smoothie Business

author-logo

The health food segment is in an upswing. In the last decade alone, the smoothie industry has seen unprecedented growth. Globally, the juice bar business has become a $10 billion industry. People are considering fresh fruit smoothies and healthy beverages as an alternative to sodas and other carbonated drinks. There are many upsides to opening a smoothie business - high-profit margins, minimum preparation, low startup costs, and no prior experience is required. However, if you are thinking of opening up a smoothie or juice business , then you will still need to consider the following points before starting on your own.

What is a Smoothie Bar?

A smoothie bar offers freshly made beverages like fresh fruit drinks, blended smoothies, salads, and other healthy beverages. Most smoothie bars blend ingredients like milk, fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and ice to make smoothies. Fresh-fruit smoothies are rich in essential nutrients and boost immunity. A glass of a fruit smoothie is an easy way to get your daily dose of nutrients. Smoothie bars operate as a quick-service restaurant where freshly churned smoothies are ready to be served in a few minutes.

How to Start a Smoothie Business?

If you have made up your mind to start a juice business, you should have a well-researched business plan. There are more than 5000 smoothie bars across the United States, and to compete with them, you should have a well-thought-out strategy in place.

smoothie business

Here a few essential steps that you should follow before starting a smoothie business:

1.    Market Research: Businesses should do thorough market research before setting up shop. Setting up a juice business or smoothie shop can be a time-consuming affair. You should know about all other smoothie businesses in the area to be successful. Consider demographics, locality, average income, and price your products less than the competition. 2.    Location: Location is a crucial factor in determining whether a smoothie business is successful or not. You can start from a food truck converted to serve smoothies and shakes. It is a mobile version of your business that gives you flexibility. You can also consider setting up a brick-and-mortar smoothie business in a popular locality or a mall. Do consider future expansion and invest wisely. Do not splurge on decorating one shop that will take years to become profitable. 3.     Brand Name: Give your business a catchy yet easy-to-remember brand name. An easy name to remember will help in brand recognition. A simple brand name goes a long way in creating a solid customer base.  4.     Branding: After naming a brand, you should consider creating a brand logo. The design should be relevant to the name, target consumers, and be easily recognizable. Primary colors like green, yellow, and red are usually associated with food.  5.     Design Your Menu: A menu is part of the business identity of a smoothie shop or juice shop. A menu should include signature drinks, unique additions, and other options. A versatile menu will bring in repeat customers.

6.     Licenses & Certificates: A smoothie business plan should include all types of licenses, registrations, and certificates necessary to operate a smoothie business. You should insure your business to protect yourself from unpredictable incidents and liabilities. You should apply for a food safety permit that is compliant with all local laws.

7.     Right Equipment: To run a successful smoothie or juice business you will need a host of commercial kitchen equipment: ●    Juicers - To serve fresh fruit juices to your customers, you will need 1 or 2 commercial juicers ●    Blenders - You can buy more than one commercial blender to make smoothies and shakes ●    Commercial Refrigerators - commercial refrigerators are versatile pieces of equipment that can be used for storing food in controlled temperatures ●    Handwashing Stations - You will need to buy a hand washing station for your sanitation purposes for your business ●    Storage - You can store food and other items in storage cabinets ●    Kitchen Utensils - Knives, bowls, jugs, and jars are some essential kitchen utensils that you need for your smoothie business ●    Ice Machine - A commercial ice maker is an essential part of a juice-making business. Ice is a key ingredient for making smoothies; crushed ice, cube ice, and gourmet ice are the most popular types of ice used. Commercial Ice machines should be maintained and cleaned properly. As per the Food and Drug Administration, commercial ice machines need to be adequately cleaned, once every six months, to prevent contamination.

8.   Maintenance: Maintenance of all essential equipment is necessary. An ice machine needs to be cleaned thoroughly. While juicers and blenders need to be cleaned every day, refrigerators should be cleaned every few months.

How to Make a Smoothie?

Everyone likes a thick and rich smoothie. Factors like ingredients, syrup, and food products determine the taste of a smoothie. To make a thick smoothie, you need a balance of ice, food ingredients, and additional ingredients. Here are some tips to make a thick and rich smoothie:

Frozen Fruits: Frozen fruits and vegetables create dense smoothies and shakes. Some of the best fruits and vegetables for making smoothies are:

1.    Berries - Blueberries, strawberries, and other types of berries are best for creating delicious smoothies. 2.    Bananas - Bananas in smoothies add a creamy texture that makes it more thick and rich. 3.    Mango - Mangoes add richness to the flavor, and help in making thick smoothies. 4.    Kale - Kale is one of the most popular ingredients in vegetable smoothies. 5.    Zucchini - Zucchini adds a creamy texture and is a good alternative for health-conscious smoothie drinkers.

Reduce Liquids: Avoid using water, milk, and other liquids to make a smoothie thicker. Instead, yogurts can be used to create a rich & thick texture.

Choice of blender: A commercial blender can make rich and creamy smoothies. Blenders that need water or liquids to lighten the load need to be replaced.

Toppings: Adding different ingredients as toppings make smoothies more appealing and delicious. A freshly cut strawberry over a strawberry smoothie will look enticing to the customer. A few dry fruits like dates, almonds on a banana smoothie will make a boring smoothie more interesting & delicious.

Keep it Chilled: Smoothies can taste heavenly when served cold. There are different ways to keep a smoothie chilled. You can use chilled water, ice cubes, and cold almond milk to keep your smoothie chilled. Almond milk is an alternative to ice or water. It tastes great and helps thicken the smoothie. For watery smoothies, you can use molten ice or chilled water. For chilled thick smoothies, pre-crushed ice is the best ingredient.

Starting a smoothie bar can be commercially viable. Most successful smoothie bars turn profitable in less than a year. You should know all the basic ingredients, fruits and vegetables, and the process behind every beverage to make your business successful. Smoothie businesses provide a quick return on investment. You can also serve hot beverages and sandwiches along with juices, smoothies, and shakes to make it more enticing for customers.

business plan juice bar

How to draft a great business plan for your fruit juice bar establishment?

A good business plan for a fruit juice bar must be tailored to the unique aspects of this type of venture.

Initially, it's important to provide a comprehensive overview of the market. This should include up-to-date statistics and an exploration of emerging trends in the juice bar industry, as illustrated in our fruit juice bar business plan template .

Your business plan should articulate your vision clearly. Define your target audience (health-conscious consumers, gym-goers, office workers, etc.) and establish your juice bar's distinctive appeal (organic, locally-sourced produce, innovative flavor combinations, dietary accommodations such as vegan or sugar-free options, etc.).

Market analysis is a critical component. You need to thoroughly understand the local competitive landscape, market dynamics, and consumer preferences specific to juice bars.

Product offerings are central to your business plan. Describe your range of juices, smoothies, and any complementary products like health snacks or supplements. Explain how these offerings cater to the tastes and health requirements of your target market.

The operational plan is vital. It should outline the location of your juice bar, the layout of the service area, sourcing of fruits and other ingredients, and the juice preparation process.

For a fruit juice bar, it is crucial to highlight the freshness and quality of the produce, the nutritional value of the offerings, and adherence to health and safety standards.

Then, delve into your marketing and sales strategies. How do you plan to attract and keep customers coming back? Discuss promotional tactics, customer loyalty programs, and potential cross-selling opportunities (like offering wellness workshops or partnering with fitness centers).

Incorporating digital strategies, such as a website or active social media engagement, is increasingly important for reaching your audience.

The financial section is another cornerstone. It should cover the initial investment, projected sales, operating expenses, and the point at which the business will become profitable.

Given that a fruit juice bar can have variable margins depending on the seasonality and cost of produce, precise financial planning and understanding your figures are imperative. For assistance, refer to our financial forecast for a fruit juice bar .

Compared to other business plans, a fruit juice bar plan must pay particular attention to the sourcing and management of perishable inventory, health-focused marketing strategies, and potentially fluctuating demand based on seasonal changes.

A well-crafted business plan not only helps you to define your strategy and approach but also serves as a tool to attract investors or secure loans.

Investors and lenders are looking for thorough market research, realistic financial projections, and a clear operational strategy for managing a fruit juice bar.

By presenting a detailed and substantiated plan, you showcase your dedication and preparedness for the successful operation of your juice bar.

To achieve these goals while saving time, you can start with our fruit juice bar business plan template .

Market Opportunity

Market data and figures.

The juice bar market is a vibrant and rapidly expanding industry with significant potential for growth.

Recent estimates value the global juice market at approximately 154 billion dollars, with expectations for continued expansion as consumers seek out healthier beverage options. In the United States alone, the juice and smoothie bar industry generates around 2 billion dollars in revenue annually, indicating a strong and growing interest in health-focused drink establishments.

These statistics underscore the increasing role of juice bars in the dietary habits of health-conscious consumers and their substantial economic impact.

Current trends in the beverage industry are leaning towards natural, nutrient-rich, and wellness-promoting products.

Organic and cold-pressed juices are gaining traction, as they preserve more nutrients and enzymes, offering a higher quality product to health-aware individuals. There is also a surge in demand for superfood-infused juices, which include ingredients like acai, turmeric, and matcha, known for their health benefits.

Sustainability is another significant trend, with consumers preferring businesses that use locally sourced produce and eco-friendly packaging. This shift is leading juice bars to adopt more sustainable practices in their operations.

Technology is playing a role as well, with juice bars incorporating digital menus, online ordering, and delivery services to cater to the convenience sought by modern consumers.

Transparency in ingredient sourcing and the nutritional content of the beverages is becoming increasingly important to customers, who are more informed and interested in the specifics of what they consume.

These trends are shaping the juice bar industry, as businesses strive to align with the evolving preferences and values of 21st-century consumers.

A well detailed entry on putting up a fruit juice and shake business. I suggest that you add something if you wanted to start shakes and juices. Add a buy 1 take 1 hamburger too, maximize your resources. You can buy a 6pcs for 30 pesos CDO patties. Do the math. This buy 1 take 1 hamburger business is really a hit for fastfood bonanza!

Amazing! A new spot went 2x's in a row because it was that good. I got the shrimp one time it was fresh and seasoned well, the 2nd time I got the steak so delicious , cooked perfectly, and good amount with added side and cabbage - the yum yum sauce is good also! Better than regular hibachi restaurants. I liked the tea drinks BUT it can be too strong and aromatic for some (sometimes it's too much for me) and they are a bit pricey coming at $7 and change. TIP: buy the buns with your meal - like a boa bun The service is great and friendly workers. The place is clean, and decorated very thoughtfully I also love the hard plastic forks they have and the condiment jars they put the sauces in and the cups to hold the drinks (I just thought to put this in here since I feel they took their time in thinking of these things)

Let me just say that the young lady working behind the counter named MJ was FANTASTIC. We were on the fence about trying this place and she came outside to greet us and really was the reason we decided to give it a go. On to the food: First and most importantly, It's NOT hibachi. Don't call yourself a hibachi place and provide no fried rice option. The chicken was totally tasteless and it sits on top of a bed of hidden veggies to make the portion look larger in photos. The noodles have an overpowering taste of ginger. The steak is low quality and again portion size is tiny. $30+ for 2 of these combo meals is highway robbery. It's safe to say we won't be back here, ever. If this place doesn't start taking themselves more seriously by way of quality and value, they're not going to last... 1 star for the food. 1 star added because MJ was truly stellar. I'd hire her.

Hi Dust, thanks for your visit and review. I can feel you really care about our business. I know many customers like you want fried rice so bad. Us too. We are dedicated to offer fresh order to cook express Hibachi. In order to provide huge orders with high quality in short time, we cannot cook rice and protein at same time because rice grains might mix up. We are trying to figure out this problem by adding more equipments in our next new store in PSL. To put veggies is not to make portion look good. It is because we are providing nutrition-balanced healthy combo. About the portion, we offer 8oz net chicken / steak for each dish, we strictly measure the weight in the back kitchen. The portion for a combo is generous based on many reviewers’ opinions. For steak, we have the popular strip-loin and also a higher end of fillet mignon, multiple options for you. We have diversified sauce to come with on the side. We do take it seriously all the time and dedicate ourselves all the way to the quality and value. We definitely want a long lasting relationship with our beloved customers and we cherish our staff too. Thanks!

I stopped in before work to grab food I ordered the steak and rice combo. There were a few orders ahead of mine. I waited 30 Minutes while the chef prepared what looked like 5 orders then he just stopped stood around and looked at the board. There were quite a few orders to be made but he still Just stood. I had no been there 35 minutes. I requested a refund because it was taking too long. He then quickly made my order wrong. I didn't notice until I got to work there was no rice instead cabbage. I will go back but probably not until they work out so new opening kinks.

Hi Debbie, thanks for your visit and review. Sorry for the delay and wrong doing of your order. We are indeed working on the staff training and expanding our staff team. Thanks for your trust and support. We would soon provide a just-on-time high quality service to our community.

My husband & I stopped in for a late lunch the other day. The place is cute and there are a few outdoor tables as well. The gentleman helping us to place our order on the pad was very friendly and helpful. We finally placed our order and sat down to wait for our food. Our order took about 30 minutes to be prepared. It appeared like they were training a new cook, so not sure if that caused a delay. I did not really expect fast food, since they prepare once ordered. We ordered the Sirloin and the Chicken which is reduce price for February. One with rice & one with noodles. The steak was served fairly rare. There was no place to specify temperature, so I really didn't think about it. The flavor was good & the meat was tender. The chicken was good as well. We both really enjoyed the vegetables. The noodles & rice were ok. I also ordered the free Lemonade Tea with membership. Initially it tasted kind of perfumey, like a candle. But as time went by, it started to taste better to me. We are happy to have another dining option in the area. Just don't go in expecting fast food. Sign up for their free membership to get your free drink & earn points.

Tried it today for lunch. Had the shrimp with side of teppanyaki noodles. The place looks clean and the person in front was nice. The ship were nice & large, the veggies are mostly cabbage some little bits of diced peppers, onions and a lil shredded cabbage and lots of large pieces of garlic that needed to be cooked more. We had it with their signature sauce. Overall I thought it was oily, while fresh the sauce really didn't have any flavor to add either. My husb got egg drop soup and that lacked flavor too. Orders are taken at counter and then delivered to table, they cook where you can see, all was efficient.

No fried rice?? No combos allowed?? Not flexible enough for the price you pay. I wanted mushrooms and zucchini so they wanted to charge me $6.99 x 2. Did not like teriyaki sauce at all.

Sorry we don’t have fried rice yet since we want to provide high quality combo in a shorter time and the grains might mix up with proteins. We will have more space in our next store to provide fried rice. We have combo options, with protein and rice/noddle. While if you want two sides it’s hard for the chef to manage half-size of sides, again, standardizing makes efficiency and we are carefully balance the trade off between standardization and customization. It teriyaki is not your type, We have other sauce for you too. Thanks!

Photo of Kathy C.

Ambiance, very smokey inside their ventilation is bad. Service was very good, informative and helpful. As far as the food, disappointed. Ordered medium rare steak. It was well done with heavy salt and no other flavor. Mushrooms very good but over salted. Cabbage had a wierd taste, but not seasoned. The sauses were tasteless. Prices were very high for the lack of quality. Very disappointed in this restaurant. Food needs much less salt more flavor seasonings.

Mar 30, 2024

Hi Kathy, so sorry about the experience. We found the order, and tried to contact you but we don’t have the number. Could you contact us so that manager Geo will help you get a refund? We really appreciate your advice and help to improve our food. That shouldn’t be like that, we want to figure out the problem too. Thank you very much!

Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Nelson Peltz met for breakfast, where they criticized Joe Biden and brought along their sons Barron, X, and Diesel

  • Elon Musk had breakfast with Donald Trump and Nelson Peltz in March, The Wall Street Journal reported.
  • The men shared gripes about Joe Biden's performance as president and talked about voter fraud, .
  • It's one example of how much relations between Musk and Trump have warmed up.

Insider Today

You can trace the warming relationship between former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to some eggs, bacon, and fruit on a Sunday morning.

The two men met with Nelson Peltz in March at Montsorrel, Peltz's estate in Palm Beach, Florida, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The three talked about this fall's presidential election and took similarly critical stances on President Joe Biden's administration, according to the Journal.

The meeting was first reported by the New York Times in March. Trump sought major donations to his campaign from multiple GOP donors who were there, the Times reported.

Related stories

Also on the agenda was a "data-driven" project to combat voter fraud that Peltz and Musk have been discussing. They first mentioned the project to Trump at the breakfast meeting, the Journal reported. Voter fraud in the US is rare . However, it has become an interest of Trump since he falsely claimed that he won the 2020 presidential election.

The three billionaires also brought their sons with them to the breakfast. Diesel Peltz, Nelson's son, was at the event, as were Barron Trump, the former president's 18-year-old, and X, Musk's toddler, the Journal reported.

The meeting is one example of an apparent turnaround in the relationship between Musk and Trump. As recently as a few years ago, Musk called Trump a "bullshitter."

Now, Musk is under consideration for a role advising Trump if he is re-elected this November, the Journal reported.

"President Trump will be the only voice of what role an individual plays in his presidency," Brian Hughes, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, told the Journal in response to the report about the breakfast meeting and a potential role for Musk at the White House.

Representatives for the Trump campaign and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
